Church volunteers raise money by covering silage piles By Jerry Nelson

MAURICE, Iowa – One of the toughest jobs on a dairy farm is covering the silage pile after chopping is done. A large crew of people who are willing to carry tires up the steep slopes of a silage pile must be assembled. Time is critical, as the pile must be covered quickly in order to preserve the quality of the silage.
A volunteer church group in northwestern Iowa has made covering dairy farmers’ silage piles as easy as making a phone call or sending an email. Bethel Christian Reformed Church, located in Sioux Center, Iowa, has been offering their silage pile covering service for the past 10 years. They currently cover silage piles in an area that stretches from Beresford, S.D., to Roy-

al, Iowa. Pastor John Lee of Bethel Christian Reformed Church grew up on a 130-cow dairy near McBain, Mich. Bethel Christian Reformed Church has about 660 members. “Carrying tires up a silage pile was a part of my childhood,” Lee said. “When I rst came here seven years ago, I was excited to learn about the
silage pile covering effort. It felt like being home.” Todd Van Holland, a veterinary assistant at Sioux Center Veterinary Clinic, has been volunteering for the pile covering crew for the past ve years. “We will cover 25 to 30 silage piles each fall,” Van Holland said. “The size of the piles range from 20,000 tons up to 70,000 tons. One of our larger
dairy farmer customers has a stockpile of 15,000 tires and tire sidewalls.” Dr. Beau Bosma a veterinarian at Central Veterinary Clinic in Sioux Center, is another volunteer who helps with the church’s tire carrying and tarp pulling efforts. “The vast majority of our customers are dairy farmers,” Bosma said. “But we also do a Turn to VOLUNTEERS | Page 3

Some of our volunteers don’t want to drive to the farm where we are covering a pile, so one of our older guys will drive them there in the church’s bus.” Some volunteers bring more than just themselves. There are a few church members who will bring a loader or another piece of equipment to the pile covering. Over the past couple years, the church has purchased a pair of Tire Gators to make moving tires faster and more efcient. Farmers are charged for the silage pile covering service based on a per-ton scale for the larger piles. few beef operations. Some of the beef operators put up piles of chopped ear corn, which happens later in the fall. Our pile covering season is usually a little over a month long.” The crews that cover the piles usually consist of 40 to 50 volunteers, but can sometimes reach over 100, Bosma said. “We often have entire families, including little kids, come out to help cover a pile,” Bosma said. With each silage pile taking about three hours to cover, they take all the help they can get. “We have a job for everyone who wants to help,” Van Holland said. “The older ladies in our church obviously can’t carry tires up the pile, but they can make bars and sandwiches to feed the crew. FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – The years 1987 and 1991 were not only when the Minnesota Twins won the World Series, but they were also the years the Skibas provided their Jerseys for the showcase herd at the Minnesota State Fair. “We like the Twins, so it was a fun coincidence for us,” Kathy Skiba said. Although the Twins may not make the World Series this year, the Skibas provided Jerseys for the showcase herd at the Minnesota State Fair for the third time. Dave and Kathy Skiba, their son and daughterin-law, Patrick and Jennifer, their children, Peter, 11, and Abigail, 7, milk 160 cows in Isanti County near Cambridge, Minn.. Their son and daughterin-law, Christopher and Melissa, and their children, Meghan, 20, Caleb, 17, and Victoria, 14,
help when they are able. “It’s an opportunity for us to share the dairy message with thousands of consumers about the care farmers provide to their animals and the products they produce,” Kathy said. “That’s why we thought we should do it again.” Since it was the Jersey’s year in the seven-year rotation, the Skibas were asked to provide the cows for this year’s showcase herd during the annual all breeds convention. “We talked with our kids to see if they would work with us,” Dave said. “It takes a lot to make things run smoothly here and at home. They were excited about it, and wanted to do it.” With everyone on board, nding help for the state fair was easy. They had their children and grandchildren helping and their neighbor, Steve Kruse. Dave agreed. “Without the kids, we wouldn’t have done this,” he said. With help lined up, the Skibas had to nd the 16 cows to go. “We started with a group of 30 cows that had been shown before,” Kathy said. “Those cows were halter broke and had good personalities both in the parlor and with people.” But, they were not their most elite show cows. “We brought our working girls,” Dave said. They also had to choose one calf to bring. “We chose a bull calf,” Kathy said. “We kept feeding him on the bottle so people could see that.” Once the cows were chosen, the Skibas transitioned their diet for the state fair. “We feed TMR on our farm, but we didn’t at the fair,” Kathy said. The Skibas worked with their nutritionist to come up with their fair diet of beet pulp, cracked corn, protein pellet package and dry hay. “We started feeding more
