Ventilation for freestall barns

Dougherty presents options for moving air in, out of dairy buildings

CALMAR, Iowa – Dairy producers and industry professionals gathered Aug. 27 for the “Choosing Your Design” workshop in Calmar, Iowa.

One of the four seminars included “Ventilation Options for Freestall Barns,” presented by Brian Dougherty, ag engineering eld specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

Dougherty rst described ventilation as providing fresh air into a building space.

“We want to get all the stale air out of the barn,” he said. “The only way to do that is by bringing fresh air in.”

Ventilation helps get rid of moisture heat, noxious gases and airborne pathogens.

“You see a lot of these fans hanging from the ceiling in barns. Those aren’t truly ventilation fans. Those are circulation fans.

They’re just moving air around that’s already in the barn,” he said.

While circulation fans can help make a barn comfortable, ventilation is needed to take heat out of the air. A cow producing 120 pounds of milk per day also produces over 16,000 British thermal units each day.

“Picture a barn in your head with 500 cows in it and 500 heaters running,” Dougherty said. “That’s essentially what these modern high-producing cows are doing. They put out a lot of heat, and we have to get it out in the summer time.”

Dougherty said the general philosophy for ventilation design is to keep the cow lying down as much as possible. A cow’s body temperature rises about 1 degree (Fahrenheit) per hour while lying down while it sheds one-half of a degree per hour while standing.

“In hot conditions, she’s only going

to be able to stay lying down for so long,” Dougherty said. “In the winter time we want just enough air movement to get rid of the moisture and the noxious gases so we don’t have air quality issues. It can be a tricky balance.”

Design recommendations include having four to eight air changes per hour during the winter. In the summer, it should be between 40-60 ACH. It will be around 40 ACH for tunnel ventilated barns and 50 or higher for cross-ventilated barns. A good target is also 1,500 cubic feet per minute per adult cow. For inlet speed, the recommendation is about 500 feet per minute.

“That’s enough air speed that you get good air mixing when it comes through the barn,” Dougherty said.

Most studies show that minimum cooling air speed should be about 200 feet per minute or 2.23 miles per hour, Dougherty said.

There are several ways to ventilate a barn. The rst is through a naturally ventilated barn. In this type of design, there are open curtains, open ridges and open eaves with a 4:12 roof pitch or greater. Dougherty said ideally these barns should be oriented east to west and be free of wind shadows, or anything that would block wind from entering the barn.

A drawback to naturally ventilated barns is that sometimes the wind does not blow during the summer. A winter drawback is there are times when it is colder inside the barn than outside the barn. Overall, there is 20-25% of the time it does not work very well, Dougherty said.

“It’s one of the reasons to consider a mechanically ventilated barn,” Dougherty said.

A mechanically ventilated barn does not have to be facing a certain direction, reduces ies and birds, and gives the farmer more control over the barn environment.

“The taller your barns are, the longer they are creates a bigger wind shadow and the farther apart the next barn needs to be placed if you want to alleviate that,” Dougherty said.

There are two ways to mechanically ventilate a barn. A positive pressure system is where fans force air into a barn and air escapes through openings or is drawn out with exhaust fans.

“This isn’t very common with dairy barns,” Dougherty said.

Negative pressure is when fans suck air out, creating a negative pressure inside which draws fresh air through curtains or other inlets.

Hybrid ventilation, which uses both natural and mechanical ventilation, is an option, but one that Dougherty said is not too common.

Positive pressure tube systems are a way to bring in fresh air.

“If you have older barns, low ceiling, tight spaces, these are an option,” Dougherty said. “Typically in new construction, you wouldn’t do something like that.”

Many times, this type of ventilation is most effective in holding areas.

Tunnel ventilation creates a wind tunnel down the length of the barn while cross ventilation has fans on the side of the barn and brings air through from the other sidewall.

“In a tunnel ventilated barn, cows tend to act as a wind barrier. Air will hit their side, swirl around and move on,” Dougherty said.

“The nice thing about a cross-vent barn is your stalls are lined up with the direction of air movement so you get better air movement in between the cows.”

For tunnel ventilation barns, fans are typically located on the north and east end.

They are easy to retrot into 4-8 row barns, Dougherty said. They can still be naturally ventilated in the winter time. These barns will have 10 to 15-foot side walls with 0.5 to 2:12 roof pitch.

“Bafes in a tunnel vent barn tend to not do any good according to the research,” Dougherty said.

The biggest issues are that the air goes

over the top of the cows and does not get into the stall area.

“So you need fans or bafes to try to divert that air to where the cows are,” Dougherty said.

Wall obstructions at crossovers can be an issue and the barn cannot be much longer 500 feet.

A cross ventilated barn can be much wider than tunnel ventilated, Dougherty said. Evaporated cooling pads are an option on side and there is no natural ventilation option.

“Bafes are kind of a must in these barns to redirect air ow,” Dougherty said.

Research shows that bafes in cross ventilated barns should be perpendicular over the middle of head-to-head stalls, Dougherty said.

The barns can be 6-24 rows with multiple feed lanes, with 13 to 16-foot side walls and 0.5 to 1:12 roof pitch and a closed ridge.

Issues with the cross ventilated barns include air bypassing cows through the transfer lanes, and bafe placement and design need to be correct. If the barn gets too wide, it can impact air ow.

