World Dairy Expo to celebrate 50 years Olson highlights what’s new for 2016

With nearly half a century of experiences, a premier dairy show will have plenty of ways for attendees to walk down memory lane.

World Dairy Expo will celebrate its 50th anniversary during the veday event Oct. 4-8 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. “The 50th anniversary will be a celebration of the journey from a small World Food Expo in 1967, to the internationally renowned show of today,” said Kristin Olson, World Dairy Expo Media Relations Manager. “We will look back at 50 years of history and the people whose passion and dedication helped build the show from the ground up.”

An opening ceremony with a surprise reveal will kick off Expo’s 50th anniversary, appropriately themed Celebrate 50! The ceremony will be at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct.

at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the Exhibition Hall. This free event, hosted by World Dairy Expo, is open to all.

“The 50th anniversary open house will be a wonderful opportunity for people to gather and exchange memories while enjoying a night of food, fun and entertainment,” Olson said.

For those looking to bring a slice of history home, a limited edition commemorative book called, We Need a Show, and a 50th anniversary print painted by Larry Schultz of Sunny Beach Farm Studio will be for sale at the Purple Cow gift shop and the West Lobby of the Coliseum.

Aside from the anniversary happenings, the 2016 World Dairy Expo will have an array of new opportunities – further enhancing the attendee experience.

New this year is an Expo Family Lounge, which will offer families with small children an area to rest and re-charge. Sponsored by Dairy Girl Network, this lounge is located

on the second oor of the Exhibition Hall and must be accessed via the elevator near the information desk in the lobby.

“The Expo Family Lounge will feature many amenities including a changing area, comfortable seating and privacy screens,” Olson said. “We are excited to have this new space for our youngest fans and their families.”

A new social gathering, Expo in the Evening, will be from 8-11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 in the Estrumate Sale Pavilion. Attendees will enjoy refreshments and live music by local band, Wheelhouse.

“One of the early Expo traditions was a square dancing competition on the Coliseum oor,” Olson said. “We are excited to provide this ‘throwback element’ for Friday night’s attendees.”

With more than 2,500 head of cattle on display and more than 850 participating companies taking part in the world-renown Expo Trade Show – in addition to seminars, virtual farm tours, and Golden Anniversary celebrations – World Dairy Expo is a must-attend event.

Cow comfort leads the way to milk, quality genetics

Kellers to showcase their dairy during virtual tour

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. – Internationally known for milk production, genetics and longevity, Kellercrest Holsteins near Mt. Horeb, Wis., is home to happy, healthy cows.

“We farm with the philosophy, ‘when you take care of the cows, they will take care of you,’” said Tim Keller, co-owner of the 326-cow dairy

farm with his wife, Sandy, and brother, Mark.

This philosophy has been a main driving force behind expanding their herd and facilities over the past 15 years.

They have gone from a small tiestall barn to the latest and greatest dairy barns with management practices to match.

comfort,” Tim said. “We have never shied away from building a barn or doing something different to better the animal’s health.”

Cow comfort will be one of the topics discussed during their virtual tour at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the Mendota 1 meeting room in the Exhibition Hall.

“We look forward to speaking at World Dairy Expo,” Tim said. “We take great pride in treating our cows well and we

really try to do the best job possible in all aspects of our farm.”

Tim remembers cow comfort rst improving back in 1999 when the cows moved from the tiestall barn to their newly built sand-bedded freestall barn.

“It was a night and day difference. The cows went from being all banged up to running around,” Tim said. “Funny thing is, we had actually remodeled our tiestall barn six

years prior. We installed mats and made the stalls bigger but it wasn’t making our cows comfortable.”

Tim is quick to point out that even though the barn was initially wonderful, they had to gut it four years later.

“We found that we needed larger, wider stalls,” Tim said.

“The stalls on the mature side changed to 50 inches wide by 68 inches long and the stalls in the younger group stayed at 46 inches wide but changed to 68 Turn to KELLERS | Page 5

The 244 stalls have pack mats under the sand, which help keep a consistent slope. Fans, sprinklers and cow brushes make the barn a comfortable environment year round.

