Five things Dana Point should know this week Trump Administration Unveils Offshore Drilling Proposal THE LATEST: On Jan. 4, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke released the Trump Administration’s long-awaited offshore drilling proposal. The 2019-2024 National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Draft Proposed Program released by the Bureau of Energy Management (BOEM) outlines 47 individual lease tracts along the outer-continental shelf spanning the entire U.S. coastline.

This proposal, which lifts a ban on offshore drilling in the United States placed

by President Barack Obama near the end of his term as well as opens up leasing off the California coast for the first time since 1969, faces an uphill battle before it would result in actual leasing.

Pacific coast state governors announced their united opposition to re-opening the Pacific coast to offshore drilling in a jointstatement.

“This is something that all Californians are against.” said Jennifer Savage, California Policy Manager for the Surfrider Foundation. “This is something that crosses party lines.”

Savage explained that although the 380-page program outlines two areas to be opened for lease off the Southern California region in 2020, those areas have yet to be specifically defined. “There are already over a dozen marine protected areas in Orange County,” Savage said, “with all the ways that the ocean is valuable in Orange County, the potential impacts would be profound.”

WHAT’S NEXT: Opening up new oil exploration leases requires the completion of an extensive environmental review, which could take a year or longer. States such as California also have some power to thwart Zinke’s program.

Zinke said any new oil leases must first undergo environmental review and would not be exempt from the National Environmental Policy Act. He also noted it was a draft proposal that could change after public input.

contractors for all unpaid wages, benefits or anything else agreed upon for subcontractors. The bill authorizes general contractors to request pay records from subcontractors in order to ensure the payments are made.

Laws that tackle sexual harassment in the workplace as well as mandatory training about avoiding such incidents are also now in effect. Employers with 50 or more employees must have a discussion of harassment under topics of harassment, gender identity and sexual orientation.

New Business Laws Now in Effect in California THE LATEST: As of Jan. 1, several new hot-button laws were approved by the California Legislature and are now in effect.

The laws include increases in minimum wage to $10.50 an hour for employers with 25 employees or less and $11 an hour for those with more than 25. Another bill will increase leave time for new parents to 12 weeks after the employee has worked for the business for more than one year. This applies to businesses with 20 or more employees.

Employers now cannot ask their employees about their criminal history on job applications. If a job offer is made, the employer can then check criminal records but not use them as a determinant of hiring someone. Employers also cannot use salary history to determine wages for an employee.

A highly contested bill passed last year regarding worksite immigration laws. AB 450 protects employees from immigration enforcement while working and employers cannot provide enforcement without a warrant. It also limits employers from providing agents with records without a subpoena or warrant.

CDPH: Influenza Cases Rising Statewide THE LATEST: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced on Jan. 9 that flu activity in California has been “widespread and at levels usually seen at the peak of the influenza season.

Health officials encourage Californians to get vaccinated.”

In a press release, CDPH stated it takes about two weeks after receiving a flu shot for the body to respond in full.

The strain of influenza that’s been dominating California is H3N2, which can be very severe for people who are vulnerable to the virus. CDPH said 27 people younger than 65 have died from the virus in California since October.

“Vaccine effectiveness does vary for the different strains and year by year,” the release stated.

WHAT’S NEXT: The release stated data will be available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in February about vaccine effectiveness.

People who are most vulnerable to the virus are pregnant women, children younger than five and especially children younger than two, people 65 and older and people who have certain medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease. —Staff

THE LATEST: Following the announcement

by Rep. Darrell Issa, CA-49, that he will not seek re-election for his congressional seat, Diane Harkey of Dana Point announced she will run for it on the Republican ticket.

Harkey, who is currently the chair of the California State Board of Equalization and was a state Assembly member from 2008 to 2014, said her experience in finance and banking would be a much-needed attribute to Congress.

“My whole policy has been basically helping Californians stay in business and do more business and collect taxes to help pay for the things we all want,” Harkey said in a phone interview with the San Clemente Times on Jan. 10. “I’m very strong on anything that’s financial or budgetary. I have 30 years’ experience in banking and corporate finance.”

Harkey was the mayor of Dana Point in 2007, and she said her experiences with networking throughout the state and governing tax policies across four counties would make her an exceptional representative at the federal level.

WHAT’S NEXT: When asked about the challenges on the campaign trail she will likely face—Issa, a Republican, had his closest election in 2016 after easily defeating Democratic candidates since 2001— Harkey said she thinks the Republican contingency is still strong enough to elect her to The Hill.

