Younger generation’s quest to know By Roger Strom

It appears the younger generation's quest to know what goes into the production of the food they eat is strengthening the bond between consumer and producer. In its latest "Feed4Thought" survey, Cargill found that compared those over 55, twice as many young people (18-34) in the U.S. and China say they personally know a livestock or seafood farmer. As a result of what they learned about farming, 52 percent of the Generation Y (born between the early 1980s and 2000) say they changed their food preferences, three times the number of those over 55 that were willing to make changes. Surveys in Mexico, France and China showed similar results. Over 80 percent listed animal welfare as a major concern with almost half of them willing to pay more if it means animals are raised in better conditions. Interestingly, Americans are less willing to pay more (31 percent) compared to the Chinese (59 percent). A similar study by the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation also found consumers want to learn more about the "farm to fork" process. Joseph Clayton, CEO of the IFIC Foundation, says Americans have a growing appetite for more information about their food and technology is enabling them to access that information while also "driving transparency across the food supply chain." Consumers not only want to know where and how food is produced but they are also question-

ing the environmental impact of producing various foods and will look for brands they believe align with their values. As with the Cargill survey, people will change their buying decisions based on what they know about the food production process. According to the IFIC, "2019 will bring a larger focus on the food journey, greater attention to food safety and allergens, continued consumer concern about sugar and increased popularity of plant-based eating." While of the subject of eating trends….Nielson released its findings of 2018 food trends focusing on meat consumption. Sales of beef were up nearly 11 percent since 2015, a trend that's expected to continue with the average consumption expected to increase by almost 3 percent this year for an average of 59 pounds per person. They also found people are changing the way they buy beef with online meat sales increasing from 4 percent in 2015 to 19 percent last year. People, especially millennials, are using sites like "Crowd Cow" driving sales to over $10 million. More than 100 farms provide meat for Crowd Cow which lists the farmers name and how the animal was fed and cared for. And finally… the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have taken their message to a new level. In Lincoln, Neb., the group has erected a huge billboard featuring a Holstein saying, “I’m Me, not Meat. See the Individual. Go Vegan.” PETA

spokeswoman Amber Canavan says cows are “individuals” with unique personalities. She says “Some cows are more friendly, some cows are more shy.” And some people [really do] think cows can talk…. …jus-sayn

Quality people, products and customer service - a recipe for success. BY DIANE LEUKAM Staff writer

The Powerhouse team is proud to provide Central Minnesota with exceptional outdoor power solutions. Powerhouse Outdoor Equipment, with locations in St. Joseph and St. Cloud, carries top-quality power equipment with lines like Toro, Stihl, eXmark, Honda, Kubota, and Ariens. Craig and Kristin Wolf have owned the company since 2005, along with Victor and Ruth Boeckmann, who joined the ownership team in 2008. They are

looking forward to visiting with attendees of the Central Minnesota Farm Show, Feb. 26-28 at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud. They are confident the quality products they provide are essential to many who live in the country. “This is a chance to connect with our customer base and potential customer base,” Craig said. “There are a lot of people out there who own farms and acreage; all of that needs to be maintained.”

When it comes to maintenance of the products they sell, the Wolfs feel the industry has come full circle in the last few years. Quality in products and customer service has been the key to a rebounding in small businesses in the area, including their own. For some time, they were seeing business diverted to online and big box stores. “Some customers were swayed by perceived lower pricing, buying entry-level and disposable products and now we’re seeing a trend;

those customers are coming back in and saying ‘I’m done with the throwaways, I want something that’s going to work,’” Craig said. Kristin agreed. “Saving a few dollars didn’t help customers when they went into a store and couldn’t find anyone to help them or they got their equipment in a box. Then when they need service or parts they’re stuck or they have to drop it off and wait for three weeks.” Kristin said. With double-digit increases in their business in just the last year, customers are coming back, realizing the deal wasn’t what they thought it was. Powerhouse customers appreciate the advice they get on the floor. “Customer service is coming back into favor again and is a priority with our customers,” Craig said. “The price point is a factor in the purchase but it’s not the top priority.” Seeing and feeling the product before a purchase is also a plus. “It surprises me when people buy something like this without trying it out and getting their hands on it, being able to sit on it and ride it and know how it feels. I think that’s a big part of it,”