The Keller family built a new heifer shed in 2004 followed by a Cozy Calf Care Center in 2009. The calf barn features 52 stalls, each with its own drain tile to keep bedding dry. In 2010, the Kellers added a new transition barn featuring 20 stalls.

“The transition barn really made a big difference.

We went from having four to ve DA’s a month to having less than one per month,” Tim said. “Milk production also went up 1,200 pounds per cow. The barn pretty much paid for itself within two years.”

The cows are making their presence known as they sport a rolling herd average of 31,974 pounds of milk with 4.1 percent fat and 3.1 percent protein.

Their somatic cell count is 122,000.

Also known for lifetime production, Kellercrest has 101 cows with more than 200,000 pounds of lifetime milk, 35 cows above 250,000 pounds and 10 cows topping 300,000 pounds. Since 2014, they have had nine National Elite Production Cows.

“Lifetime production is huge for us. It is a reection on our genetics and how well we take care of our cows,” Tim said. “It’s very rewarding to see a cow milk alongside her great, great granddam. We once had a cow milk until she was 18 years old.”

Genetics run with great importance at Kellercrest.

They have sent more than 100 bulls to A.I. studs and have exported embryos to Japan, Germany, Australia and France. They also exhibit their cattle at local, state and national shows. Most recently, Tim and Sandy’s daughter, Kim, exhibited the winning winter yearling, Kellercrest Mont Lisbeth-ET, at the Wisconsin State Fair.

“That was a very proud moment for us,” Tim said.

“We have always been very good at milk production but we also love to show. It proves that you can have the best of both worlds.”

When selecting sires for their breeding program, their rst protocol is type followed by a very strong inuence for milk production.

The Kellers have won 16 Progressive Genetics Herd awards and 14 Progressive Breeders’ Registry awards. They have developed 41 Gold Medal Dams and 22 Dams of Merits. Their favorite cow, Kellercrest Shottle Loni 2E-92 GMD DOM, was the 2013 Top Performer Award winner in Wisconsin.

The Keller family enjoys showcasing their farm throughout the year by welcoming numerous tour groups, including international groups and those scheduled through the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.

“The WMMB brings a lot of people from the food industry out to our farm. They are from all over the country and 90 percent of them have never been on a farm,” Tim said. “With so many misconceptions about the dairy industry, we nd it critical to show them what is actually happening on the farm. We ask them to share our message to their customers.”

Other management areas to be presented during the virtual tour include being environmental stewards.

The Kellers, cropping more than 600 acres, are in a watershed program and they use the latest technology and soil management practices to minimize erosion and maximize yield.

Kellercrest Holsteins dates back to the late 1960s when Tim and Mark’s parents, Daniel and Jeanne fth generational farmers, purchased the farm and two registered Holsteins. Daniel, soon to be 83 years old, still helps on the farm. Mark’s wife, Kareen, a registered nurse at Meriter Hospital in Madison, Wis., and Tim and Sandy’s children, Andrew, 20, and Kimberly, 18, also help on the farm. Kim recently began her freshman year at Iowa State University majoring in animal science and pre-veterinary.

How many years have you attended WDE? Six years

What is your favorite memory from WDE? Certainly the most eye-opening memory was the rst time that I attended and when I saw everything that was there. I really never realized the scope of the show until I was there. Another thing I liked once I got there was having the ability to discuss with people directly associated with the products and get rsthand information about the products.

How many days do you go to WDE? I usually go one to two days on average. I usually do the same thing every time I go.

I serve on the National Dairy Board, so usually my rst stop when I get to Expo is to visit our display and see who is working. I also usually work at the booth at some point, as well. After I look at the indoor displays, I check out the outdoor displays and usually get some good food. I usually try to get a couple of the grilled cheese sandwiches while I’m there.

What are the biggest attractions for you at WDE? Recently for me it has been seeing the robotic milkers. My wife passed away four years ago from leukemia, and although we have ve children, they all have taken jobs off of the farm.

I have some interest in robotics, but I’m not sure if I want to necessarily put them in or not.

Robots intrigue me – when the UW put them in at Arlington, we went to see them. They are things I am certainly looking

at, but not sure if it’s something I will get one day or not.

