4-H members honored in youth program

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn.

– During the 10th annual Minnesota Dairy Showcase, more than $50,000 in donations were awarded to youth in the 4-H dairy project at the Minnesota State Fair.

“I am thankful for the donors,” said Emily Benrud, winner of 2018 dairy showcase. “It is comforting to know they put faith and trust in us, the future of the dairy industry.”

Benrud, along with 25 other 4-H dairy members, were honored at the showcase event Aug. 26 during the Minnesota State Fair in Falcon Heights, Minn.

“This is not just an awards ceremony, it’s the future,” said Kelsey Erf, recipient from Washington County. “It is such an honor. I am proud to represent the dairy community.”

With hopes to recognize the in-

volvement, dedication and passion of Minnesota’s dairy youth, the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association and Minnesota 4-H Dairy Development Committee joined forces to celebrate these successes.

Over the past 10 years, more than $350,000 was donated to the program, 80 percent of which goes directly to the 4-H members and 20 percent to the 4-H Dairy Program.

This is the second consecutive year Benrud was named the top 4-H dairy member in the showcase.

“Thank you to everyone on the committee for their hard work,” Benrud said. “This is humbling. Honestly, I was just happy to make it in top 25. To see all the quality kids in Minnesota, I didn’t care what place I got.”

The 18-year-old daughter of Roger and Michelle Benrud had a successful year in the dairy community, representing Goodhue County at the Minnesota State Fair.

“Showcase is not just the animals,” Benrud said. “It’s the practices, contests and events throughout the year.”

“All my achievements in FFA, 4-H and dairy are all combined here,” said Ella Bauer, showcase recipient. “This is recognizing everything.”

This year’s 25 recipients represented a large area of Minnesota, although some counties stood out more than others.

“Five recipients from Goodhue County is a testament to the hard work put into the dairy program,” Benrud said of the county’s dairy judging and dairy quiz bowl coaches.

Five individuals were represented in both Stearns and Goodhue counties this year, along with ve sets of siblings.

In an effort to recognize 4-H dairy members of all ages, the committee developed a rising star program this year. The program is designed to recognize 10 individuals who are in the younger divisions at the state fair.

While nine individuals in this category were recognized

in the top 25, Adhyn Schell, of Winona County, was recognized as this year’s rising star.

LITCHFIELD, Minn.

– High school agriculture teacher Tyler Warren was nationally recognized as the Outstanding Early Career Teacher of 2018 in August.

This honor, presented to instructors who have been teaching for less than eight years, is a means of encouraging young teachers to remain in the profession and to recognize their participation in professional activities.

“I was a little shocked,” said Warren about receiving the award. “I still feel like a young teacher trying to gure a few things out.”

This fall will be Warren’s fourth year teaching agriculture and advising the FFA chapter at Eden Valley-Watkins High School in Eden Valley, Minn.

Being raised on his family’s dairy farm inuenced how Warren works and teaches today.

Carol, and uncle milk 140 cows and farm 700 acres of corn, soybeans, alfalfa and oats in Litcheld, Minn.

Warren helps on the farm year-round. He milks cows and during the summer months does eldwork, and after school starts he tries to help whenever he can.

“I really enjoy helping on the farm,” Warren said.

“Some people look at me like I’m crazy, but I think it helps to keep me current on the stuff I’m teaching.

It’s fun when I’m teaching a welding class to bring up a story about xing a piece of equipment, or when I’m teaching college agronomy and I can tell the students what we do on our farm.”

Warren also learned a work ethic that carried into his teaching career.

“Growing up on a farm you learn to work hard and that you need to get stuff done,” Warren said. “If you don’t nish a chore now, it’s still going to be there an hour

from now or a day from now, so that’s really resonated with me.

Learning those lessons growing up on the farm has really helped me as a teacher.”

To be nominated for the national award, Warren rst won the state award in March, making him Minnesota’s Young Ag Teacher of 2018.

ture teachers and was also critiqued on his personal teaching philosophy, instruction method, leadership development through FFA, experiential learning, partnerships in the community, how he markets his classes and what he does for professional growth.

With this title, Warren represents National Region III comprised of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Despite growing up on a dairy farm, Warren knew he always wanted to be a teacher.

“When choosing a content area to teach, I knew from growing up on my family’s dairy farm that I really loved farming and agriculture,” Warren said. “I guess my passions of teaching and agriculture kind of made sense to go hand in hand and pursue a degree in ag education.”

