BROOKINGS, S.D. – The 2018 North American Manure Expo was held Aug. 15-16 at the Swiftel Center in Brookings, S.D. More than 70 exhibitors were on hand to display the latest in manure handling tools and manurerelated products.

Experts were on hand to give informative talks about manure-related environmental and safety issues. Later that afternoon, a number of informative sessions were held.

The topics of these sessions included a manure pump school, a symposium about composting manure, a talk about maximizing nitrogen in manure and Dr. Melissa Wilson a session Extension manure on how to management & water turn maquality specialist nure biosolids into fertilizer.

souri has operated its Sanborn Field agricultural experiment station for 130 years. Over several decades, all the crop residue was removed from certain plots. The organic matter in the soils of those plots decreased. In the 1980s, the university began to apply manure to the plots to see what effect it had on organic matter.

“With the application of manure, we were able to restore the organic matter in the soils of the plots to their pre1915 levels,” Lim said.

Lim stressed the effects of organic matter on soils cannot be underestimated.

“For every 1 percent increase in organic matter in the top six inches of soil, you increase its water holding capacity by 27,000 gallons of water per acre,” Lim said. “This is equivalent to one inch of rain-

The University of Missouri has conducted long-term experiments to measure the effects commercial fertilizers and manure fertilizers have on cropping systems such as continuous corn.

“The soils that have been fertilized with manure have shown a big increase in soil health compared to those that were treated with commercial fertilizer,” Lim said. “The soils that had manure applied to them contain more organic carbon and the crops that grow on them appear to be healthier.

LYNDON STATION, Wis. – Farm accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, the result of one second of not being careful enough, one small lapse in judgement. Most times, farm accidents also occur in less than ideal situations, in elds that are not easily lo-

cated and are without good vehicle access for ambulances or in an unsterile environment.

Fortunately for the farming community, health care practitioners are cognizant of these problems and see the need for working with members of the Emergency Medical Services to help provide training for emergencies.

In addition to the rst responders and re department, all other EMS departments in Juneau County were invited, along with staff from area hospitals and two medical ight doctors. University of WisconsinHealth Partners specialists used the two farm injury scenarios to discuss proper protocols with EMS members.

“Realistically, fewer and fewer EMS and hospital staff have practical experience about what types of conditions they might be working with on a farm,” Troy said. “Most often when a farm accident happens, it’s going to be in less-than-ideal locations, and it could be outdoors in inclement weather.”

The scenarios used for training purposes at the Madland farm were focused on the upcoming fall harvest, centered around accidents involving a combine. The rst scenario involved a subject with an arm caught in a combine head. The second scenario involved the operator of the combine who got caught getting out of the combine and was hanging alongside the machine.

“The participants got to actually see what a combine looks like close up, how big it is and the size of the moving parts,” Troy said. “They were able to see how those parts move, and how these accidents can happen.”

Once the scenarios were set up using training mannequins, the UW-Health specialists ran though the proper protocols for those who are the rst on the scene to use when assessing the traumas.

“The focus was on stopping bleeding, the use of a tourniquet, intubating and eld amputation was covered,” Troy said.

Whitney said the EMS members beneďƒžted from the partnership with the UWHealth because of the different skills sets and areas of expertise those doctors brought to the simulations. “Having those experts on site allows our EMS personnel to go through the scenarios, ensuring they are up-to-date on proper protocols for addressing these types of injuries,â€? Whitney said.

Sandy expressed a new appreciation for the community EMS and medical staff, watching the teaching simulations played out, particularly what the priorities are and the importance of staying calm during these situations. “I learned some things about ďƒžrst aid that might be valuable someday,â€? Sandy said. “Us on the farm are really the ďƒžrst people on the scene if something like this happens.

They said use anything you have to stop bleeding ‌ and that they can take care of the infection later.�

The Madlands were approached to host the training because of Troy’s connection with the Lyndon Station Fire

Department. They both expressed a willingness to host future training events on their farm. There are more scenarios Whitney has planned to run in future training experiences. “There are so many injuries that can happen on a farm,â€? Troy said. “I know we’ve talked about doing trainings with electrical and manure accidents. Dr. Whitney’s farm and military background gives him the understanding on what types of ďƒželd trainings can beneďƒžt the EMS providers.â€?

In addition to the farm trauma training, Whitney has conducted ďƒželd training for water rescues and has plans for both ďƒželd and classroom training for things including stroke care, athletic injuries, drug overdose, and hunting related injuries and accidents involving ballistics and deer stands.

For all of his trainings, Whitney invites all EMS and hospital staff. “It makes for a more ďƒ&#x;uid training if those involved in all stages of care are involved,â€?