What are you most looking forward to seeing or doing at WDE this year? Meeting new people and talking to them certainly is entertaining. People from nearly every state and a variety of countries all attend

and it is very interesting to talk to them. When I work at the dairy board booth, we get a lot of questions on where farmer’s promotion dollars are spent. We get a lot of questions and a few concerns, but many people are very supportive of the checkoff program. That’s what I enjoy the most: talking

to people and explaining how promotion dollars work.

What information do you hope to acquire to improve your dairy? Things I would look for would be anything that would help to make my farm more efcient and more protable. There is a lot of new

Some of the farm has been in my family since 1904, which started with my grandfather.

We have 815 acres that we own and another 85 acres that we rent. We have 85 cows and do some cash cropping as we have on-farm storage and drying capabilities. We always said it is easier to raise a few more acres than it is to raise a few more cows. We purchased land throughout the years, all of which is mostly connected around the farm. All of the milking cows are on the home farm while the dry cows and heifers are housed in another barn across the road. On our land, we raise corn, beans and alfalfa.

What information do you hope to acquire to improve your dairy? I like to look at the genetics, which sire and cow families are producing the superior animals and how could they work for my operation. I’m always wondering what new companies and products will be available, from robotics and automation to greater feeding technologies. The possibilities seem limitless.

What is your favorite memory from WDE? There are so many good memories, even to list my 10 favorite would be difcult. Some time ago, I took an animal that stood second in her class.

Last year was huge. My daughter received a blue ribbon with her Guernsey heifer, which was also bred and owned, and she was the Alternate National Red and White Queen and handed out ribbons in the center ring.

Tell us about your farm. I have a traditional, diversied farm. It’s small in size with 400 acres of crops and the dairy farm. I milk 29 cows now, but used to have 52. I’m in the process of retiring.

My daughters, Taylor, 20, and Georgia, 18, are off at college so I do most of the work on the farm and need to downsize. Since 1928, we’ve raised registered Guernseys until Taylor fell in love with the Red and White breed and brought them to the farm, although we had Red and Whites prior to 1928. We’re also the oldest farm in Steele County; my family’s been farming since 1864.

SUN PRARIE, Wis. – Whether he’s behind the show halter or behind the center-stage microphone, Roger Turner of Sun Prairie, Wis., is a familiar face on the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo.

This year is no different as he will not only be presenting cattle throughout the week but will also be the of-

cial judge of the International Junior Holstein Show on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

“It is an honor to be asked to judge the junior Holstein show,” Turner said.

“I’ve watched the junior show over the years and it continues to improve in depth, numbers and quality. I look forward to the high quality show and working with today’s youth.”

As Turner judges the cattle, he will be looking for animals that best represent the true type model of the breed.

“Balance, feet and legs, and mammary systems are the three things that carry a lot of weight in my judging assessment,” Turner said.

Turner has appointed Kelli Cull of Lomira, Wis., as his associate judge. Cull and Turner have known each other for more than 25 years in both the workforce and the show circuit. Cull and her husband, Tom, are known for their elite dairy enterprise, Budjon Farms.

“I have a lot of respect for Kelli, her cattle skills and her judging abilities,” Turner said. “She is a wonderful friend and I look forward to her expertise.”

This is Turner’s fourth time ofciating at World Dairy Expo. His past assignments included being the ofcial judge for the Grand International Red & White show in 2003, the ofcial judge of the International Junior Holstein Show in 2005 and, most recently in 2014, he was the associate judge for the International Junior Holstein Show.

Beyond World Dairy Expo, Turner has traveled the world as an ofcial judge in more than 21 countries as well as a dozen states across the country and numerous Canadian provinces.

“I guess you could say that after all these years, dairy judging has become second nature to me but it is really something that I have come to learn and appreciate and hold a lot of respect for,” Turner said.

Being such an experienced judge, Turner credits the importance of preparation.

“Before each judging assignment, I prepare both mentally and physically. Mentally, I envision how the animals are going to line up and how they are going to ow from class to class. I prepare the content of my reasoning and I prepare my opening and closing comments. Physically, I do some training and conditioning so I’m in good shape and don’t feel tired and fatigued during the show.”

