Don agreed. “[The kids] get to grow up alongside the farm and

learn along with everything,” he said.

As the Borgschatz family has developed their dairy, being mindful of maintaining low operating costs, they have placed a focus on ge-

nomics.

“It would be tough to see the cows go,” Anne said. “We are fth-generation farmers; it would be hard to let the thread drop.”

Don agreed.

“The thought of losing the cows is harder than going through the tough times,” he said. “It’s the little things. We had a 4-H travel exchange student with us the past few days, and she helped milk. It was cool to let her be around a cow for the rst time.”

While the dairy is a commitment for the Borgschatz family, they also make time for their other enterprises.

As Don continues to spend much of his time managing the dairy farm, his cousins take care of the day-to-day tasks of the seed business. When harvest arrives, all cousins help.

As dairy farmers, the Borgschatzes nd value in companies that can provide products that make daily tasks easier. For this reason, the family developed their third business more than 25 years ago.

The family produces and sells roughly 150 restraints a year.

“Henry helps with the welding when he can,” Don said. “He likes to build stuff.”

Off the farm and outside of the family businesses, Anne and the children are active in their community.

“I am a leader for the Happy Ramblers 4-H Club and an adult member of the Wabasha County 4-H Executive Council,” Anne said. “Emma also serves as a youth leader and as a 4-H ambassador.”

This past year, Emma exhibited ve Holstein animals at the Wabasha County Fair.

For the Borgschatz family’s commitment to the dairy industry and their community, it is tting they received this year’s farm family award.

“Everyone in Wabasha County is so involved,” Anne said. … “It is so humbling to be farm family of the year, especially as we look to others for advice.”

Dairying in harmony with nature Richmonds discuss pasture strategies

COLFAX, Wis. – Even though a downpour during their pasture walk was not well-timed, dairy farmer John Richmond was grateful for the rain nonetheless. The pastures were beginning to look parched.

“The alfalfa is still growing, but all of the cool-season grasses had gone dormant,” Richmond said.

Richmond, who milks around 200 cows near Colfax, Wis., with his wife, Chelsea, purchased the milking herd from master grazier Charles Flodquist when Richmond nished his apprenticeship program under Flodquist with the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship last year. Chelsea, who works off the farm as a math teacher, helps on the dairy, as well.

The couple hosted a pasture walk with Wisconsin Farmers Union and River Country Resource Conservation and Development at their farm Aug. 24.

ruary,” Richmond said. “I’m keeping my rst 80 pregnant cows this year and selling the rest that calved in prior to and during this spring. I am also running cows with the bull some to save semen, which I do anyway if they don’t take to their rst two services with A.I.” During the pasture walk, Richmond explained that even during periods of depressed milk prices he is not afraid to try new things to make the farm more environmentally friendly, including planting varieties of forage to improve nutrition and soil biology while reducing erosion and nutrient loss in the hills and valleys.

“I’m all about variety with farming practices to farm in a more eco-friendly way,” Richmond said. “I am always throwing something new in the grain drill to see what comes up, like Balansa clover and hairy vetch. I gure that as long as it isn’t tall fescue, which isn’t very palatable to cows, you’re golden.”

That love of variety also carries over into the milking cows, which are comprised of Holsteins crossed with Normande, Fleckvieh, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire, Montbéliarde and Jersey.

Richmond breeds for strong udder attachment with plenty of bloom combined with the stronger stature and muscling of dual-purpose cattle.

“If it looks like a Holstein, it gets bred to something else and if it looks like something else, it gets bred to Holstein,” Richmond said. “I’m expecting to milk cows and ship beef when their productive life is done. I’m looking for beef stature with 92-point udders.”

The cows are pastured 365 days out of the year on 380 acres at the home farm with 40 acres across the fenceline and 72 up the road, with additional feed harvested in the form of baled hay, baleage and corn silage. They are fed

“Manure is like glue,” Richmond said. “It sinks through the snow and stays there on the soil surface.

You can see circles on those pastures after overwintering where the grass is greener and more lush.”