He credits his success to his co-teacher and mentor, Tracy Huhn, who has been an instructor at Eden Valley-Watkins since 2007. She called Warren when he was teaching at Hutchinson High School and was looking for a second teacher to help her in the Eden Valley-Watkins agriculture department.

“I was extremely ecstatic,” Warren said. “I wanted to teach closer to home. My parents’ dairy farm is south of Watkins, so it was right in my

backyard. She’s been a great mentor to me and what she’s done to the program is phenomenal.”

As far as the classroom goes, Warren splits the department with Huhn.

“We try to offer classes that our students want and need, and I think that’s made us successful as an ag department, as well,” Warren said.

Warren said Christa Williamson has been a supporter in his early career.

“She’s the ag teacher at Kerkhoven-MurdockSundburg, and she mentored me through college and student teaching,” Warren said.

His parents also get some credit.

“I’ve learned a lot of content from my dad,” Warren said. “I go to him when I need help with welding or have a question about agronomy. He’s been a great informal teacher to me.”

Warren learned from his mother, too.

“She taught Sunday school for a lot of years,” Warren said. “Watching her, I learned to have compassion with the kids and establish a relationship with them. She’s done a great job at teaching me that growing up.”

Warren feels fortunate to teach at Eden Valley-Watkins High School.

“It’s a great school and the administration, the parents and the community have been super supportive, and I think that’s made my job easier, too,” he said.

Warren’s goals for the future include becoming a better teacher and making his classes more impactful. He also hopes to provide students with opportunities to help them discover what they want to do in their future.

“I think back to the group of seniors that I had graduate last spring, and it was really cool to build a relationship with them over the years, whether I had them in class or FFA or both,” Warren said. “… That’s really fun to see an eighth grader involved in classes and programs and watch them develop into a young adult or young leader in the future.”

The award will be presented to Warren and six other regional winners in November at the 2018 National Association of Agricultural Educators Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

The “Mielke” Market Weekly By Lee Mielke A little optimism with Class III price

Media reports were abundant Monday regarding the U.S. and Mexico reaching agreement on a re-tooled North American Free Trade Agreement. Next stop is Canada to keep the trio intact. Word was that Canada may give some concessions even on dairy issues. Meanwhile; U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced steps the Agriculture Department will take to “assist farmers in response to trade damage from unjustied retaliation by foreign nations.”

As announced last month, USDA will authorize up to $12 billion in programs, consistent with World Trade Organization obligations, to “assist agricultural producers to meet the costs of disrupted markets.”

USDA’s Farm Service Agency will administer the Market Facilitation Program to provide payments to corn, cotton, dairy, hog, sorghum, soybean, and wheat producers starting September 4, 2018.

The plan directs $3.6 billion of the $4.7 billion in direct payments to soybean growers, at $1.65 per bushel paid out to 50 percent of 2018 production.

Smaller reimbursements will also go for corn, wheat, and cotton, as well as hog farmers.

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service will administer a Food Purchase and Distribution Program to purchase up to $1.2 billion in commodities unfairly targeted by unjustied retaliation. USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service will distribute these commodities through nutrition assistance programs such as The Emergency Food Assistance Program and child nutrition programs.

Through the Foreign Agricultural Service’s Agricultural Trade Promotion Program $200 million will be made available to develop foreign markets for U.S. agricultural products.

FC Stone calculates the payout to dairy producers will be about 12 cents per cwt. or about $127.4 million. Another $84.9 million will go to commodity purchases, which FC Stone says will likely raise cheese prices about 3 cents per pound or 26 cents per cwt. for Class III milk.

“This is truly unlike other farm aid packages” says FC Stone. “The program seems signicantly limited by the stipulations and conditions that need to be met in order to spark both direct payments and purchase programs. Additionally, the whole thing remains fairly vague as if the government is leaving themselves an out. Mr. Perdue literally said that the aid package could go away tomorrow if we can work

out deals with major trade partners.

“The farmer aid package is generally supportive of dairy markets currently,” FC Stone concludes. “We say generally because there is a farmer payment plan here, we just don’t see that as a material enough payment to make any meaningful difference to milk production going forward. We await word on how any cheese and butter purchases may happen within the scope of this program. Depending on how they buy product and what it’s used for, the impact could be more or less bullish. So net bullish, but a new trade deal with Mexico is still likely a more supportive feature,” according to FC Stone.

