Dennis Schutzenhofer

W

ell-loved and recognized by many including graduates of Belleville West and Belleville East from 1973 to 2006, Dennis Schutzenhofer – affectionately known as Schutzy to his buddies – rarely goes anywhere without seeing a friend from his illustrious career as chemistry teacher, coach and two-time World Series Champion batting practice pitcher.

“Mr. Schutzenhofer” as his former students still call him, graduated from the last class of Belleville Township High School - before splitting into West and East - in 1967 where he was a stand-out athlete and student.

“I was a little shy and athletics really brought me out of my shell,” he said. “I found I had a passion for it because it was something I was good at. Lloyd Elmore and Boots Budde were my baseball coaches - they had a great influence on me and really helped build my self esteem.”

After graduating from SIUE with a BS and MS in chemistry, he landed his first job right back at Belleville West/District 201. “It was a dream job,” he said. “I was so happy.”

“Every step of my life has been ‘in the right place at the right time,’” he said, clearly loving his roles as teacher, coach and father. Oh yes, in his spare time he has been refereeing Division III basketball and a “sprinkling of high school” games for 33 years.

He spent 20 years at West where he was a chemistry/physical science teacher and a coach of the baseball and basketball teams. Then in 1991 he moved over to Belleville East where he was head baseball coach for the next 15 years retiring in 2006. At East he had the opportunity to coach some terrific athletes including Chicago Cubs pitcher Randy Wells, Jim Pecararo, Nathan Hodel, Brandon Musso, Dante Brinkley and Andy Schutzenhofer.

But it was in 2001 when he heard about an opening with the Cardinals as a batting practice pitcher. He knew Dave McKay through a mutual friend and “I managed to work my way in for a tryout. I arrived at the stadium and got lost trying to find my way, but Jim Edmonds found me and led me to the field,” he laughed.

“You try not to be awestruck when you’re near these guys – celebrities hate that – just be normal.”

But the two best things about coaching at East was the chance to coach his own sons Doug and Andy. Andy went on to the University of Illinois where he was named an All-American and played for five years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Doug was also an excellent athlete who played college baseball as well.

Cardinals coaches didn’t waste time seeing his “stuff:” his first group included Fernando Vina and J.D. Drew – two of his favorites – plus Edgar Renteria and Placido Polanco. “It was a cold, rainy day and I was having trouble getting loose,” he recalled. “My first ball was in the dirt!”

He must have relaxed because he passed “the audition” and has been working there ever since enjoying three World Series including two championships and the opportunity to throw batting practice to members of the American League All-Star team for three days in 2009. In fact, when this story was being written he received the call from new Cardinal manager Mike Matheny that he’s on again as BP pitcher for the 11th year!

There are actually three guys who pitch batting practice including Schutzenhofer, Larry Frank and Darin Hendrickson. “You don’t have to be there everyday, but last year I pitched every game home and away - from spring training through the season, playoffs and the entire World Series,” he said. “I traveled with the team on the same plane and stayed in the same hotels.”

Before each game, the home team takes the field first about 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. and four or five groups of batters take practice. This year Schutzenhofer enjoyed pitching to World Series MVP David Freese, Jon Jay, Raphael Furcal and Ryan Theriot. Each batter gets 22 or 23 pitches.

Plus – Schutzenhofer warms up every pinch hitter in the batting cages before coming up to bat. “I probably throw 150 pitches per night.”

His favorite stadiums are the newly constructed designs with batting cages including TVs so they know what’s happening in the game. While he still enjoys visiting the older parks like Wrigley Field and Fenway Park – they do not have the same modern conveniences.

A fan of Tony LaRussa, he said, “I thought it was pretty shocking that Tony retired just 35 wins away from tying second place on the all-time managerial wins list,” he said. “That just proves, though, that he was in it for the love of the game and not for the stats and records.”

The lineup every night could be a surprise, too. “Tony always played the percentages depending on who was the opposing pitcher and what batter had better numbers against him," Schutzenhofer said. He was very professional

and expected the players to be the same way. After a game, “you would never know if they had just won or lost a game. It was all business and looking toward the next game.”

One thing he thought really added to the run at the Series was the addition of Octavio Dotel and Rafael Furcal. “Those two provided much-needed energy before, during and after the games,” he said.

And now the new season is upon us and Feb. 15 cannot come soon enough as Schutzenhofer packs his suntan lotion and heads to spring training in Jupiter, Fla. “This year is going to be fabulous! We have so much flexibility in the lineup,” he said. “I know Cardinal fans will be very happy!”

Though he has participated in two World Series wins, he will, for the first time, receive his own World Series Championship ring in a pre-game ceremony on Opening Day at 2:15 p.m., Friday, April 13 against the Chicago Cubs. “I can’t wait to see that ring,” he smiled. “Right place, right time!”

Dr. Kimberly Sanford

The newest doctor at Maryville Women’s Center, Dr. Kimberly Sanford, is not only someone who knows she found her calling, but someone who applied the definition of tenacity to her life and made it happen.

“I skip to my job every day because I know I found my calling,” she said. “Not everybody gets that opportunity.”

Growing up in East St. Louis, Dr. Sanford began a journey at the age of 16 that has practically taken her coast to coast and even though Arizona is “good for my soul,” she has found herself right back here in the Metro East where she is happy to have “come home.”

When she was 16, she and her family set a goal for her to go Michigan State University in Lansing, Mich. where her brother was living and working at the time. So she moved to Lansing and finished high school at East Lansing to establish residency. But something wonderful happened - Dr. Sanford won a full athletic scholarship to Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., for her outstanding shot put talent.

At Lincoln she earned her bachelor’s degree in agriculture and quickly found a lucrative job selling veterinary pharmaceuticals for Upjohn.

“But all the people at Upjohn who had been with the company for their entire careers warned me about a bleak future,” she said. “So I played the ‘survival’ game there for seven years:” four years in Rhode Island and three in Minnesota where her territory tripled and she lived out of a suitcase only going home on weekends to do her laundry. “That got old real quick.”

“By this time I was 26 and I had already figured out back in Rhode Island at 22 that sales were not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and I really wanted to get into human medicine,” she said. While in Rhode Island she “commuted” to Harvard – yes, the Harvard – taking some night-school pre-requisites for medical school. “By then I was about 28 and had a ‘come-to-Jesus’ meeting with myself. I thought I have no kids, no husband and if I have to turn 40 someday I may as well be a doctor!”

Her brother, who had grown weary of the winters and moved to Tampa Bay, said “come live with me, go to school and all you have to worry about is taking care of yourself,” she said. “So I cashed in my 401K, paid off my debts, bought a pickup and headed to Tampa.” After establishing residency she “hit the ground running in 2000.

While her goal had been to move out west, she had interviewed at Maryville Women’s Center with Dr. Tina Gingrich whom she found to be not only a great physician and mentor but she realized “when you first come out of residency you don’t get someone as nice as Dr. Gingrich,” she laughed. “She made me a wonderful, well-rounded offer and I couldn’t be happier to be back home.”

ustom Marble in Millstadt is truly a family affair as founders Sandy and Larry Kraft have now welcomed their daughter, Laura Schmidt, and son, Matt Kraft, into the business.

Larry Kraft, who incidentally has had the same phone number his entire life, was teaching agriculture in 1978 at Columbia High School during a time when budget cuts were making things a little stressful for teachers. The brother of his then-partner suggested “we take a look at this new product called cultured marble,” Kraft said.
