While I may be hanging up my sash and retiring my crown after Aug. 22, I will never stop sharing my dairy story. From the 4-year-old who shared some not so glamorous facts about dairy farming to her preschool class, to serving Minnesota’s dairy community as Princess Kay, I have never hesitated to speak on behalf of dairy. Now, I have another chapter to add to my dairy story.

Thank you, Minnesota’s dairy farmers, for the hard work you put in on your farm each and every day. It has truly

been an honor to represent you. I have enjoyed having the opportunity to meet many of you throughout my time as Princess Kay. Your time is incredibly valuable, and I am grateful for all who have taken the time to share their own dairy stories. For the last time as the 64th Princess Kay of the Milky Way, thank you. It has been a great year.

Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Emily Annexstad, serves as the Minnesota dairy community’s goodwill ambassador.

Throughout the year, Princess Kay helps people understand the dedication of dairy farmers to

wholesome and nutritious food, and the way milk is produced.

Princess Kay does many school presentations, represents dairy farmers at the Fuel Up To Play 60 events that are held in conjunction with the Minnesota Vikings, and is very active during June Dairy Month sharing the importance of dairy farming and dairy foods.

Emily and her family own and operate a dairy farm in St. Peter, Minnesota. She is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota studying animal science and agricultural communications and marketing. She enjoys reading, playing and watching sports, and showing cattle.

65th Princess Kay of the Milky Way AUG. 22, 2018 • 8 P.M. CORONATION OF 65TH PRINCESS KAY MINNESOTA STATE FAIR BAND SHELL • FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Who will be the next Princess Kay?

Princess Kay of the Milky Way is the official goodwill ambassador for Minnesota’s dairy industry. Throughout her yearlong reign, she participates in numerous public appearances, promotional events and media interviews.

Twelve county dairy princesses are vying for the title of Princess Kay after

being selected as finalists during a statewide competition held in May. They will be judged on their communication skills, general knowledge of the dairy industry, personality and enthusiasm for dairy promotion.

One young woman will receive the coveted Princess Kay title and begin her immediate duties on opening day of the

fair by having her likeness carved in a 90-pound block of butter. The other candidates will also have their likenesses carved in butter during the remaining days of the fair.

The Princess Kay contest is funded by dairy farmers through the dairy checkoff, to help increase demand for dairy.

Daughter of Dan and Kathie Broll. Amy will start her junior year at Winona State University this fall where she is studying cell and molecular biology. She hopes to become a dentist after graduating from dental school. Her hobbies include being outdoors where she hikes, canoes, kayaks and spends time with friends.

Daughter of Travis and Annette Reimers. She is an employee of Scotch Prairie Farms. Blaize will be a sophomore this fall at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where she studies agriculture business and dairy science. She is active in her campus dairy club and enjoys coaching volleyball, fishing, kayaking, writing, showing and judging dairy cattle.

Daughter of Scott and Denise Gathje.

Katherine will be a sophomore at the University of Minnesota this fall studying agricultural communication and marketing. Her hobbies include baking, showing dairy cattle, speaking Spanish and spending time with family.

She loves to travel, read, write, work with animals and make new memories.

Megan recently graduated from Ridgewater College with a degree in dairy management and is employed on her family farm. She is a 4-H volunteer, a Ridgewater agriculture ambassador, serves on the Morrison County fair board and was involved with professional agriculture student (PAS) organization.

Daughter of Rod and Naomi Lindquist.

She will be a junior this fall at the University of North Dakota where she studies airport management. She enjoys being active with mission trips through her church, flying planes, spending time outdoors, reading and playing piano.

Daughter of Cal and Char Lubben. She studies dairy production at South Dakota State University where she will be a sophomore this fall. She hopes to one day own a hobby farm and be a dairy consultant. Calissa enjoys being outdoors where she can bike, run and hike.

Daughter of Stacy and Julie Miller. Melendy will be a junior this fall at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where she studies dairy science. After graduation, she plans to go back to the family farm. Melendy enjoys gardening, hiking, reading and raising bull calves with her sister during the summer.

Daughter of Al and Lynette Mullenbach. Julia studies dairy science at Iowa State University where she will be a sophomore this fall. She has a passion for dancing and volunteers as a dance coach to youth and high school dance teams. She is active in her campus dairy science club as well as the Minnesota and National Brown Swiss Associations.

Daughter of Alan and Vicki Paskewitz. She is an employee at Thunder Valley Farms.