TMR at rst but slowly cut back and fed more of the fair diet,” Dave said. “They’ve been doing quite well on it.” The Skibas purchased shavings for bedding at the fair. “It saved us a lot of hassle hauling bedding from home,” Dave said. With limited space, the Skibas stored their feed and extra bedding in the basement of the barns. “It made the display look neater for the public,” Dave said. Kathy said. “The parlor staff was very helpful, too.â€? While Dave and Kathy managed things at the fair, Patrick and Jennifer did chores at home. “We were short staffed at home, and they took on the workload there,â€? Dave said. “We traded off to help each other out as much as we could.â€? Once morning chores were ďƒžnished, three to four cows at a time were used for each daily milking demonstration at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m., along with the daily hand milking demonstrations at 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m. “Our cows were milked more frequently than normal,â€? Kathy said. “That was better for them, especially here.â€? The cows were also highlighted in media interviews in and out of the barns.

“We had several media interviews scheduled. We either brought a cow to them, or they came to the barns,� Kathy said. “It was pretty fun.� Even though they were busy with the showcase herd, they also brought seven more heifers and cows for the four days of open class. “We stalled them as close to the showcase herd as we could,� Dave said. “That made chores easier.� With 4-H, open class and FFA rotating cattle during the 12 days, the Skibas pulled everything out overnight twice for barn crews to clean between encampments and redid everything early the next morning to be ready for the
public. “We put plastic over the lattice board with the name tags, moved our equipment over by the staging area near the parlor and put the cows outside for the hold over after they were fed and milked,� Kathy said. “We started setting things back up around 3 a.m., and had everything ready by 6:30.� Regardless of the crazy schedule, being the showcase herd provided the Skibas with the opportunity to educate the public. “We got so many good questions we could answer for the public,� Kathy said. “We were asked about brown cows and chocolate milk, but most conversations we had with people revolved around how cows have to calve to start producing milk and that meat and milk come from cows. It really shed light on how far removed people are from agriculture.� The Skibas were also asked about antibiotics. “That’s a big one,� Dave said. “We informed them that all milk and meat is antibiotic free. We tried to correct those misconceptions.� Being part of the Moo Booth allowed the Skibas to also address the family aspect of dairy farming. “One of the questions the Moo Booth quiz has is the percent of family owned dairy farms,� Kathy said. “People mostly thought it was the lowest instead of the 98 percent it actually is. We told them that just because there is an LLC or LLP in the name doesn’t mean it isn’t family owned.� Looking ahead seven years, the Skibas are unsure if they will be the showcase herd again. “That will be up to the kids,� Dave said. But, the Skibas are proud to be promoting the dairy industry with their family as the showcase herd for the third time. “We have fun with it and enjoy visiting with people,� Dave said. “We like promoting the dairy industry, and we’re proud that our family wants to be a part of what we do here.�

Think outside the bunk Non-nutritional factors, diet equally important for transition cows By Brittany Olson

TAYLORS FALLS, Minn. – For dairy cows, the weeks leading up to and following calving is a stressful time. In addition to having their bodies’ demands change wildly, their state of being is much more nicky as they return to the milking string after dryoff and calving. “Key components of transition cow management are nutritional management – especially feed intakes and control of macrominerals, anionic salts, energy and metabolizable protein – and non-nutritional management,” said Cornell University dairy management professor Dr. Tom Overton on Aug. 24 during a dairy management seminar in Taylors Falls, Minn. Nutrition is a large piece of the puzzle for a cow making the transition back to milking a smooth one. It’s important to keep tabs on a dry cow’s feed intake – particularly macrominerals like calcium and energy sources like corn; however, the environment in which these activities take place also plays a critical role in helping a cow navigate the ups and downs of calving and returning to the milking string. Overton identied non-nutritional