Five other candidates have already announced their intent to run for the coveted congressional seat.

he Dana Hills High School (DHHS) Sailing Club, currently made up of only seven DHHS students, has a mission statement that is shared with many sailors around the world, regardless of age or coastal community. Their purpose is to teach youth—or in this case Dana Hills High School students—to respect and love the ocean and sport of sailing as well as learn how to sail and race while being safe on the water.

Carsen Lenthall, 16, president of DHHS Sailing Club, says the largest difference in sailing versus other recognized high school sports lies in the preparation.

“The biggest difference between the two, for me, is the preparation for regattas versus games,” said Lenthall, who also plays football for DHHS. “In football and almost every other school sport, you prepare for the team you are playing against, whereas in sailing you don’t prepare as much for the other teams as you do for the weather conditions and the place you are sailing. For example, sailing in San Diego is much different than sailing here in Dana Point because of how the landscape can affect the wind and cause wind shifts throughout the course. In sailing, the environmental conditions and the weather can be a competitor of its own.”

One of the DHHS Sailing Club’s founding members, Lenthall emphasized the variety of skill sets improved through sailing.

“There’s a thrill, and some risk, when sailing out on the ocean in the natural elements that you don’t get when interacting with technology. Some of the most exciting moments are when the winds are high and the swells are big. This is when you’re going fast and on the verge of capsizing, and sometimes when you do capsize it can be a challenge to flip the boat back over.

In the end, the partial fear and struggle is what makes it fun.”

The Dana Point Harbor Youth Foundation (DPHYF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, raises funds that go toward the purchase of boats and equipment that Lenthall and his club may charter. DPHYF also offers scholarships for those that need financial assistance.

Dana Point Yacht Club (DPYC), the official yacht club sponsor of the DHHS Sailing Club, provides expert in-house coaching for a variety of local high school programs. This, in addition to guest-coaching from former graduates such as David Cornella, a DHHS graduate in 2013, has empowered members of the small DHHS Sailing Club to quickly find themselves upon the finalist podium.

For instance, Lenthall was named the 2017 DPYC Junior Yachtsman of the Year, alongside his younger brother Riley who placed second in the Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta this past August.

As he humbly recognized his successes, Lenthall voiced that he sees potential for the DHHS Sailing Club to benefit by being officially recognized as a sport by the school.

“I’m very interested in making sailing a sport at our school,” Lenthall said. “It would bring more attention to our team by the students, teachers and parents, and elevate it to the level of other school sports.

I hope we can continue to recruit sailors to our team, build on our skills and compete well against other established teams in the area to make our school proud.”

As he looks forward to potentially joining the more than 70 recognized high school sailing teams between San Diego and the San Francisco Bay area in the future, Lenthall maintains a sense of pride with what he has contributed to his home community.

“I hope (DHHS Sailing Club) succeeds so that after I leave, other kids will have an opportunity to experience everything that I have with sailing.” DP Page 4

Maritime Matters Presents Todd Mansur as Series Speaker on Jan. 18 This month’s Maritime Matters seminar to be held on Thursday, Jan. 18 from 7-9 p.m. at the Dana Point Yacht Club, features Captain Todd Mansur of Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching. Todd is the director of Marine Mammal Education Programs and is on the board of directors for the Gray Whale Foundation. Mansur has had a career on the ocean for the past 32 years and is Dana Wharf’s lead naturalist and conducts all of the pre-excursion inclassroom education for Orange County’s schools. As a certified marine naturalist, Todd will present information on whales, marine mammals and general ecology. The presentation will start promptly at 7:00 p.m.

Surfrider Foundation Lantern District Beach Clean-Up on Jan. 13 Surfrider Foundation South Orange County chapter is holding a Lantern District beach clean-up on Saturday, Jan. 13 from 10 a.m.-noon. “We will be cleaning up throughout Dana Point’s Lantern District, specifically targeting cigarette butts in support of the Dana Point city-wide smoking ban. Traffic Signal Painting to Begin Jan. 8 City Public Works will be painting traffic signal equipment at a number of intersections citywide starting Jan. 8. Typically, this is done every four years to protect signal heads and other signal equipment from corrosion. It also provides for more contrast for the driver, creating a safer driving experience. hirteen years ago this March, a dream of mine was realized when we launched the San Clemente Times. A year later in 2007, we acquired The Capistrano Dispatch and then proceeded to start the Dana Point Times in 2008. The idea then was the same as it is now—to create community newspapers and websites unlike any you’d seen before.

