FREEPORT, Minn. – Faith and family are the foundation of many farms, and are often the pieces that help carry a farm into the next generation. The Hartung family exemplies the building blocks of farming and is anxious to share their lifestyle with others. On Sunday, Aug. 18, the Hartungs will welcome people to their Stearns County farm for the annual Rural Life Celebration for the Catholic Diocese of St. Cloud, Minn. “This year’s theme is ‘Care for God’s Creation: A Legacy of Faith,’ and that’s what we’re doing here,” Amanda Hartung said. “We’re keeping the farm going for future generations by taking care of the animals and the land we have here.” Amanda and her husband, Randy, milk 76 cows with their four children – Trevin, 18, Abraham, 15, Ethan, 10, and Marissa, 8 – near Freeport, Minn. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Mass ofciated by Bishop Donald Kettler. During this time, special guest speaker Joe Gill, of KASM radio, will recognize 35 century farm families in a rst-of-

Following Mass will be a picnic luncheon and opportunity for attendees to enjoy music by the Slew Foot Family Band, view farm equipment, take part in a petting zoo, and learn about dairy farming in organized tours. The event is scheduled to end at 3 p.m. “We’re excited and nervous,” Randy said. “Initially, we thought this was going to be no big deal, but as we get
closer, we’re realizing how big of event this will be.” With this year being the rst time century farm families will be honored, the Hartungs and the planning committee are expecting a larger than normal crowd. And, all the more if the weather cooperates. When the committee rst gathered to begin planning, they anticipated about 500 people in attendance. Now, that number has doubled. “Many times we will host 30 people for dinner. That’s right up our alley,” Randy said. “We really like hosting, but

we’ve never done so on this scale.” Amanda agreed. “But, many hands make light work, and we’re having fun,” she said. They rst hosted a larger crowd when the family took part in a First District Association summer picnic. “That was the rst big group we welcomed, and that was very rewarding,” Amanda said. “We worked hard all day to set it up and it went perfectly.” The Hartung family and fellow church members in the

parish cluster – of Seven Dolors, St. Anthony, St. Benedict and St. Martin – have been planning for the community event since early spring. Together, the committee has organized the various activities that will occur throughout the day, the food that will be served, and the parking and transportation of attendees, including those who are handicapped. “All of this has come together because we’re a team,” Amanda said. Randy agreed. “Honestly, we have a hard time saying no when it comes to helping out and going the extra mile for our church,” he said. “But we’re not stressing about the work, because we’re not doing this alone. As soon as we committed to being the host farm, so many people came up to us and offered to help with anything we needed.” The Hartungs already had their property ready for guests with a June graduation party for Trevin. However, the late planting and now later harvest is the greatest challenge in getting ready for the Rural Life Celebration. In the next two weeks, the family will juggle cutting third crop hay, swatting oats and setting up the tent for the celebration. Rather than focusing on the overwhelming list of todos, the Hartungs are focused on the incredible opportunity they have been presented. “To have Bishop Kettler

give Mass on our farm is amazing. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance ‌ an honor,â€? Randy said. “My cousin told me in her mother’s eyes, this is a bigger thing than the state fair.â€? Randy grew up helping his grandfather on the farm. He lived on a hobby farm near Holdingford, Minn. Then, in 1998, he and his father purchased the property and formed a partnership. In 1999, Randy and Amanda wed, and have continued growing the dairy enterprise ever since. Today, the Hartungs all work together to complete daily chores, including feeding, taking care of calves and milking the cows. The family also farms 600 acres and manages a custom bale wrapping business. “Some days can be pretty crazy,â€?

