Ugly Concrete? Don’t Tear It Out - Resurface! For residential and commercial flooring, St. Louis Resurfacing presents the Epoxy Paint Chip Flooring System that combines an attractive appearance with impressive durability. Its benefits include many colors, low maintenance and the fact that it is stain and chemical resistant.

S

t. Louis Resurfacing, Inc. has long been considered the pioneering leader throughout the Midwest in resurfacing. Family owned and operated, Fred and Cindy Wolf founded the company in 1990 with a mission to always install the highest-quality decorative concrete resurfacing installations possible. “We are considered the company of record in the Midwest for the installation of the Pebblestone Epoxy System,” said Fred Wolf. “I would say we have applied this popular system to literally thousands of residential and commercial jobs throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.”

Shawn Wolf, Senior Crew Chief, has a degree in marketing from the University of Missouri State. After finishing college, he decided to take part in the family business and works hard to maintain the highest possible quality in producing the finest decorative concrete resurfacing installations in the Midwest. Fully bonded and insured, St. Louis Resurfacing, Inc. does not subcontract its work. Employees of the company perform all jobs. Please call St. Louis Resurfacing, Inc. at (800) 2836234 or (314) 576-9220 to request a free estimate. Also visit www.stlresurfacing.com.

The Pebblestone Epoxy System is applied directly over existing patios, driveways, pool decks, front porches and walkways, garage floors, basement floors, and commercial entranceways. Most applications take only one day and can often be used the next day. “Don’t spend the time and money to tear out existing concrete. The Pebblestone Epoxy System is a durable, quick way to restore your concrete surface, and totally transform ugly concrete into something beautiful,” Wolf said. In addition, the flooring system is stain, chemical, salt and crack resistant.

your air conditioner’s best friend is a SPENGLER PRECISION TUNE-UP The Best Way to Guarantee Efficient, Reliable, Worry Free Air Conditioning. If you own a car you probably don’t think twice about taking it into the shop for periodic tune-ups. After all, everybody wants a smooth enjoyable ride and nobody wants to experience unexpected breakdowns. Common-sense tells you that the best way to keep your car performing at its best is to schedule regular maintenance.

Cooling & H ea Solution Spe ting cialist

The same applies to your air conditioning. Like your car, your air conditioner is a hard-working machine. It generates a lot of heat and has many moveable parts. It requires fluids and lubricants. Air conditioners are exposed to the elements, they collect dust and dirt and are subject to immeasurable wear and tear. In order to keep your air conditioning system working at its most efficient and economical, you should give it regular tune-ups and maintenance. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t do so. In a recent survey, over 55% of air conditioning owners do not schedule regular tune-ups for their air conditioning systems and units. Not coincidentally, over half of all A/C users express dissatisfaction with the performance of their air conditioner and its cost to operate. Furthermore, service records show that most major and costly air conditioning repairs could have been prevented or detected early with a simple annual tune-up. Plus studies show, when you’re A/C unit is performing at its best it will lead to lower utility bills by up to 30%! By tuning up your air conditioner, you greatly increase the chances that your A/C technician will catch small problems before they become big ones. Repairing a small refrigerant leak that’s caught during a tune-up shouldn’t cost much more than the service call itself. On the other hand, buying a new compressor when low refrigerant levels burn your current one out, however, can cost a thousand dollars or more. What would you rather pay for — an ounce of prevention now or a pound of cure later? Precision tune-ups ensure that your A/C unit is working at optimal efficiency. When your A/C is running well, it uses less energy to cool your home. Lower energy use means bigger savings for you on your monthly utility bills. Bottom Line: An air conditioner tune-up will save you lots of money in both the long and short term…and provide you with a worry free summer! There’s no doubt about it: a precision tune-up for your air conditioner is the simplest and best thing you can do to guarantee that your air conditioner will keep you comfortable all summer long and your best assurance that small problems don’t develop into bigger, more expensive headaches later on.

Business Profiles 4 Pines Firearms Offers Local, Professional Training

O

n July 9, 2013, the Firearm Concealed Carry Act became an Illinois state law. This law requires an Illinois Concealed Carry License to carry a concealed firearm in Illinois. To receive the license, one must pass a 16-hour training course with an approved firearms instructor. Fortunately, Tom Martindale, owner of 4 Pines Firearms in Millstadt, is providing this course and others such as one-on-one firearm training, first-time enthusiasts and women’s self-defense instruction. Utah and Florida non-resident training is available as well.

Martindale enjoys being involved in the community. He is a member of the Millstadt Chamber of Commerce and the National Shooting Sports Foundation. 4 Pines Firearms works with local organizations to help their fund raising efforts. They are a sponsor of The Belleville Quail Club "Gun of the Month" Raffle and the annual Millstadt Police Department's D.A.R.E. / Backstoppers 5K run. The business has also worked with Smithton Sportsmen's Club, Hecker Fire Department and the O'Fallon Moose. “Just this January, we purchased a new K-9 for the Millstadt Police Department,” he said. “Ace is a Belgian Shepard and attended the K-9 Academy in April,” he said. “Other civic groups and individuals have donated to Ace’s training – we all believe he will be a valuable asset to the community.”