Originally from Ontario, Canada and raised on a registered Holstein farm, Railhaven Holsteins, Turner tributes his Canadian 4-H years for wonderful dairy judging coaching as well as his rst opportunity to visit World Dairy Expo 30 years ago.

“My rst time at Expo resulted from a 4-H trip from Canada. We came to watch the show and I fell in love,” Turner said.

Returning to Expo every year since then, Turner was a professional cattle tter for 12 years before he joined the A.I. industry as a regional sire analyst and an international sales manager for Alta Genetics. In 2012, Turner and his wife, Brenda, moved to the United States where he has since been the global sales and genetics manager for Jetstream Genetics.

Turner has prepared, presented and owned numerous All-Canadians, All-Americans and grand champions. His most memorable showing experience was the year he presented his all-time favorite cow, Acme Star Lily, on the colored shavings. She was named the Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo in 1998.

“The people, the friendships, the cows, the center stage of World Dairy Expo – they are all very close to me,” Turner said. “It is such an honor to be an ofcial judge for the 50th anniversary of World Dairy Expo.

These kids have a great passion for the dairy industry and they are our future. I am really looking forward to working with these young people.”

Emerging workforce trends to impact dairy farmers Maloney to present strategies at WDE seminar

The cows need to be milked, the crops are ready to harvest, the calves need to be fed and the list goes on and on. You can’t get it all done by yourself so you rely on a workforce; a workforce that isn’t knocking on the door quite as often while labor laws spread across the nation and consumer expectations climb. Does this sound familiar?

“I have been doing human resource management and agricultural labor policy work for 30 years and a lot of changes are ahead. A number of external factors are going to affect how farmers attract good employees and how they manage them,” Thomas Maloney said Thomas Maloney, a Cornell University senior extension associate in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University.

Maloney will present the seminar, “Agricultural Workforce Trends and their Implications for Dairy Managers,” at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the Mendota 2 meeting room in the Exhibition Hall at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. The seminar will outline the emerging workforce trends that will likely have a considerable impact on dairy managers and, most importantly, he will offer strategies to address these trends.

“Dairy managers that are interested in securing a talented agricultural workforce for the future should attend this seminar,” Maloney said. “I hope managers will think ahead and plan ahead so they have a strategy in place to attract enough productive workers.”

Immigration reform/guestworker program There is a continual emphasis coming from agricultural and dairy organizations for the federal government to pass new policies that allow undocumented workers to gain legal status and for a guestworker program that includes dairy.

The guestworker program that includes dairy will allow dairy workers to be employed temporarily and then return home. This is expected to help shift the tight labor supplies reported by dairy managers the past ve years.

“The current agricultural guestworker program, known as the H-2A, is meant for seasonal growers such as those in the fruit and vegetable industry.

It has no provision for dairy, and industry leaders would like that changed,” Maloney said.

Maloney will review some of the coming wage changes and other labor regulations likely to impact farm employment.

“Dairy managers will be challenged over these next 10 years,” Maloney said. “To retain the most qualied and productive employees will require compliance, competitive wages and the ability to tell a positive story about farm employment.”

The rst time at Expo Lehman describes initial trip

It’s not that John Lehman didn’t know about World Dairy Expo, he was just always too busy to get there.

Last year was Lehman’s rst time attending Expo in Madison, Wis. The dairy producer from La Crescent, Minn., attended the event on Friday, Oct. 2.

“I’d read a lot about Expo in magazines,” Lehman said.

“For many years I thought it would be a neat thing to go to.”

Busy fall schedules have made it difcult for Lehman to get away from his 90-cow dairy where he also raises 333 acres of crops. But last year was different. On Friday of Expo, Lehman nished morning chores before making the 2.5-hour trip to Madison with wife, Angela.

Upon arriving at the Expo grounds, Lehman realized the Expo was not going to disappoint.

“There is so much going on,” Lehman said. “It was more John Lehman than I expected – almost overwhelming.”

