Q. What are the new interior design trends?

A. We’re beginning to see a consumer re-evaluation of what it means to still live comfortably, yet finding a balance with changing technology and our personalized space. Consumers are looking for a sense of home in a growing global society. In the book Interior Trends 2011, released by IMM Cologne, designers are re-balancing and creating innovative new products that combine technology with environmentally eco-conscious guidelines. One example in furniture is using simple angular structures in natural warm woods and colors of ash grays or blacks followed by splashes of yellow or orange. Another is combining art and design to work with the virtual world in our real world, taking metals and plastics that combine to form a changeable surface.

Colors are very neutral such as grays, black with using the warm side of the color wheel to compliment. What all of this means is that it’s a very exciting, innovative time for all of us as designers and consumers.

A. My style is developing a beautiful yet comfortable living or working environments for my clients. I listen very carefully to hear what is most important to their wants and needs, space and budget criteria. There are unlimited options in all style genre and it’s by working with my clients that will define “the look”.

Beaver Creek escape to

aturday afternoon, December 4, I glanced at the television, taking a break from the weekend house chores. There on the screen was the Audi Birds of Prey World Cup Ski Race amidst the beautiful setting of Beaver Creek Colorado. The resort area played host to the three days of racing including Downhill, Super G and Giant Slalom but what impressed me the most was the perfect powdery snow and the stunningly lovely scenery.

instructors. With an average annual snowfall of 311 inches, 300 days of sunshine, the elevation at the base is 8,100 ft and the top reaches 11, 440 ft, giving perfect powder snow conditions. There are 17 lifts, 1,815 acres and the runs which divide as 19% beginners, 43% intermediate and 38% expert. For two weeks in February of 2015, the World Alpine Ski Championships will feature men’s and women’s racing on these mountain terrains .

As of February 2010, the house of Gerald Ford's was for sale for 13 million dollars, The late Steven Fosset, the explorer, also resided in Beaver Creek.

Getting to Beaver Creek by car from the Denver Airport will take you through a 130 mile drive through the Rockies. My children and I have a tradition of listening to American Indian spiritual CD's while traveling through these snowy valleys and experience the dramatic and glorious scenery. It is simply awesome. Frontier, United and US Air have convenient flights from St. Louis.

Another alternative is flying directly into Vail/Eagle County Airport which is just 25 miles west of Beaver Creek, then taking ground transportation to your lodging destination.

icture a charming ski village in a secluded canyon, riding the lift up the snow-covered mountain, surrounded in with the panoramic vista of the Colorado Rockies. The popular alternative is sitting on your living room couch, watching reruns of "Seinfeld" and wishing it was summer again. Don't do it! Get up and go and experience a memory you won't soon forget! Colorado beckons you to discover Denver and the affordable resorts that lie only a couple of hours away from the Mile High city!

Remember, you don't have to ski to enjoy the ambiance and serenity of a mountain resort.

For those of you snow bunnies who are new to visiting the area, I strongly suggest that you do your homework before you go. Planning your trip is great fun so enjoy looking at your options!

Travel agencies can help answer questions and price packages from reputable vendors and what I love the best, give you hard copy descriptive brochures that help you visualize your trip. What fun to turn off the TV and sit on that living room couch pouring over the detailed beautifully designed brochures and planning your vacation together!

Ask yourselves what activities you would like to do. Museums? Nightlife?

Cross-country skiing? Art galleries? Hot chocolate and fireplaces? Spa? What is your budget? When would you like to travel? How long of a stay? The answers to these questions will help you make a decision as each resort has its own unique personality. What is your dream?

Is an active ski area full of activity, boutiques, restaurants, art, theater, music and nightlight your choice or would you prefer a quiet, relaxing low-key, picture postcard setting? Colorado has them all.

