Two dairies, one enterprise Siewerts, Youngs form partnership to harvest forages

ZUMBRO FALLS, Minn. – When it comes time for chopping, Kevin Siewert is thinking about someone else’s crop.

“I want to be sure the Youngs gets better quality feed than I have,” Siewert said.

That’s because the two dairy farmers work together to get each of their dairy’s chopping done through their partnership, K&M Chopping.

While Siewert milks 480 cows with his family and team of employees near Zumbro Falls, Minn., Maurie Young and his family and their crew milk 950 cows on their dairy near Plainview, Minn.

“We’re just as concerned about getting the other guy’s up as our own. It has to be that way. Partnerships need to bring value to all parties involved,” Young said.

Chopping this way has its benets. A big one is cutting down on expenses for equipment.

“A lot of what drives this arrangement is the cost,” Young said.

“You have so much tied up in equipment and assets to make this work.

It’s kind of nice if you can spread it out and work with another dairy.”

People in the dairy community Graduates honored as National Dairy Shrine Senior Recognition Award winners Leadership, knowledge, and passion for dairy are just a few highlighting characteristics of this year’s National Dairy Shrine Senior Recognition Award winners.

The University of Minnesota’s, Mary Liebenstein will receive the top honor, a $2,000 recognition while University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate Bethany Dado will take home the second highest recognition, a $1,500 award. Other graduates will be acknowledged as Senior Recognition Award recipients with $1,000 prizes. They are Cody Getschel, Osceola, Wis. and Kara Maxwell, Donahue, Iowa.

National Jersey leadership named Ofcers and directors of the US Jersey organizations were elected during the Annual Meetings of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) and National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ) held June 29 through July 2, 2016 in San Diego, Calif.

Saving small farms Fonders share how organic farming can revitalize dairies, towns

MILBANK, S.D. – Organic dairy farming can help preserve small family farms and spark the revitalization of rural communities.

That was the overarching message of a tour and informational session that was held Aug. 10 at the organic dairy farm that is operated by Rick Fonder and his family.

The meeting was organized by the Deuel County chapter of Dakota Rural Action, (DRA) – a grassroots group that supports conservation and family agriculture.

“Our goal is to inform people that there is an alternative to conventional agriculture and that alternative is organic farming,” said Kimberly James, chairwoman of the Deuel County chapter of DRA. “Organic dairy farming can create opportunities for young folks to come back to the farm and keep more people on the land. We need to protect our rural way of life. Part of the way we can accomplish this is by educating decision makers at every level all across the state.”

Fonder and his family switched their dairy farm from conventional to organic 10 years ago. The Fonders milk 30 Holsteins, farm 245 acres and rent 200 acres of pasture. They raise 300-some broilers, have six sows and their offspring, and keep a herd of 60 beef cows.

“The switch to organic has been a good one for us,” said Fonder. “There was a bit of a learning curve during the change to using no chemicals on the crops and no antibiotics on our animals. But we have found that our animals are actually doing better without antibiotics.”

Fonder is currently receiving over $35 per hundredweight (cwt) for his milk.

“It’s nice to get a price that gives you some room to breathe,” he said. “But the best part about having an organic operation is that the health of our animals has improved.”

Guy Jodarski, DVM, is a supervising veterinarian with Organic Valley. Jodarski, who has been a veterinarian for 30 years and operated a dairy practice for 12 years, was at the Fonder farm to address the gathering.

“There once was a time when Wisconsin had 110,000 dairy farms,” said Jodarski, a native of the Badger State.

“We now have fewer than 10,000, which means that we have lost 90 percent of our dairy farms. We need to do something to reverse this trend. Organic dairy farming can help keep our smaller dairy operations viable and create new opportunities for young people. The most rewarding part of my involvement with Organic Valley has been helping small family dairy farms stay in business.”

points in managing grazing and his organic dairy herd.

The Fonders have used electric fences to create a set of paddocks adjacent to their farmstead. The paddocks are seeded to a mixture of grasses and alfalfa. Each paddock, which is 1.5 to 2 acres, is grazed for 2 to 3 days and is then given a three-week rest.

This schedule is adjusted according to the weather and the conditions of the paddocks.

“Intestinal parasite control in a grazing system is a management issue,” said Jodarski. “Parasites can be

controlled if you don’t graze the grass too short. The parasites migrate out to the tips of the grass when it cools off at night, but retreat back toward the ground as the day heats up. If you don’t graze the grass shorter than 3 to 4 inches, parasites are less of a problem.”

Organic dairy producers are allowed to vaccinate their animals. They also have a variety of alternative animal health care choices in their toolkits.

“We make use of herbal remedies, probiotics and tinctures,” said Fonder. “For

Fonder speaks from a lifetime of dairy experience that began when he milked his rst cow at age 7.

were being used. What we were doing was selecting for cows that needed antibiotics in order to stay alive.

I quit that job and began milking 18 cows on a rented farm. I’m milking fewer cows now, but I enjoy it a lot more.”

Getting started in organic dairy farming can be time consuming and expensive. But there are things producers can do to mitigate these factors.

“Cattle have to be fed organic feed for a year before they can be certied as organic,” said Jodarski. “And it takes three years to switch farmland from conventional to organic. During the conversion process you can market your crops as transitional crops, which bring a better price than conventional crops. Once your land has been certied as organic, you can buy heifers and raise them on your homegrown organic feed. You could also purchase cows that have been part of an organic dairy operation and begin selling organic milk relatively quickly.”

Diversity is a key operational element for the Fonders.

cows do better on a diet that contains a large variety of forages and grains.

And maintaining a diverse crop rotation program helps with weed and pest control.”

“The foundation of a healthy organic dairy operation is healthy soil that hasn’t been treated with synthetic chemicals,” said Jodarski. “Crop diversity is very important and should include the use of cover crops.”

“You have to learn to be patient when you farm organically,” said Fonder. “You don’t run out and plant until the soil has warmed to the point where it will support germination.

Weed control in organic row crops can be a challenge. You have to cultivate early and often.”

Goldsmith embarks on new adventures

Teen crowned Iowa Dairy Princess

AMES, Iowa – Katelyn Goldsmith is embarking on two new adventures this fall.

Not only is she beginning her college career at Iowa State University, but she’s beginning an exciting year as Iowa Dairy Princess.

Goldsmith, 18, was crowned August 10, during an evening ceremony just prior to the opening of the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. She ofcially begins her reign as state dairy princess on September 1.

Goldsmith is excited to speak for the dairy industry.