The National Milk Producers Federation says the plan “falls far short of addressing the losses dairy producers are experiencing due to trade retaliation resulting from the Administration’s imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs. The dairy-specic nancial assistance package centered on an estimated $127 million in direct payments, represents less than 10 percent of American dairy farmers”losses caused by the retaliatory tariffs imposed by Mexico and China” “The price drop resulting from these tariffs has not been gradual, it’s hurting U.S. dairy producers right now and will continue to do so. Since the retaliatory tariffs were announced in late May, milk futures prices have lost over $1.2 billion through December 2018. Milk prices for the balance of the year are now expected to be $1.10 per-hundredweight lower than were estimated just prior to the imposition of the tariffs on U.S. dairy exports,” NMPF says.

NMPF adds that a study by Informa Economics on the impact of the retaliatory dairy tariffs “projects dairy farmer income will take a hit of $1.5 billion this year if the tariffs remain in place through the end of 2018. This loss compounds to $16.6 billion if the tariffs are left in place long term over the next ve years, through 2023. The impact of lost sales to China account for most of that harm, accounting for 73 percent of the total. That sizable decline in farmer incomes will compound the low prices and nancial losses that dairies have already felt,” NMPF warned.

The International Dairy Foods Association and the Milk Processor Education Program stated that they “support USDA’s efforts to provide additional benets to people across the country who don’t have regular access to nutritious milk and dairy products, while helping to alleviate some of the nancial difculties facing dairy farmers and companies that stem from lost export sales.”

The USDA’s Economic Research Service reports in its August Farm Income Forecast that Net farm income is forecast to decrease $9.8 billion (13.0 percent) from 2017 to $65.7 billion in 2018, after increasing $13.9 billion (22.5 percent) in 2017. In ination-adjusted 2018 dollars, net farm income is forecast to decline $11.4 billion (14.8 percent) from 2017 after increasing $13.0 billion (20.3 percent) in 2017.

If realized, ination-adjusted net farm income would be just slightly above its level in 2016, which was its lowest level since 2002. It adds that Receipts for milk are expected to decline $2.8 billion (7.4 percent) in 2018.

The August Federal order Class III milk price is $14.95 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 85 cents from July, $1.62 below August 2017 and the lowest August Class III price since 2009 when it was at $11.20. It equates to $1.29 per gallon, up 8 cents from July and compares to $1.21 a year ago. The eight month average stands at $14.44, down from $16.09 a year ago and compares to $14.13 in 2016.

Class III futures late Friday morning portended a September Class III at $16.47; October, $16.64; November, $16.58; and December at $16.37 per cwt.

The August Class IV price is $14.63, up 49 cents from July, $1.98 below a year ago, and the second highest Class IV price this year. Its eight month average is at $13.85, down from $15.46 a year ago and compares to $13.57 in 2016.

The roller coaster took most dairy prices higher as it entered the Labor Day weekend. Block Cheddar closed the week and the month at $1.6950 per pound, up 2 1/2-cents on the week, up 15 1/2-cents on the month, and 15 1/2-cents above a year ago when they tumbled 11 cents. The barrels nished at $1.6450, up 4 1/2-cents on the week, up 21 1/2-cents on the month, and 12 1/2-cents above a year ago. 6 cars of block traded hands on the week at the CME (33 on the month) and 34 of barrel (180 on the month).

Milk availability has markedly tightened for cheese production in the Central U.S., according to Dairy Market News, with the range from Class to $2.00 over. Some cheesemakers report spot milk is unavailable. As a result, mozzarella producers are increasing usage of nonfat dry milk to fortify. Production activity in most varieties is picking up, as demand is steady to stronger. Some cheesemakers report a growing and new customer base which is bullish for the market Western cheese producers have no trouble nding milk and cheese output is generally steady. Sales continue to improve, but a number of suppliers report that buyers are sensitive to offer prices. Barrels are in stronger demand than blocks, but the prices of both are rm. Food chains continue to demand more cheese for pizza. Some contacts say the USDA purchase of cheese is impacting inventory levels. Stocks tightened a little, but continue to be widely accessible.

CME butter closed the month at $2.2150 per pound, down 4 1/2-cents on the week, down 10 1/2-cents on the month, and 29 1/4-cents below a year ago when it lost 12-cents. 12 cars were sold on the week and 73 on the month.