Kristin and Craig Wolf, of Powerhouse Outdoor Equipment, are excited to visit with attendees of the 2019 Central Minnesota Farm Show Feb. 26-28 at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud. PHOTO BY DIANE LEUKAM Kristin said. Knowing this, the company steers away from products that are found online and in big box stores. “We don’t carry a lot of the same products as the box stores,” Craig said. “We want to be better than that. We strive to differentiate from any other competition by still being a small business, carrying the best products out there and providing that level of service that only a small business can.” Teamwork is a core value of the company, beginning with the hiring of employees who handle customers in the most professional, helpful way possible. “I don’t care if they’ve even used a lawn mower before, if they share our core values that’s number one,” said Craig.

The Wolfs know it is important to retain quality employees and to train them. Once employees are on the Powerhouse team, it is rare for them to leave, with most hiring due to expansion and growth driven by superior customer service. “We strive to employ the most educated, helpful, friendly and trusted staff in the industry,” Craig said. And, putting the whole package together, the products themselves are at the foundation of the company. Consistently offering quality products has established Powerhouse Outdoor Equipment as one of the premier outdoor power equipment dealers in the area. As their motto states, “Right Products, Right Service. Guaranteed.”

Getting crops in the ground

Johnson Seed and Ag Services a one-stop shop for planters By Diane Leukam and Katelyn Asfeld, Staff Writers

When it comes to planters, the guys at Johnson Seed and Ag Services know what to do – and they know what to do for every farmer, no matter the size. “We try to be a one-stop shop for planters. We want to be able to sell anything and everything for a planter. The equipment is tailored to the customers for the customer,” Nick Hanson said. Hanson has been an employee of the dealership for three years, where he works alongside owner Peter Johnson. At the two locations, in Belgrade and Lake Lillian, the two men serve more than 300 customers, and their clientele list continues to grow. They provide maintenance, inspection and repair for planters, as well as crop services such as scouting fields, meter inspection and services and data management. The company sells a variety of new equipment related to planters, such as precision meters, data software and planter closing wheels, along with used equipment such as planters and parts. While the dealership is only made of two men, they are a powerhouse team. “When you call, you get us. The person that is selling the product is servicing the product. We understand our products very well because we are very hands-on,” Johnson said. Planting season, particularly the first three days, is stressful, but it is something they look forward to because they love to help the farmers get their crops in the ground in a timely manner. Johnson Seeds will be attending the Central Minnesota Farm Show and Johnson and Hanson look forward to meeting new people and making new connections. Additionally, they will have equipment on display for viewing. At the show, they will feature a row unit robot which will plant corn and spread fertilizer live at the River’s Edge Convention Center. Viewers will be able to see the difference in depth bands, row cleaners, fertilizer placement and seed tube. The men are excited to show attendees how they can retrofit a variety of different brands into one planter. “My No. 1 goal is always to create and be the best information stream related to the planter process, to help growers be more profitable, and to make sure we are servicing every single grower to the best of our ability,” Johnson said. For more information, give Nick Hanson a call at 320-979-6820, or Peter Johnson at 320-212-8551. Johnson Seed and Ag Services will be in booths A104-107.

