Celebrating four years of living her dream

Handel searches for ways to diversify dairy

BARNEVELD, Wis. – Bryanna Handel embarked on her farming career Sept.

7, 2014, armed with a herd of 16 cows. Despite the fact that nearly the entire four years have been plagued with depressed milk prices, she maintains she is happy milking cows and raising her family on a dairy farm.

Along with her husband, Dylan, Handel operates B. Kurt Dairy near the Iowa County town of Barneveld, Wis. B. Kurt Dairy is home to 65 milk cows, mostly Jerseys, with a few Holsteins and Brown Swiss. The herd has pasture access for about nine months of the year and is fed a TMR. The Handels milk their herd in a 67-stall tiestall barn.

Handel does the majority of the farm work while Dylan works off the farm, although he helps with the crop work on their 103-acre farm. The Handels have two young children: Elizabeth, 3, and Lyle, 1.

The couple is expecting their third child in November.

Handel grew up knowing that dairy farming was where her life’s passion laid, helping on her grandparent’s 350-cow dairy near Cottage Grove, Wis. When she turned 16, she started to invest in her future, buying cows with the paychecks she earned and housing them at her family’s farm.

She further laid the groundwork for a career in dairy farming following her high school graduation by attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course program during the winter of 2010-11, where she earned her certicate in dairy herd management.

A perfect attendance at World Dairy Expo

Mayer makes plans to attend 52nd straight year

CHILI, Wis. – When early October rolls around, Allan Mayer will climb in the car and make his annual pilgrimage to World Dairy Expo held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis. This year’s show will mark the 52nd one Mayer has visited, giving him a perfect attendance record.

“I was in high school when I went to the rst one,” Mayer said, remembering the ride to Madison with his classmates. “They didn’t have the FFA judging contest back then. The FFA just went down, took in what was there during the morning, and we ended the day playing football in the sand arena behind the barns with other FFA chapters.”

Despite the changes he has seen in both Expo and the dairy cattle industry over the past 52 years, Mayer continues to look forward to the show each year.

While attending the annual show used to be a family trip, these days Mayer attends a day during the week while his son takes Saturday to make the trip. Most times, Mayer scouts the barns and gives his son a list of cows to check out so they can share opinions. With his son and nephew, Mayer milks about 150 cows on his family’s Chili-View Dairy.

“There was one year I thought we were going to miss going [to Expo],” Mayer

said. “But at the last minute, things came together, and we hopped in the car and went.”

In the earliest years of Expo, Mayer said there was no entrance fee and there was not enough parking to accommodate visitors.

He said the commercial exhibitors were housed in tents, sometimes challenged by the weather.

“Back then, it seemed like most of the commercial exhibits were geared toward milking machines and what not,” Mayer said. “Today, it seems like there is a lot more big machinery brought to the grounds. I guess that makes sense, given the differences in herds today.”

When asked what his favorite part of attending Expo is, Mayer does not bat an eye before answering that the cows are the biggest attraction for him. Mayer is a connoisseur of breeding Holstein dairy cattle and has spent his life focusing on bettering the genetics and cows in his herd.

“The cows have changed so much over the years,” Mayer said. “We’re getting away from those great big woody-type cows and going with cows that are more rened and more dairy.”

Mayer appreciates the changes in not only the physical appearance of the cattle, but also in some of the management practices that have gone along the wayside.

“Back then, a lot of those cows didn’t calve in until they were almost 3 years old,” he

One of Mayer’s all-time favorites in the barns and in the showring was Continental Scarlet-Red. “Seeing Scarlet in person was maybe one of the biggest highlights for me over the years,” Mayer said.

“I remember Jack Stookey had a really nice display that basically fenced her off, helping keep people away.

She was probably as good of a cow as I’ve ever seen, especially for a Red and White cow back then.”

Another favorite cow of Mayer’s was the 1974 World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion Gene Acres Felicia May Fury.

“Felicia May was so balanced; I really admired her for that,” Mayer said.

“You didn’t realize how big she really was because of that extreme balance.”

Windrift Countess Nora, the rst supreme champion chosen at World Dairy Expo

in 1970, and a repeat winner in 1972, caught Mayer’s fancy in the early years of Expo.

