Interview with Riders Against the Storm (RAS)

Chaka and Qi Dada Ras Ujima: How did you and Qi Dada Ras come together to form Riders Against the Storm?

Qi: I am a LIfe Coach. I am using music and dance movements and the healing arts for spiritual, mentally journey. It is called Team Big Legs. I am calling it a female body church. It is where Zumba meets womb wellness which is not very popular in Austin, and should be, and it also meets meditation and yoga.

Chaka: I met Qi Dada Ras in Providence Rhode island where we are from. Our paths kept crossing because we were working in our community with the youth, as performers and artist, spoken word poets so we became friends. In 2004, we wrote our first song together but even then we did not want to pursue a music career full time, we just enjoyed doing it. We did not know at the time what it took to do it full time, but we moved forward.

Riders Against the Storm was formed in 2004. After entering a contest, we won and toured with a hip hop group Dead Prez and our journey started from that point.

Ujima: How do you describe your music? Do you write your own songs?

Qi: We describe our music as hip hop dance party music. However there is an element of ceremony. By element of ceremony, I mean a way as a healing practitioner I can be aware of bringing a more of spiritual experience to our performance.

It is a way to unleash the power to understand our bodies so we can release the pain and trauma weary around in the body. I teach how to move forward by listening to their body and take it seriously and eliminate the self-hatred. But it will also be fun.

Ujima: Where do you play around town?

Chaka: We have a lot of plans but we want to use art and music to transform spaces.

Festivals, movies, using what we know that is powerful to transform people.

Ujima: Do you find Austin a good place to build your musical brand?

Qi: A 100%. Overall everything we sought out to accomplish we have met. We are able to be full time musician. Austin has been our launching pad. We wanted to be considered the best music you could hear.

Austin has been receptive to our music.

Ujima: What do you hope people feel when listening to your music?

Free and refreshed.

Ujima: Any last comments?

Qi: I encourage the community to explore the arts as much as possible. We have musicians coming to major venues, support them. Let the the world know we [Austin] are here.

Boosting Self-esteem in Black Males

Black men are struggling. In fact, one could make the case that black men have not been in a worse position in the history of America. Sure we have an African American President and that is a wonderful sign of the strides America has made as a nation, but if you examine the plight of the black community, you will find that many of the ills that have historically plagued our communities are still there.

What is the problem? Why are black men having such a hard time? I believe many of our problems stem from a lack of self-esteem. Self-esteem literally means self-value. Do black men value themselves?

It is time for Black men to embrace their divinity. It is time for black men to embrace their essence and their essence is divinity.

Do you see yourself as created in the image of God? If you do, how could you not value yourself? I submit that you can’t hold onto to both beliefs at the same time. You can’t believe your essence is divinity and at the same time believe that you do not have value. Yet our communities indicate otherwise. Would people who value themselves kill each other over athletic shoes?

Would you kill each other if you saw each other as God or as divinity?

Latin educere, which means to bring out. Naturally, the next question should be what is that we wish to bring out? It is our divine essence. Education means to bring out what is within us. And what is within us is spirit. What is within us is divinity. Black men in America have been conditioned to believe they are other than divine.

Understanding your essence is where your true power lies.

When I look at the plight of black men many times I see it as a challenge of education, spiritual education. The experts tell us that education is to key to solving our problems. Is this true? Do we not have education in our communities?

We need a spiritual rebirth, a spiritual awakening. I am not speaking of religion here. I am speaking of universal principles that we need to master as black men to manifest the life we wish to create. We are creators. There are many examples of people who have attended church their entire lives but who know very little of the spiritual practices beyond prayer that are available to them that can transform their lives.

The word education means to bring out. It comes from the

spiritual laws. If you are reading this and it is your first time reading that they are such things as spiritual laws, you should be very excited.

You should be excited to know that you have been playing the game of life without even knowing the rules.

Imagine what you can accomplish if you played within the rules. You should also be excited to learn that there is nothing difficult about this. You don’t need a degree or money to be able to access this power that is your birthright. You simply have not been informed until now. It is your birthright to have access to the Creator and to live in harmony with the laws of the universe.

Once you start to live your life in harmony with spiritual law your life will improve.

Who’s in the Driver’s Seat?

As I was leaving the grocery store the other day I found myself waiting for cars to go by before I pulled out into traffic. Each time I saw the lane open and it appeared to be safe to pull out a car from another lane would switch over to it.

