Focusing on efciency Meadow Star Dairy calls Kandiyohi County home

PENNOCK, Minn. – After 20 years, Riverview Dairy LLP has built a simple, yet state-ofthe-art dairy.

“We wanted a facility that made sense,” said Kevin Wulf, an owner of Riverview LLP. “It’s nothing fancy or special.

We’re really excited about it.”

The new 120-acre Meadow Star Dairy, is home to 8,000 milking cows and 500 dry cows, predominantly Jerseys, and

has been up and running for 10 months in Kandiyohi County near Pennock, Minn.

The 8,000 cows are milked twice per day in the 106-stall rotary parlor.

“It takes 6.5 minutes to make one complete rotation,” said Tom Walsh of Riverview LLP. “Our goal is to get 650 cows milked per hour.”

Milking taking 11 hours to complete with a one-hour cleaning cycle in between each milking.

Each person has a different position. Position one sprays the teats with disinfectants and strips the teats; position two wipes the disinfectant from the teats; position three attaches the milking unit and position ve post dips and removes the milking unit. Position four is a oating employee who reattaches the units as needed, cleans the parlor, or lls in for another position.

“They rotate positions every hour,” Wulf said.

The milk rst travels through a plate cooler.

“We recycle that cold water

by using it to water the cows,” Walsh said.

After being cooled, the milk is pumped directly into the tanker trucks.

“The tankers are inside,” Wulf said. “It keeps them out of the elements, and is more efcient.”

Each day, eight tanker trucks of milk – the equivalent of 450,000 pounds of milk – go to First District Association in Litcheld, Minn.

“We also have a silo that holds a day’s worth of milk in case of bad weather and the trucks can’t get through,” Wulf said.

During milking, two employees move cows to the parlor and do stall maintenance in the 1,400- by 600-foot cross-ventilated freestall barn.

The stalls in the barn have rubber mats bedded with manure solids.

“Sand is a good option, too, but we produce manure here on site,” Wulf said about why they chose to use manure solids.

“We’re adding value to the manure we already have.”

Walsh agreed.

“We’ve tried different things at other farms since we’re like a living, breathing experiment station,” he said. “Solids

are the best t for us in terms of cow comfort and economics.”

To ensure clean, dry stalls, the employees at Meadow Star keep the stalls well groomed by scraping the wet spots off the stalls twice a day while the cows are in the parlor.

“Since we use the rubber mats instead of deep bedded stalls and have a cross-ventilated barn, the solids dry out well.

It all helps,” Walsh said.

Although winter is more challenging to keep the solids as dry, Walsh said their somatic cell count (SCC) remained below 100,000 consistently.

“That’s the ultimate measuring tool,” he said.

Instead of using a skidloader to scrape the alleyways and push the manure into a ume, Meadow Star uses a manure vacuum.

“It works really slick,” Wulf said.

The vacuum sucks the manure up, and once it is full, it

dumps the manure into the day pit, which is under the same roof as the freestall barn.

From the day pit, the manure is pumped up to the seven separators, and those solids are added to the stalls three times a week.

“All the liquid manure is stored in synthetically covered lagoons,” Wulf said.

While the milking herd is on the east side of the barn, the dry and close up cows, hospital cows and fresh cows are in freestalls on the west end of the barn.

“We have a large alleyway physically separating the two groups,” Wulf said.

The cows in the hospital and fresh group are milked in a single-16 parallel parlor on the west side of the facility.

“We pasteurize and freeze all of our colostrum so we have it on hand,” Wulf said.

No matter which group the cows are in, they are fed at least once a day with a ration consisting of corn silage, haylage, dry corn, soybean meal, dried distillers grain, corn gluten meal, straw, liquid whey and a mineral pack.

“Some pens are fed twice a day,” Walsh said. “We feed for zero weigh back and we want cows to have access to feed at all times.”

Since the farm does not own land, most of the feed for the ration is purchased from local farmers within a ve-mile radius of the farm. The dairy utilizes 4,500 acres of corn silage and 1,500 acres in alfalfa for haylage.

“We also purchase our ethanol by-products from local ethanol plants,” Walsh said. “It’s very local.”

Beyond the feed, Meadow Star provides liquid manure to local farmers on 5,500 acres.

“This creates an opportunity and benets 15 local farmers,” Walsh said.

While constructing the facility in the spring of 2015, Riverview started with the setup at East Dublin Dairy and made a few modications.

One of those modications was keeping everything under one roof, including the manure separation system.

They also went from having 10 overhead doors in the barn to having two, allowing for less maintenance.

Another change was having one skidloader on site.

“It’s minimizing repair costs,” Walsh said. “It also ties in with our BE SAFE program by having less moving pieces.”

Unlike other sites, Meadow Star has the hospital area on one side of the barn instead of the center.

“This way with the cross ventilation, we maximize airow throughout the entire barn,” Wulf said.

Two other features Meadow Star used were plexiglass siding to create more natural light in the barn and LED lights.

“We wanted to be more energy efcient,” Walsh said. “The lights in certain rooms are motion detected to conserve energy.”

All these changes and others have created more efciency at Meadow Star Dairy.

“They’re basic changes but they make a huge difference,” Wulf said. “It all boils down to cow comfort, employee safety and efciency, and not doing one at the expense of the other.”

With everything up and running, Walsh is happy with how it turned out.

“We’re excited to open up the farm to scheduled tours and promote agriculture and show that small, medium or large, animal agriculture is doing the right thing,” Walsh said.

But most of all, Riverview is glad for all the support they received to make it happen.

“We had a very supportive environment to work and grow with,” Wulf said.

“We’re very appreciative and thankful for the community working with us to get this off the ground.”

“You can tell it’s working,” Leslie said. “Now, cows are going into the parlor so much easier and are leaving the parlor without trampling each other.”

They also prepped the bedded pack barn.

“The cows are really comfortable in there,” Leslie said.