Rebekka will be a junior this fall at South Dakota State University where she studies agricultural education. After graduation, she plans to become an agricultural educator. Rebekka enjoys graphic design, public speaking, raising beef cattle and road trips.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy? While I was studying in South Africa, I met a girl who was adamant that animals were not being treated justly. I was in a foreign country far from my family and the dairy community, so I didn’t need to be a voice for the dairy farmers. But as I sat and listened to her, I thought to myself, “I need to share what I know. I need to show her another perspective.” So I did. I told her stories about growing up on a dairy farm. I told her about my experiences on other dairy farms, and I told her about all the dedication that we have put into keeping our land and animals healthy. Then I encouraged her to visit dairy farms to see for herself how things are done. In this experience I learned that being a dairy advocate can be done without the princess title. It’s spoken from the heart, and that day my heart spoke louder words than my mouth.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? Dairy farmers wake up each morning, work alongside veterinarians and milk haulers, to give breakfast to our cows, milk them, monitor their health and ensure their comfort so that they can produce the delicious milk that shows up on your table just in time for breakfast.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? My aunt Barb Grimm and Theresa Feist. My aunt served on the ADA board and is the local dairy princess coordinator. She encouraged me to get involved in the dairy ambassador program when I was 12. Theresa was instrumental in starting that program. As a dairy ambassador, I got to see what dairy princesses did. I enjoyed going to events with the local dairy princesses. Once I was a senior in high school, I applied and became a dairy princess. Theresa passed away in 2008, but I have been inuenced by her memory. She poured her heart and soul into the dairy community and dairy promotion. It is aweinspiring, and I aspire to have my passion for the dairy community create long-lasting effects on those around me. It has been an awesome experience, and I like sharing what I know and love about the dairy community and the dedicated dairy farmers who work hard to provide us with delicious dairy foods.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. My campaign would be “Milking your curiosity: A day in the life for dairy farmers.” I would post photos with short, minimal captions on Instagram. The idea would be transparency and letting the picture tell the story. Some photos could be facts about certain dairy foods. Others may be recipes and most would be about the daily life of a dairy farmer.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? I see the dairy community becoming even more innovative than it is now, and we will continue to take excellent care of our cows. This care will keep them producing nutritious milk on land we maintain by following sustainable practices. I will take the knowledge I gained of dairy nutrition and incorporate it into my career as a dentist by encouraging my dental patients to get the daily recommended amount of dairy to maintain strong teeth and healthy smiles.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Amy is approachable, witty, poised, considerate and speaks well. She is dedicated to a goal, and she makes a strong, positive rst impression. Amy has an intuition about people individually and as a group. This will help her deliver a message tailored to each targeted audience. When you add this ability to read her audience to these strengths, that is what would make her an excellent Princess Kay.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy? I have truly enjoyed getting to tell people my story and how I became involved with the dairy community. I love being able to speak from both the farmer and consumer side of the spectrum. One of my favorite memories is meeting a young girl while working the malt stand who asked me, “If you’re a princess, where is your prince and castle?” After she asked me this, I had the opportunity to tell her that my extra time was spent in the barn caring for my animals rather than in a castle. This young girl was ecstatic about this answer and went on to tell her whole family about it. She now believes she doesn’t need a prince or a castle to be a princess or make a difference in her community either.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? Dairy farms in the United States are 97 percent family owned. The dairy community relies on strong family values to take care of the cattle every day. Just like your families, we want nutritious and safe food products available to everyone. Our families consume the same products available on the market today. We always try our hardest to provide safe, healthy and affordable options to families all over the world.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess?

My grandpa always told me stories about the days when he farmed. Those stories and memories are what initially sparked my interest to become involved in the dairy community. I started showing cattle at 9 years old. My grandpa and my mother both worked together and helped me understand the meaning of hard work, dedication, passion and selessness. When my grandpa passed away in 2015, I was determined to continue spreading the love and values of dairy. In one of the last conversations I had with him, he told me, “Blaize, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

Those words continue to push me and motivate me to do my best.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. I would start a Facebook page that encourages people to share their favorite dairy related stories, favorite dairy products or pictures of them with cattle or dairy foods. Every day, I would set up a giveaway that consists of dairy products and Midwest Dairy clothing apparel. I would also offer a question and answer section that encourages the consumer to ask farmers direct questions. This would give consumers and dairy enthusiasts the opportunity to share stories and common interests.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? I think the future of dairy is a positive one.