ConƟnued from MIELKE | Page 10 but participants see lower prices as an opportunity to attract more international buyers. Butter output dropped slightly in recent weeks as more milk went into Class I utilization. Several vendors report abundant stocks and are looking for additional sales outlets.

Grade A nonfat dry milk saw a Friday close at 88 1/2-cents per pound, 1 1/2-cents higher on the week, 2 1/4-cents above a year ago, and up 4 1/2-cents from August 1. 15 cars were sold at the CME this week, with 89 loads for the month.

Dry whey was bid 2 cents higher on the week to a new record 50 cents per pound, 6 3/4-cents higher than where it was on August 1.

In global headlines; Irish Farm Journal reported that 31,493 metric tons of skimmed milk powder were sold through the European Commission’s Intervention tender this month, up sharply from the 2,408 MT sold last month.

HighGround Dairy reports that Fonterra Co-operative Group revised its 2018/19 forecast farmgate milk price from $7.00 per kgMS to $6.75 per kgMS. Fonterra Chairman, John Monaghan, said the change was in response to “stronger milk supply signals coming from some of the world’s key dairy producing regions.”

A 90 cent drop in the July U.S. All Milk price average could not be offset by lower feed prices and pulled the July milk feed price ratio down after it rose in June for the rst time in six months. The USDA’s latest Ag Prices report puts the July ratio at 1.91, down from 1.98 in June and down from 2.27 in July 2017.

The index is based on the current milk price in relationship to feed prices for a dairy ration consisting of 51 percent corn, 8 percent soybeans and 41 percent alfalfa hay. One pound of milk today purchases 1.91 pounds of dairy feed containing that blend.

The U.S. All-Milk price averaged $15.40 per cwt., down 90 cents from June and $1.80 below July 2017. The price ranged from $14.10 in New Mexico and $14.20 in Michigan to Florida’s $20.10. California was at $15.05, down 58 cents from June; and Wisconsin was at $15.30, down $1.20 from June.

July corn averaged $3.47 per bushel, down 11 cents from June and 2 cents per bushel below July 2017. Soybeans averaged $9.10 per bushel, down 45 cents from June and 32 cents per bushel below a year ago. Alfalfa hay averaged $179 per ton, down $2 from June but $26 per ton above a year ago.

The Daily Dairy Report points out that “the U.S. milk over-feed margin fell 61 cents from June to just under $6.76 per cwt. based on the dairy Margin Protection Program calculation, making it the second lowest in 2018 and the third lowest since May 2016.”

Looking at the cow side of the ledger; the July cull price for beef and dairy combined averaged $66.80 per cwt., up 50 cents from June, $10.50 below July 2017 and $4.80 below the 2011 base average of $71.60 per cwt.

Milk cows for the quarter averaged $1,320 per head in July, down from $1,360 in April, and $300 per head below July 2017. They averaged $1300 in California, unchanged from April but $300 below a year ago. Wisconsin cows averaged $1250 per head, down from $1320 in April and $1650 per head in July 2017.

The DDR’s Sarina Sharp wrote in the August 24 Milk Producers Council newsletter that Heifer supplies are adequate to maintain the dairy herd even at the current cull rate, but dairy producers show no inclination to keep their collective barns as full as they once were. Heifer buyers are scarce.

At auctions around the country, springer values have slumped to new lows. The combination of high slaughter volumes and cheap heifers suggests that contraction in the U.S. dairy herd continues.

The week of August 6 saw 60,948 milk cows head to slaughter. Sharp says “That’s the largest slaughter volume for this time of year since 1986, when the industry was buying out whole herds and killing them.”

She adds that “Across the pond, scorched pastures and dwindling feedstocks are prompting a similar uptick in cull-rates. Growth in milk output in the world’s two largest dairy regions is likely to slow just as demand for dairy seems to be ramping up. At long last, the dairy industry may be able to sustain a rally that makes milking cows worthwhile,” she concludes.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) members accepted nine offers of export assistance this week to help capture contracts to sell 557,770 pounds of Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, 119,050 pounds of butter, and 1.819 million pounds of whole milk powder. The product has been contracted for delivery in Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania from August through February 2019.

Many of the issues remain the same, particularly the rise and fall of milk prices, though it appears the extremes have increased. I think the advent of computers and futures and options trading were two of the biggest changes I’ve witnessed.

I often told the story of the dairyman who won the $2 million lottery and when asked what he was going to do with all that money, he replied, “I think I’ll keep dairying until it’s gone.”

