Vetsches convert tiestall into parlor

BROWERVILLE, Minn. – Milking 180 cows in a tiestall barn became too much for Loren and Elizabeth Vetsch to handle.

“Milking 34 cows was not enough to feed a family, so we built a freestall barn in 2009 and started milking 100 cows,” Loren said. “Last year, we were milking in six shifts in the tiestall barn and that was too much. That is when we decided to add a parlor.”

In September 2017, the Vetsches built a double-8 parallel parlor retrotted into their tiestall barn on their farm, Vetsch Farms LLC., in Todd County near Browerville, Minn.

The couple and their children – Mackenzie, 7, Izaak, 5, Emily, 2, and Lindsey, 6 months – hosted a University of Minnesota Extension Dairy Field Day July 31 to showcase their retrotted barn. More than 50 attendees were present at the tour.

“With the transition, we are milking in just over two hours with two people. Before, it took over three hours to milk with two to three people,” said Loren, who worked with his uncle, Keith, Turn to VETSCHES | Page 4

The parlor includes immediate-release headlocks, heated oors and fans to keep the area cool, as well as milking units with touch screens.

“The screens on the units tell us pounds of milk, temperature and will warn milkers of a high somatic cell count,” Elizabeth said.

For eight weeks while the parlor was being constructed, the herd was milked outdoors.

“I am so happy that is over,” Elizabeth said.

When the Vetsches built the parlor, they left room for a facility expansion, if they would ever need it.

“Our parlor is set up so we can expand to a double-12 parlor some day,” Elizabeth said.

Since the Vetsches grew their milking herd, they have made other improvements on the dairy that aid in overall herd health and make daily responsibilities less labor intensive.

The cows are bedded with sand in hopes to improve cow comfort.

“When we added the freestall barn, we had to buy many cows,” Loren said.

“Some of the cows struggled to get up, but with the sand bedding we saw an improvement. It works as well as we hoped; it keeps cows going as long as we can.”

The barn also has LED lights and 12 72-inch cyclone fans. The fans were added in 2015 to keep the cows as cool as possible.

“Because of the fans, we saw improvement in reproduction and milk production with no trouble in somatic cell count,” Loren said.

Today, Vetsch Farms maintains a 30 percent pregnancy rate.

“I watch for standing heats and give lutalyse shots every Monday to cows that are eligible,” Loren said. “If there is no heat by the third shot, we put in a CIDR.” The Vetsches check for pregnancies with a blood test.

All youngstock are raised at the

farm site until conrmed pregnant.

Once they are conrmed, they go to the neighbor’s farm until the time of calving.

Both Loren and Elizabeth admit their neighbors are a huge help to the family, especially during eldwork.

“We have 80 acres here and 160

acres of corn,” Loren said. “We buy off elds for hay from the neighbors. They cut it, we chop it. It cuts down on labor and our time.”

The Vetsches do much of the work themselves, but also have one full-time and four part-time employees.

“The full-time employee has been with us for eight years,” Elizabeth said.

“He milks, helps with eldwork and hauls manure. He has been a blessing.

Our part-time help helps with eldwork, and evening and weekend milking. It takes a community.”

The other farm responsibilities are divvied up amongst Loren and Elizabeth and their children.

“Loren is the herdsman on the farm,” Elizabeth said. “He watches the cows and does all breeding and vaccinations on the farm. He does a good job with selecting bulls for breeding. It helps with health and production. He knows the cows very well.”

Elizabeth helps feed calves and milks, and the children feed the calves and, when they can, help with milking.

While the employees help in the parlor, milking cows is a task the family enjoys doing. With the parlor, they have been able to carry out their mostenjoyable farm chore without losing time elsewhere on the dairy.

“I put in a parlor because I like my cows and milking them myself,” Loren said.

Elizabeth agreed.

“We just have to keep doing what we are doing,” she said.

This fall, the Vetsch family plans to continue their on-farm innovations to improve efciencies by adding a manure pit to reduce hauling manure from three times per week.

The increasing cost of production leaves farmers across the nation uncertain of their farm’s future.

“Marginal compression has been happening for a long time,” said Jim Salfer, dairy specialist with University of Minnesota Extension. “Since 2003, the cost of production has been increasing dramatically.”

Salfer, alongside Iowa State University Extension specialist Jennifer Bentley and University of Illinois Extension specialist Phil Cardoso, presented a webinar, “Making Production Decisions During Challenging Times,” July 24. The Four State Extension group, of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, University of Minnesota Extension, University of Wisconsin Extension and University of Illinois Extension hosted the webinar as part of a series to help farmers manage through turbulent times.

