…Dirty Heads, Doheny and DSBIA?

THE LATEST: Doheny State Beach hosted a free lunchtime reggae concert by the Dirty Heads to celebrate the release of the band’s new album, Cabin by the Sea and to raise funds for the state park and Doheny State Beach Interpretive Association.

Concert promoter Omega Events produced the event in partnership with the park, 106.7 KROQ, Wahoo’s Fish Tacos and Monster Energy.

According to California State Parks’ Special Events Coordinator Lori Coble, the event drew at least 2,000 people.

The concert raised $2,700 for the DSBIA through food and beverage sales and donations from attendees, said Omega Events President Rich Sherman.

“Omega Events will donate an additional $5,000 to the DSBIA to help with their goal of reopening the visitors’ center and aquarium,” said Sherman, who also recognized Wahoo’s owner Wing Lam for donating another $5,000 to cover event costs.

WHAT’S NEXT: “Donated funds from the concert are greatly appreciated,” said Ed Neely, DSBIA secretary. “We are hoping to have the center open by October. There are still some issues that need to be worked through, but things are moving ahead.”

… SONGS?

THE LATEST: Federal regulators are looking into design and manufacturing changes of the replacement steam generators at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, which has had both its reactors out of operation since January and has no timeline for their Dana Point Times June 22–28, 2012

return to service.

To a standing-room only crowd in San Juan Capistrano, inspectors from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said that vibrations in the steam generator tubes had caused them to wear down excessively and unpredictably and led to the radiation leak that forced the rapid shutdown of the plant’s Unit 3 reactor January 31. Also, original simulations of water flow grossly underestimated the speed of water in the tubes further affecting them.

Plant owner Southern California Edison took its Unit 2 reactor offline for planned upgrades January 9 and has continued to test it in light of the tube degradation in the other reactor.

Anti-nuclear groups described the meeting Monday and the inspection process as a “sham.” Leaders of Friends of the Earth said Edison misled regulators when it failed to disclose all the design changes and bypassed what would have been an 18-month relicensing process.

Despite the criticism, SONGS’ Chief Nuclear Officer Peter Dietrich, said SCE had satisfied federal requirements to power them up in the first place.

…Doheny Village?

THE LATEST: City Council on Tuesday voted to authorize a contract extension with ROMA Design Group, the firm hired to design plans for the future Doheny Village Plan.

The city first entered a one-year $250,000 contract with ROMA in June of 2010, hiring the design firm to act as the

city’s consultant in preparing a draft plan for the revitalization of Doheny Village, the downtown area of Capistrano Beach.

ROMA’s services were temporarily suspended in June of 2011 and extended to June 2012, while the city awaited the award of $340,000 in state grant money.

WHAT’S NEXT: Kyle Butterwick, community development director said the city hopes to have an approved document for the project by the end of the year, depending on the level of public interest during the upcoming hearing process.

“A high level of public involvement could potentially prolong the project approval a bit, but we want the plan to reflect the input of the community and encourage public participation,” said Butterwick.

…Red Tagged Home?

THE LATEST: City Council on Tuesday authorized an appeal filed by Marianne Stahl, the owner of a red-tagged house on the 3400 block of Camino el Molino, to be heard by an independent hearing officer.

The home was boarded up and redtagged in February following a probation sweep that led to the discovery of unsafe conditions at the location.

Orange County Sheriff’s Deputies, present during the investigation of a parolee believed to be living in the home, reported what appeared to be serious code violations making the home dangerous and uninhabitable, said City Attorney Patrick Muñoz.

Violations, including hoarding conditions, general disrepair, unpermitted makeshift construction and bare electrical wiring, prompted city code enforcement and building officials to secure the property and disconnect the utilities.

Citing a history of code enforcement issues at the Stahl home, the city moved forward with standard nuisance abatement procedures.

Stahl filed an appeal in March and, in answer, the city provided her with a detailed list of 66 specific code violations and instructions on what needed to be done in order to bring the home into compliance.

According to the staff report, Stahl has made some progress but major code violations remain.

Efforts to reach Stahl for comment were unsuccessful.

WHAT’S NEXT: The vote allows a date to be set and delegates Council’s authority to an independent hearing officer who will be hired to preside over the appeal hearing.

…Coconuts?

