Five things Dana Point should know this week DHHS Student Co-Directs Play at Camino Real Playhouse THE LATEST: Evan Gordon, a junior at Dana Hills High School, says that in cowriting and co-directing an original play, he’s learned that it’s really hard to get high schoolers to be quiet.

Gordon partnered with Ty Sterling, a Saddleback College student, to write and direct the play Souvenirs—a satire on storytelling cliches. Audiences can enjoy the play 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, Nov. 1-2 at Camino Real Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano.

“My parents have been nothing but supportive,” Gordon said.

Sterling and Gordon held auditions in Gordon’s home after announcing casting on social media. Students that Gordon had never met showed up to audition. Now the majority of the cast and crew is comprised of current and former members of DHHS’s South Orange County Schools of Arts program.

The toughest part about production has been building the set pieces. Gordon says they’ve either borrowed props or built set pieces from scratch, including a five-foot-tall treasure chest. The cast and crew have been rehearsing twice a week since summertime, which includes character building activities.

“All of this has given me a lot of experience,” Gordon said. “Some of us have severe social anxiety and we’ve had to learn how to manage it while developing leadership skills. This whole experience has been aggravating, fun and hilarious.”

Gun Brandished Following Three-Car Crash in DP THE LATEST: A man involved in a threevehicle crash attempted to flee the site of the collision before brandishing a firearm when witnesses followed him.

The crash occurred at 7:12 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28 on Pacific Coast Highway near the intersection with Golden Lantern.

There were three individuals in the Mustang, and at least one exited the vehicle and attempted to leave the area, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department public information officer Carrie Braun.

“Some witnesses of the collision started to follow that individual, and that’s when he brandished a firearm,” Braun said.

“OCSD believes he fired a shot, but it did not strike anyone.”

Andres Gama, 18, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The man suspected of firing the gunshot—identified by police as 18-year-old Francisco Saavedra—returned to the scene of the crash and was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats.—LB

Time Capsule Unveiled to the Public at DP Harbor THE LATEST: Nearly a year after the County of Orange entrusted the Dana Point Harbor’s revitalization to the Harbor Partners, a 20-foot clock tower—which will house a 50-year time capsule—was unveiled before the public on Monday, Oct. 28.

This will be the second 50-year time capsule for the county, with the first one also being located in Dana Point. The first one was established in 1966 with a ceremony at Doheny State Beach, launching the harbor’s construction.

“At that point, nearly all of the community members who participated were from Dana Point, Laguna Beach, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano,” said OC Board of Supervisors Chairperson Lisa Bartlett.

“The majority of the communities in the Fifth District didn’t even exist back then.”

Bartlett helped facilitate the publicprivate partnership for the harbor’s revitalization after 20 years of talks for improvements. Bryon Ward, one of the Dana Point Harbor Partners, will revitalize the retail experience and landside activities in the harbor with Scott Burnham through Burnham Ward Properties. Joe Ueberroth will oversee the marina project,while R.D. Olsen will develop the Marina Inn Hotel.

THE LATEST: A longtime Homeland Security attorney has thrown his hat into the ring for the 73rd Assembly District race in 2020.

Chris Duncan, a San Clemente resident whose 16 years at the Department of Homeland Security ended in early October, has worked in both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Duncan goes on to state that he believes Sacramento has become too partisan and is not focused on getting results.

According to his campaign website, Duncan says he will oppose new state taxes and work to reduce the tax burden on middle-class families.

“This includes opposing unnecessary and harmful fees, charges and projects, such as the toll road,” the website states.

Duncan plans to spearhead the creation of a bipartisan Special Committee focused on investigating and reducing waste in the state government, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of state agencies.

Duncan is a Democrat, according to the office of the California Secretary of State.

The 73rd Assembly District encompasses much of southern Orange County, including Dana Point.