This webinar encouraged dairy farmers to develop a strategy that will help their farm remain protable during tough economic times.

Three types of farms are represented across the United States – scale-adapted, niche-adapted and traditional dairies.

Scale-adapted dairies are larger with more hired labor and a focus on efciency. These farms operate on the premise of large volume and low margins. Nicheadapted dairies have found a niche that sets them apart, such as grazing or organic. Their goal is to improve the margin per lb. Traditional dairies represent the majority of the farms in the Midwest and are usually family owned and operated, raising their own forages. For these farms, staying the same is likely not a winning strategy,” Salfer said. “What is your competitive advantage? Every farm has one, even if they don’t know it yet.”

Just focusing on increasing pounds of milk per cow may no longer be as important for protability as it has been in the past, said Salfer.

“You need to get better before you can get bigger,” said Salfer, noting large farms tend to be the most, and also, least protable operations.

High prot farms have a higher gross margin because of milk income and lower net replacement and feed costs. In Salfer’s opinion, protable farms produce milk that is more valuable by having a lower somatic cell count (SCC) and/or higher milk components.

“The rules of prot have changed over the years,” Salfer said. “Today we are focused on efciencies. This includes labor efciency and investing in assets that get a good return on investment.”

With animal care, maximizing production and becoming most efcient can come from ve areas, according to Bentley. These areas include a successful heifer program, quality colostrum, successful transition cow program, good reproduction and quality employee management.

“Is your heifer program an investment or a cost?” Bentley said. “Replacement programs are 20 percent of a farm’s total expenditures. Are we getting the best return on investment?”

Heifers calving in at 24 months old produce 2,000 pounds more milk than those calving at 28 months.

“Quality colostrum is the single most important management factor in calf health and survival,” Bentley said.

“This is an investment in the future of the dairy.”

Colostrum should be high quality, given in the right quantity and as quickly as possible, while maintaining proper sanitation and cleanliness.

In addition to colostrum quality, a transition cow program is an important factor in peak milk.

“An investment in a transition program inuences the health and milk production of all cows at some point,” Bentley said.

One key to a good program is to reduce stocking density in order to increase dry matter intake. Providing optimal cow comfort in a low stress environment can reduce social stress and increase peak milk production.

“Heat stress affects dry cows, too,” Bentley said. “Keep cows cool. Heat stress can compromise transfer of immunity, birth weight and daughter milk production.”

Another important tip Bentley gave was reproduction.

Reproduction goals should be at least a 22 percent pregnancy rate, more than a 65 percent heat detection rate and more than a 35 percent conception rate.

However, the most important factor is knowing when to stop breeding.

“Look at records,” Bentley said. “A cow with a high number of breedings, high SCC or is lame may need to be culled. Culling for reproductive reasons is the No. 1 reason for culling on a dairy farm.”

Older cows in the herd can improve overall milk production, while culling cows with mastitis reduces antibiotic costs and improves overall milk quality for the herd.

Dairy farmers must also evaluate their employees, especially while the cost of labor and turnover rate are high.

“Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to,” Bentley said.

Melissa ORourke, Farm and Agriculture Business Management Specialist, agreed.

“You lose $40,000 a year in turnover rates,” she said.

Holding regular meetings, showing the importance of each step and recruiting quality employees can signicantly impact a dairy’s labor productivity.

With the ve tips from Bentley in mind, Cardoso added the importance of quality nutrition on a farm.

“The ve most important things with nutrition are dry matter intake, body condition score, the right diet, dairy efciency, and minerals and vitamins,” Cardoso said.

Studies have shown that cows that start with a low BCS and gain weight conceive much faster than cows that calve in fat and lose weight.

A general rule of thumb provided by Cardoso is a cow with V-shaped hips and pins has a body condition score of less than 3. A cow with U-shaped hips and pins has a body condition score of more than 3.25.

“Most importantly, make sure to feed what the cow needs, but not more than that,” Cardoso said.

Using a dairy efciency tool provided by the University of Illinois can help you make adjustments, build scenarios and look at income over feed cost.

Every farm’s approach to animal care, nutrition and labor will be different in developing the best strategy for the dairy’s place in the future.

Dairy tour focused on biosecurity, proper animal handling methods

The 2018 Summer I-29 Moo University Dairy Tour was held Aug. 3. The tour, “Treat Me Right,” focused on implementing best management practices on dairy farms.