But I was not deterred. I patiently waited; however, I can’t same the same for the lady who was behind me. Instead of a short and polite beep of her horn she blasted it.

What was my response?

I didn’t jump and floor it to appease her need at the expense of my own safety. I didn’t spin around or jump out my car in anger. No, what I did was continued to patiently wait there until it was safe for

me to go. You see, what I knew about my car that she didn’t was that it was due for a tune-up and had been driving a little sluggish. If I would have pulled out into traffic at the blowing of her horn it could have been detrimental for myself and others.

Lesson: Don’t be so inclined to jump at the whim or expectations of others. Know yourself and your situation so well that when it is time for you to pull out and get on the open highway you are in the driver’s seat and not someone else.

About Fibromyalgia Scientists have estimated that fibromyalgia affects 5 million Americans age 18 or older. For unknown reasons, between 80-90 percent of those diagnosed with fibromyalgia are women, however men and children can be affected.

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain, diffuse tenderness, and a number of other symptoms. The word “fibromyalgia” comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek ones for muscle (myo) and pain (algia).

Fibromyalia can cause significant pain and fatigue, and it can interfere with a person’s ability to carry on daily activities.

Fibromyalia is considered a rheumatic condition,a medical condition that impairs the joints and or soft tissues and causes chronic pain.

In addition to pain and fatigue, people who have fibromyalgia may experience a variety of other symptoms including: cognitive and memory problems (referred to as “fibro fog”), sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, headaches, and irritable bowel syndrome,

restless legs syndrome as well as sensitivity to loud noises or bright lights, depression is also in this group.

Research has shown that people with fibromyalgia typically see many doctors before receiving the diagnosis. One reason for this may be that pain and fatigue the main symptoms overlap with those of many other conditions. Another reason is that there are currently no diagnostic laboratory tests for fibromyalgia, standard test fail to reveal physiologic reason for the pain. A doctor familiar with fibromyalia can make a diagnois based on criteria established by the American College of Rheumatology: a history of widespread pain more than 3 months, and presence of diffuse tenderness. There are 18 sites on the body as possible tender points a person must have 11 or more for a diagnosis.

The Power Of Story And Song That

CHANGE THE WORLD

If you have lived in Austin for any length of time, you have most likely heard the name Saul Paul, the rapper floating around town. I had become familiar with him on a news show where he was interviewed about his journey from being incarcerated to graduating from UT Austin. I found his story very interesting. It took me a while to connect with him. We finally did connect and we sat down to talk about him the man and his journey in music and giving back to the community by helping and inspiring young people.

THE BEGINNING OF THE JOURNEY I am a musician with a message. Been doing my music and speaking for 10 years. It started with me working at KVUE for a year. On March 22, 2003, is very significant because I started my own business, and I’ve been working out the kinks ever since. I could not decide if I wanted to be a rapper or motivational speaker. I decided to create my own path with acoustic hip hop and speaking. One of my teachers invited me to speak at a concert and a new world was opened and it keeps working. When I think about my work I really don’t have a specific group that I speak with, I can do it all, but the value is seen with urban youth and incarcerated youth because of my path. When I speak about my incarceration and struggles I had they also hear me say the right thing can change their life. They hear about how I turn my life around which lead me to where I am today.

KEY THINGS THAT CHANGED HIS LIFE My Faith. Christianity. Jesus. I got saved. He may have always been my savior but later he became Lord and he called the plays. I have comfort in being me and it come from him. I was made for a purpose. I had consequences for my bad choices. I would talk to myself in the mirror

while in prison and I really had to look at who he was. It is funny how life can make a full circle. I use to commit crimes to get Nikes, now I am meeting with Nike to collaborate on different projects. My grandmother played a big part in my life. She was an angel. She raised me and coming up I made good grades. She taught me about life and hope and she gave me unconditional love. I would get encyclopedia’s and flash ads for time tables for Christmas. I used to get teased for making good grades. They would say “He is stupid, he made A’s.” I am on purpose with a purpose, and bringing that purpose to fruition.

HOW TO TELL YOUNG PEOPLE TO LOOK AT THEIR PURPOSE I like that I live in two worlds where I’m growing older and yet young kids still like me. But purpose had not been shared with young people. Our school system is not created to build entrepreneurs. Individuality and purpose is disruptive at school. I feel we need to look at options for what a child is good at doing.