management practices that minimize the impact environmental stressors have on a cow’s physiology and dry matter intake (DMI). “The ve biggest potential stressors for transition cows are overcrowding, commingling of cows and heifers, excessive number of pen changes, heat stress, and overall cow comfort and hygiene,” Overton said. Providing a clean, comfortable and sanitary environment for calving to take place, as well as day-to-day housing, and ensuring optimum cow comfort is essential to post-fresh cow care. Anything detrimental to dry matter intake, milk production,or cow comfort can be considered a stressor. For example, overcrowding topped Overton’s list of non-nutritional stressors. If a cow spends more time standing around or pacing the alley because she can’t gain access to the feedbunk or a stall where she can lie down, she becomes more vulnerable to stress. “Stocking density should be given the most attention,” Overton said. Overton recommended each pen contain at least 30 inches of feedbunk space per cow and that 80 percent of stalls be occupied. He referred to a study done by Dr. Nigel Cook, D.V.M., at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 2004 comparing two 1,600-cow herds, one at 80 percent stocking density and the other at 120 percent, and the impact on milk production measured in kilograms per deciliter (kg/d). “Compared to the herd at 120 percent stocking density, there was a 2.95 kg/d increase in milk during the rst 83 days in milk for the herd at 80 percent,” Overton said. In addition, for every 10 percent increase in stocking density above 80 percent, milk production declined by 0.73 kg/d. Keeping a close eye on social hierarchies within the herd was discussed at great length. And mixing heifers and cows was also identied as an area of improvement for many herds. While Overton said there was less research
in this aspect of transition cow care, he referred to a 2003 study from Universidad de Zulia in Venezuela where it was concluded that rst-calf heifers showed a spike in cortisol, a stress-marker hormone, when introduced to a commingled environment. “Heifers tend to eat less and more slowly than cows in their second lactation or greater, and are more likely to be pushed around by older cows as well,” Overton said. Heat stress was next on the docket for discussion. A 2012 study by the University of Florida featured in the Journal of Dairy Science addressed the impact of heat stress in late-gestation cows and its effects on growth and immunity in those calves. According to the study’s ndings, cows that hadn’t been cooled properly during the latter days of gestation delivered calves that weighed an average of 36.5 kilograms, or 80.5 pounds. However, calves born from dams who had been cooled adequately during the close-up period weighed nearly 94 pounds on average. In addition, those calves continued to outperform animals whose dams experienced heat stress during pregnancy. Calves in the cooled group weighed nearly 30 pounds more at weaning than the heat stress group at 173 pounds compared to 145 pounds, and stood over one centimeter taller at the withers by the time they were weaned. To combat stressors, Overton spoke of the pros and cons of monitoring both at the cow and herd levels to identify and contain potential issues before they snowball out of control. While cow-level monitoring addresses needs unique to the animal in question, herdlevel observation can be a bit tricky. “Herd-level monitoring should be a periodic evaluation of a representative sample of cows in a window of interest,” Overton said. By using one representative group as the so-called barometer of the herd, large studies involving numerous herds have given the dairy industry the ability to make decisions based on links and correlations noted during those experiments. However, as a result of a large body of research, the dairy industry operates on averages, according to Overton, and there are challenges in accounting for increased variations. Overton’s recommendations for herd-level observation, particularly in larger herds, included the use of 15 to 20 randomly chosen animals to serve as a sample to gauge the well-being of their herd mates, and conducting weekly check-ins through the use of urine and fecal samples, as well as during periods of change, including the 14 days leading up to and following calving. “Electronic monitoring technologies have been able to tell us what we can’t always see, particularly the use of rumination collars,” Overton said. To conclude his presentation, Overton identied the top 10 things dairy producers can do to ensure transition cows are as healthy and productive as can be. While nutritional management – managing macromineral, energy and protein consumption – and consistently timed, balanced feedings made up half of the picture, non-nutritional care through supervision of social hierarchies, climate control and clean, comfortable housing are of equal importance in helping a fresh cow be her best.

