MADISON, Wis. – This year’s World Dairy Expo theme, Tools for Dairy’s Progress, comes to life through exciting additions for WDE attendees. “We are extremely excited about a number of new initiatives for the 2019 show,” said Katie Schmitt, WDE Media Specialist. “At the top of the list is the launch of our new World Dairy Expo Mobile Event App. It is available for Android and iOS users and allows attendees to build a custom schedule, request meetings with exhibitors and plan a route through the Trade Show with interactive maps.” Event staff have also added to Expo’s educational programs with the introduction of Knowledge Nook Sessions. These sessions will offer a platform for participating companies to highlight their newest products, services and research. of the industry will enjoy gathering for ve days of camaraderie and learning.” The 53rd annual WDE will take place Oct. 1-5 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. Last year’s event brought 65,136 attendees from 94 countries, and 887 companies participated in the trade show. It also housed 2,338 cattle from 37 states and eight Canadian providences. Expo has always been a gathering place for dairy enthusiasts of all kinds, and despite the tough dairy economy, WDE staff anticipate 2019 will bring the similar attendance from visitors, participating companies and exhibitors. “While the economy continues to provide challenging times, Expo is a great place to rejuvenate and revitalize a love for the dairy industry and discover hope for the future,” Schmitt said. “We know the dairy industry has been hit hard in recent years, which is why we strive to organize a show that is worth the time and investment of dairy producers and members of the industry regardless of their role at WDE.” Tools for Dairy’s Progress plays on the notion that WDE extends beyond the ve-day event. “Expo draws decision makers from farms of all sizes from around the globe

Partnerships with the Badger Dairy Club at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Pioneer Dairy Club also come in handy, as Expo employs members of these organizations to help in the show ring, across the grounds and with the ethics program. WDE staff and volunteers hope their efforts provide a great environment for dairy farmers and industry professionals to create tools for their progress. “There is an incredible atmosphere at World Dairy Expo that is a result of the global dairy industry meeting,” Schmitt said. “Expo creates this place where farmers can learn about new technology, converse with fellow producers, attend educational events and so much more. And even better, it’s a great place for the whole family to be. There really is no other place like it.”

Siemers recognized for dedication to farm, family
Janina Siemers was surprised when she was told about being honored as the Dairy Woman of the Year. “Truthfully, this is a farm and family award,” said Siemers. “Without this family, there is no recognition.” Siemers, business manager of Siemers Holsteins in Newton, Wis., is being recognized by Janina Siemers World Dairy Expo as the 2019 Dairy Woman of the Year. She will receive the award at Expo’s Dinner with the Stars Wednesday evening of World Dairy
Expo week. Siemers operates Siemers Holsteins with her husband, Dan, and brother-in-law, Paul. Siemers Holsteins is one of the nation’s top genomic and performance herds, built on a legacy approaching its sixth generation. The herd of 3,200 cows and nearly 6,000 acres boasts genetics and management that have resulted in a 37,500-pound rolling herd average with 1,440 pounds of fat and 1,100 pounds of protein. Siemers handles the nancial and legal side of the business, along with human resources, insurance, data entry and various protocols involving both cows and 50 employees. The family has 27 Progressive Genetic Herd awards and has topped Holstein USA’s list for the most Gold Medal Dams, Dams of Merit and Gold Medal Sires. They had the 2015 Wisconsin Holstein Associ-

ation Cow of the Year and won the Outstanding Dairy Sustainability Award from the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy in 2016. The organizational skills Siemers learned from her mother and the incredible work ethic her father instilled in her have helped her keep things in perspective and have the determination to always get the job done. In addition to her farm role, she has been the dairy leader and the sheep leader for the local 4-H club and helped coordinate the county’s state fair 4-H dairy group. She worked on two committees for Wisconsin’s National Holstein Convention and has spent two years on the local school board. Siemers said she gets fulllment through her coaching of the dairy quiz bowl team, which has won the state title seven times in 4-H competition and six times in the Junior Holstein contest. “There’s a need to give back,” she said. “There’s nothing more exciting than seeing kids get a concept. It feeds your soul.” Among the young people she has worked with are her own sons – Jordan, 23, a dairy sire analyst for Select Sires; and Connor, 19, a student at Lakeland University in hospitality management. Both are at the farm regularly and understand the Siemers’ family philosophy that the next generation works away from the farm before considering a return, and that if they do return, they must come back with valuable skills. “It’s striving to do our best every day and doing it day in and day out,” Siemers said. “We’re the luckiest people in the world to have people who care about their jobs and care about the cattle. I am truly grateful, thankful and blessed.”

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – When Chad Ryan rst picked up a clip board for a county dairy judging practice, he could have only dreamed one day he would be chosen by his peers to place the International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo. “I was overwhelmed; it brought tears of joy to my eyes,” Ryan said of receiving the phone call from Expo Dairy Cattle Show Manager Ann Marie Magnochi. “To be nominated and selected by your peers, fellow exhibitors, it was just surreal.” There was not a question in Ryan’s mind who would be donning a tuxedo, standing next to him as his
associate. “Lynn is my best friend, and I respect his opinion,” Ryan said. “We see cows a lot alike.” The two have a long-standing friendship, dating back to the mid1990s. Each served as the other’s best man at their weddings. They have owned cattle together, including the 2000 Grand International Red and White Show Intermediate and Grand Champion RRK Red-Marker Rizz-Red. They have tied together, operating large show strings at a variety of shows. Harbaugh said. This will not be the rst time that either Ryan or Harbaugh will judge at World Dairy Expo. Ryan placed the International Red and White Show in 2017 and the International Junior Holstein Show in 2015. He served as Harbaugh’s associate in the 2012 International Ayrshire Show. Harbaugh served as the lead judge in the 2017 International Junior Holstein Show, the International Guernsey Shows in 2015 and 2010, the 2013 International Milking Shorthorn Show, the 2012 International Ayrshire Show and the 2007 Grand International Red and White Holstein Show. Ryan along with his parents, Mark and Mary, wife, Amy, and sons, Dylan, 11, and Cameron, 10, operate Ryan-Vu Holsteins in Fond du Lac, Wis. The Ryans milk 80 registered Holsteins and have about 125 head of youngstock on the farm. Harbaugh works as a sales representative for CentralStar Select Sires and operates Bella-View Holsteins with his wife, Sara, and children, Jacob, 14, Logan, 12, and Madison, 8. The Harbaughs have about 25 head of registered dairy cattle encompassing several breeds. The Harbaughs raise heifers at their home
facilities, while their milking females are housed at Forest Ridge Holsteins, in Eden, Wis., with partners Kurt and Sarah Loehr. Both Ryan and Harbaugh have had long-time judging careers, with roots in their county 4-H judging programs, and both competed on the University of Wisconsin-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course judging teams while attending the Short Course program. Both have continued working with the 4-H programs in their counties serving as judging coaches, and have followed very similar paths to reach where they are in their judging careers today. “I started judging some futurities and district shows, and it just kind of blossomed from there,” Ryan said. “The experience judging at state and national level shows is how we got here today.” Ryan said he has a soft spot for old cows; two-time World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion Rainyridge Tony Beauty is one of his favorites. “I love a cow that can come back and do it over and over again,” Ryan said. “Tony Beauty came back and won a second time when she was 14 years old and still looked remarkable.” Turn to JUDGES | Page 9