WERE YOU INSPIRING BEFORE PRISON? Initially, no I was not well put together. I was a follower which is why I went to prison. I was arrested in front of my high school. When I returned to school I was shown reverence and love- I decided to become good at being the worse. I did hit a brick wall and realized I needed to change and aim differently. Different goals. I don’t know if I was naturally smart or trained to be. I did graduate UT Austin with a 4.0. I want to share how I do inspire now. I participated in a TED conference in Westlake, 95% of the participates were white. kids. I did my presentation and did not think too much afterwards about it. But then I received an email thanking me for telling his story. He wanted to go to college but thought his chances were over due to his truancy cases. But he was inspired and hope to be successful. He asked for help to get into college. It was the power of my story and song that changed his life.

WHO MENTORED SAUL PAUL? A few key people come to mind. Thad Rosenfield whom I met whiled at KVUE spoke at UT and told a story about going to UT twice. Because he shared the story it made me feel comfortable because I went twice. I reached out to him and he was open to speaking with me. He took a chance on me he didn’t judged me on present vs. past. He had a life changing impact on my life. Orthell Ballage- He was my UT Adviser and mentor through college. He gave insite into the School of Communication that helped me a great deal. In my professional life, David Porter always saw my potential.

He is my accountability partner.

COMMON ISSUES YOUNG PEOPLE FACE As I travel around and speak with young people they struggle with their purpose and vision , the pressure of having a dream but not meeting their goal. I had a friend who was a natural go getter. She committed suicide because she felt like failure even though she had met all her dreams except being able to get a job.

Young people want to be heard.

WHATS NEXT? Tour to Tour 2 like (Tower To Tower) Represent the prison tower to the ut tower it will be music, a book and film.

Tour to Tour is the next phase of the trilogy album book and website wedreamin3d.com. It will tell stories from my travels meeting people. I will deflect the light from me, but tell other stories that can teach and inspire.

HIS MUSIC The Future My music is life, songwriting and my guitar. Rap is about the words. Acoustic hip hop is my own genre. It allows me to connect with the audience on a pure level. Writing music comes at different times for me.

Life strikes me in Saul Paul mode. What do I feel?

That’s what I write about.

I have a new album coming out. The single is written from the perspective from someone in prison. How they lived through the person who wrote a letter to them. The new CD will be released this summer along with my summer tour.

My vision is to be a media mogul movies and music create the alternative global media to inspire others.

I learned about Blogtalk Radio shows awhile ago. I used to listen to all type of shows as I worked. Never in mind did I think I would ever host a show until I met DeMarco McSwain. This is our conversation about his show that he host on Tuesday evenings at 7pm. It is a wild ride but lots of good conversation.

UM: How long have you been doing the show?

DRT: I have been doing my show since October 2012.

UM: What made you do the DeMarco Real Talk Show?

DRT: I wanted to do something that I enjoy doing and me I love meeting and talking to new people. I also love being truthful and keeping it real and I wanted to spread the love helping others and giving everyone an outlet so they could vent and get support from me and The Real Talk Team, I then said that this would be the best thing to do is have a Radio Show that’s for everyone to enjoy.

UM: What is your mission for the show?

DRT: I want to give people VOICES because there are so many people out here today that are afraid to speak or scared of what will happen if they VOICE their opinion so that is where I come in at because “ We Don’t Tell You Want To Hear, We Tell You What You Need To Hear ” and that is how I got my slogan because true enough the truth hurts. so just like another thing I say “ Keep It Real Or Keep It Movin’ ” because I am always going to do what I also say “ Keep It Real ”.

UM: Who has been some of your favorite guest?

DRT: All of my guest have been great from B Angie B. Chris Jasper, Michel’le, Cheryl Cooley, Ira Parker, Michelle Bradshaw, IRP6, Titus Broom, all of the great guest we had through the whole month of October for the DeMarco Real Talk Cancer Awareness Shows 2013, not to mention before you joined the Real Talk Productions / Entertainment Team you and your sister were great guest also Damita Miller-Shanklin and Mary L AKA Margaret.

UM: What makes your show different than other shows?

DRT: I give my listeners the chance to host the shows with us, give show ideas inputs and suggestions, we touch on any and every type of subject topic or problems head on and we are not afraid to Voice our opinions on anything.