If using recirculation fans, it is recommended to have 48 to 55-inch fans placed every 24-30 feet over the stalls. It is also important for them to be angled down towards the stalls.

When it comes to building investment, a study in Wisconsin showed the 16-row cross ventilated barn comes in at the lowest capital cost per cow per year compared to natural, tunnel and hybrid barns. The hybrid barn was the most expensive while the natural and tunnel ventilated barns along with the 8-row cross ventilated barns were about the same price in the middle.

For operating costs, naturally ventilated barns with circulation fans every 48 feet came in at the lowest cost followed by the 16-row cross ventilated barn.

“The wide cross vent barn is the cheapest to build and cheapest to operate, and natural vent barns were pretty competitive, as well,” Dougherty said.

Cost sharing makes Holstein Association USA organic certication encourages the use of RFID ear tags more affordable USDA announced their implementation timeline tags for ofcial identication and must start using Minnesota organic farmers and processors can apply for a rebate of up to 75 percent of the cost of their organic certication through The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s (MDA) Organic Cost Share Program. Applications are now being accepted until October 31, 2019.

Organic certication is a third-party verication system. It assures consumers the organic products they buy are produced in accordance with federal organic regulations. Organic operations must follow National Organic Standards and are monitored through review of their records and on-site inspections at least once a year.

Funds for the cost share program come from a cooperative agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (USDA-FSA). Operations that received certication (or had ongoing certication) between October 1, 2018 and September 30, 2019 are eligible for reimbursement of up to 75 percent of certication-related expenses.

The maximum rebate available is $750 per category (crop, livestock, processing/handling, wild harvest). The MDA also offers a similar cost share program for transitioning to organic.

To qualify, applicants must be certied organic by a USDA-accredited certifying agency. The MDA has already mailed application packets to all certied organic operations in the state.

Any certied organic farmer or processor who did not receive a packet can obtain all the program details and necessary materials on the Organic Agriculture section of the MDA’s website or by contacting Cassie Dahl, Organic Agriculture Specialist, at 651-201-6134 or cassie.dahl@state.mn.us. To initiate the move away from metal tags, and toward RFID ear tags, USDA has announced an implementation timeline:

– January 1, 2021 – USDA will no longer approve vendor production of metal ear tags with the ofcial USDA shield. Accredited veterinarians and/or producers can no longer apply metal ear

– January 1, 2023 – RFID ear tags will be required for dairy cattle moving interstate. Animals previously tagged with metal ear tags will have to be retagged with RFID ear tags.

“Holstein Association USA encourages dairymen to consider adding or switching to RFID ear tags with their next inventory tag order,” says Darin Johnson, Holstein Association USA Dairy Identication Manager. “USDA has been providing free metal ear tags, so their implementation timeline has focused on the move away from them.

For our members that have been using visual 840 tags, those animals also will have to be retagged after January 1, 2023 to comply with USDA’s RFID requirement.”

Stress in farming

Farming and working in agriculture can be stressful.

There are numerous factors outside of our control, and with the state of the agricultural economy, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and even, at times, helpless. And, that’s okay.

It’s okay to not be okay. What’s important is that we recognize when we aren’t feeling like ourselves and are able to seek help if we need it. Sometimes, we may need to help others recognize that they aren’t at their best. Understanding and recognizing the behavioral and physical signs of stress can assist us.

Some of the behavioral signs of stress include: Worrying about things you didn’t before, Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, Poor concentration, confusion, or forget-

fulness, Uncertainty or trouble making decisions, Relationship problems, Feeling sad or anxious, Change in personality and irritability, Negative thinking, Wanting to withdraw from people or activities, and Increased smoking/drinking.

Some physical signs of stress include: Poor or disturbed sleep, Weight loss or gain, Changes in appetite, Stomach or gastrointestinal problems, Clenching or grinding teeth, Chest pain, and Poor hygiene.

So, what do you do when you recognize some of these signs? If you feel you’re experiencing immense stress yourself, you can reach out to a loved one, talk about how you’re feeling to your friends, clergy, or a medical provider, or reach out to a mental health professional. If you see these warning signs in someone else, you can help them by listening attentively and without judgement and trying to understand where they are coming from; sharing your concerns

about their behavior, mood, appearance, etc. and ask questions about the changes you observe; you can also encourage them to reach out to someone or tell a family member.

Farming organically before it was cool

Generations of Byoms raised to appreciate land, cows

ETTRICK, Wis. – The Byom brothers, Tim, Dan and Roger, of Ettrick, Wis., were raised by their father, Gerald, with a mindset of practicing conservation and organic farming methods long before being certied organic was a thing.

“Our dad was very conservation minded,” Dan said. “He was concerned about soil conservation and had contour strips and built several dams to help stop erosion. We all got those ideas in our head. I remember when I rst learned to plow; he would remind me every time not to go through the waterways. You can’t farm these hills without them.”

The Byoms each operate their own organic dairy herds, milking about 45 head of registered Holsteins each.

While the herds and farms are separate entities, the family does much of their crop work in cooperation with each other. Roger’s son, Seth, is in the process of taking over Dan’s dairy farm, purchasing Dan’s cattle and his share of the machinery about a year and a half ago. The three brothers make up the fourth generation of Byoms to operate the family homestead, and Seth is the fth generation to make a living on the farm.