WHAT’S NEXT: California is holding its primary election in March 2020. Incumbent Assemblymember Bill Brough will run for reelection. Republicans Melanie Eustice and Ed Sachs have announced their bids as well. Democrat Scott Rhinehart, who lost to Brough in the 2018 election, also has announced his candidacy.—LB

Gloria Day Gets Greenlight for Columbarium Project THE LATEST: Gloria Dei Lutheran Church received approval to construct a columbarium on site after a rare 3-2 vote from the Dana Point Planning Commission on Monday, Oct. 28.

The church, which is located at 35011 Stonehill Drive and founded in 1966, initially included a columbarium project in its master plan in 2014. However, the columbarium was removed from the project due to its controversy within the surrounding neighborhood.

A columbarium is a building with niches for cremated remains to be stored. City staff consider a columbarium to fall under the definition of a cemetery. Cremation and living near cemeteries is prohibited in some religions, including Orthodox Judaism and Islam.

The project includes a 4’4” pre-fabricated columbarium to be installed on an existing bench within the church’s contemplation garden at the rear of the project site. It would hold up to 444 urns.

The church is within a Community Facility zone, which means the construction of a cemetery (or columbarium) would require a conditional use permit.

During the project’s public hearing at the Dana Point Community Center, several neighboring residents spoke against the project.

“My religion does not allow me to live near dead people,” said Lilius Smith.

“And this project would make it more difficult to sell. My daughter’s window would face (the columbarium), and she is nervous to be around dead people.”

While several opponents of the project cited religious differences and the possible drop in real estate value, city staff said there is no concrete research that shows cemeteries cause a decline or increase in real estate value.

Additionally, several residents and churchgoers spoke in favor of the project, including the Gloria Dei’s pastor, David Mattson, who addressed common questions and concerns that had been brought to his attention.

“We looked at how other columbariums impacted surrounding communities, and we could not find negative impact. This is not a moneymaker for the church,” Mattson said. “Like all churches, Gloria Dei deals with people from all walks of life. We help people at every stage of life, and we hope this (columbarium) will be part of our overall ministry.”

During commissioner comments, Chair Roy Dohner expressed concern for how the original project was approved under the condition of public art—which in the case of the original project was satisfied with stained glass windows.

Commissioner Dani Murphy said she was on the fence.

“Everybody knows that neighborhoods are the fabric that keeps us together,” Murphy said. “It’s hard for me . . . excuse me for stuttering . . . I have some insight with property owners who bought their homes decades ago and would not have foreseen this. And you have to have great empathy for those who did not expect this.”

The commission voted, 3-2, to grant the permit to Gloria Dei, with Dohner and Murphy voting against it.

WHAT’S NEXT: The project can be appealed no later than Nov. 12.

After the planning commission’s vote, Pastor Mattson reflected on the hearing.

Conclusions Reached Investigator Concludes Gender Bias Allegations Against Muller Are Unfounded, Lewis Objects

n investigator determined that allegations of gender bias and discrimination brought by Dana Point Councilmember Debra Lewis against Mayor Joe Muller were unfounded—a conclusion that Lewis calls a sham.

The complaints stem from a council meeting earlier this year but make references to incidents that occurred back in 2016.

Lewis had filed a complaint against Muller after a contentious city council meeting on Feb. 19. For the meeting, she had added an agenda item in order to discuss restructuring the planning commission so that each councilmember could nominate a candidate of choice from a pool of applicants. That nominee, preferably a resident of the district he or she would represent, would then need a majority approval from council. The planning commission is not districted, as council is, but prospective commissioners need majority approval after following through an application process as described in Policy 302.

“Each district is going to have different issues. Each councilmember has different goals and priorities as determined by the voters of their district,” said Lewis. “It’s more fair and representative if each of the commissioners represents the interests of their district.”

Following Lewis’s remarks, Mayor Joe Muller passed the floor to Councilmember Jamey Federico. Federico asked what would be done if there were no qualified applicants within one of the districts. Lewis answered that a councilmember could nominate a candidate from another district in that situation, but that the preference would be his or her own district.

“My question remains unanswered; how do we achieve what is being discussed here if we don’t have qualified people from a specific district? I think there are a lot of faults to this and ultimately I want to hear what other councilmembers have to say about it,” Federico said.