Not long after purchasing the cows and waiting for his rst milk check to arrive, Richmond found himself out of grain corn in the dead of winter. It ended up working out because he plans on returning to a grain-free ration once winter arrives and the grazing season ends.

“Between the grass, baleage and corn silage we are 100 percent forage fed,” he said. “There was an initial drop in milk, but the components came up so the milk check was almost the same.”

Richmond said throughout the summer he has returned to feeding four pounds of grain per milking.

“As soon as the grass started to green up and I ran out of corn silage, I had to start feeding grain in the parlor again to bring my MUNs down,” Richmond said. “But, once the grazing season is nished, I will gladly switch their diet back to corn silage and baleage. The more we can stay away from grain, the healthier the cows have seemed to be.”

Between keeping things as natural for the cows as possible while incorporating innovative practices to keep the farm environmentally and scally sustainable, the Richmonds are doing their best to dairy in harmony with nature.

“I am all about staying in the black this year and studying what is most cost-effective,” Richmond said.

ST. OLAF, Iowa – The Clayton County Dairy Promotion Committee has pledged to donate 24 gallons of milk every week to the Clayton County Food Shelf. The food shelf updated their refrigeration storage and has space to keep more perishable foods, like dairy products, on hand.

The Clayton County Farm Bureau challenged the dairy promoters to donate milk for two weeks in June, and they would take the other two weeks for June Dairy Month. In April, the motion was brought forward and the group agreed to donate 24 gallons a week for the year.

“As a committee we thought that since some families cannot afford milk, they may bypass the real dairy product for a cheaper version,” Nancy Moon said. “We thought this would be a good way to get the real, nutritious milk into their homes.”

Moon and her husband, Dan, and son, Ryan, milk 45 cows in a tiestall barn on Moondale Farm near Monona, Iowa. They also farm 300 acres of oats, hay, soybeans and corn.

The vote passed and the group began donations.

“It’s amazing,” said Utoni Ruff, Clayton County Food Shelf supervisor. “I had to come up with funds to purchase meat and that took away the milk money I would’ve had.

“I go through the 24 gallons in a week,” Ruff said. “But it’s a comfortable number to have on hand.

The committee has been very good to me. I do the best I can with their

groups and individuals volunteer their time to work in the Dairy Bar.” They give back to the community in other areas as well.

“We have been promoting dairy products to non-prot fundraisers and bible schools for all churches in the county for many years,” Moon said. “We donate cheese sticks to all county school’s after prom parties, and at our dairy banquet we donate butter as door prizes to each family that attends.”

They also contribute dairy products to the Clayton County Fair commodity supper and 4-H omelette brunch every year.

“We have also donated butter to the food shelf for their holiday shop baskets in December,” Moon said.

Corn yields expected to be second highest on record The Agriculture Department lowered its 2018 milk production estimate in the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report (WASDE), due to slightly lower milk cow numbers and a slower rate of growth in milk per cow in the third quarter, but raised its 2019 estimate on slightly higher cow inventories.

2018 production and marketings were projected at 217.8 and 216.8 billion pounds respectively, down 100 million pounds from last month’s estimates. If realized, 2018 production would still be up 2.3 billion pounds or 1.1 percent from 2017.

2019 production and marketings were estimated at 221.0 and 220.0 billion pounds respectively, up 100 million pounds on both. If realized, 2019 production would be up 3.2 billion pounds or 1.5 percent from 2018.

Fat basis export forecasts for 2018 and 2019 were reduced from the previous month on slowing shipments of whey products and a number of other dairy products, while fat basis import forecasts for both years were raised on higher purchases of imported butterfat products and cheese.

On a skim-solids basis, export forecasts for 2018 and 2019 were lowered on weaker whey products sales to China. Skim-solids basis import forecasts for 2018 and 2019 were raised on continued strong purchases of cheese and other miscellaneous dairy products.

CCC donations reected the recent pre-solicitation notice for the Trade Mitigation Food Purchase and Distribution Program.