The I-29 Moo University is a ve-state collaboration of extension professionals from Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska and North Dakota.

The rst stop on the tour was Boadwine Dairy, a 2,200cow operation located at Baltic, S.D. Lynn Boadwine and his family have operated their farm since 1874.

Dr. Dan Smith, of the Montrose Vet Clinic, is a consulting

veterinarian at Boadwine Dairy.

Dr. Smith spoke to the tour group about biosecurity on the modern dairy farm.

“One of the best ways to achieve biosecurity is to limit access to your farm,” Smith said. “That can begin with simply putting up signs. You would be surprised at how well people will obey signs. Restrict vehicles coming onto your farm to your employees and approved visitors. Some farms have designated a particular place for receiving deliveries. This can help reduce delivery vehicle trafc.”

Smith advised operators to keep clean clothing for their employees on the premises so they can change out of their farm clothes when they leave. He also

“Always make sure that you clean before disinfecting,” Smith said. “The disinfectant doesn’t do much good if there’s too much manure.”

Smith addressed the topic of euthanasia.

“It’s important that your farm establish a standard operating procedure for euthanizing animals that have become injured or are too ill to recover,” Smith said. “When done correctly, euthanasia is safe for the operator, and swift and painless for the animal.”

Smith said the most common method for euthanizing animals is a bullet to the brain from a small-caliber rie or pistol.

Their SCC is 75,000, but has been as low as 20,000.

The Temperlis quit using BST in December and hope their herd will soon be back to averaging 70 pounds of milk per head per day.

Stefan spoke to the group about the importance of having an SOP for handling their herd. “We have found that there is a huge beneďƒžt to training our employees on how to handle cows properly,â€?

Stefan said. “Our emphasis is on the care of our employees and the care of our cows. We stress to all of our employees that our cows should always be handled quietly and gently. ‌ The cows should be moved using a conversational tone of voice.â€?

Stefan said gentle handling is especially important with ďƒžrst-calf heifers. “We must be absolutely quiet when we put a new heifer into the milking parlor for the ďƒžrst time,â€? he said. “Our employees are very conscious of this.â€?

Heidi Carroll, South Dakota State University Extension Livestock Stewardship Field Specialist and Beef Quality Assurance Coordinator, spoke to the group about the importance of gentle cow handling. “It’s imperative that you train new animals using the least amount of pressure,� Carroll said. “Your employees must learn to focus on the cow’s body language and try to understand things from her perspective. If you pay attention, the cow will tell you what she’s thinking.�

Carroll encouraged dairy operators to use SOP training for all employees. “You need to tell people how to do things and explain why they are done that way,� she said. “Reinforce this training with visual aids and give your employees refresher courses. Remind them that they need to hold other employees accountable for bad behavior.�

Ernst Temperli gave a talk at the Crosswind Jerseys calf farm. Calves spend the ďƒžrst six months of their lives at the calf raising facility. “We make sure that every calf gets colostrum soon after it is born,â€? Ernst said. “During their ďƒžrst month, we keep our calves in individual pens in one of our climate-controlled nursery buildings. We have found that it’s best if we stock the nursery buildings at 60 percent capacity. This is mostly due to humidity issues.â€?

The calves are fed pasteurized milk that is brought over from dairy barn. “We give our calves two liters of milk twice a day,�

Ernst said. “We test the milk and will add a balancer if needed. At 1 month of age, we move the calves out of the nursery building and into individual outdoor huts. ‌ Our goal is to wean the calves at 8 weeks of age, by which time they weigh about 200 pounds. At weaning, we put them into group pens that hold 10 head apiece.â€?

The Temperlis do everything possible to reduce stress during the dehorning process. “We begin by giving each calf an injection of a general anesthetic,� Ernst said. “After the calves go to sleep, we remove their horn buds with a dehorning iron.�

The central goal at Crosswind Jerseys is similar to that of all dairy farms. “We do everything that we can to keep all of our animals clean, healthy and well nourished,� Ernst said.

In addition to the progression of the polled gene in the breed, Larson said another desirable trait of the breed is that they are a grazing breed.

“They are such a versatile, lowmaintenance kind of cow,” Larson said.

“My uncle rotationally grazes his herd of Milking Shorthorn cows all summer, and they do really well for him.”

The greatest asset of the breed, according to Larson, is the people involved with Milking Shorthorns.

