“We have to go faster”: we have to go faster, Mozambique premier Aires Bonifacio Alì remarked in a single breath a few months ago. Faster: perhaps circular time, the time in which one day follows on from the other and they are all alike, is about to run out. And perhaps one of those poor countries on the African continent is now entering linear time, our kind of time, at its own speed.

Perhaps. Looking at the stars as this new century dawns, Europe’s fast time actually appears to be slowing down, while Africa’s slow time is getting going again, beating faster.

Sure enough, it is inevitable that Africa will acquire clout, not that it will be sidelined.

Let us stop looking at the stars and look at the maps of international geopolitics, instead. Africa is there again. It was wiped off those maps when the Cold War ended, when any interest in projecting spheres of influence southward ceased with the collapse of the USSR. But the new/old geopolitical game that has gotten under way again over resources cannot afford to overlook Africa’s oil or its raw materials. Freed from the bipolar competition of the past, Africa is once again involved in remote competition between the superpower of the past (the United States) and the superpower of the future (China). The risk for a Europe that is always far too busy contemplating its own navel, is that it may well end up becoming of secondary importance even here - in its former colonial empires.

While we are busy waffling on about “EurAfrica”, China is beefing up its presence there and the United States is back.

China’s time, too - which is extremely fast if we look at growth rates is actually at least as circular as it is linear, because it is the lengthy, drawn-out time of a history in which the future is solidly welded to the 4

“We have to go faster”: dobbiamo muoverci più in fretta, ha constatato in un soffio, alcuni mesi fa, Aires Bonifacio Alì, primo ministro del Mozambico. Più in fretta: può darsi che il tempo circolare, il tempo in cui una giornata si ripiega sull’altra sempre uguale, stia per scadere. E che uno dei paesi più poveri del continente africano stia entrando a sua volta nel tempo lineare: il nostro, con la sua velocità.

Può darsi. Guardando le stelle di questo inizio di secolo, il tempo rapido dell’Europa sembra in realtà rallentare; mentre il tempo lento dell’Africa comincia a ripartire, a battere con più rapidità.

L’Africa è destinata a contare, infatti, non a diventare marginale.

Guardiamo, invece che alle stelle, alle carte della geopolitica internazionale. L’Africa è di nuovo lì. Ne era stata espulsa con la fine della guerra fredda, quando, con il crollo dell’URSS, era anche cessato l’interesse a proiettare a Sud il gioco delle sfere di influenza. Ma il nuovo/vecchio gioco geopolitico in corso, quello per le risorse, non può permettersi di saltare il petrolio e le materie prime africane: liberata dalla competizione bipolare del passato, l’Africa torna ad essere interessata dalla competizione a distanza fra la superpotenza di ieri (gli Stati Uniti) e quella di domani (la Cina). Il rischio, per un’Europa sempre troppo alle prese con il proprio ombelico, è di diventare secondaria anche qui, nei suoi ex imperi coloniali: mentre pensiamo alla “EurAfrica”, aumenta la presenza cinese e tornano gli Stati Uniti.

Anche il tempo della Cina, velocissimo se guardiamo ai tassi di crescita, è in realtà circolare almeno quanto è lineare. Perché è il tempo lungo di una storia in cui il futuro si salda al passato. Il tempo cinese è quello della consapevolezza di sé: in cui l’Impero di Mezzo, dopo due secoli di declino, torna a pensarsi come tale.

China and Africa. In Europe’s mindset, there was “the rest of the world”.

Today that “rest of the world” has become a crucial part of it. And if we look closely, it is a cross between two different ways of experiencing circular time: as a projection of power (China), and as a projection of existence (Africa).

This cross between two different beats is going to forge the picture of the future. And not only of their future, of our future too, in our capacity as the former controllers of linear time.

“We have to go faster”: in the Mozambique premier’s view, things are moving too slowly. In particular, time is beating too slowly for a society suddenly rocked by the rising price of grain and of other basic commodities. In the past twenty years, Mozambique’s economy - one of the economies most heavily dependent on European and Italian aid - had begun to follow a path of virtuous growth, enjoying a growth rate of about 10% a year, yet with results that barely reflected that fact if, at the end of the day, some 37% of the population still live on less than a dollar a day and fully 56% have no access to water. Mozambique is still a country where the average life expectancy goes no higher than 50. So time there is short rather than merely circular.

Can we kid ourselves that the clocks in Africa and in Europe can carry on showing a different time forever? Mozambique wants to reduce its degree of dependency faster, but it is still going to need international aid. In that sense, China’s economic growth is both part of the solution (rising demand in the mineral industry; increase of foreign investments) and part of the problem (the rising price of farm commodities, in a country that imports over 60% of requirement).

Trapped between these two images of China, Mozambique continues to turn its gaze, at least in part, toward Italy and Europe. It is time for us not to shut our eyes but to open them wide and look - in order to understand.

La Cina e l’Africa. Nelle fotografie mentali dell’Europa, esisteva il “resto” del mondo. Oggi, il resto è una parte essenziale. Ed è l’incrocio, in effetti, fra due modi diversi di vivere il tempo circolare: come proiezione della potenza (la Cina) o come proiezione dell’esistenza (l’Africa).

Questo incrocio fra i battiti segnerà le fotografie del futuro. E insieme al loro anche il nostro, quali ex-controllori del tempo lineare.

“We have to go faster”: per il primo ministro del Mozambico le cose vanno troppo lentamente. Soprattutto, il tempo batte troppo piano per una società scossa di colpo dall’aumento dei prezzi del grano e di altri prodotti di base. Negli ultimi venti anni, l’economia del Mozambico – una delle economie più dipendenti dagli aiuti europei e italiani - aveva cominciato a crescere secondo una traiettoria virtuosa. Ritmi di sviluppo attorno al 10% all’anno; ma risultati che vi corrispondono poco, alla fine, se il 37% della popolazione continua a vivere con meno di un dollaro al giorno e il 56% non ha accesso all’acqua.

Il Mozambico è ancora un paese in cui l’aspettativa di vita non arriva ai 50 anni. Il tempo è contratto, quindi, prima che circolare.

Possiamo illuderci che gli orologi dell’Africa e dell’Europa possano battere in eterno ore diverse? Il Mozambico vuole ridurre la propria dipendenza, più in fretta; ma avrà ancora bisogno di aiuti internazionali. Da questo punto di vista, la crescita economica della Cina è parte della soluzione (l’aumento della domanda nel settore minerario, la competizione per gli investimenti esteri) ed è parte del problema (l’aumento dei prezzi agricoli, per un paese che importa più del 60% del fabbisogno).

Stretto fra queste due immagini della Cina, il Mozambico continua a volgere la testa, almeno un po’, verso l’Italia e l’Europa. E’ il momento di non chiudere gli occhi; ma di guardare, per capire.