Cheese, NDM, and whey prices were forecast higher for 2018 while butter prices were lowered from the previous month. The 2018 Class III milk price forecast was raised on higher forecast cheese and whey prices.

Look for the Class III price to average $14.85$15.05 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 35 cents from last month’s projection and compares to a 2017 average of $16.17 and $14.87 in 2016. The 2019 average is now expected to range $15.20-$16.20, up 25 cents from what was projected a month ago.

The Class IV price was raised as higher forecast nonfat dry milk prices more than offset lower butter prices. It is predicted to average $14-$14.30 per cwt. in 2018, up a nickel from last month’s estimate and compares to $15.16 in 2017 and $13.77 in 2016.

NDM and whey prices for 2019 were raised while the butter price forecast was reduced from last month.

The 2019 cheese price forecast was unchanged.

The 2019 Class IV price is projected to average

$14.30-$15.40, up 55 cents from what was expected a month ago.

This month’s 2018-19 U.S. corn outlook is for larger production, increased domestic use, greater exports, and higher ending stocks, according to the WASDE. The Crop Production report forecasts corn production at 14.827 billion bushels, up 241 million or 2 percent from August and up 2 percent from last year on an increased yield forecast.

Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 181.3 bushels per acre, up 2.9 bushels from the August forecast and up 4.7 bushels from 2017. If realized, the crop would be the second highest on record. Among the major producing states, yields are forecast to be record high in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio and South Dakota.

Corn supplies are higher from last month, as a larger crop more than offsets a small decline in beginning stocks due to higher estimated exports for 2017-18. Feed and residual use for 2018-19 was raised 50 million bushels with a larger crop and lower expected prices. Corn used for ethanol was raised 25 million bushels. With supply rising more than use, corn ending stocks are up 90 million bushels from last month. The season-average corn price received by producers is projected 10 cents lower with a midpoint of $3.50 per bushel.

Soybean production was projected at a record 4.693 million bushels, up 107 million or 2 percent from August and up 7 percent from last year on a record yield forecast of 52.8 bushels per acre. Yields are expected to average a record high 52.8 bushels per acre, up 1.2 bushels from last month and up 3.7 bushels from last year. Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at 88.9 million acres, unchanged from August but down 1 percent from 2017.

Soybean supplies were raised with higher production only partly offset by lower beginning stocks. With soybean crush up 10 million bushels and exports unchanged, ending stocks are projected at 845 million bushels, up 60 million from last month.

The 2018-19 U.S. season-average soybean price is forecast at $7.35 to $9.85 per bushel, down 30 cents at the midpoint. Soybean meal prices were lowered $5.00 at the midpoint to $290 to $330 per short ton.

Soybean oil prices were unchanged at 28.0 to 32.0 cents per pound.

All cotton production is forecast at 19.7 million 480-pound bales, up 2 percent from August but down 6 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 895 pounds per harvested acre, down 16 pounds from last month and down 10 pounds from last year.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced its last Class I milk prices for the Golden State. The next one will be the Federal order Class base price announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The October Class I price is $18.13 per cwt. for the north and $18.40 for the south. Both are up $1.26 from September, 11 cents and 10 cents respectively above October 2017, and the highest Class I price since November 2017.

The north’s 10-month average is $16.40, down from $17.94 a year ago and compares to $15.98 in 2016. The southern average, at $16.67, is down from $18.21 a year ago and compares to $16.25 in 2016. The October Federal order Class I price will be announced Sept. 19 and the November price will be announced Oct. 17.

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit Japan September 6, and in a region that provides about half of the country’s milk supply. Additional quakes followed and the Daily Dairy Report says the northern region lost power to 50 percent of the island, according to Bloomberg. The power loss affects farms, which of course can be supplied by generators but processors unable to handle the milk may lead to milk being dumped and shortages for milk and dairy products to consumers.

