Precedent Analysis

Amalgamated Dwellings, NYC Designed by Springsteen & Goldhammer in 1930, it was originally built for the families of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union.

The intention of the design was to provide direct sunlight to all of the rooms in the dwelling, as well as providing a large, protected garden/courtyard space for the tenants.

SPURA, Lower East Side The site is located in SPURA (Seward Park Urban Renewal Area).

Around 1965, the neighborhood was nearing the end of a “slum clearance� period that transformed this small tenemant urban fabric into empty mega blocks destined for high density housing.

6 Unit Housing

Lower East Side For the first design project, we were asked to design a 6 unit dwelling that would house three distinct demographics from around the area: the elderly, lower income families and college age people.

The concept was to have each demographic living there to feel as though they owned their fair share of the complex.

40 Unit Housing

Lower East Side Located directly across Broome Street to the north lies the site for our next project: 40 Units. The main concept for this project is similar to the 6 Unit. Thick structural walls were implemented to divide each group of units so an individual would be able to know exactly where they live inside the building by oberserving it from outside. Also with this project I explored the true meaning of “high density housing� while keepng the idea of giving the inhabitants a feeling of a very private entrance to their apartment.