Preface

The first time I journeyed to the southern hemisphere, to Mozambique, I instinctively looked out for the stars. I wanted to see them in order to work out my position, to find out where I had ended up.

At that latitude people are accustomed to getting their south using a very bright constellation called Crux, or the Southern Cross, which consists of four stars. The most important of these, Acrux, is the brightest, but unlike the Little Bear in the northern hemisphere, in which the Pole Star indicates the Celestial North Pole, there is no star in the southern hemisphere accurately indicating the Celestial South Pole. Acrux is slightly off the true Pole and thus it does not accurately indicate the south: an approximate calculation based on the pairs of lines formed by the Southern Cross can only point us broadly toward the Celestial South Pole.

I also found myself observing the moon. The phases of the moon are the same in both hemispheres. When the moon is in the first quarter in the northern hemisphere, it is in the first quarter in the southern hemisphere as well. Yet at that latitude I noticed something that took me completely by surprise: the “hump� on the moon, which is always to the west for us inhabitants of the northern hemisphere when the moon is waxing or to the east when it is waning, in that sky with which I was totally unfamiliar challenges all known laws by lying peacefully on the horizon.

These observations led me to engage in an exercise which I love, involving listing, ordering and classifying (in this instance) the geographic, spatial, and thus also temporal differences that still exist between the north and south of the world. In my curiosity I would like to identify the different categories of time and to observe people’s perception of those differences in the different geographic areas; to try to understand on the 10

Premessa

La prima volta che mi sono trovata nel sud del mondo, in Mozambico, istintivamente ho cercato le stelle. Volevo vederle per capire la mia posizione, per capire dove ero arrivata.

A quelle latitudini si usa cercare il sud tramite una costellazione molto luminosa chiamata Crux, o Croce del Sud, formata da quattro stelle tra le quali Acrux è la più brillante. Ma, a differenza dell’Orsa Minore nell’emisfero boreale, in cui la stella Polare indica esattamente il Polo Nord Celeste, Crux, nell’emisfero boreale non possiede una stella che indichi esattamente il Polo Sud Celeste. Acrux è leggermente distante dal Polo e dunque non riesce ad indicare esattamente il sud: un calcolo approssimativo, partendo dalle coppie di linee formate dalla Croce del Sud, può fornire solo una direzione approssimata del Polo Sud Celeste.

Mi sono poi trovata ad osservare la luna. Nei due emisferi, le fasi lunari sono le stesse: quando la luna è al primo quarto nell’emisfero boreale, è al primo quarto anche in quello australe. Tuttavia, a quelle latitudini, ho osservato una cosa ai miei occhi del tutto sorprendente: la “gobba” della luna, che per noi abitanti dell’emisfero boreale è sempre a ponente quando la luna è crescente, o a levante quando la luna è calante, in quel cielo, a me del tutto sconosciuto, tale “gobba”, sfidando qualsiasi legge, se ne stava placidamente sdraiata sull’orizzonte.

Tali osservazioni mi hanno condotto a praticare un esercizio a me caro: elencare, ordinare e classificare le differenze, in questo caso, geografiche, spaziali, e dunque anche temporali, che sussistono tra il nord e il sud del mondo. La mia curiosità vorrebbe individuare le diverse categorie temporali ed osservare le percezioni che si hanno di queste nelle differenti aree geografiche: tentare di capire, da una parte, le nozioni che definiscono il tempo e dall’altra, l’impatto che queste hanno sull’uomo contemporaneo.

Time in the Other World! This could be a fully-fledged paradox. The same time experienced at the same moment in different areas of the world seems to me to go by at different speeds and to produce different results.

I think that the passage of time, too, follows a rhythm that is directly proportional to the introduction and diffusion of new technologies. I find myself musing on the meaning of my own time by referring to Time in the Other World, because discontinuity and continuity on the one hand, and measurable time and experienced time on the other, form pairs of opposites that trigger reflections on what being contemporary really means.

Time

In all likelihood our remotest ancestors came to their first conclusions on the passage of time by observing the most basic astronomical phenomena such as the various phases of the moon, the alternation of day and night and the cycle of the seasons. Later on, calendar time made it fairly simple to place the individual in a world inhabited by numerous other individual, a social world.

But the sky binds us inexorably to the passage of time, and it also defines time’s cyclical and linear nature: time is a reiteration of events that follow on from one another within the same matrix. Circular time is the opposite of linear and open time. Linear time allows us to devise developments, plans, and prospects for progress, which generally tends to mean technological progress in any country, and the social need to determine time has never been as important as it has become in recent years, in the modern era, when countries have aspired and still do aspire to increasingly sophisticated forms of organization.

Tempo dell’Altro Mondo! Questo potrebbe essere un vero e proprio paradosso. Lo stesso tempo, vissuto nello stesso momento in territori diversi del Mondo mi sembra che scorra a differenti velocità e produca differenti risultati. Mi sembra anche che il tempo scorra secondo una proporzionalità diretta rispetto l’introduzione e la diffusione delle nuove tecnologie. Mi trovo ad interrogarmi sul senso del mio tempo riferendomi al Tempo dell’Altro Mondo in quanto discontinuità e continuità da una parte, tempo misurabile e tempo vissuto dall’altra, formano coppie di opposti che generano riflessioni sul mio essere contemporaneo.

Tempo

Con molta probabilità i nostri più remoti antenati hanno tirato le prime conclusioni sullo scorrere del tempo grazie all’osservazione dei fenomeni astronomici più elementari: le diverse fasi lunari, l’alternanza del giorno con la notte, i cicli stagionali. In seguito, il tempo del calendario ha permesso, in modo abbastanza semplice, di inserire l’individuo in un mondo abitato da molti, in un mondo sociale.

Ma è il cielo ci lega inesorabilmente allo scorrere del tempo e, inoltre, lo definisce come ciclico e come lineare: il tempo come reiterazione di eventi che si susseguono all’interno di una stessa matrice. Il tempo circolare si contrappone ad un tempo lineare ed aperto. Il tempo lineare permette di disegnare le evoluzioni, i progetti e le prospettive di sviluppo. In generale, in qualsiasi Paese, tale sviluppo è sempre più tecnologico e l’esigenza sociale di determinare il tempo non è mai stata così importante come negli ultimi anni, quelli dell’età moderna, durante i quali gli Stati hanno aspirato, ed aspirano, ad organizzazioni sempre più sofisticate.