Oven Fried Chicken

Creamy Cucumber and Tomato Salad

Ingredients

Ingredients

1/4 cup butter or margarine

Original recipe makes 4 servings Change Servings

Fruit Smoothies

Great way to start the morning, could be a snack, or just a tasty dessert. Your children will enjoy and could easily help with the preparation.

1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 3- to 3 1/2-lb cut-up whole chicken Directions 1 Heat oven to 425°F. Melt butter in 13x9-inch pan in oven. 2 In shallow dish, mix flour, paprika, salt and pepper. Coat chicken with flour mixture. Place chicken, skin sides down, in pan. 3 Bake uncovered 30 minutes. Turn chicken; bake about 30 minutes longer or until juice is clear when thickest part is cut to bone (170°F for breasts; 180°F for thighs.)

2 cucumbers, sliced 2 tomatoes, sliced 1/4 onion, chopped 1 cup creamy salad dressing (such as Miracle Whip®), or more to taste 2 tablespoons white sugar, or to taste salt and ground black pepper to taste Directions

Banana Blend:

Combine cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, creamy salad dressing, sugar, salt, and black pepper in a salad bowl. If salad seems too sweet, add more salad dressing; if too tart, add more sugar.

Chill before serving.

1 banana, 1 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup each vanilla yogurt and milk, 2 teaspoons honey, a pinch of cinnamon and 1 cup ice.

Reading Lounge: See What’s On Our Bookshelf RECOMMENDED FOR ADULTS

This Has Been a Public Service Announcement

What inspired you to become a writer?

Time and circumstance. I learned when my mom died in 1997 that it was therapeutic to purge my emotions by writing things down and just getting it out. So many times when we are heartbroken, we can’t really adequately express to the person who hurt us how they hurt us or why we’re so hurt but I’ve learned that you can always tell yourself everything…and that’s what I do when I write. I give unfiltered positive and negative feedback on different aspects of life. I started sharing some of my thoughts and writings on fb and people seemed to enjoy them and now, they are bound in my first book. It was a wonderful journey of self-exploration and discovery.

What is the book about?

My book is a collection of my thoughts. It is kind of where “mother wit” meets my law degree. I talk about 7 facets of life from my perspective and my book is therefore, divided into 7 sections: General, Relationships, For Men, For Women, Fitness, Single Parenting and Religion.

Is the book written as PSA’s? If so, what made you choose this writing design (for lack of a better word)?

Yes they are little pearls of wisdom. Some consist of several paragraphs regarding each thought and some are only one sentence. I chose that style because the majority of them came from Facebook posts and tweets. The format wasn’t planned…it just kinda happened.

What do you hope readers will take away from the book when they are done?

I hope they will benefit from my experiences

and the experiences of others to gain a different perspective on different aspects of life. So many times, people believe or think certain things to be true and absolute because they’ve never seen a different perspective. That’s what I offer…perspective. My opinions are sometimes skewed based on my perspective but there are no lies in my book. It is what it is.

How do you balance all you do as a parent, work, in your community and now as a new author?

It’s not that hard. I have ridiculous energy. I am a single mom, a lawyer, a judge, an aerobics instructor, a singer, an author, a motivational speaker, a radio show host, a sorority member and a member of several boards and organizations. But I guess I have more free time than most because I know how to work smart. I get plenty of rest and exercise and because I haven’t been in a relationship in over a year, that frees up even more time. My son is 16 and has his own life happening. But because my time with him is so precious to me, many times, I drag him along with me to various events. I’m flying to Anaheim, California Tuesday to sing for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals and my son is coming with me so we can run around Disney Land for a while. I absolutely adore my baby boy!!

What advice can you give someone who wants to write their book?

Start now. Don’t wait until you think the time is right because life is a series of events and changes. Something else will come along next week to prevent the time from being right. So make the time right…right now.

What are you reading right now?

I’m not much of a reader. I have reading PTSD. :-) Because I have 3 degrees, I had to read a lot. I actually read enough during law school to last me for the rest of my life. So if it’s not about a case, I’m probably not going to read it.

Where will your book tour take you and when will it start?

It started on my dearly departed Mom’s birthday on April 25 in Hattiesburg, MS. My community has been extremely supportive and I am so grateful. I don’t have my schedule etched in stone just yet but I am reaching out to several book clubs and I plan to work in regional areas in Alabama, Georgia, Texas, South Carolina and Tennessee every other weekend over the summer and into the fall.