The judge loves cows with great balance, tremendous udders and quality throughout; and that is what he will be looking for the rst weekend in October, said Ryan. “I love cows that can move and glide around the ring,” he said. “I like good before big.” Harbaugh agreed with his colleague, and listed cows like Robrook Goldwyn Cameron and Vandyk-K Integrity Paradise and Wilstar-RS Talent Limited-Red among his favorite past Expo winners. “We see cows a lot the same; we always have,” Harbaugh said. “I

don’t need the biggest animal in the class, but I do need the most correct one, and the cows have to have great udders.” Ryan recalled several times when the pair has watched shows together, noting they typically pick the same cows from the rail. The pair is looking forward to enjoying the task at hand, but takes it very seriously at the same time, particularly with the economic troubles facing the dairy industry today. “We are at the most crucial time we’ve ever been at as far as
trying to encourage young people and larger dairies to be part of our industry,” Harbaugh said of keeping the showring aspect of the industry alive and vibrant. “We need them now more than ever.” Ryan nds encouragement that a lot of shows are still holding their numbers pretty well. “I have the utmost respect for World Dairy Expo and the exhibitors there,” Ryan said. “As an exhibitor myself, I understand the time, the nancial commitment, everything these people go through to get there. You take it very seriously, go in with an open mind and just look at the cows.” Harbaugh agreed. “You have to have a thick skin because not everyone will think what you did was right,” Harbaugh said. “But you have to stay true to what you believe, and the type of cattle you like.” With their combined previous experience on the colored shavings, both Ryan and Harbaugh are ready to take on the challenge of sorting great cattle. Ryan said he has tried to keep the idea of judging at the back of his mind, but admitted he thinks about it often. “The anticipation of how great the show is going to be and the opportunity to judge it is pretty amazing,” Ryan said. “The week of Expo will certainly be different this year not being in the barns every day, but I’m humbled to stand in the center of the ring. When the rst class of spring calves come in Friday afternoon, it will denitely hit me then.”

Describe your career in the dairy industry. I was born and raised on a small Holstein dairy farm in southwestern Pennsylvania. I completed my bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in dairy and animal sciences at Penn State University, University of Maryland and University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively. Upon completion of the Ph.D. degree, I did short stints in the pharmaceutical industry as a product development coordinator for dairy cattle research trials on university and commercial farms, and the feed industry as a eld-based dairy nutrition technical consultant with responsibilities in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Illinois. Following the industry experience, for nearly 31 years, I have been a professor and extension dairy nutritionist in the dairy science department at the University of

What drew you to work in the dairy industry and what do you enjoy about it? My dairy farm background, and also technology adoption, change, ever improving cows and crops, and the many dedicated people in the dairy industry. What’s been the best part of your career? Having the exibility in my extension and research position to be able to work closely with so many colleagues, farmers, agri-business professionals, consultants and students, and to have had the opportunity to perform educational outreach programs internationally. What’s a saying or philosophy you live by? Never stop learning. What challenges have you overcome in your career and how did you overcome them? It was a challenge keeping up with the extremely rapid pace of change in scientic advancements, information transfer, and computer and software technologies. I continued to learn directly from colleagues and students as much as possible and tried to stay focused on the applied aspects of value to the industry.

What has been the hardest part about your job? Staying positive and focused during periods of tough economic times of low milk prices and (or) high feed prices, and during years of adverse crop conditions. I learned to look toward tough minded dairy farmers to keep calm and carry on. If you could describe your dairy career journey, what words would you use? It went by way too quickly. It was exciting, challenging and rewarding, and all the many people involved in the dairy industry have made it worthwhile, memorable and a whole lot of fun. What are your favorite activities when you are not working? I have so many – hunting, walking the dog, following professional and college sports, biking, reading, traveling, cutting and splitting rewood, enjoying the latest local craft beer, spending time with family and friends, and consulting on special projects within the dairy industry. What does it mean to you to be named Industry Person of the Year? It is an extremely humbling dairy industry honor to receive. I am very appreciative of the recognition, and it is a nice culmination to my career as I just retired from the university earlier this year.

Knapps’ history rooted in show
Expo a family tradition

EPWORTH, Iowa – The stars aligned in 1988 when two young Guernsey breeders exhibiting at World Dairy Expo met. This moment laid the foundation for a family and herd of Guernsey cows that would become synonymous around the globe for top quality golden cows. While Randy Knapp was raised on his family’s Guernsey farm, that year he was working for Pralle’s Favre Hill Guernsey Farm from Onalaska, Wis., and his now-wife, Wanda, was exhibiting with her uncle’s South Lane Farm from Bankston, Iowa. “That year, the Guernsey barn at Expo happened to be full, and both of our herds were stalled in the Jersey

barn, next to each other,” Randy said. Spending a week in the barns across the walk from each other, the two soon learned how much they had in common, particularly their love for the Guernsey cow. A new love grew, and eventually the young couple married and began their dairy farming career and their renowned Knapps Guernseys. Today, Knapps Guernseys, of Epworth, Iowa, is home to 110 milking females, which are predominantly the Guernseys they are so well-known for, along with the addition of some Brown Swiss, Jerseys and Ayrshires. The herd boasts an average production of 21,000 pounds of milk with a 4.9% fat and 3.9% protein test, with a somatic cell count that is consistently under 150,000. The cows are milked in a 52-stall, tiestall barn and the overow cows are kept in freestall and packbarn housing. Randy and Wanda purchased their current farm in 1996. Randy and Wanda, along with son Austin and his girlfriend, Jenna Bruech, do the majority of the milking, calf care and heifer management. Their son, Landen, works full time off the farm, but handles feed mixing and manure hauling duties on the farm after work and on weekends. “Family and friends are a very big part of our farm operation,” Wanda said. “Our families are both huge, and contribute a lot of help and support when it comes to shows, farm tours, judging workshops or hosting convention groups.” The show ring is a tradition Randy and Wanda chose to pass on to their sons. Both Austin and Landen began their show ring careers well before they were old enough for 4-H, and have had many successes in both open and junior show competitions over the years. “One of our favorite show ring memories was the rst year Austin showed at Expo,” Wanda said. “He was 11 years old and had ve cows in the center of the ring for grand champion of the junior show. Two of the three cows pulled out were his, and he won grand and reserve grand of the junior show; his smile was priceless.” World Dairy Expo serves as the backdrop for many of the Knapps’ favorite memories, and is at the top of never-miss list of shows and activities as it has become a family tradition for the Knapps and their extended family. Expo preparations on the farm are an on-going process for the Knapps. “We start preparing calves for the shows as soon as they are born,” Austin said. “All of our calves are pushed to their maximum potential starting in the hutch. The youngstock are truly the future of our herd and we treat each and every one like she could be the next big thing.” Animals eventually selected as show prospects are taken to the Knapps’ show barn where they live in box stalls under fans and are placed on a show diet. Show heifers are led and washed or rinsed daily, and clipped off regularly prior to the shows. Milking females on the Knapps’ show program also have their rations adjusted according to their specic needs. They are fed more dry hay. With this rigorous attention to detail, the Knapps