“There are a lot of awesome dairy farmers in our state. This is my opportunity to represent them and to network with them. It will be an awesome experience,” Goldsmith said in a phone interview during freshman orientation at college. “I expect to have a lot of fun representing the people in the dairy industry. I’ll reach out to farmers and talk to consumers. I’ll let people know that our dairy farmers care about their animals and the products they produce—and make sure that

they’re healthy and safe.”

At this point, Goldsmith is not sure how many appearances she’ll make, but – after talking to former state princesses – she expects that she’ll have to miss college classes a few times.

“The state will give me a list of things to attend. Businesses and companies can make requests. I’ll go on school visits, Midwest Dairy events, shows, and county banquets,” she said. “I’m really looking to the State Fair – it’s a year away – but that will be my year. I’m also looking forward to the Fuel Up to Play 60 Summit Day.” Goldsmith is majoring in dairy science at Iowa State.

She is considering going into research after graduation.

The daughter of Jim and Kristi, Goldsmith grew up as the middle child on a dairy farm outside of Earlville, in northeast Iowa. Older brother James is a dairy science senior at Iowa State and younger sister Lauren is a freshman in high school.

The family milks about 150 grade Holsteins – with a few crossbreds – and raises corn, hay, and soybeans on 350 acres.

Goldsmith loves working with the cattle.

“It’s been a joy to work with them. I feed calves, milk, and do whatever Dad needs help with,” she said.

It’s going to be a busy fall for Goldsmith as she’ll also compete in another national contest, that as a member of the state-winning 4-H dairy quiz bowl team at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville.

A 4-H dairy project member for eight years, Goldsmith has shown the champion crossbred (Holstein/Brown Swiss) at the county fair several times.

Goldsmith’s involvement with the dairy royalty programs began when she was in rst or second grade and was named alternate county “Little Miss Squirt.” She thought that was cool and soon realized that there was a big princess contest.

After being a Delaware County dairy princess for two years, she decided to enter the state contest, held in Ankeny, Iowa two days before the State Fair. Twelve girls took part, with a princess and alternate named. The new alternate princess is Shana Hilgerson, 19, of Elkader. She is the daughter of Scott and Suzy Hilgerson and will share duties with Goldsmith. Hilgerson represented Clayton County and is a sophomore in animal science at Iowa State University.

USDA lowers 2016 production forecast

The Agriculture Department lowered its 2016 milk production forecast from last month in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates, due to a reduced estimate on milk per cow. The 2017 forecast was raised as “higher forecast milk prices and lower feed costs in late 2016 and 2017 are expected to lead to a modest expansion in the cow inventory and more rapid growth in milk per cow.”

2016 production and marketings were projected at 212.1 and 211.1 billion pounds respectively, down 300 million from last month on production and 400 million pounds less on marketings. If realized, 2016 production would be up 3.5 billion pounds or 1.7 percent from 2015.

2017 production and marketings were projected at 215.8 and 214.9 billion pounds respectively, are up 200 million pounds in production and 300 million in marketings from last month. If realized, 2017 production would be up 3.7 billion pounds or 1.7 percent from 2016.

Fat basis exports were raised for 2016 on continued strength in whole milk powder (WMP) exports.

The 2017 forecast was unchanged. Skim-solids basis export forecasts for 2016 and 2017 were raised on higher sales of whole milk powder and whey products.

Import forecasts were raised for 2016 and 2017 as imports of fat-containing products have increased.

Fat basis stocks are forecast higher as stocks of butter remain high, but on a skim-solids basis, stocks were reduced.

Cheese, nonfat dry milk (NDM) and whey prices for 2016 were forecast higher as demand remains rm, but the forecast butter price was reduced as stocks remain larger than expected.

The 2016 Class III milk price estimate was raised, reecting higher cheese and whey prices. USDA expects a range of $14.80-$15.00 per hundredweight (cwt.), up 80-90 cents from last month’s estimate. The 2017 average was put at $15.00-$16.00 per cwt., up 50 cents from a month ago.

The Class IV price forecast was lowered as the lower expected butter price more than offsets the higher NDM price. Look for a 2016 average of $13.75-$14.05 per cwt., down 5-15 cents from last month’s projection. The 2017 average was put at $13.60-$14.70, up a dime from last month’s report.

Market bulls got more to feed on in Tuesday’s Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction. The weighted average for all products offered, like an Olympian-style pole vaulter, jumped 12.7 percent, biggest gain since September 16, 2015, following a 6.6 percent ascent August 2.

All products registered sharp gains, led by whole milk powder (WMP), up 18.9 percent, after jumping 9.9 percent in the last event. Butter milk powder was up 18.1 percent. Butter was up 14.1 percent, following an impressive 6.6 percent increase last time. Next came Cheddar cheese, up 8.9 percent, after inching 0.8 percent lower last time. Anhydrous milkfat followed close behind, up 8.4 percent, after it gained 4.7 percent last time. Lactose was up 3.5 percent. Skim milk powder (SMP) was up 3.0 percent, after gaining 2.1 percent on August 2, and rennet casein was up 2.5 percent after a leading 16.3 percent increase last time.

FC Stone equates the average GDT butter price to $1.5082 per pound U.S. CME butter closed Friday at $2.19. GDT Cheddar cheese equated to about $1.4320 per pound U.S. and compares to Friday’s CME block Cheddar at $1.8650. GDT skim milk powder hit 91.97 cents per pound and whole milk was at $1.2223. FC Stone’s Dave Kurzawski pointed to “Strong volume again going to North and South Asia. What about Kim Jong Un’s purchasing power?” he asked.

“The North might be pushing this thing in secret,” Kurzawski said, but “The key takeaway is the gain of WMP over SMP, as should be the case given the reduction in WMP production in favor of more SMP in the world.” “The concern to market bulls needs probably to be most on the lack of Middle Eastern buying where a lot of SMP has to move, as well as some fat.

With Crude prices low there should be medium term concern over their viability as large scale buyers.”

“Bulls also need to keep tabs on how much of respective forward portfolios the Oceania processors are actually able to sell at these levels and whether this is a panic buying wave or will be sustained,” according to Kurzawski.

“Last time GDT raced up to 3000ish (late 2015) it started with the physical offers outside GDT evaporating, forcing buyers onto the platform. As soon as buyers got their ll, they all stepped back and it came crashing back down to 1900.”

“This has been going on over the last month with NZ processors placing good chunks of volume into China and the Middle East at pricing in the low 2000s causing apparent near term tightness. The problem is that the supply fundamentals haven’t really changed in NZ from a production point of view. For this rally to be sustained their sales force will need to push a lot more volume at these levels,” Kurzawski writes.

