area. My daughter, Sohaila Danesh, joined me over twenty years ago. We do both contemporary and what I would call “updated traditional” interiors. We also have access to a wide variety of special-order furniture, lighting, fabric and carpet lines, or we can design and fabricate completely customdesigned furniture to suit a client’s specific needs. We also have our own extensive fabric and wallpaper library, as well as great upholsterers and drapery workrooms.

Q. What do you want people to know about your showroom and retail store?

A. Arlene Lilie Interior Design combines the best of both worlds. In addition to our design business, someone looking to freshen or even completely update their space can come into our store and peruse our unique selection of modern furniture, exquisite antiques, fine art, crystal chandeliers, mirrors, contemporary and vintage lamps and unusual accessories. We even have a new line of children’s furniture inspired by classic mid-century designers like Charles Eames and Arne Jacobsen.

Interior designer Arlene Lilie creates chic and elegant interiors that are contemporary, yet classic.

I had the opportunity to talk at length with Arlene Lilie about the evolution of her successful interior design business and retail store, and what gives her business its unique personality.

Q. How long have you been in the Central West End? A. I bought this building with a business partner in 1992. We shared the space until she died two years ago. Since then, I’ve purchased her half of the building and have expanded my retail and showroom space to 8,000 square feet.

Q. You seem to have quite an eclectic mix of antiques and contemporary furniture.

A. Yes, McPherson is noted for its art galleries, contemporary furniture showrooms and antique galleries. Besides the furniture and accessories that are offered by Arlene Lilie Interior Design, we showcase the antiques of Louise Harre and custom iron furniture by Shannon O’Dougherty. I’ve also welcomed Elements of Design, a custom frame shop, into my building.

Q. What about your interior design services?

A. I’ve been an interior designer since the early 70’s when I started designing model homes for builders in the St. Louis 10

The store is arranged in room vignettes so customers can visualize how their interiors spaces can be transformed with our merchandise and our design expertise. Or, you may find that one special piece that brings a fresh perspective to your existing space.

Q. How do you work with your clients in achieving beautiful interiors?

A. My approach is to get to know the way my clients live, what they want to achieve in their space and how they want their space to best work for them in their daily lives. I incorporate their desires and needs with my own signature style to give them rooms that aren’t trendy, but rather timeless.

Q. Are you influenced by interior design trends?

A. I want to say, “Not that much,” but I must qualify that by saying that there is a constant evolution going on in all the arts that one falls into naturally. I get inspired when I travel and experience other cultures, and also by new products that are continuously coming on the market.

Ladue Pharmacy, an old-fashioned corner drugstore reminiscent of an earlier era at 9832 Clayton Rd., delivered medicine by bicycle in the 1950’s, and still offers delivery to regular customers, who know the store is large enough to meet their needs, yet small enough to know their name. It’s also the local U.S. Post Office.

Ladue, named after nineteenth century lawyer and banker Peter Albert LaDue, was established in 1936. According to statistics, Ladue has the highest median income of any city in the state of Missouri with a population over 1,000, is the best educated city in the state, and also has one of the highest median household incomes in the country.

In The City of Frontenac takes its name from French courtier Louis de Buade, the Count of Frontenac, and was incorporated in 1947.

True happiness and joy for millions of Americans is owning a pedigreed pooch or a loveable mixed breed dog! Your dogs whether they’re a pair of cuddly poodles a gorgeous golden retriever or a cute terrier are always important members of your family. Most often, a pet dog is the undisputed master of the house and is always very loyal to the entire family.

For those of you who adore dogs and have unwavering affection for your precious pets, there’s nothing better than proudly displaying a sentimental photograph of you and your favorite four-legged friends in your living room or den.

Uptown talked with St. Louis business owners about their delightful dogs and the unique qualities that make them so special. We also took candid photographs of these adorable canine companions with their proud owners and we‘d like to share these priceless photographs with you.

Carla Felumb, who owns Mister Guy Ladies’ Store in Ladue, is always in style, and so is the store’s pet Pug dog, Lucy. Carla refers to loveable Lucy as “our store dog”. Lucy is four years old and she absolutely loves being in the store and seeing the customers and staff. Carla says,“Lucy doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. She’s nice to everyone who comes in to the store.”Lucy belongs to Mister Guy sales associate, Shannon Langenstein. When Shannon lost her pet Pug, she bought Lucy when Lucy was a puppy. “Lucy has been coming to the store every day since she was a puppy,” says Carla.

Laura Bryan, owner of Wish Shoes, the chic shoe boutique in Ladue, is the proud owner of a Havanese dog named Norbert. “Norbert is five years old and he was born in Germany.

