Jan’s Hallmark Discusses How Important Connecting Is To Your Health

E

ric Tschannen, with Jan’s Hallmark, realizes the pandemic has been hard on people not only because of the reality of COVID-19 effects, but the sheer amount of time spent social distancing and even isolating. Here are some of his thoughts on how connecting with each other remains more important than ever. MM: How does the staff at Jan’s Hallmark help your customers stay connected? ET: Since the pandemic started we have all had to make sacrifices and adjust our lives in a number of different ways. We’ve missed birthdays and holidays, along with postponing important events like weddings and graduations. While making constant adjustments is frustrating, the epidemic of loneliness, for many people, is the most significant challenge they face. With roughly one out of three seniors living on their own through the pandemic, it’s more important than ever to stay connected to our friends and family. While there is no vaccine for loneliness, there is a cure! Even though it’s difficult to get together, it is still possible and necessary to stay connected with those we care about. At Jan’s Hallmark, our team is there every day offering solutions for self expression that will help you stay connected when you can’t see your loved ones as often as you’d like.

MM: What are some of Jan’s Hallmark new product lines? ET: One of the newest additions to our store this year is our “Real Stories” product line. This selection features cards and gifts all focused around connecting with our loved ones and offering them messages of appreciation, support and encouragement. Send a “You’re Amazing” card and coffee mug to your friend who is a teacher, a first-

responder or a parent trying to figure out remote learning. There’s also the “Here For You” card for a friend who might be dealing with the loss of a job or a loved one. But there’s no need to wait for a difficult time or a special occasion to let your loved ones and friends know you are thinking of them. Our “Just Because” card line offers creative, colorful ways to add some positivity to the world on any given day. In addition, “Recordable Storybooks” are a great way to cheer up the youngest members of your family. These unique books allow you to read them a bedtime story even though you’re far away. Voice Save technology ensures that your voice will be preserved for years to come, even when the batteries die. New customers will receive a free card form our “Just Because” card line on-the-spot when they sign up for a free rewards membership. Rewards Members can also receive a free card each month in 2021 by adding an email address to their membership. “Life events are still happening everyday to us and to the ones we love. Reach out and make sure it’s known that they aren’t alone,” Tschannen said. “Send a card or make a call; whether it’s cause for a celebration or time for a comforting word, sharing in an experience will add value and connection to your life. While nothing can replace the face to face time we spend with our loved ones, it is essential to seek out new opportunities to connect with one another. Here at Jan’s Hallmark, we’re ready to help you do just that.” Visit Jan’s Hallmark in Columbia Center; Belleville Crossing; Green Mount Crossing; Alton Square Mall; and Edwardsville.

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastions of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specializes in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

6 Reasons To Get A Canine Companion When You Hit 50 Lashley Animal Hospital And Studies In "The Journal of Physical Activity And Health" Discuss The Benefits Of A Pet

I

f your nest is empty - by circumstance or by choice - think about getting a dog. Known for their devotion and happy dances, dogs can take a big bite out of isolation. Just hanging out with a furry friend has a revitalizing effect. Here are six benefits of later-life dog ownership.

Dogs Keep You Fit

Adopt a dog and ditch that pricey personal trainer. One particular study in the journal, published in 2009, found that dog owners walk approximately one hour longer per day than those without a fetching friend in their lives.

Dogs Make You Healthier

Another journal study published in 2016 also showed that dog-owning seniors have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol than their pet-less peers. Having a dog also reduces the risk of heart attack - and boosts your chances of long-term survival if you have one.

Dogs Are Social Mediums

A natural-born icebreaker, your dog will introduce you to everyone from next-door neighbors to perfect strangers. It’s impossible to pass a dog without making a “pat stop,” so head for the park - Bowser will take it from there.

They Organize Your Day

In the same way a canine friend can help an introvert, a dog may keep one sane, showered and solvent. Because a dog owner knows he/she must feed and walk a dog at certain times, they are more organized during the day. Makes sense: Dogs, like humans, thrive on structure; they need to be fed, walked and nurtured at regular intervals.

Dogs Get You

MRI scanners showed that the canine brain reacts to voices and sounds, such as crying or laughter, in the same way the human brain does. Dogs are also the only non-human animals who scan the left side of a face - the process whereby people, too, “read” emotions.

They Boost Quality of Life

For many older Americans, a dog means the difference between a life lived and a life merely endured. Dogs help you stay safe and independent: They provide ears for the deaf, eyes for the blind and an early warning system at the approach of dangers (both real and imagined, of course!). Dry Eye Disease Is a Common, Treatable Condition

D • • • • • • • • • • •

ry Eyes are a part of the natural aging process. In fact, the majority of people over the age of 65 experience symptoms of Dry Eye. Patients are advised to seek treatment if they have any of the symptoms below: Blurry Vision Redness Burning Itching Light Sensitivity Excessive Tearing/Watery Eyes Tired Eyes/Eye Fatigue Stringy Mucus in or around the eyes Foreign Body Sensation Contact Lens Discomfort Scratchy feeling or Sand/Grit in eye

People that have Dry Eye Disease either do not produce enough tears or their tears are of such poor quality that they cannot lubricate and nourish the eye effectively. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front of the surface of the eye and for providing clear vision.

Tears also provide lubrication, which reduces the risk of eye infection, washes away foreign matter in the eye and keeps the eyes smooth and clear. Dry Eye Disease can easily interfere with work and normal life activities if not treated. Factors that lead to Dry Eye Disease can include age, medications, refractive eye surgery, long-term use of contact lenses and medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems and inflammation of the eyelids. Other factors can also be associated with doing every day tasks like staring at computer screens, televisions, or electronic readers for long periods of time. In addition, things like exposure to air conditioning, wind, smoke and dry climates contribute to Dry Eye. Untreated Dry Eye Disease can lead to permanent damage to the lids, eye and vision. However, the good news is that by properly diagnosing the type of Dry Eye Disease early on there are successful treatments including supplements, warm compresses, lid cleansers, drops and now a natural Intense Pulse Light therapy. Drs. Thomas and Alice Unger in Troy and Edwardsville have the technology to provide patients with a comprehensive eye exam to evaluate, test and treat Dry Eye Disease. Call Unger Eye Care today to make an appointment at (618) 667-2020 or (618) 655-EYES.

Struggling With Homework And Learning From Home reading and learning including: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual memory and visual perceptual skills. According to Dr. Thomas Unger of Unger Eye Care,“The good news is that once vision problems are diagnosed and treated, reading and learning are no longer a struggle. Homework gets done more quickly and without so many battles.”

S

hort attention span, eye fatigue and difficulty focusing are just a few concerns that parents are noticing since working with their children from home on homework and remote learning.

For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at 618-655-EYES (3937) or visit the web site at readingandvision.com.

Such concerns could be attributed to a deficit in vision required for learning. A child’s 20/20 vision is not enough. It takes a minimum of 17 visual skills to read, do homework and use computer screens. Strong visual skills are crucial for all aspects of learning. Have you been observing any of the following? • Slow or incomplete copy from the board, computer screen or paper. • Avoiding reading. • Reading below grade level. • Poor reading comprehension. • Frequently losing place while reading. • Spelling difficulties. • Complaining about words moving on the page or screen. • Short attention span. • Smart in everything but school. • Labeled ADD, ADHD or Dyslexic. • Working below potential. • Eye Fatigue or eye rubbing. • Reversal of letters or numbers. • Blurred vision when looking near to far. Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that an eye exam is needed from a developmental optometrist. Since 80 percent of all learning is done through vision, it is important to have a developmental vision evaluation to test all the visual skills critical to