A “maga-paper” that was designed like a magazine, read like a newspaper and gave you “Local News You Can Use” like no one else could or would. The editorial would be 90 percent forward-looking, 10 percent “last week’s news,” deliberately striving to provide residents and visitors with an insightful guide to their lives in these amazing communities. Our editorial strategy was a call to action: The more you know, the more involved in our community you’ll become. The more involved the

I am writing in response to Mr. Viczorek's "Looking Forward" interview published in the Jan. 5 edition of the Dana Point Times. To quote Mr. Viczorek, "I have met many people who do not know who (their elected officials) are. I want to emphasize here that I think this is a good thing." Mr. Viczorek, ignorance is never to be commended. The willful ignorance of the United States' electorate, combined with the exploitation of that ignorance by our elected representatives are why the United States finds itself in the throes of self-inflicted degradation. I hope your belief in this "good thing" doesn't portend a similar ignominy for Dana Point during your tenure as mayor.

As horrible as this sounds, somehow, there's a level of comfort in me because right before the rain, I picked up 773 cigarette butts between Ruby Lantern and Golden Lantern on a stretch of only 0.3 miles. This is a normal count during one of my cleanups. But now, I’ve realized that I may have saved many fish. Do you want to save the fish yourself? Try cleaning up sometime. It's actually a fun workout.

Thank you to the City for being proactive on trash issues. Clean streets and clean beaches don't come by default.

Folks, we're privileged to enjoy both the nobility and the beauty by the ocean.

It is vital to our quality of life and economy that we continue to stand up, including our elected officials, to protect San Onofre State Beach and the City of San Clemente from any new toll road proposals through our park or our city. The completion of the Interstate 5 widening through San Clemente, and the occasional use of the La Pata bypass option as needed, are immediate traffic solutions for South Orange County.

Any toll road proposals through the park or city will create irreversible devastation and will only cause new impediments to the flow of traffic through this region.

Let’s all unite and dedicate our efforts to protect San Onofre State Beach.

ne week into 2018 and we finally get a wide release of one of the most anticipated period pieces of this awards season: Steven Spielberg’s The Post. Directed by one of our finest living filmmakers and starring two screen legends, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, the film comes at a time when we’re being reminded that the fight for freedom of the press has been a long fight in our country’s history.

Back in 1971, local D.C. newspaper The Washington Post was in a rivalry with The New York Times to get the best scoops about the Nixon administration and the Vietnam War. The Post’s publisher Katharine Graham (Streep) is in her own battle to be taken seriously by her board and her hard-as-nails editor, Ben Bradlee (Hanks),

has to prove he’s the right man to lead the paper. But there finally might be a turning point when someone begins leaking secrets on the war to both papers.

Bruce Greenwood, Sarah Paulson, Alison Brie and Bob Odenkirk make up some of the supporting cast of familiar faces.

The Post is a perfect example of a film that fits the definition of “solid.” Everything from Spielberg’s direction to the performances to John Williams’ trademark score to the aesthetics is fine and what you’d expect from everyone. But it’s nothing incredibly groundbreaking. The themes are, of course, being compared to current events, and the release date does make the similarity a bit on the nose. But still, Spielberg’s latest film would work well for fans as a spiritual sequel to his 2015 hit, Bridge of Spies. DP www.danapointtimes.com

Five Things I’ve Learned in Three Years of Retirement

W

hen I was pondering retirement from Tutor and Spunky’s, my Dana Point deli, the main thing I looked forward to was having “free time.”

With it, I could do nothing—if I wanted— which sounded great, after 25 years of serving sandwiches.

Three years ago in January, I sold the deli to Jim Mouzakis, a really good man, who I knew would treat the employees well. I had worked until age 75; I’m glad I did. Working until then helped build a small financial nest egg and kept my body moving and my mind active. And then, finally, there was freedom from slicing salami.

However, I realized quickly that I did not want a lot of free time. It wasn’t good for me. I’m not built to sit around. I realized I must have projects to work on. Every ON LIFE AND LOVE AFTER 50 morning I make a to-do

By Tom Blake list for the day. If I haven’t crossed each item off by day’s end, so be it. But, the list keeps me focused.

Soon, that free time became busy time.

And from three years of busy time came five lessons learned in retirement.

1. The most important retirement lesson learned is the need to have social interaction with people. To be too isolated is not

good for one’s health.

A good way to interact with people is by joining groups. Meetup.com lists thousands of groups and activities and should provide plenty of ideas for people who are not sure of what to do to meet others.