Lewis attempted to respond to Federico’s remarks before Muller instructed that she did not have the floor. Muller and Lewis proceeded to disagree and speak over each other.

“Miss Lewis, you do not have the floor,” Muller said multiple times.

“This is our chance to talk and debate.

It’s very difficult to talk to someone and have an intelligent discussion. . . . But if you don’t want to do that, we’ll go round and round,” Lewis said.

Upon each councilmember stating their position on changing Policy 302, Muller gave the floor back to Lewis, the lone woman on city council, to speak.

“I notice when Wyatt was talking, you had no problem cutting him off, asking him some questions, having a back-andforth discussion . . . you didn’t jump in and say he didn’t have the floor. . .” Lewis said. “This is not the first time I have been treated differently on this council.”

Lewis alluded to members of the public who had spoken at the podium about her treatment on council in the past.

“I think tonight made it very clear,” Lewis said. “You were just fine having a back and forth with another councilmember to clarify something, which I have no objection. You were fine with Mr. Federico having a back and forth with me. But when I posed a question, you jumped in. I’m now adding my voice to the many residents who have asked me how I tolerate this.

Well, I don’t.”

In response, Muller denied treating her differently. Lewis’s motion to change Policy 302 was voted down, 3-2, with Muller, Federico and Councilmember Richard Viczorek voting no.

Following adjournment of the council meeting, Lewis stated to Dana Point Times that there is misogyny on city council.

On Feb. 21, Lewis brought a complaint alleging gender bias, gender discrimination and sexual harassment and supplemented the complaint on Feb. 22.

Soon thereafter, City of Dana Point

requested the investigative services of Megan Miller.

“Ms. Miller conducted some of the interviews, and then it was discovered Ms. Miller might have a conflict of interest,” the report said.

According to Lewis, the conflict of interest was that Miller had previously retained a contract with Orange County Fire Authority, while Mayor Muller chairs the board of directors for OCFA. The city then sought the services of Norman A. Traub & Associates, LLC to conduct an independent investigation, and investigator Kristine Exton was assigned “on or about” May 3. She reviewed prior interviews and proceeded with the investigation, according to the report.

On May 14, Lewis brought a second complaint alleging retaliation.

There were a total of 14 witnesses interviewed, which included two separate meetings with Lewis and Muller. Exton also reviewed submitted documents and footage of council meetings held on April 19, 2016; Jan. 15, 2019; Feb. 19, 2019; and May 7, 2019.

The report references a Feb. 22 Dana Point Times article in which Muller is quoted as saying, “Miss Lewis is not treated differently; she just acts differently.” According to the report, Lewis told the investigator that this was like saying she was asking for it in the same manner that rapists accuse their victims of asking for it.

During a May 7 council meeting, councilmembers discussed the Orange County Sheriff’s Department contract.

Lewis brought a retaliation complaint against Muller after a motion was made to approve the contract, and Lewis made a

substitute motion to wait until OCSD concluded pay negotiations with its deputies.

“Mayor Muller’s anger was so palpable, he willingly disregarded Council’s longstanding Rules of Decorum… to silence me,” the report quotes Lewis stating.

Councilmember Jamey Federico called the question (meaning that further discussion would not change any councilmembers’ minds). The calling the question should have had a second but Muller did not obtain it.

According to Lewis, the timing of the incident followed the discrimination complaint and Lewis’s refusal to sign a waiver of the investigator’s conflict of interest— implying retaliation.

Muller stated he made a mistake but that if he or anyone makes a mistake, anyone can make a point of order—which no one had. The investigator determined it was not retaliatory and that four out of five councilmembers have violated Rules of Decorum in the footage she had watched between February and May. In the conclusive remarks Exton made in the report, she states Lewis exaggerated, omitted important information and was inaccurate in her testimony. Ultimately, Exton determined that the allegations of discrimination and retaliation are unfounded.