Make the most of manure nutrients this fall
Manure is a very important nutrient resource. With proper management, it can also improve soil health by suppling nutrients to microorganisms and improving water inltration and retention by increasing the amount of organic matter in the soil. But before heading to the elds and applying manure this fall, consider submitting a manure sample. “If you don’t test, you won’t know the value of the nutrients you’re applying,” said Dr. Jim Friedericks, outreach and education advisor. Friedericks explains although there are “general book values” on the nutrient content of manure, there are many factors that affect the numbers, including animal species, rations, production management and facility type. Even the bedding type makes a difference. The type of storage, handling and agitation system can all move numbers as well. “Two neighboring barns with the same design and management could even have a wide variation of nutrients in their manure,” he said. “It’s important to test to see exactly what you have.” The minimum recommendation suggests testing for total N, P, and K along with moisture, and Friedericks says that testing for ammonium (NH4) can be very useful as well. He explained ammonium is a measure of the amount of immediately available N. “The ammonium levels can help determine how to best apply and treat your manure. For example, manure from a swine pit with high ammonium levels should only be injected into the soil when soil temperatures are at 50 degrees (at 4-inch depth) and cooling, which will slow the denitrication process. Manure with low ammonium
content can be broadcast with fewer risks. In general, if ammonium numbers are high the manure should be incorporated into the soil quickly.” Manage manure as a crop nutrient resource. Manure application rates should be based on soil testing and the crop fertilization requirements of your next crop. Typically on most farms with a manure management plan, there will be an N or P limit that must be followed. Friedericks also says it is benecial to know about “manure nutrient availability” when calculating application rates. Some portion of the nutrients cannot be utilized by the plant immediately. For example, in dairy manure, only 30 to 50 percent of the nitrogen and 80 to 100 percent the phosphorous can be used by the growing crops right away. “Take the nutrient availability into account when determining application rates,” he said. Most states have developed guidelines for manure nutrient availability. The Stockmanship sessions teach cattle handling methods that improve animal movement and cattle performance by reducing the stress on livestock. Noffsinger bases his presentation on four simple principles of cattle behavior; cattle want to see you, go around you, be with other cattle, and can only process one thought at a time. He will also demonstrate low stress cattle handling methods that can be used whether gathering from the pasture or processing through corrals. In addition to animal handling, Doug Bear from the Iowa Beef Industry Council will also be certifying participants in the BQA program. BQA is the foundation for the Tyson FarmCheck program which will be required for all who sell cattle to Tyson in 2017. The rst workshop will be held September 19 at the NICC Beef Center at Calmar starting at 12:30 p.m., and the second workshop will be at the Wyoming Fairgrounds in Wyoming, starting at 6 p.m. The third session will be Sept. 20, at 9 a.m. at the Clinton County fairgrounds in DeWitt. The Calmar and DeWitt sessions are open to any beef producers in the area, but the Wyoming session is only open to members of the Jones County Cattlemen Association. All sessions are free but advance registration is requested to ensure adequate resource materials. Light refreshments will be provided but there will not be a meal provided. May mailbox prices down in most areas Wisconsin, Minnesota both at $14.71, Iowa at $14.42 By Ron Johnson