Safety tips for parents of young farmers

People who live in cities, exurbs or suburbs may not come across farms very frequently. But millions of people, including children, still live on farms. In fact, in 2009 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that more than one million children under the age of 20 lived, worked or had a regular presence on farms in the United States. Protecting children from injury on farms, especially those who perform work on farms, is of paramount importance. The American Society of Safety Engineers offers the following safety tips to parents of children who will be spending time on farms. • Know and obey the laws. Various state and federal laws are in place to protect young children from farm-related accidents and injuries. Age requirements dictate which jobs children can perform on a farm, and parents should adhere to those requirements. Asking children to do more than they’re physically capable of can lead to accident, injury or even death. • Review equipment operation instructions. Before assigning children a task on the farm, parents should review the equipment operation instructions. Doing so can help parents reacquaint themselves with tools and equipment they may not have used in awhile, We are the authorized and that can make distributor for Kohler, MTU it easier for them to and Blue Star generators. teach kids how to use such equipment. In addition, reviewing equipment instructions may provide insight to parents un• Inspect equipment. Make sure tools are in proper working order, as broken or poorly working equipment increases the risk of accident or injury. • Enroll children in farm safety camps. The ASSE recommends that parents contact their local Cooperative Extension and Farm Bureau offices to enroll children in farm safety camps. Such camps can teach kids safe farming techniques and the proper ways to use age-appropriate tools. • Set a positive example. Another way for parents to protect their children on the farm is to set a positive example. Parents can do so in various ways. Using equipment properly, removing tractor keys from ignitions when tractors are not in use and exercising caution when using hazardous materials shows kids the importance of caution when working on farms. Hundreds of thousands of children perform jobs on farms across the country. Parents who want to teach their kids to farm should always do so with safety in mind.

Customized to Your Operation Specializing in Custom Pumping and Drag Hose Applications

Upper Midwest Pumping At Upper Midwest Pumping we offer timely, professional, and sought-after manure application services. Running multiple crews, utilizing our own equipment, having miles of hose, and operating with enough pumps to effectively reach far fields, we are your leading source for efficient manure pumping. We understand the ins and outs of the agricultural industry as well as manure handling. We’ve opted to specialize in drag hose application, which reduces the need for continuous back-and-forth travel – in turn, reducing overall work time and field disturbance. Operating with a 10-inch diameter hose and large pumps we are able to efficiently move as many gallons of liquid manure as possible per hour. Paired with that, we run three crews, and operate 24-hours a day throughout spring and fall. Just like the farm owners we serve, our work day doesn’t end when the sun goes down.

We serve dairy, beef, and hog operations of any size - from small family-run farms to large corporate enterprises. Contact us to arrange one-time or on-going manure pumping services.

Woeste knows harvesting, pumping businesses affect farmers’ bottom line

MUSSMAN Whether harvesting alfalfa or corn silage or pumping manure, Tim Woeste makes sure his companies are doing the very best custom work available. Tim Woeste Custom Harvesting, and a business he is a partner in, Upper Midwest Pumping, are both managed out of their location near Long Prairie. “We run state-of-the-art equipment to apply the manure,” Woeste said. “This is the farmers’ fertilizer for their crops for the coming year so we have to do it right, or it reflects their overall profit.” Upper Midwest Pumping, LLC was started in 2011 and is owned by Woeste and Brian Marthaler, who with 17 years of manure handling experience, stepped in as a co-owner in 2012 and the company had been growing exponentially since. What began as one hose crew and two employees is now three hose crews, 10 full-time employees and several part-time employees during the peak of the year when pumping and harvesting are going on. Most work is done within two hours of the

home base in Long Prairie, but they also work in the Dakotas and southern Missouri. Drag hose manure pumping is done with roughly nine miles of hose and the booster pumps needed to do it. Semi tankers and tractors and tanks handle fields that are not economical with hose, along with trucking of solid manure. GPS auto steer and flow meters help get the most even application of manure possible. A Nuhn Lagoon Crawler helps get lagoons emptied back to original capacity with minimal fuel. Tim Woeste Custom Harvesting was started in 2014 by Tim and his wife, Ammy. That business, too, has grown. One forage harvester has grown to three machines and a fleet of trucks to do any size job out there. They do every aspect of the operation from cutting and merging the hay to putting it on the pile. They have all the dozer tractors and packing tractors to ensure top-quality feed for their customers. “High-quality feed is something we take very

serious around here,” Woeste said. “Feed is monitored the whole time we are harvesting. With yield and moisture mapping on our machines, we are able to make on-the-go decisions as far as length of cut and other decisions that affect feed quality.” They cut and merge hay for their own crews as well as for other people. There are a lot of custom crews out there, so the biggest thing for us is to get the forages off the fields in a timelymanner in order to put up good, quality feed for our customers,” Woeste said. “It affects their bottom line. Nothing makes me smile more than when a farmer calls me to say how good the feed looks or how great the crops look.” Today both companies continue to experience tremendous growth across all areas of service. Whether their customers are looking for manure pumping or for one-time harvesting of corn silage, they can be assured that Woeste and his crews will show up with their own equipment and skilled manpower that is ready to work.