“I love the Milking Shorthorn breeders,” Larson said. “Everyone is so nice, supportive and friendly. My goal for the upcoming year is take advantage of the opportunities I have to meet as many Milking Shorthorn breeders as possible.”

Larson will represent the breed at several national shows throughout the United States, including the Western National Show in Puyallup, Wash.; the All-American Open Show in Harrisburg,

Pa.; the International Show in Madison, Wis.; and the Winter National Show in Louisville, Ky. She will also attend the 2019 National Convention next summer in Indiana to help select the new queen.

Larson is looking forward to her time spent presenting awards on the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo as her aunt, Carla Stetzer, will be serving as the associate judge in the Milking Shorthorn breed.

“It’ll be cool to be able to experience the show together out on the colored shavings,” Larson said.

While they are a passion, Milking Shorthorns are not the only activity that occupies Larson’s time. At school, she is involved in the Falcon Dairy Club and will be serving as a vice president within the organization this year. She is also a member of the block and bridle and ag business clubs. Larson is hoping to participate in the judging team this fall, as well.

This summer, she is doing an internship with NorthStar Cooperative, Inc., servicing west-central Wisconsin.

50 years, 350 shows: Judge ‘enjoys talking cows and teaching kids’ mal.

GARDEN CITY, Minn. — John Schroeder had gentle suggestions for a 7-year-old with tear-stained cheeks who made her rst appearance in the 4-H judging arena.

“When you get big enough, you want to hold her head up nice and high,” Schroeder told Emma Appel as she showed her dairy cow, Jewel, at the Blue Earth County Fair.

Emma was upset that her dad couldn’t make it to watch her Friday morning, but left the ring with a smile as Schroeder congratulated her on a strong rst showing.

Emma was the only entrant in the division for the youngest dairy cow show competitors. Some of the other divisions also only had one entrant.

Julie Tesch, interim Blue Earth County 4-H program coordinator, said she was worried Schroeder wouldn’t agree to judge again this year when he learned there wouldn’t be many participants. But he didn’t hesitate.

“He replied, ‘I don’t care the size of the show. Those youth deserve the same opportunities as large counties and I am happy to help,’” Tesch said. “That right there sums up John Schroeder.”

This summer marks Schroeder’s 50th year judging dairy cattle. It’s more than 50 if you count his years as a student judge.

Schroeder has judged fair shows in two-thirds of Minnesotan’s counties. He also has been to Wisconsin and South Dakota a few times and judged at the Minnesota State Fair several times.

In his prime, Schroeder judged up to 10 shows a year. This year he’s down to two. He’s warned Tesch that this year might be his last.

“My age is catching up with me,” he said.

Tesch said she remembers Schroeder judging her when she was a youth.

“I always remembered his kindness and helping me become a better showperson,” she said.

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 11th-grader Matt Thofson was named this year’s dairy show grand champion. The Vernon Center area teen said Schroeder gave him good advice on how he could improve his showmanship and which member of his herd he should select to take to the State Fair. “(Schroeder) comes from a dairy farm. He’s seen a lot of cattle. He knows what to look for,” Thofson said.

When an aging body forces him to retire from judging, Schroeder said he will be content to come back as a spectator.

“Maybe it’s time for someone younger to step in,” he said. “I have done my share and have had a great time doing it.”

Heifer growth monitoring: At which ages should we measure?

By Matt Akins, Extension Dairy Heifer Specialist, University of Wisconsin Department of Dairy Science

We all have heard that measuring calves and heifers for weight and height to ensure optimal growth is important, but at what times should we be doing this to better manage heifer nutrition and breeding?

The typical recommendation for daily heifer gains are 1.7 – 1.9 lbs./day for large breed and 1.2 -1.4 lbs./day for small breeds but will vary depending on your herd’s mature size. Use of a weight tape is an acceptable simple to use tool if you do not have a weigh scale.

Measurements are used to make management decisions such as pre-weaning nutrition and housing or breeding size and age. Times to take measurements include: birth, weaning, 4-6 months (typically at a vaccination), 11-12 months (pre-breeding measurement), and before or after rst calving.

The birth and weaning measurements will allow calculation of average daily gain and will tell you how your calf program is performing throughout the year. By tracking daily gain you can make decisions on whether your nutrition, housing, and sanitation are optimal and if changes are needed at specic times such as summer or winter.

