Ebersviller survives 23-foot drop, reminds farmers to be vigilant By Andrea Borgerding andrea.b@dairystar.com

VERGAS, Minn. – David Ebersviller’s life has been riddled with neardeath experiences and close calls. As a 66-year-old dairy producer who has farmed his entire life, run-ins with cows and equipment is a daily risk. But looking back on the events of May 19, Ebersviller knows he could have done more to prevent what happened to him. Ebersviller continues to recover from injuries he suffered ve months ago when he fell 23 feet from the roof of a freestall barn and landed on a 3-inch pipe in the barn’s feed lane railing. Landing on the pipe tore open the right side of his torso, damaging internal organs and causing signicant blood loss. “I bear a fair amount on the responsibility as I should have checked the rafters better before I started,” Ebersviller said. “One of those things that you forget about as you are working.” Ebersviller milks 120 cows with wife, Darla, on their farm near Vergas. Ebersviller’s brother, Duane, and a brother-in-law, Duane, work for the dairy doing feeding and eldwork. The farm runs about 800 acres of cropland raising alfalfa, corn and oats. On the day of the accident, Ebersviller was on the barn roof with his brother and a crew of three people. The crew was removing damaged tin from a storm the farm was hit with one year prior. The tin was intact, but the rafters were compromised. “Dealing with insurance pushed off repairs longer than I wanted,” Ebersviller said. “By the time spring came around, we couldn’t get a demolition crew scheduled.” Ebersviller decided to complete demo work in-house by stripping all the tin off the roof rst. The crew had a half hour left when Ebersviller gures he stepped over a rafter that must have been cracked. The tin buckled underneath him. “I didn’t fall right away,” Ebersviller said. “My brother scooted over to grab me. I went down before he got over to me.”

Ebersviller fell, hit the feed lane pipe railing, slid down the right side and landed in the feed in the manger. Direct impact was on Ebersviller’s abdomen just below his sternum down to just above his belly button. Sliding off the pipe tore a large opening in his abdomen. “When I hit the ground I looked up, and I saw my brother come down,” Ebersviller said. His brother also fell from the roof and landed on his tailbone on a pipe. Fortunately, it was directly on the tailbone and did not damage any vertebrae. Ebersviller yelled at his brother to see if he was OK but by that point, Ebersviller knew he was in trouble himself. “I couldn’t move,” Ebersviller said. “The rst thing that went through my mind was that this is not going to be good.”

The rest of the crew on the roof went to the aid of Ebersviller and his brother and called 911 immediately. Emergency personnel from Vergas were on scene within minutes with two Life Link helicopters en route from Fargo, North Dakota. Ambulances transported the two injured brothers to an open eld where the helicopters could land to take them to Sanford Health in Fargo. “They brought two units of blood for me which was used up in the rst 10 minutes,” Ebersviller said. “I was bleeding internally pretty fast.” Once he arrived at the hospital, Ebersviller went into surgery to repair the damaged organs. “The surgeon wasn’t too sure he would be operating on me after I had lost so much blood,” Ebersviller said. “They thought I would be dead before I got to the hospital.” In a coma and on a ventilator, Ebersviller does not recall the rst week he was in the hospital. “My wife and a nurse were both with me when I woke up a week later,” Ebersviller said. “I was pretty confused.” In the coming weeks, Ebersviller would endure 14 surgeries to repair organs. In addition, Ebersviller had a high risk of infection from his injuries. He spent 63 days in the hospital. “I did have a lot of infection,” Ebersviller said. “Until you get that all under control, you are pretty vulnerable.” Back at the farm, Ebersvillers’ sons, Dustin and Derek, were key in completing daily milkings, feeding chores and eldwork while both their father and uncle recovered from their injuries. Ebersviller recalls his recovery in the hospital as a long and miserable stay. “I feel sorry for people who have to spend an extensive amount of time in the hospital,” Ebersviller said. “Especially after you start feeling better.” At the end of August, Ebersviller was released from the hospital and continues recovery at home. He is very weak and needs to have the wound dressing changed twice a day. Ebersviller was able to chop corn this fall and operate the haybine to do fourth cutting hay and third cutting clover. “The hardest part was getting up in the chopper or haybine, but once you’re in, it’s mostly hand controls,” Ebersviller said. Ebersviller is looking to gain back the 50 pounds he lost after his accident meanwhile staying active as part of his rehabilitation. Duane spent 10 days in the hospital, wore a back brace for several months and continues his recovery at home. This accident came just over four years after Ebersviller was attacked by a fresh cow while checking on cows in a close-up pen. He sustained three broken ribs, a punctured lung, a fractured skull, a broken nose and a shattered right cheekbone. “It’s kind of the luck of the draw,” Ebersviller said of enduring two farm accidents. “Some situations, especially with a cow, is unavoidable when you consider how often a farmer checks on a cow to see if she needs help with calving.” Knowing some accidents are unavoidable, Ebersviller urges farmers to be careful, especially with children on the farm. “Some farmers have their kids check the cows,” Ebersviller said. “A smaller person could be snapped in half pretty easily by a cow.” Ebersviller also encourages vigilance when completing tasks on the farm. “If it takes an extra day to get the project done, so be it,” Ebersviller said. “Obviously it ended up taking me a lot longer because I wasn’t as vigilant as I should’ve been.”