Al tempo cosmico, oggettivo e lineare, corrisponde in modo simmetrico un tempo che trascorre in modo più personale, più intimo. Quel tempo che passando, ci consuma trasformando molto lentamente la nostra immagine, i nostri tratti, le nostre forme. Con lo scorrere del tempo la nostra vita sembra acquisire velocità fino al suo compimento, quando tutta è trascorsa, lasciandoci, sul serio, senza fiato. Quel tempo intimo che pare grande e rotondo come il cielo al quale sembra impossibile attribuire un senso: sarebbe come tentare di dare un significato a Dio o chiedersi perché alcune montagne arrivino ad altezze così sconsiderate, oppure perché gli oceani siano tanto profondi.

Il tempo intimo è anche legato al tempo biologico. La velocità del trasporto delle cose, e anche delle persone, ha conosciuto in circa duecento anni una considerevole accelerazione. Grazie all’evoluzione delle infrastrutture, grazie a molte invenzioni, per ultimi gli aeromobili spaziali, dalla fine dello XIX secolo siamo passati da qualche chilometro orario a delle velocità che possono superare le migliaia di chilometri orari. La diligenza, il treno, i transatlantici ci portavano verso longitudini lontane senza il benché minimo divario temporale, oggi l’aereo in relativamente poco tempo ci sposta verso spazi remoti creando molti punti di rottura nella continuità del nostro tempo biologico. Mentre per un lungo periodo le principali necessità dell’uomo sono state soddisfatte dall’unità di misura minima del tempo, il giorno, oggi siamo quotidianamente sottoposti a seguire un tempo misurato con unità ben più infinitesimali: ore, minuti, secondi, decimi di secondo, fino ad un miliardesimo di secondo. Le grandi distanze si misurano in unità di tempo, in anni luce. Ci sentiamo obbligati, a volte in modo doloroso, a far coincidere il nostro tempo più intimo con quello misurato. Mi viene allora in mente che forse solo afferrando 13

Objective and linear cosmic time is symmetrically mirrored in a time that passes in a more personal, more intimate manner - the kind of time, which in passing, wears us down and slowly changes our image, our features and our shape. As time goes by, our life almost seems to pick up speed until it comes to an end, until it is all over, leaving us literally out of breath. It is a kind of time that seems as large and as round as the sky, and it feels impossible to assign any meaning to it. It would be like trying to impart meaning to God, or wondering why mountains are so inconsiderately tall, or the sea so deep.

Personal time is also linked to our biological clock. The speed at which objects and people are transported has increased exponentially over the past 200 years or so. Thanks to the development of infrastructures and numerous inventions, the most recent being spacecraft, we have progressed from a few kilometers an hour in the late 19th century to speeds that can be measured in terms of thousands of kilometers per hour. The stagecoach, the train and the steamer carried us to distant lands without any time difference at all. Today the airplane shifts us across vast spaces in a relatively short time, creating numerous fractures in the continuity of our biological clock. While for a long time man’s basic requirements were met by the minimum unit in the measurement of time, namely the day, today we are forced on a daily basis to cope with time measured in far more infinitesimal units: hours, minutes, seconds and tenths of seconds, and even down to one-billionth of a second. The largest distances are measured in units of time known as light years. We feel forced, sometimes at the cost of tremendous suffering, to ensure that our personal time coincides with measured time. All of this prompts me to think that only seizing the speed we can halt time and learn to go slowly, we can only manage to overcome the shortness of time by realizing just how short it is.

Leisure time, or what is known as free time, is time that is not measured, time that is left to the imagination and aspirations of the individual: suspended time. We might envisage this time as being the negative, or positive, reflection of measured time - a kind of complementary time that aspires to being devoid of substantive content. This is the same time as that which every observer measures in his or her own reference framework, also known as “your own time” - a fixed time that cannot vary however fast we go. In other words, “your own time” is an invariable, the only true temporal invariable.

The development of systems that allow us to seize the present, to freeze it and to store it has never ceased to evolve since the invention of photography, which even today I still consider to be one of the most effective of all techniques for preserving and passing on memories. In other words, the ratio between the quality of information discovered and the time needed to acquire that information, which is naturally calculated as a form of speed, has never stopped growing.

Thus, speed in moving information: while even the fastest carrier seemed to produce no impression of simultaneity at all, even between places relatively close to one another, until not so long ago, technology today carries sounds, images and texts all together at the speed of luminous impulses, pushing the concept of “local” into a planet wide dimension where universal time, often called real time, now holds sway over.

la velocità possiamo fissare ed apprendere la lentezza e solo rendendoci conto dell’esiguità temporale possiamo metterci nelle condizioni di superarla.

Il tempo dello svago, quello chiamato tempo libero, è il tempo non misurato, lasciato alla fantasia e ai desideri del singolo: il tempo della sospensione. Tale tempo potrebbe essere considerato come il negativo, o il positivo, del tempo misurato: un tempo complementare, che vorrebbe essere svuotato di contenuti. Questo è lo stesso tempo che ciascun osservatore misura nel proprio sistema di riferimento che è anche chiamato tempo proprio: un tempo fisso che non può variare, per quanto velocemente si possa andare. Il tempo proprio è insomma un’invariante, l’unica vera invariante temporale.

Dopo l’invenzione della fotografia, a mio parere ancora oggi tra le più efficaci di tutte le tecniche che permettono il tramandare della memoria, l’evoluzione dei sistemi che consentono di cogliere il presente, di fissarlo e di archiviarlo, non ha mai cessato di evolvere. In altre parole, il rapporto tra la qualità dell’informazione reperita e il tempo necessario ad ottenerla, che evidentemente viene calcolato come una velocità, non ha mai smesso di aumentare.

Velocità, dunque, del trasporto dell’informazione: mentre fino a poco tempo fa, il più rapido dei corrieri non sembrava produrre alcuna apparenza di simultaneità, anche tra luoghi relativamente poco lontani tra loro, oggi le tecnologie trasportano il suono, le immagini, i testi e tutto questo insieme alla velocità di impulsi luminosi dilatando il concetto di “locale” verso una scala planetaria dove ormai regna il tempo universale che spesso viene definito come tempo reale.

Velocità, divario temporale, nuove simultaneità. L’essere contemporaneo è influenzato da tutto ciò, ma credo solo in superficie in quanto la 15

enced by all of that, but only on the surface, I think, because the peculiarity proper to time remains unchanged, untouchable. That which occurs in the universe appears to head in a given direction, from the past toward the future. The “arrow of time”, a concept used in physics to define physical processes in time, always travels in one direction alone, from the past toward the future. Unlike space, time is irreversible. The Second Principle of Thermodynamics states that entropy, in other words the degree of disorder present in a system subject to change of any kind, can only increase over time. Complex phenomena, especially those that characterize living beings, are also irreversible. Even though it is mortal, a butterfly will never be able to become a larva again.

