A legacy in dairy Dodge County Dairy Princesses are sixth generation farmers Staff Intern
HAYFIELD, Minn. – A dairy legacy is strong in both families of the 2019 Dodge County Dairy Princesses. “Even today, four generations still work together on the farm,” said 20-year-old Katrina Thoe, the daughter of Susie and Jeff Thoe. Valerie Sauder agreed. “To me, agriculture is a legacy,” she said. “Every day I see the elds, barns and cows, and realize that the life I live was the dream of my greatgreat-grandfather. It’s because of generations of hard work that I am lucky enough to call this place home and to be a part of producing food for others.” Sauder, 19, is the daughter of Stan and Amy Sauder. Together, both Sauder and Thoe are sixth-generation farmers in Dodge County, and are also this year’s county dairy princesses. Thoe lives and works on her family’s farm where they milk 60 cows in a stanchion barn near Hayeld, Minn. They also farm 900 acres of peas, corn, soybeans, sweet corn and alfalfa. On the farm, Thoe milks cows, feeds calves, picks rock, and rakes, bales and hauls hay. Sauder lives on Pine-Shel-
ter Farms, a century farm, near Pine Island, Minn. There, they milk 500 cows in a double-9 herringbone parlor and 60 cows in the original tiestall barn. Her three uncles, Dave, Duane and Rick Alberts, own the farm, but there are about 20 family members involved. On the farm Sauder feeds calves, milks, and works with the show heifers and cows. The Thoe family farm started in 1857 when Jacob Thoe, emigrated from Norway. Originally, he settled in Kasson, Minn., but his cattle were loose in the oat elds so he moved farther south. Jacob was a mason and built the church, log cabins and their barn in 1873. From there, the Thoe family farm has grown in their passion for cows, changing the farm name to Nifty Holsteins and valuing the sustainability and comfort of their cows. “The name was chosen after Mom’s Palomino quarter horse that she had in high school,” Thoe said. “We think of each of the cows as individuals rather than a herd accomodating to each of the cows needs and letting them out on grass twice a day to eat as much as their hearts desire.” It has been Thoe’s involvement on her family’s dairy farm that led her to pursue a degree in nursing at Winona State University.

She is the 20-year-old daughter of Susie and Jeff Thoe. “One evening I went out to milk in a terrible rainstorm; I was the rst to the barn so I put feed down for the cows and then I heard meowing coming from outside the barn. A farm cat had kittens and put them in a spot which could easily be ooded so I brought them inside and dried off,” Thoe said. “That’s the moment I realized that I loved caring and helping other living things and was a big reason why I am going to be a nurse.” Thoe is a junior and an athlete on the college’s track and eld team participating in the javelin, weight throw, hammer and discus. “As an athlete, I incorpo-

rate dairy in my diet on a daily basis. I use it to refuel after workouts and recommend it to my teammates,” Thoe said. “In nutrition class we learned that chocolate milk has the perfect balance of electrolytes to protein, which is needed after a workout.” Thoe is thankful for the time spent on her farm with family. “As kids we really made fun out of anything really,” Thoe said. “We would sneak away from Grandma’s and see the cows, play on the hay swing, make forts, play hide and seek in the hay bales, and try to catch tadpoles.” Thoe enjoys sharing that

