Indiana natives nd Minnesota dairy Shaums locate place to call home

SAUK CENTRE, Minn.

– Samuel Shaum moved to central Minnesota to fulll his dream of raising his family on a dairy farm. For three years, he has worked towards achieving that dream, and is now in the midst of living it.

“It’s all very nice,” said Joanna Shaum, Samuel’s wife.

“It’s the life we wanted for us – farming all together as a family.”

Over the course of the last year, Samuel, an Indiana native, has retrotted a tiestall barn into a swing-8 parlor and transformed a hay shed into a

90-stall freestall barn for an 85cow herd. He and his wife and three children – Delwyn, 5, Jalyn, 3, and Kyler, 21 months old – recently started their dairying career near Sauk Centre, Minn.

“I’m not a carpenter by trade, but I got it done [with help from family and friends] with very little setbacks,” said Samuel, whose previous profession was skilled mechanics.

The 26-year-old dairyman did not grow up on a dairy farm, but spent many hours as a boy helping on his uncle’s farm. It was there he developed the desire to milk cows.

“I’ve always wanted to farm, but have been busy working in mechanics,” Samuel said.

With help from his brother-in-law and nephew, Samuel Shaum built a swing-8 parlor in the front of the old Ɵestall barn.

In 2013, after spending much of their lives in Goshen, Ind., the Shaums moved to Minnesota for greater opportunity in the agricultural industry.

All the families from the Mennonite church welcomed the Shaums and helped them settle in the community.

“We wouldn’t have come up without other families being here,” Samuel said. “But also, we knew the opportunity to

farm was not in Indiana.”

With Indiana land prices averaging $15,000 per acre, nding a farm was nearly impossible for the young couple.

“It had really come to the point where I needed to build a shop or buy a place,” said Samuel about expanding his mechanic business.

After uprooting Samuel’s career, the Shaums ventured north to begin a new life. They

began their dairying career on John Zimmerman’s 170-cow dairy, near Sauk Centre, where Samuel became 20 percent owner and milked the cows morning and evening, and maintained equipment during the day.

said.

Nearly two years after the initial move, a dream was becoming reality for the Shaums.

In 2015, the Shaums’ current farm site was rumored for sale. A short time later Samuel called the owner and they visited.

“Really, I never thought twice about that conversation,” Samuel said.

Last August, the farmstead owner called Samuel, notifying him of the property sale.

“It was too good to be true.

The buildings were in good working condition and the house didn’t need any improvements,” Samuel said. “We did our homework and made a phone call to make things work.”

Joanna, who grew up on a dairy farm, agreed.

“We were really interested in it. Buying this place would allow us to milk cows again,”

she said.

With determination, and help from family in Indiana, the Shaums entered into an auction and purchased the 150-acre farm property on Oct. 17, 2015.

They closed at the end of the year.

“Honestly, we weren’t planning on getting it. We made a quick call back to Indiana to let our family know how everything went,” Samuel said. “You could say we were pretty happy and still are.”

Joanna agreed.

“This is so much of everything we wanted,” she said.

But it was not until May 26 when the family moved to their new home.

Throughout the winter months, Samuel made improvements to the farm site – building the parlor and freestall barn – and slowly left his partnership with Zimmerman.

Samuel Shaum built an addiƟonal 12 feet on to both ends of an old hay shed to convert it to a freestall barn.

Together with his brotherin-law and nephew, Samuel gutted the tiestall barn and installed fresh concrete, a new pipeline and built the swing parlor. Although operating as a swing-8, the parlor has enough space to be a swing-12 in the future.

“I would work on Saturdays,” Samuel said. “We did as much as we could with the ground frozen.”

By February, the trio started construction on the parlor, and by June began building the freestall barn.

Samuel added an additional 12 feet on both ends of the hay shed to create a 90-stall freestall barn that stands 136 by 50 feet.

“We’ve made it easy to milk and it has what it takes to get and keep going,” Samuel said. “I’m really tickled with

how it all turned out.”

In July, the family began milking a group of springing heifers.

“We had the parlor ready before the freestall was completed,” Samuel said. “At one point, we were milking one cow in the parlor.”

For the time being, Samuel fed the calf the cow’s milk. But in mid August, the Shaums were milking six cows and collecting more milk than what was needed for the calves.

“I made a whole lot of cheese during those days,” Joanna said, smiling.

One month ago, the Shaums sold their rst truckload of milk.

“That is another milestone,” Samuel said, “getting that milk check.”

In the days that have followed, the Shaum family increased their milking herd to 85 cows. They are housing their dry cows on site, with the heifers being raised at Samuel’s brother-in-law’s farm.

“Being a mechanic, there were always customers and, really, they were my bosses. Now, I’m my own boss,” Samuel said.

“As long as I can keep the cows happy, we’re all happy.”

And the Shaums envision staying happy well into the future as they raise their three young boys on a dairy farm they can now call home.

“This is ours to take care of,” Samuel said. “We have to thank God, our Father, for letting us be stewards of His property.”

Americans waste an estimated 40 percent of the food they buy. In fact, the average person wastes an estimated 25 pounds of food every month, and dairy products are thrown out more than other foods, even produce. Learning kitchen tricks and strategies to store dairy products properly can help reduce food waste.

There are many ways to make a difference, including using dairy products correctly and being creative in the kitchen. Follow these tips to reduce food waste and make the most of dairy’s nutritional benets.

To toss could be a loss. Research conducted by Midwest Dairy Association found more than half of consumers don’t understand the meaning of “SellBy” or “Use-By” dates on dairy products. These dates actually indicate peak quality, not safety. Hinsches host eld day on their Goodhue dairy

GOODHUE, Minn. – A group of dairy farmers – many of whom have certied organic farms or are looking to transition their farms to organic – recently gathered on Sept. 8 for a eld day sponsored by Organic Valley and the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES). The Hinsch family – Robert and Melanie along with their children, Nicole, 21, Isaiah, 19, Noah, 17, and Samuel, 15 – hosted the event on their 90-cow dairy near Goodhue, Minn.

The Hinsches are in the process of transitioning their dairy herd and a portion of their cropland to organic.

“What intrigued me most about the organic way is that generally the farms are smaller.

I like the hands-on approach to farming. I like all farms, but personally I like the variety [of chores] of a smaller farm,”

Robert Hinsch said about one of the reasons for his family’s switch to an alternative way of farming.

As long as they pass inspection, the Hinsches will be able to sell organic milk starting in June 2017.

“What we did notice is that it doesn’t take as much protein to produce milk as we thought. We haven’t seen a real fall in milk production, but we kept the same nutritionist. He sources the products for us and that has worked well for us,” Hinsch said.

