WELCH, Minn. – By building off of feedback and comments from attendees of the 2017 Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo, the organization’s leadership is excited to be back on the banks of the Mississippi River at Treasure Island Resort and Casino for the 2018 event.

The conference, held Nov. 27-29, will feature a new set of presenters and entertainment while maintaining the relaxed atmosphere and opportunities for connecting with other dairy farmers and industry professionals that has become its trademark.

“We’re excited to be back at Treasure Island for our second year,” said Jenna Davis, education director for Minnesota Milk. “We’ve incorporated feedback from last year’s attendees and vendors as we strive to make our event valuable and relevant. This year, we deliberately scheduled more time for networking and have built in longer breaks to encourage this.

Among the presenters are former United States Secretary of Agriculture and current CEO and president of the United States Dairy Export Council, Tom Vilsack, who will be speaking about American relations with dairy trade partners the world over as well as insights on American dairy exports.

Other presentations include seminars detailing farm succession planning and antibiotic usage with world class speakers.

“Randall Singer’s, professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota, [presentation] on antibiotics is heard all over the country, and John Baker from the Iowa State University Beginning Farmer Center will help people transition their farms,” Davis said.

New to the conference this year is entertainment brought by The Johnny Holm Band.

“The Johnny Holm Band should put a new spin on our live entertainment,” Davis said.

While many things about this year’s conference are new, a few things remain the same, especially connecting with old friends and making new friends in a year as turbulent as 2018 has been for dairy farmers.

“Camaraderie with fellow dairy farmers and a relaxed atmosphere,” Davis said of what Minnesota Milk hopes to provide attendees. “Our goal for the entire event is to provide an opportunity for dairy farmers and allied businesses to rally around an industry we all love. We want to ensure this is a valuable experience for all. We’re committed to trying new things.”

Davis said attending the conference is crucial for dairy farmers who want to spend a couple of days away from the cows to learn, laugh, rest and recharge.

“2018 has been a heck of a year,” Davis said. “From low prices to trade disruptions, weather challenges and more, I think we are all ready to close the book on this year. It’s so vital to come to this conference to network with others. It’s important to take care of yourself. Take a mental health day or two away from the farm to ll up your cup. Visit with other dairy farmers and businesses who are facing the same challenges as you. There’s a lot of power in knowing and feeling the safety net of community.”

The questions everyone should be asking

Baker provides succession planning workshop Nov. 28

Succession planning is a common part of proper business management, but for the tens of thousands of farmers who have effectively transferred ownership, just as many have struggled.

In John Baker’s workshop, “Making a success of farm succession planning”, he hopes to address topics farm owners need to be asking when considering the future of their agriculture enterprise. Baker will present Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo in Welch, Minn.

“People put off succession planning because of daunting terms like estates, trusts, lions and tigers and bears, oh my,” Baker said. “But farmers are great planners, naturally, and this is not an insurmountable thing.”

Baker is an attorney with Iowa State Extension, specializing in farm transfers.

During Baker’s scheduled 4.5-hour workshop, he hopes attendees can address three prompts as they relate to their farm business and personal aspirations.

“There’s a pattern we’ll be following,” Baker said. “Where do things stand now? Where do you want to be? How do you get there?”

In the rst question, Baker will urge conference attendees to evaluate their dairy farm analytically. At this time, they may decide what wealth looks like, how labor is distributed, and the layout of the farm; was there a recent expansion?

By identifying components that make up the farm business, dairy farmers can make appropriate decisions as it relates to the farm’s future.

“In the 1840s, Iowans searched out land out west because no trees were growing on their land, so they assumed it was marginal,” Baker said. “They walked across some of the most fertile soils because no one stopped to look. It’s really important to use an accu-

rate depiction of the farm to come up with a realistic analysis.”

Not only should dairy farmers be evaluating their business, but also their family structure to decide what is the best path forward.

“Often, it’s the non-economic items that drive economic analysis,” Baker said.

Next, attendees will question where they want the farm business to be. This may encompass retirement or partnerships, and should also include personal aspirations for the farmer as well as John Baker Iowa State Extension family members.

If a farm transition is in the future, current business owners need to know who will be the successor and if that individual, or individuals, are prepared to successfully oversee the farm operation.