For 96 years, the Gilman community has had a creamery for farmers to utilize. The Gilman Coop Creamery was founded in 1923 and operated as a skimming station before it was converted to a butter factory. In the early 1930s, the creamery began selling feed and continues to provide services for their local patrons. The small-town community and the pleasant customers make the creamery a prime place to work, something employees Joe Boyle, Dan Szczech and Rosella Gullick have come to realize and appreciate. “The co-op is a good place to work,” Boyle said. “My schedule works for my lifestyle, and my co-workers are pleasant to work with.” Boyle, originally from Princeton, lives east of Gilman and has been working for the creamery since December 2010 as a milk truck driver. “When I applied, the creamery was looking for a driver,” Boyle said. “I drove milk truck for years but left and worked several odd jobs for awhile. When I saw the ad, I decided it was time to go back to driving milk truck.” Boyle, 41, works anywhere from 12-15 hours a day, driving from farm to farm. His route consists of stops in Foley, Gilman, Santiago, Foreston, Milaca and Princeton. After filling

Boyle enjoys his time over the road delivering

milk for other hardworking farmers, but also likes coming home to chat with local residents at the creamery – something Szczech gets to do daily. “I meet and talk to a lot of different farmers as they come to get their feed,” Szczech said. As the lead feed mixing man, Szczech makes sure the feed shed is running smoothly, mixing up the recipes per each farmer’s request. Born and raised in Gilman, Szczech does not

have far to drive – a good thing as his workday starts by 5 a.m. “I’ve been working for the creamery for the past three years,” he said. “I usually get done with my day anywhere between 6-10 p.m.” Despite the frigid Minnesota temperatures, Szczech, along with the other feed mixers, endure the cold dressed in their layers of clothing to ensure the farmers get their feed orders. “I enjoy working for

Gilman Co-op Creamery because my co-workers make it fun,” Szczech said. “It is a nice atmosphere to be a part of.” When Szczech is not working, he is tending to his beef cattle and spending time with his wife, Becky, and three children. Boyle and Szczech’s faces are not usually the first ones a customer sees when walking into the creamery. Service counter representative Gullick is usually standing at the front ready to help.

“I started working for the Gilman Co-op Creamery in October 2015,” she said. “I applied for the job at the creamery because I was looking for a job closer to home.” Gullick, originally from Park Rapids, lives in Gilman and works five days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., balancing and running the tills while helping customers locate items in the store. “I enjoy our regular customers as well as new people who walk through the door,” Gullick said. “It is nice getting to know people within the community.” Day-to-day, Gullick tries to provide the best service to customers because that is part of her personality. “I was born and raised on a dairy farm,” she said. “I was brought up to take pride in the work I do.” When customers have ag-related questions, Gullick is quick to respond because of her previous experience living on a farm with her husband, Terry, and two children. “I try to help anyone I can,” she said. For many years, Gilman Co-op Creamery has been a place where farmers can go to get the supplies they need. The pleasant smalltown interactions make the atmosphere a pleasant place to shop and work.

Stars align for Central Minnesota Farm Show Machinery Pete to offer insight on selling used equipment

Greg Peterson, a.k.a. Machinery Pete, will be a guest speaker in two sessions Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Central Minnesota Farm Show at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud. PHOTO SUBMITTED BY DIANE LEUKAM Staff writer