THE LATEST: City Council will hold a public hearing to discuss whether problems at Coconuts Bar warrant changes be made to the establishment’s conditional use permit.

According to the notice, the review will include issues related to the bar’s security, business hours, entertainment, parking, food and alcohol service and other operational matters.

WHAT’S NEXT: The meeting will be held on June 25 at 6 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers, 33282 Golden Lantern.

A woman reported that she was in a physical altercation with her husband earlier in the morning. She said her 45-year-old husband broke her phone and pushed her to the ground. She also told officers that they have firearms in their home, possibly a shotgun behind the bedroom door.

A woman called from Russia to a second hand informant, asking to have deputies check on a 70-year-old woman who lives alone. The caller told police she heard a male’s voice on her answering machine, but the woman does not have a son.

A caller reported a male child and a mother and father all in a verbal argument in the unit below. The caller reported hearing the child screaming for the dad to leave the mom alone.

Approximately 2,359 pounds of electronic waste was collected.

ProShred shredded approximately 2,800 pounds of confidential documents on-site, a number the company said, equates to saving about 24 trees.

Year to date, Surterre’s Orange County eWaste events have shredded approximately 23,275 pounds of confidential documents on site, equivalent to saving about 203 trees, according to the document shredder’s estimate.

The installation of a large dinosaur replica at Zoomars Petting Zoo in the Los Rios Historic District has stirred up the ire of some locals, including some of the longtime families.

Zoomars owner Carolyn Franks bought the 40-foot-long, 13-foot-high apatosaurus at an auction in Anaheim and had it installed at her petting zoo on Wednesday, June 13. Less than 24 hours later, the city issued Franks a stop-work order and a notice of violation, after they received complaints about the dinosaur. “I find it offensive on some of the most sacred and cherished land in San Juan,” said Jerry Nieblas, president of the Capistrano Historical Alliance Committee and descendant of one of San Juan’s pre-Mission families. Wasted Days and Wasted Nights Many older adults spend too many years in dead-end marriages and relationships

W

hy do I keep loving you when you always make me blue?” are words from Wasted Days and Wasted Nights, a popular 1959 song (remake in 1974) by singer Freddy Fender.

Lately, more and more people have been asking me why older adults waste years staying in dead-end marriages and relationships.

A woman named Sharon wrote: “You meet someone and they express serious interest and days turn into months and months turn into years. But there is always some reason that the other person can’t totally commit—kids from a previous marriage, not the ‘right time,’ afraid of another divorce, and of course the classic, ‘Why do we need to get married ? Can’t we just live together?’

“After an on-again, off-again relationship with a man for 18 years (yes, I am a slow learner), we finally broke up—this time for good. My advice is that if a man or woman can’t commit to their partner within a reasonable amount of time (I would say a year to two at the most),

move on. Don’t waste precious years of your life like I did.

“I just turned 60, so meeting someone may be too late for me. I wasted a lot of time on the wrong man.”

It’s not only women who get stuck in dead-end relationships. It happens to men as well. I have a male friend who has dated a woman for five years. They have great compatibility and fun together. He’s ended the relationship eight times, but each time he goes back to her. She’s the one who won’t commit, because he’s 20 years older and she fears she’ll become a widow.

I know unhappy, miserable married couples who stay together. Why? I’m not an expert so I cannot authori-

tatively say why older adults remain in dead-end relationships. Everybody’s situation is unique, but here are a few of my ideas and most of them center on fear.

It’s damn hard to break the chain. It can rip the insides right out of your stomach. I know; I’ve been through it. You’re afraid you’re going to hurt the other person; you feel guilty, blame yourself.

You fear that dividing the assets is going to wipe you out financially or cost you too much money and that you won’t be able to afford to live.

Or, you fear leaving your home where you love many things that are such a major part of your life: your garden, friends, neighbors, the roominess, the location, or having to abandon a cherished animal.

Maybe you just hate being alone.

These factors are huge and have to be weighed against the other side of the coin. The longer you stay in the wrong relationship, the longer you delay starting a fresh new life and delay the possibility of meeting a new person with whom to share the remaining years.

It takes incredible intestinal fortitude to make the break, and for some, they will never do it. The price is too dear.

They may feel they are too old to start over. Staying isn’t necessarily a bad choice; it’s the best decision for them.