“We have training instructors available, including myself, who are highly qualified with official certification through various professional organizations like the Southern Illinois Police Academy, SILEC and the NRA,” he said. “I can accommodate anyone’s schedule offering evening and weekend classes. With a classroom on the premises and various ranges in the area to utilize, I am proud to say we have taught over 400 people so far!” Family-owned and operated, 4 Pines Firearms is also a full-line gun shop and there is a certified gunsmith onsite during business hours. Hunting and fishing licenses are available as well.

Layer by Layer: Revealing Brighter, Healthier Skin with Chemical Peels Submitted by Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness

A

s we age, our natural exfoliation process, otherwise known as sloughing, slows down. This causes our skin to look dull and less radiant. Chemical peels have the unique ability to effectively exfoliate dead, dull layers of skin, in addition to providing a variety of other skin enhancing benefits.

Chemical peels are the ultimate multi-tasking skin care treatment – and quite popular! In fact, nearly 444,000 women and men received chemical peels in 2013 (smartbeautyguide.com). Chemical peels are known for their anti-aging benefits of reducing fine lines and rejuvenating the skin. Additionally, a peel will help retexture skin imperfections like scarring and sun damage. Patients who experience inflammation, acne and black heads will also benefit from a chemical peel treatment. Some patients choose to get peels as a preventative measure or to simply refresh the skin. Treatments can be done on the face, décolleté, back, hands and other body parts. Medical-grade chemical peels performed in a physician’s office contain active ingredients at a concentration higher than over-the-counter cosmetic peels. It is always advised that this type of procedure be performed by a Skin-Care Specialist. Always follow the post-treatment instructions, refrain from sun exposure and discontinue the use of any skin irritating products like Retinoids, or other exfoliating treatments as instructed. Downtime can range from mild flaking and dryness to three to five days of peeling, depending on the strength of the chemical peel solution. Actual flaking begins 24 to 36 hours after the treatment. During the flaking process, skin may appear more pink than usual, but is easily covered with makeup. Patients can return to work and continue most activities immediately following a treatment. The appropriate chemical peel and strength are determined by your Skin-Care Specialist. Although some patients may notice a change in their skin after one treatment, a series of treatments (approximately three to six) is typically recommended. Other exfoliating treatments such as microdermabrasion and dermaplaning can be used interchangeably, or in addition to a chemical peel for a more aggressive treatment. Patients will also notice their home care products work much better once that dead, top layer of skin has been removed by the peel. Chemical peels are a quick, in-office procedure that offers multiple benefits. Make them a part of your pre-summer preparation and get glowing skin.

As your family calendar becomes full of summer events and you start to schedule those Back to School appointments for your child’s upcoming school year, are you sure you haven’t forgotten something important? What about your child’s eyes? Vision problems can affect more than just seeing the board or reading a book. Research has shown that vision problems can: 1. interfere with academic performance 2. slow down overall development 3. cause a short attention span 4. make reading difficult 5. result in lowered self-esteem

Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. Please take the time to learn more about the vital role vision plays in your child’s academic performance, it could make all the difference. For more information or to schedule an appointment, Dr. Unger can be reached at: (618) 667-2020.

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading? • Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

It’s usually pretty easy to tell when your child has difficulty seeing things in the distance (such as the board in school), but most parents don’t know what to look for to determine when a child has difficulty seeing the words in a book. There are so many potential explanations for why a child struggles with reading that parents often lose sight of the obvious. Many parents mistakenly assume that the vision screenings are the same as a complete eye examination, and incorrectly assume that their child’s vision is fine when they pass the screening. According to the American Optometric Association, approximately one out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems; and three out of five children with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems. “Whether your child is a bright underachiever, struggles with reading or has developmental delays, the good news is the majority of vision problems that

problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a

ers – “It’s not heavy at all. In fact, it just feels like air,” Edwards said. “Because it doesn’t wear off, you must carefully wash it off with cleanser, or make up remover.”

It is no wonder that this beauty salon service has been growing rapidly across the world as clients see the benefits in not worrying about makeup rubbing off or having to reapply for up to 20 hours.

Application for full makeup only requires about 45 minutes – the foundation itself only takes 15 minutes. “And we custom blend the colors for a perfect match. Currently we are offering the foundation and the cheek color in the airbrush format. We plan to add eye color as well.”

ealthy, glowing skin is a key wedding trend this year and one of the best ways to accomplish this is through airbrush makeup. In fact, the most important part of your weddingday beauty regimen is for your beautiful skin to go gracefully from day to night.

Elite Retreat is happy to do the entire wedding party as well. “We can even do hair design while applying the makeup,” Edwards said. “That saves a bunch of time.”

“The advantages of airbrush makeup is that it is waterproof, sweat proof, makes pores vanish and gives a flawless finish,” said Billie Jo Edwards, owner of Elite Retreat in Belleville. “The bride and her party will not have to touch up during the big day and it completely solves the problem of looking beautiful all night long. Tears won’t even streak!”