The dairy community is lled with positive, optimistic, hardworking and genuine people. Through times of struggle, everyone is so supportive to one another. After I nish my degree, I hope to work for a genetics company. I also want to raise show cattle for local youth in my community to show. There are people who have helped me get where I am today, and I want to offer that same opportunity to other young adults.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Blaize would be the perfect Princess Kay of the Milky Way. She has an admirable drive to make a difference in her community and has an excellent work ethic. Blaize’s growing passion for the dairy community and her communication skills would help her exceed the expectations. She has a strong desire to meet new people and explore adventures while telling her story. Everyone around her notices how much love she has for the dairy community and her passion never goes unnoticed.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy?

Last fall, I had the opportunity to travel to Hartford, Ala., as part of the Peanut Butter and Milk, Litcheld-Hartford Sister City Exchange Program. I was able to tour different sectors of Alabama agriculture and share my story of growing up on a dairy farm and serving as a dairy princess. Dairy farms are scarce in that part of Alabama so it was a great opportunity to give those people a chance to meet someone who is directly involved in dairy farming.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy?

After reading to children at a local library, a mother came up and asked me a question about sugar in chocolate milk. I explained to her how nutrient-dense chocolate milk was, and she continued asking questions about various dairy topics. We spoke about dairy farming and dairy foods for half an hour, so it was the most in-depth conversation I had had with a consumer about dairy at that point. It was amazing, and it made me proud to be a dairy princess.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? I enjoy using stories to give people an image of what we really do on our farms. I love to share the stories of me and my family staying up until 10 or 11 at night to help deliver a calf and how my parents are back outside at 5:30 a.m. to milk the cows again. I also talk about how we feed the milk from our cows back to our calves, and we enjoy drinking milk and consuming dairy foods so we take many precautions to ensure the milk is the best tasting and as safe as it can be.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? Dairy farmers care about their cows, land and communities. Every decision we make is based on this care and what’s best for our animals and supporters. Because of this, you can rest assured that the milk, cheese and other dairy foods you love are wholesome, nutritious and safe.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? All the dairy princesses before me. The dairy princess program in Minnesota has been a tradition for 65 years, and I am honored to have to opportunity to carry on the tradition. Much the same, dairy farming is a tradition that has been passed on for many generations which is why I take pride in the fact that my family spends our days milking and caring for our cows.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. I would use Instagram and the hashtag #DairyAnytime. I would show the ways to enjoy dairy foods. I would also encourage others to show the ways they mix up their dairy intake to expand the reach of the campaign. I would especially encourage athletes and parents of young kids to share their stories since this would be two very good audiences to target for the campaign.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? Dairy farming will continue to change rapidly in the next few years. Dairy farmers will continue to adjust to stay viable. Technology will continue to nd its way into more dairy farms and in some unexpected places. I hope to promote dairy farming in the form of working for a cooperative or check-off organization.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Katherine grew to appreciate growing up on a dairy farm as she became more involved with agriculture groups such as 4-H, FFA and MJHA. This led to her becoming involved in the dairy community and more specically the dairy princess program.

Katherine seeks opportunities to serve the entire agriculture community and especially the dairy community. She enjoys the state fair and interacting with fairgoers to show and tell dairy’s story. She would be honored to serve Minnesota’s dairy farmers as the 65th Princess Kay.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? My mom has been my biggest role model. She has been involved in the Carver County American Dairy Association and the Carver County Dairy Princess Program since I was a baby, so I grew up watching her and the county dairy princesses representing my family and all the other farm families in my county. Because of this, I wanted to be a dairy advocate before I could even pronounce the word.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. Dairy farmers work around the clock to take care of their cows, so I would create a campaign on Instagram called #dairyallday. It would encourage dairy farmers to post time-stamped photos of milking and other chores to showcase how much time they dedicate to their animals. The other half of the campaign would focus on how dairy can be present all day at every meal. It would encourage everyone to post photos of meals, snacks and recipes that include dairy.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? The dairy industry’s future is guided by its core: passion, dedication and care. We are always nding new ways to better care for our cows and use our land sustainably so we can pass it on to the next generation. No matter what new technologies or practices we develop, we will always stay true to this. I am proud of my dairy farming background and will be a lifelong advocate for the dairy community, even when I no longer wear a crown.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? We can see how much she truly enjoys being a dairy princess. She connects well with people of all ages and backgrounds and enjoys interacting with them.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy?