“How can a successor manage the farm if important information on farm management has not been shared with them?” Baker said. “The chance of them being able to keep the business running becomes slim.

The land may continue to be used, but the business slumps.”

Farmers and successors should also discuss where they want to be in their personal life. This may include physical location in relation to the farm site, family priorities like children’s sporting events or the desire to take a vacation.

“What is the lifestyle you want to create?” Baker said. “These are fringe benets to consider.”

Once the farm’s current standing is evaluated and there is a direction in which both the business and those involved in the business want to move, farm owners need to nd a way to achieve these goals.

“From today, how are you going to get there?”

Baker said.

This question is often answered with input from the people who make up the operation. Those involved decide what they value most and develop a mission statement of sorts to guide the farm’s progress.

“If you have a mission statement for the farm based on what’s important to you, then you can set goals, and establish strategies and tactics to meet those goals,” Baker said.

In Baker’s 30 years of experience, he has come to realize this process of developing a succession plan is an international problem with farmers across industries and countries working through similar challenges.

During the late 1990s, Baker was a part of international research regarding farm transfer in countries like the United States, Japan, Poland, Ireland, England, Australia and Canada, among others.

“If you took away legal, cultural and social differences, removing all labels, you’d be hard pressed to nd differences between countries,” Baker said.

“Farmers are some of the smartest and hardest working people I work with, but are ignorant when it comes to developing a succession plan. … That’s an education problem.”

Baker now focuses on establishing relationships with the families he works with as a farm succession coordinator, not a lawyer reviewing the legal documents of the transfer.

“My work is professionally and personally satisfying,” Baker said. “One son told me there are going to be generations on his farm that have never heard my name before, but because of what we worked through, there will be a farm for them.”

The intent of Baker’s work, which will be highlighted during the workshop, is to help families answer those three questions and move forward with a farm succession in a way that is benecial for all parties involved, as well as the business.

“I want everyone to be able to sit down with their intentions and talk about where they want to be,” Baker said. “If you can’t do that, then you’re not going to have a career in the farm business. Worse, you won’t all be eating Thanksgiving dinner, which is as bad of an outcome as not farming.”

In using real-life examples as well as lighthearted conversation Baker hopes conference attendees will leave his session with an understanding of the path to take when planning for succession.

A surplus of milk in the U.S. dairy industry has burdened the market for the better part of three years.

Economist Phil Plourd will be addressing questions about the saturated dairy market in his presentation, “Dairy market situation and outlook”, Nov. 28 at the Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minn.

Plourd is the president of Blimling and Associates, Inc., Madison, Wis. and president of the services division of Dairy.com. He has been involved in dairy market analysis, research, forecasting and risk management activities for more than 20 years.

Plourd hopes to inspire thought and present reality during his seminar. He will also talk about how American dairy farmers are poised and equipped to feed a growing Phil Plourd global population.

Plourd said he hopes those in attendance walk away Blimling & Associates thinking about the trends in the dairy market, what the outlook is for 2019 and how to plan accordingly.

Market literacy will be the focus of his presentation.

“I want to address marketing, production and budgeting and how they all can affect one another,” Plourd said. “I’m hoping to widen the lens of what we see is likely to happen with the markets in 2019.”

Plourd hopes to stir thoughts regarding market outlook in another direction.

“What I think is more entertaining for listeners and provokes thought beyond my presentation is the ever-changing consumer trends,” Plourd said. “And what that says about the dairy market and its potential.”

An example of this is alternative milks in the market and evolving consumer tastes.

“The notion that things are changeable and volatile is threatening,” Plourd said. “Shining a light on consumer trends is something that is not normally discussed, but it’s a big part of dairy’s economics, and we should take that into consideration.”

Plourd is aware of the market climate and is excited to be starting the tough conversation.

“For better or for worse, we present reality,” he said of economists. “Who knows what the market is going to be like in 30 days?”

Plourd said he hopes the markets improve, but knows that may not happen.

He hopes to help dairy farmers analyze their management decisions to make the best decisions for them to be protable.

“I think budgeting and expectations planning are what I hope to get across,” Plourd said. “I want to give dairy farmers the tools to help them make better decisions in the next six to 12 months.”

Overall, Plourd hopes to address current and future challenges of which he said there are many.