Knapps Guernseys is known for perennial showring success. have developed a tremendous merchandising program based off of the elite-caliber pedigrees they have developed and the successes they have had with their bred and owned Guernseys. “We really enjoy seeing animals we have bred or developed here on the farm go on and do well for their new owners,” Austin said. “It is just as satisfying for us to be the breeders of the animals that win as it is to be the owners.” Most Guernsey enthusiasts think of the T family when they think of Knapps Guernseys. Knapps Ace Tamera EX-93 was the foundation cow for that family, which has produced nearly 200 All-American
nominations. “Tamera is one of the best cows the breed has ever known,” Austin said. “She has over 150 daughters, located in multiple herds across the United States, as well as daughters in Asia, South America and Australia. That is the most daughters from a single cow in the entire breed.” One of Tamera’s best-known daughters is her rst daughter born from embryo transfer, Knapps Regis Tambourine EX-95. Tambourine’s list of accomplishments is long, and she was the rst cow carrying the Knapp’s prex to obtain the breed maximum score of EX-95. Not just a pretty face, Tambourine has a lifetime production record over 200,000 pounds of milk and is one of only two cows in the breed to obtain the pinnacle score of EX-95 and make a 40,000 milk record. Tambourine has been a unanimous All-American selection three times and is a three-time national show reserve grand champion and national junior show grand champion. “Tambourine’s legacy as a brood cow is just beginning. Her oldest daughter is scored EX-94 and has received Junior All-American honors,” Austin said. “Just last year, Tambourine had daughters or granddaughters nominated in all seven heifer classes, along with a milking yearling and a junior 2-yearold.” Of those individuals, two were named as unanimous All-American selections and third was also designated as the All-American. Cows like Tambourine and successful cow families are the result of adherence to a well thoughtout breeding philosophy. “We like to use bulls out of great cows and great cow families,” Randy said. “We put the majority of the emphasis on udder traits, feet and legs, DPR and components. These are the things we feel make a better cow and make our herd more protable.” With no shortage of great cows and cow families of their own, the Knapps collect and market semen from sons of their top animals, as well as selling breeding-age bulls to other Guernsey breeders. “We tend not to push for a lot of pounds of milk, especially in our younger cows,” Austin said. “We think getting more components and improving the longevity of the cow makes the cow more protable for us in the long run.”

“Our farm started with eight cows; growth has been a constant. We went from a tie-stall barn to a retro-tted double-8 parlor, to the new double-20 we installed in 2015, and are currently milking 915 cows,” Heidi Fischer said. Fischer and her family will host a World Dairy Expo Virtual Farm Tour Saturday, Oct. 5 at noon in the Exhibition Hall. Allex Livestock Intelligence is sponsoring the tour. In 2014, Fischer joined her husband, Jon, and his parents, Mike and Sue, as partners on the dairy near Hatley, Wis. “Jon started farming with his parents after high school, and I joined the farm to be more available for our two young daughters,” Fischer said. The cows produce a rolling herd average of 32,651 pounds of milk at 4.25% butter fat and 3.25% protein, all with a somatic cell count below 100,000. “The facilities have been updated to match the growth of our herd, with a focus on efciency,” Fischer said. “We recently added a tunnel-ventilat-

ed barn to complement the existing naturally-ventilated barn that now both house milking cows.” Fischer also mentioned a new heifer facility was constructed in 2012, and expanded on in 2015 in preparation for the latest milking herd growth in 2016. Additionally, a new calf barn was constructed in 2017, doubling the size of the current one, and a new youngstock heifer facility was built in 2018. Aspects the family wishes to highlight while hosting their virtual farm tour is taking their farm’s growth step by step while improving cow ow and employee ow throughout the facilities. “Though our growth was fairly rapid, we built the facilities incrementally to not only adjust for the growth but to make sure the facilities would work for us. When you walk through our barns and see each addition, you will notice changes and additions to improve the workow of the operation,” Fischer said. “We did a ton of research and walked through a lot of barns, and worked with the experts to make sure the barns would not only t the needs of the cows but would have an efcient workow to them.” After viewing the virtual farm tour video, Fischer hopes WDE attendees take with them a new focus on cow comfort and making things work to the best of their ability. “We really believe when designing and building a new barn or facility [that] it needs to work for you and not just be four walls and a roof,” Fischer said. “Investing in the right building and technology will pay its dividends every day, both in the cows and with the employees.” Lastly, they have learned a few things from hosting a virtual farm tour, as well. “We are very fortunate to have not only great, high producing cows, but we have a really efcient setup and new buildings; we believe in investing in technology; our employees have been a part of our success and we have great industry experts to call on when something comes up. We believe in a team approach,” Fischer said. “It’s an honor to share our story.”

Breeding cattle to create excitement Wolfs look to grow popularity of Ayrshire breed By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
EPWORTH, Iowa – A passion for breeding registered dairy cattle that will appeal to all dairy cattle enthusiasts is what drives the Wolf family of OldBankston Ayrshires in Epworth, Iowa, and what has made the name Old-Bankston synonymous with award winning Ayrshires. Old-Bankston Ayrshires is the show cattle division of Wolf Dairy, which is home to 240 Holsteins, 45 Ayrshires and ve Milking Shorthorns. Wolf Dairy, established in 1930, is now operated by Jim and Kim Wolf and their children, Kurt and wife Michelle; Ted and wife Katie; Scott and Jill. Kurt and Michelle take the lead in working with and developing the farm’s show string. Ayrshires rst came to the farm when Kurt, Ted and Scott decided they would like to show something a bit different from the Holsteins they had been exhibiting at their county and state fairs. “Iowa is known for having quality Ayrshire cattle, so that seemed like a good choice,” Kurt said. “From those initial purchases, we met some great people and ended up partnering on a few animals, and over the years the number of partnerships has grown. We enjoy partnering with good people who share our appreciation of good Ayrshire cattle.” Developing those partnerships has allowed the Wolfs to enjoy a great deal of success in both shows and sales. Megan went on to win her second reserve grand champion banner of the InternaƟonal Ayrshire Show. nominations have been bred, exhibited and sold. “With the help of our partners we’ve had tremendous success,” Kurt said. “We’ve exhibited the Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo, the Royal Winter Fair, the North American International Livestock Exposition, the National Cattle Congress, the All-American Dairy Show and numerous state fairs and state shows around the country.” With partner John Cannon, the Wolfs owned Steam Valley Wilton Magic Bri EX-94, the 2011 World Dairy Expo Grand Champion Ayrshire, who was also Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in that same year and again in 2013. Bri has earned three All-American titles and was the All-World 5-year-old in 2011. She has over 40 registered offspring. Sharwards Calimero Megan EX-94 is another successful partnership animal, owned with Michael Maier, that has been developed by the Wolfs. Megan has over 30 registered offspring to her credit and is a four-time All-American, including unanimous designations in 2011 as a 4-year-old and as a 100,000 pound cow in 2014. She also garnered a reserve AllAmerican title in 2013 as an aged cow. Another partnership cow owned with Maier that has been a successful one for Old-Bankston is De La Plaine Remington Wing-ET EX-92. Wing has over 40 registered offspring, as well. “These three cows have been a big
part of our past success,” Kurt said. “Between the three of them, they have over 100 registered offspring, many of which we have been able to market.” The marketing of Old-Bankston genetics has led to the creation of a brand for the Wolfs, where the name is instantly connected with high-caliber individuals from some of the best cows in the breed. “We try to make what people are going to want to buy,” Kurt said of the Old-Bankston breeding philosophy. “Everyone likes a heifer or cow that is going to win purple banners, but we also like to keep production in mind.” Creating growth, excitement and demand in the Ayrshire breed is an important factor for the Wolfs, and it is something they keep in mind as they breed their cattle. “We hope the Ayrshire breed continues to grow,” Kurt said. “In order to realize that growth, Ayrshire breeders will need to continue to offer their cattle and genetics through public and private sales, especially to non-Ayrshire breeders. Getting new people involved and excited about the breed is something we strive to do.” The Wolfs see value in showing as a marketing tool to showcase their genetics to a wide audience. “When we go to a show, any show, we aren’t going there for a premium check,” Turn to WOLF | Page 24