With everything ready, the Roses milked for the rst time in seven years in April 2011.

“It felt good to get back into it. We started milking eight cows for the rst month since we had a lot that were springing,” Leslie said. “We found a few more cows to buy and got up to 35 cows shortly.”

However, dairy farming was not how they left it seven years before.

“It was surprising how things had changed,” Leslie said. “There were certain medications we were able to use on the cows before that were no longer allowed for use on dairy cattle. But, we picked up on it quick.”

Over the course of the next few years, the Roses made several improvements to their operation including putting up a new building for the youngstock and a hoop barn to put the calf hutches under.

“The yard has changed quite a bit,” Leslie said.

They also purchased the 200 acres of land they had been renting out of their 350 total acres.

“Michael actually bought 100 of those acres for himself,” Leslie said.

Most of those 350 acres are now planted in corn.

“We use a lot of it for silage and

earlage,” Leslie said. “The rest is cash cropped.”

They also have 38 acres in oats and eight acres in alfalfa.

“We buy most of our hay,” Leslie said.

The nal changes came after Michael left his part-time job in town this past spring.

“I would get up to milk cows, go to work, come home and milk cows again,” Michael said. “I was tired of running back and forth. I didn’t feel like I was getting much accomplished. It was getting old fast.”

The rst thing the family did was add 63 feet onto their bedded pack barn before purchasing 30 more cows, bringing their herd up to 60 cows.

Since those cows came from a farm that fed TMR, the Roses purchased a TMR mixer to feed their entire herd.

“Our cows went down on production for the rst month, but started coming up on production right after,” Leslie said. “They’ve been doing well ever since.”

With so many projects complete, the Roses are now turning three-quarters of the bedded back barn into a freestall barn.

“I liked the idea of a freestall barn,” Michael said.

Although Leslie was a little hesitant, he is seeing the potential for improvements by making this change.

“The bedded pack takes a lot of bedding, but by switching to sand for the freestalls, I hope it frees up some funds,” he said. “We’re also hoping to help lower our somatic cell count.”

“It’s not washed sand, so we will see,” Michael said. “But there is a place eight miles away that sells it, so we wouldn’t have to ship it far.”

With nearly ve years under their belts, Leslie and Michael have their routine down.

Michael mixes feed, feeds the cows and youngstock. He is also in charge of the breeding.

“He’s very dedicated and continues to work at it,” Leslie said.

When breeding his family’s herd, Michael looks for bulls that are high in milk production, feet and legs, and udder composite. But his main focus is somatic cell count.

“It ties in with health traits, “ Michael said. “A good SCC means healthier cows, which creates more milk.”

When it comes to milking cows and eldwork, Leslie and Michael both take on the responsibility.

“We work together,” Michael said.

Now, the Roses are putting a plan together to transition the farm over to Michael someday.

“It’s tough because there are a lot of things you never think about that you have to do,” Leslie said. “But we’re doing it.”

Looking ahead, the Roses are hoping to obtain more land and look at the potential of robots ve to 10 years from now.

“We’ll see what happens,” Michael said.

Until then, Michael and Leslie are enjoying working together.

“We get along really well and make a good team,” Michael said.

And for Leslie, being able to dairy farm again alongside one his sons is what he has always wanted.

“It’s nice to have the barn full again.

I enjoy it. It’s what I do,” Leslie said.

“It’s nice we can work together and keep the farm going.”

UW-Extension explains changes to over-the-counter feed medications

“All of these feed drugs, whether alone or in a combination, will require a VFD as of the rst of the year,” Mills-Lloyd said.

Established drugs such as penicillin, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline are just a few of the antibiotics switching to VFD status. An updated list, which continues to change, can be found at http://www.fda.gov/Animal Veterinary/DevelopmentApprovalProcess/ucm071807.htm.

Mills-Lloyd urged farmers to closely follow the guidance of their veterinarians. Written VFDs are specic to the group of animals receiving the treatment for a given period of time as directed by the veterinarian. Administering antibiotics extralabel or to other animals not listed on the VFD could lead to lasting consequences down the road.

“The vet is the one giving the written prescription and you must follow it. You have to think that, if the cows are your livelihood, they’re the vet’s livelihood, too,” Mills-Lloyd said.

“Abusing a VFD could hurt their credentials as a veterinarian as well as your own reliability as a client.”

After a VFD is prescribed to a farm, it is the farmer’s responsibility to keep record of it on le for a minimum of two years. Records can be stored electronically or as hard copy,

BLAIR, Wis. – As agriculture industries continue to face a new realm of consumer concerns, new guidelines have risen that will ultimately result in changes to on-farm routines.

Starting Jan. 1, farmers will have to change how they use and access certain feed- and water-based antibiotics.

To explain these changes, the Jackson County and Trempealeau County UWExtension Ofces called a joint area dairy meeting on Aug. 23 at the Blair Fire Hall in Blair, Wis. The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) will require a written or electronic statement issued by a licensed veterinarian in the course of their professional practice. A VFD grants a farmer permission to obtain and use VFD medications in animal feeds, but only for treating animals listed by the veterinarian. As of Jan. 1 of next year, a VFD will be required for many established drugs – and failure to comply could lead to lasting consequences for dairy farmers.

Sarah Mills-Lloyd, agriculture agent at UW-Extension Oconto County, said the VFD regulations come as a preventative measure.

“Are we, as producers, overusing antibiotics? Yes, maybe we are,” Mills-Lloyd said.

“The fact of the matter is, we are not currently developing anymore antibiotics for use in veterinary medicine, and it is SARAH MILLSǧLLOYD, UWǧEXTENSION important that we are cautious with those and it is just as important to keep rewe have readily available.”

South Dakota milk production up 5.9 percent July milk production in the top 23 producing states hit 16.8 billion pounds, up 1.4 percent from July 2015, according to USDA preliminary data. The 50-state total, at 17.9 billion pounds, was also up 1.4 percent. Revisions raised the original June estimate 9 million pounds to 16.7 billion pounds, up 1.6 percent from 2015.