Since I am taking over my family’s dairy farm, I get the opportunity to share that with consumers, and I always get a wow effect from them.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? In every ounce of milk is a promise that the product you are consuming is clean, safe and wholesome.

Farmers work hard every day to ensure the product we put out on the market for everyone to enjoy is held to the highest of purity and quality standards possible.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? My mom, Debbie Hollermann, has been one of the most encouraging and empowering people in my life. Whenever I wanted to throw the towel in, my mom was always there to encourage me through it. She has denitely shaped me into the young lady I am today.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. I would use Facebook or Twitter. The healthy, clean and clear choice. Milk provides nine essential nutrients in every serving of milk. Dairy farmers work hard every day to ensure dairy foods are safe for our consumers. The choice to consume dairy foods is the healthy choice because it is vital in a healthy diet.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy? I was sitting in class on the rst day of the semester. A lot of times professors make the class say their name, hometown and a fun fact about ourselves, so naturally, mine is the fact that I am a dairy princess. As an aviation student, there are a lot of Middle Eastern, Eastern Asian and big city students in my classes and this has led to people asking questions as to what dairy is or what my role as a dairy princess is. This particular day, there were several kids who had no idea what dairy was and I got to have a mini session where I talked about my farm, what we do, what I do as a princess, what goals dairy farmers across America try to reach and what my favorite dairy foods are. I loved the fact that I could take my passion for dairy to a whole new level of people who I would not ordinarily communicate with.

That made me an exceedingly proud advocate for the dairy community.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? When it comes to trusting dairy farmers, I want people to know that dairy farmers are the hardest working and passionate people I know. They put their heart and soul into caring for their land and animals and that does not come easy. Everything a farmer does, they are doing it for the ice cream, yogurt and cheese eaters of the world. Dairy farmers all have a shared goal, and that is to put a tasty, quality good on the kitchen table and that kind of goal is only successful when they have the passion for it.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? My parents have shown me the value of farming and have taught me to be responsible, passionate and respectful of not only what we do on the farm but also how we show that work to the world. I would not be in this position today without my parents pushing me to reach my full potential.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? I see us continuing to make and utilize innovative, be sustainable and use ground breaking technology to continue to be better than we were before. I also hope that with programs like 4-H, FFA and dairy princess, we nally get to a point of little to no consumer misconceptions. I see myself at the forefront on my family’s farm doing better than we did yesterday.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. My dairy campaign would consist of bright, fun photos, a hashtag to get people involved and a call to action in each post. I would use items to catch peoples’ eye and get them engaged in the message so people would be more responsive and active in eating dairy foods. My page would post cute pictures with a quick message on the nutritious value of dairy whether that be through a food item I ate that day, a recipe or a way to see how others use dairy. I would use #MilkinIt and invite people to use it so I can see how my community and the dairy community is getting excited about dairy.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Her passion for the industry is phenomenal. Her ability to communicate with the farmers and consumers both young and mature is amazing. Anyone who has ever had a conversation with Megan has heard her passion for what she is: The next generation of the dairy industry.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? The future of dairy is strong. The dairy community has an upcoming generation that shows they are passionate, ready to work and has world changing ideas. The future of dairy depends on these young adults because they are tomorrow’s farmers learning today. I plan on staying in my role as an advocate for as long as I can. Advocacy doesn’t need a title or have to be part of a job, but I have a passion for dairy and dairy farming, and I hope to continue my efforts of advocating for this community to the best of my ability.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Korissa has the ability to relate to people and talk about the benets of drinking milk and eating dairy foods. She can visit with seniors while serving ice cream and enjoys answering questions that come from any age at an event or parade. She enjoys bantering with the farmers about the work they enjoy and do for our communities. We have enjoyed watching Korissa learn through the experiences she has had. Having Korissa be able to communicate with anybody helps spread the importance of dairy throughout the state of Minnesota.

Since being crowned dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy? Growing up in an agriculture community and then going to a college where fellow students were raised with different backgrounds made me realize there are misconceptions about the dairy community. One misconception that I heard while having a conversation with someone was that dairy farmers pump antibiotics into their cattle, and as a dairy farmer myself I was shocked when I heard this. Dairy farmers are constantly putting their animals rst, and when one gets ill the farmer works alongside the vet to make the best decision how to get this animal to feel better.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy? I was at the Minnesota State Fair with my dairy cow.