Their biggest challenge so far has been on the crop end, Hinsch said.

“It’s hard to judge when you have a pasture. We mix our feed in the morning around 4:00. We have to guess what the weather’s going to be that day – are the cows going to go out that night or will it rain,” Hinsch said about guring out how much of a TMR to feed.

“This is all new to us,” Hinsch said. “We have a very heavy clay soil. We have to be careful not to let the cows out there [on pasture] when the ground is wet because the clay packs hard. The pastures grow very good because it’s clay soil. It does carry a lot of water and stays a little cooler, but the downside is that you don’t want the cattle out there if it’s muddy.”

Despite the challenges, the Hinsch family has had a lot of support. They’ve had a nutritionist, soil scientists and vets from their co-op give them tips about transitioning. There are also about eight to 10 other organic dairy farms in the Goodhue area that have all been willing to answer questions, Hinsch said.

Along with an overview of the Hinsches’ farm, three other

speakers gave presentations during the eld day: Harriet Behar on “Decoding the paperwork for organic certication,” James Schroepfer on “Successful management of organic crops,” and Dr. Paul Dettloff on “Herd health management.”

In her presentation, Behar, MOSES senior organic specialist, stressed record keeping in order to be in compliance for certication.

“And it (record keeping) makes you a better manager, too,” she said.

On organic farms, genetically engineered products, crops grown with sewage sludge and anything irradiate is not allowed. Neither are synthetic substances unless specically approved. Land must not have had prohibited substances applied to it for three years before harvesting a crop as certied organic. All elds must have distinct boundaries and buffer zones.

“Hold on to the dates you started the transition,” Behar said. “They’re important.”

Organic farmers must have complete farm maps, which farmers can get for free from the Farm Service Agency, Behar said.

Farmers are also required to complete the organic certication application, which covers practices, materials used, monitoring, recordkeeping, planting organic seed, and management and buffer zones.

“It can be daunting with 18 to 25 pages, but most questions are multiple choice … and it can be a good learning experience,” Behar said.

Livestock must have extensive records – from verifying its source and keeping track of health events to what type of feed they received and records verifying their sale.

Dairy animals must be fed and managed organically for one year before milk from that animal can be certied organic. Or a whole herd can be converted in one year.

“They (dairy animals) can’t go back and forth between organic and non-organic production,” Behar said. “During transition you might need to cull animals that don’t t the organic system.”

Animals that are transitioned to organic can never be sold as organic meat, but they can give birth to organic meat animals, Behar said.

Although articial insemination is allowed on organic dairies, breeding hormones are not.

Animals must not be given drugs, hormones for growth promotion, or synthetic parasiticides on a routine basis or to slaughter animals; however, if an

animal is sick and cannot be made well using organic methods, conventional medical treatment may be used.

“You know that an alive conventional animal is a lot more valuable than a dead organic one,” Behar said.

Once that animal has been administered nonorganic treatment medical, it must be clearly labeled and cannot be identied as organic.

Organic animals must receive no less than 30 percent of their dry matter intake from grazing through the grazing season.

“Pasture is a very important thing for ruminants in organic,” Behar said.

Behar said the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) oftentimes has incentive payments for improving pastures and is a great resource for g-

“They’ll help you plan out paddocks and how often you need to move them,” Behar said.

Bedding used for organic animals must be organic if it can be eaten, and sawdust must be from nontreated wood.

Manure that is spread on organic elds also cannot contain bedding that is not within organic standards.

Among livestock standards there are more rules for the crops and feed fed to dairy animals.

Certication inspection of a dairy farm takes approximately ve hours, Behar said.

“They are mandated by the government to come look at your farm,” Behar said. “They’re not there to nd fault with you, just to verify your certication.”

Grand-View BBBK Dreamer will be honored at World Dairy Expo Oct. 6 as the 2016 Wisconsin Cow of the Year. Dreamer is owned by Tim and KaƟe Busch of Cecil, Wis. Grand-View BBBK Dreamer, a 10-year-old Ayrshire bred and developed by Grand-View Ayrshires of Cecil, Wis., has been named the 2016 Wisconsin Cow of the Year. Dreamer will be recognized with this honor during the International Ayrshire Show at this year’s World Dairy Expo.

Each year, the Wisconsin Purebred Cattle Association selects a cow to represent her breed as the Cow of the Year at World Dairy Expo. The honor is rotated annually between the seven major dairy breeds.

Grand-View Ayrshires, owned by Tim and Katie Busch, is recognized internationally as a top Ayrshire breeder. Dreamer’s sire is Blackadder BB Kellogg and her Dam is Grand-View Cornelius Drama EX 91.

This family has produced a string of nine Excellent scored generations, one of only two families in the breed to obtain this distinction, according to breed representatives.

Classiers have consistently noted Dreamer’s superiority in the breed, scoring her as Excellent four times. In 2015, Dreamer achieved the maximum score of 94. As a heifer, she was named Honorable Mention All-American Fall Yearling, and at age three, she won the Futurity winner at World Dairy Expo. More recently, she was nominated All-American Aged Cow. In addition to the merit Dreamer has shown in her own right, she has produced daughters that are building an incredible legacy. Dreamer has 14 classied daughters to date, six EX, seven VG, and one GP-84.

Three of those daughters are at the maximum score for their age, and two, Diamond and Dea, followed in their mother’s footsteps as Futurity winners at World Dairy Expo.

Diamond has also been recognized as Honorable Mention All-American Spring Yearling and Reserve All-American Junior 3 Year Old. Honorable Mention Intermediate

Champion at World Dairy Expo is another award for Diamond. This Dreamer daughter made history by becoming the rst cow in the breed to be 9th generation Excellent.

Dea, another all-star daughter of Dreamer, was Honorable Mention All-American as a Spring Yearling. As a Junior 2 Year Old, Dea was Reserve All-American. She was Grand Champion at Wisconsin State show, 1st place at World Dairy Expo, and went on to become All-American as a Junior 3 Year Old. Another daughter, Dells, also has excelled, earning Reserve Grand Champion honors at the Ohio Spring Show, and Grand Champion honors at both the Wisconsin State Show and the Maryland State Fair.

At the 2015 World Dairy Expo, she was the second place Senior 2 Year Old. “Diamond, Dea, and Dells represent the show ring dominance that is typical for Dreamer and her family,” said Richard Franta, Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders’ Association board member. “Certainly, it can be expected that many more Dreamer daughters will be stars in the show ring. The Nuhn Lagoon Crawler is an amphibious vehicle designed for agitating lagoons.

2017 production forecast up 1.8 percent

The Agriculture Department raised its 2016 milk production forecast from last month in its latest World Agricultural Supply and demand Estimates (WASDE) report “as the cow inventory appears to have steadied in the face of expected improvements in returns.” The 2017 forecast was also raised “to reect slightly more rapid growth in milk per cow.”