On Aug. 29, Lewis submitted a letter to Dana Point City Manager Mark Denny and the city’s human resources manager, Shelly Velez to memorialize Lewis’s objections to the report. The objections detail how Miller was retained as the initial investigator and that Lewis was not informed of the conflict of interest until two months into the investigation.” danapointtimes.com

EYE ON DP “Dana Point knew or should have known of the conflict prior to retaining Miller,” Lewis states. “Despite Miller’s bias, it is apparent from the report that the subsequent investigator (Kristine Exton) relied upon some or all of the first investigator’s work product in forming her conclusions.”

On Aug. 30, Exton issued a letter to Denny and Velez regarding Lewis’s objections to the investigation.

Lewis takes issue with Exton and Miller not contacting or interviewing numerous witnesses who had come forward publicly with their personal observations of Muller’s alleged gender bias.

One of the witnesses interviewed by Miller was Cindy Fleming, who served on the Parking and Circulation Task Force and labeled as Witness 1 in the report. The description for Witness 1 describes the witness to be a female member of the Parking and Circulation Task Force. Fleming was the only woman to serve on the force.

Although she declined Dana Point Times’ request for comment on the investigation, she confirmed that she had never been contacted by Exton for an additional interview.

In the Summary of Witness 1, the witness states she finds Muller’s behavior abusive and negative.

“I tend to think he has an issue with women who challenge him; it might be he has an issue with anyone who challenges him,” Witness 1 states.

In Exton’s letter, she states that not everyone on Lewis or Muller’s list of suggested witnesses were interviewed.

Instead, the top three witnesses identified

by Lewis were interviewed and the top two witnesses identified by Muller were interviewed, among several others.

“Please recall that (14) people were interviewed during this investigation,” Exton states. “Ms. Lewis had identified Witness 1 (Cindy Fleming) as having personally experienced gender bias from Mr. Muller.

She was interviewed.”

Exton goes on to state that Lewis did not identify other witnesses with personal experiences. The other listed witnesses say they had seen gender bias by attending city council meetings.

“After the interviews of Ms. Lewis’s top three witnesses… the investigator determined that none credibly supported that Ms. Lewis suffered gender bias from Mr. Muller. As none of Ms. Lewis’ top witnesses could credibly support Ms. Lewis’ contentions, none of the other nine witnesses supported Ms. Lewis’ contentions and the investigator had determined Ms. Lewis was not credible, the investigator had determined Ms. Lewis was not credible, the investigator deemed it unnecessary to interview others on Ms. Lewis’ and

Mr. Muller’s witness lists.”

Lewis also objected to Exton not personally speaking to some of the witnesses and still determining their credibility. Exton countered that she had listened to audio recordings of the interviews conducted by Miller and determined the prior investigator did a “good job; no bias by the prior investigator was found in her questions or tone.”

Exton’s response did state she agreed that Muller did behave inappropriately toward “Witness 1” but assessed her to not be credible, citing that she was hesitant in her speech, choosing her words carefully.

According to Lewis, Exton did not find any of the witnesses she submitted to be credible.

One witness Exton spoke to, whose summary appeared to be relatively neutral, opined that Lewis and Muller just don’t get along.

These people don’t get along as well as they should, the witness states. She stated the council is divided into two camps, and that “no one will break ranks. For the betterment of the city, councilmembers need to learn to work together and compromise.”

Dana Point Times requested comment from Exton and the office of Norman A. Traub & Associates, LLC. A representative from the office stated it was against the firm’s policy to comment on personnel matters.

The festival, established by Laguna Beach resident Ben Warner, will be a medium through which artists and locals can expand the conversation around conservation. Having spent most of his career as “an executive and consultant in the Outdoor Industry,” Warner’s dedication to the conservation movement has extended to the general Laguna Beach community.

According to Warner, the Film Festival will prompt viewers and audience members “to get outside more while also protecting these resources for a more sustainable future for generations to come.”

The Coast Film Festival includes sponsors such as Patagonia, Hobie and REI—all of which support Warner and the festival’s conservationist message.

A complete movie screening and event list will be released in the coming weeks.