He is a very loyal dog,” says Laura. Laura’s mother, Felicity Pollnow, is also a dog lover and her pet dog is a Toy Munchkin, which is a very rare breed. This cuddly little canine weighs only six pounds and is named Gizmo.

There’s an elegant new store in Ladue called Savvy Surroundings, which is owned by Diane Fogarty and Pamela Calvert. Pamela owns two cuddly Teacup Poodles who come in to the store every day. The playful poodles, Savvy and Lucy, have their beds and food in the store. The two perky pet poodles get along very well with each other and love their home away from home, Savvy Surroundings. One of the precious poodles, which is black, is named Savvy, who is nine months old. The other Teacup poodle, which is red, is named Lucy, and she is nine months old. Visiting this chic home furnishings, accessories and interior design store is a must-see. When you’re exploring Savvy Surroundings, you’ll see these cute little poodles playfully roaming around in the store.

Tom Bourgeois, Senior, who is the owner of Glen Alspaugh Kitchens & Baths, is very fond of his four-year-old West Highland Terrier named Wes, who always comes to the office to be with Tom. Tom says, “Wes was previously owned by a woman who died. The second owners were retired, but they didn’t spend much time with Wes, which made them feel guilty, so they gave Wes to me. They knew that I would take good care of Wes because I am very fond of him.” Tom thinks that Wes looks exactly like the Westie who is in the Little Caesars television commercial. “Wes is a very good natured dog,” says Tom.

Elise says, “Hannah is a great playmate for our children. Hannah is part of our family, and she is also our protector. She’s a great watch dog and she follows me everywhere I go. I’ve trained Hannah to ring her dog bell when she wants to go outside."

If you don’t have a garden, Ladue Florist can create a charming bouquet of garden flowers for you. Candlelight works magic for outdoor dining so place lots of candles in hurricane vases on the table.

THE OUTDOOR COCKTAIL PARTY An outdoor cocktail party on your terrace or poolside is always the perfect way to entertain your friends. An easy to plan cocktail party that will earn you compliments is to gather ten to twenty of your friends. Send them an invitation from The Service Bureau. There are all sorts of clever invitations there. A twohour cocktail party from five to seven always works well. Set up an elegant bar outside on your terrace. We suggest a simple bar menu of white wine, beer, and a fun-to-serve drink such as pina coladas. You can mix up a batch ahead of time. Serve the drinks in your best glassware

TO ENTERTAIN OUTDOORS and add a wedge of fresh orange with a maraschino cherry to make the drinks fun and festive. ia Vino Enoteca is the newest addition to the Michael Del Pietro Restaurant Group, which includes Sugo’s Spaghetteria, Babbo’s Spaghetteria, and surprise!.....

Kilkenny’s Irish Pub. Via Vino is also part of a long-standing line of famed St. Louis restaurants. Owner Michael Del Pietro, Jr. literally grew up in his family’s business. His parents opened the original Del Pietro’s near The Hill in 1976, when Michael was only 9 years old. The dynastic name of Del Pietro has since become synonymous with great Italian dining, and Michael Del Pietro, Jr. works hard to ensure his parents’ traditions live on.

Del Pietro opened Via Vino last November near Plaza Frontenac.

It’s a very trendy wine bar conveniently located next door to another of his newer restaurants - Sugo’s Spaghetteria. Via Vino offers a bistro-like menu consisting of small hot and cold plates, salads and a few large entrées to make it all the more interesting.

Michael and his wife Melissa own and operate both of these Frontenac restaurants. They decided that their new eatery would be a little more unique and special than their other restaurants. Melissa said, “We really wanted something very different from the more rustic Sugo's, and loved the idea of having the two places being adjacent.

Michael and I have always enjoyed casual nights out with friends, sharing small plated dishes and wines. That was our inspiration. We wanted to share that same experience with our customers.”

works the weekends as restaurant manager. “But Michael's much better than I am and I always listen to him. He's getting pretty good at this!” she said laughingly. “When Michael’s on duty at his restaurant, he enjoys working in the kitchen. He especially loves making the pasta. Michael remains on the job until he feels comfortable with someone else taking over. He’ll also help by running behind the line if things get too crazy.”

Via Vino’s decor is very chic a la Roma with its dominant colors being high glossed blacks, whites and silvers. Its sophisticated ambience is reminiscent of the film classic La Dolce Vita. The restaurant’s ongoing vibe is lively, fun and exciting. The upscale clientele seem to enjoy the restaurant’s warm conviviality - chatting, eating, and imbibing against a background of upbeat music. In finer weather, the crowd simply spills outside for even more seating. Reservations are definitely recommended!

