As you walk across
the stage to collect your parchment, your connection to Dalhousie is not ending. In many ways, it has only just begun. Indeed, you are joining a special group of people who will go on to make their mark in the world. We have highlighted just three fellow alum throughout the pages that follow. Dalhousie alumni become people of influence, authority and community, who inspire others by their commitment to making the world a better place. And as you make your way – building your careers, family and social networks – know that there are thousands like you all over the world who hold that special bond to one of the East Coast’s finest institutions. We recognize that you worked hard to get to this very important stage in your life. Our commitment to you is one of continued support. We keep you informed about your alma mater and opportunities to volunteer and give back. We hold networking events throughout the world every year. And there are special cost-saving programs set up specifically for the benefit of our alumni. For nearly 200 years, Dalhousie alumni have been strengthening their communities, discovering new innovations and leading the public service. The class of 2014 will be no different. Get connected Alumni receptions – casual networking Dalhousie’s Department of External Relations hosts alumni receptions each year across North America, as well as several internationally, such as in England and Malaysia. Attending an alumni event is a chance to socialize and network with friends, former classmates and new acquaintances. With your up-to-date contact details, we’ll send you an invitation if you reside close to an event location. Visit alumni.dal.ca/events for upcoming events.
Faculty-hosted events – build your professional network Faculties hold a variety of networking, social and special events throughout the year. Staying connected with your professors and classmates is a valuable (and easy!) way to build and maintain professional relationships. Events may be held on campus, across Canada, and occasionally beyond. Donor Events – recognizing those who give to Dal Many alumni support Dalhousie financially either through the Dalhousie Fund or our planned giving and major gift programs. We say “thank you” each year through donor receptions, alumni events and personalized communications.
In 1879, George Munro saved Dal from financial ruin by donating the equivalent to $8 million in today’s currency. The spirit of philanthropy continues today as Dal just completed the largest fund-raising campaign in the university’s history – $280 million.

Homecoming & Reunions – come home to Dal Held in early fall, Dal Homecoming welcomes alumni back to reunite, connect with current campus life, and cheer on the Dal Tigers. There are lots of ways to show your Black & Gold spirit! We hope you’ll make it an annual tradition. Reunions are celebrated both in specific faculties and by the university. Keep the group connected – we can help when you’re ready to get the gang together! Social networking sites – connect online Find us on Facebook at facebook.com/ dalumni and on LinkedIn. We post alumni news and updates about Dal, invite you to events and share opportunities for you to make connections or get involved. Many of the faculties are connecting online as well! Chapters – engage with local alumni Engage with alumni living in your area through an alumni chapter. Led by committees of volunteers, chapters host events, connect the community and support volunteer opportunities. Alumni have formed chapters in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Cape Breton, New York, Nassau, Bermuda, Hong Kong and London, UK. The late Queen Mother received an honorary degree from Dal in 1967, while in Halifax officially opening the Sir Charles Tupper Medical Building. Other honorary degree recipients include Queen Elizabeth, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and Leonard Cohen.

Volunteer Volunteering with Dal alumni is rewarding and enjoyable. In collaboration with fellow alumni, students and other members of the Dal community, there are opportunities to educate and learn, plan and participate. If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities, please contact Bill Chernin at volunteer@dal.ca. Join the DAA Board of Directors A rewarding opportunity for alumni across the country, the DAA welcomes volunteers to participate on the board and a variety of committees. The DAA’s mission is to build relationships between the university and alumni, offering programs such as chapters, Homecoming and mentoring.
DAA Awards The DAA manages a series of awards that recognizes extraordinary alumni in the areas of volunteerism, contributions to society and outstanding accomplishments in career and community service. Nominations are open late fall through winter. Recipients are celebrated at the annual Alumni Dinner during Homecoming. The first Americian woman to walk in space was Dal grad Kathryn Sullivan (PhD’78, LLD’85). Two of Canada’s prime ministers were Dal grads and Dal alumni have filled 12 provincial Premier spots and eight Lieutenant Governor positions across Canada.
