Each week during school term time, CAT students take classes in contemporary, ballet, hip hop, creative, and health. They also work with a range of professional dance artists and choreographers from diverse backgrounds and experiences. We welcome applications from all young people, regardless of previous dance experience. We’re looking for individuals with talent, potential, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment: those who demonstrate physical awareness, creativity, and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently. To join the programme from September 2026, applicants must be aged 10 – 16 on 1 September 2026. Means-tested grants are available to cover training costs, transport, and dancewear, meaning your place could be fully funded. For more information on costs and funding, please see page 10. WE TRAIN The DanceEast CAT is a non-residential, pre-vocational dance programme for young people who are ready to take their training to the next level. Throughout their time on the CAT, students are supported and encouraged to prepare for future professional dance training.

Each week, students take part in around eight hours of dance across three days. This usually includes two evening classes in Ipswich, Norwich, or Cambridge, and a full day of training at the Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich at the weekend. Weekly sessions include classes in contemporary, ballet, hip hop, creative, and health. Our technique classes also feature live music.

Created in collaboration with the student and our CAT Tutors, the ITP helps monitor progress and provides targeted support. PROGRESSION AND CAREERS

PHIL WINDARD

The CAT prepares and equips students with the skills to continue on to further dance training, if they choose to. Guidance on progression routes and support is offered to students throughout their time on the CAT.

Phil joined the DanceEast CAT in 2010, studying on the programme for nine years. Phil trained at London Contemporary Dance School, graduating in 2022 with a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance. Then studied MA in Contemporary Dance Performance whilst undergoing a Professional Placement Apprentice with Stopgap Dance Company, facilitated through Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Phil is currently a Dance Artist involved in a number of projects performing and teaching dance.

Many of our graduates go on to continue their full-time education at dance conservatoires or universities to study for degrees, diplomas and professional qualifications in dance. Students are encouraged to discover their own pathway and progression. Previous graduates have gone on to prestigious vocational schools and university dance programmes, including:

SEBASTIAN HARRY

DANCEEAST CAT STUDENT 2019-2021

Sebastian joined the DanceEast CAT in 2019, training for two years. Following the DanceEast CAT, he studied at the BRIT School and was a member of National Youth Dance Company. He later trained at London Contemporary Dance School. He has performed with Little Simz, Chase and Status, Flawless, Matilda the Musical, ZooNation, and is currently a company member with Hip Hop Dance Theatre Company Far From the Norm, touring internationally.

MEGHAN STEVENS

DANCEEAST CAT STUDENT 2012-2017

After five years on the DanceEast CAT, Meghan trained at Northern School for Contemporary Dance, graduating with a first-class honour’s degree in 2020. Meghan joined VERVE21, under the artistic directorship of Matthew Robinson, touring works by Botis Seva, Caroline Fin, Barnaby Booth and Matthew Robinson. Meghan worked with Bakani Pick-Up Company to produce and perform works for the Qasimi Frieze Exhibition at the ICA London. She has performed with BalletBoyz, Tom Dale Company, and is currently working for Russell Maliphant Dance Company touring internationally.

JACK WILLIAM PARRY

DANCEEAST CAT STUDENT 2012-2015

During his training with the DanceEast CAT, Jack joined National Youth Dance Company, and then went on to full-time training at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. Since graduating, Jack has played Jack Frost/Cowboy in Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s The Snowman at Sadler’s Wells; dance and co-choreographer for TuckShop West End Born This Way (Garrick Theatre); Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake (National and International Tour/New York City Centre). Jack’s TV credits include: Troy in upcoming series Superhoe (BBC). COSTS AND FUNDING The DanceEast CAT is supported through the Department for Education’s Music and Dance grant scheme, which aims to reduce financial barriers to access the CAT. Means-tested grants are available to support the cost of the programme, meaning that anyone can apply to join the programme, regardless of their financial circumstances. The grants support the overall costs of the programme, including training, classes, dancewear, trips, guests, performances and a lot more.

The DanceEast Bursary Fund may also be available for additional funding to support families who are required to make contributions towards course fees.

AMOUNT OF GRANT (2026/27)

Parental contributions can be paid in three termly instalments, or over ten months by a monthly standing order.

The fee per student for the academic year 2025/26 was £4,193. This is set nationally by the Department for Education. Fees for 2026/27 will be confirmed in 2026.

