CHRISTY WOLVERTONRYZMAN TWENTY ONE YEARS OF DEFINING EXCELLENCE DCNT: Tell us a little about yourself and what made you want to open your own dance studio.

CWR: I started teaching at a very young age and fell in love with educating, inspiring, and creating young artists. I loved performing, but teaching was extremely organic for me. After working at multiple studios, going on the road to teach and set works, I knew the direction I wanted to go and decided to take the leap and open a dance studio. It was an absolutely life changing decision that has been rewarding beyond words. It has not always been easy, but I wouldn’t change a thing!

DCNT: Dance Industry (DI) is in its 21st year! How has it changed since it first opened?

CWR: I opened Dance Industry in June of 2000 with two rooms in a strip center with little business experience and a whole lot of love for dance. I started off teaching every single class from the babies all the way up. I held auditions

that first year for my performing company and had a total of 8 kids show up. I took every single one and they quickly became family to me.

I have since built a studio consisting of seven rooms, a black box theater, and a full staff of professional teachers and administrators. Over a dozen different programs are set up by age and level and the performing company has more than 100 kids show up a year to audition.

The studio and business has grown through the years, and I now have the resources to provide the dancers with real opportunities. My “family” has grown in size and strength and is still the most important and rewarding part of what Dance Industry is all about.

DCNT: Why do you think Dance Industry has been able to produce so many successful dancers?

CWR: I have never lessened my expectations for myself nor my students. If my staff and I are

committed to them, then we expect the same in return. Training a dancer safely and correctly is extremely important, but nurturing the artist is equally important for longevity and success.

Providing a safe space for one to explore, fail, and push themselves is key.

Dance Industry has produced 9 Young Arts Winners and 4 have gone on to become Presidential Scholars in the Arts. They have been accepted to the best colleges and conservatories in the United States. Currently, there are DI dancers that are members of professional companies such as Ballet BC (Kaylin Sturtevant), Hubbard Street (Michael Garcia), Frankfurt Dance Company (Todd Baker), Complexions (Christian Burse), Saarlandisches Staatsballett (Montana Dalton), and Ballet of Difference (Mason Manning). Ida Saki continues to impress with her accolades that previously

included Cedar Lake Contemporary, the movie Cats, In the Heights, multiple TV series, along with music videos, and Broadway. JC Shuster has also locked down several Broadway shows, as well as a host of film and television credits. My alumni are extremely active in the studio and regularly return and give back to our next generation of dancers. It is what makes DI a place that is still as much family as it is a training facility. This is what I am most proud of.

DCNT: Talk about the different projects you support and their inspiration.

CWR: Giving back is of utmost importance to me and teaching my dancers to do so as well is equally important. We currently have a free program at the studio called Jacks Crew which is an inclusive class for individuals with all degrees of physical/developmental disabilities. This class uses creative movement to help build strength and physical health as well as promote selfexpression and confidence.

I also support Dancers Give Back, which is a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds for pediatric cancer, and I have my own nonprofit The Thriving Artist Project that supports young and established dance artists by offering space for education, creation and performance. We provide funding for exceptional young dancers to deeply pursue their artistic craft through workshops and residencies with today’s most influential dance makers and teachers, while offering artists from around the world a space to create and present new work. Our goal is to expand the experience of the artist and provide a platform for art to be seen locally in the north Texas area.

DCNT: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

CWR: Dance Industry has been my identity for as long as I can remember so passing it along to the next generation to continue and grow what I have started is a large goal by then. I still see myself wrapped in the arts and diving in deeper to giving back to the community, but living in Costa Rica on the beach surfing every day is the dream.

The original owner of Turner House at 401 North Rosemont was Oak Cliff developer J. P. Blake who purchased 3.72 acres in 1912 and constructed this outstanding example of Modified Prairie four-square architecture for his personal home at a cost of $55,000 through 1917. The house and grounds then went through a series of owners and modifications, at one point serving as a boarding house during World War II and then a church sanctuary.

When founding member and twelve-year president, Mrs. E. P. Turner, died in 1938, her two sons deeded their family home to the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts which was renamed the E. P. Turner Clubhouse. Plans for U.S. Highway 35E forced it to relocate and proceeds from the sale were used to purchase the current house on North Rosemont.

The Society’s home, the historic Turner House, provides the opportunity to celebrate the architecture and history of Texas, to promote further study of Texas historic architectural events and events, to provide space to showcase visual and performing artists, and

The Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts became the new owners and conservators of the main house and grounds in May 1957. The 401 North Rosemont site was included as a Clubhouse in the 1981 Winnetka Heights Historic District Overlay. Today it remains as one of only two surviving original structures in Dallas’ largest residential Historic District and is known as the Turner House.

The Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts was formed

Kent Barker’s creative pursuits started at the age of 6 when he began studying dance with Edith Royal in Orlando, Florida.

After highschool he accepted a scholarship at Joffrey Ballet in New York City. A knee injury forced him to return home where he began undergraduate studies at University of Central Florida.

A photographer friend introduced him to the darkroom and Kent knew this was what he wanted to do with his life. He enrolled in a photography class the very next day.

After graduating with a degree in fine art, Kent took the advice of a mentor and moved to Dallas, one of the best photography markets in the country. By the mid eighties, Kent was considered a top shooter in the U.S—working for national clients in both the advertising and editorial realms. His career has now spanned over 40 years and his photographs have appeared in magazines such as Vanity Fair, Esquire, Town & Country, Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, Inc, Fast Company, Outside and Texas Monthly.

The initial lockdown brought on by the COVID pandemic provided Kent with an unexpected gift: unfettered weeks of exploring his archives. As he sifted through decades of work, a handful of dance photos caught his eye and his new ambition.
