Juneteenth is known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. This is the day the announcement was made that slavery had been abolished.
Memorial Day starts the blockbuster summer movie season. There have been several mentions for this summer. The one movie I think will be good is Ma, starring Octavia Spencer. What will you go and see? When I was young, summer meant going to Rosewood Recreation Center to play on the Tennis team and taking piano lessons. Givens Park was a place where I went swimming (actually I put my legs in the water. I can't swim). I also spent time at the Carver Library, the original building, where I checked out books to read. I loved going to the library and deciding what I wanted to read. Summertime is a time for picnics, festivals, and my favorite ice cream. There is a yearly Ice Cream festival that happens in June. Keep your eye out for the date. Harold's on Airport was where I went for ice cream. I started going with my sister and nephew and then when I got married, we went on Sundays to get one until the place closed. Sandy's on Barton Springs was also and still is a good place to get ice cream.

The neighborhood I grew up in was small and there was not through traffic. So all of us would play softball, kickball and sit around laughing and telling jokes. Those were great times. We went outside and actually played and went into the house when the sun went down. The only electronics I had was a tape and cassette deck. As I grow older, I take my summer memories to heart because I will not live that life again. The memories of my summer are good and full of fun, education, and activities. What summer memories do you hold dear to your heart?
The Miss Juneteenth Austin Scholarship Pageant is one of the activities that are apart of the community celebration. The motto of the pageant is "We're more than a beauty pageant."