Michelle said. “We are going to market our cattle, help create deep pedigrees and meet people who share our same passion for quality dairy cattle.” Without fail, each year the show cows and heifers of Old-Bankston make the trek to Madison, Wis., to compete in the International Ayrshire Show held at World Dairy Expo. “The No. 1 reason to show at World Dairy Expo each year is the marketing opportunities,” Kurt said. “There is no better place to showcase your best genetics to the entire world than [there]. Expo has given us the opportunity to spotlight our genetics and has allowed us to sell cattle to Australia.” Preparation for World Dairy Expo has neither a beginning nor an ending at Old-Bankston, but instead is a continuous cycle that knows no calendar. “We are constantly scouring show results for any show from a county fair to national and international shows, looking for successful matings we might be able to replicate on our farm,” Michelle said. “We like to buy a few cows and heifers with unique pedigrees to add to

Rosy was named the 2018 unanimous All-American Senior 3-year-old after winning her class and being selected as the reserve intermediate champion at World Dairy Expo last fall. From the same cow family, Palmyra Predator B Ruthless, owned with Mary Faber and Matt Mackinson, is a 1-year-old daughter of two-time World Dairy Expo Champion Palmyra Berkely P Ruth EX-94. She is another individual that the Wolfs expect to make an impact on their breeding program in the future. Old-Bankston JC Malibu EX-92, owned with Melissa Burns, was the 2015 reserve All-American summer yearling. Malibu is proving herself as a brood cow, being the dam of the 2018 unanimous All-American and All-World spring calf and the 2018 reserve AllAmerican spring yearling. ToppGlen Prime’s Wish EX-91, owned with Adam Ludwig, was the 2017 reserve All-American 4-year-old, and Belleroute Doramy EX-94, recently named the grand champion at the Minnesota State Fair Ayrshire Show, are two other individuals that give the Wolfs cause for excitement in their breeding program. “We breed our cattle with the goal in mind that we want to have offspring that will catch the eye of any dairy cattle enthusiast,” Kurt said. “One of our future goals is to one day bring home a Premier Breeder banner from the Ayrshire show at World Dairy Expo.”

Good friends make for a great Expocation Uglows share experience through social media By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
WATERTOWN, Wis. – Those who are aficted with the ‘cow show virus’ understand what draws others to Madison, Wis., the rst week in October. It’s not the locale, the weather or the ease of packing – early October in Wisconsin can bring anything from summer-like temperatures necessitating fans for cow comfort, to below-freezing temperatures creating a need for hot water to melt the Orvus soap on the washrack. Everyone who attends, however, knows people who do not understand what drives others to pack nearly every article of clothing they own and head to the Alliant Energy Center for more than a week of everything cows. That is what led Nick and Buffy Uglow, of Horseshoe Hill Brown Swiss, to come up with the idea of creating the Instagram page Expocation. “Every year we have friends, both ag and nonag, who ask us, ‘You’re taking a week off to exhibit animals at World Dairy Expo? What does that entail?’” Nick said. “Buffy is very talented with photography and social media, so I thought we should have a little fun and showcase all the work and fun that goes into the preparation and our eight days at World Dairy Expo.” Throughout the year, the Expocation page makes posts detailing things that happen on the path to World Dairy Expo, from on-farm preparations to sales to other show results, with some memories from previous years mixed in. “The people who we tie with all get along really well,” Nick said. “We are not afraid to make a little fun of ourselves and those we tie with to add some humor.” Each year the Uglows and their Horseshoe Hill Brown Swiss are joined by the Agnew family and their Mapleton Valley Farms Milking Shorthorns; Josey Morris and Crown-J Guernseys; Nick Tetzlaff with Daltondale Ayrshires; Dave and Rene Johnson and their children Otis, Malcolm and Quincee, with their Trackside Brown Swiss; and Jessica Hasheider of Hasheider Milking Shorthorns. In addition to their core group of exhibitors, they will have some other tie-ins, as well. Each year they typically have 22 to 25 head in their string, and are planning to have 20 head at this year’s Expo. “We like working together to make sure our animals look their best when they enter the Coliseum,” Uglow said. “We also enjoy our time together at the display. We put a lot of effort into constructing our display; it’s our home away from home for the week. That makes it satisfying to hang out there when nothing is showing, and visit with each other and old friends who stop by throughout the week.” With Expocation, The Uglows try and feature each person who is involved with their World Dairy Expo show string, highlighting that person’s responsibilities and talents. Also featured are a variety of friends who may stop by the string to chat and view the cattle. “We are a pretty unique group in our string. We are all involved with our respective family farms, but we also all have jobs outside of the farm, ranging from dairy route sales, nutrition, articial insemination, banking and teaching, among others,” Nick said. “We named the page Expocation because it’s our time together and our vacation away from our off-farm jobs.” The group has a family-type feel and like most families, they have developed traditions, many revolving around food, that they adhere to each year. “Jessica is a very talented cook and has become our full-time cook,” Nick said. “We eat most our meals together, but breakfast is probably the most signicant. We also usually invite a handful of friends over on Friday evening for a little soiree.” Telling the story of the people involved in their show string and the animals they bring is important to the Uglows. “We like to capture more of what happens behind the scenes in the barn, such as the daily care of the animals and everything we do to get them ready for the ring,” Nick said. “It’s a different look than what you might see from the showring photos in the Coliseum or the professional photos taken of the animals.” Celebrating successes of their friends and keeping those cherished memories at hand also play a role in the content of the posts made to the page. Nick counts the wins of his friends in his favorite memories. “The rst thing that comes to mind is when Otis Johnson’s Brown Swiss fall yearling won her class in 2011, and was named junior champion of

the junior show and reserve junior champion of the open show. We were all able to get away from the barn for a bit to be at ringside, cheering on little 12-year-old Otis,” Nick said. “Another memory is when Josey Morris’ heifer, Coulee Crest Chall Jeanie, was junior champion of the Guernsey show in 2009 and 2010; and the Agnews having had reserve junior champion and honorable mention intermediate champion in the Milking Shorthorn show.” Because of the content and focus, the Uglows have developed a large following on their Instagram page, and expect the number to grow as World Dairy Expo season nears again. During the time they are at the Alliant Energy Center, they try to post at least once or twice a day. In some way, everyone involved in their group contributes to the content of the page. “We have gotten a lot of great feedback from friends who can’t make it to the grounds,” Nick said. “They tell us they feel like they’re a part of the show by following our page.”