It was my turn to watch the animals to make sure they stayed clean. As I was catching manure on my shovel from one of the animals, some fairgoers started clapping. I was slightly confused and decided I should talk to them. I went over and asked if they had questions for me, as I am a dairy farmer. They said they were from the city and had never been on a farm in their life. I had a conversation with them that lasted over half an hour. When they left, I knew they were more informed about dairy, as they heard my dairy story, and I made a difference in the dairy community.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? If dairy farmers like myself didn’t trust the food our cows produced, we wouldn’t eat it, but since we do trust it and believe it is good for our health we consume it and so should you.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? Dairy farmers do things for both their communities and their families. The animals on my farm are treated like family. They all have names and get personal attention each and every day. The milk produced is used to help feed my family and others in the community no matter the form. It could be bottled milk, cheese or even yogurt. I would encourage you to support your local dairy farmers, as they are always working to support you.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess?

Both of my parents. They have taught me valuable lessons growing up on the farm.

My mother has taught me how to be the best mother I can be to our calves. She showed me how to give out tender, loving care to the new creations on our farm every day. My father has shown me what it looks like to never give up. He has taught me how to keep on trying even when you don’t get it right the rst time. I started using this lesson when I was a young girl trying to gure out how to drive the tractor for the rst time, and with some mistakes and dedication I pushed my way through.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. Strong bones, strong teeth, strong smile. Not only does this campaign represent dairy foods and the benets the consumer receives, it also tells my story. These words are close and dear to my heart because when I was younger, I was in a serious farm accident which caused damage to my teeth. One day when I was sitting in my oral surgeon’s chair, he told me, “80 percent of my clients I put implants in need to have bone grafting done, and that percentage will be higher for you due to all the trauma.” I proved the surgeon wrong. I didn’t need any bone grafting done. In fact, he said he was surprised how strong my bones and teeth were after all my surgeries, and I can thank the dairy community for that because it was my family’s tradition to complement every meal with a refreshing glass of milk which caused me to have strong bones. People also know me for my bubbly personality and my infectious smile that I tend to show to many people during a day because I believe that one simple smile can brighten a day.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? Dairy farmers have an abundance of information available to them for management purposes; however, with the advancements in technology there will be even more data to help progress dairy farms. There will be new tests available that might help consultants make rations to prevent illness in cows. As I begin my career as a dairy consultant, I will work alongside dairy farmers to help them improve their herd through various tests and data analysis.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? I have watched Calissa’s passion for dairy grow ever since she was a little girl. Whether it be the cow, farmer, product or the consumer, they all need special attention. Calissa’s outgoing personality and ease to communicate with people will help her in areas needed to help others understand the importance of dairy.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? My dad has supported me in everything I have been a part of since I was a little girl. He continues to support me now even though I am in college. I come home and assist him with milking cows. He shares stories about the farm and about my sisters. I share stories about my college experiences. He encourages me to try new things and has inspired me to always try my best, even as a dairy princess.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. Dairy: It’s udderly delicious. When I hear the term dairy I think of farming, food and my college major. I am studying dairy production and dairy manufacturing. The term udderly refers to where the milk is coming from. Milk is produced by cows that farmers care for on a regular basis. I like to nish off with delicious, because when dairy is added to a recipe it makes food taste better.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? The dairy community will look different in my future. I have chosen to pursue a degree in dairy because I fell in love with cows and dairy foods at a young age. It would be cool to return to the family farm and add a manufacturing facility on-site, where I would assist in making bottled milk, cheese or ice cream. I would then welcome people to come in and tour the facilities, so they can see how my family raises our animals and how we make the food they may be purchasing in a grocery store.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Ashley would make a great Princess Kay, because she grew up on a dairy farm. She has helped us feed the calves, milk the cows, bed the heifers and take care of everything in between. We have seen her share her love for dairy with others and advocate in ways we never imagined. She has shared her dairy story at the county and state fair as well as in classrooms and other community events. She is committed to the dairy community. She has decided to study dairy production and dairy manufacturing at South Dakota State University.

She has worked at the dairy plant on campus where she has helped make cheese and ice cream. She would make a great Princess Kay, because she has a strong passion for dairy and wants to share it with everyone.

Whether she gets it or not, we will always be proud of her, and she will always be a princess in our eyes.

Melendy Miller, 20 Parents: Stacy and Julie Miller Plainview, Wabasha County Since being crowned dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy?