The bulk of ski towns are directly west of Denver high in the Rockies. From St. Louis to Denver, in fact, to Vail, Beaver Creek and Glenwood Springs, you never have to turn off Highway 70 till you get to your destination! Frontier, Southwest, American and United all fly into Denver so flights are abundant and often.

Certain resort areas such as Aspen have their own small airports plus there are shuttle services to the ski area and plenty of car rental companies. Hertz has ski racks and snow tires and Emergency Road Assistance.

If you have never been to Denver, please know the city is certainly worth a couple of overnight stays. The new Denver Art Museum is incredible, three gigantic sports stadiums, the 16th Street Mall in the heart of the city and on the north end, is LoDo, a hip historic district with jazz, cafes, restaurants and sports bars. Not far away is the very popular Cherry Creek Shopping District, not to mention the great Denver Zoo, History Museum and some of the older house tours such as the Molly Brown House.

Denver is at the base of the mountains with the Front Range cuddling Ft. Collins, Loveland, Boulder and Colorado Springs and about 2 hours away from the closer bigger resorts.

When pricing and planning your mountain resort vacation packages. you will want to consider meal costs, lodging, convenience to the nearest town, what to pack, the best means of transportation, travel time and cost of your activities. If the family is going, are there plenty of opportunities for the children to enjoy? If you are a skier, check out the available ski runs vs your capabilities, such as beginners, intermediate and expert runs. Calculate the cost of lift tickets, equipment rentals, perhaps a ski school. Does your resort have special amenities? Ski in/ski out directly from the hotel? Are the

nearby restaurants according to your tastes? Are they attainable? Doing your homework ahead of time is not only fun but can save you needless heartache once you are at your destination and relax and enjoy.

To help you with some of these preliminary issues, below are some of the approximate driving times to Colorado's hottest resort areas from Denver.

The Aspen/Snowmass area in the Elk mountain range has evolved from a small mining town to a world famous, celebrity attraction with any feature you could possibly desire. Four mountains, the Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass combined total 5,303 acres and 336 trails and 46 lifts and you can ride them on only one lift ticket.

The area includes Snowmass which has beginner slopes and features the Treehouse Kids Adventure Center which is a licensed day care and part of a $17 million project that opened the 2007-2008 season. Each room's design is tailored for a specific age group and a licensed registered nurse is on site.

Children, depending on age, have access to hands on activities, puppet theater, and toys and planned events.

Aspen has long been "The Place To Be Seen" and now offers theater, jazz, top restaurants, art galleries and is also a fashion center. In fact, the third annual Aspen Fashion Week (Mar. 13 - 17, 2011) will showcase and market winter resort, ski and technical outerwear. Chesterfield and Town & Country ... Suburbs

T

he areas of Chesterfield and Town and Country conjure up many images in people's minds: beautiful homes; great shopping and dining; a thriving business community; and easy access to all the resources anyone could ever want raising a family. As little as 20 years ago, or less, you could still pass by silos and barns driving down highway 40 signifying the agrarian community that once was.

Chesterfield and Town and Country through the Ages

Chesterfield, located just 25 miles west of downtown St. Louis, has grown and changed continually since it first became a named community way back in 1818. Colonel Justus Post is said to have come here in 1815 from Middlebury, Vermont with an IOU for $1,000 from the government for services rendered in the war of 1812 and an estate of $12,000, which he used to purchase land. Eventually he bought 21,204 acres which straddled Wild Horse Creek Road and ran between Baxter and Wilson Roads and became the original Chesterfield community. Through others' purchases, the area continued to expand. You can still see remnants of the community's early heritage in the Farmer's Bank Building (circa 1914), listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the nearby row of bungalows and the 1920s Slaughter House which is now home to the studio of nationally renowned artist Don Wiegand.

Town and Country was also originally woodlands and farm lands.

Located just 12 miles from downtown St. Louis, the area is dotted with white fences and grazing horses to this day. Known for its large lots - most are an acre - it is primarily residential but has been enhanced relatively recently with several upscale shopping centers which add to the

convenience and sophisticated nature of the area. The town incorporated in 1950 as a village with less than 1,000 residents and has grown to its current population of about 11,000.