MINNEAPOLIS – This past May was not a good month for mailbox milk prices. They fell in 18 of the 19 reporting areas, according to the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). The average decrease over all reporting areas was 44 cents. Wisconsin took the hardest hit. In the Badger State, the May price dropped 81 cents per hundredweight and ended at $14.71. That price was off $2.94 from May of 2015. The May price also dropped 75 cents in Minnesota. In the Gopher State, it also nished at $14.71, compared to $15.46 in April. A year earlier, the Minnesota May average stood at $15.46. Iowa followed the downward trend. The May average in the Hawkeye State fell 69 cents, to end at $14.42. A year earlier, it stood at $16.72. The only region to record an increase from April was southern Missouri. There, the price rose all of one penny, to hit $14.19. Farmers in the New England States – Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont – got the highest May mailbox price, $15.97. That was a drop of 33 cents from April. Florida saw the second-highest May mailbox price of $15.30. That was down 39 cents from April. The only other region to crack the

$15 mark was the Appalachian States – Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Their May average came in at $15.06, down a nickel from the month before. Farmers in Ohio averaged $14.81 for their May milk. That was down 42 cents from April. In eastern Pennsylvania, the average was just a penny less. That $14.80 was off 20 cents from April. New York dairy producers received the next-highest May average: $14.77. That was a 29-cent dip from the month before. Farmers in Indiana got an average of $14.68 for their May milk. That was a slide of 44 cents from April. In Illinois, the mailbox price for May was $14.62, down 73 cents. Western Pennsylvania recorded the nexthighest price, $14.56, down 50 cents from April. The Southeast States – Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi – ranked next at $14.48. That was down 20 cents from the month before. Oregon and Washington – the Northwest States – averaged $14.14 in May, a drop of 42 cents from April. Dairy farmers in western Texas got a May mailbox average of $13.63. That was down 53 cents. The May average was just one cent lower in the Corn Belt States. Farmers in Kansas, Nebraska and northern Missouri got $13.62 for their May milk. In Michigan, Wolverine State dairy farmers were paid a May mailbox average of $12.90. That was a decrease of 49 cents from April.

The Mailbox Price for all Federal order areas combined was $14.37
The lowest price among the federal milk marketing orders once again was paid in the Land of Enchantment. Farmers in New Mexico received an average price of $12.88 in May, down from $13.29 the month before. California, not a part of the federal milk marketing order system, saw a May average of $12.58. That was down from $13.27 in April. Across all federal milk order areas, the May mailbox average was $14.37, down 52 cents from April, and down $2.23 per from the May 2015 average. This past May, the U.S. average
butterfat test was 3.73 percent, while the average protein test was 3.09 percent. Other solids in the milk averaged 5.76 percent. Mailbox prices are the actual, net amounts farmers see on the checks in their mailboxes. The AMS collects these prices through its federal milk order market administrator ofces. Mailbox prices include all payments farmers got for milk they sold. These prices also reect all deductions associated with marketing that milk. There’s no adjustment to 3.5 percent butterfat, so mailbox prices reect the actual test of the milk.

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – For the past two years, the Leiding twins have been in rst and fth place of the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase. Last year, Kayla Leiding, 19, took top honors while Haely, placed fth. But this year, they ipped places with Haely placing rst earning a $4,000 scholarship and Kayla in the fth spot receiving a $2,000 scholarship during the eighth annual Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase on Aug. 28 in the AgStar Arena at the Minnesota State Fair in Falcon Heights, Minn. Haely and Kayla are the daughters of Stacy and Todd Leiding who milk 70 cows near Fountain, Minn. “We’re so close,” Haely said of her relationship with Kayla. “It’s going to be so neat to look back on this 10 years from now and say, ‘Do you remember that one year you won the showcase and I won it the next year?’”