July cow numbers in the 23 states totaled 8.65 million head, up 2,000 from June, 19,000 more than a year ago, and a nine year high, according to the Dairy and Food Market Analyst (DFMA). Output per cow was impacted by hot temperatures in the dairy regions but still averaged 1,946 pounds, up 24 pounds from a year ago and the highest for July since the series began in 2003.

California output, while below a year ago for the 20th consecutive month, is clawing its way back, down just 0.8 from 2015, despite 10,000 fewer cows and a 5 pound drop per cow. Wisconsin more than doubled California’s shortfall but was only up 2.1 percent from a year ago, following a 3.5 percent gain in June. Output per cow was up 45 pounds but cow numbers were down 2,000 head.

Idaho edged out New York in July for the Number 3 spot, up 3.7 percent from a year ago, thanks to a nice 45 pound gain per cow and 9,000 more cows. New York was up 4 percent, on a 75 pound per cow gain and a thousand more cows. Pennsylvania inched up 0.3 percent on a 5 pound gain per cow, and Minnesota was up 1.5 percent on a 20 pound gain per cow and 2,000 more cows South Dakota registered the biggest gain, up 5.9 percent, despite a 25 pound loss per cow. Cow numbers were up 8,000. Michigan was up 4.5 percent, thanks to 11,000 more cows and 40 pounds more per cow. New Mexico, still suffering from Winter Storm Goliath, was down 1.2 percent, on 13,000 fewer cows but is ghting back and saw output per cow jump 60 pounds. Texas was up 4.4 percent on a 45 pound gain per cow and 9,000 more cows than a year ago. Washington State was again unchanged. Output per cow was up 10 pounds but there were 1,000 fewer cows milked.

The report is generally viewed as bearish. HighGround Dairy warned in its analysis that “If the heat and poor Second Quarter on-farm margins could not disrupt milk ows, then higher milk prices and cheaper feed, ultimately leading to a better on-farm margin outlook should accelerate, not diminish output in the coming months,” adding that “While we fear the rosy margin outlook for dairy farmers will not last as Fourth Quarter approaches, today’s snapshot of the market offers producers zero incentive to make less milk.”

U.S. dairy farmers culled fewer cows in July than in June and compared to a year ago, according to USDA’s latest Livestock Slaughter report. An estimated 213,300 head were slaughtered under Federal inspection in the month, down 10,400 head from June and 25,300 head or 10.6 percent below July 2015. Culling in the January to July period totaled 1,662,600 head, down 32,700 head or 1.9 percent from 2015.

So, we have plenty of milk, plenty of cows, and we have plenty of dairy products. The Agriculture Department’s July Cold Storage report pegged U.S. butter stocks at 333.1 million pounds, up almost 5 million pounds or 2 percent from June, up 78.8 million pounds or 31 percent from July 2015, and the rst time since 2004 that stocks were higher at the end of July than they were in June, according to FC Stone.

Revisions added 2.1 million pounds to the June total.

71.95 million or 10 percent from a year ago. The June estimate was lowered 1.6 million pounds.

July’s total cheese inventory stood at 1.28 billion pounds, up 26 million pounds or 2 percent from June, and 11.5 million or 10 percent from July 2015. June’s total was revised lower by 1.3 million pounds.

The Cold Storage data sent shivers into the markets where cash block Cheddar cheese plunged to $1.7375 per pound Thursday. It inched back to $1.74 on Friday, down 12 1/2-cents on the week but 4 cents above a year ago. The barrels closed at $1.68, down 18 1/2-cents on the week and 8 cents above a year ago. Eighteen cars of block were traded on the week at the CME and three of barrel.

Dairy Market News (DMN) reports that Midwest cheese makers are “lling vats and running schedules as full as possible.” “After several weeks of decreases in milk intakes, some manufacturers feel the fall in production has begun to level off. A few contacts report being short on milk, but are able to nd spot loads when needed. Demand is mixed. Some market participants feel sales slowed some this week following several weeks of active orders outside of contracts.

Other manufacturers feel demand continues to grow ahead of the holidays.”

“Cheese curd sales continue to soar as the fair and carnival season continues. Inventories vary and widely depend on the variety of cheese. Cheddar and American cheese inventories are mostly long,” says DMN. “International inquiries remain light, and the market undertone is steady to rming.”

Western cheese makers are also trying to keep their production schedules full, according to DMN. “Although milk is generally available within the immediate area, a few processors have had to reach a little further.”

“Cheese marketers continue to report U.S. cheese is facing strong competition in international markets, mostly based on pricing differences. Industry inventories remain long for many varieties of cheese. Some contacts suggest cheese market prices need to be reset lower in order for signicant volumes of cheese to clear.”

Cheese sales have been holding rm. The August 19 DFMA reports that “During the four-week period ending July 10, retail natural cheese sales were up 3.4 percent (up 7.1 million pounds), according to scanner data. Since the start of the year, sales of natural cheese have increased 4.6 percent (up 69 million pounds).”

“Italian and American cheese varieties are performing particularly well,” says the DFMA, “With sales of mozzarella up 7.7 percent (up 12 million pounds) and Cheddar, up 4.0 percent (up 16 million pounds) year-to-date.”

Sales of processed cheese continue to struggle, however, down 5.0 percent from year-ago levels during the four week period (down 2.6 million pounds) and are down 5.8 percent year-to-date (down 20 million pounds).

The DFMA adds that “Promotions appear to be assisting sales. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released data which showed retail Cheddar cheese prices at $5.18 per pound during July, the lowest level in six and a half years. This is down 23 cents per pound since January and down 55 cents per pound from the highs experienced at retail in 2014.”