2016 production and marketings were projected at 212.2 and 211.3 billion pounds respectively, up 100 million pounds from last month on production and up 200 million pounds on marketings. If realized, 2016 production would be up 3.6 billion pounds or 1.7 percent from 2015.

2017 production and marketings were projected at 216.1 and 215.1 billion pounds respectively, up 300 million pounds on production and 200 million pounds on marketings from last month. If realized, 2017 production would be up 3.9 billion pounds or 1.8 percent from 2016.

Fat basis exports were raised for 2016 and 2017.

Cheese and cream exports have remained rm in 2016 and strength in whole milk powder (WMP) exports is expected to carry into 2017, according to the WASDE. On a skimsolids basis, the export forecasts for 2016 and 2017 were raised on higher WMP and whey sales. Fat and skim-solids basis ending stocks for 2016 were forecast higher as butter and cheese stocks remain high and fat basis ending stocks were raised for 2017.

Cheese and butter prices were lowered for 2016 and 2017 “as supplies remain high,” but prices for nonfat dry milk (NDM) and whey were forecast higher “as the global supply tightens and demand strengthens.”

The Class III milk price forecast was lowered for 2016 and 2017 “as the expected reduction in the cheese price more than offsets the whey price increase.” Look for a 2016 Class III average of $14.75-$14.95 per cwt., down a nickel from last month’s report and compares to $15.80 in 2015 and $22.34 in 2014. The 2017 average is now projected at $14.95-$15.95 also down a nickel from a month ago.

The Class IV price was lowered for 2016 “as the lower expected butter price more than offsets the higher NDM price but was raised for 2017 as higher NDM prices more than offset the lower butter price forecast.” The Class IV is projected to average $13.65-$13.95 per cwt., down a dime from last month’s WASDE, and compares to the 2015 average of $14.35 and $22.09 in 2014. The 2017 Class IV projection is for a range of $13.80-$14.90 per cwt., up 20 cents from what was expected a month ago.

Meanwhile; dairy farmers won’t likely see increases in feed costs. The September 12 Daily Dairy Report (DDR) says “One of the warmest, wettest summers on record has nurtured the largest corn and soybean crops ever.”

Citing the latest Crop Production and WASDE reports, “USDA pegged the corn yield at 174.4 bushel per acre, slightly lower than last month’s estimate but 6 bushels larger than last year’s crop and 3.4 bushels higher than the 2014 record” “The agency lowered its estimates for 2015-16

corn exports and decreased projected feed demand in 2016-17. As a result, corn stocks at the end of 2016-17 are expected to reach 2.384 billion bushels.

That gure is smaller than USDA’s August estimate due to the slightly lower yield projection, but it remains the largest total since 1988.”

The soybean crop is expected to total 4.2 billion bushels, up 3 percent from USDA’s August forecast and 7 percent more than last year, the DDR stated.

Penn State’s James Dunn reports in his latest Dairy Outlook that “Corn and soybean meal prices are down 2.5 percent and 6.6 percent in the past month, and soybean prices are down 6.6 percent.

The U.S. corn and soybean crops will be records as Corn Belt weather has been almost ideal.”

“Exports of corn and beans are lagging estimates, undoubtedly reecting the strong dollar. Income over Feed Costs (IOFC), Penn State’s measure of income over feed costs, rose by 24 percent in August from its July value, as much higher milk prices combined with somewhat lower feed prices.”

“August’s income over feed cost is the highest since November 2014. Income over feed cost reects daily gross milk income less feed costs for an average cow producing 65 pounds of milk per day.”

“The allocation of the revenue per hundred pounds of milk or milk margin, is the estimated amount of the Pennsylvania all milk price that remains after the feed costs per hundredweight of milk production are paid. Like income over feed cost, this measure shows that the August PA milk margin was 24 percent higher than in July. For both measures the estimated price may be overly optimistic, but in any case the protability of dairy production in Pennsylvania is improving.”

“If the Pennsylvania drought hits farmers hard, which it will for some, then the feed cost using market prices will understate the impact as farmers spent money to produce feed and then must spend more money to replace crops lost to drought,” Dunn says.

Dairy product prices headed lower the week of September 12. Cheddar block cheese closed Friday morning at $1.65 per pound, down 6 cents on the week and 4 1/4-cents below a year ago. The barrels nished at $1.48, down 12 1/2-cents on the week, 6 1/4-cents below a year ago, and a much larger than normal 17 cents below the blocks. Fourteen cars of block were sold on the week at the CME and 45 of barrel.

Midwest cheese makers are seeing decent demand in retail and food service, reports Dairy Market News (DMN). “Most varieties of cheese are moving well. However, cheese with any irregularity or age is a lot harder to move. Manufacturers are running their facilities at or just below capacity. Some manufacturers are looking for additional loads of milk to round out cheese production. Spot loads of milk are a little harder to nd and cheese makers need to reach further out of the region to nd extra milk.

Although milk components are increasing, a few processors are fortifying cheese to improve yields,” DMN says.

“Western cheese makers report no problems nding milk,” according to DMN. “Manufacturers are seeking out a few extra spot loads of milk to ll up production runs. Cheese production is steady and facilities are running at or near full capacity. Marketers suggest inventories are a bit long for American and Italian cheeses but industry contacts feel these stocks will be drawn down in the next few months.

most cheese varieties” according to DMN. One cloud hovering over the rising global dairy market is the bankruptcy of Hanjin, the world’s seventh largest shipping company. Hanjin has stopped taking new cargo, affecting U.S. imports and exports of all kinds from coast to coast.

Add to that the Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) export program suffered a costly legal setback. The Daily Dairy Report’s Sarina Sharp writes that, “After ve years of litigation and commensurate legal fees, CWT could not stave off a consumer class action lawsuit.”

“The much touted success of the CWT’s herd retirement program raised consumer’s dairy product prices, in violation of antitrust and consumer protection statutes,” Sharp reports. “NMPF and member cooperatives Dairy Farmers of America, Land O’Lakes, Dairylea Cooperative and Agri-Mark agreed to a $52 million settlement.”

Cash butter saw its sixth consecutive week of decline, closing Friday at $2.00 per pound, down 3 1/4-cents on the week, lowest it has been since April 4, 2016, and 71 3/4-cents below a year ago when it shot up 15 1/4-cents, on its way toward peaking at $3.1350 per pound on September 25. Thirteen cars found new homes on the week at the CME. DMN says butter manufacturing is uneven throughout the Central region and churning activity is lower in a few processing plants as cream supplies uctuate. “Processors are expecting to increase butter production in order to meet the anticipated high demand for Fourth Quarter,” DMN says, “but demands from many retail channels and restaurants are strong.”