New Zealand and Europe are the largest suppliers of butterfat to the Japanese market, as well as skim milk powder, according to the DDR, but is also a good customer of the U.S. The farmer funded Cooperatives Working Together export assistance program reported a major milestone this week topping 1 billion pounds worth of milk so far in 2018. The sum represents 50 percent of the overall rise in U.S. milk production through August of this year, according to CWT. To date, 2018 CWT export sales total 49.64 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 12.96 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 45.7 million pounds of whole milk powder to 34 countries on ve continents. These sales are the equivalent of 1.083 billion pounds of milk on a milkfat basis and compares to an estimated total increase in U.S. milk production of 2.095 billion pounds during the rst eight months of 2018, versus the same period last year.

Checking the markets, Mid-September cheese prices were down again. CME Cheddar blocks closed the second Friday of the month at $1.6050 per pound, down 5 3/4-cents on the week and a half-cent below a year ago. The barrels nished at $1.42, down 8 cents, 3 cents below a year ago, and 18 1/2-cents below the blocks. 12 cars of block traded hands on the week and 30 of barrel.

FC Stone said in its Sept. 12 Early Morning Update that “Favorable milk production weather in the west and forecasts for that to continue may be creeping into the market’s mind as we wait for additional fundamental data.”

Friday’s edition added, “US milk production in July was only up 0.4 percent which initially looked friendly to prices, but behind the scenes fat and protein components in the milk have been growing signicantly over the past few years. Higher components mean we have higher cheese yields which combined with more processing capacity has kept the cheese markets in check.”

Cheese demand reports in the Central region are generally positive, according to Dairy Market News.

Food service demand is seeing an uptick as schools have reopened in the Midwest but cheese producers are not expecting orders to remain as steady following market drops as buyers may hold off and wait for further declines. Milk availability was mixed on the week. Most spot milk prices reported were at a premium, but there were some at market prices reported as well.

Western cheese makers report that retail orders are strong, and with most educational institutions back in session, some food service accounts are pulling a little more cheese. Contacts say discounted milk loads are not as readily available, but they are having no trouble getting the milk they need. Cheese inventories, while heavy, are not burdensome but some contacts are a bit perplexed, says DMN. “They see steady supply and demand signals, but are trying to fathom the driving force behind the slippage of prices on the cash market. As a result, a few end users are wanting to take a wait and see approach. Until the market provides clearer price signals, they are willing to work through inventories a little more rather than make new purchases.”

Spot butter fell to $2.1975 per pound Wednesday, rallied Thursday, and closed Friday at $2.2350, up a half-cent on the week but 21 1/4-cents below a year ago, with 15 sales reported for the week.

Cream was a little tighter this week, according to butter makers. There was not a scarcity, but offers were lighter. Churning activity was similar to the previous week, steady to a bit higher with the exception of plants temporarily closed due to recent oods in Wisconsin.

Butter interest is reportedly strong, although markets are uncertain. Some contacts suggest larger volumes of imported butter may put some downward pressure on domestic markets in the near term.

The Western butter market is dened as rm, according to DMN. Butter production remains active, now that cream stock offerings are more available.

Retail requests for butter are going on at a stable rate.

The seasonal baking season is also adding up to butter sales and contributing to reducing inventories which are higher compared to the previous year. Despite good market conditions, butter sellers reveal that prices are still lower, says DMN. Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 87 1/2-cents per pound, down 3 1/2-cents on the week but 5 1/4-cents above a year ago, with 5 cars sold.

The dry whey market kept getting bid to new record highs until a car was nally sold on Wednesday and one on Thursday. It closed Friday at 52 1/4-cents per pound, up three-quarter cents on the week.

In politics, lawmakers have returned to Capitol Hill from their August recess to tackle several issues before adjourning for the fall campaign season.

Funding for government agencies is set to expire when the scal year ends Sept. 30.

National Milk reports that “to avoid a government shutdown, Congress must pass a continuing resolution to extend current spending levels into the expected post-election lame duck session of Congress.

the coming weeks on several appropriations measures for the 2019 scal year, lessening their workload after the November election.”