And, Uncle Sam is buying extra cheese in response to a request by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF). The Federation praised the “prompt action taken by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to purchase $20 million worth of cheese products (11 million pounds) to donate to food assistance programs.”

understand that the nation’s dairy producers are experiencing challenges due to market conditions and that food banks continue to see strong demand for assistance. This commodity purchase is part of a robust, comprehensive safety net that will help reduce a cheese surplus that is at a 30-year high while, at the same time, moving a high-protein food to the tables of those most in need.”

NMPF also praised USDA for extending the signup deadline for enrollment decisions in the dairy Margin Protection Program, stating that “Giving farmers until December 16 to adjust their coverage levels for calendar year 2017 will help increase the opportunity for farmers to utilize this crucial risk management tool.”

HighGround Dairy responded Tuesday; “We are shocked at the USDA’s reactive measures to excessive cheese inventories given the current price of CME block cheddar is at $1.8450 per pound and above the ve year average. Until the USDA releases details of how and when they plan to purchase cheese, we cannot determine the extent of the market reaction.” “There are over 1.2 billion pounds of cheese in storage and USDA plans to purchase 11 million.

We are unsure if this is U.S. government money well spent.”

One other criticism came from Paul Shapiro, Vice President of farm animal protection for the Humane Society of the U.S., who in a Hufngton Post column, likened it to a hypothetical government purchase of $20 million in “surplus Pepsi.”

The major press this week reported on the depressed milk prices U.S. dairy farmers are contending with. One story that garnered attention was from Arden Tewksbury, manager of the Progressive Agriculture Organization, a regional lobbying group in Pennsylvania. Tewksbury reported on an August 17 hearing where about 20 Pennsylvania Senators and House Members “saw something that in all probability they never witnessed before.”

“As they sat in their chairs on the stage at Ag Progress Days, they looked out into the audience and saw hundreds of dairy farmers and their supporters waiting to see what was going to happen at the hearing. After listening to several of their representatives makes reference to HB1265 (a Pennsylvania House Bill that addresses over-order premiums not paid to Pennsylvania dairy farmers) at least a half dozen Representatives illustrated their views on the non-controversial bill.”

It remains to be seen if any nancial benet actually accrues to dairy farmers from USDA’s action.

The Farm Bill’s latest dairy safety net leaves much to be desired. Hopefully, dairy’s political capital has not been just been spent.

Cash butter also suffered fallout from the Cold Storage data, slipping for the third week in a row, and closing the fourth Friday of August at $2.0575 per pound, down 13 1/4-cents on the week, lowest level since May 18, 2016, and 28 1/4-cents below a year ago. Nine cars traded hands on the week at the CME. Butter production was active this week in the Central region, according to DMN. “Industry contacts feel spot loads of cream are still available, but less obtainable than in recent weeks. A few manufacturers who were previously selling loads of cream are now holding on and processing all contracted cream loads in order to keep churns full. Other manufacturers are slowing the churns slightly.”

retail outlets. Some contacts speculate some of the recent spark in demand can be attributed to schools going back into session. Many manufacturers feel comfortable entering the busy season with current inventory.”

DMN adds that “Western butter makers are looking at anticipated Fourth Quarter butter needs to guide production. Many processors are making more print than bulk butter as they try to prepare for fall baking needs. Domestic print butter demand remains solid.

Cream availability is mixed, with some areas being tight and other areas having cream readily available.

A few processors continue to sell cream off as opposed to making butter. U.S. butter inventories are large, but industry contacts question how much of the stockpile is bulk or print butter, and how much is committed versus not committed to buyers.”

Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk closed Friday at 85 cents per pound, down three-quarter-cents on the week but 6 1/4-cents above a year ago, with 16 carloads exchanging hands on the week.

Conventional product sales totaled 3.56 billion pounds, down 1.8 percent from a year ago; organic products, at 213 million pounds, down 4 million pounds from their original report, still 6.7 percent above a year ago.

Organic represented about 5.6 percent of total sales for the month.

Other revisions came in total packaged uid milk sales for the rst half of 2016, now put at 24.46 billion pounds, up from the 20.68 billion originally reported, but down 0.5 percent from the same period a year ago. Year-to-date sales of conventional products, at 23.2 billion pounds, were down 0.8 percent; organic products, at 1.28 billion pounds, were up 5.6 percent.

Organic represented about 5.27 percent of total uid milk sales so far in 2016.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted two requests for export assistance this week to sell 152,119 pounds of Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese to customers in Asia. The product has been contracted for delivery through October and raises CWT’s 2016

exports to 32.31 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 8.37 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 21.3 million pounds of whole milk powder to 21 countries on ve continents.

In other global dairy news, FC Stone reported in its August 25 Insider Opening Bell that “Data shows Australian milk collections in July, the rst month of their new season, were well below that of last year.

Production in July was down 10.3 percent and 6 percent behind the three year average for July, with cumulative production for the calendar year to date down 5.2 percent on the same period last year.”

New Zealand-based Fonterra increased its 2016/17 forecast Farmgate Milk Price by 50 cents, to NZ$4.75 per kgMS, according to Stone’s report.

“Fonterra cited reduced milk production for most of the global dairy producing regions which is helping to bring the supply and demand balance back into line with each other. Fonterra also cite improving prices in recent GDT events but say the increasing NZD/USD exchange rate is offsetting some of these gains.”

U.S. Cheddar cheese prices have traded at a premium to Oceania Cheddar since April 2015. European Edam cheese prices haven’t been above U.S. Cheddar prices since 2014.

Lower Oceania and European cheese prices have resulted in greater U.S. cheese imports and fewer exports. Through July 2016, U.S. cheese imports totaled 253 million pounds, up nearly 11%, or 24.7 million pounds, compared to last year. Large year-over-year gains in cheese imports occurred in Q1 2016 when U.S. domestic cheese prices stood at a signiÀcant premium to global cheese prices. As U.S. cheese prices retreated in Q2, cheese imports also stabilized. July cheese imports reached 35.3 million pounds and were 9.7% lower than last year’s robust level. June imports at 33.9 million pounds trailed last year by 3.1%. Therefore, it is questionable whether 2016 U.S. cheese imports will surpass last year’s 440 million pounds if year-over-year imports continue to lag the prior year. In early

In addition, GDT results helped to close the gap between Oceania and U.S. dairy product prices. Should the current trend continue, parity between U.S. and international prices could provide support for 2017 CME dairy product futures.