Grant holders receive financial assistance with travel and dancewear costs. Financial support is means-tested on the same scale as the grant-funding, for example, families who are entitled to a full grant are also entitled to full reimbursement for dancewear and travel costs; families who are entitled to 50% grant are entitled to claim 50% of these costs.

FAQs HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO APPLY? We are looking for young people aged 10-16 years on 1 September 2026. DOES IT MATTER IF I HAVEN’T HAD A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN DANCE? We’re looking for young people who love to move! Whether you’ve never taken a dance class before, have a little experience, or have been dancing for years, you’re welcome to apply. We’re interested in potential, dedication, and enthusiasm – not just experience. HOW OFTEN WILL I ATTEND CLASSES? You’ll take part in classes one full day at the weekend and two evenings during the week. Plus, you’ll get to join exciting dance intensives during the spring and summer holidays!

WHERE DO WEEKLY CLASSES TAKE PLACE? Weekend classes take place at the Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich. Midweek classes take place in Ipswich, Cambridge and Norwich. WILL IT AFFECT MY SCHOOL WORK? The DanceEast CAT is designed to fit comfortably alongside school life. Every student has their own Individual Training Plan (ITP), which helps us support them in balancing their dance training with their school commitments. WHAT ABOUT OTHER DANCE CLASSES I ALREADY ATTEND? If you already take a ballet class that clashes with the DanceEast CAT ballet class on Thursday evenings, you can continue attending your external class instead. The CAT will cover the cost, and it will count as part of your weekly training schedule.

WHAT IS COVERED BY THE COST OF THE COURSE? The cost of the course, which may be covered by a means-tested grant, covers all classes, trips, performance opportunities and a lot more. Students also have the opportunity to take part in projects with the National Centres for Advanced Training in Dance. WHAT WILL I HAVE TO DO AT THE AUDITION? For the first stage of the audition, you’ll be in a group with others of a similar age and experience level. The session includes a mix of creative tasks and technique classes in contemporary, ballet, and hip hop. If you’re invited to the second stage, the audition will follow a similar format to stage one.

DOES THE PROGRAMME ONLY LAST FOR A YEAR? Students can stay on the DanceEast CAT until they leave full-time education, usually aged 18 years, or up to the age of 24 if d/Deaf or disabled. WHO TEACHES YOU? Our teachers are active professionals in the performing arts industry. They bring a wealth of real-world experience from their work as performers, rehearsal directors, choreographers, and educators with a variety of dance companies and organisations. This makes CAT training truly unique, we’re able to tailor our approach to support each individual and help students understand the pathways into dance in Higher Education. Students also have the chance to work with guest artists, offering valuable insight into the wider dance world. DO YOU SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITY AND ADDITIONAL NEEDS? There is a two-stage audition process for September 2026 entry. All eligible young people aged 10-16 years on 1 September 2026 will be invited to a stage one audition. The stage one auditions include creative and technique workshops and have been designed to be accessible and fun, regardless of your previous experience. You may then be invited to a stage two audition. We encourage everyone who is interested in joining the CAT to apply to audition. You do not need to have previous dance experience; we look for potential.

NATIONAL CENTRES FOR ADVANCED TRAINING IN DANCE DanceEast is one of the National Centres for Advanced Training in Dance (CATs), providing part-time pre-vocational dance training to young people. The nationwide programme aims to develop, create and inspire the next generation of dance artists, choreographers and leaders. The CATs provide highly specialised training to prepare young people for vocational and higher education programmes. The CATs are supported by the Department for Education’s Music and Dance Scheme. STAGE TWO AUDITIONS 2026 Stage Two Auditions are invite-only. The DanceEast CAT Team may invite you to attend a Stage Two Audition after your Stage One Audition. Please keep the following two dates free until you are contacted with your confirmed Stage Two audition date. You will only need to attend one of the following dates for a full day (9.00am – 5.00pm) n Saturday 6 June 2026 n Sunday 7 June 2026

PARENT/CARER DECLARATION Disclaimer DanceEast strongly recommends that a doctor is consulted before a child or young person begins any new exercise or dance activity. You should understand that when participating in any exercise or dance programme, there is the possibility of physical injury. If a child or young person engages in the Audition, you agree that they do so at their own risk, are voluntarily participating in these activities, assume all risk of injury to yourself, and agree to release and discharge DanceEast from any and all claims or causes of action, known or unknown, arising out of DanceEast’s negligence. As with all dance and exercise programmes, when taking part in DanceEast activity, you use your own judgement.