Joining the ranks McGuirk receives National Dairy Shrine’s Pioneer Award By Jill Traut

DODGEVILLE, Wis. – Dr. Sheila M. McGuirk is no stranger to World Dairy Expo. She has volunteered for the past 35 years in various capacities, helped implement the formal cattle check-in process, is a valuable part the ethics program, and has been a go-to resource for cow health issues during the show. This tremendous Expo service, coupled with her prestigious veterinarian and college instructor careers, has earned her a 2019 National Dairy Shrine Pioneer Award. She will be recognized at the National Dairy Shrine Reception and Banquet on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the Exhibition Hall.
“I am extremely honored. This organization is so astounding, powerful and uniting,” McGuirk said. “The past recipients are icons I can’t see myself living up to. Dairy Shrine has such a history and you look at the people who have won in the past, and I am just in awe.” Five individuals are being honored with this year’s Pioneer Award, which recognizes recipients’ longtime service and contributions to the dairy industry. Honorees will have their stories and portraits added to the Dairy Shrine’s National Dairy Hall of Fame and Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wis. McGuirk, who resides in Dodgeville, Wis., with her husband, Paul Manley, is a world-renowned expert in dairy calf health, replacement management and troubleshooting herd health issues. cine from the University of Georgia in 1977, and she became one of the founding faculty members of the University of Wisconsin’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. Nearly 2,400 veterinary students have learned under her guidance. “Some of my favorite [teaching] memories involve taking people who are not familiar with cattle, working with them and then having them choose to dedicate themselves to a career with cattle,” McGuirk said. Though she is ofcially retired from teaching, McGuirk still works with vet students through Expo’s ofcial cattle check-in process. She enjoys watching the students interact with both dairy cattle and dairy exhibitors, and she nds great value in Expo being a place to offer that positive experience. “The people who are involved with cattle continue to amaze me,” McGuirk said. “The relationships they establish and the experiences and circumstances they endure through are amazing.” Being retired has not completely kept McGuirk from her love of cattle care. She still does some vet work, and she plans to continue being involved in Expo for years to come. You will nd her helping with check-in, tending to cow health issues, and assisting in other capacities as she is asked. “I’m still 150% involved,” McGuirk said. “Every role I’ve had at Expo is really neat because it takes me closer to the people with whom I’ve worked together with for many years.” McGuirk’s dairy experience started long before her veterinarian and instructor days. She grew up on a dairy farm in Bel Air, Md., where her family milked Jerseys and had their own processing plant. A lightning re caused her family to sell the milk cows, but they continued raising beef cattle afterward. The farm is still owned by her family. Years of veterinarian care and classroom teachings have been appreciated by many, and those years of service have earned her several awards in the process. Some of those include being the rst, and only woman, to have ever been honored as Expo’s 2012 Industry Person of the Year, being named the 2018 American Association of Bovine Practitioners’ Mentor of the Year, and she is one of only three women to have earned AABP’s Award of Excellence in 1998. She is also a two-time winner of the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association’s Veterinarian of the Year Award in 2000 and 2016, and in 2013, she was one of only two women named in Bovine Veterinarian magazine’s Top 20 Most Inuential Dairy and Beef Cattle Veterinarians. “I never feel deserving of any award I get,” McGuirk said. “I couldn’t do it myself. My family, colleagues and friends are just as deserving.” The National Dairy Shrine’s Wall of Fame highlights the stories of hundreds of dairy pioneers, past and present, and McGuirk will now join those ranks.

Finance management is one of the most important factors to control in any business, but especially in market-driven economies like agriculture. Steve Bodart, Compeer Financial Senior Dairy Consultant, will share his knowledge on controllable economic inputs in a dairy operation in his presentation, “What Drives Financial Success on a Dairy.” The presentation will be Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. in Mendota 2 meeting room of the Exhibition Hall. It will be 45 minutes long with time for questions at the end. The appeal of this presentation for farmers might be too Steve Bodart simple to ignore. “I’ve never met a farmer Compeer Financial who didn’t want to make more money,” Bodart said. For 18 years, Bodart has worked at Compeer Financial with the specic nances of dairies and lately, has been studying what nancial factors make them successful. “It’s very intriguing,” Bodart said. “We’ve collected more than 10 years worth of data.” A farm boy from eastern Wisconsin, Bodart pursued a degree in agricultural education from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and a master’s degree in animal science from Iowa State University. Prior to his work at nancial cooperative, Bodart was the CFO of a large dairy in western Wisconsin, giving him hands-on experience in the eld. This, coupled with his understanding of a family dairy business, will provide wisdom to the discussion at Expo. His expertise lies in budget scenario development, nancial and production analysis on dairy and custom heifer operations, building design and layouts for commercial dairies, risk management, and understanding leading indicators for business success. Lately, Bodart has been researching the key factors that lead to nancial success on dairies lasting through varying years and operation styles. “While no two dairies are the same, statistics show key factors on every dairy which lead to its nancial success,” Bodart said. “It’s important to capitalize on those areas.” Those six factors include somatic cell count, energy corrected milk, net herd turnover cost, death loss, pregnancy rate and heifer survival rate as the most important characteristics to maximize protability on a modern dairy operation. Bodart plans to present a decade of collected data from Compeer’s clients and the subsequent suggested benchmarks created. Data was collected from farms averaging 1,071 milking cows beginning in 2006. “We have monitored key factors year in and year out, and have created these benchmarks for farmers to manipulate or maintain on dairies to improve operations and lead to success,” he said. Attending a presentation like this is also a way to connect with others in the industry to compare practices. “We use real-life examples, so all of this is feasible,” Bodart said. “It’s good for farmers to discuss with their peers what is and isn’t working on their farms, regardless where they’re from.” The keys to success change over the years, but Bodart’s company is using leading indicators to see where business trends are heading. “This is also a chance for farmers to take corrective action if needed,” Bodart said. “It’s all about becoming more protable.”

Woodmansee family named 2019 McKown Master Breeder

protein test. Clark also owns two other farms consisting of 1,200 acres. Those farms are currently leased to a 400-plus cow milking herd that carries the WoodHill preďƒžx. As no stranger to the showring, a colored shavings favorite is none other than Hazels Goldwyn Hatty (3E-96). In 2017, she was named Grand Champion at the Northeast Fall National Holstein Show and placed third at World Dairy Expo in the 150,000-pound production cow class. These accomplishments earned her honorable mention All-American honors that year. Never fearful to add world-class genetics to their herd, Woodmansee partnered with others to purchase Quality-Ridge Stomi Hazel 2E-96 who is Hatty’s dam. He also partnered on acquiring Dubeau Dundee Hezbollah (EX-92) and had considerable success developing her daughters. Clark has bred no less than 10 max-score EX-92 second-lactation cows from Hezbollah. Additionally, he has bred multiple excellent daughters from Scientiďƒžc Gold Dana Rae-ET (2E-95) and is part owner of one of the most sought-after cows in the business, Rosiers Blexy Goldwyn-ET (EX-96). Other notable cows he has partnered on include Robrook Goldwyn Cameron (EX-95) and Unique Dempsey Cheers (EX-92). In the early 1990s, Clark caught the show bug with Lo-Pine Jet Biana earning Reserve All-American honors. What’s more, Woodmansees BStar Jinx (EX-94), Woodmansees Inspired Bette (VG-89), and Lew-Lin Highlight Hotstuff (EX-94) were all nominated All-American. In addition, some more famous Woodmansee bred cows include: Woodmansees Starbuck Caramel (2E-94), Woodmansees Enhancer Holly (EX-94), Woodmansees Buck Jamie (3E-93), Woodmansees Sexation Megan Mae (2E-93), Woodmansees T Threat Lolita (EX-92), Woodmansees BA Adilad (2E-92), and Woodmansees Mandingo Jillian (EX-92). Clark Woodmansee III has been instrumental in Connecticut and Northeast U.S. Holstein activities, serving on both boards for many years. He has also been a leader in developing the Eastern States Holstein Show into one of the premier shows in the country that is today. The herd has been declared as the Premier Breeder at the Eastern States Exposition seven times since 1989, highlighting their depth of quality cows and having two herd sales in 1987 and 1996. Clark has been involved in ownership of cattle that have won the New York Spring Show, Eastern States, Grand Champion at the All-American, Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair, and Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo. The family’s promise to the business is unwavering. Woodmansee has in the past been presented with the Green Pasture Award for his stewardship and commitment to the land and surrounding community. In 2016, Clark was chosen to be the subject of a documentary called “Life of a Dairymanâ€? in which he explained the daily life of a modern dairy farmer, the challenges he faces, and the outstanding story about why he loves the business. The awards and elite cattle speak for themselves when representing Woodmansee Holsteins. The Woodmansee family integrates passion, diligence, and humility into one to maximize their potential with the Holstein breed. Jersey cows spark life-long passion