Mozambique

Traveling in Mozambique - and indeed in many other, similar countries allows the traveler to travel in time. Particularly in remote areas, time seems to be experienced solely in its circular form; linear, open time, is barely experienced.

Thus the days simply fold in on one another without any linear perspective. Nothing ever seems to happen.

I often noticed the astonished, questioning look on the faces of children struck dumb when I asked them: what would you like to do when you grow up? It dawned on me only gradually that they had no idea what “growing up” meant because they were totally devoid of any sense of future time.

The games and the environments that the country’s numerous children create while at play acted as a kind of mirror: through their games I often saw my own self as a child again, playing imaginative games devised and implemented with very little, and in the company of groups of children in the courtyard or out in the street.

It was almost dark when I met a group of children on the beach, playing with a huge bed made of wood and rope. They were having enormous fun passing the huge object among themselves, from one head to the next.

On the spur of the moment I thought nothing of it, simply allowing myself to be enraptured by the way they lived their lives. It was only later, when I looked at the contact prints, that I was prompted to reflect differently on the perception of time (in the sense of time experienced) that that country inevitably causes me to perceive. In my most recent research I have realized that I use photography to “assemble” my thoughts in an effort to describe the different ways in which time is experienced in countries at different stages of development.

La “freccia del tempo”, concetto usato in fisica per definire i processi fisici rispetto al tempo, viaggia sempre in una sola direzione. A differenza dello spazio, il tempo è irreversibile. Il Secondo Principio della Termodinamica stabilisce che l’entropia, vale a dire il grado di disordine presente all’interno di un sistema sottoposto ad una qualunque trasformazione, non può che crescere nel tempo. I fenomeni complessi, in particolare quelli che caratterizzano gli esseri viventi, sono anch’essi irreversibili: anche se mortale, una farfalla non potrà mai ridiventare larva.

Mozambico

Percorrere il Mozambico, come molti altri Paesi simili, permette di compiere un viaggio nel tempo. Soprattutto in territori remoti, sembra che il tempo sia vissuto solo nella sua forma circolare; il tempo lineare ed aperto sembra essere vissuto molto poco Così le giornate si ripiegano solo su loro stesse senza mai avere una prospettiva lineare. Nulla sembra accadere.

Molto spesso mi sono accorta dello sguardo attonito ed interrogativo di un bambino, muto, di fronte alla mia domanda: cosa ti piacerebbe fare da grande? Solo in seguito ho capito che lui non sapeva cosa significasse “da grande”, ho capito che non possedeva una prospettiva.

I giochi e le atmosfere che i molti bambini creano intorno a loro hanno agito come riflesso: molto spesso le loro attività mi hanno fatto rivedere bambina alle prese con giochi fantastici, inventati e praticati con nulla ed insieme a bande di ragazzini nei cortili, fuori, per la strada.

Era quasi buio quando ho incontrato sulla spiaggia un gruppo di bambini, che giocavano con un enorme letto fatto di legno e corda. Si divertivano in maniera smisurata a passarsi quell’enorme oggetto da una testa all’altra. In quel momento non ho pensato a nulla. Ero solo affascinata dal loro modo di stare al mondo. Solo in seguito, quando ho visto i provini di stampa, sono stata colta da una diversa riflessione sulla percezione del tempo, in quanto tempo vissuto, che quel Paese inevitabilmente mi fa percepire. Nella mia ultima ricerca, mi accorgo che uso la fotografia cercando di “unire” i miei pensieri per trasmettere il modo in cui il tempo è vissuto in Paesi con sviluppi diversi.

Maputo, Mafalala, 2007 The spontaneous and provocative dances that take place totally naturally on the Maputo sea front fromThursday evening on, prompted me to explore the bars of Mafalala, one of the city’s high-risk neighbourhoods.

The rhythm of the music in the bars is absolutely deafening, and swaying bodies attract each other with the same mysterious force that governs the laws of gravity: shared physical desire that is consumed with complete normality in these places.These contacts, which to my eyes looked so all-enveloping, are experienced with indifference here. Once the music is over the bodies separate, only to be attracted by others at the next dance.

Maputo, Mafalala, 2007 I balli spontanei e provocanti, che fin dal giovedì sera si formano in modo del tutto naturale sul lungomare di Maputo, mi hanno spinto ad entrare nei bar di Mafalala, uno dei quartieri a rischio della città. In quei bar il ritmo della musica è assordante e i corpi si attraggono con la stessa forza che segue il misterioso principio della legge gravitazionale: un desiderio condiviso che in quei luoghi si consuma con assoluta normalità. Quei contatti, ai miei occhi così avvolgenti, sono vissuti nell’indifferenza: finita la musica quei corpi si separano per essere poi attratti da altri.

Ilha de Mozambique, Stone City, 2009 Even though the whole island has been on the UNESCOWorld Heritage list since 1991, it is in a state of total yet mesmerizing dereliction today.The island has never been restored. Ilha was the capital of the Portuguese colony from 1498 to 1898.The northern part of the Island, with the buildings erected by the Portuguese, is fortified - it is known as the “stone city” - and virtually uninhabited.

The southern part, where almost all of the Makua population (one of the country’s 11 ethnic minorities) lives, is known as the “living city”.

Ilha de Mozambique, Città di Pietra, 2009 Sebbene già dal 1991 l’intera isola appartenga alla lista UNESCO del Patrimonio dell’Umanità, oggi si presenta in uno stato di affascinante degrado. L’isola non è mai stata restaurata. Dal 1498 al 1898 Ilha è stata la capitale della colonia portoghese. La parte nord dell’isola, dove sono presenti gli edifici costruiti dai portoghesi, è fortificata, viene chiamata la “città di pietra” ed è quasi disabitata. La parte sud è detta la “città vivente”.

Qui vive la quasi totalità della popolazione makua, una delle 11 minoranze etniche presenti nel Paese.

