What to expect when you visit Dance City

Dance City is a big blue and green building in Newcastle.

You will enter through our door that has the big Dance City sign above it.

Before and after the performance the cafe will also be busy with people eating and drinking.
You are also welcome to sit in the foyer or on the first floor sofas where there is also a water fountain.

There is access to the theatre from the ground floor or from the first floor.

You may need to walk up these stairs to access the first floor theatre entrance, or you can use the lifts.

One of our ushers will be at the door to take your ticket and help you inside the theatre.

The theatre is where the audience sit to watch shows.
There are lots of seats all facing a stage where the dancers perform.

The theatre will have lights on so you can find your seat. You may have to wait behind people to get to your seat and there will be people chatting.

People may need to walk close to you to get to their seat. You may have to walk in front of people and people may bump into you. You may have to sit next to people you do not know.

Once seated and the show begins the lights will get darker and people will stop talking.
You are free to get up and leave the theatre whenever you like. Our ushers will help you find your way out.

Our ushers will be walking around with torches helping people find their seats and enter/exit the theatre during the show.
The torches will be bright in the dark theatre. You may also have to stand up to let people move.

Dance City shows may include bright lights and loud music/sound. We will specify anything that audiences may need to know for accessibility reasons on our website.
You are welcome to bring headphones or any other aid you may need to feel comfortable.

When the show ends the dancers will stop dancing and may come together and bow on stage.
There will be a lot of people clapping and cheering and it may be quite loud. This may go on for a minute or two.

Someone from Dance City may go onto the stage and speak for a minute.
You will know when it is time to leave as the person speaking will indicate the end of the show and people will start standing up.

When the lights come on it will seem bright after sitting in the dark. You can take your time gathering your belongings and leaving the theatre.

It will be busy and people may be bumping into you. You may have to stand in a slow moving queue as you leave the theatre.
If you have access needs, we can facilitate this if you let us know prior to the show or by letting our Ticket Office team or Ushers know.

Ushers will be there to help you exit the theatre.
The Dance City building will have dim lights and look darker to when you entered the theatre if the show started before it got dark.

Sometimes there is a ‘Post Show Talk’ which means the cast will come out and audience sit/stand in the foyer and listen to them talk about their show and be interviewed by someone from Dance City.
You are welcome to stay for this but you don’t have to.

You are free to use the bathroom after the show, purchase another drink in the cafe and mingle or leave.

You will exit through the doors that you entered the building.
You do not have to let the Ticket Office team know or say anything to them, you are free to leave as you wish.
It may be darker outside than when you entered Dance City.