DEFOREST, Wis. – Natalie and Wade Kessenich were born into a black and white world, growing up on a Holstein farm near DeForest, Wis. That world changed forever when they met a little brown cow named Bushy, a 3-year-old Jersey. Bushy laid the foundation for a passion for the Jersey breed that would follow them into adulthood, and earn them the accolades of a National Young Jersey Breeder award from the American Jersey Cattle Association. “When we got our rst Jersey, none of us could
have imagined the opportunities the Jersey cow would bring us in the future,” Natalie said. “As our Jersey herd grew rapidly, so did our love and passion for the breed and the community that came along with it.” The brother and sister duo were honored in June at the association’s annual meeting in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. In 2015, Natalie and Wade were afforded the opportunity to become partners in their family’s farm, working alongside their parents, Jeff and Robin, to form Kessenich Farms LLC. “Our parents took a big leap of faith and put their trust in our vision of transitioning the high-quality, high-producing purebred herd to the smaller, more efcient little brown cow,” Natalie said. “They really are our biggest and best supporters.”

While the Kessenichs use the AJCA’s Jersey Marketing Service, as well as making a few key purchases of high-quality purebred Jerseys through private treaty sales, they made a commitment to advancing their reproduction program within the existing herd. “It wasn’t economically feasible to transition our entire herd to all purebred Jerseys,” Wade said. “We decided to breed the Holsteins to Jersey semen. Since that time, our Holstein herd has shrunk from 700 head to 200 head, and continues to decline.” The Kessenichs are now milking 675 head, including 370 purebred Jerseys and 170 Holsteins, along with 135 Jersey-Holstein crosses, with everything being bred to Jersey semen. The herd has a rolling herd average of 20,982 pounds of milk, 1,055 pounds of fat and 760 pounds of protein. “What was initially viewed as a huge gamble in our parents’ eyes – the transition of the herd to Jerseys – has been especially protable in these extremely difcult nancial times within the dairy industry,” Natalie said, referring to the increased feed efciencies and increased milk components. While they are denitely prot-minded as adults, like most farm kids, the Kessenichs grew up participating in agricultural programs such as 4-H and FFA. That involvement led to them actively showing their Jerseys at a variety of local, state and national shows. “Our rst successes in the Jersey breed came at our county fair,” Natalie said. “We had a beautiful cow by the name of Rexlea Historic Carrie. We were both lucky enough to be on the halter of her as she brought home multiple Supreme Champion titles.” Another proud memory for the Kessenichs came in 2008 when Gil-Bar Sparkler Juliann was named the grand champion of the junior show at World Dairy Expo for Wade, giving him the op-

portunity to walk under the spotlights, competing for the supreme champion title on Saturday afternoon. “Success inside the showring has brought us great joy,” Natalie said. “But the friendships and memories that we have made along the way exhibiting at the shows have been even greater.” As their herds grew, Natalie and her sister, Nicki, began registering their animals with the prex Nic-Nat, while Wade chose to use the moniker Buckshot Jerseys. In 2011, the siblings decided to partner up to purchase an animal that could help them follow a new dream of breeding Jerseys with high genetic merit, and they formed the Shot of Nat partnership. “Using the knowledge we had from the showring and our successes from dairy cattle judging, we felt condent in our ability to produce profitable and highly valuable offspring to grow our herd,” Wade said. “We also wanted to provide some nancial diversication through the sales of highly sought-after genetics.” Sunset-Canyon Renegade Anthem was their initial genomic purchase at the All-American Sale in Louisville, Ky. “Anthem opened the door to an entire new world of opportunity for us,” Natalie said. “She ushered us into the genomic era, and we’ve had a lot of success with her and her offspring.” To date, the Shot of Nat partnership has put Turn to KESSENICH | PAGE 37

One of Anthem’s daughters the Kessenichs are having a great deal of success with is JX Shot of Nat Leonel Angelina {4}-ET. Angelina has one son that is an active young sire and numerous daughters and granddaughters ranking among the top genomic animals in the breed. While the Kessenichs are working to build the genomic base of their herd, they have chosen to limit the number of animals they sell privately and at public offering to a few elite females. One highlight of their marketing has been selling the high selling animal at the 2012 Norse Star Summer Hummer sale, Shot of Nat Dominican Lady A-ET to River Valley Farms of Tremont, Ill. Like all young dairy farmers, the Kessenichs are quick to recognize those who have been mentors and helped them along the way. “There have been many inuential people who have helped guide, encourage and support our growth and successes in the Jersey industry,” Wade said. “We have been really grateful for all we have learned from those people.” Both Natalie and Wade have a great sense of appreciation for the life they’ve been given, growing up on a dairy farm and now pursuing dairy
farming careers; and each are happy to be able to afford their own children the same opportunities. “I knew at a very young age what my future would hold,” Wade said. “My love for cows, tractors and the outdoors made me question the need of a public education as a kid. Determination, drive and work ethic was instilled at me in a young age by the example both my parents set. This has been instrumental in every triumph I’ve had in life.” The cousins that make up the next generation of the Kessenich family are becoming involved in the same fashion their parents did, helping their parents with chores around the farm. Both Natalie and Wade have a deep sense of pride, seeing the love of farming and the Jersey cow blossoming in their families. Natalie and Tanner Hughes have daughters, Ava, 9, and Ella, 7, and son Waylon, 2; and Wade and his wife, Jacey, have daughters, Kenley, 7, and Paisley, 5, and son, Ryker, 3. “People who know me would say that Jersey blood is in my veins, from my rst purchase in the Pot of Gold sale to the herd I own today,” Natalie said. “For as long as I can remember, I have been doing chores and feeding calves, and now I’m lucky to see the love for the Jersey breed become apparent in the eyes of my 2-year-old son, Waylon.”