September is also a critical period for nalizing work on the 2018 Farm Bill, as the current bill expires Sept. 30. The joint House-Senate conference committee held its rst ofcial public meeting on Sept. 5, and leaders from both House and Senate Agriculture Committees began meeting informally during last month’s recess, “underscoring the urgency of the situation,” says NMPF. Congress may also hold a vote on immigration legislation in September.

NMPF says it has worked with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway (RTX) and Ranking Member Collin Peterson (D-MN), as well as Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), to advance the AG and Legal Workforce Act (H.R. 6417). The measure would create a new H-2C guest worker program for agricultural workers, including yearround dairy workers, coupled with new enforcement measures including E-Verify. This legislation was

introduced before the August recess and NMPF says it has been working to build support for action on the measure in Congress yet this year.

A new ruling issued by a U.S. District Judge in South Carolina in mid-August has revived the 2015 Waters of the United States (WOTUS) regulation for some states, though the rule does not apply in other states where court actions have stayed its implementation. NMPF says this most recent legal turn comes just after it submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that said the 2015 rule must be permanently rescinded and the prior version of the regulation re-codied to provide better clarity for dairy farmers. Warm temps are helping to advance crop maturity.

Expectations remain high for another year of large crop yields. Early harvest yield reports out of Illinois and Southern states are in the mid 200’s to 300 bushels per acre for corn, with soybeans as high as 80-100. Although these yields do not represent the entire corn belt, it provides good indication of yield expectations.

In its September supply and demand report USDA estimated carryout stocks for corn at 1.78 billion bushels.

For comparison, U.S. carryout stocks averaged 1.54 billion bushels over the past 10 years. Although mildly bearish to prices, the trend for lower year over year supply declines remain a longer term concern.

Soybean supplies are expected to jump significantly with USDA forecasting a record 846 million bushel ending stock number. This compares to the 10 year average of 256 million bushels. This should be construed as extremely bearish for prices.

how U.S. soybean tariffs are impacting the international price relationship between soybeans and meal, and will likely remain a supportive influence on meal prices until the next South American crop becomes available and tariffs disappear.

Milk prices typically perform well seasonally from August through November as fall demand improves, and summer heat affects milk production. The underlying forces in the current milk market situation support this seasonal trend, but heavy barrel offerings in the cash spot markets have minimized the markets opportunity to reflect this.

Weekly AMS reports reflect an improving milk supply situation. This should continue to support prices, but may have a limited impact due to softer international markets.

As prices improve, demand begins to move towards cheaper product supply sources. Until international prices improve, U.S. prices will be limited in their capacity to rally.

Duo embodies dairy lifestyle VanMaar Farms evolving for the future in Canadian dairy industry

GODERICH, Ontario, Canada – Sitting on her family’s porch, watching the sun set and cows graze is one of Annie VanMaar’s favorite things. Dairy farming allows for this tranquil moment, and she does not plan to say goodbye to the industry anytime soon.

Annie and her husband, Jake, and their three children, Wesley, 11, Gloria, 9, and Eliza, 8, milk 110 Holsteins on their dairy farm, VanMaar Farms, near Goderich, Ontario, Canada.

They manage 440 acres of owned and rented land on which they produce corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa.

dairying on the farmsite while his parents, Bert and JoAnne, remain active on the farm.

Jake’s grandfather, Fred, immigrated from Holland and bought the farm in 1978.

“It is a beautiful area here, nice hills and Lake Huron is at the end of our road,” Annie said.

Jake worked as a custom combiner for one year, traveling from Texas to Alberta, Canada before returning to the farm full time in 2001. Jake and Annie married in 2005 and moved to the farm in 2013.

Annie works off the farm part time as a teachers’ assistant at the Huron Christian School in Clinton, Ontario where their children also attend.

In addition to family, the farm currently employs three individuals.

Two years ago, the VanMaars made the transition to three times a day milking.

Currently, they milk in a double-8 herringbone parlor.

“We weren’t meeting our quota,” Annie said of the Canadian quota system for producing milk. “There were quota increases happening, and we just weren’t meeting them so we went to three times a day to produce more milk.”

