As my favourite dance weekend of the year approaches, I’ve been thinking about themes and ideas that we can integrate into our time together.

Community is always first port of call! Community is crucial for performers: for building support and friendship networks, fostering opportunities for growth and actively making changes in the culture to continually create spaces we are proud to participate in. I always try to emphasise how community helps us feel a part of something greater than ourselves.

flows and evolves like a river, if we can move with the tides knowing that nothing stays the same, we can have more enjoyment and appreciation of the ever-changing landscape.

And enjoyment and fun is one of our greatest measures of a good life! When we are happy doing what we love, encouraging and appreciating others just comes naturally.

As I get older I realise the importance of supporting new dancers and creatives and to step aside to make way for their new ideas. It’s exciting to watch how our community is evolving. So while I always encourage you to learn from your teachers and mentors – I also encourage you to have the courage to be yourself, express in your own unique way and contribute to the community with what truly moves you, even if its never been seen or done before!

As the Directors of VDF and Dance Informa Magazine, we are profoundly grateful for the opportunity to bring this event to the Australian dance community, and so very honoured to work alongside visionary Artistic Director Yvette Lee. At the same time, our community is made up of individual artists and, as every year, I encourage us all to actively support the uniqueness of each performer and their distinctive expressions. Our personal preference of style does not need to create a bias against the way we see other dancers or styles – how boring our community would be if we were all the same! Like different art pieces hanging on a gallery wall, we can appreciate and gather new information from all styles, instructors and students.

I know that many performers can feel the anxieties and pressures of trying to become ‘successful’ in the industry and stress is only compounded by comparison and competition: as I’ve said before, ‘community over competition’ is key. Over the years I have tried to expand my understanding of what success looks and feels like for myself and others in the industry, and I have learned that this looks different for everyone. Whether it’s work based, creation based, having a healthy work-life balance or cultivating nourishing relationships in the dance world, each of us can and should continually re-evaluate how we define this and our genuine feelings of fulfilment. One artists definition of success need not be the same as the one standing right next to them. This is what gives our community so much texture.

As hard as we work externally, our inner work of cultivating our mind-set and character and living according to our values is a crucial element to feeling fulfilled, no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in. Because the life of an artist

I am going to focus on mainstream dance schools who tangibly nurture their communities and help parents grow the next generations of amazing young adults.

What is Community for parents? What is Community for teachers?

Community is knowledge that the dance school (or activity) you choose for your child/ren is a safe environment for their extracurricular activities, wellbeing and growth. That safe dance policies are in place to ensure the safety of your children while in the care of others. That you can recommend your chosen school to others in your community because of the values they instil and the work ethic and care that they bring.

Teachers might start their school for a number of reasons – because there is a need in that area, because they love teaching and have a passion for the performing arts, to provide opportunities to others, to provide employment, to become a real part of their community by being actively involved, to put food on the table and pay the mortgage and more …. One thing is for sure they will help financially when and where they can – without fanfare and with discretion – because they love what they do and it’s one way of putting back into their communities.

Communities in Europe encourage children to immerse themselves in the arts and it starts in schools – they go to museums, art galleries, the ballet, the theatre, the opera, soirees and more. This is somewhat lacking in Australia. That gap has to be filled by parents and other influences in their life like extended family, teachers – both school, dance and other.

To ensure rounded education, to ensure your children are educated in all aspects of life, to have an appreciation of the arts – both performing and visual will help your children become amazing adults – appreciative of those who are great at sport, those who are great at music, those you are great at singing, dancing, drawing, painting and more. They will not bully their friends that choose diving as a sport or gymnastics or playing the violin or piano – they will appreciate their talent and support them and ‘barrack’ for them from the sidelines. How great is that!

Parents – look for ‘free’ entertainment – there are opportunities throughout the year at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, throughout Melbourne and more.

Can I suggest you subscribe to What’s On Melbourne or check out their website regularly? Type free in the search bar and voila! Expand your children’s horizon – I do hope they will realise one day what a gift this is and how blessed they are to already have the gift of dance!

Teachers are often not thanked or appreciated for the efforts they put into their schools. Yes, you are paying for a service parents, but what do these teachers of dance actually bring that you might not have thought about? I asked a class one day – ‘who’s enjoying school?’. No hands went up! ‘Who love’s English? Nothing! Who loves Maths?

Nothing. We sat down and didn’t dance that day. I asked them who would like to be a dance teacher one day? All their hands went up. I told them that they needed a good command of the English language to make speeches, to write newsletters etc. etc. to excel at school no matter what they wanted to be one day. Who loved reading in front of their class? Nobody – I explained the joys of reading, how to add expression, how not to lose their place. I taught them that they needed basic maths to prepare invoices, to work out discounts, to do percentages etc. We had school holidays and a couple of weeks after we were back I asked ‘how is school going?’. The hands shot up – Miss, Miss my teacher said my spelling is better. Miss, miss I love reading! And on and on it went. I went home and truly cried for the missed opportunities over the years and hopefully for an understanding that I did make a little bit of difference in the lives of my past students, the ones who had gone before. It was a cathartic moment in my life.

Teachers bring an eye for anatomical abnormalities (fortunately rare but occasionally there, noticed and advised to parents for a medical assessment/check). Teachers bring work ethic, confidence, musicality, deportment, enquiring minds, improved health – bone density, balance, energy, improved coordination, flexibility, happiness as exercise releases good endorphins and more – this list just goes on. How does this help your community? By being the very people that will work in their communities with part time jobs while at school, that other parents will be happy to leave their little ones with for babysitting, by bringing hard working individuals who have an appreciation of community to their homes, schools and beyond.

I cannot begin to explain the importance and meaning of community in its entirety but I do hope that the above gives you food for thought and an appreciation of those around you.
