Fulfilling a dream Thyen reects on past year as SD Dairy Princess

By Krista M. Sheehan Staff Writer WAVERLY, Minn. – Being a dairy princess has always been a dream of Natalie Thyen’s.

“I used to put my mom’s crown and sash on, ride on the tractor with my dad and wave to the cows,” Thyen said about her younger years while growing up on her family’s farm near Waverly, S.D. The 20-year-old’s dream came true last year at the Central Plains Dairy Expo when she was crowned the 2011 South Dakota Dairy Princess. With the 2012 Expo approaching, she is preparing to give up her crown and title.

“It’s kind of sad,” said Thyen, the daughter of dairy farmers, Dan and Becky Thyen. “I’ve had a lot of fun this year.”

During her year-long reign, Thyen has been out and about at appearances across the state.

“I had a lot of visits to educate youth on the importance of dairy products and what they can do for your body,” Thyen said.

She spent time with young athletes encouraging them to drink chocolate milk after exercising. Her favorite appearances, though, were the classrooms she visited.

“The kids get so excited. One girl said she hadn’t been this close to a princess before,” Thyen said. “I just love educating the youth.”

Many of the children Thyen visits want to know how dairy products are made, Thyen said. They also have many other questions, such as how much cheese can be made from the milk Thyen’s family’s bulk tank holds.

“I had to go back and ask my dad that one,” Thyen said. “But I like all the questions they ask.”

On the Thyen family’s farm, they milk 120 registered Holsteins with a few Milking Shorthorns, Brown Swiss and two Jerseys.

Another highlight of her reign was meeting and handing out ice cream to Dennis Daugaard, South Dakota’s governor, along with many legislators. Other appearances included attending and talking to people at health fairs, ice cream socials, parades, dairy shows, county breakfasts, town festivals and World Dairy Expo.

“I really like getting out there and telling people about the industry,” Thyen said. “I enjoyed everything about being the Dairy Princess.”

Thyen said when she went out to talk to people, they were surprised the state had a dairy princess and were eager to learn more about dairy.

“We’re a smaller dairy farming state … but it’s important to know dairy is important for everyone – young and old,” Thyen said.

In addition to educating others on dairy products, Thyen wanted to spread the message of the great care farmers give their animals.

“We care for our animals a lot. On our farm, they get put before us. When we get up in the morning we make sure they have a comfortable place to live, good living conditions and healthy feed,” Thyen said. “We also work with veterinarians and nutritionists to help keep animals healthy to produce such a high quality product.”

Although being Dairy Princess was for the benet of others, Thyen said the

role made a personal impact on her.

“It made me realize just how important the dairy industry is and that there are a lot of people who don’t know much about it,” Thyen said.

It also helped her improve her public speaking skills.

“Getting up in front of crowds really helped me,” Thyen said.

Thyen helps with chores on her fam ily’s farm when not working at her full time job at an eye clinic in Watertown S.D. “I don’t miss out on a lot of chores a the farm,” Thyen said.

Area Technical Institute with a medical assistant degree. Although her job is not directly involved in the dairy or agriculture, she said she wants to continue educating people about the importance of dairy even when not wearing the crown.

“I plan on being a nurse someday so then I can keep telling people about the

calcium they can get just by [drinking] a glass of milk,” Thyen said.

Thyen said living on a dairy and being South Dakota Dairy Princess has helped her develop into the person she is today and who she will be in the future.

“Dairy is a great industry to be in,” Thyen said.

Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/ or work on, and your future plans. I am from Milbank, S.D. My family consists of my parents, Bryon and Jennifer, and my sister, Samantha.

I have several dairy heifers and cows that are raised and milked at Victory Farms. I used to work at Davelaar Dairy in northwest Iowa until my family and I moved to Milbank. I plan on going to South Dakota State University for pre-veterinary and a minor in Spanish.

Tell us a unique story that you have from growing up on a farm. When I worked for Mark Davelaar, I had to milk cows and feed calves. One afternoon when I was milking, I couldn’t get a cow up that had just calved so I called Mark to help me. He thought she had milk fever so he called the veterinarian to come treat her. The vet discovered she had another calf to deliver. Because the calf had died in the womb, the vet had to surgically remove it. I stayed and watched. The vet asked me “Do you want to be a vet?” My reply was “Well of course!” He then said “We will see after we are nished with this!” Afterwards he asked if I still wanted to be a vet. The vet’s doubt of me becoming a vet and changing my mind after watching the surgery has made me want to become a vet even more.