U of M offers nancial counseling to assist farmers As difcult nances become the new normal, the University of Minnesota is offering a suite of assistance programs for farmers in Minnesota and around the country. Extension educators say their training programs, nancial counseling and economic management courses have been popular with agriculture professionals throughout the state. Commodity prices have fallen for producers while operating expenses remain high, an equation that puts strong pressure on farmers’ bottom lines, regardless of the commodity they grow or livestock they raise. Forces outside of the free market — primarily protracted trade conicts with traditional international partners — have only made the situation worse. “Right now, we have a lot of ‘wait and see’ going on in Minnesota agriculture,” said Michael Boland, a professor of applied economics at the University of Minnesota and director of the Food Industry Center. In 2018, the median net income for Minnesota farmers was $26,055, according to data tracked by U of M Extension and agricultural Centers of Excellence within Minnesota State. That is the lowest level in at least 20 years. Nearly every commodity saw a down year: Crop income declined by 29 percent; dairy farms were down 65 percent and pork producers suffered a 77 percent decrease. Facing declining farm incomes, in 2017 Extension launched a free nancial counseling service for farmers dealing with economic distress. Minnesota farmers looking for an in-depth analysis of their economic situation or help dealing with banking and farm business management can call 1-800-232-9077 for a free consultation with University experts. “Agriculture is very cyclical, so throughout time we have high periods and low periods,” said Megan Roberts, a Mankato-based educator on Extension’s Agricultural Business Management team. “What is concerning about this particular time in agriculture is it has been a prolonged period of low commodity prices, and also low commodity prices across crops and livestock. At this point, we have an industry-wide issue, and it has been going on multiple years.” Extension launched the nancial counseling service amid warning signs indicating a prolonged downturn in farmers’ economic fortunes. It is, ironically, a situation that can be traced to the most recent economic upswing for farmers. In the early 2010s, agricultural incomes were soaring. Commodity prices were high and farmers were producing record yields. The costs of production — land prices, rent, labor, etc. — soon increased to follow commodity prices, but farmers were selling enough product to cover those costs. Commodity prices have since dropped: corn is selling for half as much today as it was in 2012, and soybeans are down by one-third. Meanwhile, expenses have not fallen, and farmers’ cash ow has suffered accordingly. Experts predict conditions will deteriorate even further. “Farmers have had a good equity position — they had cash in the bank and were able to use that to cover costs,” said Dave Bau, an Extension educator in Agricultural Business Management based in Worthington. “A wet spring and late planting dates will cause lower yields for those farmers unable to get their crops planted in a timely manner. Even with recent higher corn prices, the lower yields will decrease or eliminate prots. Meanwhile, soybean prices remain low.” Extension’s Ag Business Management team offers a handful of nancial tools for farmers seeking assistance. Mediation staff manage a phone line to help farmers navigate disputes with banks and other lenders. The team conducts in-the-eld training on farm transfers and estate planning, recordkeeping and required management programs for farmers who borrow from the government. Educators conduct dozens of these trainings annually. Farmers are especially interested in estate planning and farm transitions. Bau said he takes around 1,000 calls a year from farmers and landlords who need help managing the land costs of their operations. Some have been forced to sell their land to improve cash ow. In 2018, more than 300 people attended farm transition workshops that Roberts hosted alongside Minnesota State. “The cash ows are the biggest issue,” Bau said. “Farmers, on paper, are still ush — they have assets, mostly land — but there is no cash ow. And that’s the nancial strain that farmers are dealing with.” Boland said ongoing trade wars and tariff disputes with large Minnesota trading partners — China, Mexico, Canada and Europe — have brought added uncertainty to an already-difcult situation. “What is unique of the last 12-15 months is we’re seeing a reexamination of our pro-trade policies and I think it’s kind of confusing for a lot of people,” Boland said. “People are still optimistic about the future, but these are uncertain times.” Learn more about Extension’s farm nancial counseling by calling 1-800-232-9077.