“She was a big horse of a cow, and I’m sure she was older when she calved, but she was made pretty well,” Mayer said.

When thinking about the bulls that sired the winners, Mayer remembers what he considered to be the good and the bad, noting he many times felt if a bull was the sire of the winning heifers, he probably was not going to be the sire of Turn to MAYER | Page 4

“You have to give Goldwyn credit,” Mayer said of the bull. “He’s made as many good ones in the cow show as he did in the heifer show. The Ivanhoes from Pennsylvania were a pretty good group of cows back in the day, too. They were fairly balanced and not terribly woody for back then.”

Several farms have stood out in Mayer’s mind as having outstanding barn displays in addition to bringing good cows.

“Pinehurst Farms, from here in Wisconsin, were always contenders back in the day and had a nice display in the barn,” he said. “Other ones I remember being impressed with were Lylehaven, Dreamstreet and Carrousel Farms.”

Mayer also mentioned Jack Stookey and Allen Dairy.

Mayer said while a cow has to be good, she also needs to have the right tters in the barn preparing her in order for her to be successful in the showring.

“When I rst started going to Expo, people didn’t do toplines,” Mayer said. “Now, they are clipped so ne, and there is so much oil and shine used on their bodies and udders. They can get to the point of looking like grease balls.”

While Mayer has enjoyed the new barns built in 2014, he dislikes the idea of the Veterans Memorial Coliseum being replaced.

“The Coliseum is a landmark,” he said. “Not just for Expo, but for the city of Madison as well. It would be a shame to tear that down to replace it with something new.”

Free farm planning workshop for Lafayette County farmers Farmers and non-farming landowners in Southwest Wisconsin are invited to a workshop featuring all aspects of farm planning. “Whole farm planning is an ongoing process that starts with awareness of a major problem or opportunity on your farm. During the workshop, we’ll hear from local farmers and experts about how they use conservation programs to save money, increase production, and enhance the health of their land” says Robert Bauer, Grazing Specialist for Southwest Badger RC&D and organizer of the event.

The workshop is sponsored by the Pecatonica Pride Watershed Association, a collaboration of community groups, farmers, shers, landowners, and river lovers pulling together to improve and promote the Pecatonica River and its trout streams between Blanchardville and Argyle, Wisconsin. Funding for the workshop is provided by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, with support from Southwest Badger RC&D. Landowner Chele Isaac and Conservationist Landon Baumgartner discuss conservation planning options.

By using on-farm and commercial sources of fertilizer and applying them at the right rate, place, and time you can improve farm protability and reduce environmental risk. During the workshop, I’ll explain how to start or get more out of your nutrient management plan” says Dan Smith, Regional Specialist for the University of Wisconsin Nutrient and Pest Management Program.

Several local farmers will share their experiences of whole farm planning, including Jacob Marty on being a sixth generation livestock farmer. Other speakers will include Wisconsin State Grazing Specialist Brian Pillsbury on how to plan fence and water for pastured livestock. Sponsoring organizations from Lafayette County’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) will be on hand to discuss conservation programs during breaks.

The “Whole Farm Planning” workshop is scheduled for Oct. 9, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Town Bank, Community Room, 15815 State Rd 81, Darlington, Wis. Lunch will be served from 12:15-1 p.m. thanks to Wisconsin Farmers Union. Handel said. “The kids will typically sleep in a pack-and-play while I milk. Milking takes about an hour and a half, milking with six automatic takeoff units.â€?

the new baby arrives this winter, but she plans to continue with her daily routine as soon as possible, getting the newest future farmhand on schedule.

The Handels ultimate goal is for Dylan to be able to farm full time. As a way to help facilitate that goal, the Handels have looked into marketing cheese made from their own milk.

The decision was made to make cheese this fall for the upcoming holiday season and focus on marketing holiday gift boxes. They shipped their ďƒžrst load of milk to the Cedar Grove Cheese plant near Plain, Wis. The Handels plan to send about 4,000 pounds of their milk, yielding 400 pounds of cheddar cheese. Several local FFA chapters have agreed to market Handel’s cheese during their annual fundraisers. “Ideally, I’d like to know the cheese is all sold before it is actually made, but having the FFA chapters involved is a good start,â€? Handel said.