Christian HomeCare Services, Inc. Helping People Maintain Their Independence In Their Own Homes

C

hristian HomeCare Services, Inc. fills the gaps in non-medical, in-home care services to aging adults who want to remain independent in their own homes and feel in control of their own lives, including navigating the complicated web of federal and state assistance programs. The agency is a literal lifeline for families with older adults by providing support and peace of mind knowing meals are being prepared; there is transportation to doctors' appointments; and insurance is being understood. “Maybe it's your mother, father, aunt, uncle, brother, sister or neighbor who needs extra help,” Jennifer Barbour, Community Outreach Director, said. “We can be those extra eyes and ears, and help with something as simple as companionship up to bathing, cooking, laundry, transportation to and from doctor’s visits, whatever the client needs.” Christian HomeCare Services, Inc. believes that with aging comes a widespread fear of losing independence, identity and self-worth. Recognition and encouragement of the value and usefulness of aging people is absolutely critical to the function of the entire community. “Currently, we have a client with dementia whose husband was perfectly capable of caring for her, but sadly he passed away unexpectedly,” Barbour said. “Their kids have busy families of their own yet they were all taking turns caring for their mother. It just became too difficult so we stepped in to help out. It’s interesting, too, that

sometimes a parent is more open to receiving help from outside sources rather than their kids: they don’t want to impose.” Through the Answers on Aging staff, nearly 6,000 calls are taken from older adults needing help with insurance and prescriptions, food stamps, social security, referrals to community resources, etc. “We become an advocate for people who need assistance doing these things so they can save money, thus, stay in their own home,” Barbour said. Christian HomeCare Services, Inc. could use volunteers to assist in many different ways: drivers, in-home companions and/or caregivers. “Basically we are looking for people to give two to three hours per visit up to however many times per week or even just per month,” Barbour said. “The number of times is all up to the volunteer. Teachers, retired folks, stay-at-home moms who want something to do while the kids are at school…” Throughout the year, Christian HomeCare Services, Inc. has various fundraisers including the delicious All Things Chocolate in September at Hidden Lake Winery. “The whole room is filled with chocolate vendors offering samples and treats,” she said. “Even though it’s casual, we have a DJ, and a silent and live auction.” The event is from noon to 4 p.m. Keep an eye on the Marketplace calendar for the exact date. For more information on how CHCS, Inc. can benefit YOUR family and to learn how to volunteer, call (618) 537-9590 and visit www.chcsinc.org.

People who haven’t used Christian HomeCare Services, Inc. think their primary service is to the individual being supported, but the often unspoken service is to those who get a few hours of relief after years of heavy responsibility. One such case involved a husband and wife, Bill and Faye. Married for over 50 years, Faye had been living with Alzheimer’s for seven years. The responsibility of Faye’s care fell to Bill who dressed her nicely and fixed her hair every day. He even made sure coordinating jewelry was in place. Everything he did, she mirrored it: If he stood up, she stood up. If he left the room, she followed him or went to find him a short time later. She followed him through grocery stores and while he did the laundry. Bill had tried adult day programs, but Faye was so distraught that he couldn't leave her. He thought that maybe having a caregiver to the house would help her be more comfortable being without him for just a couple of hours. He just wanted two hours of respite a week, or someone to come if he had a doctor's appointment to attend. The day came when two caregivers came to the house for just two hours per weeks so Bill could take a walk, go fishing, visit friends, etc. Faye passed away shortly thereafter. Because of Christian HomeCare’s services, she could live in her home until the end with her devoted spouse who was able to have his own time to enjoy while honoring his marriage and his commitment to his wife.

Located behind Dillard’s at St. Clair Square Mall, Midwest WingFest will be bigger and better than ever. Although it is a dedicated wing festival, participants can expect food items ranging from pulled pork to chili dogs to just about anything you can dream of. WingFest is an ALL OUT food and entertainment festival. The two goals of the festival have always been to 1. Bring people to Fairview Heights and 2. To raise money for disabled vets. All proceeds raised on the www.midwestwingfest.com web site go directly to support a local vet. Currently, the festival is seeking vendors, volunteers and sponsors. Folks interested in the 5 Chicken Fun Run can sign up by August 15 to get the Midwest WingFest T-shirt! Go to the web site to read all the details and get registered today! Also – do you have what it takes to down the most wings? Then enter the Wing Eating Contest in one of three categories: Men’s, Open or Teen (ages 12 to 18 with a signed permission slip from a parent). Registration fee is $15 for adults; $10 for teens. Visit the web site for more information. As a vendor, you can help raise money for a charitable cause, have your business name recognized by thousands of people and help support disabled veterans. Sign up on the web site. Volunteers are always needed at such a large event as WingFest. There are many opportunities to lend a hand starting today or at the event itself. Email Info@midwestwingfest.com for more information. Of course there is always great music and this year will be no exception with Gentleman Bandits, Jeremiah Johnson Band and many others. On-air personality Derrick Keith of WIL 92.3 will be at WingFest both Friday and Saturday nights as well. WingFest is from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday, August 29 and noon to midnight on Saturday, August 30. www.midwestwingfest.com.
