THIRD TEXAS GENERAL EXHIBITION The Texas General Exhibitions were conceived almost three years ago by the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, the Witte Memorial Museum of San Antonio, and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts as a means of selecting the outstanding work of Texas artists for the year, and of providing definite and tangible cooperation between the three museums concerned.

The first Texas General was organized at Houston in the spring of 1940 and proved to be immediately successful. The second show was organized in Dallas last spring, carried on this auspicious beginning, and was further distinguished by the inclusion of Oklahoma and the cooperation of the Philbrook Museum of Tulsa.

This year, at the request of the State Fair of Texas, and upon receiving many expressions from the artists themselves, it was decided to move the date of the third and subsequent Texas General Exhibitions to the fall, coincident with the State Fair in Dallas. This, of course, places the responsibility of organization of the exhibition each year upon the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. Much as we regret the disadvantages involved, including the democratic procedure of rotation of responsibility and the opportunity of the various cities to see the show first, it was felt that the advantages outweighed the faults . The State Fair is Texas' own fair, it wants a Texas artists' exhibition, and, practically, it relieves the museums of the rather considerable expense of organizing the show. It makes possible a competent out-of-state jury, and insures the standard thereby.

This year's exhibition is one of the best. It is well-rounded, representative, and contains many superlative things. Five hundred and forty-six en tires were submitted to the jury which consisted of Mr. Boardman Robinson, of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Mrs. John McCrady, New Orleans artist, and Mr. E . ]. Whetzle, director of the Louisiana State Exhibits Building at Shreveport. One hundred and thirty-three objects were accepted, and are listed below. More than the usual amount of sculpture is included , while the oils, water-c olors, and prints have a number of distinguished examples. Eugene Trentham, Guggenheim winner and member of the staff of the University of Texas Art Department, was awarded the prize in oils for his fine "August Landscape." William Lester of Dallas was awarded the watercolor prize for his "Spring Ploughing," and the sculpture prize went to Miss lone Franklin of Commerce for her sensitive pink marble "Head." These prizes were raised by the three cooperating museums, the Museum of Fine Arts of Houston, the Witte Memorial Museum, and the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES The Educational Department of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts aims to teach the appreciation and understanding of art through the processes of creation, discussion, and instruction. Although it does not intend to operate a professional art school, it does hope to encourage and assist the serious student as well as those whose interest is more casual. Courses of intruction now offered are described below. It is hoped that more elaborate courses may be added as funds for their conduct become available.

Creative Classes for children of members are held every Saturday at 9:00 and at 10:30 in the morning. They are divided into three age groups, and offer actual creative work suitable to the abilities of the child. A similar class is held on Tuesdays at 3:30 P.M. for those children who are unable to come on Saturdays.

A Class in Painting is offered on Saturday afternoons, beginning at one o'clock. Pupils must be of high school age, and must be recommended by their own teachers to be eligible. The class is limited in number.

The Dabblers Classes are for those adult members of the Art Association who enjoy creative work and feel the need for more or less instruction and criticism. Like the children's classes, it aims not merely at creation, but the thorough understanding of works of art as well.

There is a class on Monday and one on Friday at ten in the morning.

The High School Art Council, the Junior High Group, and the Grade School Group are composed of talented boys and girls from the various schools and meet at the Museum on Wednesday afternoons.

Gallery tours, talks by members of the staff and practicing artists, and occasional social affairs lead these young people in the direction of increased understanding of works of art.

Camp Fire Groups and Girl Scout Groups pursue their studies for honors and badges appropriate to the arts in their organizations. with the help of members of the Museum staff.

Extension Lectures are given by members of the staff in the public school system, and by special arrangement, to clubs and church groups.
