Fischer Lumber Upgrading An Outdoor Space With A Deck Or Patio Fischer Lumber talks about the steps to take when deciding to build a deck or patio.

S

ummer has officially arrived and with it comes the perfect weather for outdoor family bonding. But, before taking the next family gathering outdoors, be sure there is the perfect space fit for relaxation. Before starting construction, it’s important to consider the space and how the deck or patio will be utilized plus the building area itself and future upkeep/maintenance. This will help determine whether the plan is to go the patio route or to build a new, spacious deck.

Let’s talk utilization.

Decks offer a lot more space compared to a patio. However, a patio offers a lot more privacy. To decide which means more, consider how the space will be utilized. For example, if the goal is to have a nice place to relax and catch some sun rays, a deck is the way to go.

Think about construction.

Before purchasing the materials to build a patio, make sure the ground is level. The perks of deck construction are that they are a lot easier to erect and they can be built on almost any land, level or not. The staff at Fischer Lumber highly suggests talking with a city official or HOA before starting construction: Some areas may require a permit.

Don’t forget to consider future upkeep and maintenance. The work doesn’t stop once construction is complete. Often overlooked, maintenance is important to consider. Keeping a new deck or patio in tip-top shape will require specific maintenance and upkeep. Routine deck

maintenance usually includes applying new stain and sealant, power washing and cleaning, repainting (if paint is used) and the occasional board replacement. Patios on the other hand are typically built out of stone or concrete. They will require different upkeep than that of a deck.

Don’t tackle the job alone. Talk to a professional.

Do not worry! The Fischer Lumber Team is prepared to help tackle a new deck construction project with their customers. Before beginning, talk with one of their team members. They will discuss functionality, look, budget and space to get started. Once the necessary information is gathered, the Fischer team can work with their client from start to finish. From the team of expert builders and designers to helping select the materials needed, Fischer Lumber can make sure the customer is equipped with the knowledge and material to get the job done. Visit Fischer Lumber at 210 N. Shamrock in East Alton, IL; (618) 259-7434; www.fischerlumber.com. Or visit the Fischer Window and Door Store at 2714 Mercantile Dr. in Brentwood, MO; (314) 647-5000; www.fischerwindow.com.

Buying A Home Is A Huge Decision And An Opportunity To Put Down Roots, And Build Equity By Tricia Tialdo, REALTOR, Broker, Strano & Associates

So how do you get ahead in today’s highly competitive market where multiple offers are normal and bidding wars are commonplace? The key is preparation. Here are some steps to help you prepare to buy a house: 1. Check your credit. Your credit will determine whether you are eligible for a mortgage and it influences your mortgage rate. The higher your score, the lower your rate. Free copies from each of the three major bureaus are available at AnnualCreditReport.com. 2. Determine how much house you can afford. Lenders use debt-to-income ratios to qualify borrowers but you need to create a personal budget to decide how much you will be comfortable spending on a mortgage payment. 3. Consult with a lender. In today’s housing market, the seller wants to have confidence that you will be able to purchase the house if you make an offer. That comes with providing a pre-approval letter. A mortgage professional can pull your credit report, decide on a pre-approval amount and help you choose a loan program that is right for you. 4. Save cash for a down payment and other expenses. It is important not to overlook the additional cash requirements – in

addition to the down payment – that are included in the home buying plans. These will include closing costs, prepaid expenses, utility adjustments and cash reserves. 5. Determine costs of homeownership. In addition to the monthly mortgage payment, other expenses that can be incurred by a homeowner are maintenance, upkeep and replacement of equipment and appliances, utilities and homeowner association fees. While you are in the process of buying a home, please do not change jobs, open new accounts, make any large purchases or move banks. Any significant changes in your credit report can impede your loan approval at any time. Like any big project, it is all about getting the details right from start to finish. The same is true for a successful home buying experience. Get everything together before you start house hunting.