Western butter output is steady in advance of the fall butter season, according to DMN. “Butter is moving well through existing contracts and buyers are placing orders for their holiday butter needs and some contacts are starting to see a little seasonal uptick in retail butter sales. Processors are not having any difculty nding available cream. A few manufacturers report comfortable butter inventories and a willingness to sell off milkfat as opposed to churning. Butter inventories across the industry vary from long to committed.”

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 91 cents per pound, up a half- cent on the week and 1 1/4-cents above a year ago, with 12 cars exchanging hands on the week at the CME. Checking milk prices; California’s October Class I milk price is $17.77 per cwt. for the north and $18.04 for the south. Both are down 35 cents from September but are 40 cents above October 2015.

The northern Class I average for the year stands at $15.98, down from $17.62 at this time a year ago and $24.91 in 2014. The southern average now stands at $16.25, down from $17.90 a year ago and $25.18 in 2014. The October Federal order Class I base price is announced by USDA on September 21.

American cheese demand in July was down 0.8 percent from a year ago and down 4.4 percent from previous-month levels, according to USDA’s latest data. Total cheese use was up 0.5 percent from a year ago, but 3 percent below the previous month.

Year to date, American cheese use is 0.1 percent lower, and other than American cheese use is up 3.7 percent, which puts total cheese use, up 2.2 percent.

FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski wrote in his September 14 Insider Closing Bell that “On the surface these numbers do not read bullish, but the world market wasn’t off to the races in July either. On a monthto-month basis, commercial disappearance of butter decreased 10.5 percent, while nonfat dry milk use was down 12.5 percent. Kurzawski points out that “So far in 2016, nonfat dry milk use is down 10.2 percent, but butter use is 3.2 percent higher.”

In politics; Canada is in the doghouse. Dairy organizations in the U.S., Australia, the European Union, Mexico, and New Zealand have written their respective trade and agriculture ofcials, “expressing indignation about Canada’s recent actions to deepen its already prohibitive restrictions on dairy trade,” according to a joint press release from NMPF, the U.S. Dairy Export Council, and the International Dairy Foods Association.

“The groups said Canada’s increasingly protectionist policies violate international trade obliga-

tions, hold out the prospect of trade diversion with attendant global price-depressing impacts and are in conict with the principles of free markets and fair and transparent trade.”

The press release states that “The groups oppose a Canadian Agreement in Principle recently concluded between Canada’s dairy producers and processors. The agreement, which is undergoing nalization and review in Canada, would provide an incentive to substitute Canadian dairy ingredients for imported dairy ingredients and would unfairly subsidize exports of Canadian dairy products. If ratied, the agreement would take effect November 1, 2016.”

“The three U.S. organizations were joined by the Australian Dairy Industry Council, the European Dairy Association, the European Whey Products Association, the European Association of Dairy Trade, Mexico National Chamber of Industrial Milk, and the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand.

Each of the dairy organizations asked ofcials in

their respective countries to initiate a WTO dispute settlement proceeding to challenge the agreement once its details are announced.”

Lastly; the Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program announced that it is teaming up with Merck Animal Health to offer a series of informational webinars as part of the FARM Version 3.0 rollout.

“This webinar series will further build upon the strong partnership between the Merck Dairy Care365® Program and the FARM Program that was established last year,” a press release stated.

NMPF and Merck announced last summer that the two groups would “collaborate to help ensure a comprehensive, industry-wide approach to employee training and animal care in the dairy industry. Through the partnership, dairy producers across the country have access to the tools, resources and workshops available through the Merck Animal Health Dairy C.A.R.E. Initiative, which is nicely designed to complement FARM.”

German dry whey prices topped 50¢ per pound for the Àrst time since May 2015, according to Zentrale Milchmarkt Berichterstattung. ZMB reports that continued buying interest is supporting dry whey and whey derivative prices. U.S. dry whey prices have also improved in recent weeks, albeit not at the same rate as German whey prices. However, DMN indicates that there are transactions in both the West and Central regions at 40¢, but not enough of them to be included in the “mostly” ranges. Lower stocks are contributing to rising domestic dry whey prices.

Every penny change in the monthly average NDPSR dry whey price impacts the Class III price by 6¢ per hundredweight. As a result, if futures are correct, the rising dry whey price could enhance the whey value in Q4 2016 Class III prices by 36¢ per hundredweight compared with current whey prices.

Sept. 20 - U.S. Milk Continues to Flow Today was a report packed day starting with the results of the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction. The GDT price index rose 1.7%, marking the fourth consecutive increase.

All product prices moved higher except whole milk powder (WMP), which declined 0.2% on lower results for November 2016 and all of the 2017 delivery periods. Butter and anhydrous milkfat (AMF) had a good showing despite increased volumes available to the auction, up 30.6% and 3.7%, respectively, compared to earlier forecast amounts.

Although the GDT price index increased, on an equivalent 80% butterfat basis, it remains well below U.S. and European spot butter prices. This afternoon, USDA released U.S. milk production for August 2016 at 17.7 billion pounds, up 1.9% from the previous year. Idaho and Wisconsin expanded milk production, up 4.9% and 2.4%, respectively.

Several states are in the ranks of those hovering near unchanged for milk output, less than a 1% gain or loss relative to the prior year.

That said, improvements from states with expanding milk supplies were able to offset those with stagnant or declining output. In a slow, unfolding back-and-forth session, a buyer and seller exchanged nine loads of CME Cheddar barrels at $1.505/lb. Cheddar barrels traded an additional two loads with prices eventually settling at $1.5075, up 0.25¢ with two unÀlled bids left on the board. Cheddar blocks tacked on 1¢ to close at $1.5975/ lb. on an unÀlled bid.

U.S. dairy producers are milking more cows than they have in any month in nearly 20 years. In yesterday’s Milk Production report, USDA estimated the milk cow herd at 9.36 million head in August, up 45,000 head from a year ago. The agency revised its estimate of the July milking herd upward by 12,000 head and reported a further month-to-month increase of 16,000 head driven by a 12,000head jump in the Texas dairy herd. Dairy margins have been slim this year. Why have producers continued to expand? Floundering beef prices are largely to blame. Last week, lean beef prices averaged $2.07/lb., a 25% drop from a year ago, which reduces the value of dairy cull cows and bull calves. As heifer supplies continue to grow, U.S. milk output is likely to expand, and dairy cow values will probably decline. The lack of processing capacity could be the only factor to limit milk output in some of the fastest-growing regions.

The United States will need to improve exports to prevent dairy product stockpiles from growing even larger. Fortunately, output among other major dairy exporters is likely to recede in the near-term.