Every interaction I have with the people in my community is valuable. I learn what the consumers want to know about where their food comes from. Talking to people is the most effective way to build trust with our consumers and inspire condence in dairy foods. I get to proudly represent what my family does every day on the farm when I talk with someone about dairy.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? Farmers are good at what they do because they love what they do. We wake up every morning ready to work hard to provide for the people of our communities. Farmers are committed to the well being of their families and cows.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? My dad was the one who inspired my passion for dairy at a young age.

I would ride in the tractor with him and help him with the calves. He introduced me to our county dairy princesses when I was young and that lead me to the dairy princess program. It makes me happy knowing I am making him proud by representing the dairy community.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. Social media is great way to promote dairy in a positive light. I would love to start campaign #DeliciousDairy, and it would highlight all the amazing dishes and desserts that can be created with dairy.

I love to cook and try making new dishes. This would be a way to get people to try new dishes and nd creative ways to incorporate dairy into family dinners.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? The future of the dairy community looks bright. I have had the opportunity to meet dairy princesses and have gotten to know the other nalists well. We are the future of the dairy community and each of us brings something unique to the table. I hope to take over my family dairy farm, and the connections I have made with these young women who also have a passion for dairy will help me be the best advocate for our dairy community in the future.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Dairy and cows have been Melendy’s passion since she was old enough to feed a cow a handful of grass. All the cows love Melendy, and we actually call her the cow whisperer.

Dairy means as much to Melendy as it does to every dairy farmer. We got to watch Melendy grow and learn on the farm, and it has been incredible to watch her turn into the strong passionate woman she is today. Her passion and love for her cows will make her an excellent Princess Kay.

Julia Mullenbach, 18 Parents: Al and Lynette Mullenbach Rose Creek, Mower County Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy?

I was not raised on a dairy farm, so my experiences interacting with consumers while serving as a dairy princess have been different. I have enjoyed every opportunity that I have had to make personal connections with consumers of similar backgrounds, as being able to share my dairy story and insight into the dairy community has been rewarding.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? It is important for consumers to know the passion and love everyone involved within the dairy community has for what they do. Whether it be providing baby calves or milk cows with proper care or developing a new nutritious and wholesome dairy food, this love will never cease to go away. It is because of this undeniable love from the dairy community that all dairy foods consumers and dairy farm families encounter will be of the highest quality.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? I wasn’t necessarily exposed to the dairy community, but when I rst saw a picture of my mom serving as a Mower County Dairy Princess I was instantly hooked to dairy. With the help and guidance of both my mother and the Read family, my love and passion for dairy has only grown. I am so grateful for each opportunity I have been given, but most importantly the most recent experiences serving as a Mower County Dairy Princess and Princess Kay nalist.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. I would use one similar to that done by Lays potato chips. I would create polls on a dairy social media page where consumers could suggest avors for milk and ice cream. Not only would this allow consumers to share their viewpoints and suggestions, but it would also increase consumer demand and interest in healthy dairy foods.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? With the ever-increasing use of technology, I foresee the dairy community continuously working to become more sustainable to better help the environment. Although I am not sure what my future will hold after graduation, I am condent the dairy community will always be at the center of my career interests. I hope to nd a job working with a dairy checkoff organization where I will continue to share my dairy story and advocate for dairy.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Since rst becoming involved within the dairy community, Julia has developed an undeniable love for dairy cattle and dairy farmers that is always evident.

Her love for dairy combined with experience speaking in public would make her a great 65th Princess Kay of the Milky Way.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy?

I’ve visited with quite a few parents of young children this summer. The changes being made in grocery stores to common labels has opened a window for us as advocates. I’ve been able to share the simplicity and richness of milk with parents, answer their questions and leave with a new perspective. To say the least, this summer has been fullling.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? Farmers care. From each one of our animals to the land we plan to pass on, we care. From our communities to our families and yours too, we care. Every day we work to improve the comfort and health of cows, environmental practices we use, and safety and value of dairy foods we can condently enjoy.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess? My cousins Sarah and Emily have been monumental in establishing my royalty experience. As a little kid, I remember watching Emily as a nalist on TV. A few years later I made sure I was in the front row at Sarah’s coronation. From showmanship lessons with my rst show calf to talking cattle in church on Sundays, they have never ceased to share wisdom, support and love.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. I would use Pinterest to develop a “Dairy Good” campaign. Though the campaign would mainstream recipes, it would also include farm and food fact graphics.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? Dairy is progressive. As long as we are open to change and continue to stand by our values, I believe we will reach our common goals as a dairy community. Though I can’t predict the future, the idea of progression excites me. As an agricultural educator, I plan to promote the skill of sharing your story as an advocate. Not only will this be a pillar within my classroom, but within the community I teach in. Each of us has the choice to develop ideas about our food and health. I am excited to help students form these ideas as informed consumers from a young age.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Kind, caring, compassionate – words that describe Rebekka Paskewitz. When asked to give 100 percent, she gives 110 percent and with her passion for the dairy community it will be no different. She listens and follows through with her heart in all she pursues.