In other global dairy news; Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) accepted 13 requests for export assistance this week to sell 1.5 million pounds of cheese to customers in Asia, Central America, the Middle East and North Africa. The product has been contracted for delivery through December and, after adjusting for cancellations, puts CWT’s 2016 exports at 32.16 million pounds of American-type cheeses, 8.37 million pounds of butter (82 percent milkfat) and 21.3 million pounds of whole milk powder to 21 countries.

Cash block Cheddar cheese headed higher and butter saw a second week of decline the third week of August as traders absorbed Tuesday’s GDT and awaited Friday afternoon’s July Milk Production report.

The blocks closed Friday morning at $1.8650 per pound, up 8 1/2-cents on the week, eliminating the inverted spread, 12 1/2-cents above a year ago, and the highest block price since November 2014. The barrels held all week at $1.8650, 17 cents above a year ago.

Twenty seven cars of block sold this week and none of barrel.

FC Stone summed things up in its August 17 Early Morning Update; “The current trend must be respected as there are scattered, supportive aspects beginning to unfold on the global stage with the EU tapping the brakes on production and increasing cull rates, soft production also stemming from New Zealand, Australia and South America.” It also cited National Milk’s request that the government step in and purchase cheese in an effort to shore up prices.

It remains to be seen whether in this very political year the Administration will do so. Dairy farmers have surely had a rough time of late but Class III futures have since strengthened and current contracts are well above $16 through July 2018.

Dairy Market News (DMN) reports that cheese production varies across the Central region, warning that, as Class I demand grows some manufacturers will face dwindling milk supplies. Many report maximizing current milk intakes and are keeping vats as

full as possible. Spot loads of milk are increasingly difcult to come by and few manufacturers report purchasing additional loads. Contacts feel that overall demand for cheese continues to grow and seem optimistic that demand will continue to grow. Inventories are mixed in the Central region. Cheddar stocks are a little heavy, but have seen some relief the past few weeks.

Western cheese output remains active and plenty of milk is available. Cheese makers in parts of the region are scrambling to get a few extra loads of milk due to seasonal declines in production and the increased draw of uid milk for school startups. Cheese inventories are long, but holding relatively steady.

Retail demand is solid and manufacturers report cheese is moving well but a few contacts note a slight downturn in food service markets.

Butter continued its decline, closing at $2.19 per pound, down 6 cents on the week and 18 cents below a year ago when it skyrocketed 30 1/2 cents and eventually peaked at $3.1350 on September 25. 15 cars were sold this week.

Churns are slowing for some manufacturers in the Central region, according to DMN, as milk intakes are falling and production schedules are less active.

Growth in demand is expected as Midwest schools begin again. Demand is steady from retail and food service outlets. A few buyers seeking butter, who had little success in previous weeks, were able to make purchases this week.

Western butter production remains steady. Manufacturers generally are content with the cream available and, as a whole, are not actively seeking much additional cream. A few processors have stopped or slowed their churns and are selling cream to Class II manufacturers. Inventories are large but many contacts are comfortable with stock levels knowing that Fourth Quarter butter needs can be met, says DMN. Cash Grade A nonfat dry milk (NDM) closed Friday at 85 3/4-cents per pound, up 2 1/2-cents on the week and 9 cents above a year ago. Nine carloads found new homes on the week.

The September Federal order Class I base milk price was announced by USDA at $16.56 per cwt., up $1.49 from August, 22 cents above September 2015 and is the highest Class I price since December 2015.

It equates to about $1.42 per gallon, up from $1.30 a month ago. The Nine month Class I average rests at $14.37, down from $16.33 at this time a year ago and $23.18 in 2014.

Speaking of Class I; challenges still exist in uid consumption. June packaged uid milk sales totaled 3.78 billion pounds, down 1.4 percent from June 2015, according to USDA. Conventional product sales totaled 3.56 billion pounds, down 1.8 percent from a year ago; organic products, at 217 million pounds, were up 6.7 percent. Organic represented about 5.7 percent of total sales for the month.

Whole milk sales totaled 1.18 billion pounds, up 4.6 percent from a year ago, with year to date running 5.0 percent above a year ago and making up 3.1 percent of total uid sales. Skim milk sales were down 12.9 percent from a year ago and down 10.7 percent year to date.

Total packaged uid milk sales for the rst half of 2016 totaled 20.68 billion pounds, down just 0.5 percent from the same period a year ago. Year-to-date sales of conventional products, at 23.2 billion pounds, were down 0.8 percent; organic products, at 1.1 billion pounds, were up 5.6 percent. Dairy margins strengthened further through the rst half of August following higher milk prices, while feed costs have held relatively steady since the end of July, according to the latest Margin Watch (MW) from Chicago-based Commodity & Ingredient Hedging LLC. “Projected margins are now well above the 80th percentile of the past 10 years, and close to the 90th percentile in both spot Third Quarter and deferred Second Quarter 2017, the MW states. “The key indicator from the past week was USDA’s release of the August WASDE report which was considered very bearish for the corn market, although the price response has been different.”

“In a shock to most industry observers, USDA sharply increased their projections for both corn yield and production well above industry estimates. Yield was estimated up 7.1 bushels from July at 175.1 bushels per acre with total corn production forecast up 613 million bushels from the previous estimate to 15.153 billion. As a result, ending stocks are now projected at

2.409 billion bushels, the highest since 2004/05. Despite the bearish implications from the report, corn is actually trading higher based on the assumption that most of the recent price weakness had already discounted expectations for a larger crop.”

“Spot cash prices are now below $3.00 per bushel in many locations, and focus is shifting to the strong pace of demand. In the August report, USDA also lowered their 2016 milk production forecast,” as reported previously, and the MW concludes that “higher expected milk prices and lower feed costs are anticipated to support modest herd expansion and greater milk per cow later this year and into 2017.”

Meanwhile; USDA’s latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook echoed dairy projections in the previous week’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report.The Outlook states that “feed price forecasts for 2015/2016 and 2016/17 have been lowered substantially from last month. The 2015/16 corn price forecast is $3.55-$3.65 per bushel. The 2016/17 corn price forecast is $2.85-$3.45 per bushel, down 25 cents from last month at both ends of the range.

The estimated 2015/16 soybean meal price is $325 per short ton. The 2016/17 soybean meal price forecast is $305-$345 per short ton, down $20 at both ends of the range. The national average price for alfalfa hay decreased from $147 per short ton in May to $142 in June. “ “A July report by USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service reports that global prices for skim milk powder and whole milk powder have risen recently, likely attributable to lower exportable supplies among several key traders and higher demand in many Asian countries.”