On Some Constants: Grids, Roots, Relationships Silvana Turzio

Grid

This is a book that forges links between pictures, which in turn, forge links between the history of a place and the story of its inhabitants. In the first photograph, four or five old people are relaxing in front of a wall of woven straw mats, an extremely photogenic wall because its effect is that of a piece of embroidery while its function is that of a grid marking out and defining space while letting air and light through. Letting air through is crucial in tropical countries: it eliminates damp and cures disease, so they say. In this case it acts as a gauzy backdrop that allows light through, hinting at another space on the other side where we can let our imagination run riot, wondering what kind of a space it may be, but it is the physical grate that catches our eye, that keeps us glued to the photograph while prompting us to look beyond, like any semi-transparent screen whose dual nature is both to hold things back and to let them through. The thing that stands out in this photograph is a tangle that is important for the photographic material itself. In another photograph it is the composite design generated by the streaks in a girl’s hair that predominates: strips sculpted on her head that capture our eye, holding it before it can slip away to the sides to seize the mirrored smiles of two young girls. This extremely painterly picture is reminiscent of the physiognomical triptych in Western portrait painting. Today one would call it tactile photography. A few pictures later, we come across a metal fence that is protecting a pile of objects but also imprisoning a young boy. The boy, however, is at the back where there is a small opening in the metal fence. The photograph emits a feeling of imprisonment and freedom at the same time. Here are some pictures dominated by the material weave of the grid conferring weight and substance to the transparent diaphragm of the photograph’s surface, shifting from one picture to the next, slithering like a word in a play that can be whis56

Griglia

Questo è un libro che tesse relazioni tra immagini che a loro volta tessono relazioni tra la storia dei luoghi e quella delle persone che li abitano. Nella prima fotografia quattro o cinque vecchi si riposano davanti a una parete composta da stuoie di paglia intrecciata. Parete fotogenica quanto mai perchè l’effetto è di ricamo mentre la funzione è di griglia che delimita e definisce lo spazio, pur lasciando passare aria e luce. Il passaggio dell’aria è fondamentale nei paesi tropicali: toglie l’umidità, guarisce dalle malattie, si dice. Qui è un fondale diafano che lascia trapassare la luce ed indovinare un altro spazio sul quale possiamo fantasticare interrogandoci sulla sua natura, ma è la griglia materica che ci attrae, ci trattiene, spingendoci tuttavia oltre, come ogni schermo semitrasparente che risponde ad una doppia natura: trattenere e lasciar passare. In questa immagine si nota soprattutto una tessitura importante per la materia fotografica stessa. In un’altra fotografia, prevale il disegno composto dalla striatura dei capelli della ragazza. Strisce scolpite sulla testa che catturano l’occhio, fermandolo prima che possa scivolare ai lati per cogliere i sorrisi speculari delle due ragazzine. Immagine fortemente pittorica che ricorda il trittico fisiognomico della ritrattistica occidentale. Oggi si direbbe una fotografia tattile. Qualche immagine dopo, c’imbattiamo nella rete metallica che protegge un affastellarsi di oggetti ma che imprigiona un ragazzino. Il ragazzo però se ne sta in fondo dove nella griglia di ferro è stato aperto uno spiraglio. La fotografia emana una sensazione di prigionia e di libertà nello stesso tempo. Ecco alcune immagini qui presenti dove la tessitura materica della griglia la fa da padrone: conferisce spessore al diaframma trasparente della superficie fotografica, passa da un’immagine all’altra, scivola come una parola teatrale che può essere sussurrata, sputata, limata tra i denti, urlata, cantata, negata. È una bella materia diafana, questa griglia che ci fa vedere attraverso di essa per andare verso il fondo dell’immagine, o che al 57

pered, spat, filed between one’s teeth, shouted, sung or denied. This grid is a beautifully diaphanous veil that allows us to see through it, probing right into the depths of the picture or, on the contrary, getting in the way of our gaze as it seeks to penetrate beyond, but can only do so through the semi-transparent screen. The screen-cum-grid is remarkable for its regular weave, straw is an embroidery that captures the eye, the boundary fence is a rhythmic succession of rhomboid shapes, and hair is a parallel path on a plowed field, but the corrugated iron that prevents us from looking any further screams out anguished amazement at the poverty of the area. The grid is ambiguous, it speaks out yet is silent, discreet and recurrent; it is a constant feature of Bonanzinga’s work.

Roots

This is a book spawned by a reflection on the rhizome that burrows underground from one place to another, bringing fresh sap to the cycle of life like the Marrabenta, the country’s most popular form of music based on the rhythmic beating of several percussions on different drums. Ancient and ritualistic, revived by young contemporary musicians, it is today a tool for social criticism, an ancestral narrative in song, that always accompanies the major moments in the cycle of life: weddings, births, deaths and feasts. This is what we see in the tree trunks growing in symbiosis with the crumbling plaster walls, the roots racing between heaven and earth, the woven patterns of foliage acting as a backdrop to the night, the severed umbilical cord of a baby elephant set against a dark backdrop like the Pompeian mummies in Giorgio Sommer’s 19th century photographs: the cycle of life is symbolized by the pervasiveness of the roots that mark this work. The tight rhythms of the cycle of life echo through the roots, once again, underscoring the relationship theme. The two things, the cycle of life and the search for one’s roots, are related to one another, especially in a country like Mozambique that is undergoing extremely rapid transformation. In the “Poétique de la Relation”, Edouard Glissant perspicaciously points out that the issue of roots is particularly multifaceted and contradictory in composite cultures: the manner in which it is addressed can have a major influence on its effect. While the search for autochthonous roots is a basic theme in their culture, it is also true that composite cultures have to deal with a tangle, be it subterranean or otherwise, which is almost impossible to unravel. In countries that feed on composite cultures, the issue of roots is experienced only with difficulty.

Yet everyone, once they have become aware of their diversity, can turn that complexity into an experience and translate it into varied relationships. It is a delicate, extremely vibrant and necessary transformational experience.

In this book the presence of exposed roots, of weaves embroidering walls, of twisted umbilical cords and severed roots is a strong, measured and significant presence: sundering and joining, appropriation and destruction, vital sap and the violent interruption of feeding. A life which flows powerfully in the sap, and which embraces and suffocates, showing no fear, but which also holds up the architecture of walls, roots running, rising, binding, connecting. This is where we can hear the rhythmic percussion that accompanies collective and individual life; this is how the root becomes a form of punctuation running through the narrative, modulating it to the rhythm of life and death, of abandonment and encounter, of destructive identity and of a strength rooted in the past.

Lo schermogriglia si fa notare per la sua trama regolare, la paglia è un ricamo che cattura lo sguardo, la rete di delimitazione è un ritmo di forme romboidi, la capigliatura è un percorso parallelo di solchi, ma la latta ondulata che chiude lo sguardo dice invece a voce alta lo stupore addolorato di fronte alla miseria del luogo. La griglia è ambigua, dice e tace, discreta e ricorrente; è una costante del lavoro di Bonanzinga.