But as many widowed people—who didn’t make the choice but had it forced upon them—have found, the human spirit is remarkable in helping people bounce back and find some rainbows later in life.

Why do so many older people waste years by staying too long in dead-end relationships? Perhaps our readers will share their opinions.

Urged to Dream Big

T

he first familiar notes of Pomp and Circumstance began to play at Dana Hills High School Stadium shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, bringing thousands of proud family members and friends instantly to attention.

Everyone sat up a little straighter, necks craning to catch a glimpse of their graduate as the processional down the long staircase to the field began.

The sound of clicking camera shutters was immediately drowned out as proud spectators found their senior in the line of students making their way to the rows and rows of chairs arranged parallel to the lines on the football field.

After the 660 graduates, in white and blue caps and gowns, took their places and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, Principal Jason Allemann welcomed the class of 2012 to the graduation ceremony.

As a graduate of Dana Hills 24 years ago, Allemann said this day was like a homecoming for him. His full-circle return to lead a commencement as a principal was quite an honor, he said. Then he congratulated

the grads, commended them for being an impressive group of students and set the presentation of diplomas into motion.

Cheers, applause and the occasional blast of an air horn, followed the reading of each graduate’s name as they moved to the front of the stage to collect their diplomas.

Following a performance by the school vocal ensemble, the commencement speeches began.

Scholar of Scholars Ryan Lindeborg, Dana Hills’ class of 2012 top student, kicked off the speech portion of the afternoon, expressing pride in his peers.

Allison Leibold urged her fellow graduates to take risks, dream unreasonably and make a difference. “Dare to fight for your biggest dream. And be outrageous in your pursuit of a rich and fulfilling life, whatever that means to you,” Leibold said. “Let’s not allow others to define our potential.”

Aliza Braunstein told her peers, “Our ingenuity and individualism is what makes the class of 2012, truly a force to be reckoned with” and reminded them that after the thousands of minutes spent together during

their four years at Dana Hills, the four seconds it took to receive their diplomas, mark the beginning of a new perspective on life.

Alexander Brown gave the final, uplifting and entertaining address, expressing optimism for the future, to the appreciative audience both on the field and in the stands.

Senior Class President Amanda Anderson presented the class gift—a newly painted and lit school logo sign on the hillside adjacent to the stadium.

The presentation to and acceptance of the class of 2012, from Allemann to district Board of Trustees member Anna Bryson followed.

Anderson took the stage once again and did the honor of announcing the culmination of the ceremony—the turning of the tassels.

Beautiful white doves were released, taking flight above the field. Then 660 mortarboards went airborne as well, as the officially graduated seniors erupted in happy exuberance, sending their blue and white caps skyward in celebration.

elcome. Thank you for allowing me the honor to speak today. I am proud to be here with you to celebrate this day of triumph, remembrance, accomplishment, and promise for the future.

Here at Dana Hills, we have been equipped with a broad problem-solving mindset, a vast amount of knowledge and a specific set of skills and tools that prepare us for the challenging trials of our future. For example, thanks to the librarian’s persistent reminders, Dolphins will never have damaged college textbooks due to rainy days.

And with the creativity that was seen in the semi-controversial pep rally, Dolphins will be known and yes, maybe even feared, for their especially innovative side.

Class of 2012, we are a unique group of mathletes, cappies, band geeks, jeopardy junkies and notorious B.I.G.s. We are an exceptional bunch of scientists, service philanthropists, human rights activists and expressive novelists. We have a class of misses and misters, conformists and hipsters. It is inevitable that we will change immensely as we venture off to the next chapter of our lives, but through the ups, downs, twists, turns and rollercoaster ride of our future lives, I have one hope for our class.

Embrace those quirks that make you unique, and let them inspire you, for it is

through this inspiration that you will kindle your passion, forge your own path, and thrive. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” If you strive to fulfill your own individuality, then you are on the path to success. Define success by your own standards, not by those of others.

It was the making of successful Dana Hills graduates and a terrible analogy. Analogies aside, I have complete confidence in the class of 2012 and know that we have the power to change the world in our own way.

No matter where we end up, let us embrace the serendipity that happens to come our way and let us not restrict our unbounded intellect.