World Dairy Expo is pleased to announce the addition of Fitting & Showmanship Achievement Awards and an Overall Fitter Award to its 2019 youth contests. These new awards will be presented during the WDE Youth Showmanship Contest on Thursday, Oct. 3 in the Coliseum and the Youth Fitting Contest on Sunday, Sept. 29 in the Sale Pavilion, respectively. To be recognized with a Fitting & Showmanship Achievement Award, youth competitors must be one of the top ve nishers in their respective Youth Fitting Contest division and place in the top 15 of their age division in the Youth Showmanship Contest. Meanwhile, the Overall Fitter Award pits the winners of each division against each other to determine the best youth dairy cattle tter of the contest. “We are excited to recognize youth participants on a global scale who have dedicated numerous hours to rening their tting and showmanship skills. Meyers eager to share robotic upgrade experience Richland Dairy featured in virtual farm tour By Jill Traut

KENYON, Minn. – A year after a devastating tornado, the Meyer family, of Richland Dairy, is sharing their story of recovery and improvements through a virtual farm tour during World Dairy Expo. The Meyer family had to make some quick decisions about their future after severe damage to their freestall barn and robotic room from a tornado Sept. 20, 2018. “I remember saying I don’t want anything else,” Samantha Meyer said. “I
want to raise my kids in this life. I love it.” Samantha and her husband, Andrew, farm with Andrew’s parents, Alan and Sharon Meyer, in Kenyon, Minn. Andrew returned to the farm in 2010 after college graduation. It was at that time they did a major expansion; going from milking 42 cows in a stanchion barn to installing two Lely A3 robotic milkers in a new freestall barn. Knowing they were going to continue dairy farming after the tornado, but knowing their facilities could not accommodate milking animals in its current state, the milk cows were moved to two different farms until the Meyers could get back on their feet. A natural disaster left them without milk cows to tend to, and it was that mis-
fortune that actually allowed the Meyers to attend World Dairy Expo for the rst time. “After the storm took the barn last year, and the cows were being cared for at different farms, we took the opportunity to go [to Expo],” Andrew said. “Our main goal was to see the new Lely A5 milking system.” Just 104 days after the tornado, the Meyers rebuilt and were back milking cows at their farm. Having milked with robots for eight years already, the Meyers knew what changes they wanted in the rebuilding process. The same freestall building footprint was kept, but they upgraded to the robots to the A5 model. Major changes were also made to the robot room and fetch pens. “Because of the robot de-
sign, our robot room needed to be larger,” Samantha said. “We also needed to redesign the fetch holding area since we went away from a twopen barn.” The two robots are now accessible to all cows, whereas their old setup had them split into separate pens, only allowing cows from a specic group to use each robot. Cow ow is now much more efcient for the animals and the person doing chores. “One of the greatest benets of having one pen is that if one robot is in use, cows are able to go to the other robot,” Samantha said. “Same goes for chore time with push cows. If your push cow number was uneven you would be sitting waiting for the robot to nish. You could have seven cows on one side and two on
the other.” Enhanced cow ow, coupled with some of the advancements of the new robotic system, has beneted the Meyer’s production. “One of the ways we have increased our production is from simply adding cows,” Samantha said. “Because of some of the new advancements with attaching, and the actual milking process, [the new robots] are faster. Faster milking allows us to run more cows through while still having enough free time.” That free time refers to the availability of the robot. When cows want to get milked they are able to do so, and the shorter the lines, the more production. Turn to MEYERS | Page 2

last 30 years. Inadequate crop establishment and low yields cause production trends to continue declining throughout the United States. John Grabber has a possible solution. Grabber, research agronomist at the United States Dairy Forage Research Center, has studied growing alfalfa and silage corn together to promote full production of alfalfa in subsequent years, while simultaneously getting a crop of silage corn. Grabber’s presentation, “Interseeding Alfalfa into Silage Corn,” will be Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. on the Dairy Forage Seminar stage at World Dairy Expo. Grabber has researched planting alfalfa as a cover crop in corn silage for 10 years. The goal is to establish alfalfa for forage production in following years, while also protecting the soil and nitrates. “Alfalfa and silage are two mainstays in the industry,” Grabber said. “Growing the two in rotation has benets in feed and production, but they also both have weaknesses. Alfalfa is historically low yielding in its establishment years, and corn silage has some environmental issues like nitrate leaching and soil erosion.” By interseeding the two, the alfalfa serves as a cover crop to protect the soil and takes up nitrates. It also establishes the alfalfa’s root system for a better yield in years to come. “We’ve worked it out and using a growth retardant, have been able to allow the alfalfa to establish roots, but not die out as it’s shaded by the corn,” Grabber said. “We also found a fungicide which allows the alfalfa to retain its leaves, so it can capture more sunlight.” Through the years of the experiment, there have been times where corn yield was affected. Researchers combated the problem through adequate nitrogen application. “Most farmers have extra manure, so it’s a matter of applying that generously and anything left over will only help the alfalfa in subsequent years,” Grabber said. Presentation attendees can expect to gain a better understanding of the methods used to achieve two healthy crops at once. While the practices may not be ready for use on every farm, Grabber is hopeful to continue working with extension agents. “It’s always good to get input from the producers,” he said. “It’s maybe not something they’re going to take home and do right away, but it’s denitely on the horizon.” Increasing forage production requires management, and Grabber is condent those willing to manage will have the ability to boost yields and become more protable. “Cover crops can be expensive, and this is a solution that will provide some economic gains, while also practicing good stewardship of the land,” Grabber said. While this trick may not solve all forage growing issues, it is a step towards progress. In a time when less and less alfalfa is being produced and causing ripple effects throughout the industry. “If producers can more effectively manage their forages, and thus feed costs, that’s a great way to stay economic and competitive,” Grabber said.

