Dear Loyal Patients of Dr. Christopher Dugan It is with gratification that I announce my official retirement from the practice of podiatry.

After 36 years of service, I would very much like to thank my patients for their trust, my office staff, nurses and colleagues in the medical community, Dr. Kim Reichert in particular, for their help in the building of a podiatry medical practice based on compassion, integrity, and humility. Special thanks to my family from whom I sacrificed time away to establish a practice that I felt was worthy of my patients. I look forward to spending more time with my wife, children, grandchildren, and friends in addition to a good life balance of volunteerism and travel.

A Partnership By Design Two women-owned businesses, Eye on Design and JSB Designs, collaborate to offer a one-stop design experience in the Metro East

T

his year, Americans have done something they haven’t done in decades. They just stayed home.

True, it wasn’t necessarily by choice; the pandemic had a major hand in everything about life in the last year. But by staying home, things previously lost have been rediscovered.

“People have spent so much more time in their homes in the last year, they’re looking around and realizing that they want their rooms to be what they’ve always imagined they could be,” Geoppo said. “The most rewarding moment for me is watching a client experience the kitchen or bedroom they’ve been dreaming of for years.”

Relationships have been renewed with family; working remotely required some creativity; and many have relearned how to just “be.” It’s been therapeutic to remember that “home” can be the most beautiful place on earth to live, work and play if chosen to make it that way.

JSB Designs and Eye on Design partner on many projects, with the former creating the interior design plans for the space and implementing the design, while the latter fabricates and installs custom window treatments and soft furnishings such as cushions, pillows or bedding.

That’s why the collaboration between Eye on Design and JSB Designs, two women-owned businesses in Belleville, has been more important than ever to clients in the St. Louis Metro East Region.

“Together, we simplify the design and procurement process for our clients, whether they are interested in redesigning one room, refreshing a floor or building a new home,” Brown said. “Together we have more than 40 years of experience excluding the experience of our employees and the craftsmen we work with. But we also believe in learning from our clients. We want every project to fit their needs, style and vision.”

Eye on Design, located at 309 East Main Street in Belleville, is not just a Hunter Douglas Gallery. Owned by Jennaver Brown, Eye on Design has been helping clients transform their homes and businesses with affordable custom drapery, blinds, shutters and soft furnishings since 2005.

If you’re looking to refresh, remodel or redesign your home this spring, contact Eye on Design and/or JSB Designs.

JSB Designs, an interior design firm owned by Jill Geoppo, recently relocated to the same location at 309 East Main Street. JSB Designs works with commercial and residential clients, custom designing each project to meet the needs and style of her client.

Eye on Design offers complimentary in-home consultations. Contact them at (618) 257-9750, admin@eod4u.com or www.eod4u.com. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or on Saturdays by appointment.

In the past few years - and particularly over the last year - the two design businesses have collaborated to provide more comprehensive services and help clients transform their homes into the space they’ve always dreamed about.

New! Co-Owners Of Turfology Love Using Their Knowledge To Create The Perfect Lawn

E

dwardsville native Tanner Houba and long-time Edwardsville resident Michael Brantley have hung their shingle as co-owners of the new company: Turfology. Offering the best in lawn care services, the two knew that they could go beyond mowing grass to the actual science part of treatment and application to produce the finest lawns in the Metro East. “I had been cutting grass and Michael nudged me toward learning more about the fertilization and pest control side of lawn care,” Houba said. “We’ve been doing our research and love the results you can provide homeowners with the right scientific techniques. This doesn’t even feel like a job; We love it!”

Brantley agreed and said, “I had been working with Envisioning Green - an outdoor design and build company here in the Metro East - for about five years starting on the construction side and then the foreman offered to switch me to the lawn care side. The more I got into it the more I loved the chemistry. In fact, the worse the lawn, the better!"

"Great customer service by two turf pros! Don’t waste your time or money on the commercial guys this summer. Tanner and Michael will treat your yardwiththecareandloveitdeserves at a reasonable price! - Jade S.