“I want to talk about the mega trends and how they are still in favor of increased dairy consumption over time,” Plourd said. “Sure, there are short-term issues and it’s not going to be sunshine and roses every day. Nothing is guaranteed, but American dairy producers are better equipped now more than ever to feed a growing, hungry world.”

Resiliency in the face of change Hoiberg to speak Nov. 28

Dennis Hoiberg, a compelling speaker from Australia, will share a message of resilience with dairy producers and industry professionals alike at the Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo in Welch, Minn.

Hoiberg will present, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Building resilience in the face of change,â&#x20AC;? at 8 a.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 28 in the Island Event Center at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino.

Hoiberg founded Lessons Learnt Consulting, of Melbourne, Au., in 2007. The company focuses on aiding in the personal and professional development of individuals and organizations in the face of change. Hoiberg has worked with the grains and dairy industry in Australia as well as agribusinesses and banking companies that serve communities throughout Australia, South Africa, Asia and New Zealand.

Hoiberg said.

Hoiberg will share his HOPE model with the audience: healthy habits, optimistic thinking, planning and enacting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Australia, people have so much pressure in their daily life â&#x20AC;Ś,â&#x20AC;? Hoiberg said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My top tip is you have to get over yourselves. We all struggle sometimes in our life. Many of us, especially men, will tend to struggle internally and will try to sort stuff out ourselves. The real trick in well-being is being able to get over yourself and reaching out to those in the world who can help you.â&#x20AC;?

Historically, dairy producers and industry professionals alike have measured a dairy farm’s success by the volume of milk produced.

Trent Olson will explain why taking a next-level approach to measuring a dairy farm’s protability can leverage a farm for future success during a Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo seminar, “Production is vanity, prot is sanity, and ROI is necessity”, at 3:30 p.m., Nov. 28 in the Island Event Center at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minn.

Olson is the North America genetic services trainer with ABS Global Inc., in DeForest, Wis. He was raised on a dairy farm in southeast Minnesota, and in his role focuses on economic analysis projects, genetic education and training capabilities. He also teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course Trent Olson and coaches the UW-Madison dairy judging team.

ABS Global Inc. Olson’s topic will revolve around the aspects of any given dairy farm: the production level, prot and return on investment.

“So often in business, and particularly in agriculture, we have a pretty straight forward yardstick on how we measure success,” Olson said. “Often it is about the output side of the equation. We don’t always step back and think about our business differently, and question if it is protable output.”

Olson said it is important for a producer to take a step back and review their operation. Instead of focusing on maximizing yield, a producer must ask oneself if this is an efcient use of capital.

In other industries, such as the nancial sector, grain farming and the meat industry, Olson said businesses zero in on what is a protable return and how to maximize efcient production given a set of inputs.

“Even though the dairy industry has a multi-dimensional aspect of managing a herd of cows and then a feed yard or a poultry barn, the concepts still apply in a lot of regards,” Olson said. “Sourcing feed is the most relevant and largest cost center for a dairy. How do we make the most of that pile of feed, and are we truly amplifying and maximizing production, and ultimately yield, based on that largest input?”

Producers should think of their return on investment instead of solely focusing on the overall pounds of milk they are producing.

“Pure production is vanity,” Olson said. “While it looks great, it doesn’t dictate the overall health and protability of the business.”

The second largest expense of most dairy farms lies in the heifer raising sector or procuring heifer replacements. Olson said a producer must consider if they are raising the right number of replacements versus raising excess.

“Many farms I work with, the overall cull rate of the dairy herd is dictated by the size of the heifer crop, and ultimately we cull to make room for heifers calving in,” he said. “There is opportunity to rethink that concept. Why do you aƩend the event? The networking to me is always important. I always learn something from my fellow dairy farmers. Our support network, the dairy vendors and industry people are there to hear out our needs, show the latest equipment and chat in a relaxed format. The speakers are usually great, giving us the newest informa�on. But the most important part to me is that it is the annual mee�ng for Minnesota Milk. This is the chance for members to share their opinions on public policy and elect leaders to the board that represent us in conversa�ons with government and academia throughout the year.

What has been one tool or concept you learned about at a Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo and were able to implement on your farm?

I don’t know that I can answer this ques�on, as I have learned about tools and concepts over the speak. Having Vilsack is a really big deal and is years at this conference that I can’t pick one out. one good reason to nd a way to a�end.