It would be funny if it weren’t so true. One thing for sure that hasn’t changed is my respect and admiration for dairy producers and what they have to deal with day to day, year to year. Most consumers have no idea. I’m proud to be a part of this great industry but I am grateful that I have been on this side of the barn door.

A Snapshot of today’s grain, feed, & dairy markets

Dairy and grain markets have seen little change in recent weeks. Seasonally, grain prices are transitioning into a harvest trading pattern. Buyers, who some may describe as “vultures” during harvest, know that a portion of physical crop has to move. This leaves little need for price incentive to encourage seller activity, and provides the annual reminder of the importance of contracting grain when markets rally.

Weather has been conducive to a strong finish for fall crops. Some locations have been blessed with a little too much rain, as 10 or more inches have fallen in some areas creating silage harvest challenges.

Dairy margins remain pressured with a small island of reprieve built into Class III futures for the balance of 2018.

Reports of dairy operations making the decision to sell cows and call it quits are becoming more frequent as the industry goes through another consolidation phase.

In the latest milk production report USDA released data confirming July as being the first month to reflect a significant slow down in milk production. History has

proven that poor margins lead to less production, and eventually an improving price environment. If you are able to hang on “This too will pass”!

As a commodity trader one of our daily activities is to search the news for the next big risk that could impact the clients we work with. Over the past several weeks there has been elevated concern over the possibility of a wave of emerging economy debt defaults.

Since the 2008 financial crisis only three countries have reduced government debt. Most countries have added substantial debt due to over spending in their fiscal balance sheets. Like the 911 attack and the 2008 financial crisis an event that impacts money flow and the ability to borrow money to meet spending obligations can and will have severe repercussions. If a country needs debt to function and there is no willing lenders, things will get bad fast!

Fletcher family’s herd grazed year-round

PURDY, Mo. – Cows at Edgewood Dairy spend their free time strolling through alfalfa, crab grass and Matua prairie bromegrass, among others; after all, it is where the Fletcher family feels their dairy herd belongs.

“The main reason I nd [dairying] unique on our farm is our ability to graze,” Au-

brey Fletcher said. “We are far enough south to capture summer annuals and far enough north to have the ability to grow grass well.”

as well as her sister-in-law, Mikala Fletcher, milk 310 cows in a double-22 parabone parlor.

Charles manages the dairy, while Melissa and Aubrey manage the creamery. Wanda also aids with creamery operations as well as watches grandchildren. Tyler and Leon execute the delivery routes for the creamery. Tyler helps with irrigation, maintenance and A.I. Mikala helps on the farm when she can, but is attending Evangel University, Springeld, Mo. The family employs others for help with milking, cheesemaking and milk bottling.

Charles’ father was a dairy-

man while he was growing up; however, the Edgewood Dairy farmsite was purchased by Charles and Melissa in 2001.

“My in-laws moved to the current farm to become a grazing dairy,” Aubrey said. … “I grew up on a dairy myself and never thought I would marry a dairyman.”

The herd is crossbred between Jersey, Holstein, Swedish Red, New Zealand Friesian and Normande. The farm’s August test showed a 3.9 percent butterfat content with a 3 percent protein content in the milk.

The cows at Edgewood Dairy are averaging almost 13,000

pounds of milk per cow per year, according to Aubrey.

“We breed for a lower stature, higher components type cow,” Aubrey said. “We want a good grazer with good milk for cheese yields. … We learned over the years that a large Holstein is not the best cow suited for a grazing system. We needed a smaller framed animal for maximum grazing.”

The cows have access to a fresh 5-acre paddock aŌer every milking. The farm is comprised of 260 acres, all of which are used for grazing year-round. fed a grain ration in the milking parlor.

The milking herd is split into two groups in order to not overgraze the paddocks. During milking, fencing and gates are switched. After the cows are milked, they are put onto a fresh paddock.

“Milking is a two-person job, mainly for the fence switches and bringing in the second group,” Aubrey said of the farm’s 4 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. milking schedule.

The Fletchers are happy with their decision to mold their dairy around a grass-fed based system.

“Our goal is to match peak grass growth with peak lactation,” Aubrey said. “Monitoring grass growth is a big part of what we do. The cattle have to have 45 pounds of dry matter intake per day.”

The majority of the herd is dried off in December and January, and calve in during February and March. The Fletchers raise all of their own replacements using a converted commercial chicken barn.

“We have them on an accelerated feed program,” Aubrey said. “We typically have over 200 calves at one time.