DHHS Hosts “Beyond the Pod” Career Event Dana Hills High School will host its first College and Career event, Beyond the Pod, geared toward the senior class on Nov. 7-8.

Luci Coppola, assistant principal, and the DHHS staff were inspired after other schools in the Capistrano Unified School District hosted similar events.

According to student-provided information, approximately 40% of students don’t go to a four-year university after high school. With this information, Coppola planned Beyond the Pod, so all students are supported and have resources for whichever path they choose post-graduation.

The students will have the opportunity to submit a college application with the assistance of parent volunteers and partners from local community colleges and California State Universities.

The event will take place during school hours and will provide separate areas for scholarship and financial aid workshops, Dana Point Times November 1-7, 2019

Laguna Beach Hosts First Annual Coast Film Festival The city of Laguna Beach will be hosting its inaugural Coast Film Festival from Nov. 7-9. For its grand opening, the film festival will be highlighting local filmmakers, photographers, and artists, all focusing on Laguna Beach’s coveted coastline.

The film festival will be feature a theme of bringing “together two distinct communities from the land and sea,” according to a press release. Movies, photographs, and art pieces featuring ocean and landscapes will be promoting the festival’s overarching purpose of environmental preservation.

“The investigation was a sham,” Lewis said. “It was a conclusion that was searching for an investigation.”

She added that blaming the person bringing the complaint is a classic technique of deflection.

“The report called me dramatic and that I over exaggerate,” Lewis said. “I don’t want to call myself the victim because I’m not a victim. But I’m bringing my concerns forward and they are being dismissed.”

Muller did not have much comment other than that he believed the report spoke for itself. He provided the following statement: “It is unfortunate the taxpayers in Dana Point had to go through this investigation.

As with all things political in nature, the truth, always, is revealed in the end. Now let’s get back to work,” Muller said.

Lewis said she was unsure if she would pursue other avenues regarding her complaints.

A California Public Records request was submitted to the City of Dana Point to see how much money the gender bias investigation against Muller cost, as well as the total amount of money the city has spent in the last five years on discrimination investigations. The city acknowledged receipt of the request but the information had not been made available by press time.

At a time when most cities are prohibiting or limiting short-term vacation rentals (STRs), three of our city councilmembers seem to be promoting them.

STRs are actually unsupervised businesses in residential neighborhoods, with new customers moving in every few days.

In 2016, the council passed an ordinance allowing two-day rentals in all residential neighborhoods except those with prohibitive CC&R restrictions. This policy would have changed residential zoning and provided real estate investors with an incentive to buy up properties, exchanging neighbors for tourists. The impact of STRs on neighbors is well documented—parties and noise at all hours, lack of adequate parking, littering, safety concerns, and other nuisances.

In a referendum, Dana Point voters overwhelmingly vetoed this ordinance.

More than 4,000 residents soundly rejected turning our neighborhoods over to investors. Despite this clear indication of residents’ disapproval, the council majority now seems poised to bring STRs back.

The City of Dana Point will soon be sending out a survey to “selected members” of our community. Why “selected” instead of random citizens? That would make the survey legitimate instead of a sham! A third party should write the survey to avoid bias in the questions, and respondents’ views on effects STRs have on neighborhoods must be included in this survey if the council majority truly wants to know how Dana Point residents feel about STRs. Previous public records reviews exposed major issues with STR regulations. Even when illegal STRs, even those in HOAs, are fined, the city attorney indicated that fines could not be enforced consistently. There is no logical reason to expand regulated STRs in Dana Point to compete with our lucrative and well-regulated hotel industry. Simply put: our council should not support an Airbnb invasion of residential neighborhoods. Leave commercial endeavors to commercial zones, and preserve neighborhoods for neighbors.

I wish to respond to a recent “Letter to

the Editor” concerning Councilman Jamey Federico’s response to Short-Term Rental issues at a recent city council meeting.

First, I am an owner of several shortterm rentals. My wife and I live in Capistrano Beach adjacent to our rental units.

Secondly, we have no personal, political or business relationship with Mr. Federico.