The 4 to 6 month measure will indicate how well heifers are transitioning to solid feed. If heifers are slumping at this time, then you need to re-evaluate your weaning and transitioning process to see if there are too many stressors (trucking, grouping, vaccination, diet change, etc.) with ideally only two stressors at a time. Also, evaluate the heifer diet for adequate nutrients with a grain/protein mix and high quality forages to encourage forage intake. These measures can also be very useful in making early culling decisions with animals with lower daily gains and lower PTA or genomic values candidates for culling.

A pre-breeding measure at 11 to 12 months of age is very useful to evaluate the pre-bred heifer nutrition program, but also to determine if the heifer is big enough to start breeding at 13 months old. This reduces the chance of breeding heifers at too young or too small of size which should reduce calving issues and get heifers calving in the ideal time between 22-24 months of age. Typically, we are looking for heifers to be between 825-900 lb. by 12 months of age with a range used due to differences in mature size.

On a mature size basis, heifers should be bred at about 55% of mature weight so if you have an average mature weight (3rd lactation and greater cows in midlactation) of 1600 lb., then you would expect heifers to be about 880 lb. by 13 months of age and 825 by 12 months of age considering a daily gain of 1.8 lb./day.

Lastly, a weight before or after calving is helpful to ensure heifers are at the correct size at calving and that heifers did not gain excessive weight during this time. Heifers should be about 92-96 percent of mature weight before calving or 85 percent of mature weight after calving. Heifers can quickly gain condition when fed a diet slightly high in energy due to their higher feed intakes. In addition, body condition scoring also can help quickly identify if heifers are gaining condition with an ideal score of 3.0 at breeding at 3.25 – 3.5 at calving.

By measuring at these ve times (birth, weaning, 4-6 months, 11-12 months, and before or after calving), you will be able to make better management decisions to improve your calf and heifer program.

Guest speaker: David Vetrano, retired DNR trout biologist and grazer on the history and appropriateness of rotational grazing in the Driftless Area. Grant County Cattleman’s Association is donating items for the lunch. Directions: From Boscobel: Take 133 east towards Muscoda about 11 miles to Blue River Rd on right (past the town of Blue River). Turn right onto Blue River Rd. Go approx. 1.1 miles past Forest Rd to farm entrance on right at 1435.

A national workshop that will help America raise its next generation of farmers and ranchers has been scheduled for Aug. 14-15 in Marsheld, Wis. The Child Agricultural Injury Prevention Workshop is all about working together to safeguard youth, said Marsha Salzwedel, M.S., National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety. The workshop is designed for farm organizations, insurance professionals, healthcare providers, Extension, agribusiness, public health ofcials and media. The interactive workshop will enable participants to: Understand the leading causes of injuries to children who are either working or playing on farms; Describe interventions most likely to be effective in preventing childhood farm injuries; and Identify their (and their organization’s) unique role in helping farm children grow up happy and healthy.

Prairie Farms’ Cheese Divisions win ve awards at the prestigious 2018 American Cheese Society Conference and Competition Prairie Farms’ Cheese Divisions Caves of Faribault and Luana Cream Cheese took home ve awards, including best-of-class at the prestigious 35th Annual American Cheese Society’s Conference & Competition in Pittsburgh.

World Dairy Expo to host inaugural showmanship judges clinic World Dairy Expo is pleased to announce the addition of a Showmanship Judges Clinic to its educational programs. Open to showmanship judges of all skill levels and youth dairy project leaders, the clinic will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1 in the Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center.

This international clinic will cover the showmanship guidelines developed by the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association to improve consistency in contests across North America.

Some considerations Possible nitrate issues: Grasses and brassicas are known as efcient nitrogen scavengers and can contain toxic levels of nitrates.

Testing representative cover crop samples from the eld will provide an accurate estimation of nitrate content in the plant tissues.

“Allowing livestock to graze only the top half of the plants can also reduce the risk of toxicity as nitrates tend to accumulate more in the lower half of the plants,” Karki said.

Soil health: In the short term, livestock grazing is the most effective way to receive the best economic return from cover crops.

However, be careful not to overgraze. Residue should be left behind for long term soil health benets.

Residual herbicide: Many pre-emergence herbicides that allow fall planting of a forage cover crop have a four- month restriction interval.

If a cover crop species is not listed under plant back restriction, then it will fall under the “other” category. Harvesting or using cover crops that are not listed on the label for grazing would pose personal risk to the producers.

However, if a producer does not intend to harvest the cover crop, the rotation interval requirement is not a legal requirement.

