GOODHUE, Minn. – Although her reign as Princess Kay of the Milky Way still has several months left, Haley Hinrichs said the role so far has been exciting and educational. “It’s been an unforgettable experience,” Hinrichs said. “All the events I’ve been to, I’ve been trying to take them all in and really remember everything.” The day before the opening of the 2016 Minnesota State Fair, Hinrichs received the crown as 63rd Princess Kay of the Milky Way, a role in which she promotes and teaches others about Minnesota’s dairy industry. The 20-year-old is nishing her sophomore year at Iowa State University where she is studying agricultural communications and agricultural education. When not out doing Princess Kay appearances this summer, Hinrichs will be home, helping her dad, Tim, and brother, Justin, work on their100-cow dairy near Goodhue, Minn. “I love milking cows. There were times in high school when it would be a stressful
day. I would come home and milk cows. The milkers were so calming and I could just do work, talk with my dad and I just loved it,” Hinrichs said. During the month of May, Hinrichs will focus on school tours. “When I walk into a school visit I’m never completely sure what type of group I’m going to get. Talking to kids in Goodhue is different than talking to ones in the Twin Cities. [Regardless], I try to focus on the nutritional benets and really interact with the kids,” she said. Talking with students ts in with her college studies. “Since I am an education major, I like interacting with the kids. I am very excited to be going into the schools. I know as a county dairy princess the school visits were one of my favorite parts,” Hinrichs said. June will be lled with dairy month events such as counties hosting a breakfast on the farm. In July, Hinrichs will take a break as Princess Kay and go on a three-week

events. It’s been cool to see so many different people and interact with different people,” Hinrichs said, reecting on her reign so far. Along with teaching others, Hinrichs has learned a few things herself. “There have been a lot of perceptions I’ve had about farmers or consumers or the dairy community or myself as an agriculturalist that have slowly been changing and becoming much better. While I get to teach everyone else about dairy, they’re always teaching me new things, too, as far as educating and communicating,” she said. Hinrichs said each appearance has been unique, and she couldn’t pick one as a favorite. She started her reign at the state fair. “The best way to describe those 12 days is I was doing a little bit of everything,” she said. There have also been ban-
quets, conventions and other farm gatherings. Plus, Hinrichs was able to see the new Vikings football stadium during a Fuel Up to Play 60 event this past fall. “I had a lot of fun at that and I know my dad and brother thoroughly enjoyed that as well,” she said. Perhaps one of the biggest learning curves Hinrichs has endured is the use of social media. Although she has had personal accounts in the past, she never used them much. “When I became Princess Kay, I knew I personally wanted to be the one making the [social media] posts. Because of that, it’s allowed me to be more open and get more outside my comfort zone and share my own story,” Hinrichs said. She also included her family in pictures on social media. “At times it might have been challenging for my dad and brother, but then they realized they were a big part of my dairy story so they said it was OK for them to be in a picture,” Hinrichs said. Throughout her reign, Hinrichs saw her social media page reach many people who don’t have dairy backgrounds. During May, Hinrichs is excited to connect with other young women who are county dairy princesses at a media training and promotional education weekend. It’s also when the next 12 Princess Kay nalists will be selected. “I’m excited to interact with them and bestow any type of wisdom that I can upon them to help them make the most of their experience,” Hinrichs said. Hinrichs knows she will be trying to make the most of her last few months as the reigning Princess Kay of the Milky Way. “I’m very thankful for all the people I’ve been able to interact with so far, but I’m also eager to see what this summer brings,” Hinrichs said. “I love what I’m doing. I love what Princess Kay is doing on a daily basis.”