September 2015, U.S. Cheddar averaged near $1.70/lb. and traded at a 60¢ and a 30¢ premium to European and Oceania cheeses, respectively. A year later, those premiums have been cut in half. Today’s CME Cheddar block price at $1.72 is just 30¢ higher than the average German Edam price and 15¢ more than Oceania Cheddar. In years when global cheese prices were more aligned, annual U.S. cheese imports were closer to 325 million pounds and cheese exports topped 700 million pounds. That equates to more than a 200-million pound swing in annualized U.S. cheese demand. U.S. cheese stocks, up 115 million pounds compared to last year, could erode fairly quickly if global cheese markets continue to converge, resulting in greater export opportunities for U.S. cheese and limiting imports.

Mesmans manage organic dairy along Pacic Coast of Washington

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – Not many farmers can open their barn and have salt water and islands a quarter mile away, but for Alan Mesman and his family, it is a view they are accustomed to.

“We’re 40 miles from Can-

ada, right on the edge of the country with islands all around us,” Mesman said.

Mesman, his wife, Anita, his son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Chelsy, and their son, John, 9 months, milk 100 cows on their organic dairy farm near Mount Vernon, Wash.

ceive an average of 29 inches of rain.

“That doesn’t sound like a lot but with our high water table, it is,” Mesman said. “We have water seeping out of the ground. It sometimes oods the drainage ditches, which a few people use for supplemental irrigation.”

However, the Mesmans are hooked up to the city water.

“That’s because we have salt water so close to the farm,” Mesman said. “We don’t have a well on the farm.”

A lot of that moisture comes during the winter months.

“Average winter days are between 35 to 40 degrees, cloudy and rainy,” Mesman said. “It’s dropped down to zero before. But when we hit the single digits, it gets really cold because of the humidity from the Pacic Ocean.”

For that very reason, the Mesmans do not see snow every winter.

“We haven’t had snow here

in a couple of years,” Mesman said. “It’s nothing like Midwest winters.”

On the other hand, the summers only reach temperatures in the upper 80s.

“It might get over 90, but that is pretty rare,” Mesman said. “It’s because the ocean’s temperature doesn’t change very much.”

The climate the Mesmans experience affects how they manage their dairy.

Cows at Mesmans’ dairy eat their raƟon. The cows are fed dry hay and grass silage in the feed alley during the six-month grazing season, but are fed a more substanƟal diet during the non-grazing season.

Of the Mesmans’ 350 acres of land, 249 of it is grass.

“We have good growing conditions for grasses here,” Mesman said.

One hundred of those acres are devoted to pastures, which the milk herd has access to for six months of the year.

“Even with the mild winters, it gets too wet during that time, especially with the high water table, to have them out year round, so we house them in our freestall barn with sawdust bedded stalls,” Mesman said.

During the grazing season, cows are rotationally grazed on four-acre pastures with mixtures of annual rye, perennial rye, white clover and orchard grass.

“They’re on a different pasture everyday,” Mesman said.

The good growing conditions for grass was the main reason the Mesmans became certied organic in 2006.

“It was a good t for us,” Mesman said. “Plus, the milk prices for organic milk were more consistent.”

Corn-growing conditions are not as favorable, which is why the family only has 73 acres of corn planted for corn silage.

“We only plant 70- to 85-day corn,” Mesman said. “That’s our idea of a long season corn. We’d never dream of using 90- to 140 day corn. The 85-day corn would take us 130 to 140 days to get where it needs to be because of the tidal breeze from the ocean and the lack of heat in the summer.”

The family also has 28 acres of alfalfa on Fidalgo Island.

“It’s only six miles away, so we take our equipment across the bridge to manage it,” Mesman said. “We don’t do dry hay in April or May because it’s still too wet. We round bale that as silage.”

Besides grazing, the cows are fed hay, corn silage, dry corn and other grains, and grass silage.

“We cut the same grass land we graze on for silage, too,” Mesman said.

“We can cut the grass ve to six different times during the year. We’re pretty self-sufcient. We grow most of the feed for the cows with the exception of the grains.”

During the grazing season, cows are fed predominantly grass silage and dry hay in a feed alley on the farm.

“The corn silage we use more as winter feed when the cows are in,” Mesman said.

Since two DeLaval VMS robots milk the cows, the Mesmans have the cows go through a sort gate before they leave the feed alley.

It reads the microchip in their ear, and if it is less than 90 minutes before their next allowed milking, they are moved into a holding pen.

“We don’t want the cows to go out

to the pasture and stay out there,” Mesman said. “If it’s more than 90 minutes, then they are sent back out. It works well for us.”

On average, the Mesmans’ 100-cow herd averages three visits per day at the robots.

“The cows are getting milked more consistently than when we milked in the double-8 herringbone,” Mesman said.

With his son, Ben, working with him, Mesman takes care of most of the feeding and bookwork, while Ben does the IT work with the robots, eldwork and calves.

“We work well together,” Mesman said.

One task the family does not do is the breeding.

“The A.I. technician does our breeding with minimal breeding from the herd bull,” Mesman said.

With only 400 dairies in the state, Mesman’s dairy has several dairy equipment dealers and machinery dealers within 10 miles of the farm.

“There are a lot of dairies down the I-5 corridor on both sides of Seattle in the western part of the state,” Mesman said. “On the east side of the state, there are more dairies found on the southern edge of the state near the tri-city area.”

Mesman said there are nearly 26 other dairies besides his own, that ship to Organic Valley and several more that ship to other organic creameries.

“It’s a good area for pasture-based systems,” Mesman said.