After her initial foray into cheesemaking, Handel said she has been somewhat surprised at the amount of paperwork, rules and regulations, and the number of inspections that need to be held for every aspect. “We’ll see how this ďƒžrst run goes,â€?

She takes care of other jobs needed during the day. “I didn’t take a lot of time off when I had Elizabeth and Lyle,� she said. “I think it worked better for us to establish and set our regular routine right away.

Having that regular routine is the only way I know I will be able to do everything I need to get done during a day.�

Handel said. “There would be a lot of time invested in attending farmers markets and working with retailers.â€?

Handel is not opposed to opening their farm to agri-tourism when her own children are older.

“I feel like our proximity to Madison (Wis.) would help us be successful in doing that,� Handel said. “But if I’m going to do it, I want to have the time to do it well.�

While Handel thinks there is no better way to raise her family than on a dairy farm, she is always conscious of the bottom line. She said she will continue to milk cows as long as she is not losing money.

A how-to: Manage heifers for replacements Atkins presents best practices in PDPW webinar

Raising quality replacement stock requires upfront costs without immediate returns. This is one of many complex issues dairy farmers must consider when raising youngstock. “ Y o u n g s t o c k management really comes down to heifer inventory and heifer management,” said Matt Atkins, a University of Wisconsin-Madison dairy management specialist.

Atkins presented, “Youngstock management: Heifers eating into your prots?” during a Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin’s World Class Webinar Sept. 5.

There are four goals dairy farmers should keep in mind when considering heifer inventory, according to Atkins.

Heifer’s should rst calve between 22-24 months; there should be minimum nutrition excretion with the help of a nutritionist; no reduction in

lactation performance, and controlled costs by rearing a sufcient number of high quality heifers.

On average, the cost to rear a heifer from birth to their rst calving is $1,800$2,200. Over half of the cost is feed. The remaining expenses include veterinary work, facilities and labor management.

The rst step in costeffective heifer management is to analyze the needs of the herd.

During the webinar, Atkins demonstrated how dairy farmers can interpret the demands of their farm using an online document found on the University of WisconsinMadison’s Department of Dairy Science website.

This heifer replacement tool takes into consideration cow herd size, cow culling rate, heifer rst calving date, calf and heifer culling rates and expansion goals.

There are tools available on the website that including projects and presentations available for download to the

public.

“I highly recommend looking at the website to see what tools you can use to help your specic operation,” Atkins said.

Replacement inventory is another crucial tool in maintaining a solid youngstock herd. If their are too many heifers on the farm, selling calves while they are young can mean more money for a dairy farmer.

“The earlier the better,” Atkins said on the timeliness of selling heifers. “The cost of raising heifers is high right now, and the selling cost is low, according to Wisconsin auctions and sale barns.”

Planning to cull can be a tricky decision. There is an opportunity in culling specic animals or cows.

“Look at cows with high somatic cell counts,” Atkins said. “That can be an indicator of problems later on. Also look at the health and reproduction status of the cow. The use of genomics or predicted transmitting ability data when sorting animals for culling is useful, too.”

Atkins also encouraged farmers to keep track of the health of the young animals.

“The incidence of disease,

like respiratory disease especially, is something to keep track of,” Atkins said.

“These things impact the production of the animal over time. It’s easier for an animal to recover from a gut issue like scours, where they can rebuild the tissue. When it

“This is going to minimize culling decisions on heifers you need to keep, increase the genetic value of heifers kept and the number of dairybeef crosses sold,” Atkins said. “The cost of breeding is higher with sexed semen, but that is quickly overcome with the higher selling value of the beef crosses.”

While there are variables in raising replacement stock, by being aware of production costs and inventory dairy farmers can best plan for the future of their herd.

KENSINGTON, Minn. – On a warm, windy day in September the Knights football team came to the Sabolik dairy farm to help cover their silage pile in exchange for pizza and two stock tanks the team will use for ice baths.

“I’ve been wanting to do this for years,” said Greg Sabolik of Kensington, Minn. “Just get a big group like the FFA or football team to help cover the pile.

It goes so much smoother with more bodies.”

The Saboliks chopped 270 acres of corn for silage this year to feed their milking herd of 280 cows.