“The 2016 milk production forecast for the top ve exporters is about 1 percent above 2015, with year-over-year increases expected for the European Union (EU) and the United States but decreases for Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand. Notably, while EU milk production increased substantially in the rst part of 2016, the pace of milk output is expected to decline sharply for the remainder of the year,” according to the Outlook.

Duane Nelson passes away Duane Nelson, 57, of Winthrop, Minn. passed away peacefully at his home on May 12, 2016, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Duane James Nelson was born on Jan. 28, 1959, in Brainerd, Minn., the son of Hilding “Bill” and Rita Nelson. He was an active FFA member and a 1977 graduate of Brainerd High School. Duane attended the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where he was a member of the Delta Theta Sigma Fraternity and received his Bachelor of Science degree in animal science in the spring of 1981.

On June 20, 1981, Duane was united in marriage to Mary Hupf. They rented a farm near Owatonna, Minn., and started their dairy farming career. They were blessed with three children: Erik, Tracy, and Brenda. In April of 1988, they purchased the farm north of Winthrop and built up a distinguished herd of registered Holsteins and Ayrshires. Duane’s passion was his cows and he enjoyed using genetics and nutrition to develop the herd into what it is today.

Duane loved dairy farming, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, gardening, playing cards and games, being a Winthrop Lion and helping others. He was an active member of the Winthrop Lions Club, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, and was on the board of directors for Genex Cooperative and Cooperative Resources International (CRI) for many years.

Duane is survived by: Mary, his wife of 34 years; children, Erik (Megan) Nelson, Tracy Nelson, and Brenda (Alex) Miller; grandchildren, Charlie, Levi, and Nora Nelson, Caleb and Travis Miller; siblings, Leo Nelson, Iris (Steve) Shively, William (Sue) Nelson, Ed (Gayle) Nelson, Rosanne (Bruce) Caughey, Ron (Barb) Nelson, Gloria (Rick Williams) Nelson; many nieces and nephews.

Aug 23 - USDA to Buy $20 Million in Cheese to Feed Hungry

USDA will buy 11 million pounds of cheese from private stocks to assist food banks and pantries across the nation, while reducing the cheese surplus, which is at its highest level in 30 years, according to today’s USDA press release. The purchase is valued at $20 million. National Milk Producers Federation, on Aug. 12, asked USDA to provide relief by purchasing up to $150 million in cheese products to donate to the needy. as its disposal surplus funds in its Section 32 program. The Section 32 program dates back to 1935 and the era when USDA regularly removed price-depressing surplus foods from the market and then disposed of them through exports and domestic feeding programs in a manner not to interfere with commercial sales. Historically, the school lunch and other child feeding programs were initiated from surplus foodstuffs available under Section 32.

Section 32 is funded from 30% of the import duties collected from customs receipts. As USDA’s Àscal year comes to an end, Section 32 funds are still available, and NMPF along with Congress, the National Farmers Union, and the American Farm Bureau made the case that the funds would be well spent removing excess cheese from the market.

The cotton industry successfully obtained Section 32 funds earlier this year. Prior to the announcement, rumors abounded today that the move was eminent, but spot cheese and futures were not swayed—perhaps because the CME cheese market had already rallied more than 50 cents since the sub-$1.30/lb. prices posted in May 2016. Overshadowed by USDA’s press release on the cheese purchase was another USDA announcement that it will extend the deadline for dairy producers to enroll in the Dairy Margin Protection Program (MPP) until Dec. 16, 2016. The previous deadline was Sept. 30, 2016. As a result, producers will have a clearer picture

U.S. butter stocks typically peak in May or June. This year is not typical. U.S. butter stocks continued to grow in July, according to USDA’s Cold Storage report released this afternoon. USDA revised its estimate of June stocks 2.1 million pounds higher to 328.2 million pounds. July butter stocks grew by nearly 5 million pounds to 333.1 million pounds, the highest monthly tally in more than a decade and 31% greater than July 2015. During the past Àve years, July butter stocks have declined by an average of 10.9 million pounds. At 770 million pounds, American cheese stocks are at their highest monthly total for any July in more than a decade..

The air is crisp and thoughts are turning to what lies ahead this fall. In Chicago, that means the Bears. But today’s bears are not those of the gridiron—no, they are bears of a different sort, the ones who arrive on La Salle Street to herald in bad news. Yesterday after USDA’s announcement that it would buy 11 million pounds of cheese failed to live up to the hype that surrounded the original request, those who had bought the rumor were left with little alternative than to sell the fact that the government’s cheese purchase will do little to support markets at their current lofty levels. Although U.S. dairy markets have been able to shake off what at times has seemed to be insurmountable evidence of lower markets ahead—higher milk production, the largest dairy herd since 2008, and mounting stocks—the newly born bull Ànally swooned today. Futures markets turned red and remained that way into the close. But, this is fall and the holidays are just over the horizon, which could mean another market lift is in store

Zambia dairywoman uses bike to deliver milk

PALABANA, Chongwe District, Zambia – Getting milk from farm to the cooperative is essential.

“Failing to deliver milk, even once, is a loss,” said Georgina Situmbeko.

Every day, the 68-year-old widow delivers milk she collects from her dairy cattle to Parmalat, the local dairy coop-

erative and collection center, near the village of Palabana, Chongwe District, Zambia.

The trek is only eight miles from Situmbeko’s 21-acre farm, however, nearly a day’s worth of travel.

“It’s difcult because it’s far to where I’m suppose to deliver milk,” said Situmbeko, who would carry the milk by hand or in a wheelbarrow to its destination. “Because of the transportation, I used to only

However, in recent years, Situmbeko’s work has become easier now that she has acquired a Buffalo Bicycle – a sturdy bike designed for the challenging terrain she faces. These bikes have improved access to dairy markets in sub-Saharan Africa, and also education and

health care.

“Our goal is to improve effectiveness in the industry, as many of our dairies are small and old,” said Brian Moonga, Zambia director for World Bicycle Relief, a global non-prot that designs and distributes the Buffalo Bicycles.

The non-prot organization

has been distributing bikes to students and health care workers in rural Africa since 2006; in 2013, they expanded their focus to the dairy industry in Zambia.

“Different rural areas have different cultures and different ways of farming,” Dave Neiswander said. “In certain sectors, depending on the regional culture and terrain, dairy farming makes sense.”

Neiswander is the president of World Bicycle Relief, which is based out of Chicago, Ill. Within the dairy industry of Zambia, prior to the use of bikes for transportation, 80 percent of dairy producers were using wheelbarrows, makeshift pushbikes or poor quality bicycles.