Also, monthly Chamber of Commerce mixers and service clubs are great places to interact with people.

2. The second retirement lesson I’ve learned is the importance of keeping my body moving. It’s a daily priority for me.

In South Orange County, we’re fortunate to have parks and the ocean nearby. The ocean can be a great aid and inspiration to keep moving. There’s surfing, swimming, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, and walking in the harbor or on the beaches.

Salt Creek Beach is one of the most beautiful in the world. I can walk there in 30 minutes from our front door, and do often.

In retirement, keeping the body moving daily is a “must-do” in filling my “free time.”

3. The third retirement lesson I’ve learned is the need to have a purpose in life. Something with meaning, it doesn’t have to be a huge project. Volunteering and helping others is a great way to fulfill this human need. Some people use the words “giving back.” There are lots of people around who are way less fortunate than I. They can use a little help. How I help them doesn’t matter-giving of my time, or what little money I can afford, makes me feel good.

4. The fourth retirement lesson I’ve learned is the importance of keeping one’s mind and brain stimulated. For some, it’s the love of reading that fulfills this need. For me, it’s my writing. I’ve been a newspaper columnist for 23 years. I love it. Every week I must generate a column and/or a newsletter article. I am grateful for the opportunity.

5. The fifth retirement lesson I’ve learned is to be willing to step out of one’s comfort zone. When Greta and I were in Lima, Peru, in October, it would have been easy to take a tour of the city arranged by the ship. But, instead, we decided to do it

If you’re single, and you’ve made a list of the qualities you seek in a mate, don’t be shackled by the list. Let’s say one of the qualities is to meet a widower of the same faith. But you meet a divorced man instead. And holy horrors, he’s not of the same faith, or even more horrifying, not of the same nationality. But you like him because he’s a gentleman.

Step out of your comfort zone and take a chance on him. Let yourself be enlightened. You’d be surprised at the number of seniors unwilling to do that. Don’t be an old fuddy-duddy.

Those are the five biggest takeaways I’ve learned in three years of retirement.

In 2018, I’ll probably learn a few more retirement lessons. But, if I can master these five, I will be ahead of the game.

t’s been a roundabout way for Zaid Malkosh to become the Dana Hills girls soccer coach, but he’s here and ready to bring some change.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to end up in situations where I need to be,” Malkosh said. “I’ve learned a lot, and I’m trying to push things forward.”

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Malkosh moved with his family as a one-year-old to the country of Jordan in 1987.

Growing up in the Middle East nation and playing soccer through high school and at the Princess Sumaya University for Technology, he had a different experience in his formative playing days and is trying to use what he didn’t learn in his coaching of the Dolphins.

“Growing up I never had the quality of coaching in what I’m trying to provide for the girls,” Malkosh said. “I’m trying to preach positivity, getting out of their own head and teach problem solving.”

From Alabama to Jordan to Illinois in 2009, Malkosh made his way to California in 2012 to pursue a career in soccer coaching. It wasn’t long before he found himself at Dana Hills coaching the freshmen and junior varsity each of the last two years.

After Carrie Taylor stepped away in the offseason, Malkosh went through the hiring process and won the job to complete his quick ascent.

“Fortunately, it’s been great,” Malkosh said. “I’ve never been a kid from Dana Hills High School, but I feel like a part of this group, and I want to make them into stronger women.”

Malkosh has tried to enact his positive philosophy and mold this group of young Dolphins to bounce back after a couple of rough seasons.

“What’s good in life and in this game is succeeding,” Malkosh said. “We want to execute certain things. There are a lot of things that are moving forward. I can’t say everything is where I want it to be.

We’re young and need work.”

A sign that the work is paying off was the Dolphins league-opening draw against San Clemente on Jan. 9. The game also showed where certain things need to change for Dana Hills.

“San Clemente had played 16 games,” Malkosh said. “We had only 7 games on record, you can see how that affects a program.”

Between the schedule, fundraising and new uniforms, Malkosh has taken on the new challenges of being the head of a program. An additional challenge is fulfilling the needs of your current team while trying to push ahead.

“You don’t want to say to the current girls that you’re working for the future, but we’re working for the future,” Malkosh said. “Next year is going to be very important to grab the quality on the field. I’m very excited for what’s to come.”

Ahead are the goals Malkosh has set for the program, his own and what’s expected. Despite not being a kid from Dana Hills, he’s knows what it’s about and what to aspire to.

“We enjoy our time playing the game,” Malkosh said. “I know Dana plays Division 1, and we want to play competitive.