As a graduating dolphin, I can speak for all of us when I say I am very grateful to all the staff, teachers and classmates who made these four short years so memorable and rewarding. We are also here today because of the love, wisdom and guidance of our wonderful parents. I would like to graciously thank them for their unparalleled sacrifices of sleep, sanity and hair color.

Although it is a day to thank mentors and supporters, it is just as much our day. Stop for a second; ponder where you are now and where you will be. Young grasshoppers, we still have much to learn before we become the senseis of our time. But…take the moment in; you are graduating! So, I leave you with this message. Have the audacity to take risks, trust your decisions, realize your full potential by daring to journey down the unpopular path and appreciate yourself as individuals. Congratulations Class of 2012!

X GAMES 2012 PREVIEW

Starting June 28, the best skateboarders, BMX riders and rally cross racers in the world will descend upon L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles for the 2012 Summer X Games.

This year, two high-profile athletes from the area, San Clemente’s Ryan Sheckler and Capo Beach rally cross racer Tanner Foust, will compete in the action.

Competition starts June 28, but Sheckler and Foust won’t appear on your television screen until July 1, when the headlining events get underway.

which features a schoolyard-inspired course. Rails, jumps and a rideable art sculpture will all be in play for Sheckler, who has two X Games gold medals in the event.

Kickball is Back in Dana Point City’s recreational co-ed kickball league starts July 9

ast year 12 teams took to the fields of the Dana Point Community Center every Monday and Wednesday night in hopes of taking home the coveted Dana Point Co-Ed Kickball Championship title.

Regular season winners Booze on First and the Dirtbags survived the six-game regular season gauntlet but fell short in the post-season, tournament format. Those who rose to the occasion in the post-season were Monday night competitor Cobra Kai and Wednesday night’s The Grass Kickers, both of whom came out on top in the tournament and will claim bragging rights heading into the new season, which starts July 9.

For the upcoming season, City of Dana Point Recreation Coordinator Kolleen Wallace and her crew have added a little twist to the kickball format.

“We have expanded this year’s format to two different skill levels. As we’ve grown, the teams have grown and the skill level has been divided. We want to offer something for both the new players and those who are a little more competitive,” Wallace said.

ing and enjoyable of the league the recreation department offers, according to Wallace. She has seen dozens of people show up to just about every game to cheer on their family and friends out on the diamond.

This year Wallace expects the kickball league to have its biggest season yet. More than 12 teams have already signed up, including defending champs The Grass Kickers, and she expects more teams to join as the registration deadline approaches.

“What makes kickball so appealing is that everybody can play…We all played this game when we were 10 years old on the playground…It’s open to all ages and genders, and it’s not as intense as other games that require more practice skills,” Wallace said. DP

Foust, 39, an X Games veteran and host of the History Channel’s Top Gear USA, has medaled in five out of his six X Games appearances in rally cross, winning three gold medals, one silver and one bronze in his career. In the rally cross event, Foust will have to maneuver his rally car around the streets of downtown L.A. and take off several times on a jump that will send riders 70 feet through the air.

The X Games will be broadcasted live on the ESPN/ABC network of channels, with the skateboard street and rally cross events starting at 3 p.m. on Sunday. —Steve Breazeale

Going into last week’s 2012 Surfing America USA Championships in Huntington Beach, Tory Gilkerson, 19, and Rachael Tilly, 14, were pictures of focus and determination as they put on epic battles in the national competition. Both had easily qualified for the event, having taken WSA West Coast Championship longboard titles in May—Tory in Open Women and Rachael in Girls U14 and U18. In USA Championship competition, Rachael surfed her way to a third-place finish in Girls U18. Tory came up with a stellar performance to be crowned the Women 18+ Longboard champion, her Tory Gilkerson and Rachael Tilly.

Shortly after the finals, they made a beeline to LAX and boarded a plane for Hawaii en route to the Roxy Wahine Classic, an ASP women’s professional longboard tour qualifier scheduled to begin the following day. Both collected valuable ASP qualifying points at the Roxy. Tory’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals and Rachael made it to the semis. Both took second place in their respective amateur divisions.

With last season’s results, Tory was already qualified for this year’s October ASP Women’s Pro Longboard tour. Rachael’s result makes her the frontrunner among five U.S. women vying for a spot on the 2013 World Longboard Tour. The next stop for both will be the East Coast Surfing Championships at Virginia Beach in August.—Andrea Swayne