“The last few years, we have covered the pile ourselves with eight people,” said JJ Sabolik, junior lineman.

JJ is proud to say he grew up on a dairy farm and takes the lessons he learned there to the eld.

“It has taught me to be disciplined and work together as a team,” JJ said.

“In the busy season, everyone has a job and sometimes that job isn’t very glamorous or fun, but it helps the team and that translates directly to the football eld. You have a job, and if everyone does their job to the best of their ability, your team will be successful.”

The football team practiced Wednesday morning before school so they could go straight to the Sabolik farm after class.

“We have this ever-going mission to give back to our community that supports us so much,” said Nate Wood, head football coach for the Knights.

“Anytime we get a chance to get together and do something as a team we jump on it, and it’s a lot of fun.”

Senior quarterback Isaiah Sykora likes that the team can give back to the community together.

Senior running back Tanner Bennett said the team looked a little different working on the farm rather than the eld.

“It’s a little different here today than playing on the eld with them,” Bennett said.

“They’re maybe working a little harder than they do in practice.”

cover a pile with a group this large before,” Mattson said.

“But our pile at home is usually a lot smaller. It’s nice to have a lot of bodies, though. Usually it’s just my family.”

Coach Wood is also familiar with dairy farm life.

He grew up milking Jerseys near Eagle Bend, Minn.

“It was a wonderful

lifestyle to grow up in and denitely shaped who I am,” Wood said. “I also worked on a dairy farm south of Morris, Minn., all four years I was in college. I think farm life teaches a lot of the same values and lessons that football does.

Hard work, responsibility, that others depend on you to take care of what you need to do

and the fact that sometimes we come up short, but it’s still worth it.”

This is Wood’s 11th year coaching football and rst as head coach of WCA-A. After covering the silage pile in what Greg Sabolik said was record time, the team ate pizza provided by the Sabolik family.

Scientists identify corn that xes its own nitrogen A public-private collaboration of researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the University of California, Davis, and Mars Inc., have identied varieties of tropical corn from Oaxaca, Mexico, that can acquire a signicant amount of the nitrogen they need from the air by cooperating with bacteria.

To do so, the corn secretes copious globs of mucuslike gel out of arrays of aerial roots along its stalk. This gel harbors bacteria that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form usable by the plant, a process called nitrogen xation. The corn can acquire 30 to 80 percent of its nitrogen in this way, but the effectiveness depends on environmental factors like humidity and rain.

Scientists have long sought corn that could x nitrogen, with the goal of reducing the crop’s high demand for articial fertilizers, which have monetary, energy and environmental costs. Further research is required to determine if the trait can be bred into commercial cultivars of corn, the world’s most productive cereal crop.

The ndings were reported Aug. 7 in the journal

PLOS Biology.

“It has been a long-term dream to transfer the ability to associate with nitrogen-xing bacteria from legumes to cereals,” says Jean-Michel Ané, a professor of bacteriology and agronomy at UW–Madison and a co-author of the new study.

Legumes, such as beans, are the only group of crop plants previously known to acquire a signicant amount of nitrogen through xation, which they perform in specialized tissues called root nodules.

Howard-Yana Shapiro, the chief agricultural ofcer at Mars, a senior fellow in the Department of Plant Sciences at UC Davis and a co-author of the report, identied the indigenous varieties of corn in a search for cultivars that might be able to host nitrogen-xing bacteria.

The corn is grown in the Sierra Mixe region of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, part of the region where corn was rst domesticated by Native Americans thousands of years ago. Farmers in the area grow the corn in nitrogen-depleted soils using traditional practices

with little or no fertilizer, conditions that have selected for a novel ability to acquire nitrogen. The biological materials for this investigation were accessed and utilized under an Access and Benet Sharing Agreement with the Sierra Mixe community and with the permission of the Mexican government.

The corn is striking. Most corn varieties grow to about 12 feet and have just one or two groups of aerial roots that support the plant near its base. But the nitrogen-xing varieties stand over 16 feet tall and develop up to eight or 10 sets of thick aerial roots that never reach the ground. Under the right conditions, these roots secrete large amounts of sugar-rich gel, providing the energy and oxygen-free conditions needed for nitrogen-xing bacteria to thrive.