We want to live up to that name.” DP

The Dana Hills girls held on for the upset tie against San Clemente, 1-1, to open the South Coast League on Jan. 9., and the Dolphin boys fought back to tie Trabuco Hills, 1-1, in their Sea View League opener on Jan. 10.

The Dana Hills girls (2-5-2, 0-0-1) took advantage of a soaked field with a slow game and struck first in the 49th minute.

San Clemente raced back within the next minute to tie the score but wouldn’t come close after that.

The Dolphins boys (9-5-2, 0-0-1) were down a goal at halftime, but Bobby Reynolds brought the game even in the second half. Hayden Fisher made two saves.

Results were not available at press time for the girls game against defending league champion Aliso Niguel on Jan. 11.

The Dolphins’ next match is Tuesday, Jan. 16 against Laguna Hills.

The boys push forward against Tesoro on Friday, Jan. 12, and host Laguna Hills on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Girls Basketball Pulls Away from Mission Viejo Dana Hills opened its Sea View League campaign with a 53-35 win over Mission Viejo on Jan. 9.

Mission Viejo cut the lead to two points in the second quarter before the Dolphins (9-8, 1-0) went on an 11-0 run into halftime. The run extended to 16-0 to open the second half, and Dana Hills would lead by as much as 21 points in the fourth quarter.

The win breaks a skid where Dana Hills had lost three in a row and five of its last six games.

The Dolphins suit up next on the road against defending league champion Trabuco Hills on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Dana Hills is ranked No. 11 in the latest CIF-SS Division 2A poll, and Trabuco Hills is No. 14 in Division 3AA. DP

Halibut Derby Underway at Dana Wharf

T

he halibut derby is well underway, and there’s a new big leader on the board.

In his weekly report, Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching captain Brian Woolley revealed a 36-pound halibut caught last week by David Sluder aboard the Clemente.

Woolley said the halibut fishing has been really good recently with the derby leaderboard filled up and larger fish already bumping names off. The halibut fishing rig of choice has been reverse dropper loops.

On Jan. 5, the Clemente put up its “best derby score ever” with a legal 14 fish of sizes from five to 15 pounds.

Woolley also said the three-quarter and half-day trips have been “as good as you can want it to be” in catching sculpin with anglers consistently taking five fish home.

The half-day trips have also been good for sand bass.

At 21-feet long and over 33-inches wide, the S.S. Quadnundrum is the second generation of first-of-their-kind, multiperson stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) the Boehne’s have designed.

“My wife and I do everything tandem, so first I made a tandem SUP for us. We called it the Tandemonium,” Steve said.

“When we found out that we could take one of her friends out on it too, we tried with her husband as well, but it was too short. That’s when I made the 21-footer.

We found it to be really fast in races, and just really fun for a group workout. To my knowledge, it’s the only one of its kind,” Steve said.

To enjoy this pioneer of a product, the Dana Point Times was invited to the Harbor for a four-person ride to try out the board.

As we launched from the shallows at Baby Beach, the increase in thrust and

top-speed, from four humans stroking compared to one, was immediately evident. Barrie, standing closest to the nose, counted strokes before instructing us to switch our stroke-side with a “one-twoswitch-and-stroke” cadence. Steve steered from the far back position using a footpedal-controlled mobile rudder.

As a moderately experienced paddler, the S.S. Quadnundrum initially felt alien and slightly uncomfortable, but as our four-some stepped into a more cohesive rhythm, the long hull began to glide along

the glassy conditions. The elongated railline held the water’s smooth surface, with the extra weight enabling the board to smoothly power through wakes.

This multi-person coordination is a defining feature of what the Boehne’s see as a new take on classic tandem-surfing.

“I could make more, but I haven’t had the requests. At 21-feet long it’s kind of intimidating to most people,” Steve said, explaining the origins of the fiberglass board, the foam “blank” of which had to be ordered from Texas. “I’ve made around a dozen 19-foot tandems that can take up to three people that are being used across California, the East Coast and in Europe.”

Stand-up paddleboarding is often praised for its mass appeal due to enabling a large demographic to enjoy a variety of natural elements and physical exercise.

The degree of difficulty is left entirely up to the user’s discretion. With inventions such as the S.S Quadnundrum and other pun-infused, multi-person stand-up paddleboards, Steve and Barrie Boehne are putting a fresh spin on a time-honored tradition.

Grow Your Own Surfboard Agave Surf brings a more sustainable, environmentally friendly concept to the surfboard business

asting away in Margaritaville is one thing, but there’s more to the agave plant than tequila and looking for that lost shaker of salt.

