A dream becomes a reality Nielsen embarks on dairy farming career By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com

ELROY, Wis. – For as long as he can remember, all 19-year-old Garrett Nielsen ever wanted to be when he grew up was a dairy farmer. This summer, the 2019 graduate of Wonewoc-Union Center High School set out to make that dream become a reality. “My mom said ever since I was like 4 years old, I have always talked about being a farmer,” Nielsen said. “It’s all I have ever really wanted to do. I grew up around dairy farming. My grandpa was a dairy farmer, and he had nine siblings, and ve of them were dairy farmers, too.” Now Nielsen has joined their rank as a dairy farmer himself, milking 21 cows in a rented barn near Elroy, Wis. Nielsen originally planned to wait until next spring to begin milking cows, after completing the purchase of his uncle’s farm, which has a 70-cow barn on 100 acres. However, fate had in mind a slightly more accelerated plan. “A farmer up the road from where I work was selling his cows earlier this summer, and it was just too good of a deal to pass by,” Nielsen said. “I talked to him on Friday, and he had someone coming to look at the cows on Monday, so if I wanted them, I had to act fast.”

He quickly worked with a bank to procure a loan, found a barn nearby to rent until the purchase of his uncle’s farm is complete next spring, and on July 23 became the owner of 21 milking cows. While his current situation is not ideal, Nielsen makes it work. The rented barn is a 20-minute

drive from his home. Next spring, Nielsen plans to move his herd to his uncle’s farm and increase the herd size to about 50 cows with the heifers he had already purchased lling the remainder of the barn as they calve in. Eventually he would also like to purchase his

grandpa’s farm, which adjoins his uncle’s farm, to use as a heifer facility. “I never want to milk more than 80 or 90 cows,” Nielsen said. “I want to stay small. That is what I believe in.” Nielsen uses articial insemination Turn to NIELSEN | Page 4

in his herd, and wants to breed his herd to improve upon feet and legs. “They are a high-producing group, so I’m not too worried about production. Most of them are pretty nice uddered, but there are a couple that have bad legs, and I think that is an important place to focus,” Nielsen said. The herd he purchased included 13 registered Holsteins, and while having a registered herd is not necessarily part of his business plan, he plans to continue the registered bloodlines of those animals. He is also interested in adding Jerseys to his barn. He likes Jersey-Holstein cross cows and has been breeding his grade Holsteins to Jersey bulls. Nielsen’s herd was pastured this summer, something he plans to continue in the future. He also

supplements feed, and plans for the majority of the cows’ diet to be made up of corn silage and hay. His herd weathered the transition of moving to a new farm well, and after just over 60 days, he has a 50-pound average, with a goal to eventually reach 65 to 70 pounds per cow. “They handled the transition pretty well,” Nielsen said. “It was nice when I moved them, and then it got really hot right after. It was pretty rough at rst.” But Nielsen is determined to make his dream of dairy farming work. Growing up, Nielsen began creating the foundation for his future career, working on farms belonging to his grandpa and his uncles, as well as working for several area dairy farms. Along the way, he has learned many things that will prove to be valuable to him in his chosen profession.

“I used to help my grandpa, but he sold his dairy cows in 2012. I was only 12 years old so I couldn’t take over his farm,” Nielsen said. Nielsen spent his youth working to collect the building blocks to help him become a successful dairy farmer. He has purchased heifers, and has bought two tractors, a chopper and a couple of chopper boxes, as well as a hay rake and baler. Having the equipment has allowed him to do custom work for neighbors and previous employers, creating an additional source of income for his edgling enterprise. During that same time, Nielsen has worked at several different area farms, including one where he still works in addition to caring for his new herd. Nielsen feels fortunate to have a good base of mentors to turn to for advice, including family, friends, past employers and his FFA advisor. “I have been lucky to learn a lot from every farm I have worked on, everything from cows to eld work to mechanical work and even some about metals and fabrication,” Nielsen said. “I have a lot of good connections. I would not have known where to start without the advice everyone has given me.” Nielsen had an active FFA career in high school, and he credits that with giving him a lot of experiences, including dairy judging and learning leadership skills serving as an ofcer. He plans to be a supporter of youth as his own dairy career grows, and hopes to be able to host his high school’s Food For America day next fall at the farm he is purchasing from his uncle. “I want to be able to hire a high school kid someday, to give them the same experience I was fortunate enough to have,” Nielsen said. With the current economic situation in the dairy industry, many young would-be farmers might question the idea of starting a brandnew dairy farm, but Nielsen had no hesitation about pursuing his life-long goal. “I try to block out the negativity. I know I can make it, I just have to make good decisions,” Nielsen said. “I’ll do whatever it takes to succeed. I love being on the farm, working with the animals every day and being my own boss.”