“However, these methods were not serving the needs of the customer,” Neiswander said. “They needed a design that was appropriate for the terrain and daily uses.”

To meet the demands of dairy producers, the non-prot organization has piloted employee purchase plans with several dairy cooperatives that allow producers to buy the bicycles through the cooperative and pay for them over time by deducting an amount from the monthly milk check.

In partnership with the Dairy Association of Zambia, the non-prot organization hopes to expand the employee purchase program across the African country to all of the 37 dairy cooperatives.

Dairy producers in the Chongwe District have now been able to increase their delivered milk volume by 25 percent, according to Moonga.

“It’s so inspiring to see how dairy farmers have benetted from the bikes,” Moonga said. “At 7 a.m., 50 to 100 people will start gathering at the collecting center with their bikes.”

Michael Juragila, Palabana Dairy Cooperative manager, agreed.

“Our goal is to ght poverty through milk production,” he said. “Time and distance has been our enemy. Now, we’re bridging farmers with the future.”

Situmbeko begins every morning hand milking her small herd of cattle with the help of an employee, Bernard.

Situmbeko is among the majority of dairy producers in Zambia who only milk three to ve cows.

After recording the amount of milk each cow gave – roughly 35 pounds per milking – Situmbeko gives Bernard the OK to travel to the milk collection center.

The widow sells her milk to the Palabana Dairy Cooperative, who contracts transportation of the dairy product with Parmalat.

When dairy producers deliver milk to the collection center, they are paid the current price of $14.65 per hundredweight (cwt.) at the end of the month when the cooperative sells the nal milk product.

“Farmers don’t have to worry about storing the milk because someone else takes care of it,” Moonga said.

While the industry’s infrastructure is limited for small-scale producers, vehicles are used to pick up the milk at the collection centers and a processing facility is able to produce cheese, yogurt and other dairy products.

As Bernard makes his way to the milk collection center by bicycle, Situmbeko tends to the remainder of the chores – gardening, caring for the ock of chickens, and feeding the cows.

“For people in Zambia, dairying cannot be the only income source,” Moonga said. “Most farmers also garden or have other animal enterprises.”

With the sub-tropical climate of Palabana, Situmbeko grows corn – a staple crop in Zambia – for her cows’ daily ration.

Temperatures can range from 59 degrees Fahrenheit (F) during the cold, dry months of May through August, to 90 degrees F in October, which is the hottest month of the year. The seasonal rains atop fertile soils are essential for a promising crop yield.

By the time Situmbeko has completed her afternoon chores, Bernard arrives home to begin evening milking. He will once again make the trip to the collection center with another batch of milk before

the day ends.

Previously, Situmbeko would use the afternoon milk for her own use and then disposes of any that remained.

“Now, I never fail to deliver milk,” she said.

With transportation needs being met, the opportunities are great for Zambia dairy producers and the industry is one Situmbeko remains condent in.

“Previously, the country was dependent on mining and people were focusing

on other industries,” Neiswander said.

“But the dairy sector has huge growth potential.”

Situmbeko agreed.

“I would like to encourage other women, especially widows; we always complain that I can’t do this, can’t do that,” she said. “In my case, I have found this is keeping me going.”

A day in the life of the Wegner family

Aug. 22 lled with herd health, barn construction for Wisconsin family

ETTRICK, Wis. – Whether it is a newborn calf, a clipboard or a new post for her blog, Annaliese Wegner always has something at her ngertips.

Along with her husband, Tom, and his parents, Jeff and Betty Wegner, Annaliese helps care for her family’s 550 cows at Wegnerlann Dairy, LLC. The morning of Aug. 22 began just like any other. As the sun rst began to peek over the hills of their Ettrick, Wis., farm shortly after 5, the Wegners all set out to the barn to

begin their morning chores.

“Mornings are denitely our busiest time around here,” Annaliese said. “Everyone does their part on the farm.”

For Annaliese and Betty, the morning begins by feeding calves. Betty said taking care of the calves has always been a favorite chore of hers.

“I love seeing them grow and progress into the milking herd,” Betty said.

The Wegners purchased a milk taxi earlier this year, which they both agree has greatly improved the efciency of morning feedings.

Jeff said. “We came here to Ettrick because we needed a farm of our own, not wanting to rent any longer.”

The couple settled on the farm with a 50-stall tiestall barn. Until 1995, Jeff and Betty milked 50 cows before building the rst of two hoop barns that doubled their operation.

The next year, a second hoop barn brought the herd size to 150, and that meant switching cows three times per milking.

milk to the calves much easier,” Annaliese said. “It has a hose that dispenses either milk or water, which makes it easy to control and monitor how much each calf is drinking.”

Meanwhile, Tom checks in on the hospital pens while Jeff heads out to the silage pile to begin mixing feed for the milking herd. Established in 1986, Jeff and Betty painted the vision for the farm that has grown into a second-generation family affair.

ConƟnued from WEGNERS | Page 16 a double-8 parallel parlor and the rst half of the farm’s current freestall barn. The herd was expanded to 300 cows before, again expanding to its current size two years later when the second half of the 300- by 120-foot freestall was completed.

“Until this year, the farm has stayed relatively the same,” Jeff said. “Last year, we made the decision to build a second freestall barn, which will be completed this fall.”

After working on designs with the building company for the last year, the Wegners rst moved dirt on the new barn this spring. The barn is nearly identical to the current naturally ventilated, sand bedded freestall barn, but will replace

the outdated hoop barns, add maternity space and allow for herd expansion down the road.

“The hoop barns have served their purpose and served it well, but we are excited for the new barn,” Annaliese said.

As the day continued, Annaliese and Tom went to the barn to sort cows for herd health later that morning. At the same time, the 8 a.m. milking shift arrived to begin bringing cows into the parlor. The Wegners currently employee seven full-time employees and two part-time employees who complete the three milkings that begin at 8 a.m., 4 p.m. and midnight.

ple worked together to check cows and take records for the remainder of the morning. As the farm’s herd manager, Tom said the majority of his day is spent with the cows – and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I like working on the reproduction, fresh cow health and managing the parlor,” Tom said. “Dealing with sick animals, treating them and seeing them feel better is the best part of my day.”

Every afternoon is different for Annaliese and Tom. While Mondays are focused on herd health, Tuesdays and Thursdays mean moving cattle, Wednesdays are spent hoof trimming and Fridays are spent doing a variety of projects that may be going on throughout the farm. The best part about each day, Annaliese explained, is the opportunity to work alongside her husband and family.

“We enjoy being together; it’s not just a job to us but rather a life. I’m with him every day, and we know how hard each of us work,” Annaliese said.