Dairy producer As a person who has enjoyed showing his own cattle in 4-H, Lehman was instantly drawn to the Pavillions and the cattle shows in the Coliseum. After walking through the barns, the Lehmans watched the International Red and White Show.

“That was my favorite thing to do,” Lehman said. “It was awesome seeing the cattle. People come a long way to show their cattle there.”

After watching the cattle show, the Lehmans walked through the exhibitor booths in the trade show. They also stopped at the Purple Cow Gift Shop.

By 5 p.m., the Lehmans left to return home to La Crescent. Lehmann’s younger brother did evening chores for them.

This year, Lehman is hoping he can get away again for a day. But he won’t know until Expo is closer.

“I would recommend it to anyone who hasn’t gone before,” Lehman said. “It was bigger than I expected. You denitely have to pick ǧ JOHN LEHMAN certain things you want to see. It’s too hard to get it all in.”

Behnke to celebrate 50th year at World Dairy Expo as an ofcial judge

BROOKLYN, Wis. – Brian Behnke of Brooklyn, Wis., was just shy of celebrating his rst birthday when his parents, Wally and Donna, carted him around the rst World Dairy Expo in 1967.

Fast forward 49 years, and Behnke has never missed one.

And 2016 will mark his 50th year. But this time he will be center-ring as the ofcial judge of the International Guernsey Show on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

“I am really looking forward to judging the Guernsey show,” Behnke said. “To be nominated by the breeders and exhibitors, my peers in the industry, it is a huge honor.”

Behnke has appointed Jason Danhof, of Waukon, Iowa, as his associate judge. Danhof was raised on a Guernsey farm in Marsheld, Wis., and is internationally known for his success in premier dairy cattle

“I never dreamed that I could win the contest,” Behnke said. “But on that day, I agreed with the ofcials and was the lucky winner.”

After graduating from UW-Madison, Behnke and his wife, Tami, moved to Washington where they spent 12 years with Landmark Genetics, Roylane Registered Holsteins and Wilcoxview Holsteins.

They moved back to Wisconsin in 2002 and most recently, Behnke became the business manager for the St. Jacobs brand at ABS, based in Deforest Wis. He and his wife also offer assistance on her family farm, Glenn-Ann Holsteins.

Along with his recent Expo adventures, Behnke also remembers the earlier years as well.

“It is incredible to think how Expo has evolved. The increase in the number of booths, the number of exhibitors, the size of the show, the quality of the cows … just incredible. To have a place to go every year that covers all aspects of our industry is huge,” he said.

Nutritionist Barry Dye has fed SoyChlor in Godfrey’s close-up rations for more than a decade.

Dye was first drawn to SoyChlor because in addition to being a palatable anionic supplement, it also contributed calcium and magnesium to the diet and did not contain the high levels of NPN found in other anionic supplements. Behnke is quick to add that it was not an easy feat.

“It wasn’t always easy making it to every World Dairy Expo,” Brian said with a chuckle. “When I was in grade school, my mom and dad made me go to school. I knew they were going to Expo though so on their way up to Madison, the school would call them because I was sick. My dad knew what I was up to something, but thankfully, they picked me up anyways and brought me along.”

Behnke said his family exhibited cattle nearly every year during those early years. Today a world-renown farm, Bur-Wall Registered Holsteins in Brooklyn, Wis., made its presence

known. Behnke specically remembers when his dad stood third in one of the cow classes back in 1979.

“The cow was Integrity Gay Panda and her matron was Bur-Wall Lucky Gal,” Behnke said.

Now in preparation for this year’s big show, Behnke noted the importance of “keeping his skills sharp” by judging a few smaller shows leading up to Expo which were the Missouri State Fair, the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity and a district show in Illinois.

“I’m looking forward to judging at this year’s World Dairy Expo as it celebrates its 50th year,” Behnke said. “It will be an honor.”

Water nutrition essential for optimal cow performance

Beede to speak on nutrient’s quality, quantity during Oct. 6 seminar

Water is the most essential nutrient required for dairy cattle, yet it is often overlooked when troubleshooting poor cow performance in dairy farms. Often times the forages and rations get all the attention, leaving water nutrition last – if it is even evaluated at all.

