BROWERVILLE, Minn. – The past year has own by for Rebekka Paskewitz, 65th Princess Kay of the Milky Way. One year ago at this time, she was a recently crowned Todd County Dairy Princess, preparing for the May Leadership and Promotion Event and the culmination of her freshman year of college. “Wow. Life is completey different now,” Paskewitz said. “I have 11 girls who have become some of my closest friends in dairy, and am serving our dairy farmers in the opportunity of a lifetime.” Unlike most Princess Kays, Paskewitz did not grow up on a dairy farm. “Dairy wasn’t outside my front door growing up, but I was grateful to have it right down the road at my uncle’s farm,” she said. “For
years, I fed calves on the farm, learning to manage both nutritional and health needs. To this day, calves hold a special place in my heart as the future milk producers on the farm.” Through her farm experience, Paskewitz was inspired to study agricultural education at South Dakota State University. After college she hopes to pursue a career in education and advocacy, either as a high school teacher or in a farm setting. “My dream is to work with consumers of all ages, connecting them to agriculture through hands-on experiences,” Pasketiwz said. In her role as Princess Kay, Paskewitz has also watched children unfold truths about common misconceptions in dairy and provided parents of young

children with emotion-driven stories about the constant care animals are given. “These connections are what it takes to build the dairy community, and I’m driven by each of these moments,” Paskewitz said. One of her favorite parts of being Princess Kay are the ah-ha moments with consumers. “We all have a common connection within agriculture, and that’s food,” Paskewitz said. “Whether I’m in the classroom or visiting with farmers, my heart is lled when connections are made from farm to table.” However, Paskewitz also faces challenges in her role as an ambassador for the state’s dairy industry. It has been a tumultuous year for many
dairy farmers, and Princess Kay has experienced this with the dairy community. “While the economic hurdles remain high, our endurance and support for one another have grown exponentially,” Paskewitz said. “I am eager to bring dairy farmers and eaters together as one team. I hope that in my time left [as Princess Kay], I am able to move Minnesota dairy closer to achieving this goal.” As Paskewitz reects on her year since being named a nalist for Princess Kay, she often thinks about her childhood. Growing up, being a dairy princess was a goal for Paskewitz. Her cousins were Princess Kay nalists and helped her actualize her goals by becoming a county ambassador, and eventually princess. “I think many young girls imagine what it would be like to serve as Princess Kay of the Milky Way – I know I did,” she said. “From coronation to now, it’s been everything I’ve dreamed of and more. This community is blessed with countless leaders and passionate advocates, giving me countless opportunities to network and grow both personally and professionally.” Through her reign, Paskewitz has met and worked with many in the industry, making her industry knowledge more diverse. “This year has been a true testament to the heart dairy farmers have,” she said. “My role reects the stories I hear from dairy farmers and the curiosity of these I visit within our communities. I could never describe fully how grateful I am to serve in a role that works so closely with all aspects of dairy.” Later this month, county Turn to PASKEWITZ | Page 20