every farm is unique and special, and that farmers love what they do. However, she understands that listening is an important skill, as well. “It’s fun to see their faces light up after giving away free ice cream and sharing a little about your farm,” Thoe said. “But I like being fully aware of their side of the story before I answer their questions.” Thoe has enjoyed her summer as a princess and is thankful for time spent at her favorite events, like the leadership event in May, Rochester Honkers game and the county fair. Val Sauder is the sixth generaƟon on her family’s 500-cow dairy, Pine Shelter Farms, near Pine Island, Minn. Sauder, the 19-year-old daughter of Stan and Amy Sauder, is currently serving as a Dodge County Dairy Princess. “At the May event I met a lot of new friends in the dairy industry and the Honkers game was long and hot, but we made the most of it,” Thoe said. Sauder’s family farm began in the late 1800s when her great-great-grandfather, Hiram Alberts Jr., began milking cows on the farmstead they still use today. Their registered herd began when Hiram’s son, Lloyd, purchased four registered Holsteins from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in1919. “All of the cows on our farm can trace their maternal line back to these four cows,” Sauder said. Sauder’s grandfather, Kenneth, and his brother, Myron, formed the Alberts Brothers partnership and the Pine-Shelter prex that has since been passed down to Sauder’s mother and uncles. Advocating for dairy and agriculture has been a passion of Sauder’s, nding opportunities to do so through volunteering at the Minnesota State Fair, leading local workshops, attending conferences, participating in dairy-related events through FFA and 4-H, and talking about agriculture whenever she gets the chance. “Being able to show at the fair has always been one of my favorite things to do,” Sauder said. “I started showing in the novice calf class when I was 3, and it was the highlight of every summer.” Sauder has also been attending dairy princess banquets most of her life, hoping to serve in the position one day. “My mother and my seven older cousins were all a part of the program, and at rst, I just couldn’t wait to follow in their footsteps,” said Sauder, who is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where she studies agriculture education and agricultural communication and marketing. However, as Sauder grew older, she realized why this position is important to farmers and learned her ability to communicate for the community she is passionate about. “When someone asks how I became a princess, I get to share my love for dairy cows, how hard farm families like mine work every day to put a glass of milk on their table, and how much we care about our animals and the safety of the product we produce,” Sauder said. “My experience growing up on a farm gives me the credibility to answer their questions relating to how we farm and how milk is produced. I love having the opportunity to shed light on a topic that many people don’t have the rst-hand experience with.” As a dairy princess Sauder is thankful for her role in the dairy community. “To me, one of the biggest challenges is facing opposition gracefully. There
will always be people who disagree with you, especially on a topic like agriculture. No matter how much experience you have or how many scientic facts you know, someone will try to argue. That’s OK. What matters is the way you handle the opposition,” Sauder said. “You can’t always change someone’s mind, but you can nd common ground and build a relationship.” Sauder’s two favorite messages to share are that farmers care, and milk is safe, healthy and nutritious. “These points are closely related, but I think they are the points consumers care the most about,” Sauder said. “Consumers want to trust farmers, and they want to trust that their food is safe. By talking about those two messages, we can build trusting relationships between consumers and the people behind their food.” As dairy princesses, Sauder and Thoe have participated in parades, bank appreciation days and the county fair. “My favorite was when I had the chance to visit a summer school program and talk to kindergarteners through fourth graders about dairy nutrition. We talked about how healthy milk is, did an activity to see what cows eat, and even got to pet a calf from my farm,” Sauder said. “It was a great day.” Even off the farm, Sauder is thankful for encouraging support from her family. “My mom is my biggest supporter. She helps me practice speeches and think of ideas for my next workshop, and takes a lot of pictures whenever she has the chance,” Sauder said. “The same goes for my dad and my sisters. Their support is key to having success in this role.” When the dairy princesses think of their time on the farm, they instantly go back to the life lessons they learned. “I wouldn’t be where I am without my family,” Sauder said. “My uncles are the ones who really helped instill a love of the farm in me, from letting me follow them around and help in the barns when I was little to bringing me with for meetings, workshops and expos where I could learn more.” Thoe agreed. “My dad always taught me how to use your head. He’s constantly thinking of new ways to do things. He always said you have to be ready and on your toes,” she said. “My grandpa and dad told me to be in the moment and reminded me to look around at the beauty. We have a lot of pride in what we do [as farmers].” From a long legacy of dairy farmers, these princesses are ready to take on what lies ahead and share their passion for dairy.

ConƟnued from UDDER STUFF | Page 8 Delivering child care in agricultural communities New resource provides road map to keep kids safe while parents work At a time when agricultural employers are struggling to nd workers, access to quality child care can aid in worker recruitment, improve retention and boost employee morale. A new resource, “Roadmap for delivering child care in agricultural communities,” can help ensure that children of workers are kept safely away from dangers on the farm. “Providing adequate child care services for farm workers is benecial to both employers and workers, as well as the children,” said Barbara Lee, Ph.D., director, National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. “Making sure the children of workers are kept safely away from dangers on the farm can improve productivity, reduce absenteeism, and improve public relations.” The resource, developed with input from agricultural business owners, human resources directors, insurance providers, Head Start child care specialists and farm worker parents, is part of the, “Protecting Children While Parents work in
Agriculture” project, an initiative of the National Children’s Center and Migrant Clinicians Network. Funding is provided by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. “The Roadmap is designed to assist individuals and organizations in identifying challenges and assets within their local regions regarding child care services for children of agricultural workers,” said Lee, one of the Roadmap’s contributors. “This local knowledge, combined with the references and resources in the Roadmap, will pave the way for developing an action plan that can help foster access to child care.” The Roadmap will walk stakeholders through each step on the road to accessible child care. It breaks down the processes of conducting a needs assessment, building a team of stakeholders, identifying funding sources, and implementing and marketing new child care services to those in the community. Utilizing community resources and links to existing organizations and featured model programs, the workbook will guide businesses to implement the services needed to cultivate their growing community.