Establishing that plants are incorporating nitrogen from the air is technically challenging.

“It took us eight years of work to convince ourselves that this was not an artifact,” says Ané, whose lab specializes in studying and quantifying nitrogen xation. “Technique after technique, they’re all giving the same result showing high levels of nitrogen xation in this corn.”

The group used ve different techniques across experiments in Mexico and Madison to conrm that the Sierra Mixe corn’s gel was indeed xing nitrogen from the air and that the plant could incorporate this nitrogen into its tissues.

“What I think is cool about this project is it completely turns upside down the way we think about engineering nitrogen xation,” says Ané.

The gel secreted by the corn’s aerial roots appears to work primarily by excluding oxygen and providing sugars to the right bacteria, sidestepping complex biological interactions. The research team was even able to simulate the natural gel’s effects with a similar gel created in the lab and seeded with bacteria. The simplicity of the system provides inspiration to researchers looking to identify or create more crop plants with this trait.

Breeding the trait into commercial cultivars of corn could reduce the need for articial nitrogen fertilizers, which have a host of disadvantages. More than 1 percent of the world’s total energy production goes toward producing nitrogen fertilizer. Developed countries contend with waterways polluted by leaching nitrogen, while adequate fertilizer is often inaccessible or too expensive for farmers in developing countries.

Corn that xes some of its own nitrogen could mitigate these issues, but more research will be required.

“Engineering corn to x nitrogen and form root nodules like legumes has been a dream and struggle of scientists for decades,” says Ané. “It turns out that this corn developed a totally different way to solve this nitrogen xation problem. The scientic community probably underestimated nitrogen xation in other crops because of its obsession with root nodules.”

“This corn showed us that nature can nd solutions to some problems far beyond what scientists could ever imagine,” Ané says.

Get to know Katherine Maus of Freeport, Minn.

What dairy or ag-related extracurricular activities are you involved in? I am involved in 4-H where I show dairy calves and cows at the county and state fair, and I have also been in FFA for four years. This year, I am the Melrose FFA Chapter President and also the FFA region III treasurer.

Why are you involved in these activities/organizations and what is your favorite? My whole life I have been raised on a farm and in an awesome farming community. I decided it was my turn to give back to all of them. My favorite is FFA because it gives me a variety of activities to get involved in and it also gives me an opportunity to have a voice for not only the dairy community, but also all of agriculture as a whole.

Tell us your best experience during your time in these activities/organizations. One of my best experiences in FFA included working at the CHS Miracle of Birth Center at the Minnesota State Fair. I got the chance to talk with others about animals and agriculture. Not only did I get to talk to anyone who came into the building, but I also got to meet and work with FFA members from around the state.

What is your favorite social media? Snapchat, because it lets me share pictures with my friends, along with a caption. It is also convenient for me, so I can stay in touch with friends around the state and even friends in Germany.

What are your career aspirations? I would like to work in the agriculture industry.

What is something you’ve learned from being involved in these activities/organizations? One of the biggest things I have learned from being involved in FFA is communication. With being highly active in my chapter and region, I have to be able to communicate with my region ofcers and chapter ofcers for any event. I also have to communicate with advisors, my parents, businesses and community members.

Who do you look up to? My father. He has taught me more than just cows. He has taught me how to have a work ethic, be a leader and to have a positive attitude especially when I cannot hit the curveball that comes my way. My dad has reminded me a countless number of times to do my best in every activity I am involved in and to give new opportunities a chance when they arise because you may only have the opportunity once.

Tell us something about yourself that many people do not know. I have donated my hair ve times, and hopefully during this school year I can do it again.

Tell us some of your duties on the farm. Feeding the cows, calves and every so often I milk the cows, too. I do chores before school in the mornings and after school or any practices or meetings I may have during the day.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you change it? How people view others. Our society has a habit of putting a title on others around us before we get to meet them.

If we would all at least talk to a person before putting our rst opinion into our heads, the world would be full of kindness.

MDA grants add value to Minnesota agricultural products The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) anticipates awarding up to $1 million in Value-Added Grants to advance Minnesota’s agricultural marketing and renewable energy resources.