Radici

Questo è un libro che nasce da una riflessione sul rizoma che si spinge sottoterra da un luogo all’altro e dà linfa al ciclo della vita. Simile è la marrabenta, la musica più diffusa nel paese che si basa sul battito ritmico di più percussioni su tamburi diversi. Antica e rituale, ripresa dai giovani musicisti contemporanei, è oggi strumento di denuncia sociale, atavico racconto cantato, che accompagna da sempre i momenti forti del ciclo della vita: i matrimoni, le nascite, le morti e le feste. Così sono i tronchi degli alberi che crescono abbracciati ai muri di calce friabile, le radici che corrono tra cielo e terra, gli intrecci di fronde che fanno da fondale alla notte, il cordone reciso dell’elefantino adagiato sul fondo scuro come le mummie pompeiane nelle fotografie ottocentesche di Giorgio Sommer: il ciclo della vita è simbolizzato dalla pervasività delle radici che segna questo lavoro. I ritmi serrati del ciclo della vita risuonano per il tramite delle radici sottolineando ancora una volta il tema della relazione. Le due cose sono correlate, il ciclo della vita e la ricerca delle proprie radici, soprattutto in un paese come il Mozambico che sta vivendo una trasformazione 59

Relationships

This is a book that tells the story of the things closest to author Patrizia Bonanzinga’s heart. Every event brings us face to face with the clear and urgent need to experience diversity and to integrate it into our way of envisioning the world. Today, as we try to analyze and understand the complexity of the contemporary world, this kind of thinking takes on a new life: here it is clearly visible. Photography is one of the most effective tools for describing the infinite moments of this story, because it records everything impartially, and because it is still capable of illustrating the complexity of our reality: in this sense Bonanzinga’s photography moves without hesitation. Relationships between people, or relationships between those people and the land in which they live and die, are the most precious of lymph for her photographic project. And her dwelling on human relationships is born also of a very specific desire to highlight the difference in the way time is experienced in cultures so distant from one another as the European culture and the culture of Mozambique. Photography, the means chosen to achieve this, makes it very difficult to describe that intention, yet the dominant feature in this work is the presence of people, of men, women, old folk and children who seem to abandon themselves to experiencing time in a manner that is poorly structured in social terms and perceived on a subjective plane. Her most emblematic photograph is almost in the middle of the book, and this is no coincidence. Two young people are dancing, intent on the contact between their bodies, isolated in their desire, twisted by the rhythm of Eros, sparkling with mutual attraction, echoing with the inner beat vibrating on their taut skin.

The two young people are dancing, entwined with one another the way tree trunks mould their shape as they slide down the wall of a house, wrapped up in the beat of the drum and, in an immensely vibrant contrast, acting as a perfect tonal foil to the severed umbilical cord of the motionless baby elephant. One cord of love winds up as another dries out.This is followed by a picture imbued with grief-stricken respect for a child who has lost all weight and substance, lying prone on a patterned sheet, one mark among many others. It is a barely compassionate picture, as though, in the words of Susan Sontag, “the pain of others” calls for respect rather than loud tears of grief. The cycle of life then turns into a narrative alternation, almost as though the author wished to underscore her thought regarding a way of experiencing time, which she feels is specific to these countries.

Reportage

This is a book of reporting in the most traditionally concerned sense. It involves time and devotion, absolute questions and partial answers, a sense of ethics and political thought. For a start, the photographer has to genuinely ask herself what distance she needs to adopt in order to recount death and suffering without sliding into the extreme of obscenity, and she also needs to ask herself how she can take photographs without smugly plumping for an excessively formal composition. It is a difficult, or well-nigh impossible, balance to maintain without resorting to lengthy photographic sessions and without having a deep understanding of the situation. This work is a successful example of the complexity of the photographer’s position when faced with extreme situations - pain, suffering, poverty, aggression, abandonment: the list is endless. Some of the photographs bear unmistakable witness to this. A wall interrupted by a gap, 60

Edouard Glissant in Poetica della relazione sostiene acutamente che la questione delle radici è assai articolata e contraddittoria nelle culture composite: il modo con il quale viene affrontata può cambiare profondamente l’effetto. Se da un lato la ricerca di radici autoctone è un tema fondante della loro cultura, dall’altro è pur vero che le culture composite hanno a che fare con un intreccio, sotterraneo o esposto che sia, quasi inestricabile. Nei paesi che si nutrono di culture composite la questione delle radici viene infatti esperita con difficoltà.Tutti, quando consapevoli della loro diversità, possono tuttavia fare esperienza di questa complessità e tradurla in relazioni variegate. Si tratta di un’esperienza di trasformazione, delicata, vivissima, necessaria.

In questo libro la presenza di radici esposte, di intrecci che ricamano i muri, di cordoni ombelicali torti come radici recise è presenza forte, ritmata e significativa: recisione e unione, appropriazione e distruzione, linfa vitale e interruzione violenta del nutrimento. Vita che scorre potente nella linfa e che, senza temere alcunché, abbraccia e soffoca, ma anche sostiene l’architettura murale, radici che corrono, salgono, legano, connettono. È qui che si ode la ritmica percussione che scandisce la vita collettiva ed individuale, è in questo modo che la radice diventa una punteggiatura che unisce il racconto modulandolo sul ritmo di vita e morte, di abbandono e d’incontro, di identità distruttiva e di forza radicata nel passato.

Relazioni

Questo è un libro che racconta ciò che più preme all’autrice, Patrizia Bonanzinga. Ogni evento ci pone di fronte all’evidente e improcrastinabile necessità di fare esperienza della diversità integrandola nel nostro modo di pensare il mondo. Oggi, quando si cerca di analizzare e capire la complessità del mondo contemporaneo, questo tipo di pensiero si fa vivo: qui è chiaramente leggibile. La fotografia è uno degli strumenti più incisivi per scrivere gli infiniti momenti di questa storia perchè registra ecumenicamente tutto e perchè sa ancora raccontare la complessità della realtà: in questo senso il lavoro fotografico di Bonanzinga si muove senza tentennamenti. Le relazioni tra le persone, tra queste e il territorio nel quale vivono e muoiono sono la linfa più preziosa per il suo progetto fotografico. E questo soffermarsi sulle relazioni umane nasce anche da una volontà molto precisa: il sottolineare la diversità del vissuto temporale in culture così lontane tra loro, come lo sono l’europea e la mozambicana. Il mezzo usato, la fotografia, rende ben arduo descrivere questo intento. E tuttavia, prevale in questo lavoro la presenza di persone, uomini, donne, vecchi e bambini che sembrano abbandonarsi ad una temporalità socialmente poco strutturata ma al contrario percepita su un piano soggettivo. La sua fotografia più emblematica sta, non a caso, quasi nel centro del libro. Due ragazzi ballano, intenti al contatto dei loro corpi, isolati nel loro desiderio, torti dal ritmo dell’eros, sfavillanti di attrazione reciproca, risonanti di battiti interiori che vibrano sulla loro pelle tesa. I due giovani danzano avvolti su loro stessi come i tronchi si adattano scivolando lungo il muro della casa, avviluppati al ritmo del tamburo e fanno da contraltare tonale, in una contrapposizione vitalissima, al cordone reciso dell’elefantino immobile. Un cordone d’amore si va avviluppando, un cordone d’amore si va prosciugando. Segue un’immagine di rispetto doloroso di fronte al bimbo ormai senza peso e senza spessore, steso sul lenzuolo disegnato, segno tra segni. È un’immagine appena compassionevole, come se “il dolore degli altri” per citare le parole di Susan Sontag, dovesse essere rispettato e non urlato. Il ciclo 61

almost a keyhole, through which we see the heads of men wearing their prayer caps and all facing in the same direction, offers a far more eloquent image than any wordy description of the socio-religious situation.