Via Vino is billed as an enoteca, that’s Italian for wine bar. Its best description is “a contemporary wine bar with global cuisine.” International flavors abound in both cuisine and vintages. The menu changes as often as the seasons, offering fresh new items and daily specials. Dishes range from contemporary American, Italian, French, to sometimes Asian influenced dishes.

that range in price from $4 - $12. Cold plate choices include poached shrimp, oysters on the half shell, marinated olives, salami and cheeses, a trio of cannelloni puree-olive tapenade-feta cheese, roasted peppers with soft herbed ricotta cheese and balsamic vinegar, plus assorted bruschette. Hot plated items include the very popular and substantial grilled tenderloin with Roquefort cheese and a red wine demi glaze. More international flavors are showcased with grilled shrimp and lemon beurre blanc (a customer favorite), homemade gnocchi in gorgonzola cream (Melissa’s favorite), and steamed Prince Edward Island mussels in a white burgundy sauce.

Fried artichokes with lemon aioli, grilled scallop atop of pureed potatoes, and house made chips with gorgonzola dip and truffle oil round out this tempting list.

Assortments of any of these small plated items, perhaps served with bruschette and salad, can make for delightfully light meals.

Flavorful salads include roasted beets and goat cheese with champagne vinaigrette, grilled asparagus and warm mushrooms, and of course, there’s always the Caesar Salad.

For those with heartier appetites, there’s a choice of welcoming comfort food entrees, ranging from $18 – 26. These include a half roasted chicken, steak au poivre, and usually a fish dish, like Chilean Sea Bass. Another very popular entrée is the tender and juicy double cut pork chop with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted apples.

Via Vino’s wine list offers a great range of French, American and Italian selections for all tastes and price ranges. There are plenty of choices - sparkling, reds and whites by the glass, as well as full, half and splits. Melissa explained, “We have 35 wines by the glass and have recently added several different featured wine flights.”

The menu list offers French and domestic varietals and blends. It includes 23 available by the half bottle or split, representing new and Old World styles. Melissa said, “Wines that are selling extremely well are those from Jim Dierberg’s superior wine operation, Pernot Puligny-Montrachet Chardonnay, and reds including Belle Glos Las Alturas Pinot Noir.”

Every great meal needs a finale, and Via Vino’s dessert list doesn’t disappoint. Included are a rich and creamy tiramisu, lava cake, crème brûlée, and a moist carrot cake fresh from the oven. Viva Via Vino!

Discover Naples!

Go ahead. Close your eyes and ponder "Florida," visions of the Everglades, pristine, white sand beaches, alligators, coastal mansions and ocean vistas flash into your mind ...

All this and more is Naples.

L

ocated on the Gulf side along the Southwest Florida coast in Collier County, the provocative, eclectic city of Naples rests with nearby Marco Island off the coast. Quiet, sugary sand beaches, biking, boating, fishing, golfing, nature centers, sanctuaries, shopping and, of course, the nearby Everglades make Naples the answer to any Florida vacation dream.

To get there from St. Louis, you can fly US Air non-stop on their once a day flight into Ft. Myers (RSW ) the closest airport to the city. All the rest of the carriers are connections, American through Chicago, Delta through Atlanta or Cincinnati and United through Charlotte.

The Ft. Myers airport is about 45 minutes north of Naples. Tampa is 165 miles away and Orlando is about a 4 to 4 1/2 hour trip. The major highway is I-75 with three exits leading to Naples. US 41 is also called Tamiami Trail and was once Southwest Florida's only highway, named for it's two most distant cities, Tampa and Miami. Many residents refer to it simply as "The Trail". In Naples, however, it is 9th Street North.

In 1946, Ohio manufacturer, Henry B. Watkins, Sr. moved to Naples with his family. He started a company which purchased the original Naples Hotel, dating to the 1880s, and leased the land today occupied by the Naples Beach Hotel and Country Club. Mr. Watkins and 2 partners hired a planner and laid out the city, putting in a golf course and beginning the movement to sell luxurious homes along the coast and on Marco Island, the largest of the fabled Ten Thousand Islands.

(Despite the name, the islands number only in the hundreds). Presently, some of these homes and locations are preserved resorts and very desirable real estate. Homes along the coast feature gardens, golf course views, ocean fronts, pools, verandas glass walls, Mediterranean and Spanish styles all with subtropical influence.

Southwest Florida is known as the "Golf Course Capitol of the World" offering such greens as Forest Glen, Arrowhead,The Rookery at Marco Island Marriott Resort and Golf Club, La Playa (Naples' only ocean front golf and spa resort) and the oldest but updated course at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf just to name a few.

