People in the dairy community Barron County students earn Farm Tech scholarships Three volunteer students who helped put on Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Barron County last month were honored with college scholarships. During the committee's volunteer appreciation event this week in Rice Lake, Jacob Pintens from Dallas was given $2,000, while Sarah Nichols, also from Dallas, and Grandon Scheil, Prairie Farm, earned $1,000 and $500, respectively. Each of the recipients were volunteers at the show, held in July at Breezy Hill Dairy. Scheil provided seven pieces of equipment for the Heritage Tractor and served as spotter on trams providing tours for visitors. He also volunteered spreading wood shavings in tents and with cleanup in the youth area. Nichols was active in the youth tent where she volunteered all three days doing demonstrations and announcing at the outdoor stage. And Pintens did a dairy tting demonstration in the youth tent and was involved with farm tours serving as tram spotter and driver. He promoted the show and recruited volunteers. The support for the scholarships was provided by the Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Board of Directors. Members of the board's executive committee served as the evaluators of the applicants.

Fifteen youth receive James W. Crowley Leadership Awards Fifteen Wisconsin dairy youth received James W. Crowley Leadership Awards at the 2013 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. These youth were rewarded for their outstanding dairy project work. Each award winner received a plaque provided by the James W. Crowley Dairy Management and Extension Fund. The three top youth, Ethan Dado of Polk County, Jessica Pralle of Clark County, and Bradley Griswold of Jefferson County, received $500 scholarships for continuing their dairy educations. In addition to the $500 scholarship winners, Crowley Award recipients were: Bryce Krull, Jefferson County; Jordan Siemers, Manitowoc County; Rachel Gerbitz, Rock County; Valerie Kramer, Fond du Lac County; Amber Johnson, Barron County; Jacob Pintens, Barron County; Maryjane Behm, Winnebago County; Charles Moore, Grant County; Jacob Brokish, Iowa County; Lukas Wymer, Green County; Tiffany Roberts, Manitowoc County; and Robert Martin, Lafayette County. The judges for this year’s Crowley Awards were Ted Halbach and Laura Hernandez, both are UW-Madison Department of Dairy Science Faculty. This award program is in honor and memory of James W. Crowley, longtime extension dairy specialist at the UW-Madison and strong supporter of dairy youth project work. Lantzky receives Iowa Jersey Youth Achievement Award The Iowa Jersey Cattle Club selected Dayle Lantzky to receive the Iowa Jersey Youth Achievement Award during their Summer Picnic event at Cinnamon Ridge Dairy (John Maxwell family), Donahue, Iowa on July 6. Lantzky, 17, is the daughter of Brian and Heidi Lantzky and is a junior at North Fayette Valley Community High School. She owns ve Jersey heifers and three cows, stays busy on her family’s farm and is active in 4-H, FFA and her local church. She is currently serving as the Fayette County Dairy Princess, and her Dairy Quiz Bowl team will compete in Louisville, Ky. for the National title. Lantzky will receive a registered Jersey heifer calf donated from an Iowa Jersey breeder. In addition, she is now eligible to apply for the National Jersey Youth Achievement Award, given each fall at Louisville. Kentucky.