This book juxtaposes the poetic with the epic, the tale with the opinion, sentiments with anthropological analysis. One wonders how long the author must have spent observing these situations, how many of them she experienced without taking a single photograph while waiting for the right light, the right moment, or how often she must have seen the tree with its Magritte-like foliage before photographing it at night. Was she consciously thinking of the famous Magritte painting? Perhaps. Or perhaps the painting was hovering in some remote corner of her memory and resurfaced in a flash that night and with that particular light. It reactivated for a split second in the feeble light of some anonymous city in Mozambique, only to return a moment later to the wall of the Magritte Museum in Belgium. Now it has taken on a new life like a delicate outline on these pages, binding itself to other photographs that open up breaches for faces and bodies, beaches and homes that may be distant in geographical terms but that are so close to our sensibility.

We can perceive moments of sensitivity and moments of intensity, we can see the result of careful listening and respectful intimacy with the events being played out, we can hears noises, sounds and voices opening the door to an extremely rich world of vision, we can see situations prompting us to engage in broader reflection. We simply have to take the time to look carefully in order to grasp the measure and the sense of the work.

Reportage

Questo è un libro di reportage nella sua tradizione più impegnata. Implica tempo e dedizione, domande assolute e risposte parziali, senso etico e pensiero politico. Per cominciare, occorre che il fotografo si ponga davvero la domanda su quale sia la giusta distanza per raccontare la morte o la sofferenza senza scivolare nell’estremità dell’osceno, e che si ponga anche la domanda su come si possa fotografare senza compiacersi di una composizione troppo formale. È un equilibrio difficile, quasi impossibile da mantenere se non a costo di lunghe riprese e di profonda comprensione della situazione. Della complessità della posizione del fotografo di fronte alle situazioni estreme - dolore, sofferenza, povertà, aggressione, abbandono; la lista è infinita - questo lavoro è un esempio ben riuscito. Ne sono un segno inequivocabile alcune riprese. Il muro interrotto da un pertugio, quasi un buco di serratura, al di là del quale, teste maschili che indossano il berretto da preghiera sono rivolte nella stessa direzione, costruisce un’immagine molto più loquace di una lunga descrizione della situazione socio-religiosa. In questo libro vengono modulati elementi poetici ed epici, racconti ed opinioni e sentimenti e analisi antropologiche. Viene da chiedersi quanto tempo deve aver passato l’autrice nel guardare queste situazioni, quante ne ha vissute senza scattare perchè era in attesa della luce e del momento giusti, quante volte deve aver visto l’albero dalle fronde quasi magrittiane prima di fotografarlo di notte. Era memore del famoso quadro di Magritte? Forse. O forse quel quadro aleggiava in un punto remoto della memoria e si è manifestato in un lampo, quella notte e con quella particolare luce: si è riattivato per un istante alla luce flebile di una città qualsiasi del Mozambico per tornare subito dopo sui muri del museo Magritte in Belgio. Ora rivive come una traccia leggera su queste pagine per legarsi alle altre fotografie che aprono varchi a volti e corpi, a spiagge e a case lontane nello spazio e vicine nella nostra sensibilità.

Si percepiscono momenti delicati e momenti intensi, vi si legge l’effetto di un attento ascolto e di una rispettosa intimità con ciò che andava accadendo, si ascoltano rumori, suoni e voci che aprono ad un mondo della visione assai ricco, si vedono situazioni che portano a riflessioni più ampie. Occorre solo prendere il tempo di guardare con attenzione per cogliere la misura e il senso del lavoro.

Maputo, Infantario Premiero de Mayo, 2007 Some 16% of the population of Mozambique is HIV positive.The average age of the population is around 20, while the figure for life expectancy is well below 50.

I visited the Infantario where even newborn babies are taken in, alone. A newborn baby, a baby without a family, is no one. I attempted to use my camera to dialogue with this world, a victim of its own powerlessness, where the sole purpose of the children’s lives appears to be to forget. I often felt halation forming around my camera, gloomily echoing a thin mist.

Maputo, Infantario Premiero de Mayo, 2007 Il 16% della popolazione mozambicana è sieropositiva al virus HIV. L’età media della popolazione si attesta intorno ai venti anni, la speranza di vita ben al di sotto dei 50 anni.

Sono entrata nell’Infantario dove arrivano anche neonati, soli. Un neonato, un bambino senza famiglia, non è nessuno. Ho cercato con la macchina fotografica di dialogare con quel mondo, vittima della propria impotenza, dove i bambini sembrano vivere solo per dimenticare. Spesso sentivo che si formava un alone intorno alla mia macchina, una specie di malinconia simile ad una nebbia sottile.

Children are indoctrinated very strictly, using techniques that have gone into abeyance in our own societies.They spend most of their time learning the same concepts by heart. “OurWorld’s” children spend a great deal of time on their own in the company of a variety of electronic devices: new teaching trends suggest that it is going to be important in the future to stimulate creativity more and the memory less.The most important factor will be time: more time for one activity will mean less time for another.What will the priority be in each person’s use of time?

La maggior parte del tempo dedicato all’apprendimento è spesa ad imparare a memoria gli stessi concetti. I figli del “Nostro Mondo” passano molto tempo, soli, in compagnia di diversi dispositivi elettronici: secondo le nuove tendenze didattiche nel futuro sarà più importante stimolare la creatività e meno la memoria. Maputo, Mavalala, 2009 Typical corrugated iron and asbestos hut erected spontaneously in one of the city’s high-risk neighbourhoods. Buildings like this one are erected with a great deal of imagination: using pieces of automobile bodywork, corrugated iron, asbestos, cardboard and plastic.Whole neighbourhoods are built without a single brick or a single piece of glass. Statistics show that Mozambique is one of the most “efficient” of the 47 countries that make up sub-Saharan Africa. It has enjoyed a growth rate of over 10% since the nineties. Some 50% of the country’s GDP comes from international aid.The results of international aid in 2003 produced a per capita GDP of 23.9%.

Maputo, Hulene, 2007 The inside of a dwelling in the neighbourhood of Hulene: one of the most extensive high-risk neighbourhoods in the city. Does aid really serve a useful purpose?The debate has tended to polarize in recent years.