In addition to her work on the farm, Annaliese is a recognizable gure for agricultural advocacy on the web. Her blog, Modern-day Farm Chick, began four years ago to share her life on the farm with her Turn to WEGNERS | Page 19

“I grew up on a farm in Baldwin called Jon-De Farm,” Annaliese said. “I had shared a post online my family mistakenly thought I had written. I hadn’t, but it got me thinking that it was something I could do.”

The blog began as a way for Annaliese to share her day-to-day routine in Ettrick with her family back home. She soon gained followers and established herself across social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. With over 18,000 Facebook followers to date, her goal is not only to share her farm story, but also to grow a positive image of the dairy industry.

As the afternoon and evening rolled in, things began to quiet down for the Wegners. Jeff headed out to haul manure from the hoop barns as Tom and Annaliese nished up herd health. In the house, Betty completed billing and payroll. Each member of the Wegner family has an important role in the dayto-day activities at Wegnerlann Dairy, which, according to Tom, have made it possible to be where they are today.

“Continuing this family farm feels good,” Tom said. “My parents worked hard to get the farm to where we are today, and we both are very thankful to be a part of it.”

The Nuhn Lagoon Crawler is an amphibious vehicle designed for agitating lagoons.

The wheels are able to drop down, giving the vehicle roughly 5 feet of ground clearance. The unit then drives itself into a lagoon, where it turns into an agitation boat.

When in the lagoon, the Lagoon Crawler is powered by a quad port, Nuhn Header Series manure pump. 10000+GPM volumes are used to maneuver the pontoon through the lagoon and agitate the solids from the bottom.

The Nuhn Lagoon Crawler does not need a priming system.

Once the lagoon is emptied, the four wheels are lowered and the machine is able to drive itself out of the lagoon.

Grazing a good t for Gauls Iowa couple raising a family, building equity

FARLEY, Iowa – Cows on Eric and Amanda Gauls’ farm stroll their way to the pastures in style. There’s no mud to contend with – just blacktopped lanes that let the cattle clip-clop out to graze, then come back to the barn for milking.

The Gauls purchased their 160-acre farm in Iowa’s Dubuque County six years ago. They knew right away that they wanted to practice rotational grazing. So one of the rst things they did was see to it that their 160 registered

Holsteins, Jerseys and crossbreds could have easy access to the 80 acres of pasture.

Behind the buildings, this Cadillac of cattle lanes stretches out about four miles, with its branches included, Eric estimated. A paving company spread ground-up asphalt chips, sprayed them with diesel fuel, and packed them with a roller. The process was repeated three or more times, resulting in a tough, long lasting surface.

Eric said he could have opted for gravel, but this way there’s nothing to be washed away by rain. And, there’s no mud, helping the cows stay clean.

The lanes were partly paid for with cost-sharing through the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program). At six feet wide,

Eric and Amanda purchased this farm in 2006 from her parents, Don and Cheryl Kass. The Kasses farm nearby, growing crops and raising dairy heifers.

Eric also met Amanda. In 2003, her parents hosted an open house to show their newly constructed, double-10 milking parlor. Eric’s older brothers, Dale and Jerome, made sure he went to the open house, so Amanda and he could get a rst look at each other.

“Larry Tranel was in on it, too,” Amanda said.

Those matchmaking efforts paid off, even though Amanda was not initially impressed.

“Eric wouldn’t stop talking,” Amanda said. “I thought he was annoying.”

After a chance encounter sometime later, she altered her opinion.

“We haven’t stopped talking. And now we’re milking in the parlor we met in,” Amanda said.

Noah, in his rst year of 4-H, brought home several ribbons. One was for the planter box he built out of old barn boards.

Adam and Claire are too young for 4-H, but they showed kiddie calves.

Amanda is a leader in the Bankston 4-H Friends and is on the county 4-H dairy committee. Eric and Amanda just wrapped up two years as co-presidents of the Dubuque County Dairy Association. The group promotes dairying and dairy products in schools and at events, by way of a team of dairy royalty. Said Amanda, “It’s amazing how kids these days don’t know where milk comes from.”

The Gauls credit their way of farming with letting them have time to devote to 4-H and dairy promotion.

Rotational grazing – letting the cows harvest much of their own feed for six months or longer – frees up both time and money.

Besides pasture, the Gauls grow 59 acres of corn for silage, plus 20 or so acres of hay. Eric noted that they do not own a full line of machinery. There’s no forage chopper, no combine, no planter, no tillage equipment.

Due to the nature of their hybrid farm, they do own a feed mixer. The cows can’t gather all their feed from the 28 paddocks, so a total mixed ration (TMR) lls the gap.

Amanda said that although the cattle might look a bit thin from all the walking they do, they’re in good shape and are milking well. She pegged per-cow average milk production, on twice-a-day milking, at 72 pounds a day. That’s down from the 78 pounds the cows were at before summer’s heat and humidity kicked in.

The Gaul herd produces milk testing at 3.5 percent fat and 3.2 percent protein. The somatic cell count ranges between 100,000 and 150,000, Eric said.

To keep fresh grass in front of the cows, Eric moves a wire after they’ve been in an area for three feedings, or 21 hours. The cows head out to graze at around 8 a.m., come back to the barn for the second milking at 3 p.m., and go out to graze again after that.

Eric’s day starts early. He’s out on his all-terrain vehicle (ATV) at 4 a.m. or sooner. He said he likes checking on the cows when it’s dark and quiet. Along with enjoying the sounds of coyotes howling, and close encounters with ‘possums and skunks, he likes the view.

“You can see all the lights all around,” he said.

Milk prices haven’t been the best lately. Eric estimated that he’s been paid about $14 per hundredweight lately. But he isn’t complaining.

“We’re paying our bills without borrowing,” he said.

Neither Amanda nor Eric work off the farm. But thanks to their way of farming – and a few years of strong milk prices – they’ve been able to pay for 160 cows, plus 140 youngstock.

They’ve also improved the farm. The upright silos came down, replaced by plastic bags for silage.

They also built a shed for commodity feeds, added onto a barn, and leveled some land.

Eric and Amanda have a few goals. One is to help Eric’s younger brother, Kyle, get started dairying, if that’s what he decides to do. Kyle will be a junior at Iowa State University this fall.

Another goal is to keep improving the cows.

Amanda said they might increase the number of registered cows.

A third goal is to help their own children get started in farming in a few years, if they show an interest.

It’s still too early to tell, Amanda said, even as Noah played at farming with a toy tractor and implement on the living room carpet.

One goal Eric and Amanda do not have is to milk more cows. They feel they can do a good job managing their 160.