Though both towns have grown and evolved over the years, perhaps the most dramatic changes came to Chesterfield after the Big Flood.

In St. Louis terms that would be the great flood of 1993. At the time, I was working in "The Valley" and I remember vividly the men folk going down to the Monarch levee each morning to check its saturation point.

It was a point of pride for them, strapping on their masculinity, daring Mother Nature to threaten to destroy modern evolution. Eventually, Mother Nature won. The levee broke and engulfed the entire area including Highway 40 with enough water that these same men would take their John boats out on the highway and among the flooded buildings on rescue missions.

Shortly after you could see signs in the valley reiterating the famous line from the movie Field of Dreams, "Build it and they will come."

And come they did. The area, which some still refer to as "Gumbo Flats" (the name comes from the rich, silty soil which becomes clay like when it gets wet) has grown astronomically from three or four restaurants antediluvian, to include perhaps thirty restaurants now, hotels, the Kemp Auto Museum, and a Walmart which anchors the longest shopping center in the country.

A Great Place to Call Home

Most know both Chesterfield and Town and Country as towns with beautiful subdivisions with relatively new houses (between five and forty years old) that allow home-owners to spread out a bit. In fact, most of

the lots in Town and Country are a full acre in size. In Chesterfield, however, community planning provides for a balanced mix of single family homes, villa condominiums, apartments and retirement/assisted living communities. Single family homes range in price from $140,000 to more than $2.5 million. This blend is one of the many reasons over 46,000 people happily call Chesterfield home.

Lisa Accurso, relocation specialist with the William French Real Estate Firm, says clients are especially attracted to the area because of "what they can get for the dollar." Specializing in the needs of out-of-towners moving to the area, Accurso finds clients are drawn to the newer, executive homes, the ample lot size, the convenience to shopping and highways, and the excellent schools. Those who really want the lot size are attracted to Town and Country, while those with children often are more geared to Chesterfield which she describes as "typical American suburban living". It's populated by "a lot of families with kids, where everything centers around the kids."

If you prefer to start from scratch and build your own home, Accurso describes Chesterfield as being nearly "built-out". However, Town and Country is seeing a recent resurgence in teardowns and rebuilding. The generous lot sizes accommodate most home builder's plans, and the neighborhoods' upscale reputations can fully support the enhanced property values.

The region is served by two of the best public school districts in the St. Louis area, Parkway and Rockwood, and is complemented by private schools accommodating a variety of religious preferences. Priory, a premier Catholic boys school; Solomon Schechter, a private Jewish school; Principia, the Christian Scientist boarding school; and nationally renowned Churchill Center and School for kids with learning disabilities are all located in Chesterfield and Town and Country.

Endless Entertainment Whether you're a skater, a thespian, a special-needs baseball player or just a casual walker, both towns have multiple parks and green spaces which will entice you to try something you never thought you might.

One of the most widely-known landmarks is the 8,000 square foot Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House which puts you directly in touch with more than 1,000 butterflies delighting people of all ages. After you enjoy your butterfly kisses, relive your childhood with a ride on the beautifully restored 1920s carousel that will take you back and simultaneously give your child a thrill and a taste of history. Both of these are located in attractive Faust Park which hosts numerous family activities including Concerts in the Park in the summer, and various holiday events.

Longview Farm Park which dates back to the 1820s is the remnant of a farm that once encompassed over 350 acres. The former residential home, converted from a log cabin built around 1870, sits amid the park's bucolic setting and is now available for private rental.