A small industry with large potential Chilean farmer adapts herds to country’s resources

PAILLACO, Los Ríos Region, Chile – Along the western border of South America lies a small region in the country of Chile that has a promising future in the world dairy market.

In a country three times the size of Minnesota, Chile’s dairy industry is composed of 126,000 dairy producers with 97 percent of them milking less than 300 cows, according to the National Consortium of Milk.

“Chile is a small country, and with respect to the dairy industry, it is smaller still,” Pablo

Coquelet said. “But we have a great advantage. We can produce at a low cost and our herds are healthy.”

Pablo, an agricultural engineer, has been dairy farming with his family for 25 years near Paillaco in Los Ríos Region, Chile – a rich agriculture region between the Coastal Mountain Range and Andes Mountains where 70 percent of the country’s milk is produced.

Since rst purchasing the farm in 1991, Pablo’s family business has grown into a reputable dairy in the South American country.

On two farm sites, ve miles apart, the Coquelets milk nearly 700 Jerseys using two types of milking facilities – a double-12 parlor for 400 cows and four robotic milking systems for the remaining 300 cows.

Experimenting outside of the common breeding strategy was a decision Pablo made to improve his dairy herd, giving himself a competitive advantage in Chile’s industry.

“I wanted a smaller, lighter animal to achieve better use of the pastures and produce at a lower cost,” Pablo said. “I also wanted to take advantage of the

With both herds, Pablo is expecting to produce 7.9 million pounds of milk this year with reputable values of fat and protein – 5.1 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively.

in the fall, during March to May, and then again in the winter, July to September.

Of the heifers born, all are raised on the dairy.

“Some heifers are kept for replacements and others are sold as replacements for other dairies in the area,” Pablo said.

Pablo is active in the daily routine of the farm to evaluate the dairy during difcult times and maintain those improvements during good times, further developing his herd and the country’s industry as a whole.

“We are free of many cattle diseases that exist in other parts of the world,” Pablo said. “This should make us more efcient in terms of reproduction and mortality, giving us a positive edge.”

Advantages are helpful, but do little when market prices around the world are suffering. Pablo has educated his three children about the dairy industry in hopes of preparing them for the unknowns of the future.

“I am worried about the stagnation that exists today that has led to the closure of many dairies,” Pablo said. “I want to leave my children with productive systems that are well developed so it will be easier for them to improve and grow, and also be able to incorporate new technologies with more information for them to make good decisions.”

To grow Chile’s dairy industry, Pablo envisions the need for clear governmental policies and for dairy producers to co-exist with those not involved in the industry, in addition to his generation helping the younger farmers become established.

“We have to exist successfully with our neighbors since the dairy can’t walk,” Pablo said. “To do this, we cannot be selfish. We have to demonstrate to the rest of the community how things are done. We need to share the good and bad experiences so that we can all learn and develop together.”

“Each member receives a pre-determined price, based on milk components, per kilo of milk and receives a share of the prots from the processor,” Pablo said.

To maximize his prots, he focuses on nutrition and herd health.

Of the 976 acres Pablo operates, 890 acres are in permanent pastures with the remaining used for supplementary crops such as corn silage, rapeseed forage and turnip greens.

Annual precipitation of 70 to 86 inches facilitates lush, green pastures, and allows Chilean dairies to be primarily pasture-based systems.

However, the last three years have brought less precipitation and warmer temperatures during the winter months at 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

“During the spring when grasses are growing, we harvest the extra grass in the form of silage to feed during the winter,” Pablo said.

In addition to the fresh pasture grass, the herd receives ryegrass silage in the winter and summer months, and corn silage throughout the year. Supplemental energy concentrates and mineral salts are given to cows 100 days in milk to maximize peak production.

Although pasture-based systems are often less labor intensive, Pablo diligently works to provide quality feed for his herd.

The soils in the region are highly concentrated with volcanic ash – containing organic material and xed phosphorus, and are acidic.

“In order to receive high production, I have to fertilize with phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and sulfur,” Pablo said.

“I also use nitrogen in a strategic manner.”

Ridgeville Holsteins moves cows from tiestall to freestall Sept. 15

NORWALK, Wis. – As the sun rose over Ridgeville Holsteins on Sept. 15, excitement oated in the air of the Wallerman family’s farm near Norwalk, Wis. For one nal time, Doug and Amanda Wallerman walked out to their 128-stall tiestall barn to begin morning chores. Less than a mile down the road, a 308-stall freestall barn sat empty, awaiting the Wallermans’ cows that

would soon ll its vacancy.

After two years of discussion and planning, Doug and Amanda were about to make their dreams a reality as they moved and expanded their herd into their recently purchased barn.

“There was a lot of anxiousness to get the cows there and make them happy and comfortable,” Amanda said.

Beginning in the fall of 2014, the couple started discussing their options. With the intention of building a new facility, the Wallermans began visiting area barns and piecing together a plan for construction.

Fate had a different plan.

“We were in the works of starting to build next spring; we were working with a company and had plans started,” Doug said. “This spring, our neighbor approached us about buying his farm and everything just fell into place.”

The 308-stall, naturally ventilated freestall barn with double-12 parallel parlor was the perfect match to the Wallermans’ needs. After months of nalizing their purchase and cleaning up the new location,

the Wallermans were ready for the move.

With over 20 people helping throughout the day, crews began showing up at 7 a.m. to start loading cows after morning milking. Carrol came out to the barn to make sure everything was in order.

“It is bittersweet,” Carrol said. “It’s a happy day for them, but sad for us to see the cows go.”

With milking complete and a clear path to the trailer identied, the Wallermans loaded up the rst group of cows shortly after 8 a.m. After a ride lasting only a few minutes, they were entering the freestall barn; their new home.

their herd to their new home while their hired man of 10 years, Michael Parr, directed the move at the old farm.

By 10 that morning, the tiestall was empty. The next step in the process was picking up and transporting 60 additional cows from a farm nearby. Family friend, Bryan Stremcha, helped the Wallermans organize the move and determined which cows to purchase.

Throughout the afternoon, cows continued to arrive as construction crews worked on areas of the farm. With a short

timespan from the date of purchase to moving in, Doug said a lot of long days have gone into the move.

“We only really had three weeks from the time we signed the papers and owned the farm to the day that we moved in.

To try to get the improvements and changes we needed to get done in the barn yet to prepare the cows in, we had to put in some big, long days,” Doug said.

Currently, crews are working on 63 stalls adjacent to the parlor that will be used for

post-fresh cows. Additionally, a machine shed is under renovation to be converted into a 53-stall pre-fresh barn with maternity pens and a vet room.