We wean them at 6 weeks.”

The farm’s grade-A milk, primarily sold to Dairy Farmers of America, Inc., is used for uid milk consumption.

As much milk as is needed to meet the demands of the creamery is purchased from DFA. The remaining portion is either, bottled at Edgewood Creamery or processed into cheese.

“DFA treats us like any other milk plant, where we buy our own milk, although it never leaves our farm,” Aubrey said, “At the creamery, we make cheese three times per week and bottle milk

three times per week. We sell to over 35 grocery stores and 50 restaurants.”

The family is being paid $15.05 per hundredweight of milk, as of their most recent milk check.

“We added the creamery in August 2015 to help add income to our farm,” Aubrey said. “Currently, the market is not good and dairies everywhere are struggling. Having the creamery helps with farm expenses.”

The creamery includes a retail area with a window, allowing visitors to watch the cheesemaking process. The Fletchers also open their farm for tours.

“We want our customers to be able to see where their food comes from, and we make that possible,” Aubrey said.

“At our creamery, customers can see our cows grazing the lush pastures surrounding the creamery and actually watch the cheeses being made.”

Despite being openly concerned for the dairy industry given the low milk price, Aubrey said they have ideas of how to expand their creamery. New products, further market research and possibly agritourism are being considered.

“I love being a dairy farmer and the lifestyle it has given our family,” Aubrey said. “We are able to raise our children up to learn important, core values, such as responsibility, work ethic and compassion. With dairying there are many ups and downs, and being able to weather the bad brings about character and resilience. I love caring for our girls (cows); they will always hold a special place in my heart. If it weren’t for them, we would not have a home.”

First of the month sparks change on dairy

– With the turn of a calendar month, the Krueger family prepared for drastic changes to their family and farm life.

Scott and Stephanie Krueger moved their oldest daughter, Madison, into her

freshman dorm at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Sept. 1 in River Falls, Wis. But the Kruegers’ day began long before then, rst adjusting routine farm chores in order to attend the FFA dairy show at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, Minn.

“This is an entirely new experience for us,” Stephanie said. “Both showing animals and sending off our oldest to college.”

The Kruegers and their children – Madison, 18, Montana, 15, Mausten, 10, and Murdock, 7 – milk 100 cows on their dairy, Sunshine Dairy, in Sibley County near Arlington, Minn.

On the morning of Sept. 1, the family parted ways to accomplish feeding before the sun rose to make it to the dairy show by 8:30 a.m.

As Scott mixed feed for the milking herd at 4:30 a.m., Mausten organized buckets for feeding calves milk. Mausten’s grandfather, Ron, nished the chore after morning milking.

Stephanie fed grain to the youngstock.

“Usually, Scott does not do any of the feeding until after milking,” Stephanie said. “Our milking schedule stayed the same, but we moved around the other chores to be on the road on time this morning.”

Milking began around 5 a.m., with Ron and the hired hand, Andrew Bullert, making their way through the 100-stall tiestall barn.

Scott, Ron and Bullert typically milk cows in the morning, and Scott Bullert and the Krueger girls milk at night. If Bullert has a scheduled day off, then Stephanie will milk, as well.

“We each have our own routine, starting with a certain cow and making our way down the barn,” Bullert said. “It works for us to work side by side.”

With an adjustment to the chore schedule, the Kruegers were hoping to be heading to the Twin Cities by 6 a.m. However, with a down cow in the barn, Scott and Stephanie spent an additional half hour in the barn.

“Something always comes up when you have other things to do,” Scott said.

At the same time, Madison and Montana were already at the state fair, prepping their four dairy heifers for the show. The sisters had spent the past few days at the fair as part of the FFA encampment.

“Neither Scott or I showed at all growing up,” Stephanie said. “Madison has been showing since she was in rst grade and one day hopes to show on the

colored shavings.”

By 6:30 a.m., Scott, Stephanie and Mausten were on their way to the state fair. The Kruegers’ youngest son would spend the day with Grandpa Ron and Grandma Pam. For the 1.5-hour drive, Scott and Stephanie drove separately.

“We’ll bring two cars up to the fair, but then leave one with Madison in Wisconsin,” Scott said.

As the Kruegers participated in the FFA show, Ron and Bullert nished daily chores.

“We wouldn’t be leaving today if we didn’t have the help at home,” Stephanie said.

Ron purchased the 180-acre farm site in 1981, although the family’s original farmstead is located only a few miles away.