I completely reject the assessment of Mr. Federico’s statements and his opinion that the Short-Term Rental ordinance was forced onto the citizens of Dana Point, or that it’s unpopular.

This ordinance was well-received and was complimented by the California Coastal Commission. What is the issue with a limited number of short-term rentals in the City of Dana Point?

There are 153 active licensed and permitted short-term rental units in the entire City of Dana Point, which has more than 17,000 residential dwellings in the city limits. Dana Point’s main source of income is from taxes collected by hotels and from short-term rentals commonly called TOT taxes. We depend upon the hotel industry, of which short-term rentals fill a unique niche, and on the restaurants that serve our visitors for the city’s income.

Councilman Federico’s comments at a recent city council meeting did not exert any pressure at that council meeting. The opposite was the case. A city council subcommittee led by Councilwoman Debra Lewis and Councilman Paul Wyatt presented a “draft” letter to the Coastal Commission for council approval. The draft letter, if approved, and a new ordinance would effectively eliminate 99% of all short-term rentals. After hearing testimony from many short-term owners, all Councilman Federico did was to request that input is received from those of us that support short-term rentals in this process. What was obvious is that short-term rental supporters had no input in the initial draft letter.

We are a small group of entrepreneurs, mostly individual owners, with many of us living in Dana Point. We personally depend upon the extra income generated by our short-term rentals, which not only benefits us individually but also supports the overall economy of our lovely city.

A RESPONSE TO THE OCT. 25 LETTER TO THE EDITOR BY ROGER JOHNSON

The cited Bulletin of Atomic Scientists article by financial analyst David Epstein relates to the projected financial aspects of a nuclear weapons detonation, a dirty bomb explosion in a major city or a “hacked” operating nuclear power plant. Mr. Epstein draws potential financial market parallels between a nuclear attack and the post-World War II German and Japanese economies. A check of world financial history does not reveal a worldwide market collapse after the Three Mile Island, Chernobyl or Fukushima reactor accidents.

Exposures from low-level liquid and gaseous releases from San Onofre are in accordance with Federal limits as defined in 10CFR50 Appendix I. These limits keep annual public exposures to a small fraction of natural background. Annual Radioactive Effluent Release Reports and Annual Radiological Environmental Operating Reports are publicly available and substantiate no radiological impact to the public or the environment from San Onofre releases.

I know this information, because the early reports were my responsibility.

San Onofre named two staff members and voluntarily participated in the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine study titled “Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities, Phase 1,” completed in 2012. A follow-on study group last met on April 3, 2014. The project was discontinued by Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff for solid technical reasons, not fear of some imagined poor result.

I fully agree with Mr. Johnson regarding the glaring lack of a U.S. spent fuel and military waste repository. The National Academy of Sciences studied this issue from the 1950s to about 1987. Disposal in a deep geological site was recommended and selected. Yucca Mountain, Nevada, adjacent to the weapons test site, was selected and work began. The President Obama/Senator Reid cabal quickly halted funding and work. President Donald Trump requested funds to assess restarting Yucca Mountain. Congress has not allocated funds. Here, San Onofre, all other U.S. nuclear power plants, and the military sit, waiting for our federal government to do its job and provide a high-level radioactive waste repository.

here really are two types of movie viewers. There are those who live and breathe film, absorb the history and production aspects of the features and study every frame on screen. And there are those who just want to be entertained. Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse was one of those times where I could see both ends of the spectrum.

Shot in glorious 32mm black-andwhite film with a retro 1.19:1 aspect ratio, the film centers on two lighthouse keepers in 1890 on a tiny island during a treacherous recurring storm.

Ephraim (Robert Pattinson) and Thomas (Willem Dafoe) gradually drive each other insane from the isolation and their jarring personality differences.

While trying not to lose his patience and sanity with the mercurial old man, Ephraim also begins to sense something supernatural might be haunting the lighthouse.