For a number of years now, a handful of surfboard shapers have been building boards using the flower stalk of the agave plant instead of the traditional foam blanks.

San Diego’s Gary Linden was one of the first to experiment with the material.

“The byproducts of the tequila-making process provide a huge source of what I believe can be used to make a plethora of products, providing jobs for people that really want and need to work,” explained Linden, who’s spent time in Mexico working with the Jose Cuervo distillery. “I feel if we all focus our creative minds we can come up with something pretty special.”

A couple of winters ago, Linden shaped a big-wave gun for pro surfer Alex Gray, which was put to the test during a sizable run of swell at Isla Todos Santos in northern Baja.

“I rode it on the biggest day at Todos last winter and the board worked insane,” Gray said. “It’s a heavier surfboard. The agave is very porous and soaks up a lot of Dana Point Times January 12-18, 2018

resin, so you get a lot of momentum paddling. It felt alive compared to a regular surfboard.”

Given South Orange County’s history of surfboard design and construction, it only seems logical that perhaps the future of green, renewable board materials is landing in local waters. Like so many brilliant ideas, this one starts at a coffee shop. In the spring of 2016, local surfer and aspiring designer Nate Headrick was working at Crank & Grind in Dana Point when Ian Bryan, an artist and photographer, was invited to show some of his work at the cafe/bike shop. The founder of Jonathan Seagull Butterfly Art and Laguna Skateboards, he was invited to showcase his butterfly works and bamboo-veneered skateboards. His vision for Laguna Skateboards was to develop more sustainable boards using a pressed bamboo veneer.

Conveniently, Headrick had been experimenting with how to efficiently produce surfboards using agave. Both seeking new ways to make more environmentally friendly and sustainable equipment for surfers and skaters, they struck up a friendship over a few cups of coffee.

“The coffee shop provided me with a forum of sorts. I’d get two or three minutes with each customer and few opportunities were missed to talk about the potential of agave,” says Headrick. “I had my collection of flyers on the counter and I got a lot of my first stalks that way. It was a fun way to rub elbows with all of the members of the community and meet like-minded people. I met Ian Bryan, a Laguna Beach artist, and we combined forces to take Agave Surf to the next level.”

Like that, Agave Surf was born. The initial agave skates were a relative success and the focus quickly jumped to surfboards.

“We found that if grown to term as a building material, agave stalks could be harvested after the mother plant has reproduced itself clonally many times over, and leaving its root system intact is important. This makes agave incredibly effective for converting atmospheric carbon into stable, underground biomass...and agave can be grown almost everywhere the surf culture exists,” Headrick said. “This is the next step for surfing, to create a local system for growing surfboards to displace the materials and practices that undermine our lifestyle.”

Because agave is farmed to produce tequila, young plants are harvested and the stalks are left as a byproduct that typically gets cast aside, but when milled and laminated, the woody material is ideal for shaping surfboards.

“Agave Surf is set to launch our ‘We Grow Surfboards’ campaign to help us collect materials from local agave and spread knowledge of agave as a building material, while encouraging an appreciation for the products people buy and their sources,” Headrick said.

The company has also partnered with a nonprofit called Growers First, which is working with farmers in Mexico to help close the farm-to-wave loop.

“We are collaborating with them to produce agave plants for future cultivation.

Their mission is to advocate for impoverished agricultural communities and families,” Headrick.

The agave surfboard concept has been floating around for some time thanks to early adaptors like Linden, but until Agave Surf came along, nobody had ever tried to put a business model behind it. Headrick and Bryan changed that, and the process may change how you look at your next surfboard purchase. DP

uickly becoming one of the most dominant, and likable, rising stars in the national surf scene, South Orange County’s Kirra Pinkerton is upping her international notoriety and absolutely blitzing her way through the WSL’s 2018 World Junior Championship in Australia.

After nearly a week of competition in the finicky conditions in Kiama, New South Wales, Pinkerton has fought her way into the quarterfinals and stands a very real chance at going the distance in what is considered the biggest event in junior surfing. She’s the only surfer from the United States left in the draw on both the men’s and the women’s sides, making her accomplishment all the more noteworthy. (It should be pointed out that there are still several Hawaiians left in the competition, but the WSL considers the U.S. and Hawaii two different regions).

At 15 years old, this is Pinkerton’s first experience on such a stage. After winning the WSL’s North American region, Pinkerton was invited to the World Championship. The top two junior women and top four junior men from each region are invited to the 18-and-under contest.