The beaches are among the safest and cleanest. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park's beach was voted 10th of the nations Best 25 Beaches by America's Best On Line. The beach is actually separated from the mainland by marshes and waters, giving it a sense of privacy.

Lowdermilk has 1,000 feet of beach and lies very close to 5th Avenue South, 3rd St. South and Tin City. Other beaches include Vanderbilt, Clam Pass and Tigertail on Marco Island among others that line the coast. All along the strip of Olde Naples, you can view the magnificent mansions, the Naples Pier and relax, enjoy and reflect the calm, soothing water that attracts so many residents and travelers.

The beaches are not just for swimming, though these beaches do offer gentle slopes into the sea and warm water temperatures. In spring and summer,the water averages 84 degrees and in the fall and winter, the average is 71 degrees. Beaches are also for tanning and relaxing or for collecting shells. Naples beaches provide some of the best varieties of sea shells. Conches, whelks, scallops and Florida sand dollars are everywhere compared to Florida's east coast and collectors love strolls in the early mornings as they uncovering their ocean treasures.

Another note regarding the beaches that is worth mentioning is that May through September is Turtle Season. You might find stakes and ribbons along the beaches which mark the tender nests of loggerhead turtles. The turtles are protected by law as they are endangered species so stay away. Even thought around 180 eggs are in each nest, only 1 out of 400 reach maturity.

Just across from the Tigertail Beach area lies Sand Dollar Island, a nesting area and feeding spot for herons, egrets, ibis, terns and sandpipers, so even when on the beaches, you may want to bring your binoculars to capture the wildlife that only this area can offer.

Speaking of nature, if you are truly in tune, you will find exotic signs surround you. Watch the pelicans as they fish from the local piers, notice the Mushovy ducks that cross the roads and admire the variety of insects on your windshield!

For further explorations, pack your water, insect repellent, camera and binoculars and scout one of the many local sanctuaries or parks.

Less than an hour away from Naples, you will find the Everglades. In the heart of the marshlands, you'll find the Shark Valley Visitor Center, complete with restrooms, limited drinks and snacks. Here, a two hour air-conditioned tram takes you to see wildlife in natural settings. Otters, alligators, water birds and bobcats amidst the cypress and mangroves trees.

The Conservancy Nature Center includes butterfly and birding trails, kayak rentals, guided electric boat tours, a Discovery Center, Nature Store, Wildlife

Rehabilitation Center, and is site #69 of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Naturalists make daily presentations on the subjects of snakes, turtles, shells and other indigenous interests.

The other Conservancy's center is Briggs, which is the gateway to the Ten Thousand Islands. A boardwalk takes you through a beautiful butterfly garden where 27 varieties of Florida butterfly display their splendor and through other plant communities.

Other sanctuaries include the Collier Seminole State Park, the Big Cypress Natural Preserve (which is home to wild hog, black bear and Florida panthers) as well as the 11,000 acre Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and the J.N. "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge.

When treading water or stomping through marshlands gets too tiring and inside activities are more alluring than you ever thought possible, try a visit to the Naples Museum of Art which is part of the Philharmonic Center. This 3 story building has a glass dome conservatory and (Missouri Botanical Garden fans will love this) in the glass dome hangs a breathtaking beautiful Dale Chihuly red chandelier.

The Naples Art Association calls the von Liebig Art Center home. The Art Association sponsored the placement of 72 6 ft tall fiber glass gators to appear throughout Naples which were later sold for fundraising. There is at least one remaining for public viewing at Tin City, one of Naples' most popular shopping districts. Admission to the center is free!

If history is your passion, a unique museum called the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum is located on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. The museum houses artifacts and history displays and you can observe Seminole cooking, arts and crafts in a living village, enjoy a nature trail (complete with handicap access) through more than a mile of the Big Cypress Swamp. Immerse yourself in the fabulous gift shop which offers Native American music, jewelry and crafts.

On five acres of Florida gardens, the Naples Museum has much to offer. A working archaeological lab, a Seminole village, orchid house, wildlife displays, a 1910 steam locomotive and a recreated Seminole War fort and two historical cottages.

Art galleries, the Naples Botanical Garden, the Palm Cottage (home of the Collier County Historical Society) are additional options to the culturally minded adventurer. The Palm Cottage is the oldest house in Naples.

Sand, fun in the sun, exploring nature, culture, what else is there? Shopping!