After a decade’s worth of data compilation, researchers have determined the benets of using a threebreed rotation in commercial dairy herds. In a virtual press conference hosted by ProCROSS Sept. 29, Dr. Les Hansen highlighted the 305-day producDr. Les Hansen tion and fertility results of Montbéliarde-sired, Viking Red-sired and Holstein-sired crossbred cows compared to their purebred Holstein herdmates from a 10-year study of seven Minnesota dairy farms. “The key things we wanted to focus on were production and fertility because they are major concerns for dairy producers around the world, phenotypically and genetically,” Hansen said. Hansen, a professor at the University of Minnesota, conducted the study alongside graduate students Amy Hazel-Loetschke and Brad Heins. The study reviewed the crossbred data compared to purebred Holsteins based on one of three lactations and included a sample size of more than 9,000 dairy cattle. While each data summary provided differences amongst the crossbreds and lactations, certain data points were statistically signicant for research, meaning there was at least 1% difference from the purebred Holstein herdmates. When reviewing age at calving, purebred Holsteins, Viking Redsired and Montbéliarde-sired animals were calving at an average of 23.8 months. That value decreased in three-breed rotations of the same sires and increased in second and

third lactations. The greatest difference was noted in the Montbéliarde-sired animals of the third lactation in a two-breed cross. Purebred Holsteins recorded a calving age of 48.9 months where as those crosses were at 48.4 months. “Dairy producers are getting these animals into the herd at a young age,” Hansen said. “If they’re getting pregnant quicker, that contributes to a younger age at subsequent calvings.” The results of rst service conception rate showcased dramatic improvement within the two-breed crossbreds – purebred Holsteins at 37% compared to 45% for Viking Red-sired and 43% for Montbéliarde-sired animals. The three-breed crosses were more pronounced at 43%, 52% and 51%, respectively. Overall conception rate was also observed and capped at ve services. “There were big differences when we compared the crossbreds to purebred Holstein herdmates,” Hansen said. “And the differences were in the right direction.” Notable values included the Montbéliarde-sired animals in twoand three-breed rotations across rst, second and third lactations. Times bred – up to ve services – as well as days open were also examined. The study found both data points were improved in the crossbred animals compared to their purebred Holstein herdmates. The study also looked at pregnancy rate. “Pregnancy rate is heavily used to gauge fertility and is a reection of days open,” Hansen said. “When we look at two-breed crosses, they surpass 30%, and in some cases that was statistically signicant. In threebreed crosses, there was a big advantage. Fertility is clearly superior in crossbreds.” When the researchers observed production records on the purebred Holsteins and their crossbred counterparts, the rst-lactation two-breed crossbreds had greater 305-day actual fat production. animals in a two-breed cross had 13 pounds more fat and MontbĂŠliarde-sired animals had 22 pounds more fat than the Holsteins at 927 pounds. However, in subsequent lactations and crosses, that value decreased. â€œThere was tremendous production in these herds. The Holstein herdmates of two-breed and three-breed crosses increased with lactations,â€? Hansen said. â€œThat shows a positive genetic trend and the herdsâ€™ improving management.â€? On a percentage base, there were slight increases of fat in the crossbreds compared to purebred Holsteins throughout all lactations. Yet, none of the values were statistically signiďƒžcant. When reviewing 305-day actual protein production, the MontbĂŠliarde-sired two-breed crosses demonstrated an increase in protein that was statistically signiďƒžcant. â€œProtein production in these herds is considered very high for Holsteins in the United States,â€? Hansen said. The most notable difference was in the threebreed crosses of Viking Red-sired animals at more than 30 pounds of protein less than the contemporary Holsteins. â€œBut, those cows were getting pregnant quicker and it wasnâ€™t adjusted to consider their return to production quicker,â€? Hansen said. On a percentage base, the crossbreds had about a 0.15% higher protein, but it was not statistically signiďƒžcant. The ďƒžnal data set reviewed the crossbreds 305-day actual milk in 1,000 pounds compared to purebred Holstein herdmates. â€œGoing across the rotations and lactations, these were extremely high production herds with

third lactation herdmates average 30,000 pounds of milk,â€? Hansen said. â€œWe were not surprised the crosses were not as good, generally speaking.â€? Across the data set, the crossbreds were consistently lower in production than the Holsteins. â€œRemember, we get paid for solids in milk,â€? Hansen said. â€œYes, thereâ€™s less volume but thatâ€™s not what weâ€™re paid for.â€? To put the results into context, Hansen and his colleagues converted the data to lifetime values rather than 305-day for daily fat and protein. The purebred Holsteins, across lifetimes on a daily basis, averaged 5.53 pounds of fat and protein production when comparing two-breed crosses. MontbĂŠliarde-sired crossbreds were 2% greater, but Viking Red-sired crossbreds were 1% less on a daily basis across the lifetime. The opposite was true for the three-breed groups. Holsteins recorded 5.63 pounds of daily fat and protein production, whereas Viking Redsired crossbreds were 2% less and MontbĂŠliardesired crossbreds were 1% greater. â€œThere is only so much space and capacity for cows on the farm,â€? Hansen said. â€œYou want as much daily performance as possible for production for cows.â€?