The two have worked diligently to obtain proper certifications and have participated in a lot of ongoing education regarding lawn care. Interestingly, the duo has found that COVID-19 has not been bad for their industry, indeed, they’ve found more business as people stayed home and decided to spend their extra money on their homes rather than vacations and dining out.

Services Offered by Turfology:

Turfology covers all of St. Clair and Madison counties, and offers a number of different annual packages to suit their customers’ needs. Call either one today for a free estimate at (618) 294-2703 (Brantley) or (618) 979-8609 (Houba); and visit www.turfology.io.

ORGANIZE YOUR HOME With A Garage Or Closet Remodel

I

nterestingly, the garage is generally the most under-utilized space in the home. Although it’s an extension of the home - and is the dumping ground for everything that doesn’t fit in the house – it’s important to have a plan for garage storage that can help organize the entire home. When the holiday’s roll around and the sports seasons change, the home can be ready no matter what time of the year. A Tailored Living garage organization specialist will help maximize garage storage space with custom garage cabinets and wall storage solutions tailored to the client’s particular activities. “Won’t it be nice to find exactly what you’re looking for when you need it,” said Rich McQuay, owner of Tailored Living of West St. Louis County and St. Charles, Mo. “I guarantee you will wonder how you ever overlooked this valuable, extra garage storage space."

Custom Closets

Not all closets are created equal. Throughout the home, there are undoubtedly several types of closets: walkin, reachin, utility, easilyaccessible and “why-is this-even-here space?” Closet space is valuable in any home and, generally, no one believes they have enough. Tailored Living’s designers can help maximize closet storage space throughout your home with custom closet systems. “Whether in the bedroom, family room or entryway, the company guarantees there is more space than you realize with our custom storage solutions,” McQuay said. “ We can help you unclutter and organize for more efficient, stress-free living with custom closet systems.” Call (618) 416-1839 or (636) 728-0333 to schedule a free in-home consultation and 3D design. Tailoredliving.com and RAKcoatings.com.

Using a combination of garage cabinets, shelves or Slatwall wall storage systems, overhead racks and custom garage flooring, the garage will be transformed into a masterpiece of utility and beauty, making garage organization a part of everyday life. Custom garage cabinets give a clean, uniform look to your garage. Cabinets bring order out of chaos by hiding everything behind closed doors. Clutter and piles are eliminated and there’s a designated place for every item in the garage. Open wall storage is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels and hoses that create a safety hazard if stacked on the floor. But no garage design is truly complete without new garage flooring. Untreated, dull concrete will not only detract from beautiful new cabinets, it’s harder to keep clean, tends to hold moisture and cold, and is ergonomically at odds with knees and backs. Tailored Living has a wide range of options for garage flooring to add that finishing touch. Marketplace Magazine | Early Spring Issue 2021 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 13

Planning For Spring With HeartLands Conservancy By Landon Brooks, HeartLands Conservancy

S

outhern Illinois’ largest conservation nonprofit invites residents to prepare for spring by engaging with nature in a variety of ways this season. From volunteer work days to educational opportunities, and a Home and Garden Spring Sale, HeartLands Conservancy has something to offer every environmental enthusiast in 2021. As a steward of distinctive and dynamic places of ecological, cultural, and community value, HeartLands Conservancy looks forward to another year of positive transformation in the region.

Some of the organization’s 2020 accomplishments include: • • • • • •

152 acres of wetlands, prairies, and cultural sites conserved 508 trees planted throughout the region 4.4 million lbs of pollutants prevented from reaching lakes and streams 1,050 hours of volunteer hours clocked 750 citizen science observations recorded 602 milkweed varieties planted for monarch butterfly habitat expansion

In 2021, HeartLands Conservancy remains focused on advocating and partnering for the protection of important places and the development of solutions that balance conservation strategies with economic sustainability, and human well-being. Below are some of the organization’s ongoing restoration efforts for which the public is invited to get involved.