All three of the farms adjoin each other. The farm Roger operates with his wife, Sue, is the original Byom home farm, and it was honored as a century farm for being in their family for 126 years. The farm Tim operates with his wife, Sheryl, has been honored as a sesquicentennial farm, having been in Sheryl’s family for 160 years. Dan’s farm, which he operated with his wife, Judy, is more newly acquired by the Byom family, but had been operated by another family for over 100 years prior to their purchase of it when he was in high school.

“We had kind of farmed that way for quite a while,” Tim said. “The main changes we had to make were to how we applied fertilizer.”

Dan concurred, noting that they had not sprayed their crops for at least 10 years prior to undertaking the process to become organically certied. He recalled when herbicide products rst came on the market, likening them to miracle products.

“It was like a miracle, you didn’t have to cultivate so much,” Dan said.

“Guys were so glad to see something to kill weeds back then. Now we have better machinery to help take care of weeds.”

The brothers began to think about

the chemicals being used in conventional farming practices and started to question if the benets outweighed the potential risks.

“Our dad passed away in 1974 at the age of 55 from cancer,” Dan said.

“That really drove the point home and got me started thinking, wondering if all the chemicals were good for us or for our soil.”

Roger brought up studies that show health concerns regarding chemical usage.

“I heard something the other day about a study around the Minneapolis area that took umbilical cord blood from newborns and tested it for glyphosate,” Roger said. “Out of 200 tested, there were only three that did not have glyphosate in their bloodstream. If that is true, that is really something concerning.”

Tim sees organic agriculture as a way to nurture and promote life and

growth.

“We farm organically because we believe it is a system that promotes life through healthy soil, crops and cattle,” he said. “This is achieved through a balance of fertility, nutrition and genetics. It takes time and patience, and there are only so many chances to get it right.

Our goal is to leave our farms better than when we started.”

When selecting sires to use in their herd, the Byoms take into consideration the traits that will be benecial for cows required to be on pasture for 120 days a year.

“Feet and legs are a focus. They need to be able to move around and walk,” Roger said. “Udders are also important.”

Tim is concerned the Holstein breed as a whole has lost a lot of strength.

Stronger cows are healthier cows. I’d rather have a cow that is 8 to 10 years old rather than one that is gone in a couple of lactations.”

Organic milk prices concern the brothers, as well as the increased input costs associated with organic dairy production.

“Prices have stabilized for the last year. We were on a quota for about six months,” Tim said. “That was interesting. You still have to make good business decisions and keep your debt and

All three herds aim for a goal of an average of 70 pounds of milk per cow, per day, guring that they need to maintain at least 60 pounds to stay protable.

However, none of the Byoms have their sights set on triple-digit herd averages.

“More people go broke trying to get a 100-pound herd average,” Seth said.

In an effort to positively affect prices, all three farms have put their support behind the Dairy Pricing As-

sociation, a grass-roots effort to help increase milk prices by affecting the commodity cheese price on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, by making a voluntary check-off donation to the organization.

“I think the consumers are looking for locally produced food that doesn’t travel across the country,” Dan said of the direction he sees the markets heading. “More and more they seem to want organically produced food.”

The Byoms are concerned about the changing face of agriculture and the dairy industry, not only in their community but across the country.

“I miss the little farms. We have a lot of neighbors that are still here, but those farms are not being farmed anymore,” Dan said. “I miss that community kind of thing, and I don’t think we’ll ever get it back. That is one reason we are glad Seth is at our place, to continue on that farm.”

Roger agreed.

“It’s like that everywhere. Here, it is just the three us and just over the hill is one other good little dairy farm,” Roger said. “That is all that is left, when there used to be at least 30 little dairy farms around us.”

The community is important to the Byom family.

“We denitely have roots here,” Dan said. “One of the most important things in our lives is our church, a couple of miles from here. It is 156 years old. We were all baptized there, conrmed there and we’ll all be buried there. We’ve all served on the church council. We’ve all been in the FFA at our high school. We are still involved with our local chapter, supporting it in different ways. We like to give back to the important things in our community.”

U.S. milk production remains above a year ago

U.S. milk production remains above a year ago but not by much. The Agriculture Department’s latest Milk Production report showed preliminary output at 18.28 billion pounds, up 0.2% from August 2018. Output in the top 24 states hit 17.4 billion pounds, up 0.4%. Revisions added 40 million pounds to the original July total, now put at 18.37 billion pounds, up 0.2% from July 2018.

August cow numbers in the 50 states totaled 9.32 million head, down 2,000 from July’s number which was revised higher by 10,000 cows, but is 71,000 below a year ago, and the lowest in three and a half years. Output per cow averaged 1,962 pounds, down 9 pounds from July but 19 pounds above a year ago.

California output was up 1.5%, thanks to a 35 pound gain per cow offsetting the 6,000 fewer cows milked. Wisconsin was down 0.5% on 7,000 fewer cows. Output per cow was unchanged from a year ago.

Virginia again showed the biggest decrease, down 11.4% on 9,000 fewer cows, followed by Illinois, down 7.9% on 7,000 fewer cows. Pennsylvania was down 6.0% on 34,000 fewer cows. Arizona was down 6.1%, on 13,000 fewer cows.

