DANCE PLANET 25! Drag has a rich cultural history dating back to the Ancient Greeks, Shakespearean plays and Baroque operas where female parts were played by young men in women’s clothing because females were banned from performing publicly. Etymologists attribute “drag” to 19th-century theater slang, from the sensation of long skirts trailing on the floor and surmise it may have been based on the term “grand rag” which was historically used for a masquerade ball. Others propose it’s an acronym for “dressed resembling a girl”. While drag has long maintained a powerful presence in popular culture, it has in the last fifty years, developed a strong foothold in the dance world. Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo comes immediately to mind. Founded in 1974 by members of the Trockadero Gloxinia Ballet Company, the “Trocks” became both popular and critical successes worldwide and have, to date, toured over 34 countries and over 600 cities. Enter Reuben Asberry, Jr... better known by the stage name Kennedy Davenport, The Dancing Diva: a drag queen, television personality, and dancer who grew up in Dallas. He came to international attention on season seven (2015) of RuPaul’s Drag Race, where he placed fourth overall, and on season three (2017) of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, where he was runner-up.

off. His high energy dance numbers were in demand and he began to compete, perform, and tour all over the United States, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. He captured the titles of Miss Black Florida USofA 2006, Miss Queen of Illusion New York 2007, Miss Mardi Gras 2010, and Miss Female Impersonator of The Year 2010, to name a few. In November of 2011 Reuben decided it was time to return to his roots in Dallas. He continued to compete in and win pageants and also appeared on America’s Got Talent and season 3 of Skin Wars, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. In 2020 he appeared in the Netflix limited series AJ and the Queen. Of all his accomplishments, Reuben feels his greatest include capturing his first national title, Miss Gay Black USofA 2008, becoming a finalist on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 and All Star’s Season 3, and attaining a career-long dream of earning the title Miss Gay USofA 2019/20. He currently stays busy with online shows and cameos, and traveling (when Covid restrictions don’t interfere) and meeting and interacting with his beloved U.S. and world-wide fans. You can find Reuben on social media at facebook.com/ kennedyddoftx, facebook.com/kennedy.davenport.9, and instagram.com/kennedyddoftx.

where he was majoring in dance and vocal performance. His goal was to become famous— to get on the stage as soon as possible and show the world his talents. A friend helped him find costumes and Reuben began to compete in pageants. His stage name at the time was “Mia”, and at the suggestion of his drag mother, he changed it to Kennedy Davenport. As an entertainer who considered female impersonation a true art form and means of expression, Reuben spent years studying ballet, jazz, modern and African and made dance his signature element. Oh, and he could sing, too. Carla Wattley Bradley, his dance instructor at Booker T. at the time, remembers Reuben as a “high energy and vibrant dancer on stage— determined to shine in whatever genre he gravitated to.” After high school Reuben’s extensive dance training secured him a spot at North Carolina School of The Arts (NCARTS), where he continued to compete as Kennedy and won the title of Homecoming Queen and earned several awards for talent and choreography. Two semesters at NCARTS was enough and Reuben joined the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Florida, and his career as Kennedy took 12 • DANCE NORTH TEXAS • FEBRUARY – APRIL 2022