Arlington Wetlands in Pontoon Beach

HeartLands Conservancy held its annual MLK Day of Service at Arlington Wetlands on January 18, 2021. Volunteers collected litter at the site in preparation for a prescribed burn that will happen later in the season. This event was the kick-off for the organization’s Community Challenge Grant, awarded from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, which will offer $4,000 for site improvements once 400 volunteer hours are achieved. Monthly volunteer days are scheduled for the first Friday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m.

Poag Sand Prairie in Edwardsville

Over the past few years, Poag Sand Prairie has undergone a major transformation. Many invasive Siberian elm trees have been removed, and native plants are beginning to return to the site. On March 11, 2021, there was a volunteer day, followed by a “Frog Walk” with Dr. Richard Essner of SIUE. Monthly volunteer days are scheduled for the first Friday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m.

Signal Hill Outdoor Classroom in Belleville

The Signal Hill Outdoor Classroom will receive a 20 foot x 20 foot pavilion this spring thanks to the REALTOR® Association of Southwestern Illinois (RASI) and Phillips 66. In addition, the boardwalk across the old Peterson’s Pond will be complete for public use. Monthly volunteer days are scheduled for the first Friday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m.

Exploration Garden at Clinton Hills Conservation Park in Swansea

Last fall, four acres of grass at the Swansea Clinton Hills Conservation Park were removed to be converted into native wildflower habitat as part of the Swansea Exploration Garden, funded by the Illinois Clean Energy Community foundation. This year, the public will start noticing new growth on the site, although flowers will still be limited. In addition, the installation of a rain garden is being planned for later this spring - a project that is funded by Illinois American Water. Monthly volunteer days are scheduled for the first Friday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m. Now through Earth Day - Shop to Support Conservation in our Region! HeartLands Conservancy’s Home and Garden Spring Sale is going on now - online - through Earth Day (April 22)! This sale includes a large variety of native plants, grasses, shrubs and trees, and offers three Mother’s Day Mother Earth Gift Packages, rain barrels and composters. All proceeds from the sale help the organization maintain and restore more than 3,000 acres of natural areas and farms in southwestern Illinois. Plus, the plants in this sale support wildlife in your own backyard! Scan the QR code here to be directed right to the sale. Please visit heartlandsconservancy.org for more information about these events. For sponsorship and membership opportunities, please contact Kim at kim.obryan@heartlandsconservancy.org.

Make Way For New Award-Winning Garden Plants Of 2021

This annual flower, Zinnia hybrida var. Profusion Red Yellow Bicolor, blossoms with a bold red center surrounded by golden petals that is great for a hanging basket or edging.

A

fter a long winter thumbing through seed and plant catalogs for inspiration, March is the time when Illinois gardeners can finally start seeds for the spring garden.

But gardening starts long before the first seed is planted and planning is essential for both first-time, and experienced, gardeners. “Finding space for new plants that are suited for your USDA hardiness and having blossoms all year long can be a challenge,” said University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Bruce J. Black. “After mapping out your existing perennials, think about what new plants could be added to your landscape.” A reliable starting place is the list of All-America Selections, AAS. This independent non-profit organization has tested varieties annually since 1933 and an AAS Winners designation is considered the highest garden performance honor in the U.S. New, never-before-sold plant varieties are tested every year at trial sites around the United States and Canada. There are four trial locations in Illinois - three northern, and one central. Independent judges, who are professional horticulturists, volunteer to evaluate trial entries against comparison plants and the top performers are chosen as winners. For the best plants suited to Illinois, look for Great Lakes or National winners.

This year, there are six AAS winners and five are suited for Illinois - three vegetables and two flowers.