GAYS MILLS, Wis. – Anyone who has ever donned a pair of white pants and led one of their farm favorites into a show ring has had aspirations of walking out of that ring with championship banners and accolades draped around their favorite lady wearing the show halter. Those dreams and aspirations became a reality for the Kearns family of Tombeth Farms, Gays Mills, Wis., at the 2019 Wisconsin Holstein Championship Show July 9 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. By the end of the day, the Kearns had collected banners including the ďƒžrst
bred and owned cow to be named the Wisconsin championship show grand champion since 2010. Tombeth Farmsis owned and operated by Tom and Beth Kearns and their son, Jason, and his wife, Bailee, and their son, Ryker, 10 months, and is home to 135 registered Holsteins and Jerseys, and another 150 head of heifers. The herd boasts a nearly 22,000-pound rolling herd average and has bred 64 Excellent cows. The star of the day for the Kearns was their homebred cow, Tombeth Linjet Eloise-ET EX-94-2E. She’s a great cow.” Elouise’s show ring success at the state show is not a uke. She is a two-time grand champion of the District 3 Holstein Show and placed 10th in the aged cow class at last year’s World Dairy Expo. Along with her EX-94 maternal sister sired by Shottle, Elouise was nominated all-American in the produce of dam class. Elouise hails from one of the Kearns’ best and most prolic cow families and is one of six Excellent daughters of Tombeth Durham Ellen-ET EX-943E-DOM, and a granddaughter of their well-known Tombeth Jolt Erin-TW EX-94-4E-DOM. Erin has produced eight Excellent daughters, 13 Excellent granddaughters, six Excellent great-granddaughters and has one Excellent great-great granddaughter. As a heifer, Elouise was not a standout in the heifer pens but, true to her breeding, developed into a standout cow. “I always thought her older full sister that is scored EX-93 is the one we’d have had more success showing,” Tom said. “I’d almost call her immature yet for her age. She is so youthful.” Elouise lives in the freestall barn at Tombeth Farms and seems happiest when that is her environment. “She would be happy not being messed with,” Bailee said. “She’d rather just be left to herself in the free stalls with the other cows.” Early the morning of the show, both Jason and Bailee admit they were concerned Elouise might not make enough milk to look her absolute best in the show ring but were relieved when she got to business and started to make more milk as the morning progressed. “Frame-wise, Elouise looked the best she ever had,” Jason said. “I’m glad she turned it on and put it all together. I admit for a while I was nervous.” A near-ritual for Elouise on show day is to make a mess of her tail right before going to the ring, a tradition she maintained as she was being prepared for the state show. “It was really nerve-wracking, as usual we were running late getting to the ring because we had to stop and clean her up,” Bailee said. The other super-star in the Kearns’ show string was Whitehead Doorman Liquor VG-87, a Doorman from Bailee’s family’s herd that was named the reserve all-Wisconsin senior 3 year old and went on to be selected as the reserve intermediate champion of the show. An appropriate wedding gift for a young couple that met at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., Bailee’s dad offered them the pick of his herd as a wedding gift earlier this spring, and Liquor was the choice. “She was one that I had a feeling would be special from the day she was born, and I had shown her as a heifer,” Bailee said. “It wasn’t too hard to make our pick of the herd; she was a pretty obvious choice.” Liquor also represents generations of breeding success in Bailee’s family. She is the daughter of Whitehead Goldsun Lady Di EX-93, a cow Bailee had success showing as a junior member. Liquor had a Sunrose Saturn heifer calf in April. “It was pretty special; my sister Taylor was here at the show and saw her win,” Bailee said. “I sent the banner home with her to share with my dad.” At the end of the show, Jason and Bailee shared the news with those at home. “I texted my dad and told him Liquor was the best wedding present ever,” Bailee said. “I asked Jason if he’d called Tom, and he said he was just getting ready to, and he hoped he was the rst one to get a hold of him.” Tom was in the skidsteer, bedding free stalls when the call came in. “Jason asked me if I was sitting down,” Tom said. There is a lot of satisfaction that comes with the recognition of years of your breeding.” Jason agreed. “It’s an incredible feeling,” Jason said. “One that really can’t be matched.” The Kearns are all quick to credit each other with the success. “Without Jason and Bailee, Elouise would just be another pretty cow out in the free stalls,” Tom said. “She wouldn’t get out to the shows like she does.” Jason and Bailee are grateful for the opportunities afforded to them as a re-
sult of Tom and Beth’s career as breeders and dairy farmers. “Time, labor and money resources are all tight, but we are thankful that we have the support of mom and dad to continue our love of showing,” Jason said. “Both Elouise and Liquor are the result of multiple generations bred and owned by our families, and we are excited to develop the next generations. State show was very encouraging and a good reminder of why we do it, and that breeders and cow families are still important. People need to remember that.”

DARLINGTON, Wis. – Things typically happen for a reason, but sometimes a bit of luck comes into play when breeding registered dairy cattle. With goals and dedication, the basis for Rick Thompson’s Random Luck Farm near Darlington, Wis., is formed. After years of working as a professional tter and then working as a herdsman at Sunshine Genetics in Whitewater, Wis., Thompson made the decision to strike out on his own in the dairy industry. While Thompson did not grow up with Brown Swiss, he opted to start his herd with the breed because of an afnity he developed for the breed while working with top cows at Sunshine Genetics. Brown Swiss cows that primarily hail from two cow families: the Taps family and the Phoebe family. “I was working with some really good Swiss cows at Sunshine, and then I’d walk through the Swiss barn at World Dairy Expo and see that the cows winning on the colored shavings were the bull mothers of the breed,” Thompson said. “It would have been hard not to develop an afnity for Brown Swiss.” Random Luck is also home to an award-winning group of Jerseys
along with elite cows that are using the farm for its boarding service, an enterprise Thompson provides for bovine breeders who need a home for their cattle. Prior to leaving Sunshine Genetics, Thompson purchased one of the two cows that would serve as the foundation of his herd, Sun-Made Jetway Taps 2E92. A granddaughter of Taps, Random Luck B Tea Rose, obtained the breed’s maximum classication score of EX-95 last spring. “Taps ushed extremely well for us and produced those daughters without using any sexed semen,” Thompson said. Random Luck KB Phoebe EX93 is the foundation of Thompson’s second agship cow family. Phoebe was the rst animal carrying the Random Luck prex to be born at the farm in Darlington. While her family is not as large as the Taps family, descendants of the Phoebe family have been as successful in the showring as their herdmates. One of Phoebe’s daughters, Random Luck V Precious EX93, has been nominated allAmerican seven times in her show career and has placed in the top 10 at World Dairy Expo 10 times, in 10 trips to the colored shavings, including a class win, and two second-place and two third-place nishes. Mating decisions are not something Thompson takes lightly, putting a great deal of thought into sire selections for each individual. While udders are a primary focus for Thompson, he also strives to breed cows that are balanced and exude dairy strength. “I denitely put a focus on good udders,” Thompson said. “My dad could never believe there were negative udder component bulls. No one wants to milk bad-uddered cows.” He has placed an increased emphasis on using positive daughter pregnancy rate bulls, noting those genomic numbers seem to breed true in terms of fertility in cows. In general, he picks bulls based strongly on their maternal crosses. “I just want to be able to breed animals that

Of all the showring awards his herd has garnered, Thompson is most proud of the 40 premier breeder banners that hang in his ofce from a variety of state and national Brown Swiss and Jersey shows, including banners from the 2013 and 2015 World Dairy Expo International Brown Swiss shows. Like many registered dairy cattle breeders, Thompson has concerns about the future of both the dairy industry and the breed. “I really feel strongly that to sustain our registered business, we need to focus on keeping the juniors involved in the breed,” Thompson said. Thompson has given many years of service to the Wisconsin State Brown Swiss Association serving on the board of directors, including several terms as president. He is also a supporter of Brown
Swiss youth programs and works as an advisor for the queen contest. Thompson said educating consumers about dairy farming and dairy products is also important for the future of the industry. A perennial exhibitor at the Wisconsin State Fair, Thompson sees the experience as a way to connect with the public, showing how well cared for dairy cows are and sharing knowledge about the industry. “In order to make ourselves continue to be viable, we have to be willing to produce what our consumers want,” Thompson said. “Whether it is the consumer of dairy products or the consumer of your breeding program, you have to make what the market demands.”

With these two cow families anchoring his breeding program, Thompson has had the good fortune to have bred or developed over 100 allAmerican nominations. Random Luck B Tea Rose EX95 was recently nominated all-American in the aged cow class, marking her fourth consecutive nomination in milking form. She joins three of her herdmates in that feat: Random Luck Prem Talent EX93, Random Luck S Peekaboo EX92 and Random Luck Legacy Poetry EX93. Random Luck is a name heard over the loudspeaker at the Wisconsin State Fair, as over 32 Random Luck-bred Brown Swiss and Jersey cows have been named grand champion or reserve grand champion. Thompson has also bred 13 cows to capture grand or reserve grand champion honors at various national shows.