What is one thing you are looking forward to at the conference this year? I enjoy the networking the most. This is the one dairy event in Minnesota where our industry comes together and a lot of incredible dairy people are in one spot.

Tell us about your farm. My wife Jody and I took over the farm from my parents nearly 40 years ago and raised ve sons and one daughter here.

We have a parlor and freestall barn, plus two compost barns for pre- and post-fresh cows. We also have an incredible team of employees. We are proud of our conserva�on efforts and strive to make a posi�ve impact on the community.

Focus on lameness

University of Minnesota welcomes producers for open discussion

Producers willing to share their challenges with dairy cattle lameness in their herds will have an opportunity to help shape research.

Erin Wynands will host a focus group discussion about dairy cattle lameness Nov. 28 from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference and Expo in Wolf/ Eagle rooms at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch, Minn.

Wynands is a graduate student in the University of Minnesota Department of Veterinary Erin Wynands Population MediU of M Grad Student cine with an interest in dairy cattle welfare and projects relating to dairy cattle lameness. She is working with Dr. Gerard Cramer, department of veterinary population medicine associate professor, on her research.

The project, “Characterizing the attitudes and perceptions of dairy producers, veterinarians, and hoof trimmers towards the prevention and treatment of lameness in dairy cows”, encompasses a series of focus groups with

each stakeholder group.

“We are trying to understand lameness issues through the eyes of our participants and understand the barriers they might be facing to improve lameness,” Wynands said. “We are also interested in the dairy producer’s role, the veterinarian’s role and the hoof trimmer’s role in lameness prevention and treatment. We’re interested in the relationship between those different groups in how they are working together.”

The purpose of the focus groups is to glean information and understanding of lameness and each stakeholder’s roles to be able to provide a University of Minnesota Extension program to address lameness issues and barriers, and to be a catalyst for stakeholder groups to work together.

This is the rst producer focus group of the year, and Wynands said she hopes to have eight to 10 producers in attendance. Four focus groups for each group of stakeholders will be conducted.

“I am looking forward to talking to the producers and nding out where lameness ranks among the issues on their farms and hearing about their experiences with lameness management,” Wynands said.

During the 1.5-hour discussion, producers will be led through a series of questions about lameness management.

To begin, Wynands will pose questions relating to the perceptions of the importance and prevalence of lameness in the dairy industry, such as, how big of a challenge do you think lameness is and how would you rank lameness

“We like it if people tell stories about their personal experiences,” Wynands said. “That is what we are looking for.”

Wynands will also question about roles of producers and other stakeholders: How do you see your role in contributing to lameness management, and do you think anyone else has important roles to play?

“Hopefully people are happy to dis-

cuss and expand on it as they see t,” Wynands said. “People are willing to share and nd the topic important to the industry.”

Minnesota Milk awards $12,000 in post-secondary scholarships

The Minnesota Milk Producers Association is announcing the 2018 recipients of its annual scholarship awards. Twelve outstanding individuals from four schools are this year’s awardees.

The recipients will be recognized at this year’s Minnesota Milk Dairy Conference & Expo on November 27-29. The convention will be held at Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Welch Minn.

The 2018 scholarship recipients are: – Leif Annexstad, of St. Peter, attending University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, studying Animal Science, son of Rolf and Jean Annexstad.

– Matthais Annexstad, of St. Peter, attending University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, studying Animal Science, son of Rolf and Jean Annexstad.

Five Minnesota students receive National Dairy Board Scholarship The national dairy checkoff has awarded 13 academic scholarships to college students enrolled in programs that emphasize dairy and who have shown potential to become future dairy leaders.

Five of the winners come from farms located in Minnesota.

The ve $2,500 scholarship winners with Minnesota ties are: – Morgan Krause of Buffalo, Minn. Attending University of Minnesota, majoring in Agricultural Communications and Marketing; – Haely Leiding of Fountain, Minn. Attending University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, majoring in Agricultural Education; – Kayla Leiding of Fountain, Minn. Attending University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, majoring in Agricultural Communications and Marketing; – Rebekka Paskewitz of Browerville, Minn.

Attending South Dakota State University, majoring in Agricultural Education and minoring in Animal Science and Social Media/Public Relations.

Eligible majors include journalism, communications/public relations, marketing, business, economics, nutrition, food science or agriculture education.