Idaho was up 2.9%, thanks to 15,000 more cows and a 10 pound gain per cow. New York was up 1.1%, on 5,000 more cows and a 5 pound gain. Minnesota was up 0.5% on a 25 pound gain per cow offsetting a loss of 4,000 cows.

Michigan was up 1.6% on a 25 pound gain per cow and 2,000 more cows. New Mexico was down 1.6%, on 5,000 fewer cows. Output per cow was unchanged. Oregon was up 2.8% on a 20 pound gain per cow and 2,000 more cows. Texas was up 4.6%, thanks to 25,000 more cows. Output per cow was unchanged.

Vermont was unchanged, thanks to a 15 pound gain per cow offsetting the loss of 1,000 cows. Florida was also unchanged, despite a loss of 4,000 cows.

Output per cow was up 50 pounds. Washington State was down 0.5% on 7,000 fewer cows. Output per cow was unchanged from a year ago.

Dairy farmers culled more cows in August than in July but the number was below a year ago. The Agriculture Department’s latest Livestock Slaughter report shows an estimated 266,600 head were slaughtered under federal inspection, up 9,800 head from July but 13,100 or 4.7% below a year ago. The eight month cull count climbed to 2.16 million head, up 72,800 or 3.5% from a year ago.

U.S. dairy product commercial disappearance in

July had some good news and some of the other, according HighGround Dairy’s (HGD) Lucas Fuess in the Sept. 23 “Dairy Radio Now” broadcast.

Total cheese disappearance continued above prior year levels for the sixth consecutive month and put year to date disappearance up 2.1%, setting a new record. And, for the rst time on record, more than 1 billion pounds of cheese has been absorbed domestically in each month so far this year, says HGD. Fuess adds that even cheese exports looked “adequate” despite the trade struggles.

Butter disappearance however remains disappointing, down 7.8%, which followed June’s 7.3% decline. That represented a loss of 23.1 million pounds in the two months versus a year ago, according to HGD. Fuess believes butter will seasonally tick higher but plenteous supplies will keep the price in check.

Domestic disappearance has driven total nonfat dry milk and skim milk powder demand higher in both June and July, says HGD, “overcoming steadily lower exports seen in each month so far this year.”

Dry whey disappearance was up for just the second time this year, following May’s climb. HGD adds that, while exports dropped to their lowest monthly volume of the year to date, domestic demand moved higher versus the prior year for the third consecutive month and for the fourth time this year. China’s African Swine Fever has greatly inuenced whey demand, says Fuess. A quick footnote; China waived its retaliatory tariff on U.S. permeate for feed on Sept.

The global dairy market looked a little more positive this week. Tuesday’s Global Dairy Trade auction (GDT) saw its weighted average of products offered end three consecutive declines. The average jumped 2.0%, following a 0.4% slip on September 3, 0.2% on August 20 and 2.6% on Aug. 6. Sellers brought 82.3 million pounds of product to the market, down from 87.5 million in the last event.

The gains were led by lactose, up 5.6%, after a 0.9% slippage on Sept. 3. Skim milk powder was next, up 3.4%, after it inched up 0.7% last time. Butter was up 2.7%, after holding steady last time. Whole milk powder was up 1.9%, after slipping 0.8 percent.

GDT Cheddar cheese equated to $1.7446 per pound, up almost a penny and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $2.05. GDT skim milk powder averaged $1.1791 per pound and compares to $1.1338 last time. Whole milk powder averaged $1.4210, up from $1.3952. CME Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at $1.0825 per pound.

Subsidized exports continue under the Cooperatives Working Together (CWT). Member cooperatives accepted 8 offers of export assistance this week on sales of 79,366 pounds of butter, 456,357 pounds of Cheddar cheese, 220,462 pounds of cream cheese, and 2.425 million pounds of whole milk powder. The product is going to Asia, the Middle East and South America from October through January.

Most mid-September dairy product prices plummeted, as traders awaited the August Cold Storage report. The 40-pound Cheddar blocks shot up to $2.2375 per pound Monday, highest CME price since October 22, 2014, but then plunged to $2.0450, and closed Friday at $2.05, down 15 1/2-cents on the week, after pole vaulting 20 3/4-cents the previous week, but is 41 1/2-cents above a year ago.

The 500-pound barrels hit $1.94 Monday but fell to $1.6550 Friday, down 26 1/2-cents on the week, 29 1/2-cents above a year ago, and a record 39 1/2-cents below the blocks. 17 cars of block were sold on the week and 21 of barrel.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski says “The CME spot market is in the throes of nding a sense of equilibrium.” “Bull market corrections are jarring and violent. They represent a rapid swing in both prices and sentiment. They can be terribly confusing. But they rarely, if ever, change the underlying supply/demand fundamentals.” He adds that the spot market “appears to have gotten ahead of the real-world conditions last week, spiking too high and forcing buyers to nd product elsewhere or cancel orders. And prices fall.

But this correction doesn’t change the broader underlying supply/demand fundamentals at play. Weak milk and cheese production, good domestic cheese demand and light inventories remain supportive for cheese prices over the next month, at least.”

Cheesemakers reported a little more variety regarding demand, according to Dairy Market News, but sales are steady. Some barrel producers suggest orders have slowed a bit. Spot milk markets were quiet though milk was on the tighter side in the region and ranged $1.00 over to $1.50 over Class. More milk was moving into the Southeast region where farm milk output is light.