Since being crowned a dairy princess, what unique interaction have you had with consumers that has allowed you to proudly represent dairy? I have the opportunity to interact with consumers of both rural and urban communities. The Rochester area allows me to experience a wide range of diversity. My conversations with consumers can be anywhere from milk prices to milk alternatives. This also applies to elementary students. There is a distinct difference in questions asked by students and the content I present.

What message would you use to encourage people to put their trust in dairy farmers and the products they produce? The dedication farmers have for caring and working hard to produce the delicious dairy foods we enjoy. Dairy farming is a 365-day job. Farmers work as hard as they do because they truly value the wellbeing of their animals. On my family’s dairy, we work as a team to ensure all of our animals are cared for every day.

Who has been the most inuential person in you becoming a dairy princess?

I believe each and every past Princess Kay of the Milky Way have inuenced my desire to become a dairy princess. It is the job of Princess Kay to share her knowledge and experiences of the dairy community while spreading smiles. Her passion for dairy shines through as her face lights up when telling her dairy story.

Using any social media of your choice, develop a campaign to promote dairy or dairy products. During June Dairy Month, I would feature a cow from my family’s farm each week showcasing a different aspect of the cow’s life on each day of the week. Some topics are nutrition, milking and cow comfort. I would utilize Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to demonstrate the typical life of a dairy cow.

What does the future of the dairy industry look like to you and how do you see yourself tting into that future? The future of the dairy community will depend on our communication efforts with consumers. I see myself tting into this future with my college education in agricultural communications and marketing. I hope to remain involved in dairy by obtaining a career that will allow me to regularly interact with my community about all aspects of dairy. It would be a dream come true to have a job that includes the activities I do as a dairy princess.

Why would your daughter make a great Princess Kay? Our children have all grown up in the barn from the rst day each arrived home from the hospital. As a baby, Catherine would watch the cows instead of the mobile toys on her baby swing like most little ones would. She has always been keen on watching her cows and loving each and every one of them. We have watched her learn to haul loads of haylage, be Mom’s grain cart driver, carry and care for newborn calves, learn to modify rations on her own for the show cattle and wrangle 4-H steers in her younger days. We have seen Catherine interact with fairgoers, some of which she taught during a Meet the Farmer presentation. When doing so, we can see her true love of agriculture and the dairy industry shine through. Catherine is a natural born leader who has held many ofces and positions, gaining much respect from young to old. She enjoys speaking up and speaking out. We are truly proud to call her our princess and would love to see her likeness carved in butter on the opening day.

They can also make avor suggestions for next year while watching the 65th Princess Kay of the Milky Way and the 11 nalists have their likenesses carved in butter. Also not to be missed is the All-You-Can-Drink Milk Stand, owned by Minnesota’s dairy farm families. Celebrating its 64th year at the fair, visitors to the All-You-Can-Drink Milk Stand can purchase a bottomless cup of 2 percent white or low-fat chocolate milk for just $2. Guests can also join other dairy devotees for the 34th Annual Milk Run 5K early on the rst Sunday of the fair.

This spring, Midwest Dairy conducted its fourth annual online “Flavor of the Fair” public poll to select a new featured malt or sundae avor for this year’s fair. The winner is…That’s S’more Like It! That’s S’more Like It will only be available in the Dairy Building during this year’s fair. The avor is made with Min-

nesota dairy farmers’ secret, State Fair-recipe vanilla ice cream or malt, topped with graham cereal, teeny marshmallows and chocolate syrup. It will take you away to weekends at the cabin, where the days start with sunshine and end with s’mores by the campre.

Visitors to the Dairy Goodness Bar will be able to suggest potential avor combinations for the 2019 “Flavor of the Fair.”

As always, the Dairy Goodness Bar will serve up its variety of famous malts, sundaes and cones, as well as milk, yogurt, Greek yogurt, cheese sticks and fresh cheese curds.