When do you do chores? I do chores every morning and evening in the summer, along with every evening and some mornings during the school year. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? Why? I like feeding calves because it’s nice to watch the calves grow and see them every day. I usually feed the calves with my brothers or my mom. My least favorite chore is cleaning stalls because it takes a lot of time and it’s not fun. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. A Guernsey 4-year-old named Rosie. I’ve shown her twice at the fair. She’s the only Guernsey on our farm. She’s calm, and I can walk right up to her to pet her. What’s your favorite subject in school and why? Agriculture or shop. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a dairy farmer. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would have 100 dairy cows and raise my own youngstock. I would have a parlor like ours – a double-9. I would have a calf barn and a few John Deere tractors. What’s your favorite dairy treat? Chocolate ice cream in a cone. What’s your favorite thing to do during the summer? I like being home and on the farm instead of at school. I like doing hay – baling or cutting. Are you involved in any activities? What’s your favorite? I am in 4-H, FFA and shing club. I like 4-H the best because I get to see a lot of my friends and work with animals. Carter Dicke 10 years old Fifth grade When do you do chores? I do chores every morning and evening in the summer, along with every evening and some mornings during the school year. What’s your favorite chore and least favorite chore? Why? My favorite chore is helping grandpa do random jobs – splitting wood and eldwork like chopping and baling hay. I like equipment and can’t wait to drive it in the future. My least favorite chore is cleaning stalls because it’s boring. What’s your favorite animal on your farm? Tell us about it. My favorite animal is my Milking Shorthorn calf that I will be showing at the county fair this year. She doesn’t have a name yet. She’s really calm, and I like that she’s a different color. What’s your favorite subject in school and why? I like reading because it’s fun to learn about different stuff. I read all the time. I like reading about sports. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to be a professional basketball player. If you had a farm, describe what it would look like. I would use half of my farm for crops and one-fourth would be for pasture for a 50-cow beef herd. I would not have any dairy cows. I would have a couple pigs. There would be a house. I would also have tractors – a couple of each green and red color. I would also have a 24row planter and a 12-row combine along with a pull behind hay cutter, merger and square baler. I would own my own semi so I wouldn’t have to pay for hauling animals to the sale barn. I would have a small, insulated barn with fans and huts for the calves. In another barn, there would be two pens with two different sized beef steers and heifers. What’s your favorite dairy treat? Vanilla yogurt and cookies and cream ice cream. What’s your favorite thing to do during the summer? I like to mow the lawn and have campres. What is your favorite game to play at home/on the farm? I like playing ghost in the graveyard. What do you like to do during recess? I like to play football during the spring, summer and fall. During the winter I like to play basketball. She is our only Brown Swiss calf on milk right now. I get to help feed her. What’s your favorite subject in school and why? I like math because it makes you smart. I would also have four llamas, 50 yaks and several John Deere tractors with a few Case IH. What’s your favorite dairy treat? I like strawberry ice cream in a cup from Roy and Al’s (a local convenience store) and chocolate milk. What’s your favorite thing to do on the farm during the summer? I like to walk the fair pigs. Maintenance Lead troubleshoots repair and maintains plant processing equipment. Addresses errors that occur with machines and makes determination of repairs needed. Controls downtime by informing production workers of routine preventative maintenance techniques; monitoring compliance. Serves as a primary interface with customers in the identification/repair of developing or non-scheduled problems with equipment and process systems. Is proactive in making recommendations to reduce and improve maintenance work. Must be able to follow specific work direction and adjust as necessary to accomplish the job. Must have communication skills to properly explain product quality issues to appropriate production personnel. Must have mechanical aptitude. • Must demonstrate leadership ability. Nice to have PLC knowledge but not necessary; or a willingness to learn. Maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment highly preferred. Three or more years related maintenance experience and/or training, or combination of education and experience. Must be proficient in understanding/maintaining utility systems (refrigeration, steam, electrical, water, air), facility infrastructure and all types of processing equipment. Sign-On Bonus $1000 paid after 90 day probationary period.

Responds to assigned work orders and inputs the work performed into the Maintenance Management System. Responsible for ensuring proper sealing, closing, labeling, handling and storage of all cheese packaged in CM department. Through an assigned rotation, operator will be expected to be proficient and able to perform the duties of the 3 roles identified below (Closing/Sealer, Monorail Room, Cooler).