With the tight margins in all of agriculture, farmers want to get the best value possible for their machinery. When it comes time to make decisions on selling those expensive items, people from all around the world look to Machinery Pete for help. Organizers of the Central Minnesota Farm Show carry on a tradition of providing quality seminars and speakers each year. This year’s show will be held Feb. 26-28 at the River’s Edge Convention in St. Cloud, and they are happy to present Machinery Pete for their Wednesday, Feb. 27 lineup. During Session 1, from 10:30-11:45 a.m. in the Bell and Alexander rooms, Greg Peterson, a.k.a. Machinery Pete, will discuss the latest trends with used farm equipment values. In Session 2, from 1:30-2:45 p.m., Peterson will be telling tales from the auction trail. Peterson has been covering farm machinery auctions since 1989 and will share some of his favorite stories from along the way – some focused on unique tractors and machinery, others focused on people. These stories are sure to make everyone smile. Peterson has been living in Rochester for 29 years, but grew up in Benson, where his parents and two brothers still live. After high school he graduated from Gustavus Adolphus in 1988 with a degree in accounting. He enjoyed accounting but was not convinced he wanted to do it full time. Then in 1989, he received an invitation that would change his life. His father, Jerry Peterson, longtime John Deere dealer in Benson, called and invited him to lunch. He had an idea.

Little did either of them know at the time, but in Jerry’s hand he held his son’s future. It was a worn book, an auction price book, that a banker in Morris had put together in 1986. “He showed me the book and said, ‘what do you think?’” Peterson said. “I thought it was good information but I was 23, what do I know?” His father would not be dissuaded. “This is really good stuff,” Jerry said. “What can you do with it? Can you try it? There is something here.” That was 1989 and now, almost 30 years have gone into building the Machinery Pete brand into what it has become today. From Greg Peterson’s basement office in Rochester, the “brand” has become an extensive marketplace for buyers and sellers of used farm equipment. Farmers are able to access a vast selection of equipment listings in one place with innovative search tools that make it easy and fast to find relevant equipment. “We have 1,100 auctioneers that we are associated with,” Peterson said. “We keep a database with a million auction prices. [Database, in 1989, was] a term we didn’t know but that’s what we had.” Through the years, Peterson has passionately researched, tracked and reported on auction prices. In 2014, Farm Journal and Machinery Pete partnered to provide a more efficient marketplace for buying and selling used ag equipment. Peterson became a well-known personality, with an ever-growing presence in the used machinery world. He seemed to be everywhere. “The first 20 years people thought I was on

the road but really I was on the phone,” he said. The last 10 years, though, Peterson has traveled a lot. The company, now based in Chicago, uses multiple media platforms to reach hundreds of thousands of people. There are television and radio programs, Twitter and YouTube, among other outlets. Machinery Pete now has over 1,400 YouTube videos, telling the stories of farmers and their equipment, with more than 4.2 million views in 2018 alone. “It’s a way to make that business/emotional connection,” Peterson said. Those connections can be furthered when Peterson takes to Twitter, suggesting to his followers for instance, that “If you are going up I-94, stop at the local cafe for a piece of pie.” In July of 2015, MachineryPete.com launched its marketplace with leading-edge marketing solutions for dealers, informed and built with the online equipment shopper in mind, to create connections between buyers and sellers. Peterson founded the company with a twofold philosophy. “First, we help folks with hard business decisions,” he said. “So you have a combine or tractor to sell. Is it worth $80k? or $100k? We help them to make an informed business decision. Second, farmers connect to their equipment, especially to their tractors. They take pride in ownership. Maybe it belonged to their dad or their grandpa. They have an emotional connection to it.” Machinery Pete Continued on page 21

Central MN Farm Show | February 2019 • 21

Machinery Pete Continued from page 20 Those connections are demonstrated in stories told in the videos. Peterson is looking forward to connecting with people at the Central Minnesota Farm Show. He hopes to infuse positivity where lately there may have been a shortage. "These last few years have been difficult in ag, but oftentimes it is during these tough stretches where you can make decisions for your farming operation that can have long-range, out-sized positive results," he said. "And I think this is the case currently in the used farm equipment market."

