WALMOORE HOLSTEINS, Cochranville, PA Walt and Ellen Moore 850 cows with SCC 115 to 129,000 RHA above 28,000 lbs; currently 95 lbs/cow/day Charlene Dickens grew up at Mowrey Spruce Lawn Farm in Jefferson County, Pa. After graduating from Delaware Valley College 10 years ago, she started fulltime at Walmoore Holsteins in Chester County.

For the past 7 years, she has served as herd manager.

“We use Udder Comfort™ on all mastitis cows, I like it that much. We’ve tried other brands, but I don’t feel they do as much as good,” says Charlene Dickens, herd manager at Walmoore Holsteins, Cochranville, Pa. The Centennial farm is home to Walt and Ellen Moore’s 850-cow dairy. Production is currently at 95 lbs/cow/day. SCC is 129,000 and was as low as 115,000 over winter. The Center for Dairy Excellence recognized Walt and his father Bill as Pennsylvania Pacesetters at the 2013 Dairy Summit.

“Udder Comfort has been part of our routine for 3 years,” Charlene reports. “It contributes to improved milk quality and pounds of milk shipped. What we do in the parlor drives that, along with the barn flush and clean sand.

“We also keep track. When we get our DHIA report, I pull cows contributing more than 3% to the Bulk Tank SCC to check quarters.

Applying Udder Comfort to affected quarters has helped reduce treatment days.

“Cows are back in the milking stream faster, so we lowered our treatment costs and ship more milk from the dairy. Our employees see the value and like the blue identifying color.

“The big thing I see is how this helps cows overcome the toxicity of certain types of mastitis by keeping the udder soft while the cow fights infection. It also softens edema in fresh cows to get them going.”
