IT HAS BEEN A CRAZY RIDE SINCE TAKING OVER THE HELM OF VDF, WITH SO MUCH JOY IN EVERY STEP. We have the best of the industry standing beside us making magic happen this weekend. We come together to celebrate dance, celebrate each other, and celebrate everyone’s achievements over the year. We are so proud of the event and the team behind it, and we are so grateful to the instructors, creatives, sponsors and industry leaders who stood beside us and said, “let’s make this happen!” So this is it, VDF 2019, bigger, bolder and full of life. Soak in every moment, and remember that when we stand together as a community, we encourage, give courage and change the world.

VDF 2019 IS It is an honor to continue my role of Artistic Director for VDF following my good friend Paul Malek’s work in the same capacity and under the new direction of the beautiful Deborah and Daniel Searle from Dance Informa, following from Kate Meade.

Born and bred in this state, Victoria has always provided my family of entertainers opportunities to perform. My grandfather and mother lived above the famous Tivoli Theatre on Bourke St, where they were both resident performers – grandpa with his famous vaudeville acts and mum as a showgirl – so dance, music and performance is part of my bloodline. Although my own dance and choreographic career has sent me across the globe, the Australian dance and entertainment community is home.

Apart from being born into the family ancestry of entertainers, I also cannot think of my own dance career without acknowledging my mentors. Dulcie and Vicki Lee, Barbara Warren Smith, Jason Coleman who gave me my first job as a dancer, Kelly Akers who trained and hired me for my first musical and the legendary Ross Coleman who mentored me as a

choreographer. I feel it is crucial to remember these connections in my own life, and I am committed, in turn, to mentoring the next generation of dancers in arenas such as the VDF. It is important for those in due positions to foster an environment of support and collaboration, and give others the opportunities we were fortunate enough to have received in the past. To that end, the dedication of our Victorian dance community, full-time institutions and surrounding dance schools is SO inspiring to me. Their tireless work creates an invaluable resource, not only in developing the craft of dance and training dancers entering the industry, but also giving what many of us who dance know is a lifelong gift.

Which brings me to the “festival.” VDF is an opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate all that we are achieving and celebrate our common love of dance. What our community can emphasize at this festival is not external appearance but rather what is inside the dancer, what is expressed through their dance, who they are, what they have been through, their highs and lows.

When we get together to dance, something magic happens. We collectively enter into a flow of energy and diverse individuals become a single body of movement and breath. It takes us beyond our differences. And it reminds us of how beautifully unique we all are, and connects us all in this never ending stream of lessons and growth.

So that is my welcome letter to you.I want you to know, you are welcome here.

The Joffrey Ballet School is the only ballet school in New York City that offers a well-rounded dance curriculum that includes serious training in both classical ballet (technique, pointe, variations, adagio, men’s classes) and contemporary ballet (technique, improvisation, partnering), as well as modern, character, choreography, dance history, music, pilates and yoga. Special workshops are taught by guest faculty to augment the curriculum. All dance classes have live piano accompaniment, and live cello and percussion accompaniment is used in some contemporary and modern classes. ​ t VDF 2019, Joffrey Ballet School will offer scholarships to train in A New York to talented dancers who join in the Joffrey Ballet School classes.