Western block cheese availability is very tight and prices are higher than usual. Domestic buyers were reluctant to make purchases above their immediate needs as they believed the prices were inated. Overall, cheese production remains active with enough milk nding its way to the vats.

Mozzarella demand is improving due to increased pizza sales in the region. Barrel stocks are accessible because sales are not as strong as blocks. The gap between them has been on the minds of traders, wondering how that will be corrected. The strong value of the dollar is not helping export sales and DMN warned that “Low feed costs are likely to result in more milk production and subsequently more cheese output, which could impact the cheese market tone.”

Cash butter also had a rough week, falling to $2.1025 per pound Thursday, lowest price since February 16, 2018, but regained a penny and a quarter Friday to close at $2.1150, 10 3/4-cents lower on the week and 12 cents below a year ago. Only 7 sales Turn to MIELKE | Page 11

Cream is accessible, according to butter producers but they are keeping churning somewhat light to manage end-of-scal-year stocks. Contacts suggest cream cheese production is light, therefore cream has been easily attainable. Butter producers say demand has ebbed so trading is quiet throughout the region.

Western contacts suggest butter sales have slowed and buyers are not showing any signs of urgency to make purchases. Shoppers seem willing to wait to see if prices slip further. While market observers think end users have some of their butter needs covered for the next few months, they also expect a surge in activity for fall and winter holiday needs, according to DMN. U.S. milk fat prices remain at a premium to prices elsewhere in the world. Some processors feel that while demand has been able to support prices domestically, a few customers may seek imports. U.S. stocks are readily available and growing, according to some. Ice cream production has dropped off and butter makers want to control inventories but plentiful cream keeps moving to the churn.

Grade A nonfat dry milk marched to $1.0825 per pound by Friday, up 2 3/4-cents on the week and the highest since October 5, 2015, and 21 cents above a year ago. Only 2 cars were sold on the week.

Dry whey held all week at 39 3/4-cents per pound, 11 3/4-cents below a year ago, with 2 cars nding new homes on the week.

The Agriculture Department announced the October Federal order Class I base milk price at $17.84 per hundredweight, down a penny from September but $1.51 above October 2018, and the highest October Class I since 2014. The price equates to $1.53 per gallon, up from $1.40 a year ago. The 2019 Class I average stands at $16.64, up from $14.76 a year ago and $16.41 in 2017.

Dairy margins improved signicantly since August due primarily to surging milk prices as feed costs have held steady, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. The MW stated that a shortage of Cheddar blocks in the cash market caused prices to spike. “Cheddar barrel availability has not been nearly as tight given the industry’s demand for whey which has caused the block/barrel spread to widen to historical highs.”

Class III futures had approached $20 per cwt. in the October contract, the MW stated, however “While deferred contracts are not trading nearly as high, dairy margins through the rst half of 2020 are close to the 90th percentile of historical protability within the last decade.”

The MW warned; “There is concern that milk production will ramp up through next spring’s ush given the stronger indicated margins, and that is part of the reason for the signicant discount in forward contracts relative to spot values.”

“USDA released their September WASDE report which continued to suggest higher corn yields and larger production than what most analysts expected.

Corn yield was reduced from August to 168.2 bushels per acre compared to the average trade forecast of 166.7 with total production pegged at 13.799 billion bushels. This was down 102 million bushels from Au-

gust but above the average estimate of 13.614 billion.

Projected ending stocks of 2.19 billion bushels were close to last month but also higher than the average estimate of 1.965 billion.”

“By contrast, the soybean balance sheet was more bullish, with ending stocks of 640 million bushels down 115 million from last month and below the average forecast of 661 million. This was despite the fact that similar to corn, both soybean yield and production at 47.9 bushels per acre and 3.633 billion bushels were higher than pre-report expectations based on the average industry estimates,” the MW concluded. This week’s Crop Progress report shows 18% of the U.S. corn crop is rated mature, as of the week ending Sept. 15, down from 51% a year ago and 21% behind the ve year average. 55% was rated good to excellent, down from 68% a year ago.

95% of U.S. soybeans are setting pods, up from 92% the previous week, 5% behind a year ago, and 5% below the ve year average. 54% are rated good

to excellent, 13% behind a year ago. 41% of the cotton crop is rated good to excellent, up from 39% a year ago.

The USDA extended the deadline to September 27 for dairy producers to enroll in the Dairy Margin Coverage program for 2019. The deadline was September 20.

In a letter to Congressional leaders, former Secretaries John Block (Reagan), Mike Espy (Clinton), Dan Glickman (Clinton), Ann Veneman (W. Bush), Mike Johanns (W. Bush), Ed Shafer (W. Bush), and Tom Vilsack (Obama) underscored the importance of passing USMCA saying, “We need a strong and reliable trade deal with our top two customers for U.S. agriculture products. USMCA will provide certainty in the North American market for the U.S. farm sector and rural economy. We strongly support ratication of USMCA.”

HELPING GOOD MANAGERS MAKE BETTER TRADING DECISIONS After seeing CME spot cheddar block prices rally to $2.20, prices have retraced a portion of the move.

Industry guesses as to what is causing this price volatility include supply tightness, dairy product imbalances, and buyer resistance to higher prices.