“There can be issues with water quality and quantity, which leads to big problems for dairy cows, dairy

farmers and nutritionists,” said Dr. David Beede, C. E. Meadows Endowed Chair of Dairy Cattle Management and Nutrition in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University.

Beede will discuss water nutrition, quality and quantity at his upcoming seminar “Drinking Water Nutrition and Quality: Could it be a Constraint in Your Herd?” on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Mendota 2 meeting room in the Exhibition hall at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. “In order to maximize cow performance and health, dairy farmers and nutritionists must consider two major aspects of proper water nutrition,” Beede said. “How much are cows drinking and what is the

quality of the water consumed?”

To determine if there is an issue in water quality, a water sample must be taken and sent to a reputable laboratory. Water sample kits are often supplied by the lab and will contain directions and containers.

“Take two samples,” Beede said. “One close to the well and one close to the animal’s drinking receptacle. The reason for taking two samples is because often times the contaminants are coming from the plumbing. If this Dr. David Beede was not done, we would not have known if it was bad water from Michigan State the well or bad water from the University plumbing.”

Based on Beede’s 45 years of research, the most common water quality problems are excess iron, sulfate and chloride. “These constituents can affect cow health and performance.”

If water quality problems are identied, the challenge is to either nd a new water source or to use an effective water treatment system.

“There are water treatment methods available to remove contaminants,” Beede said. “I will discuss methods in greater detail during my seminar.”

To determine if there is a problem with the quantity of water cows drink daily a water meter needs be installed in the plumbing.

“The meter is read at the same time every day, along with knowing the number of cows in the pen,” Beede said. “Then the numbers can be used to calculate if cows are drinking enough.”

A typical mature dairy cow will drink anywhere from 25 to 40 gallons of water per day. Factors affecting water consumption may be from not providing enough watering stations, not providing enough space at watering stations or the water receptacles do not ll quickly enough.

“A cow should never have to walk more than 50 feet for a drink of water and she should never have to wait more than a minute to drink,” Beede said.

Beede has evaluated water nutrition on numerous dairy farms across the nation. He has seen cases where, after the water issue was solved, milk production increased as much as ve pounds per cow per day and reproduction greatly improved.

“Proper water nutrition is always the most important single thing dairy farmers can do for their cows,” Beede said.

Forage contest announces new organic division The 33rd World Forage Analysis Superbowl is excited to announce that Organic Hay has joined the list of contest categories for 2016.

“Our goal is to adapt the contest to what we see happening in real-time with forage harvesting and processing. Adding an organic category was a natural progression for this contest,” stated Dr. Dan Undersander, Forage Agronomist for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

To be eligible, organic hay must be grown on the farm submitting the entry and must be from a bale, any type or size, like other hay entries. Additionally, the entry must be accompanied with an organic certication. The Grand Champion cash award of $1500 is presented by Blue River Hybrids.

Entry forms are available by calling 920-3364521 or visiting foragesuperbowl.org. The $30 entry fee provides entry into the contest for cash prizes, along with a detailed laboratory analysis of the sample. Participants may submit multiple entries. Corn silage entries must be received by August 18, while all other entries must be received by September 8.

How many years have you attended WDE? We have attended on and off for the past 25 years.

How many days do you go to WDE? We live 45 minutes from WDE so if we go it is from about 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. for one day. We walk through the exhibition hall, grab an ice cream, see the outside exhibits, go through the barns, and if time permits we sit and watch the judging in the colliseum. We always grab lunch at Subway on the way home.

What is your favorite memory from WDE? Last year, I sat and talked for 20 minutes with Pam Jahnke about agriculture and the Green Bay Packers – mostly about the Green Bay Packers.

Also, back in the day, Orion Samuelson and Max Armstrong did the Noon Show live at WDE for WGN Radio in Chicago. It was fun to watch in the audience.

Tell us about your farm. We have rented our farm buildings and 33 acres of pasture for the past 25 years. We purchase hay, haylage, corn silage, and high moisture corn from the owners.

For the past 10 years, we have been crossing the herd with Fleckvieh genetics.