A longer-term goal is to see the farm reach its 150th year of family ownership. The Gaul farm has been honored for century status, and Amanda said it will qualify as a heritage farm in 26 years, when it will have been in family ownership 150 years.

For now, the Gauls want to keep building equity and enjoying their style of farming.

Said Amanda, “I like that I’m my own boss and I like working outside. And I like raising the kids out here. They’re not glued to the TV or video games.

They know they have work and responsibilities. They know there’s always something to do.”

Added Eric, “Farming is challenging but peaceful. I like seeing the cows outside. This is what I want to do.”

Building their dream Salzls put up barn, start milking 21-cow herd

LITCHFIELD, Minn. – For the rst time in a decade, Cory and Kristen Salzl are nally living their dream.

“We didn’t know if we would ever milk our cows ourselves, but we always wanted to make it happen,” Kristen said.

On Jan. 8, the Salzls moved their 21 cows that had been milked on ve other dair-

ies for 10 years, to their newly built tiestall barn in Meeker County near Litcheld, Minn.

“Everything fell into place,” Cory said.

The Salzls’ 21-cow herd, consisting of mainly Milking Shorthorns with a few Guernseys, Jerseys and Holsteins, is milked twice a day in the new barn.

“All the milking equipment – bulk tank, vacuum pump, compressor and milking units – is used,” Cory said.

“I did some research,” Cory said. “We kept cow comfort in mind.”

With Cory being the

Meeker County Feedlot Ofcer, Kristen being the genetics coordinator at Twin Spruce Dairy and the many other jobs in the industry they each had requiring them travel to farms across the country, they were able to see how other facilities were designed.

“We got a lot of ideas and saw what we wanted,” Cory said.

One of those ideas was installing 3-inch pasture mats in each of the stalls.

“The concrete where the box stalls are matches the concrete on the other side with the tiestalls,” Kristen said. “If we ever wanted to, we could replace the box stalls, with tiestalls and milk more cows. We thought ahead.”

Another design concept the Salzls had was not putting a gutter system in.

The center aisle is at and is scraped with a skidloader each day.

“It was cheaper for us to do that and, it worked better with how our manure management works,” Cory said.

The Salzls stockpile their manure on the west side of the barn.

“We don’t own any cropland, but we’re surrounded by it,” Kristen said.

“In exchange for hauling our manure on our neighbors’ elds, we get free bedding. It’s a pretty good deal.”

Even though they do not own cropland, they do own 30 acres of pasture.

“We started rotationally grazing our cows in May this year,” Kristen said.

Currently, the Salzls are grazing the grasses in the pastures already, but

The Salzls initially looked at the option of turning the pasture acres into cropland, but realized it would not work.

“It’s an old lake bottom the county drained a while back,” Cory said. “The cows are able to walk on it, but we can’t drive a tractor on it. Grazing is the best utilization of that land.”

After they began grazing their herd, they started selling their milk to a creamery in the Twin Cities that markets pasture grazed artisan cheeses.

One of the requirements the creamery has is not feeding fermented feeds and grazing the cows.

“We don’t have fermented feeds, so it worked out perfect for us,” Kristen said.

Besides the grass they consume, the Salzls feed dry hay and minimal grain supplement.

“This is how we wanted to feed,” Cory said.

With their milk being made into cheeses, the Salzls are not only focusing on type traits and production when it comes to breeding.

ing the winter.

“We let them loose in the pole shed to get exercise, though,” Cory said.

While balancing off-farm jobs and the dairy, the Salzls have things set up to make it work.

“We do a lot of the extra jobs like bedding the cows and getting the next paddock ready during evening chores so all we have to do is milk and feed in the mornings before we go to work,” Kristen said.

The Salzls also installed cameras in the barn to watch their cows.

“We can check on the cows and the farm on our phones while we’re away and see if there is one calving or in heat,” Kristen said.

Getting to this point was a long time coming for the Salzls.

They bought the farm 2.5 years ago. The house had sat empty for 10 years and hadn’t been updated since the 1940s. The barn was from the 1890s and had sat empty for 20 years.”

“We didn’t buy a milking facility, that’s for sure,” Kristen said.

The Salzls built a 30- by 60-foot monoslope barn for the show heifers.

“That was our rst project,” Cory said.

Soon after, the Salzls started making improvements to the house themselves.

During that time, the Salzls brought a few of their show cows to the farm to have close by with show season starting up and milking them in the pole shed with a portable milking unit.

“We were milking them like we would at the county fair for a few months and feeding all the milk to bull calves,” Kristen said. “After a few months of that, we gured we needed to go all in or all out. We decided to go all

In order to get a loan to build a new barn, the Salzls nished the upgrades to the house themselves to increase their appraisal value.

“We created sweat equity. That helped us get the loan,” Kristen said.

They began working with a con-

tractor in the fall of 2015, demolished the old barn in September and started building in October.

Once the barn was nished and the cows in on Jan. 8, the Salzls milked their herd for the rst time.

“I have tons of pictures of milk going in the bulk tank for the rst time,”

Kristen said. “It was like liquid gold.”

Even though they have a few projects left to do, they are happy to be where they are – milking cows.

“We’re nally milking selling our own milk for the rst time in 10 years,” Cory said. “It’s what we always wanted.”

This is a great selection of high quality well uddered cows. They currently have a 60-70 lb. tank average and consistently are under 200,000 in somatic cell count. The majority of the herd is third lactation and younger. The cows and heifers are bred for udders and type. Cows are on a low grain, high forage ration. They are rotationally grazed during the summer and fed a TMR mix during the winter and housed in a freestall barn.

“The is a very healthy group of cows. They are high quality and well uddered,” said Nick Kerzman.

Kerzman has been dairying with his wife, Cheryl and son, Reid, for the past 28 years near Bluffton, Minn.

Everything is good, and we’ve been getting a good amount of rain over the last two weeks.

We plan to cut our third crop hay later this week. It’s been hard to bale hay up here because it’s been so humid, which makes for poor drying weather. As for the corn, it looks OK. Some fields where the corn made it through the floods doesn’t look too bad.

I would say probably a quarter of the farms around here had to replant their corn, though.

Of the plants that are standing, we have foot-long ears and are probably three weeks to a month away from starting to chop. Everyone is combining and finishing up barley, oats and winter wheat right now, too.

It has been really wet up here. The fields aren’t to the point where you cannot dry, but they are very well saturated. We are in the middle of fourth crop hay, but it’s been hard to wrap it up with the amount of rain we have received. We are hoping we can finish by the end of this week (the week of Aug. 22). We are getting very close to harvesting corn silage. We would like to be chopping by Sept. 9 or 10. The soybeans are doing good, too. We haven’t had any fungus in our fields, but we are watching it. Everything seems to be on track, just needs a little more time.

