SMALL RESIDENCE using precedents and parti diagrams to design a simple space

The foundation of this project was learning how to study existing architecture and analyze precedents to develop a new design. Our studio visited the nearby Erlanger House, a small, single-person residence that emphasized symmetry, simple materials, and subtle level changes to define space. After the visit, I developed a series of parti diagrams to apply to my own project. I began to explore how a simple parti could translate into real space to communicate a design idea. From the parti, my design evolved into a clear sequence of orthogonal spaces with an emphasis on transparency between the interior and exterior. Inspired by the Erlanger House’s connection to nature, my project provides expansive views to the exterior. Privacy is attained by surrounding trees rather than the typical convention of solid walls.

Studying the Erlanger House as a precedent showed me how to define smaller spaces within a large, open space. On-site sketches provided a closer look at level changes and materiality.

I developed a series of parti diagrams that had the capacity to represent space.

Without rigidly considering walls and levels, I focused on creating a simple and balanced composition using orthogonal shapes.

The next step was to consdier which parti diagram could most successfully translate into a simple residence. The diagram chosen allowed a small entryway, a large central space, a secondary space along the north wall, and lofted private spaces.

PARK PAVILION principles of design translate into architectural space

Beginning the design process by analyzing proportional systems in faรงades of wellknown buildings inspired me to explore how I could use proportion in my own designs.

This pavilion, designed as shelter for a park, plays with scale and balance to create an environment of curiosity and discovery. A three-tiered roof system was developed by repeating the initial form at different scales as it ascends from the earth. The roof form is a dynamic interaction with the sky. Inside the pavilion, three subtle level changes echo the three tiers of the roof. Park patrons are encouraged to enter the structure from its stepped outer perimeter, then directed in a circular motion to end their experience on a lookout deck. The pavilion is an exploration in how the principles of design and composition can be used to create interesting spaces.

BIBLIOTHĂˆQUE DE QUARTIER exploring the importance of community space in a dense urban district partner project hannah lim & dana taylor

In the quiet, primarily residential eleventh district of Paris, my partner and I designed a library that emphasizes community gathering over solitary reading. On a street where public space is scarce, the library creates a small public plaza by adding space to the sidewalk. The front plaza directs pedestrians into a secondary outdoor terrace -- a place where people can rest and linger, as contrasted to the movement and bustle of the sidewalk. Inside, levels of the library correspond to levels of noise control. The ground floor is open and social, and includes an area of children’s books and a multiuse community room. A mezzanine level offers breakout study rooms, and the second level stores the main collection. Reinforcing the library’s intent for connection, the second level features study tables that overlook the main level through a central atrium.

The free facade that wraps around the entire building echoes the flatness of neighboring buildings, but places an emphasis on modernity and simplicity.

A private courtyard is created due to conditions of the site. The building to the northwest of the site has windows on the south side, prohibiting the library from being built too close, and a flat wall on the north side, requiring the library to be built within contact of the building as a continuation of its street facade.

The first floor creates an open space for gathering and socializing. The quieter second floor retains a connection to the emphasis on community through an overlook to the first floor.

PANTIN BRIDGE inventing new solutions to solve an ordinary problem group project p. davidson, d. johnson, j. ligas, & d. taylor my role: concept development with team and strucutral analysis of buoy design

During a two-week charette, our group of four students designed a pedestrian bridge as part of a revitalization effort for the city of Pantin (located just outside of Paris).

Rather than building a conventional bridge raised above the canal, we designed a modular system of floating buoys that rest on the surface of the water. The interlocking system is able to be pushed apart by water traffic, then returns to its original position through tension in plastic ties that anchor each piece’s base to the bottom of the canal. By solving the problem in a new way, we created a fresh, interactive experience for both pedestrians crossing the bridge and boats traveling through the canal.

The system is not rigidly defined by form, rather, it encourages flexibility and movement in a collection stable and functional individual pieces.

The concept was designed as a team.

When dividing the work of detailing the concept, my job was to analyze the structure of the materials to determine the required sizes of the top steel plate and plastic support rod.

ATELIER DE GASTRONOMIE urban farming as a living laboratory for culinary students

This residential culinary school in Paris explores unconventional uses for urban space.

The project is defined by three elements: vegetable plots, greenhouse, and culinary studios. A large portion of the site is devoted to vegetable growing plots. The framework of these plots extends through a multi-story greenhouse to allow year-round food production. The exterior vegetable plots and interior greenhouse space allow culinary students to learn where their food is coming from. Additionally, growing food within the city introduces the idea that architecture can give to its environment rather than only consume resources. The greenhouse also becomes circulation between cooking studios, which are inserted into the building as individual modules. A student residential building facing the street continues the modular language expressed by the studios.