By 2 in the afternoon, all of the Doug and Amanda’s 175 cows had arrived. As the cows settled in, began eating and moving around the barn, Amanda said it was an emotional, prideful moment.

The nal hurdle of the day was completing the rst milking in the parlor. The double-12 parallel parlor with rapid exits was a completely new adventure for not only the Wallermans, but also the cows.

“All of the cows came from tiestalls; this is completely new to them,” Doug said.

The rst cows entered the parlor for evening milking at 5. In addition to Doug and Amanda, 11 family friends and employees helped sort and guide cows to complete the evening milking.

Doug and Amanda said they are gracious for the support they received throughout the day.

“I was expecting [the rst milking] to take way longer than it did,” Doug said. “We had a lot of friends that showed up and worked for us – even our employees who didn’t have to be there. Everyone was there to support us and make it all possible.”

As the last group of cows exited the parlor and the day came to a close at 9 that evening, a feeling of relief washed over Amanda, Doug and their crew.

With the rst of many milkings under their belt, they are excited for what the future holds.

“We are looking forward to watching the cows, hopefully, feel more comfortable and increase in production. We are very excited to see how the cows respond in this facility,” Doug said.

Amanda said the sense of pride

they have is indescribable.

“We were so tired at the end of the day, but yet, there was a sense of pride; it’s really ours,” Amanda said. “For the rst time, we are nding ourselves wanting to be at the farm more than our own house.”

The Wallermans would like to thank all the individuals who made their move possible and helped them in the process. They look forward to many years of carrying out their dream as they work towards lling their barn, expanding their herd to 400 cows and continuing to farm with their family.

We didn’t have room to put in separation lanes and we wanted a deep bed for cow comfort. After checking out our h separated solids. It was an economy of options we went with savings. “We started new construction in 2010 with bedding packs that we put in to save on costs and cow comfort, but it was a nightmare with high somatic cell counts. We were going through 4-5 big round bales of straw per day and had deductions from the milk plant. I tossed around sand and manure separators. The FAN separator won out on cost maintenance because the sand equipment was high expense on both the equipment and milking equipment. Based on projected straw costs of 90¢-$1.00 per day per cow, I could realize a 3-year payback on just bedding costs alone. It was a no brainer.

The vet said it would take about a year to bring my somatic cell count and that was pretty accurate. But, with my somatic cell counts dropping to a third of what I had with the bedding pack, this is big time savings. My hoof trimmer says my cows’ hooves are in better shape than even cows on sand bedding because he doesn’t see the wear down from the sand.”

Should I select low lignin alfalfa for 2017?

Livestock farmers usually focus on the task at hand, livestock production and crop production may be the management area they will rely on advice from an agronomist. Keeping up with new technology in forages may be something they read in an article, but they may not have investigated what are the basics of this new technology? Low lignin alfalfa is the buzz in the forage industry. Will this technology help improve a livestock producers bottom line?

First, what is low lignin? Low lignin alfalfa is a cultivar with genetics that will reduce lignin present in the plant cell wall and improves cell wall digestibility.

Currently there are three companies with breeding programs to produce low lignin alfalfa cultivars. HarvXtra has developed a transgenic cultivar that deactivates enzymes that synthesize lignin and contains about 12-15 percent less lignin. Hi-Gest is a cultivar developed through conventional plant breeding and contains about 7-10% less lignin. Pioneer has developed a cultivar containing about 5 percent less lignin.

The lignin reduction, mentioned above, is comparing low lignin to conventional alfalfa cultivars (Sheaffer & Undersander, 2015).

Second, how would this ď&#x192;&#x17E;t in my crop management? Low lignin alfalfa cultivars would allow a greater harvest window without a decrease in forage quality. Basically, if weather delays harvest or you desire to lengthen your harvest window, (change from a 30 day harvest to a 35 day harvest) forage quality would not change as quickly as a conventional alfalfa cultivar and result in a slight increase in forage yield during the season. Now this is important if you are feeding dairy cows, growing heifers, or ď&#x192;&#x17E;nishing cattle. If you require forage to maintain livestock (winter cow/ calf or dry cows and bred heifers) forage quality may not be as important.

Third, how would low lignin alfalfa work if I have grass in the forage mixture? Good question, ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst cutting would be of greatest concern, grass species tend to mature sooner than alfalfa and harvest will generally be timed to the grass rather than the alfalfa. Additional cuttings during the season grasses tend to stay vegetative and then the maturity of the alfalfa would determine the cutting timeline.

Fourth, what is the economic output to obtain low lignin alfalfa? Prices from a local supplier for low lignin alfalfa would be

in the $9.00 per pound range for the seed, while conventional alfalfa is in the $5.00 per pound range. Low lignin alfalfa does provide some economic advantages related to improved digestibility and HarvXtra offers a Roundup Ready option for weed control. The two other low lignin breeding programs may or may not have a Roundup Ready option.

In conclusion, as a livestock producer, what are the pros and cons of implementing this technology on my farm?

Pros: 1. Improved digestibility of alfalfa forage in dairy and ď&#x192;&#x17E;nishing diets.

2. Extending the harvest window while maintaining forage digestibility (harvest at ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst ď&#x192;&#x;ower instead of bud stage). This may be valuable if weather prevents timely harvest.

3. Depending where your farm is located, allows for a reduced cutting schedule (Ex. 4 cut to 3 cut system) while maintaining forage quality and improving yield (Scheaffer, Undersander, 2015).

4. Remember, reducing the number of cuts per season will reduce ď&#x192;&#x17E;eld trafď&#x192;&#x17E;c and harvest cost. May reduce compaction in the ď&#x192;&#x17E;eld.

5. Roundup Ready option for weed control. Check with your seed supplier when purchasing.

Cons: 1. Depending on the species of livestock you raise, low lignin may not be worth the investment if quality is not of concern.

2. Considered transgenic depending on the process and if a Roundup Ready crop.

Some producers may not want a transgenic cultivar.

3. When incorporating grass into the forage mixture may not allow weed control options and may limit options on the ď&#x192;&#x17E;rst cutting.

4. Price of seed may deter livestock producers from considering the technology.

Overall livestock producers now have more options to maintain forage quality in the ď&#x192;&#x17E;eld with the low lignin technology and provide improved digestion of plant cell wall components. Pumping on all cylinders again Massmann returns to the barn after open-heart surgery

OSAKIS, Minn. – After undergoing open-heart surgery on April 20, Bruce Massmann is once again pumping on all cylinders.

“I feel good now,” Massmann said. “I’m back 100 percent.”

For the past month, Massmann has been dairy farming full-time after recovering from the surgery that xed his closed aortic valve last spring. Massmann and his brother and sisterin-law, Bob and Roxanne, milk

“It feels good to be back,” Massmann said.