There has been some white mold around but not in our fields, at least. We had a big storm two weeks ago that brought 4 inches of rain with it, and we haven’t really dried up from that. It’s been raining every other day, so we haven’t done hay again yet. We are a couple weeks out from chopping corn silage. I heard from the ASCS office this week and they said we have some of the best corn around here. The beans are thick and heavy, but closer to Marathon County they have been spraying fungicide for white mold.

100 cows, 400 acres I looked at my corn silage and it’s 8 to 10 days out.

Our custom guy said he started chopping today but that was just on a knob. I finished my third crop hay last Thursday (Aug. 18). It was a good crop; I will start on fourth next week. We plan to chop it. I got my oats done and it was the best crop I ever had. It ran 119 bushels an acre and I sold four loads and the test weight was 34, 33, 33 and 30, respectively.

We are planning to chop corn this weekend; it’s 70 percent moisture. We try to get the moisture in the 65 to 67 range. We put it RAINFALL in a bunker and chopped TOTALS around 145 acres. The Last 2 corn looks really good.

Weeks It will be exciting to see when the crop adjuster comes out. I got fourth crop hay done a couple weeks ago. The crop was really good. We planted a conventional corn with silage characteristics so we can go either way Since April 1 17.75” with it.

It is very, very wet around here. I am hoping to start cutting my fourth crop hay at the end of this week if the weather is nice. The corn looks very, very good.

We should be able to start harvesting in two to three weeks. The corn has already started to dent, and I’ve looked at some ears that are mostly dented. I don’t have any soybeans, but what I’ve seen in the area looks to be good. Other farmers I know in the area say they are very tall and will be a bumper crop.

All of our small grains are done being harvested.

Things are well-saturated but doing well. Up until this weekend, we have had high temperatures with high humidity. I just spoke with our nutritionist this week, and we are seeing corn maturing fast and beginning to dent down. The leaves and the stalks are still very green, so there is a lot of moisture in them. I don’t see us starting to chop for two to three weeks yet. I think once the leaves start to dry, we are going to have to get at it to get the most feed value from the plant. Hay is looking good – I notice some alfalfa from third crop that hadn’t been harvested yet because of all the rain. I think it is going to be hard to find quality third crop hay from this area because we have had the humidity and showers come through.

Sunshine produces crops, electricity Thickes, Crowleys use solar panels to power organic, grazing dairy

LA CRESCENT, Minn.

– High on the bluffs above the Mississippi River, near the town of La Crescent, Minn., a herd of 90 Ayrshire cows graze on the grass along the sloped and hilly landscape of Enchanted Meadows Organic Dairy Farm. Because of the farm’s organic grazing management style, the cows do most of the harvesting; however, within the past year, the dairy has been harvesting a new type of crop: sunshine.

Less than a year ago, solar panels were added to the dairy

as an alternative energy source.

The enterprise is owned by Art and Jean Thicke, and has been in the Thicke family for over 85 years. Chad and Melissa Crowley, and their three children, Dylan, 13, Jessica, 10, and Erin,8, help operate the farm on a partnership basis with Art and Jean; and three years ago, the Crowleys purchased an ownership position.

Daily operations include animal care for 90 milking cows, along with 28 bred heifers and 28 heifer calves; plus, the management and working of 230 acres of cropland. The farm became certied organic in 2005, and in 2008 they be-

Much of the cropland is pasture, needed to help feed the cows in a rotational grazing program; moving from pasture to pasture over seven months of the year. It is sunshine that helps produce the grasses and other crops on this farm, through the process of photosynthesis. This is the means by which plants convert sunlight into energy for growth. And, it is the sun that is now being harnessed to produce a new crop on this farm. This new crop is electricity; which is produced through the process

of photovoltaic systems, commonly known as solar cells, that convert sunlight directly into electricity. The simplest form of solar cells are used to power small electronic calculators.

“Energy efciency has been one of our objectives for years since electricity costs are always rising,” Art Thicke said. “We have installed LED lighting in our house and farm buildings, and we’ve been studying solar and other renewable energy producing technologies for some time.

From the research and number crunching that I’ve done, it was clear that solar was the

ideal technology.”

They met with a local solar power design and installation business, owned by Paul Kreidermacher, that specializes in agricultural facilities, and quickly made the decision to add the alternative energy source to their farm.

“As solar technology has advanced, and material and installation costs have declined, and as nancial incentives have improved, the time was right for us to make this investment,” Thicke said.

The total project includes two solar electric systems.

A second 20-kilowatt system provides electrical power at the Crowleys’ house nearby, and the heifer barn at that location.

Each system includes groundmounted arrays of solar panels positioned south-facing. The panels are xed at a 35-degree slope angle for maximum exposure to the sun, and easy run-off of rain or melting snow.

The 40-kilowatt system at the Thicke location is comprised of four arrays. Each array consists of a top and bottom row of panels, with 14 to 16 panels in each row. Each individual solar panel measures approximately 3- by 6.5-feet in size. There are three arrays of 32 solar panels, and one array of 28 panels; for a total of 124 solar panels.

The 20-kilowatt system at the Crowley location consists of two arrays, with 32 solar panels on each array.

All of the solar panels and equipment installed are of the highest efciency and quality on the market.

Sunlight is composed of photons.

When sunlight is in contact with the photovoltaic solar cells, these photons are absorbed within two layers of silicon semiconductors. An electron ow is excited between these layers of silicon, and this ow of electrons creates

state level, but, at the federal level, there is currently a 30 percent federal tax credit and a ve-year depreciation schedule for solar systems. And, an application can be submitted for a USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grant that, if awarded, will cover up to 25 percent of a project’s cost,” he said.

Those incentives along with wanting to be energy self-sufcient were big reasons why the Thickes and Crowleys went ahead with the project.

“The power created by these solar systems cover all of the electric needs for the houses and farm buildings at both locations, reducing our carbon footprint and improving the overall sustainability of our farm,” Thicke said.

At certain times of the year when the farm is producing additional power, the extra energy will be put onto the grid for others to use.

“Meters record the amount of electricity produced, used on location and transferred to the electric power grid.

We have all of the data and information needed to justify the investment, and to track the return on that investment for years to come,” Thicke said.

Kreidermacher said using solar power is virtually risk-free.

“There are no moving or wearable parts within a solar power system. And solar is long-life, at 30-plus years with most panel manufacturers providing a 25-year performance warranty,” he said.

He also described the system as low maintenance.