The reality is demand growth is once again outpacing production growth globally. As dwindling stocks meet market incentives to encourage production, prices are going to see more volatility.

CME cheese spot markets traded briefly at values that would support $20 Class III. As this happened deferred prices remained steeply discounted. So although it provided some industry optimism, dairy producers were only offered values around $17/cwt for hedging deferred 2020 months.

As has been the case for the past several years, dairy product categories are struggling with imbalances between supply and demand. Milk proteins are tightening, while butter fat is more available. NFDM supply is disappearing internationally, while whey powders are struggling with tariff ’s and regional supply issues.

producer components is critical when deciding which tools to use to manage individual herd market exposure. Dairy producers don’t want to be seen as the corn farmer that hedged his crop with soybean futures.

The outcome would be disappointing and not work well.

Internationally there is a lot of moving parts impacting various sectors of the dairy complex.

This will likely not change soon as world production growth is being impacted by producer financial health, profitability, export challenges, weather, etc. This will create hedging opportunities, but also more trading risk as volatility picks up.

Grain markets are dealing with the final hurrah for the current U.S. growing season. Early harvest reports are not yet providing a solid indication of how the year will end. U.S. grain supplies will likely tighten from prior year, but it will take a bullish story in SA to turn U.S. markets substantially higher.

Le Feuvre family milks Jerseys on the Island of Jersey

LES AUGEREZ, JERSEY, CHANEL ISLANDS – Dairy farming on an island has its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Few know this better than Sarah Le Feuvre and her family, who milk 140 cows on their farm located in the west-central region of the island of Jersey.

The island of Jersey is where the breed of dairy cattle that bears its name originated.

It is located about 14 miles west of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France, and about 85 miles south of Great Britain. At 45 square miles, it is the largest of the Channel Is-

lands.

The Le Feuvre family’s dairy operation, which is called Elite Jerseys, has been in business for three generations.

“My husband’s father started Elite Jerseys in 1938,” Le Feuvre said. “We still have three cow families from that original herd.”

Le Feurve and her husband, John, operate their dairy with their son, John James.

John has slowed down over the past few years and has turned most of his duties over to John James. Le Feuvre is responsible for breeding and showing cattle.

“The island of Jersey has been closed to cattle imports since 1763,” Le Feuvre said.

“As a result, we don’t have to vaccinate. We have no tuberculosis or IBR or BVD. Our cattle have an enviable health status that is highly regarded whenever we export cows to the UK.” Jersey is located at 49 degrees north, which puts it at the same latitude as the border between the United States and Canada. But the surrounding ocean keeps the island’s climate temperate. The average daily high temperature on Jer-

sey ranges from 47 degrees in January to 68 degrees in August. Hard freezes are infrequent.

“We have constant sea breeze,” Le Feuvre said. “Even during the hottest summer months, we don’t need fans in our barns. We receive an average of 32 inches of rain per year, but it can get quite dry in the summertime.”

All of the cattle on Jersey are registered Jerseys. Every cow that is born on Jersey has to be named and recorded in the island’s herd book, which has been in use since 1866.

The Le Feuvres graze their cattle on lush, green pastures from March through November or December. During the colder months, their cows are fed in the barns and are offered a TMR that includes fodder beets. The cows are given access to the outdoors at all times but will head for the barn as soon as it starts to rain.

Their maize is chopped for silage and they also put up a good amount of grass silage.

Their cows are milked twice a day in a double-7 herringbone parlor. In addition to their family, the Le Feuvres have two full-time employees.

“Some of our elds are quite small so farming them is labor intensive,” Le Feuvre said. “We have elds that range in size from about an acre to 15 acres.

Because of its long farming history, the island is a patchwork of elds and hedges. We rent land from more than 20 landlords.”

Le Feuvre said cash rent for good Jersey cropland is £300 per acre, which works out to about $375 an acre. Farmland on Jersey sells for £20,000 per acre, or nearly $25,000. The Le Feuvres must compete for land with farmers who grow Jersey Royal potatoes, the island’s largest agricultural export. The Le Feuvres often purchase waste raw Jersey Royal potatoes that they blend into their TMR. The Le Feuvres sell their milk to Jersey Dairy, a farmer-owned cooperative which is the island’s sole milk processor. Jersey Dairy buys milk under a quota system that includes incentives for dairy farmers to calve year-round.

“Jersey Dairy supplies all of the island’s dairy needs and exports the excess,” Le Feuvre said. “The butter is especially prized because it’s a niche product that was made on Jersey from milk that came from Jersey cows. Most of our exports go to the UK, but we also have some very good customers in places like Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan.”

After all their quality bonuses are tallied, the Le Feuvres receive 45 pence per liter of milk. This works out to about $24.75 per hundredweight.

There are some big challenges that come with dairy farming on an island.

“We don’t have easy access to large supplies of feed like you have in America,” Le Feuvre said. “It would be cost prohibitive to ship in silage. Our expenses are very high because fertilizer and other inputs have to be imported.”

As in the United States, the trend on Jersey has been toward fewer and larger dairy operations.

“Years ago, there were as many as 1,000 dairy farms on Jersey with perhaps ve to 10 cows per farm,” Le Feuvre said. “Today, we only have 14 dairies, but they have many more cows on each farm. Over the past 30 years we have made an effort to buy cattle from herds that were being dispersed. Our goal has been to keep the Jersey bloodlines and heritage here on the island.”