It all started last spring when Massmann came down with the u.

“I just couldn’t shake it,” he said. “I was running a fever and sweating all the time. I just wasn’t feeling worth a darn. I thought I had strep throat because my throat hurt so badly.

So I went to the doctor.”

While he was at the clinic on March 8, they listened to his lungs and ran a few tests, which all came back negative for strep

“I had a touch of bronchitis though,” he said.

Just to make sure their bases were covered, the doctors listened to his heart, too.

“It didn’t sound right to them,” Massmann said. “It was kind of a swooshing sound.”

Massmann was then scheduled for surgery on April 20.

“I was a bit nervous about it, but knew it had to be done,” Massmann said. “I didn’t want to prolong it. I could’ve blown that valve out and that would’ve been really bad. I wanted to get it done sooner.”

After being diagnosed, Massmann started to notice what the doctors were talking about.

“Once I realized what I had, I paid more attention to it,” Massmann said. “I could feel it.”

Knowing spring eldwork was around the corner, Massmann helped get as much done as he could on the 440 acres of owned and rented land before his surgery.

“I did part of it before I went in for surgery,” Massmann said. “I was able to get the small grains planted.

After that, it was up to the rest of my family to get it done.”

Prior to surgery, the surgeon went over the procedure he would undergo, including putting him on a machine to bypass the heart and lungs, deating his lungs and shutting down and cooling down his heart.

“It set me back a little bit,” Massmann said. “I

thought, ‘Oh man, I’ll be off the whole summer.’”

Finally, on April 20, Massmann underwent openheart surgery in St. Cloud, Minn., to repair the closed valve, which took nearly eight hours.

“It was a pretty major surgery, but xing the valve didn’t take that long,” Massmann said. “Switching me over to a machine and shutting down my heart and deating my lungs are what took the longest.”

After surgery, Massmann woke up around midnight.

“I couldn’t move much since the incision hurt pretty good,” Massmann said.

Massmann was able to get out of bed on his own and walk around the hospital a day after the surgery, and was released on April 22.

“It felt good to see everything – the cows, barn and equipment – again,” Massmann said.

But his weight lifting restrictions put a damper on his farming routine. Massmann was advised not to lift more than a gallon of milk for the rst six weeks and no more than 20 pounds for three months after.

work going on and I couldn’t help. It was different,” Massmann said. “But with a lot of support from parents, siblings, relatives, friends and neighbors, it helped recovery go a lot easier.”

During the rst few weeks at home, Massmann spent his time reading, putting a 500-piece puzzle together he got from his niece and assembling a model toy he received from his sister.

“I had a few things to do,” Massmann said. “I also went for as long of walks as I could handle around the farm.”

Although it was good to have a chance to rest, Massmann was wishing the circumstances were different.

“It was nice having a break from chores, but it wasn’t the break I wanted,” he said. “I would’ve rather have been doing something more fun.”

A month after his surgery, he attended 16 sessions of cardio therapy.

“I had to do some work on treadmills

and bikes with monitors on me to check how my heart was doing,” Massmann said. “It went pretty well. I slowly built myself back up.”

Since Massmann was unable to milk, feed and do eldwork while on the mend, Bob and Roxy, his nephews, Brandon and Justin, and his niece, Sam, managed the farm in his absence.

“They did a great job taking care of things,” Massmann said. “They stepped up to the plate. I had a lot of support from them.”

As the summer continued, Massmann started working around the farm, as he was able.

“I helped out lightly on the farm in the beginning of August,” Massmann said. “Then, I slowly started to lift different things, and if it didn’t hurt, I knew I could handle it. I was even helping unload straw and third crop hay in the middle of August. I was handling it just ne.

It didn’t bother me.”

He even noticed how different he felt post surgery.

“It doesn’t seem like my heart has to work as hard as it did before the surgery,” Massmann said. “I used to be able to feel it working. I can feel it when I really get working, but it’s a normal beat now. It’s not racing as hard as it was.”

Now, Massmann is back 100 percent.

“It’s good to be back again,” he said.

“I missed doing stuff all summer.”

“I’m probably lucky I got sick, otherwise it would’ve went unknown until something bad happened,” Massmann said. “I was able to get ahead of the game.”

But most of all Massmann is happy to be able to farm again with no restrictions.

“I’m looking forward to working with the fall harvest since I didn’t get to do much during the spring and summer,” he said. “It’ll be nice getting back to normal.”

Swiss Valley’s rst experience in exports came in 2008 with sales in Mexico and by 2012 export sales began to emerge as a signicant part of the company’s business, accounting for nearly 10% of the company’s sales in 2015. One of the company’s primary export products is cream cheese, which typically ends up in bakery goods and appetizers. Swiss Valley also exports a signicant amount of whey, which is used primarily in ice cream and yogurt drink applications. Both of these products are manufactured at the company’s largest facility in Luana, Iowa. Over the last ve years, export sales have grown by 422%. It is great strides like these that earned the company this honor.

Iowa dairy farm home to Heavenly Horses Hamletts’ work helps children deal with life’s challenges

STRAWBERRY POINT, Iowa – Cows and horses share Matt and Jana Hamletts’ farm near Strawberry Point, Iowa.

The 240 Holsteins provide a steady income, while the 30plus horses help youngsters

homeless due to situations such as a divorce or nancial difculties, Jana said.

One, a large Belgian cross named Kate, was rescued. Kate fears men, garden hoses and sticks of all kinds, Jana said. Now, the mare helps Jana provide therapeutic riding.

Many of the children enrolled in REINS and attending Camp EWALU have developmental disabilities, like high-functioning autism or Down syndrome. Being around the Hamletts’ horses helps the kids learn responsibility and gain self-condence, Jana said.

“A lot of them are scared to death the rst time they get up on a horse,” she said.

One girl with Down syndrome was scared of horses, Jana said.

“By the end of the weekend, she was riding Penny, our old ranch mare.

This year she brought her two sisters along to ride with her,” she said. “It was fantastic. She really got her condence up, and she was on a nice, big Quarter Horse, too.”

Some children Jana and Matt work with suffer from a lack of balance, making riding a horse challenging. Similarly, some of the youngsters can’t get onto a horse easily.

Growing up, Jana drove her Shetland pony at her grandparents’ farm near Marshalltown, Iowa. She began riding at the age of 4 on an uncle’s beef farm.

“I rode behind him on an old, foundered mare that couldn’t go fast,” Jana said. “But I thought I was hot stuff.”

Jana also learned to ride bareback.

Her parents feared their daughter might get hung up in a stirrup.

As a boy, Matt also had a pony.

These days, though, Jana is denitely the horse person in the family.