The family’s dairy farm dates back to 1942, when Mesman’s grandfather purchased the farm they currently operate.

“We used to have a farm on Whedbey Island until after Pearl Harbor when we were forced to move to the mainland,” Mesman said. “We still have a sliver of land there.”

The family originally had a at barn for their dairy herd until 1993 when they built the double-8 herringbone parlor.

“We milked in there for 20 years until we installed the robots in 2013 and built the freestall barn,” Mesman said.

During that time, Mesman’s son, returned from Wisconsin to come back and farm with him full time.

“I’m glad he’s interested in keeping it going,” Mesman said.

Looking ahead, the Mesmans plan to grow the herd in order to put in a third robot.

“We included that in the barn plan when we built this,” Mesman said.

But until then, Mesman is proud to be dairy farming.

“It’s what I always wanted to do as a kid,” Mesman said. “I really enjoy working with my family and watching my grandson grow up here.”

Chopping corn silage makes for busy Aug. 31

– After a few days of rain earlier in the week and a long bout of rain in the upcoming forecast, the Madsen family was hurrying to get their corn silage crop nished on Aug. 31.

“We were pushing to get it done because we had some custom chopping jobs the next day,” said Harlan Madsen. “We wanted to get as much done as we could before the rain hit again.”

After nishing school and pursuing his ag teaching career, Harlan jumped right into farming.

“I always wanted to farm,” he said. “It was a good way to live. I want to continue to do it for as long as I can” In 1994, Greg started working along side his father full time.

In addition to the new facilities, the family also purchased a new chopper for corn in 2009.

“We wanted to do earlage, but our chopper wasn’t capable of doing it, so that’s why we bought it,” Harlan said.

Because of the large investment, the family started doing custom chopping for seven other farmers.

“We’ve been doing custom chopping for 25 years for our neighbors. But, we needed to put more acres through it than what we were already, so we

pursued other custom work to justify the cost,” Harlan said.

“We’re able to t seven others in with our workload of getting our own quality forages up and committing to producing feed for them like we would produce our own.”

Four years ago, Janelle joined the farm on a part-time basis, and with the two children now back on the farm, the Madsen family is in the process of putting together a transition plan to eventually transfer the farm to the next generation.

Before they could start chopping, Harlan and Greg connected the bagger to the tractor at 8 a.m. and began unloading the three boxes full of corn silage from the night before.

“We chopped until 8 the night before,” Harlan said. “We’d gotten stuck a couple times because we had gotten over an inch of rain on Monday on top of the 1.5 inches we had on Saturday.

Water was standing in every tire track we made, so we decided to quit and start again when it was light out.”

After several hours chopping corn and unloading, Harlan stopped to start evening chores at 3 p.m.

By then, more help had arrived including a Ridgewater College student, Luke Herber, 18, who farms with his family near Altura, Minn.

“He came and helped Greg chop and unload,” Harlan said.

Once he put fresh sand down for the cows and fed the youngstock, Harlan started evening milking around 5:30.

“When I was close to nishing, they only had four loads left to chop,” Harlan said.

Unfortunately, not all four loads t in the bag.

“I still have part of a chopper box sitting with corn silage,” Harlan said.

Regardless, the Madsens nished their corn silage by the end of the day as planned.

“That is the rst time in history that we’ve ever nished corn silage in August,” Harlan said. “I was amazed we did it.”

Harlan nished cleaning the parlor by 7:30 p.m., and helped Greg put the corn head on the chopper to prep for their custom earlage job the next day for a fellow dairy farmer near Grove City, Minn.

Finally, after a hard day’s work, Harlan made it home by 9:15 p.m. to eat pizza and go to bed before custom chopping the next day.

“We had a really good day,” Harlan said. “We got a lot done. It was a team effort.”

With only 10 acres of corn silage left to chop, the family started chopping shortly after unloading the chopper boxes.

One of the varieties was about 70 percent moisture as they took it off the elds while another was closer to the 60 to 65 percent they prefer.

“It was a little wetter than we usually like, but with it being blended, it worked out,” Harlan said. “Usually if it’s too wet, it smells bad, but this stuff smells good. It’s some of the best looking stuff I’ve seen.”

This is a great selection of high quality well uddered cows. They currently have a 60-70 lb. tank average and consistently are under 200,000 in somatic cell count. The majority of the herd is third lactation and younger. The cows and heifers are bred for udders and type. Cows are on a low grain, high forage ration. They are rotationally grazed during the summer and fed a TMR mix during the winter and housed in a freestall barn.

CAMP DOUGLAS, Wis. – Ten years after their family sold the cows, a new milking adventure that continues to be protable for one Camp Douglas, Wis., couple was born.

Purchased in 1990, Cyrus Bradley’s parents, Richard and Paulette, rst started the farm with a herd of milking cows. Goats had their place on the farm, as well, but on a much smaller scale.

“We always had goats,” Cyrus said.

“When we sold the cows in 1999, we decided to really do something with them.”

From 1999 to 2009, Cyrus continued his family’s farm by raising steers and a small number of goats. It was in 2009 that he made the decision to retrot his facilities and focus on beginning a commercial dairy goat herd.

“There was not much that had to be changed from the original barn to the one we have now,” Cyrus said. “We lled in the gutter, put up some additional walls for the new parlor, added a new pipeline and that was just about it.”

The cows had been housed in a freestall barn. To better accommodate the goats, Cyrus removed the stalls and replaced them with a bedded pack. A new pole barn was built for kid housing, and soon, the Bradley farm was home to 120 milking goats.

Brenda joined the farming operation following the couple’s wedding in 2013. No stranger to goats herself, Brenda said she was excited to join her husband in a lifestyle they both enjoy.

“When I was in college at Southwest Technical in Fennimore, Wis., I started working on a dairy goat farm,” Brenda said. “I liked that goats were small enough for me to handle on my own.”

