2023 SANDI HADDOCK COMMUNITY IMPACT HONOREE

OPEN YOUR HEART FEATURED SURVIVOR

Each year, the Sandi Haddock Community Impact Honor is presented at the Dallas Go Red for Women luncheon to a leader who has made a significant impact on women’s health in our community. The American Heart Association is proud to recognize Barbara Smith as the 2023 Sandi Haddock Community Impact Honoree. Barbara is Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Metals Company, has served on local AHA Boards in Tampa and Dallas, and now serves as President of the Southwest Region Board of Directors for AHA. Through her years of leadership at Commercial Metals, Barbara has continually promoted the mission of the American Heart Association for the company’s employees and their families, demonstrating just one aspect of her unwavering care and attention to their wellbeing. For nearly 10 years, Commercial Metals Company has invested in the American Heart Association mission, many years as a Platform level sponsor. Barbara is a champion for women, serving as a mentor and shining example of servant leadership. As a volunteer leader for the American Heart Association, Barbara has not only generously given of her own time, resources, and energy, but she has encouraged other female leaders to serve. Her vision and advocacy have been truly transformational for the American Heart Association and has inspired many others to find their own path to mission impact.

Sheena Fannin, a mom of two, lived an active life, ate a balanced diet, and managed the stress and joy of raising two young boys alongside her husband, Michael, with poise. But when Michael was traveling for work one evening in 2020, Sheena, then 38, unexpectedly lost consciousness on her kitchen floor while the boys were sleeping upstairs. Now, after rigorous tests, a period in the hospital, implantation of a defibrillator, and ongoing medication, Sheena knows she was experiencing ventricular tachycardia. Sheena is not afraid to say she’s been through a lot, but the trauma did not stop with her physical state. Her mental health journey has played a vital role in her healing as well. Sheena is living proof that her story, could be our story. There is not one face of heart disease and education, awareness and research could save any of us.

2022 - 2023 CIRCLE OF RED MEMBERS

GO RED FOR WOMEN MANIFESTO

Circle of Red is a powerful, passionate group of individuals dedicated to making an impact in our community’s fight against heart disease. Members use their influence and resources to rally others to take charge of their heart health and impact AHA’s mission. Circle of Red members donate an annual personal gift of $5,000 or more to support the Go Red for Women movement and serve as ambassadors for the cause.

Throughout history, women have stepped up. Stepped out. Overcome opposition. Our passion made history… but our actual hearts, did not. Heart disease and stroke have never been just men’s diseases, but through the years, women have been left out of studies, left behind in care and careers, and forgotten… Stacy Nahas

Unaware. Underrepresented. Uncounted. Untreated. Now, we are fighting... Fighting for better representation in medical research. Fighting for equitable access to care and treatments. Fighting to spread lifesaving information to our sisters. Fighting to overcome the statistic that cardiovascular disease is the Number 1 killer of women, claiming the life of 1 in 3; more than all forms of cancer combined. We are inspiring change by… Ensuring all women are aware, helping women take charge of their health, closing gender gaps in research and STEM, addressing inequities in access and quality of care, and so much more. You can join the movement by speaking out, showing up, and advocating for our community. You have the power to change the outlook for women today and tomorrow. Her story is our story. We are in this together.

Today, we’re focusing on: We Will Champion Life-saving Discoveries for Women, by Women. RESEARCH: Women continue to be underrepresented — and underfunded — in both research and STEM fields. We’re addressing this through Research Goes Red, STEM Goes Red and efforts to increase funding and research on CVD in women.

We Will Stand Up for Moms. MATERNAL HEALTH: The U.S. has one of the worst maternal mortality rates among developed countries, and pregnancy-related deaths are on the rise. CVD is the culprit. Black women pay the highest price, followed by Native American, Asian and Hispanic women. We’re advocating for more equitable health care and determined to close the gaps in education, resources, and support that disadvantage so many women during pregnancy and beyond.