What do you think are the biggest concerns consumers have about dairy products and how would you address these topics? Consumers don’t know much about rBST. I would address this issue by telling consumers that studies have been done and have proved that with the correct treatment the hormone percentages are not much higher than an animal not treated with hormones.

Explain one message/fact you think consumers today don’t realize about the dairy industry. The technology in the dairy industry has helped produce safe food more efciently to make it more affordable. Most uninformed consumers don’t know these technological advances in the dairy industries are good. In the long run all technology helps produce more milk and doesn’t harm the animals at all.

What kind of dairy facts and information would you give to a person who was thinking about becoming a vegan? I would tell a person who is thinking about becoming a vegan that dairy cows produce milk that is real and fresh whereas imitation milk might not have the same ingredients.

Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/ or work on, and your future plans. I live on a dairy farm south of Waubay, S.D. My family stays very busy with it because we have dairy cattle, beef cattle, swine and sheep. I am active in several clubs, school activities and my church youth group. I am a “go-getter” and take pride in knowing I am active in my community. I am going to Lake Area Technical Institute to pursue a degree in human services. I would like to help children with special needs.

Tell us a unique story that you have from growing up on a farm. A unique event I encountered was when one of our cattle had a two-headed calf. It was one of the craziest things that I’ve ever seen! People came from all over Day County to see the calf. It was sad though because in three days it passed away. A local taxidermist wanted to mount the calf’s head to keep in mind its signicance of this bizarre event.

What do you think are the biggest concerns consumers have about dairy products and how would you address these topics? I think the biggest problem people have with the dairy industry are the false accusations. I would ensure consumers that milk goes through strict quality controls to ensure freshness, purity and great taste.

Explain one message/fact you think consumers today don’t realize about the dairy industry. I don’t think consumers realize the number of small family farms being pushed out of production because of larger competition. Between 1970 and 2006, the number of farms with dairy cows fell steadily and sharply, from 648,000 operations in 1970 to 75,000 in 2006, or 88 percent. Small farms accounted for nearly 30 percent of all operations with milk cows in 2006, but had only two percent of all cows and provided just over one percent of total dairy production. This is a problem in my eyes. I think small dairy farms can help stimulate our economy.

What kind of dairy facts and information would you give to a person who was thinking about becoming a vegan? I would inform them that milk and other dairy products are essential nutrients in our everyday appetite. Dairy is full of calcium, magnesium, potassium and proteins. They all help maintain a healthy body for an active life style.

I am a sophomore at SDSU studying music education. The 1,000-cow dairy I live on with my family is located northeast of Brookings. I live on campus, but enjoy going home on weekends to help on the farm and see my family. My future plans include becoming a music teacher and encouraging my students to participate in the Fuel Up To Play 60 program.

Tell us a unique story that you have from growing up on a farm. My favorite memory of growing up on a farm would be playing in the hay stacks. My brothers and I would climb up on the smaller hay bales, make forts and play in them.

I know I became close to my family by growing up on a farm and am thankful for that.

What do you think are the biggest concerns consumers have about dairy products and how would you address these topics? I think the biggest concerns consumers have about dairy products is the safety of dairy products. There are so many programs such as the FARM (Farmers Assuring Responsible Management and regulations out there to ensure a quality product. Farmers take good care of their animals and want to produce a healthy product for the consumer. In order to do that, the farmer has to take care of the animals. Most farmers schedule regular checkups for a veterinarian to look over the herd and work with a professional nutritionist to specically formulated diet for the cows. With a cow being healthy and in good shape, the product is guaranteed to deliver smiles to consumers.

Explain one message/fact you think consumers today don’t realize about the dairy industry. One fact I think consumers don’t realize about the dairy industry is how incredibly important it is for this country and the whole world. The dairy industry provides so many jobs for this country and is part of a well rounded economy. Another reason is the dairy products, and their importance to people’s diets. Milk and other dairy products provide so many key nutrients for a healthy balanced diet.

What kind of dairy facts and information would you give to a person who was thinking about becoming a vegan? I would tell them how important animal products are for a person’s diet. The meat and milk products provide many important nutrients for a healthy balanced diet. Without it, a person would have to take many vitamins and supplements just to make up for the lack of meat and dairy products.

Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I grew up on a dairy farm south of Nunda, where we milk 75 dairy cows, farm 600 acres of crops, own 200 acres of pasture and raise 120 stock cows. I help milk in our double-8 swing parlor and our cows are housed in a hoop barn. I also work at Watertown Holsteins. I help milk cows in their 90-cow tiestall barn and do other jobs that need to be done. I plan to stay in the dairy industry throughout my life. I am currently attending Lake Area Technical Institute for Large Animal Technician and Dairy.