All-You-Can-Drink Milk. The Best Value at the Fair – Fairgoers seeking their

ll of fresh, cold, 2 percent white or lowfat chocolate milk can do so for just $2 per cup at the All-You-Can-Drink Milk Stand, which will celebrate its 64th year in 2018. The all-you-can drink tradition began in 1955 when the stand was a tent on Machinery Hill, charging a dime for a bottomless cup of white milk. It later moved to its current location on the corner of Judson and Clough (kitty-corner from the Coliseum), and following a rebuild of the stand in 2004, chocolate milk was added to the menu. It is the only food or drink item offered at the fair as an unlimited item.

34th Annual Milk Run. Members of Team Dairy – a running group for dairy enthusiasts – will be behind the starting line when the 34th annual State Fair Milk Run 5K kicks off this year. The team will participate in the annual race on Sunday morning, Aug. 26, (7:45 a.m.; on West Dan Patch south of the West End Market).

Midwest Dairy is sponsoring the event again this year, with Kemps providing the free chocolate milk to runners as they cross the nish line. All runners will also receive a coupon for a complimentary treat from the Dairy Goodness Bar, courtesy of Minnesota’s dairy farmers. Stanek looks back on her reign as 44th Princess Kay

Once representing Minnesota as the 44th Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Kari (Skiba) Stanek continues to represent dairy today.

“I was blessed to be able to serve the dairy farmers of Minnesota throughout my y e a r s as dairy princess and Princess Kay. I gained Kari (Skiba) Stanek so much 44th Princess Kay f r o m growing up on a dairy farm and it was a pleasure to give back to the dairy community by sharing my dairy story,” Stanek said. “It’s a story that continues today in conversations, both online and in person.”

Stanek is also still rooted in her dairy farming background. She and her husband own 80 head of Jersey and Holstein cattle in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.

“I love the cows and the people. I could talk about and work with cows all day long, but the people behind these beautiful creatures are also just as amazing,” Stanek said. “Dairy farmers have a great passion and dedication for caring for their cows and they are the best to be around.”

“The life of a dairy princess, today, is really about making use of the communication tools available as they share each dairy story.”

“I was shocked, excited, honored and humbled to be chosen to represent Minnesota’s dairy industry,” Stanek said.

Throughout her reign as Princess Kay, Stanek traveled across the state attending a variety of functions and activities.

“I especially enjoyed going into classrooms and sharing stories and information about my family's farm and how we feed and care for our animals,” Stanek said. “Although it’s hard to bring the farm to school, my dad built an amazing tool for me to share our story, a calf cart. It allowed us to bring a Jersey calf into the classroom where the students could pet it.”

Using her communication skills gained as a dairy princess, Stanek continues to attend the school working as a communications and media specialist for the school district of Reedsburg, Wis., where she lives with her husband, Joe, and three daughters, Sykora, 13, Cyana, 8, and Zynita, 5.

that sped by fast. I remember the joyful feelings I had when I brought the 'ah ha moments' to the children I shared my dairy story with,” Stanek said.

Although it has been over 20 years since serving as Princess Kay, Stanek feels the program has not changed as much as she thought it might, with the except of how dairy messages are shared.

“What has changed is the communication tools available today, such as cell

phones and social media,” Stanek said. “These tools allow our dairy princesses and the dairy community a faster and improved way to share the stories of what is happening on the farm.”

Stanek feels this use of communication is a huge advancement, allowing the dairy community to share their dairy story more efciently.

or make a dairy recipe,” Stanek said. “The life of a dairy princess, today, is really about making use of the communication tools available as they share each dairy story.”

As Stanek stays active in the dairy community, she continues to give advice to those who wish to do the same and serve as a dairy princess.

Stanek encourages young women to use social media and also personal conversations to interact with consumers, work with local princess coordinators to plan an effective and interactive event in the community, and also dress appropriately for the event.

“To future dairy princesses, each dairy story is unique. Find the best way to share yours,” Stanek said. “And after your reign, keep sharing your great dairy story.”

Serving as Princess Kay of the Milky Way was a stepping stone for Stanek’s journey and she is grateful she had the opportunity.

“Throughout my year [as Princess Kay], I was able to practice the art of understanding the audience I was speaking to and tweak my message and story I would share. I also grew my network of friends within the dairy community that continue today,” Stanek said. “Serving as Minnesota's goodwill ambassador for dairy was a phenomenal experience I will never forget.”