Pricing standing forage From time to time, farmers want to buy or sell standing forage. A key is the agreement on price. Following are several factors which should be considered when calculating a value for standing forage.

Price – Price reects weather and yield risk. Price also reects the cost of alternative feeds that could include commercial hay purchases delivered. Generally, prices show a seasonal decline at rst cutting unless there have been signicant losses of hay stands due to drought or winterkill, or low inventories due to problems during the previous growing season.

Risk - Lower than expected yields or rain or weather delays that lower forage quality can greatly reduce the net gain of purchasing standing hay. Producers need to adjust the numbers in the example below to reect current market conditions, yield, and harvest timeliness. The value of risk is difcult to estimate but can be based on a typical value of the desired hay quality. For example, high-quality alfalfa hay may average

Contracts signed well before harvest and full-season contracts should reect a lower price due to UW-Madison the level of yield risk and quality loss that the buyer is assuming. In contrast, an agreement made close to harvest would be much closer to the current hay price because the buyer knows the value and status of the crop being purchased. A rule of thumb is to value risk at 20 percent of hay value.

Yield – Yield can be estimated before harvest from historic records or from stand evaluations. Stand evaluations can estimate yield potential. If the alfalfa stand has at least 55 stems/sq. ft., one can estimate yield to be 126 lbs. dry matter/ ac per inch of height (e.g., 24” height x 126 lbs/ac = 3,024 lbs/ac). Thinner stands will have proportionately lower yields. Sales based on actual yield minimize risk for both buyer and seller. Actual yield can be determined by weighing loads or estimated by weighing a few bales or wagon/truck loads and counting total bales/ wagons/trucks harvested.

The moisture content of the haylage, if chopped for silage, would have to be determined to convert to a dry hay equivalent. This step simplies pricing and price comparisons.

Dry Matter Loss in Storage - This is loss attributed to respiration or the curing process after harvest and is approximately 2 percent for hay and 10 percent for silage.

Quality - Timeliness of cutting and the percentage of alfalfa versus weeds in the stand will impact forage quality. A dense, clean stand of pure alfalfa should be of higher value and would deserve a premium in a competitive forage market

when compared to an older stand with weeds. Forage samples can provide better estimates of harvested quality for ration balancing than visual inspection of the hay crop.

Harvest Costs - Price determination can start with calculating the minimum price a seller would want to receive and the maximum price a buyer would be willing to pay. The example is three cuttings sold to a buyer who also harvests the forage (total 3-cut yield estimated at 4 tons/acre).

Seller’s Minimum Price (annual costs/ac): Land Charge (4-6% of land value, e.g., $3,500/ac x .05) $175/ac Est. & Maintain Stand (seed, fertilizer, lime) $230/ac Total Annual Cost of Established Alfalfa $405/ac Note that the seller needs to recover the cost of fertilizer and insecticide applied or at least the value of nutrients removed.

Buyer’s Maximum Price: Market value of hay (4 tons x $200/ton) $800 Subtracting harvest expenses per acre: Cut, Rake, Bale, Haul, ($60/harvest, 3 cuttings) -$180 Weather Risk ($30/cutting) - $90 Dry matter loss (2% for hay) - $16 Price for Standing Hay/ac $514 Both buyer and seller would like to gain in this sale. This means negotiating a price between $405 and $514 per acre for 3 cuttings or proportionately less for fewer cuttings. If a single harvest is purchased, the seller’s and buyer’s prices can be proportioned according to actual yield or percentage of total yield expected in any one cutting (see table).

Pettit hauls cattle at 90 years old

Still truckin’

LORETTO, Minn. – Like clockwork, Andy Pettit arrives at Central Livestock in Albany, Minn., unloads a few head of cattle and makes his way to the sales arena. He claims his spot in the stands with a bottle of Pepsi and spends the afternoon keeping track of the auction.

“I think I’m the oldest one here,” Pettit said.

At 90 years old and 7 months, Pettit hauls cattle and other livestock to sales barns throughout Minnesota. He also brings cattle purchased at the auctions to their respective farms.

Pettit’s interest in trucking cattle began at the age of 2, when he rode along with his father, Andrew.

“That was my rst trip down to the South St. Paul Stockyards. Dad started hauling in 1924, and by 16 I was doing it, too,” said Pettit, who took over his father’s business in 1984.

In a typical week, Pettit will make trips to sales barns in southern and central Minnesota.

Dairy farmers call Pettit the evening before they have a small load needing to be transported.

Using his trusty pickup truck – with more than 230,000 miles recorded – and an 18-year-old cattle trailer, Pettit provides transportation for dairy farmers. Not only does he haul to and from sales barns, but also delivers animals to county fairs.