Steve’s And Hoernis Auto Body Shops Merge Their Similar Businesses Steve’s Auto Body of O’Fallon is a long-time, family-owned collision repair center that has earned an impeccable reputation for great service and excellent work. Recently, the family announced that they have acquired Hoernis Auto Body, Inc. of Belleville, which also has been family-owned since the 1960’s with the same attention to quality and detail.

vehicles introduced to the market in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. More recently, the shop was the first in the area to adopt environmentally friendly water-based painting systems. Since 1982, the company has been led by James' son, Russ Hoernis, who has worked with his siblings, Deb Kruep and Steve Hoernis, to carry on the family tradition.

"This merger was an excellent opportunity for us to grow our brand while being able to carry on the great legacy of Hoernis Auto Body. We are excited to see both locations, and employees, continue to thrive,” said Jordan Beshears, vice president, Steve’s Auto Body. “The acquisition enhances our position as the premier, family-owned and operated collision repair centers in Southern Illinois.”

Steve’s Auto Body, founded in 1975, has been prominent in the O’Fallon landscape for decades. Owned and operated by the Beshears Family, Steve’s has emerged as the leader in collision repair in the Metro East. Steve’s longstanding commitment to superior quality, exceptional customer service and emphasis on training and innovative processes has set it apart from the competition.

The Hoernis family is equally as pleased and said, “We are also very happy about the acquisition of our company by Steve’s Auto Body and know that the customer experience at the Belleville facility will be enhanced while implementing the latest innovations in repair processing."

About Hoernis Auto Body, Inc.

Hoernis Auto Body was founded in 1964 by James L. Hoernis. Long known for high-quality work and outstanding customer service, Hoernis has grown to become the oldest and most respected collision repair center in Belleville. The business has always kept up with current technology in automotive design and repair methodologies. In fact, it was one of the first collision repair centers in the area to have the ability to repair the “Unibody” type

About Steve’s Auto Body

Faster repair times, top-tier customer service scores and competitive pricing allows Steve’s to provide its customers, insurance partners and dealership partners an experience that places it at the top of the industry. Steve’s acquisition of Hoernis will allow it to continue this mission. “There is such a positive vibe with this merger,” said Mike Beshears, president of Steve’s Auto Body. “The ‘bones’ of our two businesses are the same; our core values are similar. We will always be able to offer that 'hometown' experience.” The Belleville location is at 207 South 20th Street, (618) 234-6538, and O’Fallon, 120 Behrens Drive, (618) 632-2575. The web site for both is www.stevesautobody.com. The two shops are open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Jacob (Jake) and his eldest son, James Jr. (Bud), co-founded the Jacob Co. when the two of them realized that “if we run a home improvement company on two simple principles we can be very successful: First, we have to really ‘care’ for our customers and listen to their wishes and second, we must simply do what we say we are going to do.” Father and son quickly set their plan into motion and became known as the largest wholesale seamless guttering company in the St Louis Metro region running as many as 10 seamless guttering trucks a day. This changed when Bud Jacob decided to leave the company to pursue other interests. He sold his share to his father in 1994 and his younger brother, Scott Jacob, took the reins as President of Jacob. Scott Jacob had plans of his own and took the company in a different direction. His vision was to change Jacob from the wholesale sub-contract side of the industry to the retail side and compete against the larger remodeling companies in the region. This move created a new face for the company and by the year 2000, Jacob had solidified itself as an innovative leader in the home improvement industry with national recognition as an elite remodeler in several product lines.