Tell us a unique story that you have from growing up on a farm. We once had an orphan Canadian pet goose that my family had found out in a eld. Speedy, the goose, followed my brothers and me around the yard like a dog. We got to feed it, watch it grow and watch him y.

What do you think are the biggest concerns consumers have about dairy products and how would you address these topics? I think consumers are concerned about rBST (recombinant bovine somatotropin hormone) being used to increase milk production in cows and the well-being of the animals. I would inform the consumers with facts and studies about how rBST is a natural hormone in cows, it is safe, and not every dairy farmer uses it. rBST is a management tool used by some farmers to help increase milk producing efciency so more milk can be produced with fewer resources. I would inform the consumer that milk from cows treated with rBST is no different than milk from cows not treated with rBST. Dairy farmers take great care of their animals to ensure they are healthy and comfortable. I would inform the consumers about FARM (Farmers Assuring Responsible Management) and how the program provides farmers with education on proper animal care.

Explain one message/fact you think consumers today don’t realize about the dairy industry. All dairy farmers, regardless of their farms’ size or ownership, follow strict regulations and best management practices for the health of their families, their cows and their neighbors. All milk from the dairy farmers is tested for antibiotics and other drug residues to ensure that all dairy foods are safe and wholesome. During 2010, almost four million tests were conducted and less than 0.03 percent were positive. Any milk test that comes back positive cannot be sold to the public, so therefore people should know milk is safe to drink.

What kind of dairy facts and information would you give to a person who was thinking about becoming a vegan? Dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt deliver incomparable nutrition, value and taste to your diet. Dollar for dollar, dairy foods are one of the most economical sources of nutrition as they provide nine essential nutrients. Milk and cheese are the leading source of calcium in the diet. You would have to eat three cups of cooked broccoli to equal the calcium in one cup of milk. Furthermore, an 8-ounce serving of low-fat plain yogurt contains 490-milligrams of potassium, approximately the same as a banana.

Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I am an 18 year-old freshman at South Dakota State University, double-majoring in agricultural education and agricultural business. I grew up on a small family dairy farm south of Webster, S.D., with registered Holstein and Brown Swiss cattle. My future plans are to graduate college and nd a job teaching secondary agricultural education classes in the Midwest. I also plan to pursue politics at the local and state levels, and own a small herd of cattle.

Tell us a unique story that you have from growing up on a farm. One story I’ll never forget took place in elementary school when I was feeding bottle calves. One of the Holstein calves was particularly ornery, and I leaned too close to the bottle. When the calf got rowdy and knocked the bottle backwards, it hit me right in the mouth and knocked out one of my teeth!

What do you think are the biggest concerns consumers have about dairy products and how would you address these topics? Some of the biggest concerns consumers have today about dairy products and their food supply are the use of hormones (such as rBST) and GMOs (genetically modied organisms). Many people like using the latest technology in other aspects of life, but when “technology” and “food” are mentioned together, people get worried. The disconnect between consumers and food products is a prominent issue facing agriculture today.

Since one farmer can produce enough food for 155 people, less people are working in production agriculture, and are understanding less about where their food comes from. Addressing these topics is essential. In America, we have one of the safest, and the dairy industry is no exception. We need to be proactive in getting the word out about our industry and let people know that we produce a safe product, using humane practices, before other organizations give them information that may not be completely true.

Explain one message/fact you think consumers today don’t realize about the dairy industry. Understanding that the milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products we all enjoy are made humanely and safely is one of the biggest concerns I believe consumers on a national level don’t understand. Again, the disconnect between consumers and their food causes a need for educating citizens about where their dairy products comes from, how they are made and the benets dairy products have for them. We have to work hard to get the truth out about our safe, nutritious dairy products and the dairy industry.

What kind of dairy facts and information would you give to a person who was thinking about becoming a vegan? People become vegans for different reasons, but two of the main reasons are 1. They believe it is inhumane to consume/use animal products, and 2. They believe it is healthy to become a vegan, especially when trying to lose weight. Informing them about how dairy products are produced in a safe, humane manner would be the message I would try to get across to people who believed it was inhumane to consume animal products. For people becoming vegan for health reasons, I would explain that milk contains nine essential nutrients needed for our health and well-being, and emphasize that milk can actually aid in weight loss.