“A tornado went through and took the house, barn and garage, but the truck and trailer were ne,” said Pettit of the 2005 storm. “It loosened up the trailer and bent the fender, but that trailer never came unhooked from the truck.”

If possible, Pettit will make stops on multiple farms, lling up the trailer, before arriving at his destination.

“A lot of farmers are gone now,” Pettit said. “Two years ago, I was hauling twice a week, and sometimes had to make multiple trips for one farm. Now, it’s down to one load a week or even one load every other week.”

“I’ve always had a good sense of direction,” he said. “A lot of streets are in alphabetical order, or I can keep track of the numbers in streets and know which roads to take. And, I think hauling keeps my mind sharp.”

Once Pettit arrives at the sales barn and unloads the cattle, he enjoys spending the remainder of his day at the auction.

“I mark down what the cattle go for and also keep track of the weights for the farmers,” Pettit said. “It’s good therapy for my hands, because of the carpal tunnel.”

A lot has changed in the hauling business since Pettit hauled his rst load in 1943, 75 years ago.

Transporting cattle was a trade often tackled jointly with picking up milk.

Pettit’s father had a milk route, where he would pick up cans at 40 different farms and deliver the product to Franklin Cooperative and Clover Leaf Creameries in Minneapolis.

When milk delivery was complete, the Pettits would then circle back to farms and haul cattle to the St. Paul Stockyards in St. Paul, Minn.

“We would use the same truck for both routes,” Pettit said.

World forage contest deadline fast approaching Forage growers are encouraged to submit samples for the 2018 World Forage Analysis Superbowl before the ďƒžnal entry deadline of Thursday, August 30.

Contest categories with this deadline include baleage, commercial hay, dairy hay, grass hay and haylage.

Held in conjunction with World Dairy ExpoÂŽ, the World Forage Analysis Superbowl evaluates seven forage categories on visual and lab analysis - the ďƒžve listed previously, as well as standard corn silage and brown midrib corn silage, which were submitted at an earlier date. DCRC waves the ‘green ag’ for its annual meeting registration Indianapolis, home of the century-old, 500-mile automobile race, will host the 2018 Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council (DCRC) Annual Meeting, Nov.14-16.

The council “waved a green ag” to symbolize the start of its race to the annual meeting and just opened its annual meeting registration website. This year’s meeting reverts to the traditional DCRC format of core meeting dates on Thursday and Friday.

Tips to consider when stacking and storing hay this season No matter what materials hay producers choose to bind forage with, the method of storage throughout the summer, into the fall and winter is important to maintaining forage quality, as well as minimizing waste and simultaneously cost of production.

To maximize quality and minimize waste, read on to learn some researchbased tips on forage storage put together by Taylor Grussing, SDSU Extension Cow/Calf Field Specialist and Karla Hernandez, SDSU Extension Forages Field Specialist.

Factors affecting outside storage losses Bale density: With dry hay (moisture at 10-20 percent), the denser the bale, the lower the amount of spoilage. The density of round bales should be a minimum of 10 pounds of hay per cubic foot.

Field operations: Uniform swaths, sized to match the recommendations of the baler, will help produce uniform and dense hay bales.

Reduce outdoor storage loss with these tips: Outdoor hay storage, increased precipitation results in greater chance for storage losses. Stacking and storage methods noted below can help reduce outside storage loss.

Stacking: Bales should be removed from harvest areas as soon as possible in order to allow for uniform regrowth and potentially more cuttings - depending on the forage type. Round bales that are stacked alongside harvest areas should be orientated at end to at end, in north and south rows. Stacking east and west will cause deterioration on the north-facing surfaces if not used before next summer.

Stacks should be placed in well drained, non-shaded areas to prevent spoilage.

It is recommended to leave three feet between rows to provide adequate air ow, sun exposure for drying and reduce excess moisture accumulation.

Reduce hay re danger: If removing hay from the eld and stacking in a hay yard, make sure bales are cool and dry to eliminate any potential heating and re danger.

Storage: There are many storage options for hay. The more protected the storage option, typically the greater the expense. However, when penciling out expenses, the price of wasted hay isn’t cheap.

Depending on how much hay is harvested and used each year, it may be cost effective to improve hay storage methods.

The public is invited to a Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship Summer Fling Pasture Walk 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Benrud’s Organic Dairy Farm in Goodhue, Minn. The main focus will be on pasture production to improve farm economics. Jim Paulson from Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship, Dan Nath from NRCS, and Vance Haugen, retired University of Wisconsin Extension Agent, will help us discuss pasture production nancials and forage ideas for the Benrud Farm. Before lunch, we will briey discuss current dairy farming pressures and hear results from an ongoing study looking at nancial performance of dairy grazing farms in four states. We will also learn about the new rainfall insurance available to us. Afternoon discussion will be out in the pasture. This is an organic, all grass dairy farm.