On a strictly technical level, The Lighthouse is very effective and breathtaking. You feel as though you’re watching a moving, vintage photograph with the cinematography. The atmosphere, tone and direction are also genuinely unsettling, and the acting from the two leads is superb, particularly Pattinson’s. But like with Eggers’ previous indie hit and instant cult classic, The Witch (2015), I left the film emotionally cold. By the end of both pictures, I didn’t particularly feel like I cared about the characters or what was going to happen next. Granted, Eggers is the type of director who is more about a mood than a plot. But sometimes that can be a divisive factor and not work as a viewing experience. t took six months of work/collaboration, and tonight the Council voted, 4-0, to pass the No Smoking Ordinance!” Irvine councilmember Farrah Khan exclaimed in a Facebook post about the citywide public smoking ban on Oct. 22.

On Oct. 11, Senate Bill 8 was signed to ban smoking in state parks and on state beaches. Senator Steve Glazer, who introduced the bill, said, “This bill will provide a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for people, fish and wildlife. . . .

Many forest fires have been caused by discarded cigarettes, and this bill can help there, too.”

By Hoiyin Ip the lead on citywide public smoking bans in 2017. Dana Point actually adopted it at the first council meeting in 2018. It was controversial. During those months, I picked up 3,573 cigarette butts during five cleanups on the same route, covering about three-tenths of a mile. Coastal Cleanup Day data shows cigarette butts are the No. 1 litter item. And filtered butts are made of a single-use plastic known as cellulose acetate.

Whenever it comes to a ban like this, some would argue about freedom. Free-

dom, as explained by Fr. James Martin in The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, is “the freedom to become the person you’re meant to be, to love and to accept love, to make good decisions, and to experience the beauty of creation.”

Unfortunately, leadership is realized in hindsight, and leadership is a lonely road.

Much of my effort has been identifying a potential leading councilmember for an environmental cause, then support her or him. I’ve been repeatedly told Orange County is not San Francisco, not Santa Cruz, not Manhattan Beach—the “not” list goes on—along the same coastline.

But this little strip of OC actually got a few things done for the ocean: • In 2012, Laguna Beach and Dana Point banned plastic bags.

• Between 2007 and 2012, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, San Clemente and Dana Point banned Styrofoam food receptacles. And this year, Dana Point and San Clemente tightened the regulations a little bit.

But we’re far from done, not even with smoking. Look at how our local cities scored in American Lung Association’s 2019 State of Tobacco Control report: • Laguna Beach: C • Dana Point: D • Irvine, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano: F Irvine decided an F is not acceptable anymore.

Boys Water Polo Finishes Strong in League The Dana Hills boys water polo team received a challenge to its perennial spot as a top-two team in the South Coast League, but the Dolphins posted a strong final week of the regular season to maintain their position.

Dana Hills dropped a home game to El Toro on Oct. 8, but the Dolphins returned the favor on Monday, Oct. 28 by beating the Chargers in their own pool, 11-7.

El Toro ended up one game behind Dana Hills in the South Coast League standings, as the Dolphins closed their schedule with an impressive 17-9 home win over San Juan Hills.

The Dolphins, ranked No. 16 in Division 1 and 2, finish 14-14 overall and 5-3 in league play. Dana Hills is second in the South Coast League and will play in the Division 2 playoffs.

he regular trips continue to pull in the regular catches, but the annual halibut derby has opened to spice up the schedule at Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching.

In his weekly report, Captain Brian Woolley said the half-day trips pulled in more calico bass, with the flylined sardines remaining the best bait for those catches.

The rubber lures had some good action this week as well, but the sardines still brought in the bigger legal fish. Sheephead made it into the catches as well, with clam and shrimp baits earning the bigger catches.

The Dolphins finished with a 3-5 record in league and in a tie with the league’s final playoff spot with Tesoro. Dana Hills and Tesoro split two tight matches in the regular season, so a tiebreaker match was needed on Friday, Oct. 25 to determine the spot.

W

inning league titles isn’t about individual performances; it’s about coming together as a team and lifting up the whole squad. As the old adage goes, a high tide lifts all boats.

The San Clemente High School Surf Teams wrapped up league competition last week and finished with undefeated records.