Together, the Bradleys are currently milking 100 goats and farm 171 total acres, 80 of which are dedicated to three to ve-acre pasture paddocks for grazing. The herd is made up of several breeds including Alpine, Saanen, Toggenburg, LaMancha and crossbreeds. Their milk is sold to Montchevre in Belmont, Wis. where it is made into a variety of goat cheeses.

There are a variety of reasons the Bradleys enjoy milking goats. One of the most notable reasons is the nancial stability that comes with the market.

“We have an annual meeting in De-

cember where we usually nd out what the set base price is for the next year,” Brenda said. “As far as we’ve seen, we’ve never had money taken away; the price is either steady or more.”

Base prices can be set as high as $44.50 per hundredweight or more, with additional premiums available for farmers producing milk at higher volumes, components and lower plate counts.

Like many other dairy goat producers, the Bradleys seasonally breed their herd to kid in January. Brenda said this is done deliberately at the time the milk price is at its highest.

“The milk price is highest from December to February when most goats are dried off or at the end of their production. Larger goat farms are able to kid all year round, but that’s not something we are able to do here. Eventually, we would like start kidding in December,” Brenda said.

On average, the Bradleys will have 200 kids a season. Most kids will continue to be raised on the farm, although some does are sold based on maternal records, phenotype traits and resistance to worms.

“A sick goat can be a dead goat,” Cyrus said. “We have to take the necessary precautions to prevent any form of illness.”

The Bradleys said that since the goats graze all summer long, worms are the biggest concern that they look out for. At the rst sign of their prevalence, a vet is called to the farm to do a fecal test and prescribe a dewormer.

Some years are harder than others.

“We always had goats.

When we sold the cows in 1999, we decided to really do something with them.”

“Worms are a challenge most dairy goat farmers will face, but conditions vary year to year,” Cyrus said. “Some years prove to be more challenging than others.”

With a current peak production of seven pounds, the Bradleys are working

towards their goal of a nine-pound herd average. With extra pasture that they are currently working with, they hope to also diversify their operation with the addition of a cow-calf beef operation in the coming years. As they work towards their goals and continue to grow their farm, the passion the Bradleys have for their goats grows with it. “They’re friendly creatures and easy to work with,� Brenda said. “We couldn’t imagine it any other way.�

They are starting on edible beans around here and are suppose to start on potatoes but it was too wet. Nobody is chopping yet. The corn is all dented but has to dry down so it can be bagged. The fields are nice and firm. We are getting the chopper ready. The soybeans are starting to show a little bit of color.

I have been doing some custom chopping for other guys. The moisture content has ranged from 60-68 percent. I have been getting stuck chopping when I harvest near Howard Lake. I finished fourth crop hay last week. I cut on Aug 27 and 29 and round baled it Sept. 3. It was as good as first crop. I think we had at least a ton and a half an acre. The soybeans are starting to turn around here.

Our soybeans look like they will be really good. A portion of the RAINFALL soybeans has had TOTALS more rain and is green Last 3 while other fields of Weeks soybeans are drier and starting to yellow.

When it dries up we are going to start chopping.

We had 2 inches between yesterday and today (Sept.

5-6). The corn is about half milkline. We have some others that is onefourth milkline. This past weekend some neighbors started chopping. We were doing fifth crop hay. We cut Sept. 1-2 and chopped on Sept. 3. A lot of the neighbors’ soybeans are turning, but ours are green as can be. We changed the knives and cutterbar, and put the roller mill in on the chopper yesterday.

As soon as it stops raining we will start chopping.

Some of our neighbors have chopped and it’s about 68 percent moisture. Some of the cobs of corn are starting to drop and the husks are turning brown. The kernel is ripe, but the stalk is green. A lot of people are adjusting their kernel processor for that.

Last week we were busy doing fourth crop hay. The quantity wasn’t there but the quality was. We took it at 28 days because it was suppose to rain.

We are about half done chopping corn.

We have 80 loads done and have about 90 loads left. It’s a very RAINFALL good crop. We are TOTALS putting the corn on Last 3 piles. The corn was 63 Weeks percent moisture. Our biggest concern is the ground is too wet. I plan to take a fifth cutting of alfalfa. The soybeans are changing but they are not as advanced as they were at this Since April 1 time last year.

55 cows, 350 acres We just got done chopping third crop alfalfa. It was a really good crop – more than the second crop. The corn isn’t looking bad. Some is good, some is not; mine’s OK, but not the greatest. We are closer to chopping than I think, but I would say we are two or three weeks out. We just got a bunch of rain again, but the crops are bouncing back from the flooding earlier this summer.

It seems like when we get rain, it’s a lot of it all at once.

But, despite the rains we’ve gotten the last two weeks, things dried off really good and didn’t make chopping hay a challenge.

We’ve been a little wet but things have been good these last two weeks. Fourth crop hay is done; we’ve just been waiting for things to dry out so we can start corn silage.

The last crop of hay turned out really good; actually these have been the four best crops of hay I have taken off since I’ve been home for, both quality and tonnage. There are a few guys who are diving into the fields to start corn silage, but I’m thinking in the next week everyone will be in there. The beans have seen a little bit of color change, but I’m sure the next couple weeks we will see that be a little more drastic.

We have had some good couple weeks here. We’ve been doing hay and seeded rye where we took grain off.

Our last crop of hay turned out really good; we yielded a lot in this crop. We baled a bunch on Thursday, then hauled manure and spread after everything was baled.

Some farmers have started chopping corn in this area, and we are hoping to start next week depending on how much rain we get. The beans are starting to turn.

The early beans are starting to drop their leaves we see, but the rest are starting to turn yellow right now.

We chopped 106 16-foot chopper wagons off 38 acres; that’s 16 more loads then I got last year. The milk line was one-third to half down. Now I plan to haul manure. I also plan to work on 20 acres of fourth crop. I chopped most of the fourth crop last week. The soybeans are turning yellow. It’s actually nice in the fields.