Jake said the quota system is based on kilograms of butterfat shipped (one kilogram is approximately 2.2 pounds). A dairy farmer begins by buying kilogram amounts they are allowed to

ship per day.

“That allotment basically keeps our supply and demand right,” Jake said. “What our market calls for, we produce within 1 percent of that. It keeps milk stable and gives us equity.”

The VanMaars are contracted to ship 140 kilograms, or 308 pounds, of butterfat per day.

“We love quota systems,” Annie said. “We always are guaranteed that check in a sense. It is fairly stable and even.”

Jake agreed.

“Our milk board sets our milk price with a formula that comes from cost of production and milk sales,” Jake said.

“Our milk prices have been trending down over the past 4-5 years, and like everyone else, cost of production is slowly increasing. This has made us proactive in farm management.”

Days at VanMaar Farms begin at 5:30 a.m., with Jake, Bert and Wesley beginning the morning milking. A quick breakfast follows, then it is time for morning chores.

“I feed calves and manage the calf barn; his dad, Bert, makes feed; our hired hand does feed clean-up and puts fresh feed out, and Jake does everything else that keeps a farm running,” Annie said. “Or, if someone is away, he’ll do whatever needs to be done.”

The cows are fed a TMR of corn silage, haylage, high moisture corn, soybean meal, a mineral and protein blend, and palm fat.

The herd is housed in a naturallyventilated freestall barn bedded with recycled cardboard material.

“We’ve been using [the bedding] for a little over a year now,” Jake said.

The bedding material is delivered to the farm every four weeks and is managed with the manure.

After morning chores, a coffee break is taken at 10:30 a.m.

Maintenance work and chores follow before lunchtime. The afternoon milking begins at 1 p.m., and an afternoon coffee break occurs at 3 p.m. Calves are fed at 5 p.m., with supper following at 6. A third milking begins at 8:30 p.m.

“We try to have Sunday milking covered to make that our family time whether it is going to the beach or go on a ride around the farm,” she said. …

“The kids are always around. If Jake is hauling manure all day, they hop in and out of the tractor. You don’t even think of it. That’s life. We are always together.”

This October, Jake and Annie hope to have more time with their family as they will begin milking their herd in two Lely Astronaut 4 robotic milking units, which are being retrotted into their existing freestall barn.

“It has been a natural progression from 3X to go to robots,” Annie said.

“We have a hard time nding long term employees. … It eases some of the stress on us and also it will be nice for the cows to monitor them better. …

Although we think it is ironic we are getting robots now because our current employees are dependable and work hard, but now is the right timing.”

Jake agreed.

“This has always been a family farm,” he said. “So when we went to 3X, we started having employees and it was a big adjustment relying on other people. This is a way to get back to being more self-reliant.”

A day in the life at Moorse Dairy Family focuses energy on nishing silage

– Every day is a swirl of activity at Moorse Dairy. But Sept. 11 was especially hectic as the Moorse family focused their energies on nishing this year’s corn silage chopping.

Moorse Dairy includes

Bernie Moorse and his brother, Greg, along with Greg’s wife, Becky, and their children, Brittany, 27, Grant, 25, Garrett, 21, Gared, 18, Grady, 16, and Brooke, 14.

The Moorse family milks 90 cows in a tiestall barn.

They farm about 1,200 acres, which includes 850 acres of tillable ground.

The day began at 5 a.m. with the morning milking.

Bernie and Becky usually handle milking duties.

“Our grandparents got their start on this farm,” Bernie said. “They rented the place at rst and were eventually able to buy it.”

While Bernie and Becky milked, Greg fed the cattle.

In addition to their dry cows and replacement animals, the Moorses have several hundred head of fat cattle. The fat cattle are kept at Greg and Becky’s farm, located about one mile south of Bernie’s place. There

are about 1,000 head of cattle on the Moorse farm at any one time.

propelled silage chopper. Greg fueled up the giant machine and washed its windows while Garrett cleaned its radiator with an air hose. The two men carefully inspected the chopper, looking for any signs of trouble.