For the best selection, the famous 5th Avenue South has an abundance of boutiques, galleries, restaurants cafes and antiques. This is the Main Street of Naples. Wine shops, imported and domestic gifts, jewelry and Florida fashion abound and you will love the ambiance of the stores. Try "Island Trends", "Julie's of Naples" and the colorful "Lady From Haiti" art. Eat at "El Pampa" the Argentinean Grill, buy stationary at "Arabesque" the fine stationer and gift shop or try Italian at "Bellini on Fifth".

Not all the action is on 5th Street Avenue. A few blocks away is 3rd Street South and the Avenues, which feature fountains, flower boxes and fantastic architecture..

Visit Tin City, which is on Naples Bay at Gordon's Pass. Home to a variety of shops, restaurants, boat and trolley tours and fishing charters. The site was once a clam shelling plant. Adjoining is Dockside Boardwalk which has open air shops and restaurants that overlook Naples Bay. Other shopping districts include Venetian Bay and the famous Pelican Bay and much more more.

When it comes to dining, the choices are endless. Dine by the water, in the water, on the beach, the pier, go casual or fine, Caribbean, French, Greek, Spanish, Cuban, Indian, Italian, African, Chinese or Southern Fried, Naples certainly has it all.

We have already mentioned one or two of the famous hotels in Naples. Hotels and motels in the area come in all brands, shapes and sizes and among the more well-known are Waldorf Astoria's Naples Grande Beach, and Edgewater Beach, Hilton Marco Island, Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club, Ritz Carlton, Marco Island Marriott and simply gorgeous Hotel Escalante.

A plethora of realty companies are on line so I, of course, would recommend your local trustworthy travel agent to help you find the right reputable company and property as well as the best airfare, car rental or transfers. (Re)Fresh: A Fashion Coalition (1701 S. Brentwood Blvd., Brentwood, 314-367-8373, refreshstl.org) will open later this month. Run by and for the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition, the retail store creates revenue, clothing and job training experience for its population of foster teens.

The store will be open to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (to foster and adoptive families on Thursdays) and specializes in clothing for teens and twenties. Its community outreach will also extend to local high school and college students by providing volunteer opportunities through work in the store and organizing clothing drives. Water Street Cafe (7268 Manchester Rd, Maplewood, 314-646-8355, waterstreetstl.com) is comfortable and off kilter just enough so, that you'll keep coming back for more.

Consider their "Forgotten Cocktails" weekly special.

Think "Mad Men" with drinks like Sidecars and Brandy Alexanders yet concocted with made in-house maraschino cherries, pickled onions and their own flavored liquors and spirit blends. Where else can you order a punch bowl for four? They also offer out of the ordinary non-alcoholic quaffs like Zombies and Muddled Raspberries. And half bottles of wine are plentiful.

Owner Gabe Kveton describes the menu as "eclectic bistro." Sister Maria Kveton acts as chef specializing in market fresh featured flat breads boasting local, organic ingredients. She balances that with comfort food like chicken pot pies and beef bourgignon stew using some of Grandma Pauline Kveton's family recipes. Truly a family endeavor, Grandma even did the lettering on the bistro awnings. Open Tuesday through Saturdays, 5 pm - 1 am, the kitchen stays open until midnight every day making this the perfect place to pop in for a drink and a bite before or after a show.

Salt (4356 Lindell, St. Louis, 314-932-5757, enjoysalt.com) newly opened in the space previously occupied by Savor, is the latest entrĂŠe into the St. Louis restaurant scene. Wes Johnson, formerly with Shaved Duck and Eclipse brings a tantalizing menu with a wide selection of charcuterie including a citrus gravlox and a pork and black garlic rillette. Entrees include everything from a cornmeal-stuffed saddle of rabbit to a pork steak with apple butter risotto. Since this is not your usual fare, it is definitely worth the trip. Open for dinner from Wednesday through Monday, 5 to 11 (closed Tuesdays) and Saturday and Sunday Brunch, 10 - 2.

St. Louis Wing Co (9816 Manchester Road, Webster Groves, 314-962-9464, stlwingco.com) does wings - and a few sides. But not just any wings. Chef Bobby Tessler, formerly of Mia Rosa and Wildflower brings his expertise to create an appetizing new treat for St. Louis. His wings come, either bone-in or boneless, in 12 different flavors including Fresh Herb Walnut Pesto, Spicy Fresh Jalapeno, Traditional Hot and Coconut Curry. Along with standard sides of fries and slaw there are also tantalizing accompaniments like Fried Macaroni Wedges - crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and Sweet Potato Fries with Jerk Chili Mayonnaise. Perfect for lunch or a party (Family Packs come in 30, 50 or 100 pieces) these are sure to become a St. Louis classic that will rival toasted ravioli. Open Sunday through Thursday 10 - 9, and Friday and Saturday 10 - 10.