Those who dream of being a pro athlete can train at Ozzie Smith's Sports Academy or the Hardee's Iceplex, host to national championships in speed skating and ice hockey and home to the St. Louis Bandits and AAA Blues hockey teams. For more casual athletes there are a variety of rec-centers: Jewish Community Center; YMCA; and The Club at Chesterfield. For outdoor recreation there are multiple parks like the CBC Cadet Park, which offers walking paths, athletic fields and multipurpose courts. In the summertime residents enjoy the Chesterfield Family Aquatic Center that boasts all the fun modern-age water features as well as a 25-yard competitive pool.

Local hero Albert Pujols partnered with the City of Chesterfield to construct Miracle Field, an athletic field created especially for children with special needs. The rubberized surface and oversized dugouts are designed to accommodate wheelchairs fulfilling the tenet that "every child deserves a chance to play baseball."

Golf enthusiasts have a variety of both private and public courses within reach. Nearby private courses include Forest Hills, Meadowbrook, Four Seasons, and the Missouri Bluffs in St. Charles. Challenging, convenient public courses include the Landings at Spirit in Chesterfield, Crystal Springs Quarry in Maryland Heights and the Links at Dardenne in O'Fallon.

Artistic souls can take classes from award-winning Stages Academy, the Community Music School of Webster University, Chesterfield Arts, or see a live performance at the YMCA's 370 seat theater. istro 1130 opened just last September, and has quickly become a destination restaurant in West County. If you’re not inclined to travel to France, why not take a shorter trip to this beautiful place. You’ll then experience all the ambience and flavors of an authentic French bistro.

The story of the “sexiest French restaurant in town” began and ends with romance.

Once upon a time an American lady from Pittsburgh and a French chef from Marseilles fell in love. Eric Miranne and his wife Mikki Jones-Miranne are that FrancoAmerican couple. Married since July 2009, the Mirannes blended their families as well – adding Mikki’s thirteen year old daughter and Eric’s six year old son.

From the very beginning, the Mirannes always had the same romantic vision – that of opening a small French restaurant in St. Louis. Their plans finally evolved when Mikki chose the perfect venue and Eric, the perfect menu.

Bistro 1130’s unique location is within a beautiful shopping center on a three-acre lake in Town & Country.

“I was sold when I first saw the waterfront view and called Eric immediately. He agreed with my ideas and that’s how it started,” said Mikki.

Eric and Karim’s teamwork is seamless.

Eric emphasized, “Karim and I come up with all the dishes ourselves. We understand each other very well. The best element is that we use the same cooking techniques; we always seem to be on the same page.”

Attention to detail abounds throughout Bistro 1130, especially in the kitchen. Every delectable dish is superbly presented

by Chef Karim Bouzammour, a Moroccan native who was classically trained in French cooking. Karim had formerly spent his career working in Marseilles, as well as in the Provence region of southwest France.

To avoid any confusion, Bistro 1130’s traditional French menu has kindly been translated to English. Featuring a la carte French Mediterranean cuisine, it offers great choices. Eric listed just a few of their diners’ favorite delights in order - from appetizer to dessert:

Ooh la la, we also have a lot a fun,” said Eric.

exquisite interior. Patterned after intimate bistros, the upscale restaurant comfortably seats 48, but can also do a party of 65 with a different arrangement of the dining room. The bar area holds 15, and weather permitting, outside dining can accommodate another 16 to 20.

Because of so many requests from patrons, Bistro 1130 is now open for lunch. For musical entertainment, le jazz hot is normally provided on weekends from 7 to 11 p.m.

Eric enjoys everything on the menu, especially the flavorful sweetbreads. Mikki favors the goat cheese salad, sautéed foie gras, the lamb trio, and of course all the specials her husband comes up with.

Eric said, “We just added a new pasta dish - white fettuccini with langoustine creme sauce and fresh black truffles from perrigord.”

The bistro’s inspiration came from a romantic film. “Eric and I love the movie No Reservations, and adored that little restaurant setting.” Asked why Bistro 1130 is the sexiest French restaurant in St. Louis - Mikki explained, “In the evening when lights are low, it has this sexy feel.