Developing the best possible Jersey genetics has always been a passion for the Le Feuvre family.

“John was president of the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society from 1993 to 1998,” Le Feuvre said. “He rst traveled to the United States in 1965 and has been back there many times. He went to Australia for the rst time in 1974 to judge a Jersey show. He has served as a judge at innumerable Jersey shows and has been an internationally respected breeder for many years. His passion for Jersey cattle has taken him all around the world.”

Dairy farming on a Channel Island certainly has its share of problems.

It also comes with some profound rewards.

“Every day, I get to watch Jersey cows grazing peacefully on green pastures and feel the fresh sea breeze on my face,” Le Feuvre said. “It’s impossible to put a price on something like that.”

During herd check, two-year employee Louis Luna bedded the heifers.

After herd check, everyone dispersed for a short break. Kevin had to take his 7-month-old puppy, Geno, to the veterinarian in Hastings at the recommendation of Nelson. Geno’s nictitating membrane, also known as the third eyelid, had rolled out of place. The puppy had to be sedated for the veterinarian to correct it.

Although the day’s high humidity and no breeze made the Kieffers question whether they would get started with chopping corn on time, they were able to continue the schedule as planned.

The equipment rolled into the eld at noon.

The family had started the corn chopping process two days before, but had to take a break due to rain on Sept. 18.

“That’s the way it goes,” Kevin said. “We always have to be ready for changing plans.”

In prior years, the Kieffers had helped the Ottes, another area dairy farm family, with merging their hay each summer. This year, the two families decided to create a partnership when it comes to chopping hay and corn. They sat down at the beginning of the season and planned their corn planting dates in order to adequately time harvest.

They also planned equipment. While the Kieffers already owned a triple merger, they sold their chopper and windrower in order to buy a triple cutter. The Ottes kept their chopper. Each family owns a set of wagons.

“We haven’t combined that part yet, but we probably will in the future,” Kevin said. “It’s gone

really well and the Ottes are really easy to work with.”

One of the biggest benets of the partnership is how fast they are able to chop. Part of that is due to both families being able to provide enough labor for all the equipment. While Blake Otte ran the chopper, the Kieffers’ two neighbors drove wagons. Luna also drove a wagon until Tim was done milking second shift. Kevin and Eric Otte drove pack tractors. Bret Otte, who is also the Kieffers’ nutritionist from River Country Co-op, came to take samples and check on the process.

Since Blake’s monitor read 72% moisture for the rst eld, the team moved to another one, where the moisture was closer to 68%.

“That’s better,” he said. “We have a lot of acres to get done so we have to keep going.”

While the Kieffers have about 300 acres for corn silage, the Ottes have about 400 to chop.

Kevin said the corn silage harvest seemed to be good.

“Yields are average or above average,” he said.

They weren’t so fortunate with their alfalfa crop.

said. “There is not as much of it and it’s not as high in protein.”

In addition to corn and alfalfa, the Kieffers raise sweet corn followed by peas.

“There’s lots of canning crops around here,” Kevin said.

The corn silage had been stored in an earthen-based bunker until this year when they covered the ground with rock and lime.

“Hopefully that makes it better because we were in the mud and could only feed it in the cold winter months,” Kevin said. “It will be our biggest corn silage pile we’ve ever done.”

Also in the eld was the Kieffers’ custom manure haulers, Brandon Otto.

Kevin admits they had not planned to be hauling manure at this time, but the various amounts of rain that lled the pit made them change their plans.

“He’s making a little bit of a mess out there, but it’s better than the pit overowing,” Kevin said.

Once Otto is done hauling out about 500,000 gallons of manure, the Kieffers will get the rest out with a payloader.

“After the liquid comes out it, most of it is sand at the bottom,” Tim said.

Corn chopping consumed the rest of the afternoon and into the evening hours for the Keiffers and Ottes. By 9 p.m., the chopper stopped and by 9:30, the rest

of the crew was done, too.

“Us packers usually have to go a little bit longer,” Kevin said.

Although the 17-hour work day on Sept. 19 was tiresome, the Kieffers know it is all part of the harvest season.

“I’m just glad we’re making progress,” Kevin said.

The larger dairies in our neighborhood have started chopping silage, but they are grappling with muddy fields. We planted RAINFALL 110-day silage corn, TOTALS Last 2 so our corn won’t be ready for another 10 Weeks days or more. The tonnage per acre is expected to be down from last year. We are 4” mowing our ditches for heifer hay, which has to be done by Oct. Since April 14 1. We hope to take 20.8” our fourth cutting of alfalfa next week if it doesn’t rain.

Everything is three weeks behind.

We still have not started chopping, but with the forecast of rain next week (Oct. 1), we plan to chop about 40 acres of corn RAINFALL tomorrow (Sept. 26). We are TOTALS down to four or five days left Last 2 of inventory so we need feed.

Weeks We have been pleasantly surprised with the corn. It should be an average yield. But it is really testing our patience.

We cannot take it too early because then it will be too wet. The last time we tested, the corn silage had a moisture of 73%. We are guessing it is Since April 14 about 70%, which we are OK 42.3” with. With so much rain keeping us out of the fields, we have been able to get a few other projects done around the farm that would normally wait until after fall field work.