Though he will be speaking in St. Cloud, he always keeps himself on the other end of the conversation. “When I go there I am listening,” he said. “I am like a sponge. Everyone has a story. In the last 30 years, that’s sort of the cool part; if you spend five minutes with anyone, there’s a story there.” But for Peterson, there is a little more to this show than many others. “I always look forward to events in Central Minnesota,” he said. “It’s like coming home.” Don’t miss Greg Peterson, a.k.a. Midwest Machinery’s equipment maintenance program delivers peace of mind BY DIANE LEUKAM Staff writer

At Midwest Machinery Company (MMC), their motto for equipment maintenance is “Field Team: Fully Inspected Equals Less Downtime.” With the last couple years of economic downturn in the agriculture industry, farmers have not been able to turn their equipment over as often as they had the five years previous. As the hours add up on machinery, it is easy to forget about the much-needed maintenance this equipment needs. Customers are encouraged to become Field Team members in order to take the worry out of maintenance needs. This program is designed to give farmers peace of mind while taking advantage of strong performance, enjoying longer equipment life and higher trade-in values when the time comes to upgrade. Mitch Kramer is a salesman at the Stewart location that helps sell Field Team. The farm equipment maintenance program helps farmers to stay up and running, avoiding downtime during the planting and harvesting seasons. With a busy 2019 season for Midwest Machinery’s Field Team, Kramer thanks his customers for the opportunity to show that the company is committed to them. “As I walk with customers through their sheds, we talk about what went right and what went wrong with each piece of equipment,” Kramer said. “With this [approach], customers are able to remember what they might have issues with. The worst part that I see about a shed is the fact that equipment is out of sight, which then is out of mind.” Mitch Kramer manages the Field Team program at Midwest Machinery’s Stewart location. The farm equipment maintenance Brandon Nelson works on a transmission program helps farmers to stay up and running, avoiding Feb. 6 at Midwest Machinery’s Stewart downtime during the planting and harvesting seasons. PHOTOS location. SUBMITTED Looking at individual inspection costs with MMC’s Field Team program, the credits outweigh the cost of the inspections. For instance, a combine inspection costs $490 with a labor credit of $500 and warranty credit of $500. “Most farms have the following equipment on the farm: planter, tractor, combine, platform and row crop corn head. These simple five units put customers in the Silver level of Field Team Benefits,” Kramer said.“With the growing demand of labor, the number of tillable acres staying close to neutral, and the cost of operating hours, we have to try to avoid downtime.” Benefits to being in the Field Team program are extensive, with loaner combines available if a covered combine is down for more than 24 hours during harvest for Silver Level members, half-rate trucking pickup and delivery for inspections, no after-hours fees for inspected Field Team machines, opportunities for support and training on products, and no payment/no interest until July 1. MMC pitches their field team program not from a desperate need for shop work, but instead, they are trying to become a TEAM with the customers. They are confident that as their sales, parts and service departments create relationships with customers, it will just get easier to become one big TEAM. Stop by the Midwest Machinery booths at the Central Minnesota Farm Show to learn more about becoming a part of the TEAM!

Peterson Farm Bros to speak at Central Minnesota Farm Show By Diane Leukam and Katelyn Asfeld

The Peterson Farm Bros from Assaria, Kan., will be speaking Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Central Minnesota Farm Show at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud. The brothers are a YouTube phenomenon and create musical parody videos to show viewers about life on the farm. Their first video, “I’m Farming and I Grow it,” received over 5 million views in the first two weeks and currently is over 11 million. PHOTO SUBMITTED The Central Minnesota Farm Show can be counted on to deliver interesting and timely presentations in their free seminars. The 2019 farm show will be held Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 26-28 at the River’s Edge Convention Center in St. Cloud. On Tuesday, the Peterson Farm Bros will be presenting an entertaining seminar for show-goers in Session 2, from 1:30-2:45 p.m. in the Bell and Alexander rooms. The brothers, young farmers from Kansas, educate people about farming through music parody videos they have created to draw the attention of people who know nothing about farming. The video, “I’m Farming and I Grow It,” was a parody of the song “I’m Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO. It was filmed throughout the month of June 2012 and was uploaded to the Peterson Farm Brothers YouTube channel June 25, 2012. Within two weeks, the video received over 5 million views and currently is over 11 million. The Petersons were astonished at how popular their video became and it instilled the motivation to create more. “People in the cities don’t want to watch videos on farming unless there’s something that draws them in and that’s the music,” Greg Peterson said. “People know the original songs and they watch the parodies.” The Petersons select songs based on their popularity; from there, they come up with their own lyrics. Parodies they have created include “Farmer Style” from the song “Gangnam Style” by Psy; “Takin’ Care of Livestock,” from the song