Matt is a third-generation dairy farmer and a graduate of Iowa State University. After college, he was a loan ofcer for a bank for ve years.

Jana is also an Iowa State Cyclone.

She has a degree in education.

The Hamletts moved to their present farm of just under 800 acres in 1986.

They started dairying with 75 cows, but now milk 200.

The farm employs a herdsman and two milkers who work in a double-10 parlor. Matt estimated per-cow production at 80 to 85 pounds a day, on twicea-day milking. He said butterfat test is 4.2 percent and the protein is at 3.2 percent. The somatic cell count (SCC) runs between 100,000 and 140,000, and has helped the Hamletts earn quality awards from Associated Milk Producers, Inc. (AMPI).

For a few years, Jana was horseless.

That was when the Hamletts’ daughters, Jaclyne and Jeanna, were young.

Jana said she had plenty to do, raising the girls and working on the dairy farm.

Horses came back into Jana’s life in 1989, when she bought one. Now she has around 30.

Matt, though, said his wife has way too many equines.

About one-third of the horses earn their oats by way of the Bible camp.

They are used in a pair of programs.

One is the junior ranch day program. It’s geared toward children in kindergarten through second grade.

This camp is offered for ve weeks during the summer.

The second offering is a regular ranch camp. This one is also available summers and runs from Friday night through Sunday. Both camps take place at Camp EWALU. Matt and Jana donate the use of the horses, plus Jana’s time. EWALU provides college students who work as wranglers. The wranglers accompany campers on trail rides and lead the youngsters’ horses to make sure there are no mishaps.

They also learn another important lesson.

“The horses are not pets. They’re livestock,” Jana said.

Since they are livestock – and working livestock, too – the children are told that it’s OK to give a horse a gentle nudge to get it moving. But they are taught it’s not OK to do anything harsh.

An important aspect of it all is that the children learn about life in reality.

“It’s not a video game,” Jana said. “They can’t put things on pause. We have to have that discussion, too. They can’t just drop the reins. They have to be responsible for the horses.”

Jana said the youngsters like the experience.

We chopped corn silage and finished on Sept. 13.

Moisture was perfect and the yield was fantastic. It was a good crop this year.

There are a couple guys who are starting to harvest soybeans. We are probably a week away from starting up ourselves. The forecast predicts 2 to 5 inches in the next few days, so we aren’t sure what the weather will do or how that will affect us. For the most part, everybody in the area has finished up chopping corn and is waiting to start with dry corn and soybeans.

We have been chopping corn during the last two weeks and have two bags left to fill. We will get done this week, but we’re expected to get a lot of rain. There’s a lot of mud out there so it will be a few days until we get out in the field again. Luckily we notill our land so it’s firmer and carries water better.

Everybody is chopping corn.

Soybeans are not doing as well in this area; one farmer I know lost a whole field to sudden death syndrome (SDS). The conditions have been right and SDS has killed entire fields. Thankfully ours are still looking good.

Yesterday (Sept. 19), guys starting picking corn and soybeans. I talked to the guy at the co-op and he said the moisture was 28 to 30 percent. I still have green on my corn so it will probably be early October for me. I have 80 acres of hay I’d like to make.

For the last week, I have been working on chopping corn. We are about halfway done, as we are working in between rains. It has been very wet – it seems like we would get a day of rain and then it would dry before we got even more rain. A lot of people are getting close to finishing up corn silage, but no one has really wrapped it up yet. I have filled two bags myself, and the rest is going to go into the silo. I am going to wait a bit to put it in, though, because it is still pretty high moisture around us. I will be doing that in another week and a half, I suppose.

We’ve been waiting for it to quit raining and dry off. Just about every four days we have been getting rain. We had five good days to cut hay, but it was down a week before we were able to bale it. Haymaking has been hard around here. We still have fourth crop hay to do. We’ve been chopping corn and filling silo bags. We are probably going to have a 230 to 240 bushel per acre average on what we are chopping; not entirely sure on what we are expecting for dry corn. The corn is drying down rapidly when we have warm days between rains. There should be good yield on dry corn – ears are very full. Everyone in this area has a good crop of corn.

Adding to the curriculum UW-Platteville offers new dairy science major

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Students at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville are back to the books for another school year. This year, however, students had the opportunity to enroll in a whole new major. For the rst time, students enrolled in the dairy science major, allowing them to develop a more specied skill set applicable to the dairy industry.

Dr. Tera Montgomery, associate professor and coordinator of UWPlatteville’s Animal Tera Montgomery Science program, UW-Platteville said while the major is new, dairy is no stranger to the university’s halls. “[Dairy science] is a transformation of what was our animal science major with a dairy emphasis,” Montgomery said. “We wanted to add some new things to the curriculum and turn it into a major so students could showcase what

they have been doing all along.”

Montgomery recognized students in the animal science major with an emphasis in dairy science sometimes got lost in the crowd. Underneath the animal science major, it was much harder to recognize which students were interested in dairy to guide them to the right opportunities. By adding the dairy science major, UW-Platteville Animal Science hoped to highlight students’ strengths and connect them with industry professionals earlier on.

Conversations regarding the major addition have taken place over the last four years. The planning process for adding the major began by meeting with faculty from other University of Wisconsin campuses to discuss framing the major.

“We talked about the strengths of each of our programs and how this addition would help all of our University’s programs. Building off of one another’s curriculums helps us not only to make a strong dairy industry in Wisconsin, but across our tri-state area,” Montgomery said.

The core classes offered in the dairy science emphasis under animal science are still a part of the new major’s curriculum. However, new, dairy specic course additions make the program more practical for what student’s will need in the industry.

The Dairy Challenge team allows students to practice consulting and making recommendations on farms, while dairy judging allows students to examine and judge type and production.

The University is also home to the Pioneer Dairy Club, which hosts an annual consignment sale to generate funds for the following year. Students are also able to work throughout college on Pioneer Farm, the University’s 150-cow dairy farm.

“We have a total of 330 animals from the youngest to the oldest. The farm has a current rolling herd average of 30,000, a recent goal of ours we achieved and continue to work to improve,” Montgomery said.

The farm grants students, particularly upperclassmen, an opportunity to experience a taste of home while they are in college. An upperclassman dormitory overlooks the farm, so students are able to stay on the farm while working and attending school in their nal years of college.

The rst students are expected to graduate with the dairy science major in December. Montgomery is excited for the new offering and what it means for current and future students.

“We are giving students a much richer, practical experience they need for the industry,” Montgomery said. “In class or on farm, it’s a great experience.

We have a lot of fun here.”

Then crumb in blender three remaining slices of toast; mix with butter and sprinkle on top. Bake for 60 to 65 minutes at 325 degrees. Let stand before serving.