We started corn silage on the 17th. Some of the fields are soft so we take what we can get.

The moisture ranges RAINFALL from 55-65%. We have TOTALS Last 2 85 acres done and will Weeks probably chop 250. We are bagging it in 12- by 300-foot bags. When we finish silage, we 2.8” plan to haul manure.

Next week the soybean harvest will start Since April 14 around here. We seed25.7” ed 55 acres of rye last week Sept. 16 and it is 3-4 inches tall and already greened up.

A neighbor who farms on sand has his corn 4” done. The soybeans are starting to lose Since April 14 leaves and turn 26.2” yellow. Our pastures are staying green. We could use a little more heat.

We finished our hay last week; we had some great weather before all the rain.

The regrowth on fifth RAINFALL looks great going TOTALS into the winter. On Last 2 the whole, we made Weeks great hay this year and the tonnage was a lot better than last year, so I’m very 3” happy with the hay I have. People in the area are going hard Since April 14 21.6” at making corn silage when the weather permits. Our corn is a ways off and I always like to harvest after World Dairy Expo if I can.

We are kind of in a holding pattern and not doing much in terms of crops right now.

I’ve been working on RAINFALL TOTALS some fencing and Last 2 other odds-and-ends Weeks type projects. No one around here is doing much in the fields.

The only people 3.5” chopping are those that are out of feed.

Last week did help our Since April 14 corn, with the warm 23.3” weather. It is looking pretty good. I am still hoping to get some dry hay made off a field that will go into corn next year.

It has been fairly dry here the past two weeks, we’ve only had about3”an inch of rain and that RAINFALL was a while ago. We TOTALS finished chopping Last 2 corn yesterday Weeks (Sept. 23). The yield was pretty good, between 24-32 1” tons per acre and 180-230 bushel per acre, according to Since April 14 insurance. We are 31.5” hoping to start high moisture corn next weekend if it keeps drying down like it has been.

There has been a lot of rain around us that we’ve missed. We chopped RAINFALL corn all day yesterday TOTALS (9/24); that was the first Last 2 day. It’s a little green, but Week we are just about out of corn silage. We started on a rented farm that got planted first and it went better than I thought. The corn we spread urea on is still really green and won’t dry down. The corn in our area has a long way Since April 14 to go before any of it gets 35.1” combined. We’ve got some hay left to do, but we’re just waiting for the weather. I don’t want to take a chance that it will get rained on. The beans are starting to shape up and should be ready in a couple of weeks if we get some good weather.

600 cows, 400 acres We are done chopping our corn silage. We started Sept. 14 and finished last Thursday (Sept. 19) and covered the pile on Friday.

We chopped 400 acres RAINFALL and did around 8,500 TOTALS tons. The corn ranged Last 2 anywhere from 62-73% Weeks moisture and we put it on a pile. We are doing some custom chopping now. When we finish, we have some sorghum on preventive plant acres we are going to chop. The Since April 14 soybeans are starting to 23.9” turn. We are seeding rye where we chopped corn; we are hoping to take that in the spring.

There is chopping going on, but not here. It’s been going hard for a week. We are planning to chop some of our later planted corn. RAINFALL Unfortunately, more TOTALS than half of the third Last 2 crop hay hasn’t been Weeks made because it’s too wet. The soybeans are dropping leaves. I figure in two weeks they will be ready. In central Iowa they are doing soybeans.

They say the bushels are below average. I think Since April 14 29” it will be 2-3 weeks yet before corn harvest will begin. It looks like this years harvest will be going up to Thanksgiving.

Barbecue Chicken Mac and Cheese 1 package (16 ounces) uncooked rotini pasta 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped 1 small red onion, halved and thinly sliced 8 Tbsp. butter, cubed 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 3 3/4 cups whole milk 2 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 3 drops liquid smoke, optional

8 oz. Wisconsin aged cheddar cheese, shredded (2 cups) 6 oz. Wisconsin smoked gouda cheese, shredded (1 1/2 cups) 2 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (4 ounces each), cooked and shredded 1/2 cup barbecue sauce 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper Sliced green onions, minced fresh cilantro and additional barbecue sauce

Active time: 50 minutes. Servings: 6 Cook pasta according to package directions; drain. Meanwhile, sauté the jalapeno and onion in butter in a Dutch over medium heat until tender. Reduce heat to medium-low. Whisk in flour until combined. Gradually whisk in milk, salt and liquid smoke if desired. Bring to a boil; cook and whisk for 2 minutes or until thickened. Reduce heat to low; gradually stir in cheddar and gouda until melted. Stir in pasta, chicken, barbecue sauce and cayenne pepper; heat through. Active time: 35 minutes. Servings: 4-6 Bring water to a boil in a small saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low; add bouillon, sun-dried tomatoes and balsamic vinegar. Cook and stir until bouillon is dissolved. Meanwhile, sauté onion and mushrooms in butter in a large, nonstick skillet over medium heat until just tender. Add garlic; cook and stir for 1 minute. Stir in the bouillon mixture, chicken and pasta. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat; simmer for 5-6 minutes or until liquid has reduced and mixture is thickened, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low. Add tomatoes, mozzarella and basil; heat through. Top with asiago.