Dairy Girl Network to host three events at World Dairy Expo The Dairy Girl Network (DGN), an organization supporting all women in dairy by enhancing lives and creating opportunities, announces three events taking place during this year’s World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis. Once again, DGN will be hosting its annual Connect Networking Event on Wednesday evening. Join us on October 2 from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Sheraton Madison Hotel, right across the street from the Expo grounds. This annual networking session offers a welcoming environment with great conversations and connections for dairywomen in town for Expo. Come to learn about the fastgrowing Dairy Girl Network and make some life-long connections. A light dinner will be provided during the networking event. DGN’s latter event of the week, Sharing Wisdom, will be taking place on Friday, Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Sharing Wisdom Educational Session titled “Recovering from a Downturn” will be hosted in Mendota 3, Exhibition Hall, Alliant Energy Center. Join our expert panel of industry professionals and dairy leaders as we navigate ways and stretch your thought process to build a road to recovery. The dairy industry has experienced an unprecedented downturn in key areas including nancial, behavioral and on-farm inputs. Our diverse panel will discuss and emphasize new ideas on how to emerge from challenging times and reset your course. With forward thinking they will share a combination of real-life perspectives and expert sentiments. During the session, you can also look forward to hearing DGN Founder and President Laura Daniels with a welcome and discussion and DGN updates will close the session. What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in both 4-H and FFA. I serve as the president in both of those organizations. I also participate in dairy judging, dairy quiz bowl and showing dairy cattle in both. I am also on our country’s PDC, and I am a junior fair board member. I help plan for shows and get younger members involved.

Why are you involved in these activities and what’s your favorite? Being involved in these activities has had a positive impact on my life. They have helped me gain knowledge about the industry, develop leadership skills and make lifelong friends. Showing dairy cattle is my favorite thing to do. I enjoy working with my animals, and growing and developing them into the best they can be. I get a sense of control and empowerment when walking in the ring. The connections I make with an animal I am showing is priceless. These people, lessons and cattle make the journey of working with dairy cattle worth it. Tell us your best experience during your time with these activities. Recently my FFA dairy judging team had the opportunity to participate in the All American Youth Dairy Judging Contest in Harrisburg, Pa. We were invited after placing second in our state FFA dairy judging contest last April. Over the summer we had many practices to help us prepare. It was the biggest contest my team has ever participated in and we were in for a big surprise at the awards banquet. My team placed rst in oral reasons and rst overall, and I placed rst overall in oral reasons and rst individually. The team work and preparation we put into our judging paid off. I am thankful to be a part of such a dedicated team. These memories and friends will last a lifetime. What’s your favorite social media and why? I enjoy Instagram. I think it is a great place for people who are not involved in the agricultural world to get connected. There are many pages that positively represent farmers and what they do on a day-to-day basis. These pages are run by farmers themselves. It is like an inside look into their facilities and the animals in them. These agvocate pages do a great job explaining the concerns of consumers, sharing factual information and creating a positive image. I hope to start my own page about dairy farms in

my area. I hope to help contribute to the future of this industry. What are your career aspirations? After high school, I hope to attend South Dakota State University to pursue a degree in milk marketing with a minor in ag communications. After school, I hope to work alongside dairy farmers planning and educating for a brighter future in the dairy industry. What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities? The biggest thing I have gained from being involved in all these activities is my leadership skills. Showing cattle has given me a sense of responsibility and time management. Taking care of an animal is one of the greatest ways to obtain many important life lessons. Dairy judging has given me a sense of condence and has strengthened my public speaking skills. These organizations and activities have helped shape me into the person I am today. Who do you look up to and why? In this industry I have had the opportunity to meet many amazing people who have taught me valuable lessons; but there is one person who never fails to amaze time and time again. The person I look up to most in life is my dad. He is always trying to spread as much positivity in our house and around the farm as he can. In the last few years with the drop of milk prices, our small family dairy farm started to struggle. My parents made the choice to both get jobs off the farm, as well as continue milking cows. For the last two years it has been a full family effort to do chores while my dad is at work during night chores. I look up to my dad. He’s up at the crack of dawn to do chores before leaving for work and often times is not home until late at night. My dad does not let the tough times win. He works for what he believes in while supporting us. It’s been tough not getting to milk with him during the week, but when he’s home on weekends it makes the time in the barn that much more special. Tell us something about yourself that not many people know. A few summers ago I got the opportunity to help our local DHIA milk tester with some larger dairy farms. I love going to different dairies all over the county to take milk weights, read cow numbers and interact

Wingert is a senior at Fillmore Central High School. with other dairy farmers. Tell us some of your duties on the farm. I do most of the milking, administer shots, keep track of heats, pick out breeding bulls, feed heifers and take care of my show heifer string. Milking is my favorite job to do on the farm. I like to follow the progress each cow is making as she progresses through her lactation. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? I would change the way consumers perceive the dairy industry. Many people don’t have the opportunity to grow up around agriculture or to be taught about it in school. I feel more public education is important for consumers. Have kids take eld trips to local facilities. Have local farmers come in and talk to classrooms. Make sure farmers are always displaying a friendly environment for their livestock, sharing through more social media, and going to larger cities’ grocery stores to share where product comes from. We need to take the next step and inform on a larger scale.

This is a very young herd w/the majority of the cows being in their 1st or 2nd lactation w/many productive years ahead of them. Only the very best in A-I sires have been used w/daughters of Armani, Jedi, Atwood, Pety, Montross, King Royal, Modesty, and Pat Red selling. Current bulk tank receipts show a 65 lb. average w/3.9 BF, and an SCC in the 100-200,000 range. The Larson’s have never pushed their cows for production, however, several recently fresh cows will be milking from 80 to over 100 lbs. per day. These are the type of young cows that will easily rise to the level of production of any herd they are taken. This herd is housed in a tie-stall barn and are left out daily for exercise.