The original barn held 28 cows at the north end of the facilities. By the mid ‘90s, the Kruegers began expanding, nishing the project in the early 2000s.

“To make it in the ‘80s, we had to milk more,” Ron said. “At one point, we were milking 50 cows in the 28 stalls. We had enough cows to ll the barn if we built on.”

Scott came to the farm in 1995 after graduating from Ridgewater College in Hutchinson, Minn. He farmed in partnership with his parents until January 2016, when Scott and Stephanie took full ownership of the dairy. At that time, Stephanie left her full-time job as an insurance agent and returned to the farm full time.

With Scott’s return, the dairy not only expanded in terms of animal units, but also with industry technologies. Overtime, the third-generation dairy farmer converted the barn to tunnel ventilation, added a maTurn to KRUEGERS| Page 17

The Kruegers use a box in the hayloft to hold the TMR. Feed is distributed to the milking herd ďƒžve times throughout the day. “All of these things make us more competitive and the job easier,â€? Scott said.

Ron agreed. “We’ve always had ups and downs in the industry, but this has been a long down time,� he said. “We do everything we can to get every pounds of milk, even if that’s not necessarily a good thing for the industry as a whole. It’s what’s good for us as farmers right now.�

ing the family, especially during show season when Madison and Montana are busy at the fairs.

The FFA dairy show was complete by 12:30 p.m., and the Kruegers were pleased with how the day went.

Madison and Montana brought four heifers to the fair – a winter yearling, two fall calves and a spring calf – with the animals placing ďƒžrst, third, fourth and fourth, respectively. “The show went really well,â€? Scott said. “There’s always so many people you have to work around while at the fair, and we were there on a record attendance day.â€?

By early afternoon, the Kruegers changed their mind-

set, from showing cattle to moving in a college student.

Montana remained at the state fair with the animals as Scott, Stephanie and Madison drove to River Falls, Wis. Mausten stayed at the fair with Stephanie’s mother, who drove up earlier in the day.

Madison is a freshman, studying animal science with a pre-veterinary medicine emphasis. “She has always had a passion for animals. She told her third-grade teacher she was going to be a vet when she grew up,� said Scott of his eldest daughter.

Stephanie agreed. “At 3 years old, Madison would watch the vet perform

said. “But I don’t know what I’m going to do when harvest season comes.�

With one child off at college and the others starting school this week, life of the Krueger family will start looking a little different.

“We got serious about no-till three years ago,” Bechtold said. “In that rst year, it was amazing how much runoff was reduced.”

Bechtold and his brother, Delbert, crop farm 1,100 acres with sustainable farming practices, such as minimum tillage and no-till, as well as some cover cropping, on their dairy farm, Bechtold Bros. LLC, near St. Joseph, Minn.

Bechtold was a part of the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District’s soil health tour Aug. 29.

The purpose of the event was to highlight cropping systems and how farmers could adapt those practices to their own operation to improve soil health.

On Bechtold’s property, tour attendees viewed a corneld planted on no-till sandy loam soils. The 86-day variety crop was planted two weeks after a burn down of cereal rye.

corn into rye and that was a disaster,” Bechtold said. “You have to wait until it dies. This is all a learning curve for us.

I could write a book about what’s gone wrong, but we keep trying.”

Unlike a majority of the Bechtolds’ acreage, which is minimally tilled and receives manure as fertilizer, about 300 acres are strictly no-tilled year after year. Those acres do not receive any manure application.

“Manure doesn’t benet the elds at all because we use a starter fertilizer when we plant in the spring,” Bechtold said.

Additionally, cereal rye is used on 30 percent of the total cropland as a cover crop.

“We plant cereal rye in the fall, unless we’re planting small grains afterwards,” Bechtold said. “Then we don’t plant rye.”

Bechtold and his family rst experimented with no-till practices to save them time. Previously, they chisel plowed every eld in the fall and then disced in the spring before planting.

We aren’t really doing anything in the fields right now. We are just in a holding pattern. We have been in a swath that has missed most substantial rains all summer. Our new seedings are in poor RAINFALL condition. Milk for our students, meals for our schedules Area schools have been busying getting ready to welcome back students for another year of learning. A few weeks ago, one of the two school districts in our county sent a notice to families that they would no longer be able to offer a milk break for elementary students due to scheduling conicts.

Thankfully, our local ADA stepped up and spoke out. They posted on Facebook the school administration’s decision to eliminate the school milk break.