The goal of the Value-Added Grant Program is to boost sales of Minnesota agricultural products by diversifying markets, increasing market access, and ensuring value-added food products are safe to eat. Funding for the grants was established through the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation Program.

“These grants open up opportunities in the agricultural sector and help bring people, products, and markets together. The keystone of a successful business is cooperation, and the MDA is proud to partner with businesses which are looking to add value to their operations,” said Assistant Commissioner Andrea Vaubel. “I encourage everyone who is considering expanding their business to apply for a Value-Added Grant.”

New or established for-prot businesses may apply for funding to stimulate development of value-added agricultural products through added processing, marketing, or manufacturing. Grant funds reimburse up to 25 percent of the total project cost. A maximum grant amount of $200,000 and a minimum of $1,000 will be awarded in this current funding cycle. Equipment purchases and facility improvements are eligible.

Applications must be received no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5. Applications are available at the AGRI Value-Added Grant website and may be submitted online (preferred method), by mail, or in-person.

Effects from heat stress can stretch into fall The effects of heat stress can continue long after cooler weather has arrived — even for cows not in milk. In fact, research has shown that proper cooling in the dry period improved subsequent lactation by up to 16 pounds more milk per day and 20 pounds more 3.5-percent fat-corrected milk (FCM) per day.1 “Most producers pay careful attention to the heat stress on their lactating cows, but dry cows need the same attention,” says H. Nielsen, DVM, Technical Services – Ruminant, Lallemand Animal Nutrition. “Heat stress takes a toll on every member of the herd, and the effects don’t simply dissipate when the stressor is over.”

Stress of any kind can cause animals to divert energy from performance, and their bodies do not quickly shift back into production-mode when the period is over. In research on heat-stressed herds, the period of lowest milk production occurred two months after the highest ambient temperature,2 Dr. Nielsen notes.

University of Florida research showed heat stress can even affect the growth and future milk production of calves in-utero. These calves were born earlier with decreased weight at birth and decreased reproductive performance as heifers. Their productivity struggled even after entering the lactating herd, where they experienced reductions in milk production nearing 11 pounds per day during peak lactation.3 In addition to persistent productivity losses, herds also can experience lowered immune function after a stressful event.

“It’s common for producers to see increased incidence of diseases after a stressful event,” Dr. Nielsen says. “Not just heat stress, but any time where the animal experiences changes in her environment like pen movements or even ration changes. It’s critical to maintain feed intake and keep up a robust immune system that’s primed to ght off health challenges.”

Probiotics are an easy, cost-effective way to support the immune system of cattle

against everyday natural challenges. The right probiotic can initiate an active process of stimulating microora — the dynamic and robust bacterial communities in the lower intestinal tract — to enhance lower gut health. The lower gut signals to the rest of the body, which stimulates the innate immune system, Dr. Nielsen explains.

One probiotic, Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 — found in the brand ProTernative® — has been proven to positively modulate the immune system of cattle during times of stress. In a study, S. c. boulardii CNCM I-1079 supported higher peak milk and resulted in fewer health events for transition cows.4 He advises that producers still must lay the foundation for reduced stress by providing clean, readily available water; using adequate heat abatement techniques like providing shade, fans and/or sprinklers; and ensuring cattle are fed during the cooler times of the day to keep intake up.

“We’re only beginning to see the long-term effects of heat stress in our herds.

Probiotics are a relatively new tool in helping ght against these negative effects,” Dr. Nielsen says. “It’s going to take all of our tools to protect cattle and keep performance up during — and long after — stressful periods end.”

Six tips to turn up the “heats” Getting cows bred in a timely manner and pregnant at rst service is impacted by their ability to show a heat. If cows’ environment isn’t conducive to expressing heats with physical indicators like mounting, chin resting and snifng - it could impact your herd’s bottom line.

“Many inuences play a role in a cow’s reproductive cycle,” says Stephanie Aves, business development manager for Nedap North America. “When dairy farmers have strategies in place to allow for cows to express heats, they can breed them at the optimum insemination time and better reach their reproduction goals.”

To make sure you’re not missing a cow in heat evaluate these six management areas:[1] Housing: Too many cows in one place can decrease the amount of activity in a group. Ensure cows have adequate space to allow cow-to-cow interaction by using the following parameters: – Have at least one lying stall for each cow.