Any farmer who is trying to make third, fourth or fifth crop hay around here is struggling. We have had plenty of moisture and it has been hot. We have not started chopping corn, but I am aware of farmers who have. It is just a matter of time once we see what the rain does this week. The stalks and leaves haven’t quite dried down because of the moisture, but the ears are dried up. We are probably a week out, but if we get a lot of rain, it will ruin everything. In this area, we are really struggling to make dry hay bales because we have high moisture and humidity. We’ve had enough moisture that farmers who have double cropped soybeans this year, they are seeing they do really well and starting to flower.

I made my fourth cutting hay and there was an awful lot of it; good quality, too. I think we RAINFALL will be harvesting corn TOTALS next week. I tested it for Last 2 moisture last Friday and Weeks it was at 70, so I have a bit of time yet. Soybeans in the area still look pretty good but haven’t started to dry down yet. We had a week and a half stretch without any rain, but otherwise it’s been kind Since April 1 29.7” of wet.

The apple of my heart

As kids head back to school, I’m sure there are bright red apples appearing on the teacher’s desk as students try to get off on a good foot for the coming year. I always think of apples and school time. When I was old enough to start school, my grandparents planted three apple trees for each of the girls and a peach tree for my brother. We dug holes on the east side of the garden, right next to the road. As the tree grew, the school bus driver started picking us up next to the trees so we could bring him an apple or two for the road. I can still see the juice dribbling down his chin as he bit into a ripe Jonathan apple and using the back of his hand and the cuff of his sleeve to dry his face. Fifty years later, the school bus doesn’t stop by the apple trees, but my Jonathan tree and Nancy’s Red Delicious continue to produce apples for eating, baking and cider making.

Every fall, we pull out the cider press my great-great-grandparents used when they settled the farm. Over the years, we discovered the best apple cider came from a combination of the Jonathan and Red Delicious apples.

The amber colored juice tastes just like the rst bite of ripe apples. If you don’t have a cider press, here is a quick way to make fresh apple juice. I even use the bruised apples in this recipe.

Indoor Apple Cider 5 qt. apples cut up (skins and all) 3 tsp. cream of tarter 4 qt. boiling water Fill large crock or a clean 5-gallon plastic bucket with apple chunks.

Sprinkle tarter on top of apples. Pour water on top. Cover. Let stand for 24 hours.

Drain juice into large pot.

Add: 2 cups sugar and 1 Tbsp. lemon juice. Bring to a boil. Pour into hot jars to process for canning or into a pitcher to drink after it cools.

This is a recipe from a dear family friend back home. Tried and true.

Apple Walnut Cake (Gladys Bigger) 1 2/3 cup sugar 2 eggs 1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 tsp. vanilla 2 cups our 2 tsp. soda 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 4 cups chopped, unpeeled apples 1 cup chopped walnuts

If you hate to make pie crust, but love apple pie, here is your new favorite recipe. Jill Gablenz shared this with me years ago, before I nally gured out how to make pie crusts.

Swedish Apple Pie 3 cups peeled and sliced apples (3 or 4 medium apples) 2 Tbsp. Brown Sugar (I use more) 1 tsp. cinnamon (I use more) 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup butter, melted 1 cup our 1 egg Pinch of salt.

Fill an 8x8 pan or 6x10 pan 2/3 full of apples. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over apples. Mix melted butter, sugar, our, egg and salt together.

(Batter will be sticky) Spread over apples.

Bake 50 to 60 minutes at 350 degrees. I usually end up baking it on the long side.

I found this recipe in a magazine years ago. The ink on my recipe card is starting to fade, but I can still see the blue star marking it as a favorite recipe.

Great dessert for a special meal or just because you love someone special.

Epicurean Apple Cobbler 1 cup our 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cups sugar (divided)

Food columnist, Natalie Schmitt 2 Tbsp. butter 2 Tbsp. milk 2 eggs 1/2 cup brandy 3 cups peeled and sliced apples Sift together dry ingredients, set aside. In another bowl, beat together eggs and 1 cup sugar. Add butter and milk. Add our mixture and mix well.

Pour into a greased 9-inch square pan.

Simmer brandy and remaining sugar (1/2 cup) for 3 to 4 minutes. Add apple slices. Mix. Pour hot apple mixture over batter. Bake 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

It isn’t harvest season without raw apple cake. I love this recipe because I don’t have to peel apples. I will sometimes make two cakes at once, one to frost and the other to eat on the run.

Both will be gone in less than 24 hours.

Frosting: 6 oz. softened cream cheese 3 Tbsp. softened butter 1 tsp. vanilla 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar In a mixing bowl, beat sugar and eggs. Add oil and vanilla; mix well.

Combine dry ingredients. Gradually add to sugar mixture, mixing well.

Stir in apples and walnuts. Pour into a greased and oured 9x13 pan. Bake 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool.

Frosting: Beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla in a mixing bowl. Gradually add powdered sugar until the frosting has reached desired spreading consistency. Frost cooled cake. Garnish with a few extra walnuts. (Glady’s secret ingredient was using black walnuts from the tree in their yard.)

Cut broccoli into bite size pieces. Cook bacon crispy and break into pieces.

Mix broccoli, onions,bacon and raisins in large bowl. Mix mayo, sugar, and vinegar. Make sure sugar dissolves. Mix everything together. Add sunflower seeds just before serving.

Homemade Goat Cheese 1 gal. goat milk 1/2 cup vinegar (may need to add more) For seasoning, use whatever you want ie: chives, garlic, or basil.

Use a double boiler or two pans. Add milk into smaller pan and have water in larger one. Heat milk to 161 degrees for 15 seconds. Remove from heat and add vinegar. Stir until separation starts. Let sit until it looks like it’s done separating. Add more vinegar if it doesn’t look separated enough. Strain with a fine screen. Let cool in refrigerator and season or eat plain. Best served with crackers or used in salads.