Melissa Zemlicka Parents: Daron and Valerie Zemlicka Town: Watertown County: Codington Tell us about yourself, the farm you live and/or work on, and your future plans. I grew up on a tiestall/stanchion, 50-cow dairy farm while also raising sheep and stock cows near Waverly. I am currently living in Brookings when I am not helping out on the farm, and I am a junior at Colorado Technical University in Sioux Falls/ online for Healthcare Administration. After my college graduation, my goal is to work in a local hospital and live on and still be involved with the family farm.

Tell us a unique story that you have from growing up on a farm. When I was in high school, I woke up early to milk cows and feed calves before school and after sport practices.

Dad was happy when I made the varsity teams in basketball and volleyball as a freshman because this allowed me to do plenty of chores before the game even started. One game in particular, one girl on the team apologized for smelling like livestock because her chores were running late, and she had no time to shower before the game. The funny thing was that a few other girls (including me) admitted to the same thing. I can’t imagine what the other team thought of us that night!

What do you think are the biggest concerns consumers have about dairy products and how would you address these topics? Customers need to be more informed about hormones and antibiotics. I would assure the consumer that hormones naturally occur less than one percent in the milk whether the cow was given rBST or not. rBST is digested by the cow’s body just like a protein. If the consumer is concerned about drinking milk from cows given rBST, they may choose to purchase milk from cows not given it at all. For antibiotics, I would assure customers that the plant where the milk is shipped doesn’t accept any milk with any traces of medicine. In this instance, the farmer would not get paid, and would be responsible for the cost of milk that wasn’t able to be used.

Explain one message/fact you think consumers today don’t realize about the dairy industry. I do not think consumers realize how much regulation goes on from when the milk leaves the cow until it arrives at the grocery store. Consumers should understand they are buying one of the most regulated products in the United States. If the milk doesn’t meet the Federal, European Union, or even plant standards, the milk is denied and the farmer doesn’t get paid. I believe once the public truly understands how much care the farmer gives to the cattle to ensure a healthy and safe product, the consumer will be more satised with the end result.

What kind of dairy facts and information would you give to a person who was thinking about becoming a vegan? Those who are thinking about becoming a vegan have to understand how having dairy products is part of a balanced diet. For those who are becoming a vegan because they are against the ethical treatment of animals, I would tell them that 99 percent of farms are family owned. The cows are treated with care, because healthy cows produce more quality milk. If one is becoming a vegan to lose weight, they need to realize they need to get nutrients that a typical vegetarian diet can’t provide such as Vitamin B12 and calcium, to name a few. Low fat or skim dairy products are great to aid people in weight loss.

Fat-free chocolate milk available in happy meals at McDonald’s® USA

Familiar family favorite will be available in all 14,000 restaurants by the end of March National Dairy Council applauds McDonald’s efforts to enhance the nutritional content of its new Happy Meal. The new Happy Meal automatically includes about a 14 cup of Apple Slices and new smaller size French fry as sides to the choice of a Hamburger, Cheeseburger or Chicken McNuggets, and a choice of beverage, including new fat-free chocolate milk and 1% low-fat white milk. As a part of the new Happy Meal roll out, McDonald’s new fat-free chocolate milk with about 20 percent fewer calories and 10 percent less sugar than McDonald’s 1% low-fat chocolate milk is expected to be available at all McDonald’s restaurants by the end of March.

“At McDonald’s, we are committed to the many families we serve and we want to help families make balanced choices,” said Cynthia Goody, Ph.D., R.D., McDonald’s senior director of nutrition. “The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate recommend that individuals increase their intake of fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.”

McDonald’s collaborated with National Dairy Council and Dairy Research Institute® to develop a new fatfree chocolate milk.

While National Dairy Council – supported by America’s dairy farmers – has been working to improve the health of school meals for decades (most recently through its Fuel Up to Play 60

nutrition and physical activity partnership with the NFL as well as industry efforts to reduce fat, sugar and calories in school milk), the current state of childhood obesity demands partnership, innovation and initiative beyond home kitchens and school cafeterias.

“Our work with schools has shown us time and time again that foods are only healthy if kids eat them,” said Jean Ragalie, R.D., president of National Dairy Council. “That’s why chocolate milk is such an important part of improving child nutrition – kids enjoy it while at the same time getting the essential nutrients it provides, including calcium, protein, vitamin D, and much more.”

Since 2006, McDonald’s has supported the Council of Better Business Bureaus’ Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, which includes a voluntary “food pledge” to advertise nationally balanced food and beverage choices. For the rst time ever, McDonald’s fat-free chocolate milk will be shown as part of the Happy Meal in advertising because the meals featured will meet the new, more rigorous nutritional criteria.