– Include at least two feet of bunk space per cow.

Floor surface: Any slippery or very coarse surface makes cows nervous. Continuously keep your freestall oors clean. Incorporate these cow-friendly oor characteristics on your dairy:[2] – A dry walking surface – Condent and comfortable footing with sufcient oor grip – Durable oor Feet and leg problems: Cows with sore feet or legs exhibit less mounting activity.

When they’re not in heat and have sore feet or legs, they may stand to be mounted by another cow because they don’t want to move. Ultimately, showing a false heat.

Additionally, sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA) can cause lameness in cows.[3] To help with mounting activity, consider the following tips: – Incorporate a hoof trimming routine

Therefore, the chance of more than one cow being in heat on any day becomes less for smaller herds or with an increase in pregnant cows in a group. Consider dividing your groups so higher producing, early lactation cows are together in a group. Not only does this offer more efcient heat detection and articial insemination, but it also allows you to productively feed a diet for higher production.[4] Keep cows cool: External temperatures above 85 degrees F cause less mounting because cows are uncomfortable in this high-temperature weather.[5] Integrate proper heat abatement strategies for your farm to keep your cows cool and active during warmer weather.

This could include fans, water sprinklers and shade canopies.

Activity monitors: Watching for heats 24/7 is another challenge you face. With an activity monitoring system and having the above tips set in place, you don’t have to worry about missing a single heat. Even when you’re not around to see it.

“Inseminating cows at the right time matters to your dairy’s bottom-line, so it’s important to catch cows in heat when it’s most productive to breed them,” says Aves. “Activity monitors are a tool to track heats 24/7 so you don’t have to spend time watching for heats or worry about missing a heat. However, to catch cows in heat, cows need to physically show their heats. Having appropriate environmental and management protocols in place will help ensure you never miss a single heat.”

The forages being harvested right now across North America will soon be feedstuffs.

The goal of silage is to preserve the quality and nutrients present in those crops at the time of harvest.

“When producers start with good forage and use tried-and-true techniques, there’s no need for a silver bullet solution. The tools for creating high-quality silage are already on your farm today,” says Bob Charley, Ph.D., Forage Products Manager.

There are six areas producers should manage during harvest and ensiling to get the best quality silage possible, Dr. Charley advises: 1) Prepare equipment. Equipment should be serviced and calibrated prior to harvest to help avoid delays and bottlenecks.

2) Harvest at the right maturity and moisture level.

forage or storage structure help maximize nutrients/DM preservation and feed intake by the animal.

3) Check chop length. Chop length affects ensiling characteristics and feed quality. A short chop facilitates packing, minimizing air inltration. A longer chop length increases effective ber in the diet. Finding a ‘happy medium’ is important.

4) Use research-proven forage inoculants. Inoculants will help drive an efcient fermentation and also prevent aerobic spoilage.

5) Pack well. Achieving target packing densities is vital and requires adequate packing weight, time and technique.

6) Seal fast and tight. Fully covered and sealed will help ensure a good fermentation, minimize nutrient and DM losses, maximize feed quality and increase production from the forage base.

Many of these techniques are designed to reduce exposure to oxygen, which is the main enemy to highquality silage. Oxygen can slow down the ensiling fermentation and allow spoilage organisms to grow. This can result in lost DM and nutrients, or worse, affect herd

health and fertility.

Inoculants can help minimize spoilage in the silage.

Using an inoculant containing an efcient, proven homolactic lactic acid bacterium (LAB) like Pediococcus pentosaceus 12455 — coupled with enzymes to drive the fermentation — can ensure a fast, efcient initial ensiling fermentation with a rapid pH drop, preventing the growth of spoilage organisms that cause high DM losses.

After opening, silage is once again exposed to oxygen, but an inoculant can continue to provide benets all the way to feedout. For example, Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 applied at 400,000 CFU per gram of silage or 600,000 CFU per gram of high-moisture corn (HMC), has been uniquely reviewed by the FDA and allowed to claim improved aerobic stability.

“A research-proven inoculant can contribute to high-quality silage, but there’s no substitute for good management practices from harvest all the way to feedout,” Dr. Charley says. “The result of getting each step right is cost-effective feedstuffs that support animal performance.”