Holstein Association launches virtual interview contest for youth Holstein Association USA is excited to announce a new Virtual Interview Contest. This program is designed to prepare youth for real world opportunities, giving them the chance to sharpen their resume writing and interview skills. The top three winners in each age division will be awarded cash prizes. “Recognizing that youth today need to master the craft of making a good impression virtually to garner accolades, scholarships, jobs and more, we are excited to offer a new contest that helps youth hone their resume and interview skills in our virtual world today,” says Kelli Dunklee, Holstein Association USA Youth Specialist. The Virtual Interview Contest is open to youth ages 12 to 21 as of Jan. 1, 2020. Individuals must be a Junior member of Holstein Association USA to be eligible. Youth will be split into three categories based on age. Individuals in the junior division (ages 12 to 14 as of Jan. 1) will apply for a mock scenario award trip to World Dairy Expo. In the intermediate division (ages 15 to 17) youth will be applying for a mock educational scholarship. Finally, youth in the senior division (ages 18 to 21) will be applying for a dream career of their choosing. Applicants will be judged on their combined cover letter and resume score. Up to 15 applicants from each age division will be selected for a virtual interview with a panel of three judges. Every individual who participates will be given written feedback on their cover letter and resume. Cash prizes of $250 for rst place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place will be awarded in the junior and intermediate divisions. In the senior division, youth will be given cash prizes of $500 for rst place, $250 for second place, and $100 for third place. Entries are currently being accepted and interested youth should send a cover letter and resume corresponding to their appropriate age division to kdunklee@holstein.com by Nov. 1, 2020. NMC updates Post-milking Teat Disinfection Fact Sheet Teat disinfection plays a key role in the National Mastitis Council (NMC) mastitis control plan. To help dairy producers and their advisers implement the most sciencebased teat disinfection protocols, NMC Teat Health Committee members updated the organization’s Post-milking Teat Disinfection Fact Sheet. This free resource is available at: http://bit.ly/TeatDisinfectionNMC. The Post-milking Teat Disinfection Fact Sheet addresses various types of postmilking teat disinfectants, including those used for different seasons. Always thoroughly review manufacturer label claims and directions for mixing, use and storage prior to deciding if a product is right for a dairy farm. The Fact Sheet guides users with teat dip application, handling, storage, use and methods for protecting efcacy. This NMC resource also discusses teat dip cups, sprays and automated milking systems. Why is post teat disinfection so important? The rate of new intramammary infections can be reduced 70 percent or more by disinfecting all teats of all cows with an effective product immediately after every milking, compared with no disinfection. Teat disinfection does not affect existing mammary gland infections, but it may reduce colonization of the teat end by mastitis pathogens and thus reduce the chance of new intramammary infections. NMC leaders remind dairy producers that good teat disinfectants have efcacy against the major mastitis pathogens, are economical, easy to apply and help maintain or promote good skin condition. Only use products that are registered or licensed with the appropriate regulatory authority in your jurisdiction. For example, regulatory authorities include the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Veterinary Drugs Directorate of Health Canada, and European Medicines Evaluation Agency. In the United States, FDA regulates teat disinfectants as over-the-counter drugs and does not require proof of effectiveness. In Canada, however, teat disinfection products must complete a full submission and approval process for veterinary drugs. Dairy producers should request information from the manufacturer or supplier on the registration or licensing and results of controlled research studies showing efcacy. New president, directors elected to National Dairy Shrine During the 71st annual meeting of the National Dairy Shrine, Dr. Dennis Funk, Sun Prairie, Wis. was elected president of the board of directors. In addition, Matt Iager, DVM, Boonsboro, Md., was elected president-elect. During the meeting, which was held virtually due to the cancellation of World Dairy Expo, a new slate of board members was also named. This includes: Kate Geppert, Kingdom City, Mo., Jodi Hoynoski, Brattleboro, Vt., Dr. Vikram Mistry, Brookings, S.D., Dr. Sheila McGuirk, Dodgeville, Wis., Carol Regusci, Modesto, Calif., and Brittany Heizer, Snow Camp, N.C. Returning board members include: Bonnie Bargstedt, Valatie, N.Y., Randy Gross Sr., Elkton, S.D., Linda Hanson, Goodridge, Minn., Joel Hastings, Madera, Calif., Stan Henderson, Paso Robles, Calif., James Huffard, Crockett, Va., Rita Kennedy, Valencia, Pa., Dan Schimek, Eagle Lake, Minn, Royce Thornton, Wooster, Ohio, and Karen Wheatley, Crumpton, Md. Six board members retired from the board at the annual meeting. A new approach to membership outreach and corporate sponsorships was also discussed during the meeting. A new monthly enewsletter for members will begin in October to further the organization’s mission and increase regular contact with members. In addition, a new corporate sponsorship program will be put in place to encourage greater support of the organization.