• Echalion, Creme Brulee (Allium cepa var. Creme Brulee): This is the first shallot to ever be awarded the AAS Winner designation. Grown from a seed, this is a sweet tender bulb that is easy to peel and matures earlier than other shallots with only 98 days to harvest. Regional Great Lakes Vegetable Winner. • Pepper, Pot-a-peno (Capsicum annuum var. Pot-a-peno): A compact, early maturing jalapeno perfect for containers. This green jalapeno changes to red for a sweet, spicy flavor. Time to mature is 45 to 50 days for green fruit and 60 to 65 days for red fruit. Regional Great Lakes Vegetable Winner. • Squash, Goldilocks (Cucurbita pepo var. Goldilocks): This acorn squash is vigorous, high-yielding and disease tolerant. Bright orange with a rich nutty flavor and uniform shape, it can be harvested in 70 to 85 days. National Vegetable Winner. • Celosia, Kelos® Candela Pink (Celosia spicata var. Candela Pink): Like a tapered candle with showy pink plumes that keep color all season, this annual is 25- to 30-inches tall. Feed and water regularly for continued beauty. Regional Great Lakes Flower Winner. • Zinnia, Profusion Red Yellow Bicolor (Zinnia hybrida var. Profusion Red Yellow Bicolor): This annual flower blossoms with a bold red center encircled by golden petals. As the season goes on, the colors soften into shades of apricot, salmon and rose. Compact at 8- to 14-inches tall and beautiful all season long. Great for a hanging basket or edging. Gold Medal Winner. “But don’t just stop with the 2021 winners,” Black said. “All-America Selections keeps a list of all past vegetables and flowers winners since its founding in 1933.” Their website, all-americaselections.org, is a great resource for helping to fill out landscapes and gardens with tested varieties that will last. Easter Honey Chocolate Pie from The Pooh Cook Book by Virginia H. Ellison By Lisa Adams, Publisher

T

wo of my favorite “collections” in life are an extensive number of books for kids and shelves full of cookbooks from all over the country. Those two collections came together a longggg time ago by way of “The Pooh Cook Book” inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh and “The House at Pooh Corner.” It’s full of fun recipes that are clearly meant for kids to get them in the kitchen, but they are also great for grown-ups. Of course every recipe has honey in it just for Pooh, and there are lots of cute little quotes from the Pooh gang along with the famed illustrations. I became pretty adept at Popovers for Piglet and a popular dessert in our household was this yummy Honey Chocolate Pie great for an Easter dinner,

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F • 1 9-inch pie shell, uncooked • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate • 1/4 cup butter (2 ounces) • 1 14-1/2 ounce can evaporated milk • 1/2 cup honey

1 cup sugar 3 Tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs, beaten 1/2 cup whipping cream

Purchase a ready-made pie shell or make your own. Line the pie pan with the pastry before starting the honey-chocolate mixture. Melt the chocolate and butter in the top of a double boiler. When melted, remove from the heat and blend in the evaporated milk, stirring all the time. In the mixing bowl, blend together the honey, sugar, cornstarch and salt. Then, beat in the eggs. Add this mixture to the chocolate mixture slowly, beating all the time. Pour this filling into the waiting pie shell. Bake the pie uncovered for 40 minutes. Then cover it lightly with aluminum foil and bake it 20 minutes more until the top is puffed. Cool for an hour and then refrigerate. Serve cold with whipped cream piled on top and drizzled with a thin trickle of honey beads over the whipped cream. Share with your own crew of family or friends. Enjoy!

For Your Health: Let’s Roll Up Our Sleeves To Fight COVID-19 By Dr. Graham A. Colditz, Siteman Cancer Center

C

oming up on a full year since the pandemic began to drastically impact lives, it’s wonderful to be able to greet spring with a feeling of optimism about the fight against coronavirus.