The Leidings have been actively involved in the 4-H dairy project since the start and have been successful in dairy judging, dairy bowl and showing their dairy animals at numerous shows each year. “We’ve done a lot of the same things and shared a lot of these special moments together in the dairy project,” Kayla said. With 23 other 4-Hers, the Leiding sisters waited anxiously to nd out where they placed. “It’s always nerve wracking and exciting when the coordinators walk back and forth looking at you as you wait for your name to be called,” Kayla said. Kayla was named fth, and soon it was only Haely left standing as the winner. “As soon as they announced second place, I hugged my calf,” she said. “It’s neat to be honored for my hard work, dedication and involvement in the project over the years.” Their nal year in 4-H will be nished on a high note in the same fashion as always – together. “It’s bittersweet,” Haely said. Kayla agreed. “It’s cool to be honored together like this again,” Kayla said. “I was so excited for Haely. She had such a good day at the show

Lukas Pierson, 16, placed sixth in the dairy showcase earning a $1,800 scholarship, while his brother, Seth Pierson, 14, ranked seventh and received a $1,700 scholarship. The brothers were two of four dairy exhibitors from their county at this year’s Minnesota State Fair. They raise 70 dairy heifers with their parents, Anders and Sheila, in Watonwan County near Buttereld, Minn. “Five years ago, no one knew Watonwan County, but the last couple of years we’ve come on the map with our success in dairy judging, dairy bowl, dairy showcase and the show ring at the state fair,” Lukas said. Both brothers have been actively involved in each of those programs, earning Lukas a spot in the dairy showcase for the last two years and Seth a spot in the showcase for the rst time this year. “It was cool that we placed so high right next to each other,” Lukas said. For Seth, it was an honor just to be in the showcase. “I didn’t expect to make it that far my rst year in it,” he said. “There are a lot of big names and active 4-Hers. To be up that far with my brother is pretty cool.” With such an interest in dairy, the boys are taking their scholarship funds and using it to purchase cattle for next year. “I did that last year, too,” Lukas said. “We’re planning on starting milking with our family again. We’re going to take over and focus on genetics.” Kendra Waldenberger also had a good rst year in the 4-H showcase. The 15-yearold daughter of Kenneth and Heidi Waldenberger owns a few cattle and leases from dairy farmers Matt and Mark Klug in Houston County near Spring Grove, Minn. Waldenberger placed second earning a $3,500 scholarship. “I never thought I would get that high up in the rankings my rst year out,” she said. “My heart was beating so hard, I couldn’t hear. It’s such an honor.” Her mother, Heidi, was equally excited for her daughter. “She’s had an amazing show year,” she said. “I never dreamed she would do all of this.”
Although she does not live on a dairy farm, being in the 4-H project has brought a love for the dairy industry to Waldenberger’s life with hopes of becoming a Houston County Dairy Princess and one day, a dairy scientist focusing on genetics. “It’s so nice to have a program like this where people in the dairy community donate so much to give back to the dairy youth,” Kendra said. The Nuhn Lagoon Crawler is an amphibious vehicle designed for agitating lagoons. The wheels are able to drop down, giving the vehicle roughly 5 feet of ground clearance. The unit then drives itself into a lagoon, where it turns into an agitation boat. When in the lagoon, the Lagoon Crawler is powered by a quad port, Nuhn Header Series manure pump. 10000+GPM volumes are used to maneuver the pontoon through the lagoon and agitate the solids from the bottom. Dec. 1, 2016 is deadline to apply for Fred Stout Experience awards Persons who have a strong desire to pursue a career in managing and/or marketing Registered Jersey™ cattle are encouraged to apply for the 2016 Fred Stout Experience awards. Awards will be made for two paid internships, one with Jersey Marketing Service, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and the other an on-farm, customized experience on a Jersey dairy operation. The awards pay for housing, travel and related activities required by the cooperating employer up to the maximum amount of the scholarship award. Applicants must have completed their high school education. To apply, submit a one-page résumé listing previous work experience, skills and other qualications, plus a separate cover letter stating your ambitions, goals and career aspirations, including plans for achieving them. The letter must also explain how and why the Fred Stout Experience will be of benet in achieving future goals. A summary of involvement with and interest in Registered Jersey™ cattle is required. Specify which experience (marketing internship, on-farm internship) is preferred, or indicate if you are interested in both opportunities. Two letters of support are required, one from an active breeder of Registered Jersey™ cattle, excluding immediate family members; and the other from a teacher, mentor or past employer. These must be mailed directly by the supporters to the AJCA ofce. Applications and letters of support must be postmarked not later than Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016 and addressed to Fred Stout Experience, American Jersey Cattle Association, 6486 E. Wisconsin schools receive funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 To kick off the 2016-2017 school year, 115 Wisconsin schools have been chosen to receive funds from Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) for Fuel Up to Play 60 initiatives. Schools were selected from across the state to help them jump-start and sustain healthy nutrition and physical activity improvements. Wisconsin schools are eligible to receive up to $1,000 to help them increase awareness of and access to nutrient-rich foods and physical activity opportunities for students. Funding for this competitive program is provided by WMMB through Wisconsin’s dairy farm families. Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council (NDC) and the National Football League (NFL), with additional partnership support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program encourages kids to consume nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains) and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Funds for Fuel Up to Play 60 provide support for a variety of activities and tools, such as food service materials and taste-testing supplies, nutrition and physical education equipment. More than 1,500 schools in Wisconsin are participating in Fuel Up to Play 60. Fuel Up to Play 60 is designed to engage and empower youth to take action for their own health by implementing long-term, positive changes for themselves and their schools. “Fuel Up to Play 60 has really taken off in Wisconsin. Wellness champions and students around the state have embraced the program and these funds will help many of the participating schools to do even more,” said Laura Wilford, Director, Wisconsin Dairy Council. More than 70,000 schools across the country participate in FUTP60. These Wisconsin schools were selected to receive over $80,000 from the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board on behalf of Wisconsin’s dairy farm families this school year. Do you have a plan? By Emily Wilmes, University of Minnesota Extension Farms in Minnesota are as much about family as they are about business. However, at the end of the day, your farm is still a business, and decisions need to be made with that in mind. Have you ever created a business plan for your farm? A business plan is a formal statement of business goals, reasons they are attainable, and plans for reaching them. It may also contain background information about the organization attempting to reach those goals. We actually make program business plans in Extension, and I nd them incredibly useful! It’s nice to have something I can go back to that will tell me what the goals are and what the plan is to achieve them. Making a business plan can be a group effort, and it doesn’t have to be a large, daunting task. There is also a GREAT resource for creating a business plan from the University of Minnesota. The best part is, it’s free. It’s called AgPlan, and you can access it online at https://agplan.umn.edu. I have used AgPlan on multiple occasions and it is a great tool. After high school, he attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa where he earned a degree in agriculture with an emphasis on animal science. Casey serves the Sioux Falls region. Here is what he has to say about his job: Reproduction is my strong suit. After college, I spent 2 years working for a large AI company in California. This gave me a lot of knowledge and experience with a wide variety of reproductive issues. North American Manure Expo coming to South Dakota in 2018 South Dakota State University and SDSU Extension are pleased to announce South Dakota was recently selected to host the 2018 North American Manure Expo. 2018 North American Manure Expo is a traveling show that combines three attractions into one event, consisting of: 1) Industry trade show; 2) Manure technology demonstrations and tours; 3) Educational sessions and events. “The North American Manure Expo will also provide an opportunity to showcase our state’s feeding industry and its ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship,â€? said David Kringen, SDSU Extension Water Resources Field Specialist. History of the North American Manure Expo In early 2001, the University of Wisconsin was approached by a number of custom manure applicators in their region requesting a show that would provide side-byside comparisons of agitation and application equipment to help determine what best ďƒžt their individual needs. From this request came the ďƒžrst Manure Expo, which was held near Prairie Du Sac, Wis., in August 2001. The ďƒžrst event proved to be very successful and additional shows were requested for 2003. Growing attendance meant that expansion was needed and it was decided at that time to take the show on the road as well. The Expo has grown to be an annual event and has been hosted by Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Canada and, in 2018, South Dakota. 2018 Expo Event The North American Manure Expo can expect to bring together a number of different industry and agency personnel including, but are not limited to: 1) Livestock producers in the dairy, beef, pork, and poultry industries; 2) Custom manure handlers, applicators, and brokers; 3) Crop consultants and nutrient management specialists; 4) Agricultural support industry; and 5) Extension and agency personnel. SDSU Extension is currently evaluating a number of site locations in southeast South Dakota along the Interstate-29 corridor that can accommodate a potential audience of 1,000+ attendees over a two-day event. SDSU Extension has also taken a regional approach in the planning and development of the 2018 Expo by inviting the cooperation of the other members of the I-29 Consortium of Universities from the neighboring states of North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota.