“Yesterday was a long day,” Greg said. “After we nished those two

nuts that were rusted in place.

“One of the guys at Gorter’s Clay and Dairy used his cutting torch to convince the lug nuts that they had to move,” Garrett said.

The Moorses turn their milk cows out of the barn every morning. While the barn is empty, they run the gutter cleaner, replenish the bedding in the stalls and use a motorized feed cart to spool out fresh TMR. Once the barn was clean, Bernie opened the door and the cows led in.

Bernie announced each cow’s name as she sauntered to her assigned stall.

Greg and Garret guided the cows as necessary and clipped their leather neck collars to a chain.

Morning chores were completed shortly after noon. The Moorses then threw themselves into the push to complete silage chopping.

“We bagged two 200-foot bags of silage yesterday,” Greg said. “We’re going to pile the rest of our silage on the ground. It’s cheaper and faster than bagging. We’ll feed the pile rst, so losses should be minimal.”

we’ve ever had,” Greg said as he piloted the chopper around squishy areas at the edge of the eld. “One day at the end of June, we got 6.5 inches of rain. Our pastures were even underwater. We’ve never seen that before.”

Once the eld was opened up, Greg began to pump silage into trucks that drove alongside the chopper.

“Silage chopping is my favorite time of year,” Greg said. “We do a lot of exchange work with our neighbors.

Last fall, one of them asked me to chop earlage for him. I said ne, as long as you combine my beans for me.

At the end of the day, I had chopped all of his earlage and he had combined a quarter-section of our soybeans.

Everybody came out ahead.”

At about 4 in the afternoon, Garrett quit hauling silage so he could milk two dozen of his goats. Garrett owns

about 100 dairy goats.

“I bought the mother of my top goat for $100 when she was just a few days old,” Garrett said. “I took one look at her pedigree and knew that I had to own her.”

Garrett’s dairy goats earned several top awards at the 2018 Minnesota State Fair. The Moorse family has been involved in showing animals for many years. They have also been leasing some of their goats, rabbits and cattle to 4-H members. The Moorse family has helped Lyon County win the state fair’s dairy herdsmanship award for four years in a row.

The silage pile began to grow as a neighbor’s fourwheel-drive tractor and dozer packed the fresh, green fodder.

Bernie paused to chat for a moment with his cousin, Luke Moorse, who was helping with the silage-making operation.

Bernie drove to his farm to begin setting up for the evening milking and Becky soon joined him.

“Grain farmers harvest once a year in the fall,” Bernie said. “Dairy farmers harvest every day of the year.”

Later, Brittany arrived at the dairy barn and warmed up milk for the Moorses’ baby heifer calves. Brittany works for the local newspaper, The Minneota Mascot, and writes a column, called Milk Maid.

Her duties at the farm include feeding weaned calves, helping with milking and managing herd records.

We’ve got two 200foot silage bags done, and have probably two more to do.

We’re finishing up RAINFALL our fourth crop hay, TOTALS Last 2 it hasn’t been too Weeks shabby. Our beans are maybe 2-3 weeks away. One neighbor did theirs yesterday, 3.1” they were dry and the dust was flying.

Another neighbor’s Since April 25 beans are still half 20.1” green and yellow. As far as combining corn, we wait til it gets as dry as possible, so that will be mid-October.

Corn silage harvest has been in full swing for the last week as well as some last RAINFALL cuttings of hay. TOTALS Temperatures have Last 2 been in the 80-90’s Weeks with high humidity and everyone is looking forward to some cooler temps.

We were chopping before it started raining today, Sept. 19.

Most people around here have started RAINFALL combining their beans, TOTALS they changed fast. We Last 2 only have 60 acres of Weeks beans, so we hire that out instead of having a head for it. We made some snaplage 4” yesterday. We still have about 1,500 acres of corn to do with the Since April 25 custom business.