There are now three very effective vaccines that have been found to prevent COVID-19. There are two 2-dose vaccines that have around 95 percent protection against the illness, and the newest, a one-dose vaccine that has around 66 percent protection against moderate or severe illness, and that greatly protects against hospitalizations. Each of the vaccines has been rigorously studied in clinical trials that had more than 100,000 total participants, and more than 65 million shots have already been given across the United States. As that number increases, there should be a significant drop in infections and hospitalizations from their recent peaks earlier in winter. Over time, this likely means a welcome return of more normal everyday activities, even as many basic pandemic safety measures will remain important. “People should sign up and get the vaccine when it’s their turn,” said Dr. Marci Moore-Connelley, chief medical officer for Southern Illinois Healthcare. “The approved vaccines are safe, effective and our opportunity to turn the course of the pandemic.” Some minor side effects can be expected following a shot, which is a normal reaction to the vaccine. Serious side effects, though, are rare. Since vaccination began in the U.S., frequently reported reactions include a sore arm, fatigue, headache, muscle ache and chills. With the two-dose vaccines, these have more often followed the second dose than the first. But for all the vaccines, most side effects tend to go away within a day or so. With high demand and currently limited supplies, the vaccines are being rolled out in a prioritized order. The specific order of vaccination groups varies from state to state but generally gives priority to essential workers and those at increased risk from COVID-19. Groups such as health-care workers and

nursing home residents were typically vaccinated first. Younger, generally healthy people who aren’t part of any other priority group will generally be vaccinated after others. A quick web search or call to a local or state health department can help you find out which group you belong to and how to sign up for your turn to be vaccinated. Most appointments are scheduled online, and that can be a challenge for those who could use help with technology, Dr. Moore-Connelley said. “If that’s the case, don’t be shy about asking. Pick up the phone and call your doctor, health department or teenage grandchild. And if you’re good with computers, be sure to reach out to people you know who might need assistance.” “We’re all in this together,” she continued. “And that highlights one of the great benefits of getting vaccinated against COVID-19. It not only protects each of us individually from the disease, but it helps protect the health of our family, neighbors and community, as well. If we can keep the rates of infections and hospitalizations down overall, we all win.” Thinking about her own experience of rolling up her sleeve and getting the vaccine, Dr. Moore-Connelley shared the excitement of the moment and the promise it held. “Everyone was upbeat and happy to be there,” she said. “There was a real feeling of hope for the future.” Dr. Graham A. Colditz, associate director of prevention and control at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is an internationally recognized leader in cancer prevention. As an epidemiologist and public health expert, he has a long-standing interest in the preventable causes of chronic disease. Colditz has a medical degree from The University of Queensland and a master’s and doctoral degrees in public health from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastions of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specializes in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS? • • • • • • •

Problems with tracking Poor comprehension and attention span Loses place while reading Points to words while reading Avoids close work such as reading Reverses letters or words in reading and writing Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success.

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help.

For more information on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.

When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an“auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems. Does Your Child...

• Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Origami In The Garden Opens At The Missouri Botanical Garden On April 17

O

rigami in the Garden, a monumental sculpture exhibit, opens this April at the Missouri Botanical Garden.

Origami in the Garden is a custom traveling sculpture exhibition created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box that captures the delicate nature of the paper artform in museum-quality metals. The exhibition features Kevin Box’s own larger-than-life compositions as well as collaborations with world renowned origami artists Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse and Robert J. Lang. The monumental show features 18 large-scale installations that include flying birds, emerging butterflies, floating boats and soaring paper airplanes that will be placed throughout the Garden’s iconic locations. The crown jewel of the exhibition is Master Peace, a 25-foot sculpture that creates the illusion of 1,000 stainless steel origami peace cranes hovering above the water. The traveling exhibit has made previous appearances at other botanical gardens throughout the U.S. Kevin Box said “the natural and yet scientific setting of a botanical garden makes it the ideal setting for the exhibit that brings together art, science and nature to entertain, educate and inspire our senses in an outdoor setting.” Origami in the Garden begins its St. Louis stay on the weekend of April 17-18 and will be on display through October 10. The exhibit is included with Missouri Botanical Garden admission of $14 for adults and free for children ages 12 and under. St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission. Missouri Botanical Garden members visit for free. Membership is the best way to experience the Garden! Learn more about becoming a member at mobot.org/membership. The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in South St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit and from Interstate 64 at the Kingshighway North and South exit. Free parking is available on site and two blocks west at the corner of Shaw and Vandeventer. Marketplace Magazine | Early Spring Issue 2021 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 27