With its elegant, dark, classy and cozy layout - it simply sets the mood. I think the wall fireplace is just plain cool.” With its soft lighting, dramatic black and gold color scheme, white leather banquettes stretched along a mirrored wall – everything is so very French. “I selected most of the colors and patterns myself. Eric had a major part in the design of the wine rack and my good friend, Nettie White, created the faux painting. We share the same design tastes, so Nettie and I worked well together as we moved around the bistro. We just let our imaginations take off.”

Mikki summarized, “This lovely little French bistro is truly our dream come true. We are so happy with our friends, old and new, for sharing it with us. We thank them very much.” And so, they lived La Vie en Rose - happily ever after.

C’est si bon!

The full bar offers a nice variety of some 80 French and American wines, along with a great selection of custom designed martinis.

Dinner: Tuesday to Saturday 5:45 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Eric and Karim traditionally offer wonderful weekend specials. “We take extra time to create great dishes for discerning people to experience. I’m already thinking about a new entrée for the winter season.”

Added to this fine French cuisine is Bistro 1130’s impeccable service. The friendly staff flawlessly ministers to every whim all the while whisking away table crumbs and replacing fresh silverware and napkins as needed. As official hostess, Mikki said, “Although I try to be in the restaurant every night, I’m usually just there on weekends.” Besides taking care of her family, tireless Mikki is also owner of A True Spa in Chesterfield Valley. But she too has a restaurant background. “I worked at Sunset West as banquet and lunch manager, so I’m used to organizing large parties.” Mikki’s designing expertise is reflected in the restaurant’s

If you're more of a foodie than a fashionista, there are several new additions to the St. Louis restaurant landscape. Ginger Bistro, (6665 Delmar, University City, 314-222-2588, gingerintheloop.com) Asian fusion restaurant creates exotic signature cocktails like the "Flirtini" and the "Sparkling Uma" (sparkling saki and plum wine) to complement their house specialties which include Korean Bulgoki beef and Peppercorn Prawns. If you're not quite that daring, try their large selection of $4.95 lunch specials (served from 11:30-2:30 Mon - Sat) like the Philly Cheese Steak Rolls or opt from their extensive sushi menu. And if you're still really more of the "I'll just have a drink and watch my friends eat raw fish" kind of person, check out their Monday through Friday Happy Hour specials (3-6 and 10 pm-12 am).

Seasons American Cuisine, (79 Forum Center at the corner of 141 and Olive, Chesterfield, 314-523-7374, seasonsamericancuisine. com) comes to us from a couple of home-grown St. Louis boys. They got their feet wet locally, trained at the CIA and Le Cordon Bleu, and returned home to bring us a tantalizing menu focused on the best locally sourced products available for each of the four seasons. Before the bread even comes out you'll be treated to a risotto teaser to entice you on to their entrees like: Blue Crab, Lobster and Mushroom Crepes; Chicken Modiga; and Baja Fish Tacos. Whether you're enjoying lunch or dinner, make sure to save room for the double chocolate crème brulée or the warm pear spice cake. Tues - Fri 11am-3pm; Fri and Sat 5-10; Sun 4-9.

For a quick bite try Manjelou's Pizzeria. (8135 Forsyth, Clayton, 314-863-5064, Fax:314-863-7062 manjelous.com) They use local, organic produce to top their specialty pizzas where you get to pick the cheese - classic mozzarella, or St. Louis preferred provel. Get it by the slice or the whole pie, or choose a sandwich or pasta instead. And while you're finishing off the kid's slice (they're huge - 1/6 of an 18" pie) they'll love decorating their own, private brownie - for free! Sun-Thurs 11-9, Fri-Sat 11-11.

I've given you several choices to reward yourself with (and that’s only what I could fit in the column.) Now put down that doughnut, get out to the gym, and get crackin' on those resolutions so you can hurry up and treat yourself.
