AVANT CHAMBER BALLET CELEBRATES ITS FIRST DECADE
DCNT: Tell us a little about yourself, Katie. KC: I am from Texas and came back to Dallas in my late 20s for my family. I didn’t plan to start Avant Chamber Ballet, but no one was doing ballet in the way that I love, especially in Dallas. DCNT: What inspired you to start your own company? KC: I wanted to choreograph more with professional level dancers, and I had a wonderful group of friends who were dancers and musicians who wanted to be a part of something new and exciting. They inspired me, and as a female choreographer in ballet I had to make my own opportunities. DCNT: Why did you decide to use only live music? KC: I didn’t really have a choice! There is such a difference for the dancers and the audience to see dance with live music, not recordings. 4 • DANCE NORTH TEXAS • AUGUST – OCTOBER 2022
You would never go see opera with a recorded orchestra, and I think when dancers can have that same connection with musicians and conductors. It’s a full performance experience and a non-negotiable for me. DCNT: You’re celebrating your 10th season. Tell us what to expect. KC: It is our biggest season yet and we are starting it with our 10th Anniversary Celebration October 15th at Moody Performance Hall. We are commissioning a new work from Jock Soto and me plus re-staging some of my favorite Balanchine and Wheeldon from past seasons. Before the performance we will have a champagne toast and afterwards will be dinner and after party. We are so excited to celebrate with our audience! DCNT: Looking back, would you change anything?
KC: I think anyone starting a non-profit professional company has to be a bit naive but also have a lot of grit. Every production I learn a lot of lessons about how to do this better, but I don’t think I would change anything! It’s been a wonderful ride with some fantastic artists who inspire me every day. DCNT: Any future goals or plans? KC: Lots of plans! We are growing our school to younger ages and adding locations for our free outreach classes this year, and I see us expanding our studio space in the next couple years. My number one goal is always to support the company dancers more artistically and financially with raises and longer contracts which we are doing every year. It’s never easy to run a nonprofit but always rewarding.

The Dallas DancePRODUCTION Film Festival (DDFF) preview kicks off the fall season showcasing a wealth of talent, artistry, innovation, the diversity of live dance, and films from around the world. The show features past winners and previews some of the current season’s applicants. The 2023 final awards selection will take place at the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts Turner House in November. Special Guest Artists include B. Moore Dance and Nathan Hirschaut, winner of 2021’s DDFF Innovative and Creative Awards.

Dallas Dance Film Festival presents live dance, and short films directed by national + international filmmakers. Classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, and tap are featured, performed by the area’s pre-professional, and professional dance companies September 8 and 9 at Latino Cultural Center in the Dallas Arts District. October 21. LakeCities Ballet Theatre presents its annual Halloween classic, Le Ballet de Dracula. The lead, danced by
Shannon Beacham, will take flight at The Grand Theatre in Lewisville. This hauntingly beautiful ballet was written by Tom Rutherford with original choreography by Kelly Lannin and assisted by Shanon Tate. October 21 at 7:30PM | October 22 at 2PM and 7:30PM.