Cover Crops: Good option for hailed out crop acres One way to make a good use of elds severely damaged by hail and other adverse weather, is to grow cover crops for supplemental forages and soil health, said SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist, David Karki.

“In addition to grazing opportunities, the leftover cover crop residue of diverse plant species (above and below the soil surface) will help enhance overall soil health by adding living tissues in the ground, increasing soil water inltration, sequestering carbon, boost soil biological activity and sometimes adding additional nutrients that can be utilized by subsequent cash crop,” Karki said.

He explained that although growers can plant a single species of cover crop, blends or mixes tend to do better in terms of maintaining quality and the quantity of the forages.

“The timing of forage need can dictate the proportion of cover crops species that can be used in a blend,” he said.

For example, Karki explained that grasses, especially warm-season grasses such as sorghum, sorghum sudangrass and millets, put on rapid growth when planted early in the season.

Other cool-season grasses, such as wheat, oat and barley will also fare better, Karki said, than cool season broadleaves like brassicas and legumes.

“Generally, cover crop blends planted before third week of July should have higher proportion of warm-season species, whereas the ones planted after third week of July or into August should have more cool-season species in the mix,” he said.

For grazing, Karki encouraged growers to plant a mix with at least 60 percent grass species, which will help maintain not only tonnage and forage quality, but also animal health.

Karki does caution that a high proportion of brassica and/or legume species can cause bloat in ruminants.

Wisconsin wins big at annual American Cheese Society Competition For the 14th consecutive year, Wisconsin cheesemakers captured more awards than any other state or country at the American Cheese Society’s (ACS) 2018 Competition. Known as the “Oscars” of the cheese industry, Wisconsin cheese and dairy producers captured a total of 94 awards, more than the next two states combined, at the 35th annual competition and conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this past weekend.

Wisconsin cheesemakers, butter and yogurt makers, claimed 26 percent of all awards, including 27 rst place ribbons, 30 second place and 37 third place. Over 30 Wisconsin companies took home one or more awards.

Wisconsin cheese companies also swept the awards in ve categories: – American Originals, Brick Cheese - made from cow’s milk – American Originals, Brick Muenster - made from cow’s milk – Italian Type Cheeses, Grating types - all milks – Flavored Cheeses, Feta with Flavor Added - all milks – Cheese Spreads, Open Category Cold Pack Style- all milks Several companies from Wisconsin earned multiple awards at this year’s competition.

Klondike Cheese Co. of Monroe took home 12 awards, including seven rst place ribbons.

BelGioioso Cheese of Green Bay earned nine awards, including two rst place ribbons.

Maple Leaf Cheese of Monroe garnered seven awards, with three rst place ribbons, and Emmi Roth, also of Monroe, took home six awards including rst, second and third place wins.

“Wisconsin cheesemakers and dairy producers are incredibly passionate and dedicated to perfecting their craft,” said Suzanne Fanning, Vice President of Marketing Communications at Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. “We could not be more excited that their hard work has once again been recognized by the American Cheese Society. NOTE: This is a very good herd of young, well uddered, high producing Holstein cattle.

According to records of milk sold, the herd average is approximately 25,000 pounds milk, 3.5 to 3.8% butterfat and 3.2% protein. Although the Stanglers are not on official testing, a milk weight along with individual SCC and fat information will be available sale day. This herd is timed perfectly for prospective buyers with over 50% of the herd in their first and second lactation, and with 50% fresh in the past 60 days with many producing over 100 pounds per day. The Stanglers have received quality milk awards for over 10 consecutive years with current SCC averaging under 100,000. Excellent herd health program, all eligible females are Bangs vaccinated. Hooves trimmed regularly. Cows are milked in a tie-stall facility and let out daily winter and summer. The Stanglers have used registered herd sires from the Goebel Brothers Dairy at Albany for many years. All cows are in service to a very good herd sire from the Goebels. The Yoder’s are planning to move to New York, we are pleased they have chosen us to market their fine herd. 36 Holstein cows including 5 Red and Whites, polled Red and White herd sire. Very nice bull! Several cows recently fresh and milking heavy, also many spring calvers that are milking well and bred back. Herd average is 61 lbs with 180 SCC. We will have individual milk weights and cell counts on sale day. A home raised grazing/tiestall herd, certainly not pushed for production. The Yoder’s have been using polled Red and White bulls the last 5 years, a lot of polled and Red factor genetics sell! Also selling 4 heifer calves with these genetics!