Governments in industrially advanced countries have promised aid, part of which they have doled out and part of which still exists only on paper. African countries have vowed to make better use of the aid: they have done so in part, but by no means in full. In the meantime, China has brought fresh money and new people to Africa in return for raw materials and energy. Unlike theWest, China does not hand out aid, it makes direct investments; nor does it peg aid to political progress, it works on the basis of pure economic advantage.The impact of China has pulled the carpet out from under the feet of theWest’s aid policy.The time for conventional aid almost seems to have run out.

Il dibattito degli ultimi anni ha visto una forte contrapposizione. I governi dei paesi avanzati hanno promesso più aiuti. In parte li hanno dati, in parte sono rimasti sulla carta.

I governi dei paesi africani hanno promesso che li avrebbe usati meglio: in parte è successo, in parte no. E intanto, la Cina ha portato in Africa nuovi soldi e nuova gente. In cambio di materie prime ed energie.

A differenza dell’Occidente, la Cina non dà aiuti, ma investe direttamente; non condiziona gli aiuti a progressi politici ma opera sulla base di pure convenienze economiche.

L’effetto Cina ha spiazzato la politica di aiuto occidentale. Il tempo degli aiuti tradizionali sembra quasi scaduto.

Maputo, 2009 In the first light of dawn, the low tide gives way before the rising tide. Silence is complete, calm is absolute. I allow myself to be gently cradled by the serenity that envelops me. I try to perceive the slow passage of that time, thinking of the many impassioned and conflicting political, economic and social discussions that get all entangled with one another over the future of Africa which some, at this juncture, call the Gray Continent rather than the Black Continent - while it seems to me that Africa herself is still shrouded in her centuries-old secret: the secret forged by the time of her centuriesold tradition.

Maputo, 2009 Alle prime luci del giorno la bassa marea lascia il posto all’alta marea. Il silenzio è totale e la calma assoluta. Mi lascio cullare dalla serenità che mi avvolge. Cerco di cogliere il lento scorrere di quel tempo, penso alle tante discussioni politico/economiche/sociali che si intrecciano appassionate e contraddittorie sul futuro dell’Africa, che alcuni definiscono ormai Continente Grigio e non più Nero. Mentre Lei, l’Africa, mi sembra rimanere avvolta nel suo millenario segreto: quello creato dal tempo della sua millenaria tradizione.

As I neared the end of this project, I happened to be reading Ryszard Kapuscinski’s “The Shadow of the Sun” I would like to quote here an excerpt from that fascinating book.

I don’t think that I could have found a more apposite conclusion anywhere.

The European and the African have an entirely different concept of time.

In the European worldview, time exists outside man, exists objectively, and has measurable and linear characteristics. According to Newton, time is absolute: “Absolute, true, mathematical time of itself and from its own nature, it flows equably and without relation to anything external”.

The European feels himself to be time’s slave, dependent on it, subject to it.To exist and function, he must observe its ironclad and inviolate laws, its inflexible principles and rules. He must heed deadlines, dates, days and hours. He moves within the rigors of time and cannot exist outside them.

They impose upon him their requirements and quotas. An unresolvable conflict exists between man and time, one that always ends with man’s defeat - time annihilates him.

Africans apprehend time differently. For them it is a much looser concept, more open, elastic, and subjective. It is man who influences time, its shape, course, and rhythm (man acting, of course, with the consent of gods and ancestors).Time is even something that man can create outright, for time is made manifest through events, and whether an event takes place or not depends, after all, on man alone. If two armies do not engage in a battle, then that battle will not occur (in other words, time will not have revealed its presence, will not have come into being).Time appears as a result of our actions. It is something that springs to life under our influence, but falls into a state of hibernation, even non-existence, if we do not direct our energy toward it. It is a subservient, passive essence, and, most importantly, one dependent on man.

Dopo aver quasi concluso questo progetto, mi sono ritrovata a leggere “Ebano” di Ryszard Kapuscinski.

Trascrivo un estratto da quel libro affascinante.

Non avrei potuto trovare conclusione migliore.

L’europeo e l’africano hanno un’idea del tempo completamente diversa, lo concepiscono e vi si rapportano in modo opposto.

Nel concetto europeo il tempo esiste obiettivamente, indipendentemente dall’uomo, al di fuori di esso, ed è dotato di qualità misurabili e lineari.

Secondo Newton il tempo è assoluto: “il tempo assoluto, vero, matematico scorre in sé e per sé in virtù della sua stessa natura, uniformemente e senza dipendere da alcun fattore esterno”. L’europeo si sente schiavo del tempo, ne è condizionato, è il suo suddito in tutto e per tutto. Per esistere e funzionare deve osservare le sue ferree e inamovibili leggi, i suoi rigidi principi e le sue regole. Deve rispettare date, scadenze, giorni e orari. Ne subisce i rigori, le esigenze e le norme. Tra l’uomo e il tempo esiste un conflitto insolubile che si conclude inevitabilmente con la sconfitta dell’uomo: il tempo annienta l’uomo.

Gli africani autoctoni, invece, intendono il tempo in modo completamente opposto. Per loro si tratta di una categoria molto più flessibile, aperta, elastica, soggettiva. È l’uomo (un uomo beninteso che agisca conformemente al volere degli antenati e degli dèi) che influisce sulla forma del tempo, sul suo corso e ritmo. Il tempo è addirittura qualcosa che l’uomo può creare: infatti, l’esistenza del tempo si manifesta attraverso gli eventi, e che un evento abbia luogo oppure no dipende dall’uomo. Se due eserciti non si danno battaglia, la battaglia non avrà luogo (ossia il tempo non manifesterà la sua esistenza, non esisterà). Il tempo si manifesta per effetto del nostro agire: se cessiamo la nostra azione o addirittura non l’intraprendiamo, esso sparisce. È come una materia sempre pronta a rinascere sotto il nostro influsso ma che, se non le trasmettiamo energia, cade in uno stato di ibernazione o addirittura di non essere. Il tempo è un’entità inerte, passiva e soprattutto condizionata dall’uomo.

“We have to go faster”: we have to go faster, Mozambique premier Aires Bonifacio Alì remarked in a single breath a few months ago. Faster: perhaps circular time, the time in which one day follows on from the other and they are all alike, is about to run out. And perhaps one of those poor countries on the African continent is now entering linear time, our kind of time, at its own speed.

“We have to go faster”: dobbiamo muoverci più in fretta, ha constatato in un soffio, alcuni mesi fa, Aires Bonifacio Alì, primo ministro del Mozambico.

Più in fretta: può darsi che il tempo circolare, il tempo in cui una giornata si ripiega sull’altra sempre uguale, stia per scadere. E che uno dei paesi più poveri del continente africano stia entrando a sua volta nel tempo lineare: il nostro, con la sua velocità.
