Entertainment Designer Greg Damron is an Entertainment Designer with experience designing theme parks and themed environments around the globe.

Greg held a position in Universal Studios Senior Core Group. As such, he worked closely with developers, operators, economic, feasibility and costing consultants, architects, land planners, ride and show designers, ride engineers and advertising agencies on a multitude of projects around the world. Greg headed up the design effort for Universal Studios Japan in Osaka as Creative Director, Vice President Design and Planning, from conception through the first year and a half of development while in the Core Team. He initiated and headed up thematic design for Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, through the conceptual development phase producing the theme park overall master plan as well as the overall Universal Studios Orlando Resort site master plan. As a Vice President in Core, Greg led design and master plan efforts for Universal’s New Business Group producing designs for Universal’s International Theme Park Model and City Walk-On-The-Road projects for consideration in multiple cities and countries around the world. Greg has worked for over 30-years designing projects such as Lotte World in Seoul, Korea, Schlitterbahn’s Vacation Village in Kansas City, Kansas, Clarke Quay and the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, the
1986 World’s Fair in Vancouver, Caesar’s Magic Empire at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Rolling Stones Experience, The Grammy Exposition, Playboy Las Vegas and Paramount Pictures first themed international development. Greg has recently produced personal projects including three brand new projects for: Universal Studios currently under concept development and planning for Europe, South East Asia and China; Bearfire, a new form of environmental familyoriented recreation in Dallas, Texas; Provence an authentic medieval village resort, spa and retail destination also in Dallas, Texas; and the Star Casino in Sydney Australia. Currently Greg is doing projects in the United States, China and for Universal Studios in Korea. Greg and his wife Laurie made St. John their permanent home in 2002. With a history of studying maps and creating master plans, Greg produced the following PhotoMaps to see if it could be done, out of fascination and purely self interest. The only printed map hangs at St. John Brewers’ Tap Room in St. John’s Mongoose Junction. After a few requests Greg has made the maps available for friends. Global Design VI is an on-line magazine with plans to make available, information as it developed in sufficient detail with plans to continue developing maps throughout the Virgin Islands and Caribbean. www.DamronDesign.com

NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science
N
OAA’s (NCCOS) conducts and supports research, monitoring, assessments, and technical assistance to meet NOAA’s coastal stewardship and management responsibilities. Three of NCCOS’s centers have on–site research facilities, while two centers conduct research through analyses of field data or sponsored extramural research. The Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment’s mission is to assess and forecast coastal and marine ecosystem conditions through research and monitoring. CCMA conducts field observations on regional and national scales. The center provides the best available scientific information for resource managers and researchers, technical advice, and accessibility to data. Located in Silver Spring, MD, the scientists of CCMA conduct field observations on regional and national scales. NCCOS focuses its research on four ecosystems: coral reefs; estuaries, including the National Estuarine Research Reserves; National Marine Sanctuaries; and coastal ocean regions. NCCOS activities focus on five key ecosystem stressors: climate change, extreme natural events, pollution, invasive species, and land and resource use. Understanding how these stressors affect ecosystems is vital for assessing the impacts on coastal communities and effectively managing our nation’s ocean and coastal resources. Parts of this particular map have been made available to the public through the National Park Service and a few other resources. This is the first map to extend from the tip of the British Virgin Islands all the way to Culebra off the eastern shore of Puerto Rico. It can be surprising to see the actual relationships of the various islands for some of us. This photo map was produced from a series of photgraphs that the CCMA took in March of 1999

Global Design VI assembled the captured images and then working from pre-existing maps added graphics calling out most every bay and beach on St. John and St. Thomas. The oceans, islands and keys are unfinished and required additional work for the maps to be presentable. In some cases the information didn’t exist and was produced as faithfully as possible through PhotoShop methods. The final product was produced strictly out of self interest as this information has only recently become available. The PhotoMaps are printed on Photo Satin Inkjet Paper in California at a professional printing company. The recommended print size for viewing detail best with the naked eye are: St. John 36x62 or larger and St, Thomas 36x80 or larger.

he US Virgin Island PhotoMaps were compiled from over 300 separate photos each to achieve the highest resolution possible. The original sizes are 7 x 12 feet for the St. John Map and 10 x 22 feet for the St. Thomas Map. The images on this page and the next are full scale details from the overall St. Thomas and St. John Maps. The original images are from a number of data sources including: SIO - Scripps Institute of Oceanography; NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; U.S.Navy; NGA - National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency; and GEBCO - General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans. On January 17, 2009, the entirety of Google Earth’s ocean floor imagery was updated to new images by SIO, NOAA, US Navy, NGA, and GEBCO. Google Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographic information program that was originally called EarthViewer 3D, and was created by Keyhole, Inc, a company acquired by Google in 2004. Keyhole, Inc, founded in 2001, was a pioneering software development company specializing in geospatial data visualization applications and was acquired by Google in 2004. Initially launched as a spin-off of Intrinsic Graphics, first round funding came from a Sony venture capital fund and others, additional capital came from an NVIDIA bundling deal, from the CIA (via its venture-capital appendage, In-Q-Tel) and from angel investor Brian McClendon (who later came on as a board member and VP). Keyhole’s marquee application suite, Earth Viewer, emerged as the highly successful Google Earth application in 2005; other aspects of core technology survive in Google Maps, Google Mobile and the Keyhole Markup Language. The name “Keyhole” is also a homage to the KH reconnaissance satellites, the original eye-in-the-sky military reconnaissance system now some 30 years old. Many people use the applications to add their own data, making them available through various sources, such as the Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) or blogs. The St. John and St. Thomas PhotoMaps were produced from images gathered on Google Earth from Europa Technologies, TerraMetrics, DigitalGlobe, and the U.S. Geological Survey. www.TheStThomasMap.com

The Fourth of July happened in St John on July 5th in 2010. Carnival is the same time of year every year in St. John and culminates with a parade on the Fourth of July. The Fourth happened on a Sunday this year and no parades are allowed on Sundays, so we had the Fourth of July on Monday the fifth of July. The fireworks are launched from an auto barge that comes around from Enighed Pond and positions itself above a coral reef in Cruz Bay directly in front of the downtown waterfront. www.DustinDamron.com

There is an overlook above Cruz Bay near the restaurant Asolare. From this vantage point you can see what is, one of the very best fireworks shows in the world. The explosions light up the sea bottom and the reef below the barge. In the States this would undoubtedly be illegal as at times the barge itself appears to be exploding. We enjoy our liberties in St. John and get to see one of the greatest shows in the Caribbean.