The company endured a difficult change in 2001 when Jake passed away after a long battle with cancer. He left behind a family business that to this day still believes in the values they started with in 1977. In 2006, Bud came back to Jacob full time. Bud’s return gave his brother, Scott, the time needed to work on growing the company. Scott looked at various products and ideas before finding the right fit and Jacob Showers and Baths was created as a division of Jacob. After the bath division success, the two brothers decided to take another direction: “Growth by acquisition!” They wanted to find and purchase a company that fit the Jacob model of a family atmosphere, longevity, quality of products and reputation with solid financial stability. The perfect fit came along when he met with Tom Chesley of Chesley Fence. So in 2013, Scott and Bud Jacob purchased Chesley Fence owned by Tom and Patty Chesley for 47 years – the two still work with Chesley Fence and Deck. The second acquisition in 2015 was an asset purchase of Daech and Bauer Roofing and Remodeling. Most recently, the second showroom was opened in Fenton at 1707 Gilsinn Road in 2020.

Jacob is still locally family owned and operated. They specialize in home improvements such as windows, replacement bathtubs, walk in showers, walk in bathtubs, sunrooms and more! Dry Eye Disease Is a Common, Treatable Condition

D • • • • • • • • • • •

ry Eyes are a part of the natural aging process. In fact, the majority of people over the age of 65 experience symptoms of Dry Eye. Patients are advised to seek treatment if they have any of the symptoms below: Blurry Vision Redness Burning Itching Light Sensitivity Excessive Tearing/Watery Eyes Tired Eyes/Eye Fatigue Stringy Mucus in or around the eyes Foreign Body Sensation Contact Lens Discomfort Scratchy feeling or Sand/Grit in eye

People that have Dry Eye Disease either do not produce enough tears or their tears are of such poor quality that they cannot lubricate and nourish the eye effectively. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front of the surface of the eye and for providing clear vision.

Tears also provide lubrication, which reduces the risk of eye infection, washes away foreign matter in the eye and keeps the eyes smooth and clear. Dry Eye Disease can easily interfere with work and normal life activities if not treated. Factors that lead to Dry Eye Disease can include age, medications, refractive eye surgery, long-term use of contact lenses and medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems and inflammation of the eyelids. Other factors can also be associated with doing every day tasks like staring at computer screens, televisions, or electronic readers for long periods of time. In addition, things like exposure to air conditioning, wind, smoke and dry climates contribute to Dry Eye. Untreated Dry Eye Disease can lead to permanent damage to the lids, eye and vision. However, the good news is that by properly diagnosing the type of Dry Eye Disease early on there are successful treatments including supplements, warm compresses, lid cleansers, drops and now a natural Intense Pulse Light therapy. Drs. Thomas and Alice Unger in Troy and Edwardsville have the technology to provide patients with a comprehensive eye exam to evaluate, test and treat Dry Eye Disease. Call Unger Eye Care today to make an appointment at (618) 667-2020 or (618) 655-EYES.

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastions of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specializes in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

The Top 5 Reasons Your Child Needs An Eye Exam impede learning can be corrected – once they are detected,” shared Dr. Thomas Unger, an optometrist with an office in Troy.

Please take a moment to review the signs that indicate vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential

ummer is finally here. As your family calendar becomes full of summer events and you start to schedule those Back to School appointments for your child’s upcoming school year, are you sure you haven’t forgotten something important?

Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist.

For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 655-EYES (3937) or visit the web site at readingandvision.com.

What about your child’s eyes? Vision problems can affect more than just seeing the board or reading a book. Research has shown that vision problems can: 1. interfere with academic performance 2. slow down overall development 3. cause a short attention span 4. make reading difficult 5. result in lowered self-esteem It’s usually pretty easy to tell when your child has difficulty seeing things in the distance (such as the board in school), but most parents don’t know what to look for to determine when a child has difficulty seeing the words in a book. There are so many potential explanations for why a child struggles with reading that parents often lose sight of the obvious. Many parents mistakenly assume that the vision screenings are the same as a complete eye examination, and incorrectly assume that their child’s vision is fine when they pass the screening. According to the American Optometric Association, approximately one out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems; and three out of five children with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems. “Whether your child is a bright underachiever, struggles with reading or has developmental delays, the good news is the majority of vision problems that