The boys went 6-0, and the girls went 5-0-1.

All season, it was a complete team effort.

Led by Head Coach John Dowell, the Tritons’ tradition of excellence continues season after season. Last year, they claimed their 16th varsity state title and eighth junior varsity title at the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Interscholastic Championships. And after their performance last week and domination of their league, could another state title be in the offing?

The surf squad’s overall success comes through hard work, dedication to their sport, an amazing team spirit and positive approach to competition. All of those earlymorning practices at T-Street have most certainly been worth the effort. Congratulations to all of the surfers and coaches at San Clemente High and good luck with the rest of the season. DP

It’s good to be Ian Crane these days

an Clemente’s Ian Crane isn’t on the WSL’s Championship Tour like his friends Kolohe Andino and Griffin Colapinto, but that hasn’t stopped him from climbing to the top of the professional surfing game.

At the beginning of October, Crane went to France to compete in the Red Bull Airborne competition. Featuring the best aerialists from around the world, in heavy beachbreak conditions that looked like State Park on steroids, he won. And on the heels of the biggest victory of his career, last weekend he premiered his new video project, Beach Head The Movie, at Lost’s Catalyst surf shop in San Clemente.

“I was super-psyched to have it there, because that’s where they used to have old parties and bands and stuff,” Crane said in an interview with Dana Point Times last week. “My house was right up the street. It’s the best vibe place for me to do something in town, so I’m super-psyched that they let me have it there.”

In the grand tradition of surf movie premieres, Crane invited a couple of bands to come rock the parking lot. They had piñatas going and, to be sure, a good time was had by all.

“There’s a ton of ‘rad’ kids in San Clemente that are psyched to just go to something. I know when I was a kid, I was psyched to go to anything,” Crane said.

“This isn’t some crazy production; it’s only 15 minutes long, but it’s the perfect amount of time for somebody to hang out.”

On Saturday night, Crane and company took the show on the road to a gallery in L.A. for another premiere. The next morning, he jumped on an airplane to go compete in the Vans Pro at Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu. The surf was forecast to be in the 10- to 20-foot range thanks to the first big northwest swell of the season.

“Two premieres back-to-back, then who knows what’s going to happen at Sunset? . . . I hope I survive,” Crane said, laughing. “It’s been a long time working on the film, and there have been some ups and downs, so I figured it would at least be cool to have a party when it’s done instead of throwing it on the Internet and it’s gone in a day.”

For Crane, Beach Head is the culmination of a year’s worth of surfing around the world. Besides showcasing his own Dana Point Times November 1-7, 2019

supernatural abilities in the water, the film also features his friends Griffin and Crosby Colapinto, Kolohe Andino and Luke Davis.

“I was surfing a bunch and had all these clips on this hard drive, and then lost them all when the hard drive crashed,” Crane said. “So then I got them all recovered, and once they were recovered, I figured I should make something cool with the footage. That was a couple months ago.

“I went on two different trips where I paid a filmer to come along with me. It was all out of my own budget, which is different than a company trip or a contest trip, so with all this money I’d put into getting clips, I didn’t just want to throw it down the gutter.”

But the film project isn’t just a one-anddone thing. Crane sees it as the beginning of something new, not just a catalog of video clips. With friend Gabe Garcia,

the two are endeavoring to create a surf brand of their own. Like the film, they call it “Beach Head.” They recently launched beachhead.fun online and are excited about creating some beach-friendly products in the near future.

“We don’t want it to be like a clothing company, but just something weird that does beach kit stuff—umbrellas, coolers, that kind of stuff—so you can have a killer beach setup,” Crane said. “We don’t really have anything up there (online) yet; we gotta make some stuff, but I have stickers and T-shirts to go with the video. Hopefully, with all this stuff comes more. Even if it fails and it wastes my money making stuff, at least I’ll have gotten an education on how to do something other than surf.”

Whatever happens, surfing is working just fine for Crane these days. He’s at the top of his game and is doing it on his own creative terms. There’s a lot to be said for that. DP