“Takin’ Care of Business,” by Bachman-Turner Overdrive; and “All About that Beef,” from the song, “All About that Bass,” by Meghan Trainor. A year after their first video went viral, the brothers started receiving requests to speak at various events, and the Central Minnesota Farm Show is one of those events. “I do over 80 speaking events a year, which, most farmers don’t get those kinds of opportunities,” Peterson said. “The reason people want to hear us speak is because of the popularity of the videos.”

The Peterson Farm Bros will be at the Central Minnesota Farm Show on Tuesday, February 26th

Peterson has given over 300 speaking presentations in 40 states and eight countries about the future of the agriculture industry. Nathan and Kendal travel and do speaking presentations as well, but fewer than Greg. At the presentations, the brothers talk about how the videos started and ways people in the audience can be advocates for agriculture. Presentations are given to farmers, youth and agriculturalists all over the world at banquets, conventions, conferences, farm shows, youth events, state and county fairs, schools and concerts. Greg is a 2013 Kansas State University graduate where he majored in agricultural communications and journalism. He also has a minor in music. His education, along with his passion for farming, helps greatly with the social media production and advocacy he does. Nathan graduated in 2016 from Kansas State University with a major in agriculture technology management, and Kendal is a 2018 graduate of Kansas State, with a major in agribusiness. “Definitely getting to see all of the different areas in the United States and Canada and being able to meet so many farmers, farm families and kids,” Peterson said of his favorite part of the promotion. “There’s a lot of kids that watch our videos, and we enjoy being positive role models and having a good influence on them.” The brothers plan to continue being active advocates for agriculture and to farm together as the fifth generation on their family farm.

WORDS OF WISDOM “The first supermarket supposedly appeared on the American landscape in 1946. That is not very long ago. Until then, where was all the food? Dear folks, the food was in homes, gardens, local fields, and forests. It was near kitchens, near tables, near bedsides. It was in the pantry, the cellar, the backyard.” Joel Salatin, Folks, This Ain't Normal: A Farmer's Advice for Happier Hens,

“Let us not forget that the cultivation of the earth is the most important labor of man. When tillage begins, other arts will follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of civilization. “ Daniel Webster “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you're a thousand miles from the corn field.” Dwight D. Eisenhower “The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.” Wendell Berry, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture

Though it’s easy to look at the tech industry and think this increasingly influential sector is what makes the world go round, something closer to the very core of the Earth may be what’s driving your economy. The agricultural sector plays a strategic role in a nation’s economic development and prosperity. From the earliest days, agriculture has been heralded as playing a crucial role in North American culture. Farmers who grow produce and raise livestock for meats and other products have long exemplified what it means to work hard and take initiatives to be self-sufficient. The symbiotic nature of agriculture and the economy is noticeable when examining the ups and downs of each. This is because food production and the potential of agriculture extends beyond the fields and local food stands. These resources impact supply chains and other markets. A strong agriculture base influences other employment sectors like food manufacturing, biotechnology, hospitality, machinery building, and much more, while a weak agriculture can adversely affect those sectors. While it can be difficult for residents of developed nations to visualize agriculture’s effect, one only needs to turn to impoverished and developing nations to see just how big an impact agriculture can have on an economy. Agriculture provides food and raw materials, eventually creating demand for goods produced in non-agricultural sectors. Also, food provides nutrition that can serve as the foundation of a healthy nation. Earning a living in agriculture strengthens purchasing power, which fuels other markets. Eventually, farming can pave the way for development, including roads, markets, shipping services, exporting, and many other sectors. Agriculture is an important economic building block. An especially important sector, the agricultural industry, when supported, can contribute greatly to sustained economic growth.