We haven’t had much rain this month, less than a half inch. The other day we got four-one hundredths of an inch, and in Shell Lake, RAINFALL Wis., they had four-tenths. I checked the corn the other day and it was down to about 28-30 percent, so hopefully the weather will hold out so we can get that Since April 25 done. They are talking rain 11.06” later this week, and at this point, I hope we don’t get it. I’d like to get our corn off, spread some lime and liquid manure and be done for the year.

It’s getting dry enough where we need to get it done.

We got our fourth crop hay done, it yielded pretty good but was purple with all the rain.

Some Weeks guys are getting stuck and they are leaving a lot of ruts. The tonnage has been ranging from 24-34 ton an acre. We did 275 of corn silage. I haven’t seen any soybeans come out, but I think they are Since April 25 41.1” close. There was a lot of hay being done last week. There have been manure tanks running real hard. We’ve had so much rain the pits are full.

Last week was hot and dry, and it really pushed the crops along. Our soybeans lost all of their leaves in a week. The silage yield was above average for tonnage 3” and its grain yield was 60-70 bushels per acre more than last year’s Since April 25 average. We have 32.3” finished our 4th cutting of alfalfa and hope to harvest a final crop from our new seeding next week.

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 3/4 cup milk salt and pepper to taste

Spray slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Layer half of the frozen tater tots on the bottom of the slow cooker. Sprinkle 1/3 of the bacon pieces. Top with 1/2 of the shredded cheese. 1 gallon chocolate or vanilla ice cream

Prepare cake according to package directions; bake in a 9x13-inch baking dish and cool completely. Use ice cream that comes in a rectangular carton.

Remove the carton and, using a piece of string or dental floss, cut the ice cream in half lengthwise (long side to long side) and place the two layers side by side on a piece of waxed paper. Place the cooled cake over the ice cream. Trim the cake and ice cream so that the edges match. Place a board or serving platter over the cake, hold onto the waxed paper and board, and flip the ice cream cake over. Remove the waxed paper and smooth out the seam between the ice cream slabs. Cover with waxed paper and freeze until very firm. Decorate as desired.

Preheat oven to 325 F and grease a 3 qt. baking dish (9x13). Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. When boiling, add dried pasta and cook 1 minute less than the package directs for al dente. Drain and drizzle with olive oil. Grate cheeses and divide into three sections – 3 cups for the sauce, 1 1/2 cups for the layer and 1 1/2 cups for the topping. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Sprinkle in flour and whisk to combine. Cook for 1 minute, whisking often. Slowly pour in about 2 cups or so of the milk and half and half, while whisking until smooth. Slowly pour in the remaining milk and half and half, while whisking until combined and smooth.

Continue to heat over medium heat, whisking until thickened to a very thick consistency. Stir in spices and half the reserved cheese sauce grated cheese, stirring to melt and combine. Stir in remaining cheese sauce grated cheese, and stir until completely melted and smooth. In a large mixing bowl, combine drained pasta with cheese sauce, stirring to combine fully. Pour half of the pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with reserved layer grated cheese, then top with the remaining pasta mixture. Sprinkle the top with the topping grated cheese and bake for 15 minutes, until cheesy is bubbly and lightly golden brown.

Baked French toast & maple yogurt & fruit 6 slices bread or Texas Toast 1-inch thick 4 egg whites 1 egg 1 cup fat-free dry milk powder 1 1/4 cups low-fat milk

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup fat-free plain yogurt 3 Tbsp. maple syrup 3 cups mixed berries(strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and/or blackberries)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Arrange bread in a greased 9x13-inch glass baking dish; set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat egg and egg whites. In another small bowl, dissolve dry milk powder into milk. Mix thoroughly to make sure no lumps remain. Add milk mixture, vanilla and cinnamon to eggs; whisk well.

Pour mixture slowly over bread. Bake for 25 minutes or until bread is golden brown. While bread is baking, mix yogurt and syrup in a small bowl. Spoon yogurt mixture over individual servings of baked French toast. Top with fresh berries.