Concerned parents, grandparents and dairy families bombarded the district ofce with their disappointment in the new school policy. They cited scientic reasons why milk was important in the development of children. They also pointed out that several of the school families were dependent upon the dairy industry. Needless to say, the administration gured out a way to incorporate the milk break into the daily school schedule for elementary students. Thank you for stepping up to educate people about how dairy is a daily part of our lives. I have shared one of the recipes the ADA put out to help celebrate the taste of the season.

Speaking of seasons, it is that time again. The potato trucks are heaped high with potatoes rumbling by our driveway as they head toward the warehouses. The edible beans are drying down, waiting for the harvester to shell the pods. We are starting to nd corn stalks to burn down to check moisture content. Corn silage chopping will start in the next few days. That means we need things quick to grab and tolerant timing. When the kids were younger, Knox blocks were one of their

In the heat of the harvest, I still enjoy a good old-fashioned meal of meat, potatoes and gravy. I just do not have the time. I found a recipe in Cook’s Country. It is called lazy cook’s pot roast. I am not thrilled with the name, but I like the recipe and the short cuts it contains to help me have a good hot meal on the table or in the tractor during a busy harvest season. What I like best about the recipe is that they developed their own dried onion soup mixture/seasoning. Save money and time down the road. Enjoy.

Knox block jigglers 4 packages of Knox gelatin 3 boxes of favorite Jell-O avor 4 cups boiling water Mix gelatin and Jell-O together in large mixing bowl with spout. Add boiling water. Stir for three minutes.

Pour into 9- by 13-inch pan. Put in refrigerator for a couple of hours until rm. Cut into blocks or use cookie cutters to make neat shapes to put a smile on someone’s face. The great thing about these treats is that they do not melt or get soft while they are in a lunch bag waiting for a free moment to eat while on the tractor or between classes.

Lazy cook’s pot roast from Cook’s Country 4-pound boneless beef chuck roast 2 onions, peeled and quartered 6 small red potatoes, scrubbed and quartered 4 carrots, peeled and cut into 1.5-inch pieces 2 bay leaves 2 Tbsp. soy sauce 1 package dried onion soup mix or rub mixture

Rub mix for dried onion soup 3 Tbsp. cornstarch 4 tsp. onion powder 2 tsp. light brown sugar 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. instant coffee 1 tsp. dried thyme 1/2 tsp. celery seed Mix in bowl. Can be made and stored in airtight container at room temperature for one month.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Pat roast dry with paper towels. Separate roast into two pieces along natural seam and trim fat to 1/4-inch thickness.

Tie kitchen twine around each roast at 1-inch intervals. Cross two sheets of heavy duty tin foil inside large roasting pan. Place onions, potatoes, carrots and bay leaves in center of foil and drizzle with soy sauce. Set roasts on top of vegetables. Rub roasts all over with soup mix. Fold opposite corners of foil toward each other and crimp edges tightly to seal. Transfer pan to oven and cook until meat is completely tender, about 4.5 hours. Remove roasts from foil pouch and place on carving board. Tent meat with foil and let rest 20 minutes. Discard onions and bay leaves. Using a slotted spoon, place carrots and potatoes on serving platter.

Strain contents of roasting pan into fat separator. Let liquid settle, then pour defatted pan juices into serving bowl.

Remove kitchen twine from roasts.

Slice roasts thinly against grain and transfer to platter with vegetables. Pour 1/2 cup pan juices over meat. Serve with remaining pan juices.

Top with half the cheese mixture then layer on half the spinach. Follow with half the grated mozzarella. Repeat the layers, ending with the mozzarella. Top with a sprinkling of parmesan cheese. Bake for 40 minutes or until bubbly.

2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1 1/2 cups small-curd cottage cheese 1 1/4 cups shredded Swiss cheese

In a large skillet, cook bacon and onion until bacon is crisp; drain. In a bowl, combine the remaining ingredients; stir into bacon mixture. Transfer to a greased 9x13-inch baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes, or until set and bubbly. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting.

Buttermilk cornbread 1/2 cup butter 2/3 cup white sugar 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk

1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease an 8 inch square pan. Melt butter in large skillet. Remove from heat and stir in sugar. Quickly add eggs and beat until well blended. Combine buttermilk with baking soda and stir into mixture in pan. Stir in cornmeal, flour, and salt until well blended and few lumps remain. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