We will be examining the forage stands and discussing actions to thicken the sward, improve quality and increase tonnage of feed for the cows. These topics directly inuence the overall farm nancial success.

Taking current hay prices into account, last year’s decreased forage production and future forage needs, storage options may need to be re-evaluated sooner than later.

While building a barn may not be realistic this summer, take note of current stacking methods, and see if changes can be made this year to decrease waste.

In addition, document current hay inventory (accounting for some waste) and compare this to the winter hay needs of the cowherd.

If additional forage needs to be sourced, be sure to purchase quality hay conrmed with a nutrient analysis.

Lastly, begin tracking hay waste each year and compare the cost of wasted hay to the cost of improving hay storage on your farm long term.

Make a smooth transition to new corn silage Opening up new silage is commonly associated with a dip in milk production, but the transition can be smoother — and less costly for producers — with a few easy xes.

“In the fall, producers often tell us they see a drop in milk production,” says Renato Schmidt, Ph.D., Technical Services – Forage. “This is usually due to an abrupt change from old corn silage to recently fermented corn silage. It takes a little planning to ease this transition, but it’s worth it to maintain peak milk production.”

Producers can make adjustments at harvest, during ensiling and after the new silage is opened.

During harvest, Dr. Schmidt recommends adding a proven silage inoculant containing enzymes, like Biotal® Buchneri 500.

Inoculants with high activity enzymes can help break down plant ber, which improves ber digestibility. The product label should clearly indicate guaranteed levels validated by independent research studies.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) — like Lactobacillus buchneri NCIMB 40788 and Pediococcus pentosaceus 12455 — in silage inoculants also help initiate a fast, efcient fermentation immediately after ensiling, which works to help prevent milk production drops by maintaining feed quality.

After ensiling, Dr. Schmidt recommends waiting until the starch is more digestible to open. Ideally, producers should wait at least four months before feeding. This is particularly important for forage harvested above 35 percent dry matter (DM) and/or int corn varieties.

When producers are ready to open the new silage, make the transition gradual and adjust the ration to balance changes in dry matter (DM) and nutrient content. Switch silages over a 10- to 14day period. New silage can be introduced as 25 percent of the silage portion of the ration in the rst three days, then 50 percent of the ration the next three days, and so on until the transition is complete.

“It’s important to have the new silage analyzed during the transition,” Dr. Schmidt recommends. “The analysis undertaken covers fermentation prole, NDF digestibility and starch digestibility, plus the associated rate values. Forage can range in composition among silage structures and between years. What you harvested last year can have a different nutrient value than the new forage. Part of the fall slump is cattle reacting to those changes in the feedstuff composition. Testing and adjusting the ration can help minimize uctuations.”

During the transition from old to new silage, herds are particularly vulnerable to Sub Acute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA) due to high levels of fermentable sugars in the silage. SARA is a sustained period of time with lowered pH levels in the rumen. When rumen pH dips below 6, cellulolytic bacterial activity is decreased and ber digestion are impaired.1 As a result, milk production and feed efciency can suffer.2,3 Supplementing feed with an active dry yeast (ADY) probiotic helps increase pH and improve ber digestibility in the rumen.

Results from multiple trials show cows fed a specic strain of ADY, Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-1077, had an increase of 2.1 pounds of 3.5 percent fat-corrected milk (FCM) and were more efcient than controls.4 “When SARA occurs, it’s difcult for cows to make the best use of any ration — no matter how expertly analyzed or carefully introduced,” Dr. Schmidt says. “There’s no substitute for making a smooth transition from old to new silage, but a proven probiotic can help optimize the rumen environment and maintain peak performance even during changes to the ration.”

JWO NOTES & MARKET REPORT: Sold 12 lots varying quality grass hay $30-55 per bale. Nice top cows $1,400 Robert Lang, Marathon, $1,400 Amos Yoder, Abbotsford. Still a very challenging market with many good dairy cows selling $700-1,100. Top Springing hfrs to $1,200, but mostly $750-1,050. We had our first market cattle sale, 104 cull cows sold mostly $.42-.55. One of our main heifer buyers, Linus (Bumper) Kuennen, 68, was killed in a tractor roll over Aug 16th while brush hogging on his farm. Another reminder to us that the call of death is so sudden, solemn and final. 3 things that came to mind when thinking about Bumper, he always paid on time and in full, he used some words that should never cross Christian lips, and almost without fail he signed off our phone calls with a cheery, “Lord Willing, I’ll see you sale day.”
